Its a simple guitar with a nice sound. The frets beyond the 14th are inaccesible because the body gets in the way. The cutaway look is misleading. If you like playing high up on the neck (15 plus), this is not your guitar.
Sound
:7
The pickups do not have the power of tex mex strat pickups, but when it comes to a certain country/surf/blues sound, it does quite well. Also, it sounds very nice clean.

Here is the rub for me; this guitar needs some polish to shine like it can. When I got the guitar it was disappointing -- it did not hold a tune. (I bought it over the internet.) Not to give up, Gotoh tuners were installed (a $60 investment), the nut and frets got worked on (this cost a lot more but I bought it used), and suddenly this suspected clunker turned into a solid tune holding guitar. When the sound and harmonics mesh like an in-tune guitar does, this guitar is like the sun rising -- very nice! Definitely worth paying for the extra-work!

It is a hollowbodied guitar so the sound resonates, the lipstick pickups are sweet sounding, warm and mellow in the neck position and the pickup at the bridge is twangy. great for bluesgrass or clean strumming, distorted can achieve some nice pinch harmonics.

Action was well set up. the neck is smooth and the over all finish is nice and clean. I had the black guitar, as I didn't like the black neck with a different colour body.

A very nice guitar. The only brand new guitar I have ever bought. Considering that I play a very used Les Paul and Firebird. this guitar although cheap in price stacks up quite well. To be honest its an absolute jem for its price tag, and i am amazed by it every I plug it into my amp.

You've read most of this already, but I will point out that the pickups are wired in series,so the output is doubled when you use middle setting. It is a very simple guitar by nature...everything you need, nothing you don't
Sound
:10
I usually play blues and rock, but also get into some country. This guitar can do about anything! I play through a blues jr. with a Fulltone OCD or a Snarling dogs tweedy dog,and a 55watt roland jazz chorus occasionally. It doesn't have alot of sustain, due to the body construction, but that is also where it's wonderful throaty, open tone comes from. The lipstick pickups are relatively low output, and extremely clear, with no noise. I can get a great range of sounds from it,and it sounds wonderful through every amp I've plugged it into.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:No Opinion
Mine came from a local dealer and they set'em up before they put them out,so over the last year,I've tweaked the truss rod just a little, that's it. Has a low action, and a very flat fretboard.medium frets that are very smooth on the ends. The neck is a somewhat large U-shape,but easy to play. There were no visible flaws, tight construction, and I've had no issues with the tuning pegs. Those are usually the first thing to go. My only dislike is how it hangs on a strap. It is neck-heavy....
Reliability/Durability
:8
I don't gig,and I take good care of my gear, but it seems to be very sturdy. It is by far the lightest guitar I've played, but you'd have to be pretty mean to it to break it. The finish is thick and even, the strap buttons have stayed tight;had to tighten the input jack once.

I've been playing some 4years now. I have a washburn idol64,an oscar schmidt (335 style) an Ibanez gax70,epi les paul jr (p-90) the blues jr,jc-55,a g-dec,and a 15w marshall mg amp that sounds really lo-fi cool with the dano. I'd be sick if it were stolen, then I'd go get another!!!I may get another to use for slide. I love the voice!!!!It's easy and fun to play, and looks cool, but that sound is why I love it! I was looking at the washburn at the same time and got it because it fits like a glove, but couldn't get that dano sound out of my head and went back for it about 6 mos later.

Pale blueish colour, single cutaway, sort of Les Paul shape, but nicer, I think, in a way. Two silver 'lipstick' pickups, alnico I think, and 2 knobs, 1 volume and 1 tone, 3way switch. The bridge is all 1 piece, and a complete bastard as you can't change the intonation without removing the strings. Foolish design! Another stupid thing is the lack of access to the truss rod without taking the neck off. Everyone complains about the strap buttons, but not being an expert, I really can't see the problem. They haven't fallen off yet, so I don't mind. O yeah, the guitar's so light it's top heavy, like a bass, but i'm used to that now.
Sound
:9
I really love the sound of this guitar, really crisp and jangly. I play through a 70's WEM dominator, and it sounds amazing. The pickups are really low output, but it sounds beautiful. The tone sounds best turned down about half-way, as it's a bit too bright above there. i don't believe in 'guitar versability', it's all down to the player really, but i find this guitar really suits my style; sort of 60's stuff like pink floyd, syd barrett, the beatles. Works well with the grunge stuff i play as well and my own songs. o yeah, forgot to mention, the tuners are SHIT!!! the guitar remains in tune when playing rhythm, but begin bending strings and you hear a sort of ominous 'click' and the string goes slightly out of tune.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:6
the action was far too high when i got this guitar, as were the pickups, but i've sorted that out now. I've since adjusted the truss rod, but i think i overdid and i just can't be arsed now taking the strings off to adjust it again. i'll wait till i need to re-string it, which wont be for a while as i play my epiphone a lot more.
Reliability/Durability
:7
Everything on this guitar seems pretty flimsy, but it's a Danelectro, so i'll give it a 7. i wouldn't expect anything to break on stage, although i haven't gigged with it yet, and i'd probably use it without a backup, cos i'm silly that way. if it did break down, i'd just switch on the echo and hit it with a stick, sonic youth style.

i've been playing for 4 yearsish, and have a 70's epiphone SG310 and some crappy Encore strat that i purchased for 15pounds. the WEM can honestly make any guitar sound excellent, but i like this guitar a lot, mainly for its jingly, cheery sound. i love the quiet pickups, and especially when both pickups are engaged. it's not a patch on my epiphone though, and is just an easy going guitar with its own peculiar sound.

This is where this guitar comes into its own. I was on the look for a Tele and bumped into this in Denmark St in London, In fact about 20 of them and they were all different.
The Neck P/Up is pretty quiet but is very good for backing up a lead player in country and folk.
Neck P/Up is fuller and louder, and both P/Ups together is like you have opened the gates of hell, loud, brash and great.

the p.u. are really vintage, low output and full clear sound both pickups are the powerfull position, good for solos.
bridge p.u. has too low output but the sound is good and you need just a little preamp.

2005, made in Korea, bought it about six month's ago
masonite semi-hollow I believe, solidbody look though
1 volume and 1 tone knob and a 3-way tumble switch
chrome lipstick pickups
colour: cream white with transparant pick guard
single cutaway
neck has gloss finish,black
typical Danelectro headstock
came with a set of 2 tools
aluminium nut
Only thing I don't really like are the screws on the back. It's a total of ten screws. But they're there for a purpose, and they are not visible when you hold the guitar.
Sound

Describing my sound, I would include the words: jangly, fuzzy, garage, sixties, British, vintage,... The looks would say it can live up to this description, and it actually does it very convincing. I play it with a modest Marshall Valvestate 40W with the gain up and the volume on the guitar down. It's only noisy in neck and bridge position, and only slightly for a single coil I think. In bridge setup it sounds twangy, 'both pickups' sounds pretty meaty, and neck position is kind of similar to 'both pickups', only different. You shouldn't play shredmetal with it.
When I just had it, the low E had a very boomy sound, but it seems gone now.

I don't think I'll use it live because I kinda like it too much to risk damaging or losing it. It isn't available anymore through shops I believe.
There is a very small scuffmark on the finish, right where it touches the guitarstand, so that 'll be the culprit. I'd say the strap buttons are actually very solid. I guess I can depend on it, but I only use it to record with at home.

Been playing for twelve years, with a long pause in between, actually restarted about 2 years ago.
Bought it online without hearing or seeing it in real life and don't regret it at all.
I would like to have the same guitar if it got stolen or lost. I wanted to buy a second one, but they were no longer available.
I just like the whole vibe of the guitar, from the looks to the sound. It just feels right.
Other guitars I wanted to buy:Fender lite ash tele, Epiphone G400, Ibanez artcore hollowbody, but I picked this one because it cost pocketmoney at the time. It was a downright steal.
I hope the recent Danelectro's are similar to this one, I'd certainly consider buying one.

As a follow-up to my earlier (mostly negative) review about this guitar's tone: The 'upgrade' adjustable bridge is what is killing that classic Danelectro sound on the 56' Pro.
I swapped a spare vintage-reissue style bridge (an easy change, same mounting holes) onto my Pro, and it made a HUGE improvement in the guitar's tone and response. You will lose some sustain with the vintage style bridge, but it's worth it. I will actually keep my 56' Pro now.
I have recently started making Dano bridges (strictly for my own use) out of 3/16" aluminum plate, with either a single compensated rosewood saddle or six individually adjustable rosewood or delrin saddles; less than half the weight of the stock bridge. These bridges sound even better than the stock vintage-reissue style bridge IMHO, and they don't sag in the center.

Made in 2005 in korea (I think they all were). Very simple in look and features, 2 "lipstick" single coil pick-ups, 1 Volume & 1 Tone control. The tone control gisves you Lo or Hi but not much i between Tuners are un-branded as far as I can tell but seem solid. Famously made from Plywood but the fretboard is Rosewood. Body looks like a Les Paul Jnr (if they made very pretty Les Paul Jnr's). The neck is quite wide across the fretboard (similar to an SG) but not too chunky so ok for smaller handed players(girls).
Beautifully simple, don't buy if you like superflous toys to play with.
Sound

Played through both my ancient AC30 and a little 5w Epiphone A Class valve jobby, this guitar sounds fabulous & unique. Using the bridge pick-up you get that super-surf-Dick-Dale sound that made Danelectro famous. Using the Bridge pick-ip is slightly disapointing, you don't get any extra warmth. This guitar has a special trick though; in the middle position the pick-ups work in series and you things really come alive. Great tone & punch. All in all, lot's of variety from this guitar and no noticable hum or un-neccesary noises.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:8
Straight out of the box this was playable and needed just 15 minutes playing with the bridge to get it how I like it. The bridge itself is simple to understand and seems solid ( you might struggle to get ultra-low action though). No issues with the neck or tuners. The tone controls are Soooooooo cheap though, will have to change them. Factory fitted strings weren't nice but when are they?
Don't let the cute looks and plywood fool you, this seems pretty solid.
Reliability/Durability
:7
Despite being considered a novelty this sounds and looks great and should be played live. Apart from the tone controllers everyhing seems to be well built. I suspect the finish won't be as fresh in a few years time, but then neither will mine. Never gig with-out a back up.

This fits nicely in the intermediate players collection. I've been playing for 10 years now and the pro 56 nestles between a '73 Epiphone Crestwood and an Ovation Electro Acoustic. Looks great, sounds great (I love the way the pick-ups work together). It provides welcome relief from the blizzard of ever-popular Casino's etc and adds much needed fun to the po-faced world of guitar snobbery. You can pick these up for #100 of the original RRP. I suggest you do.

I bought this guitar used, less than a year old. It's got the standard masonite top and plywood body of most of the new Danos.
It is noticeably heavier than my my other U2 and U1 reissues; I believe they must have used a denser grade of plywood for the body, in addition to making the neck thicker (and heavier).
It has one volume and one tone control; it could have used separate volume controls at the very least.
I like the placement of the neck pickup; the bridge pickup is too close to the bridge to be of much use for for me, too thin and not nearly enough output to match the volume of the neck pickup, even when raised as high as possible.
The pickups are somewhat higher output than the stock Dano pickups; they must have put more turns of thinner wire on them, because a lot of the high frequency response is gone.
I'll get to the heart of my problem with this guitar; I don't like the acoustic tone or the dynamics of this instrument.
If I don't like the way a guitar sounds unplugged, it doesn't matter what kind of pickups it has or what amp you plug it into; just can't do a damn thing with it, unless you play with so much distortion that it doesn't matter. Part of the problem is the body; which isn't light or resonant enough; the other problem is the bridge. Sure, the bridge is nice and adjustable, and it gives somewhat better sustain, but it does a poor job of transferring the string vibrations to the body, not that it would do much good since the body is so much denser than the bodies on my other Danos.
Basically this is a thin, bright sounding guitar, closer to a solid body than a hollow body. The attack is simply not there when you hit a string, and the dynamics aren't very even; it doesn't transtion from soft to loud in a smooth manner, and the dynamic range is reduced. The acoustic output is also reduced, so some of the benefit of the hotter pickups is lost.
I collect Dano reissues because I love the way they sound (I have 8 of them) ; they have a touch of that nice hollow body electric sound, without being too boomy or mushy, and they give a really well detailed clean sound with good tonal balance.
I play fingerstyle, mostly clean, although my amp breaks up a little when I really lay into it. I build my own amps; my main amp is a cross between a tweed Deluxe (preamp and tone) and a Supro Thunderbolt (phase splitter and 6L6GC's) with a pair of Weber P10Q clones.
My playing ventures into somewhat jazzy areas and ethnic areas, although more of a Les Paul or Django Reinhardt kind of a thing than the more modern stuff that I can't stand. There's probably a bit of Richard Thompson and Steve Howe in my playing style too. I've been playing for 27 years, in bands for most of that time.
My main guitars are a customized U56 reissue and a U1 reissue(which actually has a core made out of solid wood instead of plywood, from the factory!). These two are the most enjoyable guitars I have ever played; I can't keep my hands off them!
The bottom line is that the 56 Pro didn't live up to my expectations; it is lacking most of the character that sets the U2 and U1's apart.
I can't complain about the fit and finish; they are very good, as is the fretwork. The quality is better than some new Fenders I've seen that cost twice as much.
I can't really say how the pickups compare to the stock lipstick tubes without doing a pickup swap, since the unplugged tone is so different from the earlier U2's.
If your not in love with Danelectros, you might like this guitar. It has kind of a glassy sound to it; not very punchy. It definitely has a unique sound
If you love Danos, don't buy this guitar; If you just have to have an adjustable bridge, get one from Allparts, or have a repairman make a compensated saddle for your stock bridge (I make my own compensated saddles, and they work great)
I think Danelectro should have used a poplar core for this guitar, like the originals had, it would have cured some of the tone problems.
I suspect my 56 Pro is going to get busted for parts; I'll keep the neck and maybe the pickups (if they sound good on one of my other guitars), and stick the rest on ebay
I gave this guitar a 3 for the sound rating; because it tries to pass itself off as an upgrade over the stock U56; sonically it completely misses the mark.

I play many styles, from alt-country to funk, to indi rock. I use it as a back up to my Rickenbacker 330 and as an open-tuned slide guitar. That is where the guitar really shines. Put a little delay on it, and you can create some amazing soundscapes. Tuned straight up I go through various analog pedals and then into a fender blues jr, which i mic. Sounds pretty good, although I do have to take the highs down a bit, when switching from my Ricky. Overall, though, you can't find so much personality in any other guitar for this price.

The Danelectro 56' pro, made in korea. It has 21 frets a very well laminated top, although i was sketchy with the whole pliwood body but i just could'nt resist. It has a 3 way pickup selector, one volume knob and one tone knob, which i may add are well away from where you strum so you won't have to worry much about hitting your volume knob while your playing. It has lipstick pickups, which have a nice crunchy sound and a beutiful clean sound, passive electronics. It has a bolt on neck(rosewood fretboard),a single cutaway with a Dano twist you could say.And it holds in tune great. The only thing i'm not quite sure on is the body(the plywood),it just does'nt seem like a wood you would build a guitar out of,only time can tell on that part.

Well i wanted to be different.I play in a punk rock band and i wanted to have something totally unlike the style.I use a Digitech Gnx1 guitar proccecor run through a peavey kb100,an odd combo but works well.My custon effect should have enough distortion to make up for the guitars single coil, surf style sound. It gets a bit noisy, but what do u expect with the sound i'm goin for,but again,i have a noise gate on my pedal that cuts the feedback off before it has a chance to ruin things ahaha.I really like it alot, people are like wha? thats what i wanted.

The one very positive feature that is that the guitar is light weight yet feels solid. There is no whammy bar. The other features are well explained in the other reviews.
Generally, everying about this guitar is improved from earlier danaelectro guitars. Back in the old days, I had a sears silvertone amp in the case danelectro. That guitar had the great pick-ups, but it could not hold a tune b/c of the low quality hardware. The 56 pro sounds as good if not better, holds a tune and overall appears to be made much better.

I play rockabilly and bluesy white trash music. The guitar sounds great clean. It has that shimmering danelectro sound on the high end, and the notes boom out of the low e-string if you play a folsom prison blues style. It can play many styles.
The only negative on the sound is that it is mushy when the pickup control is set to the lowest position.

I bought the guitar used, but it was in good condition . The only flaw I have detected is a buzzing sound when it is played through 1 pickup only.

Seems durable to me and I would depend on it. The other reviews pretty much spell it out.

This is a great intermediate guitar. For the money I paid, it is a great value and if i could rank it an 12 or 13, I would. I have been playing a beginner Ibanez for a while and I wanted to move up to a better sound. This guitar delivered big time. The sound is great, the action good, the neck right for my hand, and the cost was very low compared to similar guitars.

Same features as below. I have owned a few Danos over the years and this is basically a 56-U2 reissue with a clever redesign and some serious upgrades. Mine is 'gold' but it looks more like a tanned cowhide: beautifully mottled, very attractive. Even my wife loves it.
Upgraded bridge, pickups and tuners make this a MUCH more substantial and gigworthy guitar than it's predecessor(s). I'd love a Bigsby version.

Excellent, typical Dano single coil lipstick tone, perfect for surf, etc. but the pickups are beefed up, higher output. Middle position (pups in series) is like a creamy humbucker, lovely for strumming.

Here's where the real meat is. If you are familiar with the 59-dc or 56-U2 reissue you know the neck profile. This one is quite a bit chunkier with lots of solid heft. Probably not ideal for players with smaller hands but 75% of the players I know prefer a beefier neck profile and this one has it. Excellent choice Dano!
I was attracted by the design and color, I knew I had to have it when I picked it up and felt the neck, and when I heard it the money pretty much flew out of my wallet. I have not felt the need to make even one adjustment yet, although I may tinker with the nut just a little.

If you already like Danos and have considered the 56 Pro to add to your arsenal but were unsure, don't even think about it and get one before they are gone. I have heard production on this limited edition model has already stopped (as of Aug '05.)
I'll bet there retain value and likely appreciate over time -- depending on what Dano has in store for us in the future.

Made in 2005. Korea, mine is under the first 500 as it has a Serial number. It has 22 frets. There is a 3 way selector for the 2 lipstick pickups. Also a volume and tone control (a control for each pickup would be nice) It is made of Plywood and Masonite (basicly chipboard). The finish is metallic blue, which looks very nice and is quite hard to chip ( little sister accident). The body is kinda like a unusual Les Paul model. It has a nice bridge and tailpiece. The tuners are very nice, small, keep tuning well even in alternate tunings. The neck is slightly chunkier than some, but it feels nice after playing acoustic. There were no accessories with it.

This will suit all sounds except Extreme metal players. I play mostly metal and rock, some jazz. It suits anything I do really. I am using a small 10 Watt amp, but tried it though a freinds Marshall 50w amp, which sounded nice. The same friend used his Gibson Les Paul and it sounded almost the same. All it is lacking is a nice low beef when downtuned. The sound on clean is a nice jangly post-punk sound.

The guitar was very well set up when it arrived. It had nice light strings, the only problem was a considerable amount of grime around the frets. The only other flaw was a slight amount of spare string left, which I cut my hand on. The action is low, which is good for metal and slide guitar.

This guitar could withstand lots of live playing, although I wouldn't use it without a backup. The hardware will last a long time, which is good to people who have to save like me. The finish will not wear at all, which is nice. The strap buttons are nice, they are a unusual shape, which holds more than conventional buttons. I could easily depend on this guitar.

I have been playing about 2yrs. I own a Stagg bass and Unnamed acoustic. I wish I could have seen this or tested it before buying, but Im happy so, thats ok. I love the nice low action and wider neck. It stand up just aswell as a Les Paul. I wish there was less grime in the frets.

Not a lot, but all that is needed.
Pickup selector for the two lipsticks. Volume and tone (the tone control covers a lot of ground). A volume control for each pickup would be nice, but it's fine like it is.
Great neck.

This is the hard one. I've had a few really nice electrics (I play mostly acoustic guitar and mandolins/mandolas).
I went looking for something different from my 52 RI Telecaster, which is a great guitar. I had pretty much settled on a used Custom Shop Jaguar, but had to think a bit about spending the $1650 (it was a really nice guitar). I also had my eye on a beautiful PRS CE22 (used at about $1150), A Tele Relic and an Earnie Ball Axis and/or Albert Lee.
I saw this new Danelectro and played it. Man, it is just a great sounding guitar. I doubt that any pro would buy one as their only guitar, but for me -- it is just great. It's got a lot of new sounds in there. I've been playing the heck out of it.
It can be really bright or very dark. It can sound low-fi, or very refined (you'll like it if you dig the low-fi/different stuff).
For new ($395), it's one of the best music purchases I have made. I'm not ready to sell my Telecaster . . . . . . but I might. Again, I use electric guitar only about 20% of the time, but this one sounds good enough to fullfill that need.
It sounds great -- and plays great -- it's for someone who can't afford an expensive guitar, but doesn't want a piece of garbage.
I do have a pretty good tube amp, and I suspect that helps -- but I bet the Dano will sound good through an less expensive amp.
Point is, this is not a toy guitar -- it's a very good one from a sound and playability perspective (no maple flames, but the paint ain't bad, either).
Whoever the hot guitarists are nowdays probably aren't going to play one as their main guitar. But it's plenty good enough to keep someone new on track to becomming great. I'll bet you that if Eric Clapton or your favorite got their gear stolen right before a show, they'd sound good with one of these(and only a few snobs would know the difference).
With the tone dimed -- it's got some sitar, banjo, and what not twang. With the tone down, it can be dark. It probably wouldn't do metal, but I don't do that (although it might give a Metal player something new to show and help em right some new songs).
Can't give it a 10, but I should.

Really nice neck. Feels very good to someone who plays a lot of acoustic. Might not be quite as slim as the fast, slinky necks that some folks might like. I did get the action pretty low without buzzing.
It's got a plain paint job. But, there aren't imperfections. I also like that Dano isn't using the vinyl tape around the edges. These new ones are painted smooth. It's not a bad looking guitar if you are into things that are cool, if not expensive.
My first guitar as a kid was a nice Gibson Melody Maker (about 1966). This Dano is as nice to me, but obviously it's body is plywood. However, I like the Dano neck much better than the MM or Les Pauls, etc. Again, I play more acoustic and like that acoustic guitar feel.
Can't give it a 10 because the PRS I was thinking about was certainly nicer in terms of finish, etc.

I think it will be fine. It's not built quite as sturdy as a Tele, Gibson, etc. But I bet it would survive a fall better because it's not as heavey.

It's just a cool guitar and I'm happy I found it. It is more versatile than what I originally planned on buying (the Custom Shop Jaguar or PRS). It's changed my mind about "cheaper" guitars.
It's more than worth what I paid. After a year or so, you'll probably be able to buy a used one for $250 -- that's great for something this cool.
You'd have to be a cocky son-of-a-gun to show up at an audition for a major act with one of these, but if they didn't die laughing they might like the sound. Slap a sticker on it if you need to feel good about its looks (which I kind of like as is).
It's a good deal, sounds nice and has a bit of cool factor. There are some new, usable sounds in it -- and that's what I find most attractive about any instrument nowdays (I'm over 50). And, I've got an extra thousand or so to buy some mics or something for my wife. I'm happy with it, nice job Danelectro.
