I play alot of different styles. Everything from Blues, Classic rock and grunge. I am a Les Paul man through and through, at least I used to be. I hated Fenders with a passion. (I still hate Strats, strats should die) I picked this guitar up though after getting bored with the Les Paul's continuous tone. It will always sound good no matter what, but it always sounds the same too. I became familiar with it through one of my favourite bands, Nirvana. At first I thought I'd use it basically for my harder more simpler songs and use my Paul for everything else. Uh uh, I was wrong. This guitar can range from the fattest blues tones to the epidemy of distortion rock. It has a large variety of tone settings and sounds amazing through tube or solid state amps. From my favourite band, Led Zeppelin to another, Nirvana, and even back to the blues of the 50' and 60's this guitar covers all.

Everything is solid I even smashed it into a mic stand really hard by accident and I almost freaked but after the song I had a look at it and it was fine.

Best guitar hands down. I have been converted to hating Fenders with a passion to having my favourtie guitar be one. It plays everything incredably well. My 2 Les Pauls are left in the dust. Amazingly fast neck. Good sized frets. Absolutely perfect. And about 4000 bucks less than the Les Paul standard.

i play alot of alternative rock and blues. i'm using it with a POD line 6.
to begin with the sound wasn't what i would call top notch or world call by any means. the stock pickups are good for clean sounds (the bridge pickup is a bit weak though), the neck pickup has a nice round warm sound to it. (very suprised by it). however once i hit the old ds-1 those pickups squeeled like a pig being slaughtered.
there are out of phase options on it which allows you to get a really thin surf sound (which is cool, but i have no real use for).
the guitar itself has a few problems though. to being with it's got a .47 cap on the tone pot which really sucks because it cuts out all the brightness of the pickups. it just makes it kinda bass heavy. the pickups are well like i said pretty lame if you want to use distortion at all.. the bridge moves and slides around alot due to the fact that it's a floating tremlo. and if you use the whammy bar you can kiss tunning stability good-bye. a single dive bomb will send this guitar back to the tunner immediatly.
now if your looking at this review and want to get this guitar.. i recomend a few modifications.
#1. take electrical tape and wrap it around the bridge posts and then put it back into the sockets so that bugger can't move around and mess with inotation and tunning stability.
#2. replace at the very least the bridge pickup.
#3. put a .22 cap on the tone pot
#4. throw the tremlo arm in the trash

the initial set up was good it played well right out of the box. the pickups aren't staggered and their covered with some plastic pickup covers (Which are okay i suppose). all the routes were good the fretwire is a bit small but with such a small neck it's perfect.
i love this guitar for the weight and the neck mostly. it's probably the most comfortable guitar i've ever played. i'm a midget compared to most people and most girls have hands bigger than my own.
if you got big hands you might want to stay away from this guitar.
when i first got this guitar (after playing a strat for years) it felt like a toy.

after about 3 months of having this guitar i had to replace one of the selector switches.. their really cheaply made and they break really quick if used alot. luckly you can get better quality replacement parts from stewmac.com or warmoth.com for pretty cheap.
the finish will last it's allready taken a bit of abuse and no digsor scratches. i wouldn't throw it down on a concrete floor and expect it to not dent though. (basswood is a soft wood)
honestly you might want to replace all the electronics on this guitar initially or else your gonna be replacing them one by one as time goes on.
i give this a 5 because everything 'cept the electronics are very well made and sturdy.

never delt with fender... though i doubt they really care much.
and i'm pretty sure it came with a life time warranty (which amount to nothing when you read the fine print)

over all this is a great guitar if you have small hands and a fragile back. it could honestly be a awesome guitar with about $150 worth of modifications (assuming your to replace both pickups)
i've since put a JB jr in the bridge, a lil' 59 in the neck , replaced the pots with 500k pots, put in a .22 tone cap , locked down the tremlo , taped up the bridge threw away the tremlo arm and let me tell you this little beast is just as good as my strat if not a little better. it's my #1 guitar now.

I only tried this out in a guitar shop for about an hour(!), much to the annoyance of the staff and other customers, but I couldn't really tear myself away from it. It is a 2002 lake placid blue competition stripe. The finish seemed quite sturdy, just to test, when no-one was looking, I knocked the back of it, quite hard. I did this to my BC rich, and it dented. Nothing like that with this. Also, my Bcrich has a big old neck, which I find hard to manage. This neck was perfect for me, as I am only 5'9.

The grunge association seems to bring out the desire to play a lot of alternative stuff, and the pickup selectors gave a very wide choice of sound. I would like to try it out with a big muff. But, just to test it out, I tried some really heavy metal. It actually handled it better than the PRS santana that I also tried out.

I have a 2002 candy apple red one, it was made in Japan. It has 22 small frets, and a basswood body. I has 2 single coil pickups and the 2 3 way switches. It has a vibrato tailpiece. It would be nice if I could adjust the action and thruss rod easier.
Sound
:

It has a good single coil tone. I play on the bridge pickup a lot. I also like the neck, which is a bit louder. There are 2 combos. In all it has a nice range of sounds. I play punk, alt-rock, and grunge, with a little blues. It works fine for my style.

I love the finish on this guitar, it is almost as good as the one on my American Stratocaster. The Japanese factory did a really good paint and finishing job. I love the way the neck smells, it almost smells like gingerbread. The action was okay, but there is some slight buzzing at the bridge, which can't be heard through the amp however. For that I took of 1 point.

It seems well built. The hardware all seems quite solid, and looks as though it will last. I'm not sure if I would pay it live, due mainly to the buzzing at the bridge. But it is a solid guitar.

Overall this is a very good guitar. I play it all the time. I really like the neck, it fits my hands well. It has a nice tone too it. It would be nicer if it had a thruss rod adjustment hole, and better string saddles. All in all I would buy the guitar again if anything ever happened to it.

MAde in japan,22 frets?the basic mustang controls im sure all you mustang fans know by now.I really liek the "phase on/off" switches. They give u endless possibilities of toneality. The neck and body are extremely thin and the guitar is incredibly light.I got a special price on mine, and it came with a fender deluxe gigbag. These limited edition guitars from fender are very rare and will probably be jacked up in price soon.

i play alot of heavuer rock and i thought i would have to switch pickups on my new mustang.but i run it through a boss metal zone and the pickups are surprisingly versitaile and quiet. The jag stangs pickups attracted ALOTTTTT of hum and these are nice and quiet. This guitar can make ALOT of all sorts of different sounds in terms of tone and thickness, even thought i think the metal zone may have helped alot. The sounds can go from paper thin to heavy thick "high outputish" sounds that are comparable to my duncan invader on my other guitar.

This guitar had a couple scratches when i bought it.They were very smalll and on the back or top of the headstock. The bridge pickup was a litle high but i lowered it.The tuning pegs were very tight compared to my strat, this guitar seems to go out of tune fairly easily. The tailpiece is interesting since the strings rap around the bottom, nothin is holding the bridge in place either which i alos found intriguing. Its candy apple red with the stripe and pearly pickguard, the finish seems to be done very well.,the headstock and fender logo are all glossy which i noticed with made in japan fenders.

I probably would gig with this guitar without a backup cause thats just the way i am.Everything else on it seems like it will last a long time,i cant wait to test it out at a live gig soon.Like most fender guitars it seems to be pretty tough, the finish seems like it could dent off easily but not chip like the jag stang's paper thin laquer job.

ive been playing for about a year now and this is probablty the best guitar ive ever owned out of my other 2 electrics which are mexi strats.Hell, the guys from HOG are probably reading this right now.If it were stolen idk wat id do since this damn guitar is so hard to find anywhere.I think the best thing about it is the phase on/off switches cause it provides unique versitality that other guitars just dont have.I did wish it had locking tuners though, the dynamic fender vibrato really pushes it out of tune.i really love this guitar though,i hope it last me a long time.If u got any questions u wanna ask about the guitar before purchasing it somehwere u can email me,ide be glad to help.

This is one nice guitar! I think its either japanese or american. its got 22 frets, controls are master volume and master tone, its blue w/ a mother of pearl pickgaurd and ltd. edition painted headstock( just like the one in the smells like teen spirit video!).The Bridge is really funky looking, i'm not sure what the people at fender call it. the pickups are some form of gold lace, and it came w/ a really cool gig-bag, strap, cable . i think the tuners are vintage but i cant be sure.

i play grunge and alternitive rock like Pearl Jam , nirvana, soundgarden, some led zepplin and other various artists in that category, etc.. I use a really nice dean markley amp, im not sure what make exactly, but i could find out and post it up again. i also use BOSS turbo distortion, distortion DS-1, Tube screamer, dunlop crybaby 535, BOSS phaser, flanger ,MXR phase 90 and dyna comp and an ernie ball volume/pan pedal. it can get noisy on some settings, but hey, i play grunge so i dont mind alot of feedback. The sound is more rich and full than it is bright, sharp, and punchy( more for chords and distortion and lower notes than it is for highs and solos). There are maybe 10 or so sounds you can make w/ the guitar alone(not as much variety as the Jimmy Page les paul, but it suffices). i dont have any dislikes about this guitar but one thing thats really nice about it is that the volume knob isnt so close to the strings that youll turn yourself down, like on most strats. overall, this is like my dream guitar and its like perfect.

guitar is great for live playing but i wouldn't go without a backup because it is basswood, which is as sturdy as my american standard strat(alder) but it sounds much better. strap buttons are solid and so is this guitar cause im in a band where theres alot of guitar smashing, and its withstood most of my abuse. very dependable.
