Epiphone SG Special

This is a bog standard cherry Epi SG special, somebody has correctly identified it as a laminate...I know this is the case as I sawed it up to make it rectangular, filled some of the chamferred bits, and re-styled it in a kellogs frosties box... partly in homage to the fairport convention "Cornflakes" model but mainly to establish my "comedy" presence... see myspace.com/glennyvee. I think the fingerboard is actually a dyed cheaper timber than rosewood. the bridge is quite nifty and doesn't fall off ala gibson, the pick-ups twin humbuckers are epis and are ...OK, the machine heads are ....OK

hmmmm I bought this guitar to chop up....before I did, I will say this...My main stage guitars are gibsons, Flying Vee and tv yellow doublecut... my only experience of SG's was about 17 years ago when a fellow bandmember imported at VAST expense a '61 re-issue. I thought it was wank...it was a flimsy little thing with a whip neck, and I formed the opinion that gibson sgs were not for me...I have grown up ! this ?? 72 purchased second hand beginner model played and sounded very very good... through a marshall dsl...i instantly became Angus Young...and added "whole lotta rosie" to my set list.
I liked this guitar, and would recommend it to anybody as a knockabout or beginner instrument..... I still chopped it up though...and in its new guise, as a real "tiger top" its sounds gggreeeaat !

I will say again how impressed I was with the set up, the lad I bought it from was no player...whichever shop set it up, or importers deserve a big pat on the back.
If i were to be really picky...the bridge has been slightly misplaced so the strings do not run central to the neck, I am happy with the pick-ups which are a bit rougher sounding, and thicker than on my V ...I don't know where the bass response comes from on this skinny body, and I can't beleive epi have specially "voiced" these for the laminate body...perhaps a happy accident ? I have re-soldered all wiring for a single volume..the selecter knob is ok if slightly stiffer than a gibson, and the machines work...ok

Reliability and durability...I don't think so. I use it for 2 opening numbers to get a laugh...it holds tune for that long, under lights as well ! I expect the fret wire to disintegrate with extended use, I may change the machines.... I have fitted schaller strap-loks. It is unfair to expect a chaep beginers instrument to take an extensive on stage pummelling from a midly amusing entertainer...

I have never had any dealings with gibson or epi.... No I lie...norlin ( 70's uk distributers for gibson) wouldn't let me have a wiring diagram for an ES 355 after the 5 way selctor switch started to crackle and not engage... they said Gibson, wouldn't supply it and to get it fixed I would need to return it to the states ! this was on a ten year old guitar.... I found a top name uk luthier to do the job...and he charged me the same rate he probably does his internationally acclaimed clients....hmmmm

This guitar changed my life....If it wasn't for the weak pound, and prices that sg standards are on ebay ( due to euro punters with a strong euro) I would have bought a proper gibson SG standard by now...as It happens I have a few guitars so I don't need an SG desperately...I have played a long time, so don't get excited easily...As this project has worked so well.. I will search for a cheap gibson melody maker to chop up and become the next tiger top..I may utilise the epi's pick-ups though !

Beginners who are non fender fans could do a lot worse than an epi sg special !

I play everything from blues to metal and i find that this guitar works well for any kind of music.

ive used fender amps and line 6 amps with this guitar, and ive used both clean and extreme distortion.

Not so much rich or bright but it does produce a full sound for being a cheap sg copy.

i use allot of pinch harmonics and this guitar has GREAT harmonics.

I found no flaws, but it is a low end guitar.

I have not played any shows with this guitar but it seems like anyone with skill could get great sounds from this axe.
and it seems durable.

I have not dealt with them.

Ive been playing 10 years and own/have owned, A fender strat, a bc.rich bich special edition, a harmony strat, two fullerton strats, and a prs se custom.

I would buy this guitar again.

I love the looks, that is what makes it great, in terms of hardware and technicality your getting what you pay for, but the looks are beyond the price.

i think this is a great beginner guitar and is a wonderful value.

I bought this SG not really knowing what the heck it was. I knew the neck was unusual for an SG (maple, not the normal mahogany) and that the body sounded like it was made of something other than mahogany. I tried it through 3 or 4 amps before I bought it and was very pleasantly surprised. Took it home and did a little research and found out the low-down and this model:

This is the budget version of an SG, so I think the appointments are pretty good for what you're paying for. However, due to reliability problems, I'm knocking the rating down a couple of points. See below.

What makes this guitar worth buying, modding, and fixing is that it sounds very, very good. When jazzed up with a couple of mods and adjusted correctly, the SG Special has a very open sound with plenty of upper harmonics (the alder/maple body has a lot to do with this to my mind) Fast palm-muted runs have just the right amount of resonance under high gain settings: not so little that the notes sound stunted, but not so much that the palm mutes are uncontrollable. Lead sounds are authoritative and pinch harmonics are good (though not excellent). The 24" scale makes bends and vibrato a breeze, though (as expected) it cancels out some harmonics and makes for a somewhat dull clean sound from both bridge and neck. The tone control is fairly useful. When wound fully up, the sound is biting in a pleasing way, and wound down gives a nice warm legato-like feel (more noticeably under distortion). The neck pickup is slightly disappointing as it is over-bassy and lacks a little for definition. The middle pickup setting is great for situations where you want to back off your volume and clean up your signal, though I should mention that neither of the pickups cleans up very easily.

In sum, I think this guitar covers a lot of ground sonically. Those who have been disappointed with this guitar seem to have missed the point that they paid less than $200 dollars for a guitar. I'm sorry folks, but if you want great materials and fancy appointments, you will have to spend probably at least $1000 on your instrument. If you're going to buy a guitar like this, assume you will have to set it up and maybe do some repair work and modifications. I think there are a lot of guitarists here who want way too much in return for their piddly expenditures. And they expect to sound like Van Halen without putting forth the effort and time required to coax a good sound out of any guitar regardless of materials. Van Halen made his first guitars out of spare parts he sometimes got out of the trash! Jimi Hendrix played a stock CBS strat he pulled off the wall--there was nothing special about his guitars either. The point is, kids, that they made due with the equipment they had and ended up making amazing music. If you want a fancy guitar, pay for it. If you don't, fiddle with what you can afford. But most of all, as Zappa would say, shut up and play yer guitar!

I can't comment on the factory setup as I bought this guitar used. I will say that it's easy to adjust action and intonation. I like that the neck is maple (maple is my favorite neck wood) as it is much stronger than your typical mahogany neck. However, the neck joint presents some problems. It has already started to show stress cracking, and I'm concerned that it won't hold up if dropped or gigged with. I don't know if that should discourage anyone from getting the SG Special though, since a ton of the Gibson SG's have similar problems. Gibson-style necks in general are somewhat fragile (mostly due to poor design) and need to be babied. Ever tried to break a strat neck? It's nigh impossible! But, because Gibson (and Epiphone) are locked into their traditionalist attitudes toward product design, they refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem with the strength of their necks. Having said that, I'm not sure that I can fault Epiphone for making a somewhat fragile neck. Until Gibson makes design changes, this will be a problem for their whole product line including the high end custom guitars.

But, I will fault Epiphone's negligence when it comes to the SG Special's bridge. I play with 11-gauge strings which while not being extremely heavy strings, still have a lot more string tension than the standard 9's. As soon as I installed my strings, I noticed that the stopbar began to pull toward the neck and got steadily worse. I had to reinforce the mounting holes in the body with superglue to stabilize the posts for the stopbar. When I examined the holes, I found that the fixtures the posts joined with were digging into the body material, and that the material was actually GIVING WAY! It would be very simple for Epiphone to have reinforced these holes with some sort of material. Eh, at least it was an easy fix.

Also, I ended up replacing the tuners. They simply sucked.

Replaced the knobs too. They were ugly. Strat-style knobs look and work better.

Despite my somewhat low ratings above, I do recommend this as a beater/experimental guitar. It sounds good, it plays good, and for a little extra cash, you can soup it up. For all its design flaws, the SG Special is a fun guitar to play. Also, the woods used in this guitar make it sound better than most Gibson SG's! It's got me thinking about building a Warmoth SG with an alder body and a maple neck (but obviously with better hardware and wood). This guitar has also turned me on to the shorter Gibson scale length.

So, for the money, it's a lot of fun. I would never pay more than a couple hundred bucks for this guitar though. It deserves to be cheap.

This Guitar is Very poorly made, it has almost no features.

The sound in this guitar is Alright, the Humbuckers do all right for a beginer but for every one else the sound is poor.

When I got this guitar right away i noticed the cheap wood and finish. It barley stays in tune, the tuning pegs dont turn smoothly at all and the pickup selector would stop working every once and a while and i would have to jiggle it around to get it to work.

This guitar will last about a few months before problems occor but overall i think it would take a year and half to get this guitar into terrible condtion.

I have Been playing for about 3 years now i started off with a knock-off strat which lasted me two years, this guitar lasted me for four months.overall this guitar is very poor i think it would be great for a beginer.

Epiphone Guitars are known for weak necks. You can find them cheap on ebay with cracks and broken headstocks. I have an acoustic and the headstock broke off when it was fairly new. I own a bunch of guitars and I have never had this happen before. I have had a minor stress crack or two on some older guitars. The Epiphone line looks good and sounds ok but dont expect a Gibson. I like my Squire better but I have a Gibson USA SG that I use on stage. I would look elsewhere for a guitar.

They will tell you that it was dropped when the headstock falls off. I do know one gut that got his Epiphone Les Paul replaced but I think the store ate it.

Basic features, 2p/u, V/T controls and 3-way switch. Laminated maple/alder body, bolt-on maple neck. Color is olive drab, the only one I've seen. It was purchased new from Muscian's Friend. This guitar was bought in the mid 90's but I'm just now getting around to posting a review.

I play primarily through an original Fender Blues Deluxe. I don't use any effects any more, just plug and play. I play blues and 60's & 70's rock and roll. The pickups were typical cheap humbuckers and I swapped them out for a Carvin M22T in the bridge and M22V in the neck. This changed a muddy sounding guitar into an articulate and clear sounding axe. The neck is clean and clear enough for serious jazz and with the guitar volume dimed on the bridge p/u you have all the AC/DC you could want. I'll eventually change the switch and control pots but they are ok for now.

The finish was very good and all the parts fit clean and tight. The action was set up average. I did put a strap button on the tip of the upper bout to make it balance better. The tuners keep it tuned perfect and the frets are crowned and and polished to perfection. Intonation is dead on. I bought this guitar to play slide on but gave up and it had been setting unused for about 6 or 7 years. I changed the strings to 10's and set the neck as straight as I could get it then lowered the action as low as possible without buzzing. I plugged straight into my Fender Blues Deluxe and instant AC/DC. This thing plays smooth as silk and and sounds like a million bucks. I've been playing for about 45 years and this axe sure doesn't play or sound like the $200 guitar it really is. This axe might be a "one in a million" and I'm glad I'm the one who got it.

It seems to be built very solid and I have used it on gigs several times. My main axe is a Strat but when I need some good crunchy rock & roll, my little green frog comes to life.

I'm very glad I bought this axe. I wound up using it for a different purpose than I bought it for but I'm sure glad it worked out that way. Overall I'd give it an 8 without the p/u change, but with it it would have to be a very solid 10.

Only a 3 because the fit of the parts are so bad and poorly constructed that proper intonation is impossible. What sound you do get does sound like an SG although a very anemic one that tends to annoy the ears rather than stir the soul. Looks pretty... but like your mama told you looks aren't anything.

Where to start... frets levelling is terrible, the nut was cut to abritrary depths for the strings, the neck pocket in the body was milled incorrectly, the tune o-matic bridge and stop tail peice positioning are off so as to throw out the string alignment .

There is no doubt that this would be reliable because it would probably sit in the case it is that bad.

Can't repair bad engineering... but this is the was Gibson / Epiphone wants it... if their low end guitars were playable and sounded good why would somebody spend Thousands on an actual Gibson SG or Half that on a "Nice" Epiphone.

I've been playing for 10 years, I own a Gibson Explorer, An entry level PRS, a dillion Les Paul, and a Pawn shop prize Vantage PRS kinda copy.... I was able to set these up and they are all very playable. I play these guitars though various amps including a Fender 75, Traynor YBA-1A, Hiwatt DR-103, Musicman 212-65, Garnet Gnome. If you are a wannabee and never intend on ever playing and just want a guitar for decoration then by all means buy one... it's pretty enough. But as a caution to players and PARENTS who want to buy their child their first guitar.... this guitar sounds bad, it cannot be properly tuned and that will make it sound bad.... as a result the novice player will quickly stop playing because they think that it is them that sound bad. I've tried several Epiphones in the past and they always leave me disapointed to more or a lesser degree, usually with the construction quality, and setup/playability... a guitar that is well built can be set up into an EASY to play instrument. The Kid I bought this from ended up taking up the drums.

Pretty good for a cheap guitar I use it with a Fender Princeton amp.

Fair, doesn't stay in tune as well as I think it should. Color is nice finish is very good. Action was fairly well set up from the factory I have never adjusted the neck.

I don't play it that much, I'm a bass player use this guitar for ideas and fun.

Very nice for the price. Cheap and looks good, sounds good, fun to play. I've had it kicking around my house about two years seems fairly durrable.

This is a beginners guitar, period. It is an entry level guitar and I dont think that Epiphone is trying to market it as otherwise.
I have read some other reviews on this guitar, and they are from beginners so they dont really have the knowledge to be giving a review. I bought one new for 140 bucks out the door, it has two generic humbucking pickups that are cheap and sound that way, but a beginner is not going to be able to tell what a good pickup really sounds like so that is ok. The tuners are also cheap but adequate. One of the best things about the guitar is that it has no trem on it so it stays in tune reasonably well. The neck is thin and the action was set fairly well and low for such a cheap guitar, I consider it a very easy to play guitar so its role as a beginners guitar it does pretty well. Just know you will outgrow it, if you keep playing, I would suggest buying a used one in good shape because you can get them for next to nothing.

It sounds like what it is, a couple of cheap humbuckers. Someone that buys this guitar most likely does not have a great amp either, and as a beginner they are not ready to appreciate things like the tone of tube amps or the difference in tone of pickups. I dont find any bad noises etc. scratchy pots, so it is not "defective" just will loose its appeal as one learns how to play. Probably the best feature is the neck, it is thin and the back of the neck is easy to slide your hand on. The second best thing is the stop tail bridge, it is very basic so it is hard to screw up

Again, it reflects its price pretty well. The factory sets them up adequately if they are like what I got. The worst feature is how thin this thing is.

Nobody is going to be gigging with this guitar, it is a good guitar for a beginner, it is basic, certainly not spectacular in any way, but it has a decent thin neck that is easy to learn on, hopefully by the time you are ready to move on you will be able to learn more about guitars also, and you can go shopping at stores and compare them to this one. The best way to find a guitar you like is to go in to a big music store, actually play every guitar that you can possibly afford, and play all of them, even if you dont like the look, the most important part of any guitar is the neck, you can always change the pickups but you have to have a neck that you like and fits your hands and that is comfortable for YOU to play. So dont be embarassed that you are not Eddie Van Halen, dont ask the store clerk to play it for you. Suck it up and play whatever you know however well you can, no real musician is going to make fun of you because you are a beginner. Having a salesman play it for you means nothing. This is a personal choice, so find a guitar that you find is comfortable and easy for you to play, if there was one "best" guitar for everyone there would not be hundreds of models for sale. It only matters that you like how it plays and how it sounds. I still keep my SG Special only because it is worth about 50 bucks used, and you should not pay more for a used one than that, and even though I only use it as a test guitar for pups, it is too thin for some of them to fit. It will last probably as long as you want to play it.

never needed support, just play it and when you get an idea of what is going on by learning buy a better guitar.

I am giving this a 7 because looking at it as a pure beginners guitar, it serves the purpose, and it will be easy to play and stay in tune well enough so that a beginner will not get frustrated.

Strings? If you are a beginner you can do two things, buy some decent plain strings, eg Dean Markley Blue Steels and let your fingers build up callouses so the strings dont hurt your fingers, or you can buy Elixers which are coated strings, these are much easier on your fingers and are good quality strings. You dont need to change strings that often, so dont go cheap on them, also as you learn to hear the tone of the pickups etc, you will also find strings you like by trying them yourself, again this is personal, I listed two that are good and I use on different guitars for different reasons, so there is not one string that will be the best for every player or every guitar, but you cant go wrong with either of those.

Cheap black stripped sg. The first guitar I ever bought was a G-400 so this one brings back good memories. For the money you can't beat the quality.

cheapo pickups actually sound decent.

Tuners are a little cheap and go out of tune slightly. This was a musicians friend reject guitar that someone did a little fretwork on and sold me at a blues jam. It plays great now that it has been set up.

Seems durable enough. This is my "don't give a crap" backup guitar for gigging.

Been playing about 10 years and currently own about 200 guitars. Again for the money you can't beat this SG. Serious hod rodding potential.

Obviously the guitar was cheaply produced, with a few layers of Alder and capped with a maple veneer. I would recommend a pickup upgrade to some original Gibsons or maybe some Dimarzip's, then you will have a pretty solid guitar.

I give it a 10 only because I dropped a set of 500T 496R inside. Before that, the sound rating I allow is a 5 - vanilla Epiphone garbage with no character.

Action is somewhat high, but that's okay. This guitar plays well for such a simple machine. The SG, whether you pay 100 or 1000, is a block of wood with 2 pickups, very simple. This lower cost model does nothing to take away from that simple yet deadly effective intent.

I'm not sure I would trust this guitar in a live setting. However, is the perfect guitar to bang around and rehearse with. This is definitely an instrument where you will not cringe if it gets bumped, or cry if it gets stolen. At the same time, it is a very effective axe and, again, now that I installed the 500T/496R combo, keeps up with those 500 dollar guitars out there. A warning, the neck joint is weak.

Let me first just say that I am writing this mostly to inform amateur guitarists ( as they will probably be the ones buying this). I was a brand new player when i bought this guitar and put about 40+ hours reading reviews, trying guitars, and asking friends about what guitar to buy. I eventually decided to buy this Epiphone SG Special. I hope this helps you beginners (as well as veterans) interested in this guitar.

Made in China, no indication of when if was made, but im guessing no earlier than 2004, bought it in January 2006 right after the Christmas season. 22 frets, neck made of maple, 2 open coil humbucker pickups, one tone knob and one volume knob, 3-way pickup selector, chrome hardware. Good set-up right out of the box, Good setup overall. My only complaints here are that there are slight grooves in the fretboard that can catch your fingernails when you are bending strings. It's not really a big deal if you keep your nails short on your fretting hand. It stays in tune quite well, tuners stay relatively stiff. The accessories were great for a beginner. Amp was decent considering it was a 10-watt. All in all great setup for a basically sub-$200 guitar.

The sound is pretty damn good. It doesn't necessarily sound as good as say a 500-900 dollar guitar, but for a beginner to learn on its great. With high gain the distortion effect is great. It defintely caters to the heavily distorted sound, but does just fine clean and even has great resonance acoustically (without being hooked to an amp). Stock strings were ok, but i recently switched them out with a set of $10 elixir strings i bought under the advice of a guitar center employee and it made a hell of a difference. lot brighter sound once the strings are changed. pickups are ok, not spectacular, but again, it was a 200 dollar guitar. great for the price i paid. i compared this sound to about 10 other sub-200 dollar guitars and this sounds the best by far, much better than its fender and yamaha counterparts. I like to play everything and this can handle it all. A better amp and strings can make this a damn good investment if you want it to be. Also, if you wanted to mod this, different pickups might be in order, but i will leave that up to you, as i have no experience in moding guitars.

Action is a little high for my taste, but not too bad, helped develop my finger strength and coordination. at the higher end of the frets (15-22) its a little narrow and hard to get good precision on the notes. but nothing terrible, again, great for the price. finish is solid. Body is laminated alder/maple. Like i said it was set-up great out of the box, nut was well adjusted, so was bridge.

This guitar is durable as all hell. ive hit the headstock several times against the fridge (which is right next to my desk in my dorm) and it doesnt even have a scratch. had it for 3 months and hit it a couple times on a couple different things. And so has my roommate (who is a bass player and also an acoustic guitar player). My roomates acoustic is all messed up from him hitting it on his bed/desk etc. But everytime he hits my guitar on something it does nothing to it. Not a scratch on it at all in the 3 hard months i've played it. Extremely reliable.

All in all, this is the best guitar I have found in all of the 200 dollar guitars i have tested. It sounds great, is set up just fine. Suits beginners great, especially if you buy it with all of the other stuff in the player pack. Damn good deal. i've only been playing 3 months but i've done a lot of research and have extensive experience in piano and violin. My roommate, a bass player of 8 years said its damn good considering i paid only 200. I'll likely continue to use this guitar for another year or so until i feel like buying a higher end model. When i went to go pick the guitar up i asked the salesperson what he recommeded, and he said he recommeded this guitar over the epiphone Special II and the other guitars in this price range because it was a more faithful, albeit cheaper, replica of the famous Gibson SG, which is a superb guitar. if it was stolen i might get a stratocaster, Gibson SG or 450-700 dollar guitar just because im decently good now and would like to experiment with better hardware. But for beginners and veterans alike, for the price i paid it was the best i've encountered. Could probably be even better with 150-200 bucks of mods. Great guitar.

Made in Indonesia, cherry red finish nice wood grain. Bolt on next, maple fingerboard with 2 zebra humbucker pickups. 1 volume, 1 tone, with 2 way selector switch. Tune-o-matic bridge, plastic nut, and decent tuners. Bought this in the "poor boy pack" came with an epiphone 10w amp, strap, picks, electronic tuner, padded gig bag and instructional DVD. Giving it a 9 for features as this was the pack, which gave me everything I needed to get started right away for 200 bucks.

Plugged it into a VOX Valvetronix amp when trying it out, sounded fantastic. Rich full sound, not bright, but decent tone. Got lucky, intonation was perfectly adjusted right out of the box. Great starter rock guitar, but I've gotten some great blues tones out of it as well. The clean setting on the amp showed the pickup's weakness, a little muddy. It's a 150 dollar guitar though, I'm extremely happy with it.

Guitar was set up perfectly as noted regarding action, intonation was almost dead on right out of the box. Slight fret buzz at the second fret A string, however that was fixed with a slight truss rod adjustment. Plays like butter compared to some other guitars in this price range. Finish is gorgeous, pictures don't do it justice. The cherry is translucent, and the wood grain stands out more in person than the pics.

Only had it about a week and half, seems to be built somewhat sturdy. I wound't gig with it, doesn't seem built strong enough for road wear. Finish seems like it would last, stock strings are garbage, change them out.

Made in Korea or Indonesia, laminated, plywood with mahogony top piece. Not sure of year made, one volum and one tone control, three way switch, two humbucking pickups. Bolt on neck. After market Grover tuners.

Very musical. Unplugged, nice ringing sound, plugged in the guitar sounds very good. Looks like standard humbuckers, but unsure, pickups sound excellent, will not need to replace them. Very good clean sound, pickups sound like they could be alnico. Works well with distortion. Not too bright, not too bassy with very good midrange. Definately not a Les Paul, not an Gibson SG either, but it does have it's own unique sound which is very cool.

Action was set up very well, I just had to adjust the pick up height. Very nice finish on the guitar, more of the classic cherry finish that Gibson uses.

Guitar feels very solid, would probably use it on a gig without a backup.

Had to deal with Epiphone 10 years ago and they responded quickly and adequately.

I've been playing 15 years and have found this guitar to be better than I expected. The special series by Epiphone seems to be hit or miss, the hit ones are excellent and the miss ones can be very disappointing.

This review is for the Epiphone SG Special, made '03 in China, I think. This one is a Limited Edition model with wine red finish, zebra pickups, and gold-plated hardware, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot markers. Two white/black humbucking pickups with 1 tone/1 volume and 3-way selector toggle. The Special seems to have a shorter scale than a standard SG (this is the only SG I've ever played) as the fretboard extends farther onto the body. Has a polyurethane gloss finish and Tune-o-matic bridge/stopbar tailpiece. The tuners are the same junk that was on my Epi Les Paul Special I bought in 2000-wouldn't hold tune on a bet. Has a slim neck with medium-jumbo frets. No accessories whatsoever.

If you're looking for an axe to play lightnin'-fast leads on, this one will do the trick...as long as you don't expect Gibson-like sound. The pickups just aren't the greatest, but for jamming/practicing or just plain fun, it should be OK. I've only tried it on a couple of low-wattage amps, a 20 watt Rogue and a Behringer GX110. But I can get much better sounds with my Carvin pickup-equipped L.P. Special on these amps. There are no extraneous noises at all from the electronics or pickups. I like to fingerpick so I gave this one to my son (he's more of a rocker!)'cause it's too hard to play fingerstyle.

The set-up on this SG was about what you'd expect for an axe that cost under $200. You basically have to mess with these cheaper guitars until you get them where they need to be. This is easily accomplished with the Tune-o-Matic bridge, however, so you or your music shop can have it spot-on without too much trouble. The finish on the SG Special is very nice with no noticeable blemishes or flaws. The biggest issue with this guitar for me was, that if you're playing and exert any forward pressure on the guitar body at all with your belly it sounds like you're using a whammy bar-which it doesn't have! And often as not you have to re-tune when this happens. Just too flimsy, I guess...as long as you don't get too wild with it, it's OK. Fretwork is remarkably good for a low-buck electric like this.

As stated above, the SG Special is too weak in the neck-to-body joint for much hard gigging, unless you play it (calmly) sitting down. All the hardware, except the tuners, seems solid enough...I bought and installed some gold diecast tuners on this SG and helped it immensely. Strap buttons aren't Straplocks, but they're not bad.
With proper care (and carefulness!) it should last many years.

Only called Epiphone/Gibson C.S. one time and wasn't too thrilled with them...you'd be better off taking it back to the music store where you bought it.

I'm 51 and have been playing since I was a kid. I own 6 guitars, a bass, 5-string banjo and a mandolin and 4 amps. I pretty much knew what to expect when I ordered this unit...pretty to look at but nothing "Special" as a player's axe. My son likes it, however, and his friends think it's "cool", so I'll leave it at that.
My favorite feature (other than price)is the wine red finish & gold hardware, really looks good. For what it cost, I can't gripe too much.

Well, this guitar is pretty gun. I bought it in 2003. It has an exceptonally good sound when the rhythm humbucker is selected. It has thaat great Blues sound. It is that classic cherry colour and looks great.

Very good sound for blues and rock. If you looking for a clean guitar buy a f#$kin stratocaster.

When i bought it there was a centermetre gap between the edge of the fretboard and the string.

This guitar is very dependable i have gigged wth it about 5 times. It is just stupid not having a backup guitar.

Poor-pack SG, glossy red colour, 2xHB, TOM bridge, 1 volume pot, 1 tone pot, 3 way switch, no pickguard.

Resonates well unpluged. Pickups are little week, but decent sounding.
Not exeptionally clean tone, but well suited for Blues , Rock and Metal. Acceptable sustain. Tone controll pot serves only for ornamental purpose. Pickups are dead quiet. Not bad axe for the price.

Finish is exellent. Smooth, glassy clear coat. Nice, slender neck - Epiphone's trademark. Lighing action. Tuners are crap! One of them rattle, one is hard to turn. Bridge nuts slightly missaligned which makes it harder to lower. I'm giving it 7 because tuners and bridge, otherwise would be 10.

Looks solid. Neck joint is strong. Hardware nicely chromed. Finish seems scrach resistant. Tuners need to be changed.

This will supplement my review from a couple of weeks ago...

I have now used my new Epi SG at four consecutive gigs, and I was basically happy with its sound and general performance, and still love the feel of its neck-- really lets you "dig in" on solos-- but I was a little disenchanted with the fact that the G string tended to go noticeably sharp when fretted, despite the fact that I had fully adjusted its saddle on the tune-o-matic bridge to maximize the length of the string. As a result, I had to tune the G string just a little bit flat in its open position, which in turn resulted in a miserable-sounding traditional first-position "C" chord !! So... (read on...)

... just yesterday I noticed that the individual adjustable saddles on the 4th, 5th & 6th strings were actually placed within the tune-o-matic bridge kinda backwards, if you will, so that, given the contour (shape) of the saddle pieces, it's possible to lengthen the contact point on those strings to a greater degree than if the pieces were situated facing the opposite way. The saddle pieces on the first three strings were situated in the reverse (and visually more conventional) direction, presumably because the manufacturer feels those strings don't need as much "lengthening" adjustment as the 4th, 5th & 6th strings. So, I took all of the strings off, removed the individual saddle piece for the G string, turned it around the opposite direction, put it back in, adjusted it so as to maximize the length of the G string, put on a fresh set of strings, tuned the guitar up to pitch, and... WOW !! The G string is now PERFECTLY intonated, it has a perfectly precise octave from the open position to the 12th fret, I no longer have to tune it flat in the open position, and the guitar now plays dead-on accurately all the way up and down the fretboard!

Everything still holding up quite well. I just love the way this axe looks, with its SG shape, and its cherry red finish. It's so inexpensive, yet so decent !! It's a guitar you want to take really good care of.

I started playing when I was 13. I'm 52 now. I've played continuously during those years. This guitar is an absolute STEAL !! I've always used a Strat, but I just love my little Epiphone SG Special !! It's so comfortable to play, and has a nice edgy attitude to it ! It's well-made. No frills, but beautiful in its simplicity.

the features on this guitar are great, there are non locking tuners, the gig bag doesnt give alot of padding and the strap leaves the guitar to slant downward once you let go,and the cable it comes with pops out of the amp easily,it was a 2005, made in china..very good guitar

the sound is great it has a rich full powerfull sound, but can also have a jazzy or pop rock sound also, unplugged is great because it sound just like an accoustic, i am using it with a epiphone studio 10 amp(came with guitar in player pack) and it a=is a great amp, lots of different distortions

Bought new from Musician's Friend. Features have been amply covered in prior reviews. This is a base-model electric guitar. No frills, but I will say that for the relatively small cost involved, this is a very nice instrument. The cherry red finish is very nice, and it looks great. Out of the box, it was set up quite well. I immediately installed a fresh set of strings and tweaked the intonation a little bit, and this little axe feels and plays quite well!!

It sounds really good. I'm using it thru my little Vox Pathfinder 15-R, hooked into an old 1 X 12 speaker cabinet, and it sounds terrific! I also have a Dunlop Crybaby Wah, and a Digitech RP-50 effects box, hooked up. The overall combination has worked out very well for purposes of the club-type gigs I've played with it.

I've been playing for 39 years. I bought a Fender Stratocaster in 1973, and it had been my only electric for all those subsequent years, but I had always loved the look and feel of the SG style guitar. So I got this for myself for Christmas, and thus far I am totally delighted with it. For the money, it is very impressive. I particularly like the access to the higher register that it provides with its cutaways, and the fretboard has a nice feel to
it-- it feels like I can "dig in" on lead parts with more confidence than I did with the Strat, and that helps my confidence, which in turn fuels my imaginativeness. Overall, a very good value!

this guitar was made in 2004. it was made in china. has 22 frets, shiney black, tone, volume, and and three way switch (rythym, treble, both). H/H pickup config standard. plywood body and maple neck. sg body, stop tail piece, non-locking tuners.

it sounded good when i got it but as i used it more the tone quality decreased. i use a 20 watt trynor amp. the treble switch has stopped working and i have to fiddle with the patch cord to get it to work somtimes. it has got a low hum when left without a palm over the pickups and its a little to full sounding for my liking.

the finish is shiney black it was not badly done. the action is perfect for me. the guitar has had some problems with the bridge i recenly got it fixed because it fell out of the guitar. the pickups buzz, the tuners are loose and come undone quickly it was finished well it just doesnt stand up to the dialy wear and tear

i have owned this guitar for a year and have been using it recently anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours daily and it has started to fall apart. the bridge has fallen out, the tuners untune quickly, the pickups are buzzing and wiring is coming apart, the rythym is the only setting that works and the fret board is not taking my playing very well.

this is a good guitar if you are seeing if you would like to take up the intstrument. it wont last long if you play it daily. i would not replace this guitar because it is now a heap of junk. i am going to buy a godin freeway classic as my next guitar and once youve been playing junk for a while a good guitar feels really nice. once agian its a good first guitar but if your going to get into it like i did you'll need somthing more durable because it wont last long.

I am looking at it right now. And one sticker says, "Made in China". 2nd sticker says, "Inspected by Gabor, China". 3rd says, "100% inspected and set up in the USA by E (Epiphone)". So, who's to say? 22 frets, rosewood frtbd. Mahogany neck. Mahogany body. Wine Red. Open Coil Zebra pickups. Wht/Blk. Humbuckers. Gold Hardware; bridge and stoppiece. Gold tuners. Covered, or sealed, tuners. This is the area where I'd pick at. To me, my taste, I'd keep everything, but replace those tuners w/ either Gold Schallers, Grovers, or if I'm really feeling like it's deserving, Gold Sperzels. Those Sperzels tuning pegs, man, I've seen on a buddy's Fender Strat. He swears by them. They really help a guitar hold it's tune. This isn't an endorsement for Sperzels, btw. Passive pickups. One Volume and one tone knob. Want to eventually convert it to 2 volume knobs. Tone knobs on a guitar are somewhat useless, IMO. Like what Eddie VH stated, why he never had one on his guitars. The Neck/Fretboard feels nice and wide. Frets are semi jumbo, kind of in between. Came with a 10' cable and Allen wrenches.

I like how this guitar resonates unplugged. Sounds great, almost has an acoustic quality to it. Amplified, wow. These pickups are pretty decent. For stock ones. I can get some beefy rock sounds, set up my amp EQ for some country twanging, or use the Rhythm Pickup for Bluesy type sounds. Have to configure guitar AND amp. My style of music? Rock, for lack of a better description. Old and New. Everything. From 50's rock to the 21st Century NU rock. And other styles, country, jazz, blues, R/B, etc...

I bought this from Musicians Friend, April of 2005. Paid $119.99. I like this neck for the simple reason that it came shipped pretty straight; I uncovered the truss rod plastic plate, tweaked the truss rod a little to give it somewhat of "bow", not much, changed the factory issued strings (whatever they were) to Dean Markley's. 09-46. Now, gives more growl and bite. I raised the pickups slightly, just my preference. Bridge is fine. Saddles I adjusted slightly; no real fixing required. Nut is fine. Bone Ivory. Works fine. Really like this Wine Red Finish. With the Gold hardware, is really a looker.

I've played live with this one; and it was fine. Would like to replace those tuners b/c they really don't hold tune very well, and for around $100.00 or so, could get some Sperzels on there. Or for $60.00, Grovers. Hardware: over time, could replace with Gibson parts. Etc...Finish is fine. We'll see if it lasts over time. Strap buttons? Hope they hold up. I don't do the 80's Metal "toss the axe around" thing. Dependable. Have NEVER gigged without a backup, period. Won't start now.

Epiphone seems decent. Registered my guitar with them. And Musicians Friend has always been good. Limited lifetime warranty from Epiphone. I take care of my stuff, but it's good to know there is a warranty.

Been playing a LONG TIME. I just wanted this b/c I'd always thought to buy an SG at some point. And for around $120, what the heck? Not a Gibson, but pretty well made, except for the tuners. I'd buy this over the other Epiphone SG Specials, if I had to do it again. Have played them at Guitar Center, and wasn't impressed. These particular guitars, btw, may no longer be availible at M.F. as of 12/05. I got the one with Gold Hardware; then, std. silver hardware models were issued. Wine Red. And now, when I go to the Website, no longer see them. Just the plain ol' SG Specials. Hmm...look on E-Bay. I'd recommend it; like mine quite a bit.

2005 Epiphone Sg Special. Has simple volume and tone knobs. Decent open-coil pickups. Has a nice fat neck(good for bare chords). Has great grover tuners.

Great sound for what I paid for it. It sounds pretty good through my Roland Cube 60 from 1983. Has a nice,fat Gibson sound to it.

Nothing was wrong with this guitar when i bought it and there is nothing wrong with it now

Sounds great after I raised the pickups alittle and changed the strings to super slinky 9's. Nice tone, sounds better distorted than clean.

Played it live a few times, I like the feel of it, Dependable, and hey for $129, what can I complain about.

I sold an old gibson SG a while back and wanted to get one just for nostalgia. For $129 It was a steal.

You don't have much to choose from with the 2 knob and 3 way selector they don't change the tone very much at all. The Tuners are terrible the guitar gets out of tune after 30 min. of playing. Although the finish is fairly nice. It looks better than it is.

The pickups are very generic and have a decent range. It can be very noisy on the treble setting but dull on all the others. Handles distortion pretty well. Good for begginers who don't have much musical preferance

Only had one flaw when recieved the jack nut was loose and when trying to tighten it a wire broke a little sodder fixed it easily though. Has a pretty nice finish

I wouldn't use it live but it probably would survive. But would never use it without a backup. For practice it is dependable. The finish does seem to scratch fairly easily from heavy playing.

ALL the parts, from screws to knobs, tuners, tune-o-matic bridge, "humbucker pickups", 3-way pickup selector, output jack and cable and strings that came with it, all are just rubbish! Screws are like tin, everything feels like coming apart after few months using it. Strap buttons seems strong tho. Ye and it's rose finish. Nice color btw.

I've been playing now for 6-7 seven months, first played couple of months with a cheap-o thomann Harley Benton strato copy. I have a Behringer GM110 practice amp, which gives real nice sounds. Im not quite sure if my "SG" sounds like it's supposed to, but with some heavy metal stuff it's ok. Blues I can't quite get out of it. Not much hum, unlike with the Strato-copy. Although, the bit cheaper strato copy sounds better to my ears than the "SG". Variety? Well, some. Tone knob is nice, and has an "in-between" unlike some others.. One thing is for sure, the pickups suck ass! You can get decently nice'n' warm heavy sound from it, but don't expect too much.

It was set up just fine. Action was, and is pretty perfect. Dunno about pickup adjust.. they seem so crappy it doesn't matter how they're set. Tried to screw the bridge pickup upper, but the screw went round immediately.
There was couple of flaws in the fretboard, but nothing major. Paint is fine, mostly cuz it's so damn thick you can't see the wood under it. In the depression where the neck joins the body, there's a little crack in the paint. Haven't wanted to mess it up by removing the neck and to see if the wood is cracked.. guess it's just paint. After a while, the tone knob started having this annoying rattle whenever adjust it with volume in amp. More faults in next part..

I would certainly not use it live. Atleast not with any backup. All seemed fine when I got it, but not long till everything started coming loose. Like I meantioned earlier, all the screws are like tin. The tune-o-matic bridge's screws came immediately so loose they seem to move by themselves. Output jack came loose some time ago, and will probably fall off in a while. The pickup selector seems so schitty i try not to touch it that much. I don't trust the tuners. The plywood plate that covers the top of the body is so thin from where the electronics are, that a little knock would make a massive hole in it. The holes for the knobs, selector and jack are drilled so badly the <plywood> plate has taken serious damage in it, and in the thinnest part it's only couple of millimeters thick. Guess the thick paint is keeping it all together!
Now the nicest part; just some weeks ago I noticed the fretwires had worn all bumpy at frets 3-9, under the treble strings. I'm not an expert, but somehow I feel those wires shouldn't be so soft they'd wore out from bending! This far I was moderate happy with this guitar, but now I just wanna get my money back and get something decent. Every f**king thing in it is made from the cheapest god damn parts one can find!!! No good, wouldn't last for a two years in playable shape. May seem like a tank, but only by replacing everythin replacable you can make it last.

I've been playing for 6-7 months, first coupla' months with my friends strato-copy. I only own my behringer amp and this "SG-p-o-s". I'm far from pro, but I can tell you this guitar isn't worth the money if you're somewhat serious about playing. If it would be stolen, or lost, I would only buy similar IF I only had 150? to waste and no chance of getting more in a year or so, and if the dealer would promise me it won't break down after another six months. Hell, I'll get it fixed or replaced, (as there's no chance getting my money back anymore) and then sell it to some beginning fool. 2x the price and you'll get Epi's G-400. I'll look for that. Tho dunno if it's Epiphone that sucks..or jst this model. =)
When first got it, sure it's nice thing, easy to play and sounds somewhat decent, looks cool and is in SG shape. If you're beginning player, and are looking to buy this, consider, *how serious you are with learning to play, *are you absolutely sure you can't wait and save some money to get something better. If you want guitar you'll be playing for years, Sg Special..NO. if you got too much money in your hands and just wanna see if you could learn to play something, SG Special..YES

This is one I bought 04/05, from Musicians Friend. It was a clearance item; had to get it. I guess I suffer from G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), 'cause this one was too good to pass up. For $119, got me a Wine Red SG. Body is Mahogany. 2 "Zebra" Humbucker pickups; 1 blk and 1 wht coil. Gold plated hardware: tuners, bridge, tailpiece. 1 volume and 1 tone knob/control. Pickup selector switch in between the knobs. Input jack on the front of gtr. For this price, I can indulge in my Angus Young imitation, heh!! Rosewood fretboard and neck. Good cut ivory nut. Frets are medium to semi jumbo, fretbd semi wide. Action was good coming out of the box. The tuners, for being non sealed, hold their tune suprisingly well.

Has a nice unplugged sound and resonance one doesn't hear in alot of gtrs. Plugged in, even better. Bright sounds, but I've been able to get some cool tones suited for blues and jazz out of this one. Good so far.

Like I said, action was good outta the box. But I'll take it in for basic intonation work. Strobe tuning, etc...the paint looks uneven in some spots when one holds it up to the light, but that'd be considered nit picking for the $119 that was spent. Satisfied overall.

Will it stand live playing? We'll see!!! I'm using it for a gig next several weeks/months, so. Strap buttons are good. All other things: we'll see. I'm sure it'll be fine. I won't thrash on it like Angus does his!!!

Been playing a long time. Have mucho gear; sound system, etc. Like to buy cheap guitars and build them up with better pickups, bridges, tuners, etc. If the bodies are made well, with decent wood, then sure. I really like this gtr as of now. Never had a SG, so for the price, what the heck. Light weight, as SG's tend to be. Easy on the neck and shoulder. Straight forward rock guitar, rock solid. "For Those About To Rock, We Salute YOU!!!" I'm out....peace.

2002-03 mada in china with 21 frets i believe. Its got a ok painted red body with 1 volume and 1 tone control with a 3 way selector. The humbuckers are both made by epiphone. It had a tune-o-matic bridge and came with a gig bag.

I play lots of styles. I like the white stripes garage rock, then move into the heavy metal. This guitar handles the distortion OK, not great. It has a very tinny sound that hurts the ears when the volume is cranked. You can play pretty much anything on it but I would never use it in a real show etc.

It's set up well for the price. Don't expect much. There were quite a few flaws in the paint and the volume and selector switch needed to be re-soldered.

I liked learning how to play on this guitar but its not worthy of a live show. Or even jamming with some buddys, this thing doesnt work too well. Its durable but thats about it.

Well, if your beginning and want a solid guitar to play on then go with this one. Its better than the alternatives (yamaha, fender squier etc.) but if I was to do the guitar purchasing thing over again (which i will be soon) I would have coughed up a couple extra hundred bucks and got something better. I probably will never buy "Epiphone" again. But i do like GIBSON SG's! Im giving this guitar an overall rating of 6, but in its price range its worth a 9/10.

2003 epiphone sg special goth. 21 frets on rosewood board, 2 knobs, 3 way switch, two pickups. Black.

Guitar sounds quite good for 130 bucks. Awesome distortiony bluesy type tone, great for rock, and metal. The two pickups are decent but they aren't EMG's by any means. Clean, the sound is sharp, not much sustain to any of it but with a boss cs3 you can fix that right up. Not bad at all.

Ive played a lot of guitars, and the only guitar faster than this thing is a fender american. awesome playability, not to impressive on the paint but o well.

Durable... Not really, wire came loose once and the input jack came out numerous times which from what ive read, is a reoccuring problem with these thing. I finally just soddered it in...

I play the tele for clean channel, Epi SG for dirty, perfect match. If it were lost id be hurt, but lets all face it, fender products are better than Gibson... The truth hurts but even Page started on a tele. Pay the extra for a strat, I wish i did. However, still is a great beginner guitar. Awesome for the price. Wish it had better pickups, I'd recomend some EMG Hz's. all-in-all a 9

The sound is very good for waht i play(GRUNGE AND PUNK-ROCK).
The bridge pickup is a littler bit bass in clean but i love it when the distortion is on
I use a Kustom KGA-30, Boss Ds-2, Electro Harmonix Small Clone Chorus and a Wah pedal and the sound is very good.

The action is good well when i buy it everytime i press in a fret i have some buzz but that is easy to put righ just raising a little bit the Bridge the inton... was ok everything is good. No big prob.

transparent dark red finish, originally 1 vol 1 tone, 3 way switch. two humbuckers...they were ok. action is tight and intonation was set percectly for standard tuning. tuners kind of blow but i play pretty hard usually...

souned ok but needed massive amounts of tweakage to really get the balls out of it. i tend to play some intense shit and it never had balls until i threw in an EMG 81/85 set. now it just has one master volume and a three way pickup switch. redid all the wiring since it had 500k pots and the EMG's came with recommended 25k pots.

action is decent...im not picky about action, as long as its reasonable..im happy

i havent thrown this one yet and i dont think the neck could take it since the bolt on neck doesnt feel as strong as other bolt ons.

this thing is my main fiddle,. since the pickup change this sunna bitch rips.

Made in China 2003 Epiphone SG special. 21 fret maple neck, rosewood fingerboard. I'm not sure what the body wood is, seems substantial though, and is finished in a really nice gloss black, very good job throughout. It has a simple 1 volume, 1 tone, 3 way pickups selector switch layout, that controls 2 passive open coil humbuckers. The bridge is a tune-o-matic with stop tailpiece. Just a basic SG style guitar with simplified electronics.

Sonically, this thing can cover lots of ground, and fits my needs perfectly. I play anything from jazzy lounge type stuff to rock(from soft to heavy, grinding stuff, to noise) and it will do anything i need. This thing is quiet, not really much pickup noise from it at all, even at high volumes, which is always great. The variety of sounds it can make are plentiful, it can go from being dark and bassy to bright and snappy, even with the simplified pickup scheme. It can get muddy, but you can definitely find ways around that. Just tweak your amp, pedals, whatever you use.

The action on mine was pretty good, a tiny bit higher than i like but that was easily adjusted. The pickups were the right height, even and sounded good the way they were. The bridge was fine, i didnt haev to adjust it at all, and the finish was terrific, very nice looking guitar. Not really anything wrong here at all. Sure there are better looking guitars out there, but for the money, this thing looks great.

This guitar is very durable. During any given show i play, it is bound to be thrown around, dropped, slammed into something, etc., and has been numerous times. The thing is, it just keeps going. I have yet to have it give me any problems. I accidentally slammed it face down on the floor during a noise freakout, and the jack got indented into the body a bit, but it was easily fixed and played through the whole performance in that condition. The finish has been holding up quite nicely too, there are only a few dings, and this thing has been subjected to lots of jarring and blows to the body and neck. You can depend on this guitar, and i have used it on a gig without a backup, and i will again. Nice.

Overall, this instrument is a good, solid beginner through intermediate guitar, and would be vital to even an experienced player. You do get what you pay for in most cases, and the simple electronics and hardware reflect that. But the amount of abuse this thing puts up with is staggering, and it is still holding up great. I'd reccomend it as a starter guitar also, it is inexpensive and has a good amount of simple features for a budding guitarist to learn on.

Ive dont have any problems with feedback even with the amp cranked and the gain at ten. the pups are a little too midrangey though. im glad to see epiphone has actually done stuff to make the product better i.e. non-microphonic pickups

The action was a little bit high but that was quickly adjusted. It came in tune out of the box which was good. The pickup selector does suck shit when switching (the bridge pickup will go off until i switch off and back on again but thankfully never when rocking out)on the bridge pickup occasionly though but only when switching pups. also the tuners are better i barely ever have to tune it.

I dont think i would use it without a backup but it is very durable cause i always accidently hit it against the walls and its is never damaged.

it definetly owns my peavey raptor it sound and overall quality.

Read the other reviews for specs on this. I will say it's got a really light body made out of crap wood (glued together maple/alder looks like plywood) and a thin neck, crappy electronics. 1 Volume control, 1 tone control. Simple which I like.

I play electric lullabyes and heavy metal sludge. This guitar rules for some of the songs I play. I put .09 strings on it and I usually keep it tuned down 1.5 steps. With the bridge humbucker, it'll rip you a new one. You can play really really fast and heavy with this because the action is great. I get a decent clean sound with the pick up switch in the middle setting. I've never cared much for the neck pickup setting on this, or with any gibson, when I think cool neck pickup sound, I think fender single coil. The sustain on this SG is awesome. It feels better to play than any SG I've ever tried including gibsons top of the line. If you want a heavy sound, definitely consider this one. However, if you're trying to steal some classic rock musician's sound, get a mahogany bodied SG. I will say that the electronics really blow on this, either my switch or my pickups have cut out from time to time. You might want to switch all electronics to gibson. I recently did because I became annoyed, and I put in a 500t in the bridge and a 496R in the neck. This setup will kick your ass. The stock pickups, aside from being possibly undependable, sound really good for a $100 guitar though.

Action is superior to almost any other Gibson or Epiphone. The finish is not the best, but I like the way it looks, black. It is the most comfortable guitar I've ever played, has an incredible neck. With thin strings tuned down I can bend notes to sick levels and add sick levels of vibrato.

The neck is set really well. The body and neck will never fall apart. However, my output jack broke free, so I had to cover the original hole with electric tape and drill a new one. The electronics cavity was just a little thin i guess, and the wood is like plywood, so it broke. The electronics lick my sweaty balls, I had problems switching pickup settings, don't know if it was the switch or the pickups. I had to re-soldier the wires to the output jack twice. Since I changed to gibson pickups and electronics, these complaints are null.

I've been playing for about 8 years. I own a 50s reissue strat with lace sensors, an Ibanez 7-string RG with EMG-707s, a fernandes Raven Elite, tons of fuzz pedals, a few phasors, a boss metal zone, A peavey duel 212 with ruby tubes and a peavey envoy solid state. This guitar won't ever get lost. If it's stolen, the thief will be killed, and the guitar reclaimed. If the guitar is destroyed, I'll buy another. I love the sound, the fit, the action, and the sustain. It needs to have better, more durable electronics, but for $100 I'm impressed with what it's got.

It was made in China. There's a 3-way switch, a volume knob, and a tone knob. There are two humbuckers. Obviously it has a S.G. body shape.

It suits my music styles great. I play anything from classical to metal. This does a good job for classic rock to metal. I run it into my danelectro talk box (sweet pedal!!!) to my danelectro milkshake chorus, to my danelectro hash browns flanger, to my danelectro PB&J delay, then to my dunlop crybaby 95Q wah pedal.I use either my Marshall MG10CD (this amp rocks!!!) or my Zoom Fire-15 (Sweet!!!). The guitar is not that noisy. It has a rich, full sound. This guitar can make pretty much any sound.

The action is AWESOME!!! The pick-ups sound gret. Everything was set-up great and ready to go. It didn't have any flaws, whatsoever.

This guitar does seem like it will last. The finish does kinda come off from a guitar strap but only on the corners where no one can see them. The strap buttons are very solid. I can depend on it and I would use it at a gig without a back-up. The paint kinda wears easy.

The sound is good for the price paid. Pickups are a little noisy when played. Pretty silent when not. Bottom end is a tad too strong and when playing clean the sound tends to get muddy. On overdrive and distortion, leads sound pretty good. Good for power chords crunch. Sustain is surprisingly good.

Finish is surprisingly good for this price range. Everything looks well made and solid. The body is very light. This guitar will be good for girls coz it will not break their backs.

Action is a tad high and intonation a lil off, but all serious guitarists should adjust their own axes anyway. No significant buzzing. Notes on the highest E string of the highest 2-3 frets were sort of muted.

The guitar looks solid as a tank. It should hold up.

This guitar packs very good value at $150 each. I feels like a guitar in the $200-250 range. Good starter rock guitar. It has that classic look and sounds much better than entry level squires and yamahas. I would recommend it for beginners or players who want a cheap practice guitar to trash around.

I do not own one personally. I would not get a SG special since I have moved beyond the starter guitar stage.

China made SG Special. You guys know the features. 2 Humbuckers, a 3-way switch and 1 volume and 1 tone knob. Stop tailpiece bridge. Basic tuners but effective and strong enough. I give it a 5 in this cat. not because I am unhappy but because as it was designed and as I like it...it simply doesnt have alot of features.

Ok...so I am NO expert and wont claim to be, but im not too bad either. I play in a Indie rock/punk band. I run it through a Marshall AVT50H head and a 2x12 Marshall cab (model 1922). I bought it new and right out of the box it played great, esp. for its appealing price. Right away it sounded halfway descent. The pickups were a little scratchy sounding but not too bad. I even played it through a less expensive Peavey combo and it sounded alright. I have since switched out the bridge pickup w/ a $60.00 Seymour Duncan. It now sounds pretty descent. All scratchiness was eliminated. The main reason I bought this guitar is because of its incredibly thin neck and that right there sells me. I have a Gibson Les Paul Special and a Gibson SG-X (both real Gibsons) and of course they sound better...but the playability I like alot more in the Epi. I played my first show w/ it last week and it did great! My rating is a 6 or 7 with the stock pickups and a 9 with the Seymour.

As I mentioned above (I guess I should read ahead next time) the action is great. Much better than two other Gibsons i own. But thats my opinion. It was set up very nicely. Finish...looks good and havent noticed anything yet, but I dont really care what it looks like as long as it sounds good.

The hardware seems ok...the only thing that really concerns me is the nut being plastic. But for the price what do you want. That is an advantage of a higher priced instrument. But nothing has gone wrong with it yet.

Smooth action neck, well adjusted everything. That's epiphone for you, I guess. No Blems, but fingerprints REALLY show up. But I suppose compared to my previous guitar, a 1964 Strat copy w/humbuckers for some reason that sounded like they were made out of some type of vegetable, almost anything would sound better.

I think this guitar could withstand just about anything. Finish is wonderful, it should last for ever. Strap buttons are great, I would use it on a gig w/o a backup. I'll have it until I die (probably).

I have been playing for most my life, actually (I'm 14 yrs old). I own a peavey amp, danelectro overdrive pedal, and BOSS acoustic simulator pedal. everything compliments the guitar. I compared it to the ibanez gax30, strat and yamaha pacifica. the strat was good but expensive, the pacifica was CRAP- only position's 1 and 5 worked on the switching, and it had horrid sound. the ibanez was alright but I don't really like the brand. I settled on this because I really like the style, playability range and brand go get it because it's a wonderful axe.

unknown year. bolt on neck, 2 hums, one volume, one control. toggle switch. wood unknown?? but doesn't look so bad. this one i acquired , its like new, has block inlays instead of the dots. has 1/2 decent tuners, not great, but not the plasticy new styled ones.

pickups are noisy as hell, with lots of feedback. what to expect from an entry level instrument though? through a good amp, its sounds good. through a cheaper, smaller amp, well, it's pretty bad.

set up is nice, asthetically it's nice looking. the 2 extra controls as the g 400 has are better.

i've had several epiphones before, i've owned gisbons, fenders, etc...this was a throw in on a trade, it's ok, but im not going to play it, it's more for a beginner. epi. guitars have poor toggle switches on them. i'm not sure how this would hold up.

if you are just starting out, its a decent guitar. otherwise, i'd say step up to a g400, which with new electronics etc.. can be a good instrument. i doubt that anyone would up grade this thing.it looks nice, plays ok, but, hell, it's a beginner guitar, that's about it in a nutshell.

mine was made in the late 90s. this guitar would be a better investment if it had a tremelo (i'm not a big fan of fixed bridges). it has really really crapy tuners, if you get this guitar you should would put way smaller machine heads on it, they are incredibly sensitive. works well with very light sting gauges. Has a very small slightly uncomfortable neck.

pick ups are alright for cheap guitar. suits my crazy solos alright(partly due to lighter gauge strings).

machine heads are crap, as i stated before. good to play standing up (due to small SG body). neck is slightly uncomfortable. fingerboard is not bad

its pretty solid other than machine heads and input jack(mine fell off).

i have been playing for around three years and own six guitars. its a good practice guitar or first guitar. But with its lack of tremelo it is not as versatile as other guitars, in my opinion.

2003 model black made in china 22fret bolt on neck don't know what kind of wood don't care tune o matic bridge decent tuners i'll eventully replace decent black plastic nut i'll eventully rerplace rosewood finger board it came with two humbuckers 1 volume 1 tone and 1 selecter switch. i ripped out everything but the volume knob put stickers over the holes and put in a new humbucker in the bridge as soon as i got home so now it's got 1 bridge hb and 1 volume knob before mods it was a 5 now it's 8 because of the nut and tuners after i change them it will be a 10.this is an excelent beginer guitar left alone and makes a great fixer uper for experienced players

i really like the way this guitar sounds AFTER i changed the pickup.stock pickups suck. i put a $35 kent armstrong distortion pickup in the bridge and the result was just the sound i was looking for in your face show no mercy punk fucking rock.this guitar is now awesome the louder the beter. it even sounds good through shitty amps.this is the best guitar/pickup marrige for the money on the planet i highly recomend it for any one who can't throw down $1200 for a gibson.before pikup change 3 after 11.stock epiphone pickups suck.

It suits metal.. The humbuckers are standard epi's which, as you probably know aren't good. at all.

Nevertheless its a good sound for a beginner.

I would not suggest this guitar if you are planning to play without distortion. It won't sound good, trust me.

The switch that changes the humbuckers seems to be erratic - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. I've cleaned the thing out a thousand times but it still happens.

The biggest problem with the guitar is the wood. It is a very cheap wood. I think its plywood, because I can see the ply layers through the laminate. For this reason, you wouldn't bother upgrading the humbuckers at a later time because it won't make much difference to the tone.

It's build like a rock, thats for sure. Apart from the switch. I would not use it at a gig at all because the sound is too... blurara

It's a great guitar for a beginner. When you get it, it'll look like the most beautiful thing on the planet, and the distortion will sound great. But once you develop more of an ear you'll want to get a better guitar.

Just don't be fooled by the epiphone site, saying its 'laminate maple/alder'. This does not mean it is a solid maple or alder body that you'd get on many more expensive guitars. (Infact, if you like the SG shape, you'd be better off buying the Epiphone SG 400(??), the higher range epiphone guitars are made of mahogany and actually sound really good when you install custom humbuckers in them).

Everyone already knows the features- simple, to the point, and straightforward. But what do you expect for less than $200?

I play full-bore rock with some punk and garage sensibilities, and this guitar is SO perfect for this! The low end is really meaty without knocing out the treble, and it really sounds great distorted! (To the folks who say that you can play heavy distortion on anything, I say bullshit!) This guitar is all big fuzzy crashing fun. It's not meant to be a technical guitar, but if you want to get a solid rock and roll rumble brewing, this is the one!

The action and finish were fine. The color (red ) couldn't be more perfect for me. This guitar looks and feels great.

Well, the hardware is a bit cheap, but the guitar seems like it will do just fine live. The strap is LOCKED on, so no worries there. I'd gig with this guitar happily, but I'd be careful about the bolted neck, which does look a little sketchy.

I quit playing guitar when my 78 Les Paul Standard was stolen about seven years ago, and this is my first electric since. I think I like the feel and sound of this guitar just as well, if not BETTER than my real live Gibson guitar. With a slightly better hardware, and without the pesky tuning problem, I'd rate this as one of the best guitars I've played. It's perfect for the kind of music I play.

2002 Epi SG Special Pro-line series. I think it's the cheaper of the gothic version because there are no cool inlays or anything like that. It does have the black satin finish (which scrapes off very easily), a cheap graphite-esque nut, 2 epi humbuckers, mahogany with a bolt-on, Chinese made, This guitar is very basic and the features are very cheap. BEWARE OF THE NUT, IT WILL SNAP LIKE A TWIG!

This was a noisy piece of shit. The 3 way switch buzzed to no end, and the pickups were also very noisy. I was running this through a Crate GFX1200 head with a 4x12 cab and it made the muddiest clean sounds. I gave it to my girlfriend to learn on and she even hated the sound of it.

The satin finish was nice to look at but it scratched off easily. The hardware looked very cheap, and the nut was shit. Everything looked spray painted in black and the guitar made lots of creaky unoiled sounds when you turned the tuners even slightly. It was obviously a poor cut of wood.

As far as action was concerned, the guitar buzzed alot on the lowest frets. The intunation was fair when you could get through the mud to hear it. I'm giving this category a 5 because the satin finish was nice looking, but that's the only reason.

I'd never play this without a backup. It would shatter like glass if you dropped it, and I don't think it's mahogany. I think it's particle board or plywood. Cheap hardware, cheap wood, cheap finish, cheap everything.

I've been playing for 7 years and I bought this so I could have a backup and my girlfriend could learn on it. This guitar is not worthy of being my coffee table let alone an instrument I would ever play. If you want something cheap and decent, try a Mexican Tele, an Epiphone SG-400, or even an Ibanez Talman. Save this piece for the trash compactor.

2001, Basic low end features, 1 tone, 1 vol, 3-way toggle switch, no pick guard, but what do you expect on a low end guitar?

It's great, I mainly use it to play Sabbath or other down tuned stuff (all the way down to C or C#). I play her with heavy distortion through a Korg PX3, sounds good with wah/distorion too, about average clean, maybe a little lower than average, don't think the pickups like the down tuning clean so much :| but in standard tuning it's more solid.

It's got realativly high action, but that's GOOD for what I want... yea, that's right... because I don't play with a pick, and it's down tuned, so a TON of string vibration, anything less and it would be getting a lot of fret buzz, I had to adjust the truss rod a little, nothing major even a noob could fix it...

Never had a problem with her, I think I got lucky with the toggle switch, I've heard those can have problems. Never dropped or banged it at all, so I can't really say.

Great first guitar, never had any problems with her, good value for the money, but not as much so as the Epiphone G-400, get that if you have the cash, it's well worth it, but if you can't afford much, this is a really good starter guitar, and you can always save and upgrade later, and then you'll have this as backup or for an alternative tuning.

There aren't a lot of features on this guitar. I think i really just bought it for the purpose of having something simple. It's just a tone, a volume, two pickups and a pickup switcher thingy. There's no pickguard, but what good are they anyway? And no, you can't put a whammy bar on it, but they're overrated.

I think it sounds good. In my Jam Session class, we had to play this song called "Watermelon Man" and I think I was able to get a very early sixties sound out of it. And when I played "Helter Skelter" with it, it sounded awesome! Aside from that, I don't know how much variety it has, but as long as I can play what I bought it for (metal and psychadellic stuff) it's cool.

I guess this is all good. The only real flaw was that there were fingerprints all over it.

This seems to have endured plenty so far. The only major thing was when the, mind you I'm not very technical, part you put the wire into broke. Aside from that, it was fine.

I haven't delt with Epiphone, but the guy I bought it from gave me a free strap and some picks with it, so I'll give it a ten based on that. Don't go by this, though.

This is a factory refurb second SG Special, Made in 2002, I think in China. This is pretty close to your typical SG, 24 3/4" scale, 2 passive uncovered humbucking pickups, double cutatway in the traditional SG shape, Tuneomatic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, etc. Has 3-piece mahogany neck (epiphone advertises it has maple, but this one is mahogany) rosewood fretboard with dot inlays, and elcheapo tuners. Has some kind of tight-grained body that looks like a low-grade mahogany, I assume plywood (Epi advertises maple/alder, but it's neither), nice shiny finish. Weighs probably 5 pounds less than a "real" Gibson SG slab of solid mahogany. Has one volume and one tone control, as opposed to the traditional SG two of each, and the standard three position "rythym/treble" switch. No pickguard. Came with a cable. I rated 8 for features, what in the hell can you expect for $120.00. This guitar lists for $299 US, but surely no one pays list for a guitar nowadays. Would be a nice guitar at that price, though.

I play mostly blues, and a little of everything else, through a Silverface Fender Bassman 50, and various solid state stuff. Pretty much only use a tube preamp for effects. This guitar, in the neck and "both" pickup settings, fits what I play perfectly. It is extremely quiet, but I expect that from humbucking pickups, even cheap ones. When I bought this guitar, I fully expected to replace the pickups, but was pleasantly surprised at how good the neck pickup sounds. Nice, full bodied, what you'd expect from a decent hb neck pickup. Sounds good on "both" setting, too. Bridge pickup is pretty worthless, though for what I play, I don't use them very often anyway. It will be replaced. There is a definite difference in the three pickup settings, and a variety of different sounds is possible, something that doesn't usually happen with cheap guitars. Pots are very quiet, at least at this time. I give it a "9", it really sounded better than I would expect for the price.

I had planned to have this guitar set up by a tech, but came out of the box ready to play. Action was exactly where I like it on a 24 3/4 scale guitar, low, but high enough to not get fret buzz on higher frets. Intonation was perfect. Came with some cheap strings that were immediately replaced by Dean Markleys. Finish is much better than I would have expected on a cheap guitar, its a pretty deep red color (are SG's any other?) only flaw is the paint is hazy on the headstock where the brand name is, I would suppose they messed it up when they stamped the head with "2nd". Everything tight, no glue around the frets or inlays. Finish is much better than I would expect on a cheap guitar.

I don't play live anymore, but would have no problem doing so with this guitar, seems well built. Have been playing this guitar for a couple of months with no problems. Finish seems durable, time will tell. Bridge and tailpiece seems kind of flimsy, as compared to a real Gibson, but.... Strap buttons seem solid, but I seldom use them. Has elcheapo Asian tuners that will be replaced. Have always hated where neck strap button is located on an SG, right behind the neck, not only is it in the way when playing on upper frets, but they tend to fail, but no other logical place to put it. I would depend on this guitar, I suppose, but anyone would be crazy to depend on any guitar at a gig without some kind of backup.

Has a limited lifetime warranty, whatever that means. Hope not to have to deal with the company.

I've been playing for about 25 years, and have owned various Gibson and Fender products, and have a Tele and Strat now. If it were stolen, I'd hunt the sucker down and make him sorry, but probably would replace it with a prettier model of Epiphone, either SG or Les Paul. (I wouldn't imagine they would be better than this guitar, just more features electronically and cosmetically, i.e. dual tone and volume controls, covered pickups, bar inlays, etc.) I like the sound, though wish the bridge pickup sounded better(though didn't really expect more). I wish it had other than dot inlays (but could have paid more and bought a guitar with them), wish the tuners were better quality (but didn't expect more for the price), wish it had a bone nut (ditto). Overall, a very nice guitar for under 400 bucks.

Made in 2002, in an emerging Asian nation (Korea's my guess). 24 frets I think, solid as a rock Alder, simple tone/vol/3 way switching, dual open-coil hums, who knows who made them. This SG Special has the dark red finish, double-cutaway with the tuna-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece. El cheapo tuners and standard neck. This was part of a Gig Pack, which came with spaghetti-wire-gauge cables, a nifty little 10W amp, strap, picks, a video, a third-round draft pick and a player to be named later. Just kidding. If you're just getting into playing an electric, you have the right guitar right here.

My music style is pretty much Beatles/Seven Nations/John Lennon/George Harrison and all over the map from grunge to ballads. I like a lot of diverse music. I've used this guitar with the Epi Studio 10 amp and also with a really crummy Dean Markley 50w that has seen better days. The sound is teriffic. Plenty of punch and volume, quiet electronics (hums do indeed keep quiet on this thing). Lots of sustain, great for blasting or quiet playing. Of course, it isn't for playing unplugged. SG's aren't noted for acoustic tone.

Setup... well, it was my first electric and still is. I didn't know setup from Shinola, and while I'm still not sure about the latter, I do know the former now. The setup was at best ok, strings were super-ultra-can-you-see-these-things? lights from the factory. I managed to snap the high E within minutes of opening the box. It wasn't in tune but I hardly expected that after being shipped and in and out of different temps. Pickups were a bit low, the action slightly high, required a lot of effort for barre chords and such. I use D'Addario XLs and when I moved up to 10s, the action was a major issue. What didn't help was also removing ALL the strings when restringing the first time (rookie mistake) and screwing up the tune-o-matic bridge height (accidentally spun the height adjusters). End result was with 10s, it would regularly snap G and D strings at the bridge. After a pro setup (adjusted pickups, lowered action and adjusted the intonation), it is FAR better. Also seemed to stop the problems with this unit going out of tune (tuner machine heads weren't tightened on the head, only snugged). The finish, by the way, is beautiful. Everything fits and looks great.

This guitar would survive a mosh pit, a stage attack, an intruder in the house and a shove thru the amp and still come out swinging. It's as solid as a baseball bat. A tad heavy. This model does not have a pickguard, and I'm no animal with my guitar, so that's not an issue but if you're rough on equipment, you might want to look for something to keep the top looking good. It's dependable and the strap buttons seem fine, no loosening. It's been gigged with several times and keeps on kicking. Now serves as a backup for my stepson's band (we got him a Casino for Christmas). Gigging without a backup isn't smart under any circumstances. Ya never know...

haven't had to work with Epiphone, but they do have a pretty good website and it's backed by Gibson. I got this from Musician's Friend, and they've been splendid every time I order from them.

I've been serious about playing now for about 9 months, so I'm still wet behind the ears. Also own a Yamaha FG-410 acoustic, which everyone loves (that guitar gets NO rest). If stolen or lost I'd probably buy it again, it's worth the money for a beginner. Of course, if that happens about 5 years from now, I doubt I'd get the same thing... I'd be more inclined to get either a hollow body, or possibly a Schecter or PRS.

This guitar sounds pretty decent. I run it through a fender bassman amp though.. so the amp could be responsible for my favorable impression. Go try it yourself. I'm eventually going to get my fender texas special out of layaway and this ones going under the knife. I'm going to beef it up with some nice pick-ups... maybe prs dragoon 2's

Guitar was set up very nicely. No problems there. I gave it a 9 because if you select ten on this site.. it automatically says the fabulous.. I hate that word.

I've been playing for a year. I have a guild d-30 acoustic as well. That's my favorite possession. If this guitar were stolen, I'd probably get something else just because I like to try new things.

EPIPHONE SG SPECIAL
Red finish, SG alder/maple body, bolt-on maple neck with rosewood fretboard and dot inlays, chrome hardware, two open humbucking pickups, volume, tone, 3-way toggle, and a stoptail piece. Made in China.

I was very impressed with the sound of the guitar. It has a fat, rich tone in all of the settings and sounds good clean and distorted. I play it primarily through a Fender silverface Twin and I get a great 60's garagy sound from it. Guitar was intonated well from the factory and has no fret buzz.
The pickups are great for what was paid for the guitar and in my opinion, better than Epi's higher ranged model humbuckers, because of their fullness and higher output level. We're not talking P.A.F.s, as their not as shimmering and don't bring out as many complexities, but, as I said exceptional for the money.

The action is great. This is a great player for those who want the SG shape and sound but don't want to shell out the bucks or worry about the guitar getting stolen, although if it were I'd probably buy a new one. The finish is pretty good, but a little flawed here and there.

This model seems very durable and solid. This is a tried and true design, which was the main reason that I bought it. I'm not too concerned with how the cosmetics will hold up, but I think it will age fine.

I'm not sure what's covered in the warranty, but I'm not too worried about anything going wrong.

I've been playing for around 20 years, have several other "value" line guitars as well as vintage ones. I have been impressed with Gibson's and Fender's value lines. I primarily play surf and garage so these models suit me just fine. I would recommend the Epiphone SG to anyone looking for great sound and playability for a great price. Note: my ratings are RELATIVE to instruments of the same price point level not to a reissue '61 or something.

My Epiphone SG Special is a 2001 model made in China. You all know what the features are so I'll skip that.

This is not a versatile guitar. It is great for heavily distorted music like punk and metal. I bought it to play punk music with and it works alright for that, but what doesn't? I go back and forth in my opinion of the sound. The pickups are loud and like most people have said here, pretty cold and soulless. I've heard lots of guitars with better tone in the same price range that these sell for. One big plus is that the tone knob provides enough versatility to set up the sound differently enough to play lead. While on the topic, notes above the twelfth fret sound pretty dead on my SG. It's not a good guitar for screaming leads.

The factory set everything up pretty well. I haven't changed anything. I'm about to adjust the bridge to try and get the action down a little bit. Usually I don't notice it, but it is a little high and on some lines that matters.

I lent this to a friend of mine to play live and that's the only time it's ever been on a gig. Like many Epiphones, this guitar will not stay in tune unless you just installed new strings. (I change the strings once a month, and it only stays somewhat in tune during the first week). The finish and hardware are all pretty good. Someone else mentioned their stop piece was crooked and mine is too.

I can do A.H. as easy as i did uin my friends Jackson Soloist ( i wonder why huh?), its FUCKIN noisy, sometimes i got to turn the amp volume all the way down just to stop that, i Plug it direcly in my amp a Meteoro Vulcano, made in brazil. FOr the sound i Like , metel, it's time to change the guitar...

When i got it i didnt even know what acion was so... who knows how it came..i've not even touched the pickup... i prefer not to mess it up.. the octaves are hard to adjust, this fucking guitar never stay tunned, man, i was thinking about changing the hardware an pickups.. but then.. is cheaper to buy another guitar..the switch siometime have a bad contact and the brigde pickup get "thiner" nad have no distortion, i have to flic the switch somethmes until it come bvack to nomal.. and i had a har time making this guitar stop buzzing..

Live playing its ok, but it wont stay tunned... the hardware wears off too easy, the strap keep falling all the time.. i have no option on depending on it...

I dabble in everything from jazz to hard rock to blues to progressive, and this guitar covers every base admirably.I still only have a little Peavey Rage 10 watt amp (living room rocker, I am). It handles a huge variety of tones beautifully.Both pickups have great tone, and sound great in clean or dirty modes.They are very quiet pickups, no hum or buzz or crackling. I found it to be very loud acoustically, with a big rich chord voice.Really good for faking a big jazz guitar.That sticky goo that the pickup cover plastic leaves comes off with a little alcohol. I would have liked to have chrome pickup covers on it. I bought some genuine Epiphone ones, but the holes didn't line up :(. I turfed the rhythm/treble thing under the pickup switch, and swapped the black control knobs for some gold top-hats, and the black pickup rings for some ivory ones. Much better. Maybe one day it will get a tortoise pickguard. Very nice light little guiter.Nice meaty neck, very comfortable. I like it much better than my $2000 Signature Aurora.

I always tend to mess with the action myself, but it was very good when I got it.I haven't seen any flaws in the wood or the finish. It has a very fine grain, not too figured, but pretty. It is a nice shade of red, but could be a little darker for my taste, a little more wine colored. The fretting job was excellent, but after a bit of playing could use a tiny bit of filing on the ends to smooth out little sharpies.The control cavity is well done, and shielded.The back cover is well fitted, but a little too tight to get out, with the close fit. They could have done the scarfing a bit more on the edges. The only real obvious flaws in the manufacturing is that the lower strab knob is off center, towards the knobs, and the tailpiece is on crooked. Neither affects playability, and has to be pointed out to be noticed. The nut is well cut, and placed.The volume,tone and pickup are smooth and noiseless. The volume and tone knobs do a nice job of shaping the sound. Fret markers are well done, but on the side the pair at the 12th fret are slightly crooked to each other. The filler on the edges of the fingerboard where the frets were inserted is all but invisible. Ebonized rosewood fingerboard is well done. Nice and dark, even color. I compared $510 Epi g-400's to $1800 Gibson SG's, and the only difference I saw (besides $1290, the headstock corner notches, and the decal), was the poor job done putting the trapezoid markers in the Gibson, compared to the Epi. I don't expect to see that much wood filler at that price range.

I think, as in all guitars, if this is taken care of, it will be a long lasting guitar. I don't see any reason to swap out the pickups, unless you're a tone junkie. The tuners are half-round chromies, not the plastic ones. I had gathered that tuners were the weak point of these guitars, but mine keeps in tune just fine. I disassembled mine and put a dab of grease on the gears, to make things happier, but I don't see a need to change them , except for vanity. The ivory Gibson style do look better in my opinion.But, that's just fashion. The finish was very well applied, I think it will stand up very well. It is glossy, but the neck is slick and fast, not sticky. The strap buttons are solid, but I may swap them for locking in the future, just because i'm used to that. I wouldn't personally gig without a backup, because you never know when a string may break, but I feel that this guitar can be trusted to perform.

Never dealt with them, but I gather that they are good to deal with.

I've been dabbling on and off for 10+ years. I have owned 9 other guitars, including currently a Signature Aurora, and this is one of the best that I have ever owned.Right up there with the excellent Les Paul copy, and '72 telecaster that I traded away. Siggggggghhhh.If this were lost or stolen, i would replace it, or maybe step up to the G-400 set neck. Real sg's are cool, but the price difference is ridiculous.These are fabulous guitars, and a steal at this price. I love that it does exactly what i want it to do; look cool, play well, sound good and not break the bank. Originally I wanted a black one that was fitted with a white pearl dog-ear pickguard. But it got sold, and I grabbed this one instead. Just a great looking, versatile, rockin' little axe. Do yourself a favor and check them out. I think you'll be very surprised.

This is my 2nd guitar(my 1st being a Yamaha EG 112) and I've been playing since December 2000. I play a (extremely crappy) little Rogue 30 Watt w/ a 10" speaker, but its all I can afford (Im only 13 ya know, so lay off!). I play anything from grunge and pshychedelic (Nirvana and Pink Floyd) to classic rock (Zeppelin & AC/DC) and heavy metal (Ozzy and Tool). I will be using this guitar for heavy metal and classic rock style music, and I have to say that I am not satisfied with these "stock" humbuckers. I guess they put out some pretty good distortion, but they got no soul. You can get some good warm bass tones out of the bridge hummer, but its just not what I'm looking for. I'm saving up to replace them with a Duncan SH4 JB on the bridge and a Duncan SH2 Jazz Model on the neck. It sounds good, but not GREAT.

I havent had any problems whatsoever. Good, sturdy axe. There are a few minor problems, like the sticky paint on the back of the neck, and the stupid little knob on the pickup selector busted(grr), but nothing major. Pickups were just fine. It scratches pretty easily, but what are you gonna do.

I think this will withstand live playing. The strap buttons are great, the strap hasnt fallen off one time yet. The paint isnt the greatest, I don't expect much from it, but I can depend on this guitar. I've only played live once and had no problems, but I'm not going to play live without a backup ONLY because I'm afraid of breaking a string :)

Once I get those Duncan hummers & maybe a BOSS Metal Zone pedal (drool) this axe will shred like there's no tomorrow. If it was stolen, I'd probably buy a little bit better model (G-400) , but overall I'm really enjoying this guitar. I highly suggest it (if you are looking for something inexpensive OR are willing to replace the pickups. This axe is a real monster. Rock on.

I did change the machine heads, scratched the sticky paint off the neck, and refinished it with tung oil. Changed the pickups, now it is

DiMarzio X2n on bridge
DiMarzio MegaDrive on neck (it is a high output bridge pu, yet goes very very good with X2n which happens to be the most powerful (output wise) PU on the planet earth.
both ceramics, so did not expect to perform very good in clean (for that you ought to go for alnico II magnets)

This guitar is now sounding very very good, not kidding. The wood and is what makes it good + the pu's obviously. Did lots of modifications though, one that I did not mention (because I did not do it at the time) is that I did change the vol pot to 500K decent ones.

CAn get the tones (not exactly though fairly close) on the back in black. but that's it, pretty good with semi and high gain, but not good at all (in comparison to my 95 gibson les paul standard with seymour antiquities) in clean.

I don't want to imply that a modified EPi SG will be able to give the holy grail tones that we hear on CDs, yet it is very good to play high gain hard rock (ACDC or some sngs like beer drinkers and hell razers from ZZTOP, not all though), and not care about if somebody were to spill some beer on it, or crack the finish and things of this sort. when something happens top my dear LP I do get disturbed!

it was made 96 i think in korea it'is 21 frets it is a laminated top whit one volume and one tone a 3 way selector two humbuckers i think its the standard pickups acktive eldektronics the body is of alder and the neck is of maple with rosewood fretboard the finish is nice black the body style is sg the bridge is stop tilpiece and the tuners i dont know the neck is wery easy to play on i think the frets are thin

i play punkrock and van halen style it fits my style perfekt i am using a old roland cube 60 and a dod 250 overdrive and ibanez cs9 delay it is not so noisy all sorts of sounds i can play any kind of musik on it i like the sound of the humbuckers but it is not so easy to slide

it loles nice the only thing i have to do was to screw a screw a bit harder the pickups were perfrkt not anything wrong there were som paint that were rubbed of on the head

i think it will stand live playing not all my life but like ten years more the finish is not so good i think i will wear it off

damn thing is beginning to fall apart on me, the volume knob is falling off( I've fixed it twice already at band practices) finish is scratching kinda easily now.

still sounds good, except the pickups get a lot of feedback when playing at at a "hear yourself over the drums" level.

still a good inexspensive axe. if you're in need of a good first guitar, and you don't want a p.o.s. strat, get this.

when I bought it from a local music store, I thought it was just one
of those "discount" models that was good for just starting out, but I found it quite nice. It's in ebony (black)with chrome hardware standard sg styling (without pickguard though) it has the standard gibson or epi. tune-o-matic bridge and stop bar tail peice. the neck is smooth, had to get the action lowered. tuners are good quality.

I play a variety of metal and this thing has incredible sound for such an inexpensive guitar. It has dual "epi" open coil humbuckers with a three way selection switch. I currently use it on a fender 25 watt pratice amp and a line6 100w. this thing sounds amazing through a good distortion pedal ( I own a dod fx 86 death metal) sure it's not up there with a prs or a gibson but it's the best sound for under $300!

like I mentioned before, I got the action lowered, but other than that, everything from the fret board to the setting of the pickups was great!

this is a very solid guitar. the finish stays, it's not easy to scratch, it would stand up quite well while on a gig,(but I always bring a back-up simply for broken strings)

haven't had to deal with them because this is one well made axe!

overall I loved this guitar, if this got stolen, and I was on a tight budget, than sure i'd get a new one. but if I had some actual money,
I have my eyes on a B.C. Rich or a les paul of some sort.
I compared this with a yamaha pacifica, and it blew it away!
I love the smooth body and curves, but the ebony finish gets really
dirty easily! (fingerprints and such) I love this thing so much, i'm gonna put some good emgs in it and use it as a backup!

SG Special 90, made in Korea (this model also made in China). Red plywood body (also available in black or purple, maybe other colors, too), semi-transparent finish. Volume knob, tone knob, 3-way pickup switch. No pick guard. Body is pretty light in weight, so the neck hangs down when you let go of it.

By twiddling the controls on the guitar and my amp (Peavey Blazer 158 practice amp), I can get a pretty good variety of rock sounds -- from clean & bright to some fairly heavy distortion. Only major complaint is that the guitar tends to de-tune rather quickly, but whaddya want for 100 bucks?

I looked at several of these in the showroom before I found one that didn't have noticeable blemishes on the body. Imperfections in the finish can be seen in the one I bought at certain angles. Love the action; most other makes I tried in the price range (Brownsville, Squier, etc.) were a bit soft for my taste. Little bit of fret buzz on the A string was easily adjusted away.

Again, tends to go out of tune quickly. The nut for the cable plug fell off once while I was playing. Other than that, the hardware seems solid for the price.

For the price I paid (I got it on sale; looks like it's normally retailing for around $190 these days), this is a decent guitar to learn on, which is what I'm doing with it. I liked it better than the other sub-$150 guitars I looked at. Not something I want to keep forever, though. If this hadn't been on sale, I probably would've gone into the $200 range and bought a Hohner Birmingham or Ibanez GAX70.

this is a good guitar for 80 bucks. It is surprising that it is made out of mahogany body and neck, and that is why I bought it. But I made a bunch of serious modifications:

pickups, I replaced the stock (does not sound good at all if your ear is accustomed to decent ones)

neck now is (american stock) fender strat bridge (it is not a mistake, just experimenting), looks cool, fitting it to the humbucker spot, really shines.
bridge now is neck model of dimarzio paf pro plus (it is not manufactured any more, I bought it in 1992, has a rail on one coil, and screw heads (not the screws) on the other. I wired it in full HB in postion 1, and single in position 2 (as the neck being single).

The tuners were so bad, I use 0.10-0.52 strings and as you can imagine, any serious bend must be followed by retuning. So I changed them to some ting MARS sells, universal something, 20 dollars, but is worth the money and the time for installation.

I hated the paint on the back of the neck, it is not a finish it is a damned sticky paint. Therefore, I went to homedepot and got one of these 3m paint removers. and scratched the paint off. It is still black but that shiny gloss and stickyness is gone, now it is much better looking as well.

then I did the setup that was not done at all. the action was almost 1cm high. the setup is a kind of difficult as you have to adjust the neck and the hight of this stop tune o'matic bridge.

the body and neck wood is great, the funny thing is for 500 people buy mexican POPLAR strats. Come'on!!! poplar is the worst wood ever, it grows so fast that it does not have any dense structure at all. And a strat needs a dense structure (like maple or ash) because it is supposed to be trebly. whatever, so in comparison to many things, SG (only because of the wood and nice work on the neck) is a must buy...
The neck is great, frets and everything.

after these modifications, that I am talking above, the sound is really very good. To be honest I first tried my dimarzio X2n (fresh out of my gibson Les paul, installing it on a LP was a mistake to start with) on the bridge. It was too conventional, very harsh and powerful overdriven sound. No clear tones... (if you are interested read my review for X2n)

in position 1 paf pro is working dual coil, i.e. humbucking. It s simply great, a dark tone, out of the bridge position. Something like early santana sound, but comming from the bridge. It is quite an interesting tone. very nice i'd say and is usable in overdriven and clean tones. it is definitely jazzy is not good for country at all.
position 3: The neck is my all time favorite, a strat neck. but the catch is that it is a strat bridge pu on neck. So the output is higher, a little more crunchy, but very nice. very good both overdriven and clean.
position 2 is where both ofthem work single coil. a dark chicky chicky as rio grande people could call. a tele mid position type of sound, dark and full of twang, sounded like an add. whatever...

my setup is guitar-->mesa boogie vtwin-->ronald GP16-->fender deville or blues junior (depending on where I am, home or a place where I can make lots of noise)

now the guitar is the prince of darkness with attitude (because of single coil!!!) I did not know any dark sounding guitar with single coils, but it's great. I have 2 strats 1 tele, so getting a dark sound is actually something new to me, and it's cool. It is a full sound with lots of harmonics and bdy.

why do the apply this shiny gloss to the neck, man it is so sticky. Just get it off, suddenly you will start to fly. change the tuners...

yesterday i showed the guitar to the tech in mars, here. he was so surprised to hear such things from an unexpected instrument.

the guitar does not look fancy or anything, half of the neck hmbucking pocket is empty, and the other half is full with a white strat single coil pickup. the paint on the neck is removed and it is finished with tung oil (long live home depot), (actually i think now it looks better)

nonetheless, this is not the best guitar i own, but, it has a unique sound and place.

I am giving a 9 to my rating to the condition of the guitar after the modifications.

Guessing 2001 model. Laminated body, bolt on neck, two open coil humbuckers, one volume, one tone,.............blah blah blah. You know what it is!!! It is a poor mans SG. Came with a cord, allen wrench, plastic bag and a box!!!!!!!!!!!!WOW Was very low priced for a SG-ish guitar, so I thought what the hell!!! Don't need extra nobs or features for a beater. Just want it to produce a signal to my amp. Does a damn good job at that.

For what I play which is a little bit of everything only heavy and harder(Rock,Punk and Blues)this guitar does pretty good. It has a very full midrange and bass influenced sound. Very ballsy sounding. Harmonics are good. My set up for this guitar are: guitar-Ibanez multi effects board(Comp.,Dist.,Delay., and Chorus)-Vox Cambridge 30 Twin and a Vox Pathfinder(not ran in stereo just parallel. With any amount of overdrive this baby gets it and gets it good. Not a great deal of sustain but ok.(remember it is a bolt on) The tone doesn't change very dramatically when you switch pickups with the switch. I actually find myself using both pickups while playing most of the time which is odd since seeing how I usually use the bridge pickup on my other guitars. As for the guitar on a clean setting it is very punchy but that can be corrected with the volume and tone controls, which by the way are very smooth and quiet.

The overall set up was decent right out of the box. The action wasn't perfect but close enough, intonation seems to be on the mark. No visible flaws on the body neck or finish the guy who inspected this one must have been having a good day everything appears to be in order. I ordered the olive green finish thinking that I might repaint the guitar and do some modifications to it. However the olive finish is actually very appealing so I doubt if I change the color. (The olive green was 50 dollars less than the black and the cherry)

I've only had this guitar for 2 weeks now and have been playing the hell out of it. It has held up well and seems to be very solid for $120.00 I could buy another one if I busted the neck or something. The tuners are your cheapo economy asian tuners. They most likely will be changed sometime down the road. Rest of the hardware your basic economy stuff too. But I shouldn't really have any problems with those. In conclusion yeah I feel I can depend on this SG. If the situation ever occured I would use this guitar without a backup. Just goto change the tuners first.

It has a warranty. Epiphone also has a website which can be useful. I have never dealt with them yet and right now I don't forsee any reason to worry about it.

I have been playing for 16 years and have owned and currently own all kinds of guitars and gear. I really like SG's and Les Pauls which is why I bought this one. I will keep this one at my lake house so I don't have to drag all my other gear around all the time.
The only disappointing thing that I noticed on this guitar is that since it has a bolt on neck it sets further into the body of the guitar.(compared to my set neck Gibson SG's)Which means it is shorter and feels a little bit different than what I thought it would. Also since it is this way the bridge and stop bar sets further back on the body. This brings me to believe it was cheaper for Epiphone to set the bridge back further but not economical for them to change the routing program on their routing machine since the pickups are still in the same spot they would be for a set neck SG. I know this is confussing but compare the two you'll see what I mean, but hey for 120 bucks who cares!!!! Anyway the bottom line is this, punchy, beefy tone, good comfortable body, fast neck,ok to good hardware, good name, great looks, good overall sound, great warranty and one heck of a good price!!! If it were lost or stolen I would definatly get another one. This is a real good guitar! Not a real SG but dollar for dollar I think this is the best you can get!!!!

I'm heavily into punk music, mostly The Clash etc. and this guitar really does it for me. It's got a nice rich, punchy sound to it that makes it sound good...for me anyway. I use a Marshall Amp and a Fender and it really sounds pretty good. I have no complaints.

This guitar was pretty much good to go out of the box. I did change the strings to Fender Super Bullets (Thats what I use) and that's the only adjustment I've made. The neck had a tiny nic in it...but then again I really couldnt care less.

I've played this guitar live for a handful of shows and it held up nicely. I dropped it on the ground once pretty hard and there wasn't even a mark on it. The finish seems pretty solid but that really doesnt concern me as long as the sound stays good. Right now I use this as a main guitar with an old Epiphone Strat and a Yamaha Pacifica as my backups.

I only dealt with Epiphone once and they were very helpful. A pickup on my Epiphone Strat was really starting to suck so I called them and told them what was up. They paid for the shipping, both back and forth and put in 3, yes three brand new pickups for nothing even though only 1 was retarded. Even after the warranty expired. So I think they are very helpful.

I've been playing for 3 years and this is my 6th guitar. I have this, a Yamaha Pacifica, Epiphone Strat, Fender Jaguar (remake), Fender Tele and a Hamer Standard. The last 3 are rarely used because they're older and worth more than myself. If this guitar was stolen I'd go and buy another one ASAP. For a guitar under $200, its very good. Probably the best money can buy.

This is your basic SG copy with the bare essentials needed to get signal out of the amp (One Volume/One Tone/Three-Way Pickup Selector/Two Humbuckers/Rosewood Neck/Tune-O-Matic Bridge). Now that you know what it has, let me tell you that is all that this guitar needs. These basic features will be more than enough to satisfy a true guitar player.

For a pair of factory humbuckers they really growl. I tested it in the shop with a Gibson of the same model and the volume and depth of the SG Special held its own. I wouldn't change the pickups unless I needed to.

Nice, quick action that didn't need to be adjusted at all. A few nick in the finish, but I can't tell if that was the stores fault or Epiphones. Aside from that, it's an SG. By far one of the coolest, most comfortable bodies ever made.

The hardware is standard Gibson/Epiphone hardware. It seems durable and I haven't had any problems. I have been switching back and forth with this one and I give it my full confidence. As far as durability, like anything, if taken care of, it will produce and perform.

Epiphone has given me no problems with warranty issues in the past and they have a good relationship with the retailer who sold it to me.

I was pleasantly surprised with what I got for $139. Out of all of the stuff that I've heard slung at this guitar by tech players who are more concerned with "their" setup and how they "wouldn't recommend this guitar as firewood" it's nice to see an inexpensive dependable guitar for under two-hundred bucks. No regrets, Epiphone has come through.

In a word, CRAP. No tone, the pups are "hot" but no soul to them. The electronics are crap too. The body is made from plywood...what do you expect? I suppose if you were just starting out and playing through a cheap-o combo amp maybe you would not think there was anything wrong with the sound.. but trust me, if you have any kind of ear...you'll hear CRAP!

Set-up??? No way anyone at the factory is doing any kind of setup. I do all my own setups cause I'm the only one that knows what I want to feel in my guitar. The intonation was out on 3 of the 6 strings, the truss rod needed adjustment, I had to set the action higher than I wanted to keep some of the frets from buzzing. The nut looked like plastic and I bet it doesn't last for long, the frets were rough and... oh hell I could go on and on...

Fisrt of all let me tell you that I didn't keep this guitar very long, I could tell it was beyond cheap (I only bought it because it looked good in the picture and I always wanted an SG... I must of had brain fade that day worse than usual) I unlodaded it quick. I wouldn't have taken it out out the house.

I've been playing for +20 years, owned numerious guitars (currently: 81 Gibson LP Custom, 88 Fender Strat, 99 Fender Tele, 88 Kramer Strat Copy, 89 Gibson SG Special, 75 Gibson L6-S, Fender Acoustic DC-23) and play from blues, 60's, some 80's metal, Classic rock. Play through 76 Marshall JMP or Fender BandMaster. Take my advice and don't waist your money on one of these if you are anywhere serious about guitar playing... save your money and find something better. Fair Warning!

This guitar sounds great in many different genres of music,
I play Heavy Metal, Rock, Pop and Blues, and it sound perfect to all of them.
I use a hm-3 hyper metal pedal, and a little noname amp.
The frets has no buzz tones, and sounds good.
The 6th string is too deep, so it's not a guitar made to play chords with.

I don't adjust pickup myself, but the pickups were adjusted great for my ear,

I have never had any problems with this axe, and i probably never will, it's just a great guitar.

I've been playing for about a year, and I own a Epipone Model SG Special and a Morgan Stratocaster and a cheesy little amp.
And i prefer the epiphone at all times, even with the bad beginner amp, the epiphone sounds great.

Came with a really chessy Epiphone Amp, strap, picks, video, tuner, and cheap cord. I liked the accessories that came with it, but for the guitar itself, its tuners were a bit shaky.

This is my first guitar, but for the sound, it's kinda mushy. I fixed that problem with a new amp.

Action was WAY to high. Had friends adjust the truss rod, but other htan that, it was alright.

Don't swing the guitar while you're playing. It'll bend the really thin neck and create a vibrato sound. Also, the nuts on the tone, volume, and output keeps coming off.

I wouldn't buy a second one. Unfortunately, there are TWO different models of the SG Special. The one manufactured and sold by itself and the one that comes in a Gigpack. If you're looking for one, DON'T buy the gigpack one. The biggest difference is that the gigpack's Epiphone logo is painted into the headstock instead of using a pearloid logo. The second difference is that the knobs are different too.

I love the sound of this guitar... I am going to change the lead out in a month or two for a screamin demon, and I have a vintage blues rythem humbucker in the rythem slot. Very warm tones... I enjoy it....

This has been my downfall.. The tone and volume knobs acted up on me when I first purchased it. I replaced them.. The 3 way fizzes out some times... And I jumped off a drum riser and broke the imput switch into the wood... So I haven't had the best of reliability from day one..

Manufactured in 1998, but the parts could have sat in warehouses for years for all I know. It wouldn't surprise me. I bought it in 1999 as a year-end closeout at Mars for around $180 (they now list for $204). It's got 22 frets, bolt on neck with a heel from the deepest, scariest pits of hell, 3-way selector mounted between the two volume and tone knobs, and has a hum-hum config. The factory hums are passive Epi's, and have "Epihone" stamped on the back, indicative of their manufature. I'm pretty sure it's bot a maple body but know for sure it has a rosewood fretboard and a painted neck. The finish is about 90% opaque and is cherry, and the body is the Gibson SG-style solid body with devil horns at the top. Tune-o-matic bridgew/stopbar tailpiece, and the frets are jumbo. Pretty standard, but since this is a brand-name guitar that is of decent quality and has humbuckers under $200, I'll raise it slightly (i'm assuming "5" is average)

I play a few styles but mostly stay in the louder alt-rock/hardcore/industrial range, influenced by everyone from Tool to Failure to Deftones to Blur. I got this as my first electric and had little knowledge in regards to how to play or what to buy but saw the guitarist from the Swedish hardcore band Refused playing a banged up ebony SG and so figured this'd be good. I play it over a Vox Pathfinder or a Crate Taxi most of the time but have also used some Marshall stacks, and have DOD Grunge and Death Metal distortion pedals that I play it through. The sound was fairly deep when I first got it and was good for a starter. When I wanted something with a better tone, I put a Gibson P90 in the neck and a Seymour Duncan Buckshot in the bridge, plus redid all the cabling. It really, honestly sounds like a Gibson SG Standard and I've in total payed about a grand less. The main dislike is the fact that if I ever felt posessed to play something with more twang or that was really shimmery and bright I'd be screwed. It sounds like something you'd hear (and see) onstage at Ozzfest; full, throaty, and deep. But since that's the general style I play and sing, it's perfect.
(my rating is for off-the-sales-floor sound; with the mods I put in it I'd put it at 9).

The guitar was set up at the factory and was pretty good considering it'd been shipped a few thousand miles. The guy at Mars set it up for me and shortly thereafter I set about converting it for lefty use. The body is not as awkward for lefty use as many righties are since it's pretty well symmetrical, which is a plus, and the dials are fairly low-profile. The pickups were in perfect position, the neck was put on well, and resonance is surprisingly good for what it is. The wood is pretty nice and the finish is good too, although it collects hairline scratches easily. The A-string tuner was defective but I replaced that, so no problems any more. The neck is a little thick and needs to be polished, but then action is good.

You could take this guitar around the world, go crowd surfing at Budokan, get back up on stage and stumble around like Liam Ghallager, drop it on the ground, throw it into an amp, and the thing would still play like a dream. It's built like a tank and it's never crapped out on me. The lower strap button should be checked when you buy; I was in mid-jump once when it popped off and the guitar fell (no damage done though). I'm a pretty big guy; 6'1, 260 lbs, and lift weights heavily and the thing doesn't feel flimsy or thin like so many other guitars do; quite the contrary, it feels nicely big and strong without being awkward.

The warranty covered the replacement of the defective tuner, and service at the shop was prompt and good, which I think is more of a thanks to Mars than to Epi.

I've been playing for three years, only about two seriously, and have progressed pretty well in that time. I also have a 1967 Aria 12-string hollowbody electric that is really awesome, and some vocal equipment plus a Vox and some pedals (as of a week of writing this, I'll also have a Tele). I love this thing and have no regrets. If someone stole this I'd hunt them down and run them over; this is my first (real) guitar, and so it has some real sentimental value and I've modded it and broken it in to a point I like. I polish it compulsively, about once a day, and use Gibson Ace Frehley (hope I spelled that right) signature strings. I didn't like the neck at first but after you get used to it and use some FingerEase, it's really, really fast. I wish guitarmakers would make a better variety of lefty guitars, but if you and need a first guitar or are willing to do the mods and need a reliable axe to swing at shows that is cheap to replace, this is it. Very easy to flip to lefty, very nice overall. It is a fantastic value which is why I gave it a ten, even though it's got little on a vintage or top-of-the-line LP, SG or a PRS than price.

Made in Korea in 2000. Body is apparently laminated alder, with a maple neck. 1 vol, 1 tone control, 3-way switch (I changed this, more on that later), no pickguard, 2 humbuckers. Mine is a nice gloss black finish. Very thin body, thinner than the Les Paul Special 2. I would have liked a pickguard and 2 vol/2 tone combination, but that's why they have the G-310 model for a $100 more. It's good for a beginner, so....

SG->fender cable->Vox Pathfinder (I sometimes use a Vox Wah-Wah pedal)

It sounds pretty good. I've compaired it to the Epi LP Special 2 and it's much brighter and bluesier. Stock, the neck PU was muddy and the bridge PU was twangy. It sounded fine, but it basically only sounded good if you're doing half-distorted classic rock (think "Rockin In the Free World by Neil Young) or with full-on distortion for Hendrix-type stuff.
I put a Duncan '59 in the neck, which sounds great clean and dirty, very versatile. I put an old Duncan "The Mag" pickup in the bridge, which is supposed to be 2 single coils as a 'bucker. It has a 4-conductor wire, so my friend turned the old tone control into a volume for it, where at 0, it's a single coil and up to 10, it fades in the other coil for a full humbucker. He also wired the 3-way switch out of phase, so that it gets a clean, thin jangly sound in the middle position. Here's the problem, the bridge PU still sounds "twangy" and nasally. It's not the pickup's fault, though, the tune-o-matic bridge is so close to the pickup, that even unplugged, it's "twangy" sounding. So under distortion, the bridge PU sounds great, when I need clean, I use the neck or middle position.
Anyway, when it was stock, it was good for classic rock, punk, some metal. Any sounds that need a Gibson with humbuckers, this guitar will give you that basic sound. With my modifications, it nails the Oasis sound I like so much. Nice for blues or some metal (not dark and crunchy enough, though). I've played a Gibson SG-X with a 500T, and found my SG Special much more versatile and more fun.

The 3-way switch is starting to wear out and the jack-wiring came loose, but big deal.

Solid strap buttons, good tuners, no problems. I'm leary of the 3-way switch cutting out on me, though. If that was fixed, I'd trust it live. Sturdy guitar, very light weight.

I love it. I've played for about 9 months now and it was my first guitar. I love the look and sound of it, it's an excellent bargin. It's worth the price just to look at, the SG shape rules!
Now I'm considering an Epi LP Std or a Sheraton just because they'd be even better, but for a beginner, it's a great deal.

The guitar has just volume and tone controls with a 3-way selector for it's 2 humbuckers, nothing fancy. The finish is nice, mine is red and I believe they also sell it in olive (like a green) and black. The tuners are kind of crappy, very touchy, and easily bumped out of tune. Although Musicians Friend told me it would not come with a cable, it did. I've had it for about 3 months now and there was a time when the 3-way selector wasn't working or one of the humbuckers stopped working and this went on and off for about a week but it's been fine for the last month. It has a lifetime warranty through Gibson. For a low budget guitar it does seem to be one of the best.

Although I like a wide range of music, I really wanted this guitar to make that nice AC/DC sound and it does that nicely! I'm using it with a Marshall Valvestate VS-15 amp. This combination does not provide a real clean sound however, it provides a nice grunge, distortion type sound perfect for heavy metal.

Many others wrote about how this guitar did not come set right from the factory. Mine however, was set right on the money. Everything seemed to be adjusted perfectly.

I'll be honest here, with the strange problems I have had with the sound cutting out due to a bad pickup or switch, I would be afraid to use this as my main gig guitar. I would assume however, that anyone playing live would have a better guitar anyway! I would say it makes a great practice guitar.

Well, I was going to take advantage of the warranty but my problem went away by itself. All I had to do was call a toll free number to Gibson that Musicians Friend provided me and they told me where to take it. Seems like the whole warranty situation is very easy.

I've been playing for about a year and a half. I also own a Fender acoustic guitar. If it were stolen I would definately buy it again. I would maybe consider upgrading to the Epiphone G-400 if I could afford it though. The G-400 is basically an upgraded version of this one for about $420.

Made in Indonesia year 1999. 22 frets rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays. It has one tone one volume control, 3 way pickup selector switch. It's equipped with 2 epi open coil humbuckers. Ebony finish. It had those really cheap tuners when I bought them.

I like the 60's psychedelic style and this one fits it perfectly. Another reason I bought this guitar is because Clapton was using a SG during his Cream days. This guitar isn't the most versatile one but it holds up pretty good if you play blues and metal. I use the same amp as with my other guitars( Gibson the hawk and Fender strat), I use a Marshall 15 watt valvestate amp. It's little noisy sometimes but it's tolerable. The sound is very in the middle, not full and not thin.

It was setup pretty well when I got it. But after 6 months of using it and after weather changes, the wood kind of shrunk which is pretty normal for all new guitars. The edges on the horns could have been filed a little better. Everything was very much intact, nothing was loose. I hated the cheap tuners though, so I replaced it with Gibson kluson style tuners which gives it a little bit of attitude. I put covers on the humbuckers too, to give it a little bit of class.

I haven't dropped it yet and I don't intend to. I think it's gonna be good live, but I'm not gonna gig without a backup. Even if I had a Gibson Les Paul. With the proper care everything should last.

I've been playing for 2 and a half years and I own two other guitars. If it were lost or stolen I would mourn for it a little bit. I'm probably not gonna buy it again because I already have two amazing guitars anyway. My favorite thing about this guitar is that it's an SG. If you have the money to buy say a G400, go buy the G400. And if you have the money to buy a Gibson then buy the Gibson.

Just got a brand new (2000) SG Special, manufactured in Indonesia, inspected and set up in US. 22 frets, laminated mahogany+alder body, mahogany neck/head. Two humbuckers, One volume/One tone control and a three way selector. Tun-o-matic with stop tailpiece on double cutaway SG style body, no pickguard. Ok tuners, very wide neck+fingerboard (rosewood), nice frets and dot inlays. I got a wonderful cherry finish that is actually (nicely) darker than i expected. I got guitar only from Musician's Friend and they popped in a cord and allen wrench for the truss rod with it (nice packaging, too!). Gave it a nine because I was only looking for these features, nothing more.

I play a lot of jazz, and so i got a super duper De Armond X-155, but i also play punk and i needed something i wouldnt have to worry about smashing around by accident. This also gave me more frets than my X-155. So i got this guitar to play loud music and it does just that. Sounds incredible with a little overdrive (or a lot!), and just as good clean. It's got that twangy metallic type of sound acoustically/clean, which is ok by me. Very full, punchy, just like any other SG. Compared to an actual Epiphone Special I or II, the volume and tone knobs actually do have an "in between." Tone selection is nice and the knobs work well. The first time i played it was with a small crate practice amp, and even with the wimpy amp the guitar sounded just great. Then i plugged it into a huge peavey and played a chord and had to sit down and breathe for a bit. It blew me away! In my opinion I actually liked this better than other SG's (standard, custom) and GS's (310, 400) that ive played.

The finish was, as i said before, very nice, although i did notice where Epiphone tended to cut corners: small spaces like the front of the head or by the neck joint where paint was somewhat poorly done, and the factory heighth of the pickups werent to my liking (a little low). The action is quite nice by the first fret, not much buzzing at all, but a little high towards the fifteenth and higher. Easily adjusted. Frets certainly impressed me; they were done very well. The dot inlays arent uniform, that is, some reflect brightly while others dont (not that i care). Tuners were pretty good, too. Like i said before, there isnt a pickguard and that is the big definer between the special and other SG's. But it looks good like that. Thats about it.

Seems pretty solid, I dont doubt that the finish will be perfect till it get burned or blown up....Im happy with the strap buttons, my old Epi Special I just didnt wanna keep its buttons on...but looks like Epiphone smartened up a bit. Hardware looks good, although i would advise new pickups if you really want this to last a long time...ive used these before and they wont live much longer than four or five years. This would be great for gigs, and i would definitely use it w/ out a backup, even though i ALWAYS have backup (better safe than sorry).

Well, fantastic value it is. I wanted a cheap guitar and i got more than i expected for less than i expected. Thanks epiphone for makingan affordable SG!!!! been playing for seven years and have plenty of expensive equipment (ie the X155), but i bought this for punk rock and it suits me. if you are a beginner this is a great guitar to get. arg, wish i had something profound to say.

This has 2 humbuckers with a 3-way switch. It has volume and gain knobs. Look on website for other features.

This is my first electric. Certaintly a cheap guitar. I use this with a Boss ME-30 and Fender Frontman 25. Its a nice combonation. This guitar has nice low end and distortion. You need to get it setup, because mine would not tune until I did. I think for the price, this will do for most guitarists with not much experience.

Action/Intonation was not good from factory. After a professional setup, I was much happier. Everything seems to be in good shape.

I use this without a backup. My budget is very limited. I play it live, and it works fine. I expect it to last.

I have been playing for a couple of year. I also play acoustic. I've had this guitar for 2 months, and I'm definitely satisfied for the money. If it were to break or I lost it, I'd probably save for a G400. I love the look of this guitar. I have the Cherry Red, and everyone including me thinks it looks sweet. I chose this over Squiers because of the look and sound. It works great for beginner to intermediate players.

It is an okay guitar with it's features. It was Korean made with 22 frets. The laminated top was what came with this guitar. It has one volume and one tone control. It is a double cut away SG, and it came with a strape, and cord.

The reason I bought this guitar was because I like AC/DC, and it is perfect for the way I play. It's great with distortion.Next year I'm going to take a big leap and get a Gibson SG special, I like the Epiphone, but I want the real thing.

My guitar was messed up at the factory so I got 45% off. It had a small finsh problem , but you could hardly notice it. So I got very cheap. The rest was perfect though.

This guitar could deal with live playing. I hope it will last, because I plan to keep it even though I plan to get a Gibson. You could play it for hours and it will stay all in one piece. Its great.

VERY BASIC This guitar was made in 1999 or 2000 in korea.it has 22 frets, 1 volume, 1 tone, with 3-way selector,open coil H/H pickup configuration, Mahogany neck and Mahogany/Alder Laminated body. The finish on this guitar is perfect a pretty cherry finish with no ding or scratches. It is a sg with tune-o-matic and stop tail peice. the tuners are not so great but they will hold up ok on light playing. If you are thinking about this guitar think about geting new tuners if you plan to use it for any shows or if you are ruff on your guitars. It came with a peice of crap cord too.

it sounds very good for the price i was very suprised. I play mostly punk/rockabilly stuff and it is fine. it has a very low down dirty sound great for distortion. it would not be good for jazz or country. this guitar was made for distortion

The guitar was setup perfectly out of the box it was even a little in tune. the guitar came with a checklist of the stuff it was inspected for like action, string height, Hardware, electronics the usual. The pickups were to low but that is very easy to fix. The guitar was perfect no flaws of any kind everything is great.

this guitar seems to hold up very well i have head horrible storys about the strap buttons on other special models but these ones are solid as a rock at least the ones on mine are. This guitar will withstand playing live it is a great backup or main guitar i like it. the finish is great the best finish on an epiphone i have seen in a long time(get the cherry finish its the best).

i have never delt with them but i hear they are a pain in the butt. It comes with a lifetime warranty but it is void if you modifie it in any way like replacing the tuners which i strongly suggest.
