Funky guitar. Silver spakle finish! Masonite top, plywood sides, semi-hollow body construction. Stacked volume and tone knob, 6 way "chicken head" knd pick -up selector, two way throw switch. Three lipstick tube style pickups. The body style is similar to a Les Paul - a single cut design. The bride has individual saddles for all strings, allowing fine tuning for intonation. Gotoh tuners. Maple neck / rosewood fretboard. Medium frets.

Sound : 10
Excellant sounding instrument. I've played and/or owned Les Pauls Srats, G+L ASAT(another outstanding manufacturer), PRS, etc. This guitar has a personality all of its own. It could be desribed as similar to being between a strat and a telly, but with a much warmer tone. The pickups hum just a little, but no where near as bad as many single coils I've played! This guitar can get really bright and thin sounding, as well as very fat and warm. I love the tones this guitar has to offer. It's a bit off the beaten path, yet sounds strangely familiar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This one is set up pretty good straight from the store. Action is nice, but I will adjust to my personal liking later on. Pups are adjusted just fine. Finish looks nice and sparkley. Frets look good, no big burrs or anything. Fretboard is in good shape. Everything looks just fine. All it needs is a little tweek in the action for my personal playing tastes. The glued-on strap buttons a pretty sad, though. I'll fix that later. Over all, though, it is a nice guitar!

I have no idea. I just bought the little guy. Seems durable. I treat my gear with love and respect, so this Dano should be good for a LONG time!

One year warranty (?)

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for over 10 years now. I play through a Mesa Single Rectifier amp, and I also play a Standard Strat. Got a PRS on the way too!! This Dano is a great guitar. I really enjoy playing it, as well as listening to it be played! I'm very satisfied with this instrument. I recomend this guitar to anyone who is looking for something a little differant and/or fun. Great clean sounds, pretty damn fat distorted sounds too!! This guitar can get just about as fat or thin as you want. Sounds wonderful through my Mesa. If it were stolen, I'd want another. I play what might be called "alternative" or something, and this guitar is great for what I do. Lots of fun to play!!!

Not like old lipsticks but different and fun.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Had a U1 that I sold to pay for this since I didnt really want two danos. The U1 had a better fret job but this had a notisably fatter neck that feels nice.Ill do my own dressing and it well be fine.I think the sparkelly paint job was bookmatched front and back ha ha .

Reliability/Durability : 10
My friend has a old dano thats in amazing shape considering its fourty years old. That said it wont stay in tune with out a new bridge and tuners so these new danos are great. I woulnt want it to be my only guitar but it sure turns heads at jam sesions.

There web site is fun.

I walked into my local guitar center cause there allways giving stuff away at the end of the month.Right before those new danos came out with all the built in effects they put all there danos on sale . They had great prices on all the different models but they had 3 U3s for $119 apiece. I paid $114 for my U1 at the same store and thought that was incredible.I used it for a year and sold it for what I paid for it to pay for the U3. The most amazing thing is that the last one sat in the store for months at that price before any body bought it. I would have bought it my self but my wife would have thought I was crazy. Oh yeah It took fifteen mins to buy it because there computer woulnt sell it to me for such a low price.

Silver Sparkle three passive lipstick pickups, semi hollow body masonite top and back with wood framing, maple and rosewood neck, gotoh tuners, adjustable bridge, single cutaway, six pickup configurations with switch and one bypass blow switch, stacked knob. Frets are medium. No whammy bar. Neck is nice after it was lemon oiled on front and back to make it not so sticky as it is new.

Sound : 10
On my amp's clean channel, it sounds very 50's and 60's, but can be rolled off to take out the chimey, trebly ventures tones. On the dirty channel of my amp, it can wail on blues, classic rock. The sound is very rich and the hollow sound fills out the sound more than a strat or tele. There is a lot of variety in this reasonable costing ax. It seems to add more tone than the usual strat or tele tone.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Flawless except for the strap pegs. I was forewarned that they come out and so went and glued them. One came out easily to accept the glue and would have been a disaster later. Guitar is very lightweight, but I owned a Danelectro 56-U2 before and they are tough little bastards. They can get knocked around and take it.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Used to use my 56-U2 for live gigs with no problem. The U3 has more sound options and will also handle live gigging and it is dependable-new guitar technology electronics but old style construction. I never gig without a backup

one year warranty and have not needed customer support.

Been playing off and on since 1964. I have owned my share of winners and losers and this one is a winner. It is a good all around guitar for classic rock, blues, country, folk and vintage sounds. If it were stolen, I would get another. I own other guitars and it is part of my rotating arsenal. My favorite feature is the versatility of different types of sounds. I looked a a Jerry Jones and they are well built, but for the extra hundreds of dollars for one over a Dano, it is not worth it. It is the first U3 guitar I picked up to try and bought it because the music store I go to sets their stuff up right before it hits the display area.

Day 2 following my purchase I took it to the local guitar setup gurus (Billy and Doug at Guitar Factory-Orlando>check out the guitar Jimmy Buffet plays!). They were impressed with the cut of the nut and the general quality of this guitar. The Burgundy Burst just sets this guitar off.

Sound : 10
The versatility is definitely there with the "Select-O-Matic" switch. As others have said the single pickup sound is a little weak relative to the 2 pickup choice.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Excellent quality. The trick with these Danelectros is to try out a number of them before you make a purchase. Thhere's significant variation in the feel of the neck and quality of the fretboard. Even 2 identical guitars will be different.

No verdict on this one yet.

Before I made the purchase I e-mailed Danelectro and got a rapid response.

I was sold on a black DC-3 with the seal pickguard. I found one at the guitar store and the blowswitch was defective so I asked them to order one for me. It came in, I was there when the box was opened and there were several superficial scratches in the finish that bothered me as I'm a bit meticulous about stuff like that. Plugging it in it just didn't grab me. I picked up a U3 and set all switches the same as the DC3-MAJOR DIFFERENCES. The U3 had much more twang and response than the DC3. I have no idea why-maybe the pickup angle, the doublecut vs single, I don't know. Anyway aesthetically I wanted the DC3 that's why I waited on a black one but I couldn't go with it after hearing the U3 difference. My recommendation is to go U3. Maybe Danelectro will make an optional seal pickup for it!
