Tobacco sunburst finish, with rosewood fretboard. Standard pickup configuration for this model.

Sound : 8
I enjoy the sound, and is a nice guitar for rock, blues and country. A bit warmer sounding than any of the fender models I've played. I pounds out the tone when needed. Especially nice on the neck pickup. The country sounds aren't there as expected, but a great blues and rock machine. This guitar is surprisingly heavy for a semi-hollow, and weighs as much as my solid ASAT classic.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Finish is outstanding. Shines beautifully, and looks great. The neck is a bit buzzy as I have noticed with any of the g&l semi-hollows I have played. But it doesn't come through with amplification, and is enjoyable to play. The neck is highly varnished, and can be a bit sticky when you're sweating out tones.

Reliability/Durability : 10
So far I haven't had any problems in this category with any of the G&L's I have owned. Currently I own a Legacy, ASAT Classic, ASAT bass, and a tribute ASAT special in addition to this guitar. They are well made, and seem to stand up to wear.

Overall Rating : 9
I love the looks and tones. Not crazy about the weight, but still very happy overall with the guitar. If you're looking for total country twang, I'd suggest something else, but it rocks for most everything else. I won't ever sell it, and enjoy playing it.

The finish is the semi-transparent honey-blonde that show the huge grain of the swamp ash. This creamy-honey colour takes on hues from any coloured stage lights too, cool. The body is exactly a telecaster with a nifty f-hole above the tortoise shell 3-ply pickguard. The bridge is Tele-style with strings through body. Proprietary G&L tuning heads are Schaeller-like. The neck has 22 Jumbo frets on the rosewood fretboard. The neck base is curly maple. The neck radius resembles my Stratocaster: 7 1/2 inches and the scale is 25 1/2 inches. The headstock is small like a Tele's but it has a slightly different curve, to an added corner, and a smaller bout at top of the head. There are tele-type controls for the stock tele-style pickups, (small chromed neck pickup and standard-looking bridge pickup), and looks to be the ultimate tele-clone. The three-way pickup selector and passive controls allow for choice of neck pickup, neck and bridge combination, and bridge pickup. I only have three guesses to get it right. The pickguard on this ASAT Classic resembles original Tele's with the exception of the curving bout where the Tele's have a straight line--from the controls to the other side of the bridge assembly--this ASAT has a nice cool curve. For me nearly everything about this guitar is cool.

Sound : 10
I am pleased with the sound of this guitar. As I tell my friends, "She sings in the high notes and growls in the bottom ones." Our band has played community-style dances for 30 years. We mix up our playlist with country, country-rock, rockabilly, rhythm and blues, rock and roll and straight rock. The tele-style pickups have lots of power. The neck pickup has a jazz tone. The neck and bridge combination has a blues tone. The bridge pickup is great for solos of all types. I've been using light strings from D'Addario. I play through a TubeWorks RT-2100 (100 watts) into two 12" Celestion Lead-80s. I go for a clean tone, but will sometimes use a Boss Overdrive for a nice, extra-lite, creamy breakup.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
I got this guitar used. It's a post 1997, I think, as it has the CLxxxxxx serial number. I liked the action right away. The person who sold me the axe said, "It has the mojo." He's right. It has 22 jumbo frets and low action. It also has a brass nut. My friend owned the studio so he set it up fine. The only thing I noticed about his setup is that he put a small piece of mahogany block on each side of the strings between both E-string saddles and the edge of the plate unit. I'm guessing he did that to adequately align both E-strings to the edge of the neck. I've had no problems with this adjustment. The string action with big frets makes this a very fast neck. Grease. Mojo. The swamp ash top is perfectly bookmatched. The only quirk this guitar has is the jack output has a loose connection so that my signal will cut out when I make certain moves. The plug fit is sloppy. I run my patch cord through my strap loop and try to keep pressure on the output plug. Plays fine 99 percent of the time.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This is a solid guitar with good wood and hardware except for the cheezy output jack. The non-locking tuning heads have G&L on them but they feel like Schaeller's--they hold tuning well. The neck finish on the curly maple is slick. The honey-blonde finish on the body looks impermeable. I keep the stock strap buttons as my Fender(TM) strap fits awefully tight. This is a dependable guitar and I have played it without a backup cuz I play not far from home. Normally, I keep a backup guitar just because I know anything can happen to my axe. My candy apple red 1991 Strat Elite has become the backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Since I got it used, it had no warranty. Heck, it din't even come with a G&L case, sigh. I've not had to deal with the dealer so for me this is not an issue right now.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I normally practice on acoustic steel strings: J-45 (1956), and Fender F-25 (beater). My modified Jazzmaster is comfortable to practice on, too. I've been playing in bands and doing solos, duos and power trios for 35 years. I've mainly used Strats for the whammy bar as well as the sound, of course. I am a closet jazz student, and recently I wanted to study blues and I wanted a semi-hollow, hard-tail guitar with a rosewood fretboard; and the Great Spirit lead me to the right place at the right time. Now I can run scales with Warren Nunes, and bend them strings to the wails of Muddy Waters. I'm thankful for what I have.

The G&L classic semi hollow is a semi hollow telecaster with these features:
body:swamp ash neck:maple fretboard:22 frets (fender tele scale),rosewood bridge:very good;it's a vintage tele bridge with brass saddles, but the strings pass through the body.pickups:2 fullertone magnetic field single coils
kluson style tuning machines,marked G&L
I don't know the finish proper name,I'd call it "translucent blonde".
The guitar is very well made, with hi quality components.
About the hollow body:it's not like a thinline,it's more like an ES 335,very resonant.definetly a super weight instrument!

Sound : 9
Ok I have to say that all good gtrs sound good unplugged, and this one does:is a very resonant guitar.Because of the body and construction the sound is on the bright side, very acoustically sounding.Another important thing is that the srings volume is very well balanced and if you play in the upper register the sound is still thick (a lot of gtrs do the opposite). Now we can move to the "electrified test".I tried this gtr with my twin reverb (a '72) a marshall jcm 2000 tsl,and a vox ac 30,a new one with blue alnico speakers. Then I hooked my stomp box overdrives:a voodoo lab sparkle drive, a rat and a keeley TS 808.I've got to say that this gtr is a stunning instrument. The clean sound is sweet and resonant.the instrument is very sensitive and you can go from clean sound to a slightly overdrive (if you got a good tube amp especially) with your fingers or pick attack. As mentioned before you can hear all the strings well balanced if you do chord solos and the hollow body gives a very acoustic character. You can achieve danny gatton's chicken picking and really good jazz sounds at the same time. This is because the volume and tone works in a very musical way.the pickup noise is less than a tele.the overdiven sounds are also very good and this instrument will let you play the blues!the sound is bright and full at the same time and if you tweak the tone/volume it darkens.surely a very versatile instrument.the pickups are hotter than the fender tele, but the sound is not darker, like the duncan antiquity for example. It has the tele sound, but more acoustic, resonant and I say more "evil".in fact if you plug it in a marshall you can get very good distorted timbres, I think about tom morello or jeff beck.If you play with an overdrive you can get some very good keith richard's crunch or robben ford sound (even with single coils). In my opinion the better sounds are clean tone and smooth overdrive, but you can do rock stuff too, keep it in your mind. The guitar is very musical and has a lot of character.it's awesome with slide.I gig professionally and I carry this gtr,a les paul and a 335 with me.every instument has its own character and this is a great guitar.there should be something important if I carry those 3 in studio.Try this instrument it's one of the better sounding gtrs I have ever played, and I played even vintage ones.Good work G&L
I don't give a 10 because perfection doesn't exist,we live on earth!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I don't care about factory set up;it changes from one gtr to another,so you can play 2 G&Ls and one could have a better setting.
As reported by someone on this site the jack plug is too big for standard cables,I don't know why.Anyway this is not important, you could change it.I did it. The only "defect" of this dream is that is not well balanced, maybe because of the super light body.

Reliability/Durability : 8
I don't understand why so many people say "this gtr is too beautiful for live playin' and if I found a scratch on it after the show I commit suicide!"come on,If you buy a guitar you must play it when you want!.The gtr is very well made and can last like every good instrument can.Gigging without a backup is a risk, and I do only when the gig is not a big one.The biggest problem is to change the strings,it's surely not fast(this is the reason of my "8" instead of "9"),so I'm thinking about replacing the tuning machines with sperzel locking, for a quick pit stop.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I don't know anything about it

Overall Rating : 9
I,ve been playin for 14 years.I play professionally and I'm a musician (hope a good one ,I'm workin on it every day).If this was stolen I'll surely buy an another one. This guitar replaced my tele (a fender usa vintage reissue, great guitar too!)because I can get more sounds from it,and I can achieve the traditional tele sound and feeling at the same time. This is basically a tele, not an another guitar, but it's the G&L interpretation of the tele, this is the point!e mail me if you want.bye have good gigs!

I'm not sure of the age of this guitar - I'm the third owner. It's a beautiful Blonde with maple neck + rosewood fretboard. The original pickups were swapped out by a previous owner and it now has some Fralins (I'm not sure which ones, but they're pretty hot) and the guitar sound wonderful! The semi-hollowness of this guitar gives it a big, imposing tone. The only problem with it is it is slightly neck-heavy, which can get tiring after a couple of hours. I had a luthier insert a brass wheight inside just behind the control cavity and now it's ballanced perfectly. 25.5" scale, tele-style.

Because it is a tele-style guitar there aren't many options, which is exactly why I like it, so I'll give it a ten.

Sound : 10
It's a blues machine, this thing. The neck pickup sounds large and present; with a slight turn of the tone knob it does an acceptible jazz tone. The rear pickup sounds close to the traditional tele sound, but doesn't have that microphonic "ice pick" thing going on, thank goodness.

I play this through my Allen Old Flame, Allen Accomplice, and an Allen 5E3, plus an amp I built. (I can't say enough good things about David Allen's amps - talk about enlightened circuits!) The ASAT through the Allens is amazing - it sounds exactly how I envision the tone in my head: Clear, full and with enough punch to stay in any mix. I can't imagine a guitar sounding any better. Different, but not better.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Like I said, I'm the third owner so I have no idea about factory set-up. But the ASAT made it to me with a very comfy action, set up with 10's and playing like butter. The finish is without fault, the pickups are great, the grain is beautiful, and the electronics are fine.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This guitar plays well when in public - it stays in tune for long periods, wears well (now that I added counter-ballance), sounds exactly the way I want, and has the best strap-buttons I've encountered. I depend on this guitar four nights a week and it hasn't let me down yet. I always carry a backup (G&L ASAT Bluesboy) but haven't yet needed it. (Some advice to those just starting their gigging-life - Always Have A Backup On Hand! If you have a backup you'll probably never need it; if you don't bring a backup your gear will know and will crap-out on you. No Kidding.)

Customer Support : 8
I needed a new input jack for the guitar (it seems that most of the ASATs have a rather unique input jack - it's a self-contained, threaded cylander, and they don't work very well as their springs have very little movement, and thus very little pressure to keep your cable's jack in contact. Great idea on paper, but in reality they don't work reliably.) so I had my local music store order me two of them. I went into great detail about the type of jack I needed, and was there when the jacks were ordered, so I know they gave G&L the right info, but what they sent were two normal input jacks, and charged me $8.00 EACH! I took them so my local music store wouldn't be stuck with them, but GEEEZ! So I'm not too impressed with their customer support, but it's also my only experience with them, so who knows. I'll give them the benefit of doubt and give them an 8. (They do make one hell of a guitar after all.)

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for three decades. I've owned SO many guitars I don't remember them all, but all top-of-the-line (Fenders, Gibsons, Gretch... mostly Fenders) and this ASAT is tied with my strat for best ever guitar. Like I've mentioned in the review, this guitar sounds exactly the way I've always wanted a tele to sound, and that, I believe, is rare. Overall I have to give it a 10. I'd heartily recommend one to anybody looking for a more "modern" tele.

2001 U.S. made ASAT Classic semi-hollow with f-hole,ala fender thinline. Swamp ash body with wood binding, and a maple neck with ebony fretboard. Tansparent red finish, with 3 way selector, volume and tone pot, traditional vintage tele pickup configuration. Stock G&L pickups,G&L non-locking tuners, with white 3 ply pickgaurd. G&L molded case included. Tele style bridge with 6 brass saddles, through body style. Standard neck with satin finish and wide frets.

Sound : 9
Perfect for blues, classic rock, jazz, country. Not meant as a heavy metal type guitar yet sounds suprisingly good for over the top metal.
Sounds great through 60's fender deluxe reverb, and carvin quad x preamp. Single coil pickups are fairly quiet even when going through high gain amps. A little noisier then the 60's goldtop les paul but brighter and more defined sounding. Not sure if I lucked out or they all sound this great. Amazing depth and tonal range. Not to shrill,
with sweet highs and even bottom end with out being boomy. Band mates think its sweet looking and sounding.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Bought it used in excellent condition. Neck was slightly out of alignment in neck pocket with slightly too much relief. Easily fixed.
Slight fret buzz at 12th fret disappeared when neck was teaked. Action set to fender factory specs ie. 1/16" from top of fret to bottom of string at 17th fret. Plays very well and fast now. Looks like the fretboard edge was not perfectly squared off on the low e side around the 15th through to the 19th fret. Does not affect playability, more of a cosmetic thing. Fret work is good ,not great. Acceptable, not great filing job. All hard ware is excellent and functions well. No problems with input jack as reported by others. Saddle and nut are very good. Pick ups are balanced just right, even though I love to tweak, I'm not gonna touch them. String response is even. Finsh is perfect. Looks amazing in full sunlight, no defects.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This guitar could withstand live playing, however its just too pretty and sweet sounding to do that to it. I have a great road guitar which I would rather go out with even though the G&L is sweeter and lighter. Oh yeah only 7lbs 2 ounces. After a 4 hour gig greatly appreciated. Finish will hold up with proper care. Strap buttons are better than most, I am planning to install straplocks. Do that with all my guitars anyway. Would totally cut a gig without a backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion
The Store I bought it from offered to cover the warranty for the remaining 7 years. Scotts Guitars in Alabama. Very ethical and honest person. Don't know what G&L is like have never dealt with them.

Overall Rating : 9
Been playing for 25 years, last 5 as a guitarist for a national touring show band. I would definitely buy this guitar again if it had to be replaced. This instrument plays and sounds wonderful. It can almost get the Roy Buchanan tone yet it is a semi-hollow. I was going to switch out the bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan hot tele stack, but I like the stock pickup so I'll probably hold off. My only suggestion to G&L would be to leave a little more room between the pick up selector switch and the volume pot. It smoked the Fender tele thinline reissues I played, and was only slightly more. I like these pickups (vinage tele configuration) as opposed to the larger G&L ones that superficially resemble p-90s. They sound more boxy to my ears, though some people swear by them and like the higher output. Once again I'd like to state that I'm not sure if I lucked out and got a great one or if they're all this good. This ones a keeper.

This US made guitar was bought 2nd hand. I was shopin g for a jazz hollow body that had fast action and sound! This 2001 model had flat wound strings on it, size 12-52! It has 2 pickups. The body is a transparent maple with a one piece ash maple neck under a gun oil finish.

Sound : 10
I use the guitar only for jazz and play it through a Polytone amp. The voice chambers, flat wound strings(12-52),front pickup combine to deliver an amazing jazz sound. I love the tone...recently did a jazz gig...guitar and standup bass...the bass player was amazed at the great tone! The chords are clear...I like to hear the voicing, especially on altered chords. Other than my Johnny Smith, I have not heard that clarity on the Gibson ES175 as well as the 175 copies out there. Sustain is very good as well.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I raised the action a bit when I bought it,and lowered the rear pickup, but other than that it needs no work yet. The action is very smooth and solid. I like to attack the string for single note playing, and use a softer touch for chord melody. I fine the G&L responsive. When I attach...really accent a note, it sounds louder, but does not rattle or break up0 the sound. This was important to me as a kind of Pat Martino player.

Reliability/Durability : 10
The guitar is reliable...but I prefer to have a backup on all gigs. Well made axe.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Have not needed customer support.

Overall Rating : 10
I started as a folk/rock player in 1962(12 yrs old). I now play mostly jazz, in a duo/trio setting and sometimes solo a la Joe Pass. Other than that I play in our worship band in a very large church. I usually play my strat for a rock sound, a classical for the mellow solos and Bach, and my G&L when they want a George Benson type sound. I like the sound and action better that the Gibson ES175...I've had a couple..I think they are over-rated. I have owned a Gibson Johnny Smith, which I would like back some day...great guitar! Overall the G&L is an awesome guitar for my needs.

This one is a 2000 or so, natural wood, mother of bowling ball pickguard with a curly maple neck and neck binding with a rosewood fingerboard. It has the std two G&L single coils. It came with a case.
Made in USA of course. I don't rate features- those you can see for yourself.

Sound : 10
I know one is not supposed to gush too much on these forums, but this thing sounds great. It has the twang and the resonance that you get from a semihollow (the f-holes aren't just for show). It sounds good at all volumes, and most importantly, it sounds great not plugged in, which is the best indication of the mquality of the materials and owrkmanship.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Overall, this thing feels solid and as well put together as could be. The wood looks great, the neck binding is beautiful, and I love the tuners. The action is not quite as nice as I would like. My previous G&L's have been adjustable to any darn action you wanted without a problem. This one doesn't tolerate a low action, though that's fine for me, because I hate low actions (I was just playing with it one day). I suspect a real luthier could have set the thing up better.
No flaws at all.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This thing is as sturdy as a baseball bat. The finish is solid. I played probably 300-400 gigs with my previous G&L, and other than wearing the frets out, that thing was looks no worse for the wear. This one feels the same.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never had to deal with the company directly.

Overall Rating : 10
My background- I played pretty heavily (4-5 times per week) at full volume in 1-5 hour shows (no breaks, ever) fulltime. I am no longer playing professionally. I would definitely buy another one if it were lost. . .. I will probably accumulate a few more G&L's in my lifetime, and I will never sell one - seriously.

Features : 9
Fender Telecaster style guitar. Made in Fullerton, CA, USA.
The main feature for me is that fact that it is a hollow body telecaster guitar, and that it is a supposed quality guitar. Mine has a premium finish, the clear blonde option which in my opinion is and was the best color that a telecaster could ever come in. You can see the wood grain through the blonde finish, but not too too much, it is just right. Mine also has the gun-oil bird's eye maple neck option with rosewood fingerboard. The boys at G&L really hit the jackpot with their gun-oil vintage maple necks, they are beautiful, classy and smooth.

I guess the brass bridge pole pieces are a plus, but I could go for a graphite nut. That's for sure. No vibrato, no humbuckers on this thing, thank you. Non-locking tuners, but I know first hand that G&L guitars are instruments that can keep their tuning. I am not sure which neck mine is, but it doesn't feel like the vintage radius. I like the neck, especially the smooth bird's eye maple. Mine also came with a brilliant tolex G&G case which is a very nice case as far as cases go. 9 because this isn't a guitar that you buy for the features, but the features are still very nice.

Sound : 10
This guitar doesn't necessarily "fit" my music style, however, that is why I like it. Ladies and gentlemen if you are reading this post, and for whatever reason believe that some guitar-playing-styles are weird then you should move on to another review. I play hard, I play real, I play to destroy, I play the destruction. Think of a combination of Thurston Moore/Tom Morello/Kevin Shields/Jimi Hendrix.
</P>
I use an assorted hodge-podge of fuzz and distortion pedals. I like to switch distortion pedals based on the needs of a particular song or mood. I also like to pump a healthy dose of vintage memory man analog delay into my amp and I also have a penchant for top of the line, vintage, new and customized wahs. I use whatever amp is at hand, that goes back to my tone coment -- if you can't make an amp sound good then you don't know how to play. My favorite amps, however, are smaller fender or vox tube amps, Roland JC-120's and I also like to play through bass amps.

I don't really believe in true signal or natural guitar tone or whatever. Every time you read a review on this site by someone who either complains about a pedal sucking their tone or about a single coil hum clearly doesn't understand what tone is all about. I use a tone because that tone is there. If you don't like your tone, then you should to go back to the first time you started playing a guitar and start all over again. I mean get your sound right and love it, don't complain about it. So let's get back to this guitar. This guitar begs to be played. It has a deep bassy growl that is at the same time bright and full. I wish it had a little more extreme range of tonal capabilities. I like my sound to have an intense amount of bass and an excruciating amount of treble. However, the sincere glassiness of this guitar is a huge turn for me. I still think that the guitar's sound could be perfected with some custom electronics. I need to look into the possibilities of changing the pots or something. The pickups are hot, but they are not as telecaster-like as I thought they would be. This guitar can do the jingle-jangle bouncy thing but it has a lot more to give then that.

Also, the hollow body really only changes the weight and sustain of this guitar. I don't think that this guitar's hollowbodyness can compare with other larger-sized hollow bodies that I have played such as Epiphone Casinos, Gibson ES-225 or Fender Corronado's

I like hollowbody guitars, however, because they are broad and bright and hopefully punchy throughout the frequency spectrum. I like a decent amount of sparkle in my guitar sound. The tone controls don't change the sound of the guitar that much, especially when you are using a lot of distortion, however when you have your tubes hot and amp pushed and the guitar plugged straight in - the tone controls can really change the frequency range of the guitar's pickups.

I give this guitar a 10 for sound because it is a very proud guitar that just begs to be played. It wants to be heard and for that I have to give it a 10.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
All good. I wanted to get a G&L because they do a good job with craftmanship and quality. For some reason they give me a 10 year warranty, I am not sure why I need a warranty. I expect that this guitar will be fine and that the only reason why may need an adjustment is because I played the hell out of it. The neck fits clean, and their are no flaws on it all. It is really a 100% guitar, and I would expect no less from G&L.

I have to give this guitar a 10 because when I have it strapped on and put in the right place under my armpit, it just feels absolutely amazing. It is quite a magical instrument as long as it is plugged and being lovingly strummed.

This is the first factory fresh guitar that I have bought in about 10 years. I have bought many a vintage, smashed-out, junky guitar. This is my first brand new one. And I am just so excited about my future with this instrument. When i see the neck and body I see an instrument that is going to get broken in by me and only me.
I also suffer from GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome) and I bought this guitar in an effort to cure myself (most people who truly suffer from GAS believe that they can cure themselves with just one more guitar) but honestly I think this guitar will the my main guitar for awhile, at least until it gets some wear and tear on it.
I will depend on this guitar 100% to last longer then I will. I could never gig without a backup because I use about 6 different tunings to play so I need to have more then one guitar handy at all times. I look forward to wearing through the finish, because we all know that nicely worn finish is better then brand new finish.

dependable = 10 = rock solid

I would hope that G&L are very nice people. I don't plan to deal with them anytime soon, so I just wish them all the best in their future and business. Peace to G&L and a moment of silence for Leo Fender. ----------

OK, overall I think this guitar is a sturdy mutherf*cker that needs to be played and needs to be heard. I have a continually changing number of instruments which has been gutted or stripped or rotated or put together or broken. This guitar is my new thing, as you can tell. I like the fact that G&L guitars are used by traditional guitarists who play in Nashville or something. I like to play noise guitar, I like to use drum sticks as picks, and stick rubber bands and paper clips in the strings and I like to have a relationship with instruments where neither of us know what the hell we are going to do next. I like the weight of this guitar and I love the feel of it. It also looks really dam good for a brand new guitar. Down the road I would like do something to help the tone, perhaps customize the electronics in some way to add more treble. I want this guitar to be a treble monster, but still have a precise bottom end. I have played guitar for 10 years and have owned and sold many guitars, this is a guitar that I will keep and that means I lot.

I also like to think that this guitar will mature into a very attractive instrument much in the same way that fender's from the 50's,60's,70's have. When I first got the guitar I thought that it was too nice for me, or that it was not worth the price - but as I have played it and done different things with it I can see that it will be a very important part of my guitarmy. It is a very capable strummer. I rate guitars based on their strumming quality or solo quality. This guitar is definitely a strummer. This is a nice guitar and I am proud to strap it on and play the Sh** Out if It.

1997 ASAT Classic hollowbody with f-hole. Ash body honeyburst finish, very sexy. Pearloid pickgaurd, 2 pup's, tone, volume, 3 way switch, std tele config. maple neck, rosewood fretboard, 12" radius, non-locking tuners. Very plain in features but thats what I like.

Sound : 10
Sound is soooooooooo sweet. I actually was looking to buy a tele as well. This guitar is so much more tele than tele. As it should be I guess. My favorite is the neck or neck/bridge combo. Very warm sounds with lots of tone. Covers blues and Jazz very well and will handle some rock and roll. These pups are amazing hot.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
I bought this guitar used and found the action a little high. The shop I bought it at had the tech work it over a bit. Lowered the action nicely. Not crazy about the chrome bridge saddles but will do for now till I find better replacements

Reliability/Durability : 9
I would easily gig without backup, not just because I don't have a backup but because this is a quality instrument.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Don't anticipate problems, if so the dealer will take care of me. Always has.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for a long time. Mostly acoustics. Also play bass and own several guitars. I got a great deal on this guitar and would definitely replace it if lost or stolen. The hollowbody with f-hole gives the sound a very unique character. I am a worship leader at our church and usually play my acoustics, but more and more I will pull the ASAT out because of it's versatility. I will get another ASAT but with two humbucker configuration.

Early 2000 Ash, transparent orange. No f-hole. Creme white top binding and pearloid pickguard. Switched out stock p/ups (which were very good) to Rio Grande Tallboys (which are slightly better/different with less output). Graphite nut. Everything else is standard.

Sound : 10
Used through a M/B Reverb Rocket and a POD. Play mostly original stuff for fun with friends. Primary style is country/folk/gospel/rock'n roll/blues. This guitar has a depth and richness of character like a classic instrument. On neck, bridge or middle position this guitar sounds lush, deep and beautiful. It plays wonderfully, and I find myself playing above my skill level(inspired) often. Not a perfect instrument, but an excellent instrument for slightly under $1000.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Only substantial flaw is the cord jack cuts off occassionally. I have heard of this complaint with G&L's before- you'd think they'd remedy the problem @ the factory. I have not contacted them about this as it seldom occurs and I'm not playing out anywhere at this time.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Appears to be a solid, well made guitar minus the jack.

I spent over one year looking/saving for a Tele. I would say you would be hard pressed to find a better made, better sounding Tele style guitar for less than $1000.

2,ooo hollow body tele w. 2 single coils, 1 vol., 1 tone, matchbox bridge, copper saddles, 3 way switch, gun oiled satin finish neck, ash body, sunburst finish.

I play blues and its great. I did alot of comparing and this thing creates an amazing tone palate with my amp, a Tech 21 Trademark 60. The real beauty of it, in my view is the hollow body sound, especially in the neck (warm, deep, woody) and the changes you get when you roll back the volume and tone knobs. It cleans up and warms up very nicely, giving you a wide variety of tone possibilities. The Trademark 60 also adds to it by giving you a Fender and Marshall channel. The bridge does crunch well, while the middle is bright and bell like with clear highs and warm lows. And the neck, as I said, is deep and warm and overdrives just a bit when you push it. Its sweet. I'm still getting use to the matchbox bridge, and it does feed back if I'm not careful with it. But those are minor problems compared to the bright, articulate, woody sound it gives me.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 5
My only problem was with the neck. After about a week, I discovered that the neck was indented along the high E string edge at about the fourth to eigth frets. My high E kept slipping off the edge of the neck, and my guitar tech. spotted the problem immediately. The good news is that I sent it back to G&L and they replaced the neck and got it back to me in 19 days. Problem solved. Now it plays as great as it looks. I'm very happy with this instrument despite the inconvenience of being without it for awhile. Hell, I had to go back to playing a strat and I realized what a totally superior instrument this is. I couldn't wait to get it back. Everything else is top drawer.

Reliability/Durability : 10
It seems built to last. I have no worries about it. Yes, I do gig without a backup most of the time, though I shouldn't. So far, no problems.

Customer Support : 10
I sent it in and got it back in less than 3 weeks. During that time I talked to them by phone several times. They were on the spot and did the job right without any hassles.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing a long time, off and on. Blues and rock the past few years. I run the G&L straight into the Trademark 60 (which has its own boost, channel switching, effects loop, fender and marshall channels, etc.) with a cry baby wah and an eq in the effects loop to shape the marshall channel with some added highs. I get alot of variety with a minimum of tweeking, mostly just footswitching and using the guitar's volume and tone knobs. I'm very happy with this set up.

Year 2000, USA made, Natural/Satin finish. Ash body, chambered (no f-hole). Rosewood neck, 12" radius, soft V.

Standard Telecaster wiring, with the ASAT Classic pickups. Non-locking tuners. Came with a hard shell case.

I give it an 8 because an ASAT is about as plain an electric guitar as you can buy. Half the reason for buying it is that it HAS no features.

Sound : 10
I bought it for a blues gig. It sounds great there, and also sounds great for my pseudo-jazz playing.

I use it with a Boss Blues Driver, through a variety of old Fender amps.

It's a great Tele sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
The guitar is very well made, and it is certainly beautiful. The neck fit is snug. The pickguard was a bit misaligned.

I've had to drop about $300 in fret work for it, though (NYC prices)--the guitar frets out all over the place. When I bought it, I noticed this but thought I'd be able to fix it with a setup. No dice. The guitar plays very well, but even after a fret grind by a good luthier there are three spots on the neck (9th fret, 14th fret, 16th fret) that choke out all the way across.

The finish is beautifully done.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Once I get the fret problem worked out, I've got little doubt this guitar will be superb. No backups needed--I change strings before a gig, and don't usually break them.

Customer Support : No Opinion
If I can't fix the neck, I'll ask them for a replacement. I hope they're decent people.

Overall Rating : 7
The guitar sounds great, looks great, and hopefully will play great in another week. I compared it to about a dozen Fender Telecasters (which is what I originally set out to buy) and there was no comparison. A friends MIM Tele, however, doesn't fret out anywhere.

The dealer was not much help, but I knew that going in. "Caveat emptor" is the order of the day with the stores on 48th Street.

I wish I'd bought the damned thing from Indoor Storm. They'd have made sure it was right before it was shipped.

1999 ASAT Classic Semi-hollow w/single F-hole, made in the USA, bookmatched ash body, honeyburst finish, soft v-neck, 12" radius maple neck (some birdseye), rosewood fretboard, medium jumbo frets, two pickups, tortoise pickguard, one tone, one volume, pup selector switch, brass 6-saddle ashtray bridge, locking tuners, basic Tele configuration. Custom ordered through Indoor Storm who employs knowlegable people who understand the value and quality offered by G&L.

Sound : 9
You can get everything from country twang, blues and classic rock to woody jazz tones. The bridge pup gives you a hot Tele tone, blend the two and you can get some great rock and blues tones, the neck pup is good for either blues or jazz. The pups are really hot and you can get a lot of variety for a two pickup guitar. The single coils are relatively quiet. The brass saddles and string through body design give fairly good sustain.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This is one area where G&L should be proud of their work and my rating of "10" is accurate. Anyone who's ever owned a G&L (I've owned two, the ASAT and a Fullerton), will tell you how well these guitars are made. I had it set up for 10's by the store where it was purchased but they didn't have to do much. The pups were adjusted properly and the intonation was right on. The ash top, back and sides are loaded with grain and bookmatched perfectly. The honeyburst finish is just incredible. The satin finish neck is smooth and easy to play. Fret were dressed as well as any Custom Shop guitar. All hardware appears to be first rate. The neck pocket fits perfectly...I've never seen one that fits this well. It's relatively light which is great for long sessions.

Reliability/Durability : 9
G&L guitars all seem to be built to last a lifetime. My ASAT is no exception. Would I gig without a backup...no, because anything can happen. Is it built well enough to gig without a backup? It's built better than most I've seen or played. G&L uses large strap buttons but I replaced them with strap locks as I always do.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Thankfully, I've never had to deal with G&L which says a lot for their build quality. My ASAT was custom ordered from Indoor Storm and G&L selected the finest ash for the body and everything was exactly as ordered so I don't have any doubts about their committment to the buyers. It came with a 10 year warranty.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for over 30 years and I've had many guitars but none that matches the quality of the ASAT. Leo Fender built a great guitar (Tele) then he and George Fullerton improved on the design and quality with the ASAT. It sounds great through a Class "A" tube amp. I sold my G&L Fullerton to buy this one because I wanted the woody, semi-hollow sound and even though the Fullerton was a real stunner, the ASAT is better for my style of play. I have various other guitars, amps and basses but, this one is my favorite. If it were stolen I'd definitely order another one without hesitation.
