I have always fantasised about the idea of having a gibson sg ever since i was little. now having been playing for 5 years im glad to say i own a austin sg with walnut finish. this things SOLID! i have played gibson and i think the prices on them are ridiculous for what an austin presents. i love it!

Sound : 10
This thing can give the soft clean sound you need for a nice clean jam but it can also give you the power to shred on a half stack. This guitar is among the best ive ever had the honor to play.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The action is unbeatable. the neck is alot better then a gibson gives you alot better action. I went with the walnut finish i think the wine red is to over rated. the wood is DEEP finsish and is beautiful. i am lucky to say i got mine for 156 because it had a small finish flaw on the back however the rest is beautiful and for the price of a walmart guitar i almost went nuts!

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
this thing is durable and solid the only thing im worried about is the finish stripping a little in the future but it shouldnt be a problem with good care

AUSTIN AU776WR THUNDER ROCK . An absoulutly typical sg copy in every way. Except they did evertything right! Boring headstock.Made up for by a very cocoa colored rosewood board

Very sweet mahogany body with a transparent burgandy finish and wonderfull grain to the wood.( I think I got a good one one a good day) Mahogany set neck and MOP dot inlays. 2 raunchy as hell humbuckers.Passive electronics in a tidy well done cavity.NO wasted wood at all. 2 volume 2 tome..3 way switch..no frills.

Made in Korea in Im gussing 2004.

Sound : 10
I bought this because of previous reviews and I am NOT disapointed. This thing absolutley screams through a 40 watt practice Peavy amp..and I can not wait to use it live.

I have no idea what the make of PU's is but for stock they are VERY good. Growly and low down n dirty. Perfect for metal and hard alt rock rythms and leads. Back off the distortion and it wil handle anything that does not require a twang. It is not at all nasal.

Unlike a " real" sg. The neck PU is flush up against the well set neck ( Goes well into to body) and the sustain on high end notes is amazing.

It was either this or an epi 62 reissue.. and this won. I made a very good choice.

I had a studio musician friend go over it ( well actually it was his idea and he hogged it all night) He ran it through differnt sound configurations.. Looked at the neck closer. Eyballed the hardware with a cynical eye. Then told me I was insane if I changed anything out ( bridge PU for instance). Sperzel locking tunners would be it.. and only If i decided to make it my main gigging guitar. I find it extremly gutsy sounding. A REAL rock guitar. Some one said glassy played high and clean in another review.I agree. Crystal clear.. no noise. Solid silent swtiches on the fly. The wood RINGS so well

I valued his opinion only because I thought I was hallucinating about the thing. I wasnt. All it needs is a minor set up to taste.

Looks are nice but who plays the looks right? If you are all about sound. This not only enters Gibson country but it walks right up to the door and knocks. Its close.. very close.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I always though sg's were basicly a toliet seat with a neck and not nearly as pretty as LP's or strats. The wine color always nausiated me.Not now!

The finish is not overly thick but very resiliant and there are no flaws at all. No hiding second rate woods here. It shows them off. The only mark on it was a micro ding under the pick gaurd ( which is minimal and thick). That likley happened in transit. Not a finish flaw. The rosewood is muti facet cocoa and a joy to look at in natural light. The dot inlays were a good idea to spare even more sustaining wood power.

The neck is fairly thin compared to a Gibson and FAST. It feels like you are running around in a feild with nothing to trip you up. Feels wide and flat and arrow straight.. with acres to bend . Frets are almost leveled which alows you make the action so low Chording is amlost feather touch. This is a WELL made piece. Value is WAY above price paid.

Reliability/Durability : 8
God can this guitar stand up to live playing! Im tripping over myself in anticipation of it. Naturally it wil get dinged up along the way. I may clear coat a little more at the back to spare the wood. Other wis eits tough ebough if u care at least a little about your guitars.

The hardware is solid and decent quality. Speed knobs are easy to handle and visible ( black with white inlay numbers that catch light)

Strap posts are good sized.. and the neck post is in a better position than on a Gibson. Up closer to the horn and forward a bit. I give it an 8 here because they opted for showing for the wood and not the protection gloss here.

Customer Support : 8
Austin has full contact info on thier site if you ever need it. As well as specs for all thier current models.

Overall Rating : 10
I dont know how they done it.. but I knows hey done it! ( To quote a bugs bunny cartoon) Superior materials and very well crafted. For a retarded lowe price. BETTER than an EPI standard yet.

Others have said it looks much higher end than the price range. I think its a solid over all work horse that looks wonderfull. If you take care of it a bit..it will do what you want. Its a rock machine. You play the sound not the finish.

stickers show Indonesia made, though it's hard to believe; 2004; standard features for an SG (2 humbuckers and 3 way switching). Good positive and quiet switch. Body is several pieces (4) of mahogany, mahogany neck, plastic nut, gloss finish. Set neck is thinner than real SGs but about the same width and feels solid. Color is wine red transparent. All the standard features;, not a 3 pickup style and no coil tap. Fretboard is rosewood and not dark and shiny, but straight grained, colorful, and the frets are finished very well at the ends and polish up very well to a shine.

Sound : 8
Rated an '8' here because it is 80% of the way toward a good sounding SG. The electronics in an Indonesian guitar cannot be top quality, but they are easily replaced. For $100-120, you can get a set of TruetoneTechnology pickups that match Fralins. But stock, this guitar sounds pretty darn good. It's a bit harsh, not sweet, not 'ballsy' and fat, but it's entirely usable and all three positions are good. Through a Princeton Reverb (Eminence Ragin' Cajun speaker) or my Traynor YCV40wr it sounds quite good.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I have to rate a '9' here compared to Gibsons (the '61 reissue) because the tuners are not very high quality, but have adjustable keystone style buttons and are chromed well. Bridge assembly is chromed well and smoothly. Black plastic nut was cut well, no rattles, good action stock but needed a little adjustment. I have it at fret 12: 3/32 bass and 1/16 treble E's and no rattles. Pickguard is strictly average cut precision (b/w/b), but not bad. The finish all over is almost perfect and the control cavity is neat and done right. For a guitar this price new, it is simply unbeatable, unless they had this model built in Korea, which I had hoped it was. My Austin 335 copy in red (Korean) is built like this one and same hardware and is also cosmetically flawless. These are the best built inexpensive guitars I ever saw, including the 'PRS' Santana SE from Korea. I see no quality difference between my 2 Austins in the build. And they better than the Gibson cosmetically (frets, finish color).

Reliability/Durability : 9
This design is proven and its a slab of wood with a set neck. with reasonable care, its should last a long time. Pots and pickups and tuners could be tossed for Grover, CTS, and a good quality pickup (P90 or PAF style). Based on what I see of this guitar and the austin ES335 copy, I'd expect this brand to last about like a Gibson (which is no big compliment).

Overall Rating : 10
Now you know why it rates a 10! A guitar that is well built, good neck, decent pickups, quiet pots, good action, sounds good, nearly flawless cosmetically with a TKL new case and the guitar physically new for $175?? huh?
I know it's insane, but that is why these are such a value. You can throw it in the trash if you get tired of it.
This is the God's truth: I am going to sell my '80s Greco SG in cream white, all original, with fat neck and no fretwear and 95% cosmetically and keep the Austin. Why tie up that money in the Greco when I can play a heavier mahogany guitar with nearly the same sound for practically nothing?
Guys, I am telling you: The 335 copy crushes the Ibanez (not the AMs if you ever find one!) from Korea and I've had the AS120. The Austin is better in every way. You simply cannot go wrong on this guitar for $200-250 used. My luthier spent 5 years at Mars/Sam Ash doing setups and told me this guitar is ready to go as shipped. He was stunned at the quality from Korea (335 copy) and the SG (Indonesia). Me too.

im just an interediate player, but i can tell that this guitar rocks!! ive always liked the look of the origianl SG, but being in high school, i couldn't exactly afford it. the dark cherry red and black pickguard give this guitar an authentic look and the action on this ting is incredible! all the different kinds of tones possible with this guitar, along with dual humbuckers let me rip out some good rhythm or scream on lead

Sound : 10
like i said, the humbuckers give it that extra kick that "strats" dont dish out. the variation in tone on this thing allows me to experiment until i get a sound i like. i normally just use distortion or keep it clean sounding, b/c im still learning

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
everything about this guitar seemed to be in perfect condiion

Reliability/Durability : 10
the finish on this thing is thick so i dont think it will strip anytime soon. the only thing i dont like is the strap button on the back of the neck, but i'll manage

It has a beautiful deep transparent red finish,

Sound : 10
This guitar is like an emotional tool. I play through a Marshall TSL100 and it sounds sick! No noise, the sound can be either bright or dark and mysterious depending the pickup you use, and this guitar can scream and seeth like nobodies business.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The action on this guitar is probably the best ove ever felt. the pickups are well adjusted, and everything on it is superbly built.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Ive had this guitar for 2 years, and jam with my friends everyday, and it always hold up. The finish is very thick, and will be there for a while. I would definately use this as my main guitar with no backup.

Overall Rating : 10
This is the only guitar I own, and i dont need another guitar. My favorite feature is the ability to play punk, funk, blues, and blazing runs with super ease. I compared this to a jackson showmaster, and the Austin was lighter, played better, and sounded better.

this guitar is a black/green flame maple simulation. It has a tunamatic bridge, stoptail dual humbuckers (gold hardware) unlimited tone shaping

Sound : 10
humbucker in the bridge is super hot. Neck position is very glassy and smooth. no hissing or humming (sounds great)

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
plays as good as a gibson with the exception of the fingerboard feeling a little too squeeky clean . A little neck oil turns this into a dream.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've gigged with this guitar and was extremely happy with it. People tell me it looks like it cost a fortune...

never needed

Overall Rating : 10
Ive been playing for 15 years and have owned every style of guitar I can think of . This one is the absolute most comfortable and affordable. Great tone and playability. My les paul has a smoother neck but damn its like 5 times heavier to play during shows, its now retired to my bedroom. Austin isn't a "popular" brand name but it damn well should be...
