2002 (I think, haven't had the neck off yet). Black poly, matching headstock. 12" radius EBONY fingerboard. G&L MFD single coil bridge p/u. Duncan Seth Lover humbucker neck p/u. Aprox 8 1/2 - 9 lbs. Med. Jumbo frets. C shaped neck. Not a lot there but covers a lot of tones.

It goes from one end of the spectrum to the other. It took a little getting used to for me. The most wide ranging guitar I've ever owned. Really twangy tele snap to greasy, thick humbucker roar. The volume control and dynamic is very good. Cleans up well. This guitar does the work of two. I think I like it the most with an amp thats got some grind going on more than a pristine clean. To me a stat does that clean thing better than any guitar. This G&L sounds great when the amp is working a little harder. The two types of tone available seem to work together better than I thought they could. Feedback is very controlable. I'ts a very resonant guitar also.

G&L builds their guitars with care. this is my first but I've played others and was always impressed. Everything on this guitar was perfect, EXCEPT, the fret ends were razor sharp. I took care of that in less than an hour but I was just amazed. I think thats why I got it for a really good price. It was uncomfortable to play. The frets were perfect in every detail but the ends. I also think this was a custom order guitar and thats why I was so amazed by the frets. Oh well, worked out in my favor in the end. Like I said everything else was perfect.

If you get to look at a G&L up close you can tell they're as solid as they can be. From experence of other peoples guitars I dont expect any problems.

Its an awsome guitar. Not for everyone but if you always wanted a Fender nocaster, do your self a favor and check one of these out first. I did, and this is the one I decided I wanted. There is also something a little cool about having a guitar you don't see all the time.

Typical Tele style guitar, seth lover hb in the neck G&L tradition in the bridge, alder body mine was quite heavy almost 10 pounds, G&L tuners work well everything well manufactured nothing felt particularly cheap, big chuncky neck feels very similar to the earlier telecasters coming out of the old fender factory, one piece maple neck cut down the middle to accept the truss rod then glued back together makes for a very clean appearence, ridiculusly tight neck joint, NO it doesnit have 5 rocker switches, 3 knobs, push pull pots midi capabilities or of that other superfulous crap, just the basics
Sound

mmmmmmmm hmmmmm very very nice, good clean bluesy tone from the neck and nice tele twang out of bridge, well suited for just about anything, blues and classic rock to rock alt rock stuff, you could probly even get a fair metalish sound out of it with the right pedal configuration, the bridge pu does have the typical 60 cycle hum that all single coils will but it is much much quiter than any fender pickup i've played lately, very naturally bright sounding but muddied up well enough, played it thru a bogner shiva, THD BIvalve and a POS crate 212, all gave passible tone but it really shown thru the THD, wish i could give a 15 in the category great sounding guitar, puts any fender tele to shame

well set up from the factory rumor has it they are pleking their guitars now so no wonder, the neck pocket was a extreamely tight fit very impressive my hat goes off to the guys in the G&L factory, frets were dead on perfect no sharp edges at all again everything seems very high quaility on these things, finish was very very well done great black sheen and velvet smooth neck, again fender you've been put to shame

this guitar will be around for a while with out a doubt very very well put together, strap buttons are big and solid, finish is a thick polyester that will probly withstand all but a nuclear blast, tuners are tight and hold dead on even after some very very agressive bends, hardware is brass and will tarish, could probly use this thing as an oar in a pinch altho i never would i absolutely love this guitar, wouldn't gig without a backup never will string breaks do happen,

G&L doesn't have exactly an epic record on this front seems spoty from what i've read, probly cuz they are all busy building quality instruments and not sitting by the phone, can't give them good or bad feedback on this

G&L makes the best Fender style guitars for the money. This Bluesboy plays better than any Fender Tele I've ever played, including ones that cost twice as much. The Bluesboy is on par with Fender's Custom Shop offerings.

A Tele with a neck humbucker by seymour duncan.
No need to worries about have to swapping pickups later
because it's pretty decent right out of the box.
Mine was a bird eyes maple neck with tinted gun oil.
Very beautiful neck.
Nothing much to say here.
It's not so different from other Tele.

Sounds great.
I can play Incubus to SRV. Very versatile.
Both pickups seems to balanced.
Neck pick up is warm and full.
Bridge SC is twangy like a tele.
I play through a practice Fender Pro jr. amp
have swapped tubes to JJ tesla el84 and Tungsol 12ax7

Action is great from the factory.
Not too high not too low.
Neck was properly install to the body very tight nicely done.
Now let's talk about the finishes.
Shame on you G&L!!!
I've found 4 dust spot in the paint. 3 are really visible!!! My guitar is vintage white color so it's easy to spot.
I have a American Fender Stratocaster in sonic blue and it has flawless paint job.
Even my friend's Peavey Raptor paint was flawless.
G&L better step up in their paint QC.
So before you buy a G&L ... CHECK THE PAINT!!!
Unfortunately I custom order it so there's no way I can check until it arrived at my house.
Very disappointed for a highly value company.
Or maybe I'm just one of those bad luck guy :(

John in the repair service page.
So I did email him about the problem.
Still haven't heard a reply from him yet.

I've been playing for 12 years.
I've just got this guitar yesterday.
I wish I have seen the guitar before I buy so I can check the
overall condition of the guitar. So this is what I get from
internet order. It's not a cheap guitar I expect the quality should be
little bit higher.
Other than the paint problem. It is still a great guitar
I recommend you to try it as an alternative to Fender.
Don't forget to check the paint now that's my tip.

This is the perfect mix for a player who likes Teles and Les Pauls.
The Humbucker (Duncan) and the G&L bridge (MFD) are a great combination. After playing for many years, I have finally come to rely upon just Teles and Les Pauls. They feel and sound the best to me and suit my playing style.

The G&L ASAT is a great guitar and if you do not load it up with options it is a great value. My next purchase will be a G&L ASAT Classic in Butterscotch over ash.

This is a slight revision of my earlier review.
The neck humbucker DOES reproduce that amazing sound I heard in the old Fender model! I just hadn't played with it long enough at the time of review. Incredibly warm and juicy through a good amp. Playing more with the bridge than I thought I would through the high-gain input of the second (thicker & more aggressive) channel, getting some nice saturated hot tele/strat tones. Can get really otherworldly mellodic rhythm tones with an Ebow and some reverb.
Am ordering an LSR Roller Nut to sub in. Nothing wrong at all with the stock nut, I'm a power-blues player mostly and just want all the extra tuning stability possible as I bend strings in almost every lick and passage played. Doing this with my other guitar as well.
And the finish is honeyburst, not honey as I had accidentally stated.
This instrument has me sold--I think I'm a G&L man for life. As good as Anderson as 1/3 the price in my opinion.

Maple neck, rosewood board, transparent honey finish on ash body. Neck humbucker and bridge MFD single-coil. Non-locking tuners. The neck is that nice honey-color the old Fenders have.
Great finish, look, and the rare pickup configuration I wanted make this a solid 9. Came strung with mediums--just what I wanted!

My ideal guitar sound is an ORIGINAL '72 Fender Tele with neck 'bucker. I tried one once at a guitar store when I was a broke college student, and it has the warmest, smoothest, most expansive neck pickup sound ever, "mellow" as I called it. This isn't quite it, but very nice anyway. If I ever find an original '70s Fender Thinline humbucker, I'll swap it in.
As it is, a fabulous guitar. Can do sort of what I wanted with the neck, for rhythm, and the in-between pickup position is GREAT for leads--huge and glassy. The neck humbicker adds richness, lets the wood color and speak in organic tones, while the bridge gives it spank, and a singing, cutting voice. "Sweet" is a good word for this axe through a Vox or Matchless. Pickups deliver the dynamics to master those amps.

My only other electric guitar is a Gibson Blueshawk, and this is everything good the BluesHawk isn't. The Blueshawk does a great strat sound with the Varitone (I mean dead-on strat), and a great 3D scooped, bubbly P90 rhythm with the Varitone off. This does great thick solid-body tones, with warm, soft neck humbucker, and glassy solid lead sounds. It's got a great hot tele twang, but I don't often put it all on the bridge pickup (I like bright, but a tele bridge through a Matchless or Vox is just too much).
I play through a Peavey Valverb for tube reverb, into a Matchless SC30 or Vox AC15-TBRX. I also have a Digitech RP-10 for flanger/chorus/phaser and delay effects when I'm in the mood. This is a great guitar when the only thing between you and your amp is a length of cord, for playing clean or crunchy, or for saturated slide/ebow. When I want effects, it handles them well too. Rhythm (neck pickup) is smooth and wide-sounding, and lead is sweet and cuts through. For what I paid, it's excellent. Strung with mediums. For playing jazz, blues, and alternative, the Bluesboy solidbody and the Gibson BluesHawk are all I need or want.
I'm thinking about buying a second one for backup at shows.

USA-made Tele-style instrument. Like an ASAT Classic but with a Seymour Duncan humbucker (Seth Lover '55N) in the neck (configured like a Tele Custom, although the Tele Custom uses a different kind of humbucker). Has a G&L MFD tele bridge pickup. 3-way selector switch. Alder body, rosewood board. "Vintage White" finish (with matching color headstock) with a 3-ply black-white-black pickguard. The maple neck has the standard "satin" finish, not the high-gloss finish G&L offers as an option. The neck is neither slim nor chunky; it's a moderate "C" profile. Medium-jumbo frets, which I find comfortable (I don't like low vintage frets). Molded case and the G&L Allen wrenches included.
For me, the key feature on this guitar, which I special ordered, is that is has a G&L "#4" neck -- which means that the fretboard radius is 12" (not their standard vintage 7.25") and that the nut width is 1 11/16" (not their standard 1 5/8"). The slightly wider and flatter neck (more like a Gibson) works for me on this instrument because I am using it largely for jazz.
Sound
:

I'm very happy with this instrument. As I said, I ordered it with mostly jazz playing in mind. I wanted to get an Ed Bickert kind of sound, and this instrument (with the proper amp) nails it pretty well. So I am using mostly the neck humbucker through a solid-state amp -- either an Evans with a 15" speaker or an old Roland Cube 60. This guitar gets a very clean, airy, solid sound with that setup. I have it strung with Thomastik-Infeld Bebop 12s (12-50, with an unwound G). Most people would find that to be strangely heavy strings for a Tele, but I like it a lot for the application I am using this instrument for. By the way, I much prefer the solidbody to the semi-hollow or thinline for this style of music -- I like the mids that would get lost if the instrument were semi-hollow.
At the same time, this guitar sounds great for the styles it was evidently designed for. The neck pickup gets a good blues tone that breaks up in a nice way, the bridge pickup (while hotter than a vintage Tele bridge pickup -- it was voiced specifically to combine well with the humbucker) has good Tele "twang," and the in-between sounds are good and nasal-ly. The humbucker is not tremendously high output, which helps account for the great jazz sound this instrument gets. It's a much more refined sound than the Fender Tele Customs or Fat Teles I've played, where the humbucker is just too hot for the kinds of sounds I like.

I was very happy with the guitar as it came from the factory, although I had it set up right away with the T-I Bebop 12s (the guitar came strung with 10s). The frets seem leveled off right and the intonation is good. No complaints. A tip of the hat, by the way, to Mark and Tim of Buffalo Bros. Guitars in Carlsbad, CA, who ordered the instrument for me and set it up to my specs upon its arrival.

I've never actually had to deal with G&L directly, but they've now twice provided me with custom-ordered instruments that met my specs to the letter. Dave McLaren of BBE (G&L's parent company) is pretty good about responding to his customers' questions on the www.guitarsbyleo.com website. I think they have a ten-year warranty on the instrument. Again, I commend Buffalo Bros. Guitars, a major G&L dealer, for their support of their products.

I've been playing 30 years. I own more guitars than I should, mostly purchased over the last three years. I have an ASAT Classic, a few Gibson hollowbodys and semi-hollow instruments. Apart from the amps mentioned above, I have a couple of vintage Fender tube amps. I play a variety of styles of music. I might well get another Bluesboy if something happened to this one. It gives me the exact sound I was looking for.

2002 ASAT Classic Bluesboy. Made in USA (CA). Solid body with tobacco burst finish and natural wood binding on body top. G&L MFD pickup in bridge position and humbucker (Seymour Duncan SH-55) in neck position. Three position blade switch w/ tone and volume knobs. Bridge is standard tele-style. Neck is maple with high gloss finish over hand rubbed gun oil tint. Non-locking Schaler tuners. Large frets. Three layer pick guard (faux tortise shell). Came with G&L molded case.

Sound is fantastic. This guitar yields nice jazz tones (due to the warm humbucker in the neck position) - as well as the expected twang that I wanted from this Tele style guitar. I play this guitar out of a late 60's Fender Twin and enjoy the range of sounds from very clean and warm to crunchy overdrive. The neck is so well joined to the body that it achieves a long and bright sustain that other guitars I've played have failed to achieve.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The finish of this guitar was the first attraction for me. Specifically the neck. G&L uses a unique (Leo Fender Patented) method to insert a truss rod in the neck - which is to saw the neck in half longitudinally, then routing out a cavity for the truss rod. The neck is so expertly put back together that it is nearly impossible to see where this cut occurred. The gun oil tint and high gloss finish on the neck make playing this guitar a pure joy. The body is finished equally well and the natural wood binding is especially nice. I have not found any flaws in this guitar.

I don't play live, but I strongly believe that it would withstand years of playing and traveling. The finish seems extra tough and able to endure lots of abuse. The strap buttons are extra large, to the point that I had to widen my strap to fit it over the buttons. The guitar stays in tune very well. This is a great guitar!

I've been playing for over 25 years and this guitar is so nice to play in just about any style. I also play a 1966 Fender Coronado II and a variety of acoustics. When purchasing, I looked at a lot of Telecasters and the Custom Telecaster comes very close the ASAT Classic Bluesboy, but the finish and outstanding neck drove me to the G&L. The only thing I would like to see on this guitar would be locking tuners and a tremolo bar. If I lost this guitar, I would definitely go out and get another.
If you like Telecasters, try a G&L.
