Made in '85 or '86 in Japan of course with a locking Kahler trem. H/H with 3-way and a coil tap. A 25.5" scale rosewood neck. The body is an off white sorta pearl color.

I love the sound of this guitar especially with the coil tap. It sounds great going through an amp and with the several distortions I've used ie. (Turbo Rat, MXR dist.+, Big Muff, Boss Od/Dist.)

Great action and a perfect locking nut. I didn't know if I would like the Kahler tremolo but is super smooth and I can rest my hand on it while muting with out affecting the pitch. It came with a replacement trem arm but it works fine. Since being purchased I've raised the bridge p/u a bit. All the hardware is worn but none of it has rusted. The body has dings and a decent sized dent near the ass of the guitar. The finish looks good for being 20 years old.

My Tele was made in 1986 and was, obviously, made in Japan. It's paint scheme is black on black on black. everything but the fret board is black, the fret board is rosewood. I've been trying to find out info about my model but so far I'm not sure. Right now I'm pretty sure it either has the temp system I or II. All I know is the trem doesn't lock make it fix. According to fender all of the temps in the serise were suposed to have arms that lcok in place and also have tool hidden in them, but mine doesn't. mine just slides in and out. there is a ring around the arm port that helps to hold it in place though. I have no idea what woods are used. I would assume the neck is Maple, and the body seems to be on the heavy side. Also, I don't know what type of pickup were used. However it is set-up with two single coils and a humbucker. Mine also has there small selector switches that, I think, bring the pick-ups in and out of faze and may also turn them off. I've owned this guitar for almost 2 years now, bought it on ebay for around $425 with a fender USA hardshell case.

In my opinion this guitar is best suited for regular to heavier strings. right now I have lights on mine, and the megnitism from the pick-up pull them a little too much for my tastes. I've only ever played this through my little 20 watt amp and it sounds good. I also use it with a ZOOM 505 multi-effects pedal. works fine through that too. One complaint I have about playing it is that when I'm playing it unamplified, the strings buzz a little. when plugged in I donlt really notice it through the amp though. The sounds this guitar can make are pretty limitless, at least as far as any stock guitar can get.

The finishes ont his guitar are very high quality. the only natural aging blemishing I've seen has been on the neck plate. it was black chromed and the finish on it is a little checked, but nothing major at all. the frets are nice and smooth on the ends. aside from those things I can't really comment on what happened at the factory. I bought it just a couple years back so other people played it for a good 19-20 years, so they could have did some tweeking. everything works and looks great though. I'm just glad mine has a black finish, I personally hate all the metalic finished that were released in this serise. they look like they came out of the 80s and that's not good.

I don't play live, but this guitar seems like it can hold it's own just fine. it doesn't knock out of tone easily, unless you trem the crap out of it, which I don't.

While I was on the macket for a new guitar, back when I bought this one, I was actually in the market for a Mustang, but I guess at the time so was everyone else so they were selling for $100 more than I wanted to pay. (I'm talking about RI mustangs here) I stumbled into this guitar in an ebay listing and thought looks cool, discriptions make it seem like a great player, "Screw it, I'll buy it". So I did. If this guitar were stolen or lost I'd be very upset. I would buy another if I could get a good deal on it. All in all this guitar is a great all in one guitar, but in that it can make it a little to easy to hide. if that makes any sense. as a side note, if some could tell me the actual name of the model pick-ups in these I would appriciate it.

early to mid 80's telecaster "contemporary" MIJ. some kind of greenish silver metalflake finish. looks pretty cool under stage lights anyway. neck and bridge humbucker with coil taps, original as far as i know. not sure whats on the neck, i've heard its painted but there's a pretty gnarly ding in it and its just as black under the scratch as anywhere else so if it is painted it is pretty thick paint. rosewood fingerboard. necks a little on the thick side but plays great. full floating bridge which i have since had blocked up.(bought it in a pawn shop and never had the arm for the trem so i used it for a while without an arm but got tired of tuning problems)

i've used this guitar for all styles from metallica to pantera to bluegrass and blues. i love it. humbuckers are rich and this thing has so much bottom end it's scary. tap the coils and you are rewarded with a very tele like bite and snarl. it does a wonderful job of bridging the gap between a tele and a les paul. i've been using it with a war torn crate g60 for about the last 14 years. had a breif stint with an original marshall jcm800 as well(got tired of the reliability issues with the marshall, but it sounded like the voice of god) all in all the only guitar that i've liked the tone of better is my '81 telecaster elite.

as i said earlier guitar came from a pawn shop and definitely showed some wear and tear. had it professionally set up and really can't complain. it played great. the paint was a little chewed and is now quite chewed but still holding up ok(6 years of being my only guitar and playing regular gigs will do that, followed by letting my kids play it) overall no complaints.

this guitar has fallen down a flight of stairs, been thrown off a stage more than once, stepped on, dropped, had every type of beverage known to man spilled on it, survived my kids(no small feat) and generally been abused to the extreme. the only problems i have had with it were tuning(fixed that by blocking the bridge cuz i don't need the trem anyways), a loose wire to the neck pickup(started after dropping it down the stairs), a couple bent fine tuners(after throwing it off the stage) a worn out tuning machine(was missing its cap when i got it) and i keep busting the itty bitty little coil tap switches.(about 5 bucks at the local radio shack and won't leave you hanging anyways. overall if there is a tougher guitar i wouldn't know what it would be.

i've been playing for about 18 years. had this guitar since the early 90's and it was my only guitar for a long time. if it were stolen i'd track down the thief and the end result would not be good. i don't think i could replace it and i would not be happy. really its been rock solid and its only in the last year or two that i have relegated it to secondary guitar due to the fact that i've fallen in love with my '82 tele elite once again. overall if you can find one for any reasonable price buy it, you won't be sorry. i only wish i could find more information on it e.g. market values, production years, original price, etc.

This is a mid 80's Made in Japan that is very solid. The basswood body has a very nice and warm tone to it. It seems to weight a little bit more then a standard tele, but still very light and easy to play on.
The system 1 Schaller bridge is very different. It looks and feels very similiar to an older Kahler bridge, but it's not. It's very stable, any palm muting will not knock it out of tune like a floyd rose would.
The finish is extremely solid for a guitar that is almost 20 years old. There are a few small dents, but nothing eye popping. The metallic finish looks very good, unlike anything I've seen before.
The tele body style is just that, a tele. No special bevels or cutaways, but it is very playable. Upper fret access is very smooth and not at all a problem.
Speaking of frets, the 22 fret rosewood fretboard is very smooth and easy to play. The neck is abit thicker then some of my other necks, like an Ibanez wizard, but still feels very comfortable and easy to play on.
1 intersting note is the TBX tone control. When the tone is at 5, it is set to normal. A clockwise twist will boost the treble and cut bass, while a turning the knob the otherway will boost bass and cut treble. I find it to be a neat little function.
The only gripe I would have is the painted neck. I'm not a huge fan of them usually because they can become sticky, but so far this one has not had a single problem.
Sound
:

The 2 humbuckers I believe are the stock ones and they sound pretty decent. I'm not sure if I'm going to swap them or not. The neck pup is nice and warm while the bridge has a nice bite. With the coil taps engaged, the guitar has a very stratty sound in the neck. The bridge has a bit of the tele bite, but not alot of it.
Even though this was put out in the 80's to be Fender's "Heavy Metal tele", I can't see this doing any modern metal. It does have a great clean sound and it perfect or blues or hard rock stuff. I have found that it can get a pretty decent 80's metal tone when combined with the right amp, but don't expect anything over the top.
Overall it sounds very good and I've very happy with it.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The action was very low and easy to play. The pups were sitting very low on the guitar and 1 of these days I'll adjust the height.
For a 20 year old guitar, this thing is in fantastic shape. The neck is snug in the pocket with no looseness at all. The frets are nicely filed, no sharp edges here. The pots are very smooth except when turned all the way to 0 on the tone, it's a little scratchy but otherwise very quiet.
The fine tuners on the bridge are the originals and very smooth and easy. I'm also very surprised at the tuning pegs on the headstock. Very smooth. I can know see why they always say the mid 80's MIJ stuff was so good.

:

First thing I did was repalce the stock strap buttons with strap locks. I don't want this thing accidentally falling to the floor. The black chrome on the hardware is still pretty solid. Just a few faded spots, nothing major or anything that would affect the playability.
I've read some conflicting reviews of the Schaller System 1 bridge. I haven't had a problem with it and a I really enjoy it. I don't do alot of trem work, but this thing feels very smooth and solid.

I had to search for a couple hours before I found out exactly what make and model this was. I emailed fender with the serial number a few pics and they got back to me within 24 hours with all the pertinent info.
I'm sure since this is 20 years old, there's no way Fender would do anything except try to sell me a new guitar.
The only problem I could forsee is finiding replacement parts for the bridge. Schaller doesn't support it and finding pieces for it are very difficult. I'm hoping this won't become an issue as I don't use the trem much.

I've been playing for the better part of 6+ years. I've got a couple of other guitars around the house. I fancy myself a tinkerer, that is picking up a beater and transforming it into a great playing axe. This guitar doesn't need a thing, except maybe a new set of strings.
I'd been eyeing this at a local shop for almost 2 years before I finally traded a mid 90's MIK superstrat and an SX guitar for this. I feel like I definately came out on top. In total, I spent about 300 bucks so I'm very happy with this.
If anything happened to this guitar, I'd pretty much be out of luck. I've personally never seen another one like this so I'd just have to go guitar hunting again.

I wasn't so hot on the sound from the factory pickups, so I took them out after a couple of months. I've had a neck pickup that was taken out of a Yamaha guitar since then, and a couple of different bridge pickups. The bridge pickup I've had in it since late 1995 is a DiMarzio Dual Sound. From 1994 until recently I played it through a late 80's Crate G212 combo. I got a decent metalesque sound, with a not so great clean tone. That amp finally kicked and I replaced it with a Peavey Classic 50, which has a much nicer all-around sound.

I bought it used in 1994, so I don't about the factory setup on it, but it was pretty well set up at the shop I bought it from. The action on this guitar is great, though. I love the neck on it, that's the reason I bought the guitar. The finish is this horrible purplish color. It was cracking when I bought the guitar, which I've since made worse.

Some parts of this guitar are reliable and others I wouldn't trust. This has been my primary guitar for the last 10 years. I bought it 1994 a couple of weeks before my (then) band's first gig. I played in that group until late 1999 and this was the guitar I played at almost every show. Early on, though, I had to replace most of the hardware. The bridge on this thing sucks. The saddles wore out and I was regularly replacing A strings for a while (I was pretty much guaranteed to break a string every gig). I had the same problem with the locking nut, but I was able to buff the chunks out of that without any further problems. The bridge, though, I had to replace. It's a weird size, and I couldn't find a drop-in replacement so I ended up installing a Kahler Pro because I got my hands on one for cheap (OK, free). I also had to replace the strap pins because they were coming out of the guitar. I replaced them with those leather strap holders, which I put in with 1-1/2" screws.
Other than that, it's been a workhorse. I beat the living crap out of this guitar playing in a punk band for six years. There are small chunks out of the body from where it's been dropped or had a mic stand smashed into it. There's a crack in headstock that's been there since 1995. I've had it glued once, but it's coming apart again. In any case. I replaced the tuners two years ago because the originals wore out.

I absolutely love this guitar, but as I've said, it needed work. It was well worth the price, although I wish it had come with a case, or that I had been able to actually buy a case for it. The store wouldn't sell me a Telecaster case because they only keep the minimum number of cases on hand they absolutely have to for the guitars that come with them.
I bought this guitar because it had the best neck of everything I tried out. I did eventually have the paint taken off the neck because it would get disgusting at gigs. I think the bridges on these are junk, and good luck finding replacement parts for them. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to replace the locking nut on this thing because it's such a weird size.
I'd buy another one in a minute, though, if it was a good price and I thought I'd be able to find a replacement bridge that I could put in without much routing. I think one might be easier to find now than ten years ago.

1984 Japanese
22 frets
2 single-coil 1 humbucker
2 switches for the sc pickups - 1 for putting the humbucker in or out of phase
Unknown wood but just the right weight for me
High-gloss Black
Best Fender whammy I've ever used
Locking nut - fine tuners on bridge
Just the right size neck for my hands
Came with the cheap plastic Tele case made around that time - I now put in in the case for my 72 Tele Custom that I don't take out of the house.

My main guitar : rock, pop, country, easy-listening (not very good for jazz though)
Musicman 130HD through 2 300watt EV-gold 12's in separate JBL ported cubes.
Effects are numerous: Korg A-4, acoustic simulator and more stomp boxes
Not noisy at all - live or recording
Has many sounds to compliment my variety of styles
I like this guitar - no dislikes

Action it came just the way I like it - no adjustments needed.
Eventually I had to raise the humbuckerer a little.
Top and bridge just fine.
The ONLY flaw (I noted comments about string breakage) was breaking strings every 15 minutes on stage. It was the cheap pot-metal wheels - I had them replaced with stainless steel ones and never a problem again.

Other gear? Too much to list: 6 electrics - 3 basses - 5 acoustics (but my favorite is my 1930's Roca Parlor guitar)
Before I bought the guitar I asked them about best cash price (list was $700+) so I got my wish of $150 off I guess.
If it were lost or stolen I would be lost. I guess I would have to find some kind of replacement which I'm sure I could. I have been trying to find another Tele for years as a backup - no luck - the Strat versions I've seen suck.
I don't HATE anything anything about this guitar - the best Japanese Tele ever made in my opinion.
Yes, compared it to regular Teles I was looking at I chose this one for the extra sounds and features.
It needs nothing. Does anyone want to sell me theirs?

Same spec as the others, although I have the dual humbucker model. Not sure on the exact year of production, but its Japanese, old and kinda pink. I guess it could be Burgundy Mist thats yellowed or something. It's gonna be refinished soon anyways..
2 buckers, both coilsplit-able. Volume, tone, tremelo bridge, 3-way switch. What more can you want??

I play in a Pixies tribute band, and hey, this is the same guitar Black Francis used! I took off the locking nut and added a string tree (like Black did), which keeps things a lot more simple, especially for live work. Obviously it gets the Pixies sound spot on.
And then some. (Both pickups coilsplit, for any Pixies fans)
I'm also involved in originals projects, and the guitar is flexible enough to meet most of my needs. Since the coilsplit feature splits to the outer coil of each pickup, the bridge is super trebley and thwacky, much like a Jaguar, making it excellent for surf.
Big meaty middly bridge humbucker, smooth bluesy neck bucker. Love it.
Its definately more a rhythm guitar than a lead guitar (especially after my little mods), but maybe I've just gotta mess with the action a little.
My basic setup is a Marshall JCM2000 DSL50 head into a Trace Elliot 4x12, with a Marshall Guvnor+ and original Marshall Bluesbreaker pedals in front of it. Whats with all the Marshall stuff? I have no idea! Good sounds I guess...

Like I said, it feels like much more of a rhythm guitar than for super widdley solos, although readdressing the action and strings may sort this. I'm good for now.
Found this baby on eBay after years of wondering if they even existed over here in the UK. The fella did a nice job of setting up the axe prior to sending.
Feels great for chord work.

I've used it live three times now with little problems (just tuning/tremelo problems the first time, but that was my fault really).
The finish is dented and scratched in a few places, but the guitar is like over 15 years old! I'll let that slide. Anyways, like I said, I'm getting it refinished in off-white :)
I use a backup live to play the drop-D stuff, tuning down upsets the tremelo and throws the rest of the guitar out of tune- not what you want in a live situation. The bridge is a little rusted around the screws and such, but...again, its an old guitar. Due some TLC in the near future..

Not a true "country" sound like a traditional telecaster. More of a 1980's new wave tone. A great rock and roll studio guitar that isn't too heavy. Currently using a Peavy Special 130 Amp. The action at 1st was OK but not great. This was easily corrected with the microtilt feature. The guitar was bathed in the most stunning, flawless black coat I've ever seen - the back of the neck & headstock were also black.

2 problems that I encountered - the nut had a "hydraulic press" type configuration. The teeth that "bit" the strings could drop down from the "roof" of the nut during string changing - causing you to pass the string over the TOP of the tooth. When you locked the nut - you cut the string as it was being pressed against the top of the sharp edged nut housing & the top of the "tooth". This was easily overcome by using Quick Gel to permanently fasten the teeth in their proper place. Problem #2 - a couple of the fine tuners stripped out the holes they were in. I simply (and carefully) filled the stipped holes with "Quick Steel" & re - tapped the holes - never again to have a problem. This may be an unacceptable level of malfunction to some - but it was quick & easy to fix.

The guitar was "tweaked" for me a few times over the years I had it by a "Fender authorized" tech for free. Being that I lived in the absolute center of no where - it was a rare thing that I saw a guitar tech. I told him about the nut & fine tuner problem - so he never charged me.

Been playing since 1983. I was amazed by the tremelo. It was supposedly a "cheap piece of junk" - but I could do anything with it that could be done with a Floyd & still be in tune. In a moment of madness I sold this guitar (in 1993). I still get sick inside when I think about doing this. The only other Contemporary Telecaster I ever saw was on the wall of the old Art's music store in Montgomery, Al. It was burgundy with a black neck. I would absolutely LOVE to have another one!!! With the negative responses I've read, I'm beginning to think that I got lucky when I bought mine.

1987 made in Japan, Metallic green, single coil strat style pups at neck & Middle, Humbucker in bridge. Kahler floating vibrato with fine tuners, Black Graphite neck with locking nut, black headstock, schaller tuners, rosewood fretboard, 12" FLAT radius, JUMBO Frets. one vol one & tone knob, three mini toggles for on/off of each pickup.

Sounded a little tinny for me. fairly thin unplugged tones, The neck pickup did the fender thing okay (blues/surf) and the updated "Hot" Bridge HB was loud and grindy but overall the quality of the sounds was lacking; a bit harsh and overblown. As this guitar seems to have been aimed at the younger, beginner-intermmediate crowd, this is not surprising. Those seeking true tone with depth should look elsewhere......

VERY fat neck, high action, tough to play. the flat board and huge frets made bending strings a breeze but that was about it. I admittedly hate vibratos, especially floating models and I rest my hand on the bridge when playing. On this guitar that obviously knocked it out of tune. But the worst was that the locking nut broke strings EVERY time I played it!! And I DON'T break strings!

Due to the string breakage mentioned above, I always needed a back up; otherwise it seemed fairly tough. I left it in my car's trunk as my emergency jam guitar, as its graphite neck could withstand warping from heat cold and damp. No problems while I owned it.

I won this in a contest; we opened the front door one day and there it was, in a cardboard box, in tune and ready to play! I really liked the fret board, nice flat thick slab of rosewood, big monster frets. The best feature though were the three mini toggles for the p/ups; together with the master vol & tone, it was a very easy to use guitar.
Otherwise, it should be considered a beginner's quality level axe and valued monetarily as such. For a young metal head who wants a little versatility, this should be a good durable first guitar with lots of nice features.

This guitar sounds and plys awful. No matter what amp. It has that bright nasty tinny thin sound. the neck picup sounds like mud. I sold this to my brother so he can have a beginner ax.

Yes, I played it live a few times, when I broke a string on my main guitar. It's a pretty solid guitar. No problems with anything. I would not use this as a main guitar.

I've bought this at an auction and thought it was really cool since I have never seen one before. Model years is 1985. All are 22 fret. Controls: vol/tone "F" on the face of the dials. Pickups: 2 Fender open face humbuckers. Switches: 3-way toggle and mini-toggle. Mini toggle allows you to swtich between single coil mode and full humbucker mode. Body appears to be one piece basswood painted silver, neck is painted black with rosewood fretboard and black headstock. Bridge is a Fender System I tremolo. Locking nut just above the "real" nut. Tuners are non-locking with "Fender Japan" on the back.

I love this guitar..... having the ability to switch between single coils and humbuckers is awesome.. the best of both worlds. Wish more guitars were made this way.

Easy guitar to set up on own, already had great action. Pickup height can be adjusted very easily. These guitars are put together very well, all hardware is nice quality, paint is good. Necks are very nice, fret- work is great. Electronics are extremely reliable.

I've been playing since January `77, and have had a whole bunch of different guitars from Fenders to Gibsons. I love this guitar. If this was stolen I would track the dog down who took it and.... I was blessed to find this one... I havent seen another one since. If I cant find one, I might have Fender Custom shop make one for me....
