Made in Korea in 2000. 2 Dean humbuckers which are about to be replaced with DiMarzio. 22 frets. AAA flame maple top with mahogany body. Quilt Amberburst finish. Master volume knob, master tone knob, 3-way selector. Mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard. Grover tuners. String through body. Guitar is shaped like a Les Paul, but a bit wider at the bottom. I love the wood and finish. The maple is gorgeous, the fretboard is really good looking compared to most other rosewood fretboards out there, and the mahogany is quality wood. Pickups don't have enough crunch. Didn't like the shape of the neck at first, but after awhile I got used to it.

I am in a band that plays a lot of rock, with influences from Green Day, Nirvana, Weezer, etc. I use a 50-watt Marshall, and a Peavey rage. I use ehx big muff, boss delay, and sometimes a wah-wah. It doesn't have any noticeable feedback unless you hold it right next to the amp. Not enough crunch on neck pick-up. Too much twang from bridge pick-up. However, it sounds good with the right amp settings.

Well set up from the factory. Bridge had to be adjusted slightly. Binding is starting to wear after 4 years of heavy use.

I gig with it all the time. Hardware and finish will last a long time. Good strap buttons, it's only fallen off twice. I definitely would depend on this guitar. I always have a back-up for gigs.

I've been playing for 6 years, this was my second guitar. I also have a 1979 25th anniversary Fender Stratocaster, and many other guitars. If it was stolen I would hunt that guy down and beat his @$$ for takin my stuff. WIth a few small adjustments it's a great guitar. I compared to a lot of Ibanez 7-strings, I don't like the finish on Ibanez guitars. I wish it had DiMarzio Blaze 7 or Seymour Duncan pick-ups.

I purchased the Dean 7 string 2 years ago; beautiful quilted maple arch top, mahogany body and neck. 2 hbs, unusually beautiful fingerboard, Paul like body style, jumbo frets, passive pus, 3 way switch didn't work properly. It was the most visually attractive guitar that I have ownED.

The sound was a little bright until I came to appreciate the bridge pu honk needed for certain styles. It did have rich full sound. I never could feel at home with the neck however. Something very foreign about it. It didn't seem friendly to a wide variety of uses and styles.

I felt like I had something that was trying to be a guitar, it seemed so alien and foreign to me. The bridge pick up quit on me a few times. I played out with it only once. It was durable I suppose.

I traded this guitar after much effort to utilize it. I didn't like the plastic nut, the 7 string thing just wasn't for me. 3 way selector didn't work properly. It was gorgeous however but not playable in my opinion.

Made in Korea, 2000. The guitar is made in Les Paul style, except that strings through a body. Mahogany body and set mahogany neck with a thick quilted maple top. H/H pickups made by dean (I have replaced them on Seymour Duncan), Grover tuners, tune-o-matic bridge.

I've playing for a 12 years now, and I really like this guitar. The Dean EVO Special 7 is a very good guitar. It is vastly superior to Ibanez RG, Epiphone, Squier, LTD ESP 7 strings series .
All I can say is if you want a really fine 7 string guiar at a great price you have to look into the Dean EVO Special 7.

2000 eVo Special 7, Korea, 22, mahogany body with a soild maple top and a quilt veneer on it.. Quilt Amberburst.. V-T, 3 way.. H/H.. Dean "designed" Korean OEM pickups, passive.. a quasi-LP shape.. tune-o-matic, string-thru.. grover mini, chrome.. thin LP shape neck, but W-I-D-E.. an amazing set neck-joint, very comfortable.. fully bound, headstock, neck, body..
an allen key was included..
Sound

very much like a 7 string LP.. it's dark, but not overly dark.. it's a good 7 string, if your not into the Ibanez, etc type 7 strings.. it's very dynamic for the type of woods and construction..
i dig it.
i don't prefer the stock pickups, but they are useful, and have a decent tone and very high output..
but, i plan to replace them with Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates.. as soon as SD makes ZEBRA 7 string pickups..

it wasn't set up when i got it.. the trussrod was so loose that it wedged the end of the trussrod into the cover and bent it.. i set it up, and it's been great ever since..
the fretwork is very good, no sharp ends.. the frets were even, and polished.. the nut is a black nylon, i plan to replace it with a bone nut, it's cut well.. the bridge is decent quality, the saddles are cut well and there are no burrs.. the binding is well done..
the top is amazing, it's very, very hard to believe that it's a veneer.. don't think it could possibly be true?? look here..

d*mn it's nice.. i'm glad that i own it...
there were not any finish flaws on this guitar when i got it.. everything was great, except the trussrod which i think is a fluke in the QC at the factory..
even though i had to do a full setup on it, and the trussrod issue, i'm still very, very pleased with it's overall quality.. i would have taken this guitar over another one, properly setup..

Guitar: 2001 Dean EVO Special 7 (Korea). 22 Medium Frets, Les Paul Body Style with set mahogany neck, mohagany body and quilted maple top. I bought the guitar with the stock setup, but changed out the tuners to Schaller and had some EMG 707's installed. (Well worth the almost $500 it took to do it.)
Sound
:

I was immediatley impressed with the playability of this guitar. I play in a hard rock band using a Mesa Boogie Stack, and even before I added the EMG's the guitar sounded worthy of showing off. After changing the tuners and adding the pickups, this guitar will rip your head off and not break a sweat. I am able to turn the volume back a bit and get some nice, warm clean tones when I want to mellow things out.

When I bought the guitar, the action was pretty good. The music store did a good job of setting it up beforehand. However, the strings were a little too thin for me, so I bought a pack of Dean Markley DT (.58-.14) and a Dean Markley .62 for the B String. After setting up the guitar again, I was amazed at how much of a difference I heard in the sound. Suddenly all of my riffs were twice as tight and you could hear the articulation of every note at high gain and speed.

Dean EVO Special 7. It was made in Korea (I think) in 2000? Construction is reminiscent of a Les Pau (mahogany body and set mahogany neck with a thick quilted maple top. Electronics are 2 humbucking pickups on bezels (not direct mounted), master volume, master tone & 3-way switch. The pickups are apparently no-name ones. This guitar does not have a lot of features; it is simple but that is not a bad thing. In a perfect world it would have 2 volumes & 2 tone controls but it works fine as it is. I would have liked a coil tap standard like the higher-end EVO's do. It is not THE most versatile guitar in the world but is straightforward.
Sound
:

I play rock/hard rock/metal and it is great for my style. The sound is fat and rich and thick. I play through a Boogie Studio .22 and a Line 6 POD. The Dean kills through both of those with the stock pickups. I had anticipated replacing the pickups with Duncans or DiMarzios but I haven't found the need to do so yet. The EVO is not noisy at all. The pots work well - you can clean up the sound by turning down the volume. Played through a high gain amp this guitar really sings!

:

The set up when I got the guitar was o.k. It was at the music store for some time. I had to spend a bit of time adjusting it, changing strings, etc. Once I invested a little time in the setup it went from a good playing guitar to a great playing guitar. Now the action is very low. The pickups were fine and I haven't adjusted them.
The flaws on this guitar are minimal. The quilted maple top is fantastic. It is probably 3/4" thick and is nicely bookmatched. It is probably AAA grade quilted maple. The amberburst finish is very nice and gives the EVO a classic look. The nut came off when I changed the strings but some glue took care of that in a hurry. The output jack was loose but only needed to be tightened.
Frankly, the action, fit and finish on the Dean is superior to most Les Pauls I've played.

I don't play live, but I'm sure this guitar could handle it. The hardware seems good and will last a long time with standard care all guitars need. The finish seems to be substantial and should hold up for a long time. I did replace the strap buttons with Schaller strap locks. I wouldn't ever go to a gig with just one guitar.

I have been playing for 18 years. I have many other guitars including handmade B.C. Riches, Peavey, Schecter. The Dean EVO Special 7 is a very good guitar. It is vastly superior to Ibanez RG series & S series 7 strings. My Schecter is also a 7 string and the Dean is better. The Dean's wood is of higher quality. It is not quite as aggressive sounding as the Schecter but is more balanced. It does not play quite as well as a handmade B.C. Rich, but the difference is slight.
The appearance of the guitar still stops me in my tracks. I can't believe Dean can offer this quality of wood for such a low price! I think this guitar could cover almost any style of music as it is. You could mod it by changing pickups and adding coil taps if even more versatility is needed.
If the guitar were stolen I would definitely search for another one.
All I can say is if you want a really fine 7 string guiar at a great price you have to look into the Dean EVO Special 7

A 2001 AS7 7-string guitar. The body shape is very similar to that of a Les Paul, with a mahogany body and maple top. I got it in a very nice classic black finish. Two passive Dean humbucking pickups. 22 frets.

The sound of this guitar suits my style of hard rock pretty well. My only complaint is that the sound isn't bright enough. I run it through a Line 6 Spider Series amplifier, and it sounds great. The low B ended up sounding a lot better then I had expected it to. When I get some more money, I'll probably replace the pickups with some Seymour Duncans or DiMarzios.

The guitar was set-up fairly well. The action and intonation needed to be adjusted. Other then those two things, there was nothing wrong with this guitar. The solid black finish that I got with this guitar is excellent.

I've playing (both live and recording) for a few years now, and I really like this guitar. I'm primarily a bass player, and this is my first guitar other then my 6-string Squier. I kind of wish this guitar had brighter sounding pickups and seperate volume and tone controls for the seperate pickups, but for $250, one can't be too picky. If this guitar were stolen or lost, I would definatley replace it. I was very surprised by this guitar. Since I was got it for such a low price, I wasn't expecting it to be as great sounding (and great looking, for that matter.) as it is. I would definatley recommend this guitar to anyone looking for an inexpensive, good sounding 7-string.

2001 EVO AS7 7-String Dean Electric guitar made in Korea, at least that's what the sticker on neck says. Comes with 2 finishes, sunburst maple tops or solid black. Tone and Volume with 3 way switch using 2 passive Dean stock humbuckers. Solid mohagany body and neck with rosewood fingerboard. Les Paul shaped body, solid black finish. Tunomatic bridge with string through. 22 fret wide neck medium frets (i think, wheres my calipers??).

Never played a Les Paul shape before, however this guitar is not heavy to carry and has well placed strap buttons for good balance. Fits my heavy rock music style well. Using ADA MP1 through Carver 120 power amp and marshall half stack. Guitar is quiet at high volumes, no scratchy volume or tone and little microphonic surface noise. Good warm mids, tight bottom end. Pickups lack bite or crunch. Great harmonics though, even rythm pickup has clear tone...not muddy. Good diverse guitar for styles like Korn, Bizkit, or Foo Fighters. Maybe swap out pick ups for a Dimarzio Blaze 7 (wish Seymour Duncan and Bill Lawrence made 7 string pickups!). No dislikes about this guitar. Really good sound.
Action, Fit, & Finish

The setup was good and the action was perfect for a seven string. No buzzing or poorly pressed frets. Pickup height was good with plenty of room for adjustment to your liking. All hardware was solid, parts in right place. I bought this guitar for $250 as a blem from Musicians Friend and there was a small ding (like a thumbnail mark) on the backside edge with a little wood showing. A black felt marker and a small drop of crazy glue should keep out any garbage from the wood. Although it comes with a figured maple top, I choose black to fit my musical taste.

This guitar has some pretty solid hardware. Even the Grover tuners are holding out the beating I gave her playing full cds of Ride the Lighting (Metallica) and The Color and the Shape (Foo Fighters) and Issues (Korn). Stays in tune even when tuned to A. Live playing should not be a problem, and the finish seems tough enough and not likely to scratch. Get strap locks if you play live. Would use this guitar as main, but would always play with backup in case of electronic failure or string breakage.

Been playing for 19 years both recording and live. Just play through ADA MP1 preamp (use BBE to clean up), Carver 120 power amp, and Marshall half stack. I researched this guitar for a week before buying. I would definately replace her immediately with the same model. I really like the finish, body style, hardware, sound and body weight. Favorite feature is it's ability to stay in tune in all positions. I owned an Ibanex RG7420 7 string ($600) and it was too strat sounding (strings sounded boingy). The pickups didn't sound that cruncy and the floyd never stayed in tune, the strings would warble even playing a chord, I sounded like I was playing underwater all the time. In comparison to the Ibanez, I got twice the guitar for half the price using this Dean! I only wish this guitar had a crunchier lead pickup (but no one really has those out there yet, do they?)
Finally, when I recieved this guitar, I was blown away by the EVO 7 string. This is a great guitar for at such a comparable price! Not only does it look beautiful in black, but it plays and sounds really well. Even Jazz players should take a look into trying one of these. Not only can this Dean shake the plates of my cupboard, but it also sings clearly and beautifully when played straight and clean. I'm keeping this guitar! I can't say enough about it. I know it's tuff to find a good 7 string, I've been looking for almost 2 years now. Don't waste your time on a cheap Ibanez, Epiphone, ESP, Schecter or Rogue guitars. Please give the Dean EVO 7 string a try before Dean gets wise to it's value and raises the price!

I love the tone from this guitar it is very warm. I have a Mesa Boogie Single Rectirier and several analog stomp boxes and I also have a Rocktron Piranha preamp and a Lexicon MPX-100 that I use for direct recording. This guitar sounds great through both setups. I also have a Wolfgang, Carvin Bolt-T, and a Brian Moore and the Dean is warmer and louder that all my other guitars.

The guitar was not set-up as well as I would have liked, so I paid $26.00 to have it set up at a local music store. A couple of the screws on the bridge were machined a little two high and caused some ratteling. The holes for the screws were adjusted and the ratteling went away. After the set-up the guitar plays almost as well as my Brian Moore which I paid more than three times as much for! The book matched top is great looking, it looks better than the top on my Brian Moore. The guitar feels very solid overall and is well put together except for the minor adjustment that the bridge needed. The finish is excellent and the quilted top is fantastic.

I like it better than my other 3 guitars, all of which ase made in the USA and which I paid alot more for. I would highly recomend this guitar to anyone looking for a 7-string/Les Paul type guitar with a very warm/smooth sound. If it were stolen I would replace it!
