Specifically, this is a 000-2 HCE, which means that it's a 12-fret-to-body, slot-head, herringbone (H) cutaway (C) with an Engelman (E) spruce top. As a "2" level instrument, it has rosewood (Indian) back/sides, ebony board and pyramid bridge, etc. As with every Collings ever seen, the quality of materials is top-level -- simply unsurpassed. I don't know where Bill Collings gets his wood, but it is invariably the best and better than seen from any other maker, bar none.

Sound : 10
I have played guitar my whole life, have owned innumerable instruments both new and vintage, and have handled others, sanging from top choice star-player working instruments to boutique guitars and plenty of everyday instruments. I purchased this instrument from the Music Emporium (MA) where great guitars are common; I shopped also at Fretted Instrument Workshop (MA) where the same is true (vintage included). At this point, I was in the unique position of just acquiring the best single player guitar I could find. I did not have this particular maker or model in mind. However, this configuration (combination of materials, workmanship, 12-fret neck/body size/relative positioning of parts) is -- again, surprisingly -- in the case of this instrument, the most sensitive, wide-ranging, expressive, and playable setup I have ever encountered. The guitar has extraordinary headroom. From near-silent fingerpicking to bashed bluegrass, the instrument maintains the musicality of each note. Though many players are surprised to discover it, in truth some of these 12-fret designs, and this one for sure, can produce more volume that a dreadnought. The body length/bridge position configuration has something to do with this, as it is a different story from the conventional 14-fret/join setup. The volume range is unexcelled. The tone, too, is remarkable. Whatever you play, you hear. It is expressive beyond description. This is the most versatile and best-sounding guitar I've every encountered/.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Collings is the best production luthier in the business. This instrument is perfect -- the most detailed joins are demonstrably superior to even the top pieces by top makers. All of em.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Lightly but properly built. Abuse it and it will surely suffer. Treat it right, and it is constructed to perform and last.
