My G&L ASAT Jr was made 9/30/98 in the good ol'USA.Like others said the Jr has a different sound.Mine is number 67 of 250 produced. The mahogany everthing and made to look like Gibson makes me wonder if G&L are out ideas at that time. This guitar sounds and plays like my Gibson SG,which is not a bad thing.Everthing about this guitar is cool.the one thing I noticed is how light and fragile this thing feels.

Sound : 8
The sound is great if you play clean or dirty. The amp I use is a Line 6 Spider2 2x12 combo and the guitar sounds sweet when played through this amp.The pups are a little darker than a strats pups, like a p-90 sound when distorded.

Action, Fit, & Finish : No Opinion
Everthing was ok with the exception of the tune-o-matic bridge, which is out of alignment with the routing job done.I can live with that.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion

Customer Support : 8
THe warranty is the best.10 years G&L give you with the exception of normal wear and tear. With the exception of the bridge work everything about this guitar is dead on great.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I have to many guitars to list.If somebody stole it it would not be replaced cause there are not to many of these guitars in canada,I checked with G&L and they stated that this guitar was for USA only.THere is about a dozen or so in canada. Also if anybody tries to sell theirs, good luck.

U.S.A. made, 22 frets on an ebony fretboard over a mahogany neck, semi hollow mahogany body, no "f" holes, 2 G&L pickups with a three way switch, single volume and tone. Looks like a Heavy polyurethane finish over the red stained body and neck, not what I would prefer on the neck but it is tough, mine took a fairly large stage dive with only a small scratch on the back. Came with a tolex covered hardboard "vintage" case, my less expensive G&L's came with a more robust SKB-type case. What gives? Chrome stop tailpiece, tune-O-matic bridge, chrome non-locking tuners. Oh yeah, it also came with a certificate of something or other. Good solid construction, nice frets, good-average hardware.

Sound : 10
The Asat standard single coils, (they just look like P-90's) work well with the mahogany neck and body. They have a nice fat sound without the snarl of P-90's, a more even sound without the midrange honk. Make s it a little easier to get different sounds with amp tweaking. Both pickups together with the tone rolled off a little gets a great jazz sound. Bridge pickup full up into a distorted amp gets a nice angus rhythm sound. I haven't really noticed much hollow body vibe from the guitar other than a mellowing of the single coil slice which I really like. A really nice collection of parts, everything works well together to further the sound, which is definitely not tele-like. I am getting a lot of static noise from the pickguard when I strum rhythm, I don't know if this is a guitar flaw or not.

when I bought the guitar it had been hanging on the wall for almost two years. the salesman said many people had played and commented favourably on the guitar but couldn't cut the price ($1,800 Cdn), for a bolt-on, no name brand guitar. When I picked it up I played it accoustically and bought it, without plugging it into an amp. I assume d that the set-up was done by the store. The large frets are very well done, crowned, polished and even. All of the routs are sanded and finished, including the pickup surrounds and the bridge surround, places you can't see. I didn't notice any flaws on the guitar when I bought it, but I'm not that fussy either. It plays well but suffers from the same high register anguish of any tele style guitar, i.e. you have to have big hands to reach anything above the 19th fret.

Reliability/Durability : 9
When I first brought the guitar home I didn't think it would survive gigging because it is so light, it felt delicate. And because it was a major purchase for me I decided to use it only at home. I found out that it is tougher than it feels when it fell approximately four feet onto a hard (thin carpet over concrete) floor with a group of other guitars on the same stand. It may have been a fluke but the G&L survived with the least amount of damage. A Guild Starfire lost its head in the same incident. The Asat Jr. has been gigging ever since, about six months, without a whimper. The finish is still thick and relatively scratch free and looks as if it has a long life ahead of it. However I would never gig without a backup guitar, just because you never know. The only problem I have had is with the input jack cutting out but this may have happened in the great fall.

This and all G&Ls come with a ten year warranty. This is my fourth G&L and I have never had to contact the factory so I can't really comment on their customer relations.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing seriously about ten years and own several other guitars by large and small manufacturers. G&Ls are well made instruments that look like fenders but definitely have their own thing going. I find them to be smoother than fenders, they feel like someONE made them. The Asat Jr. is supposed to be a custom instrument but it's over all construction is the same as my other G&Ls. This is not a bad thing. Mine is a relatively early model (#10 of 250) so I don't know if the quality held up over the production run (Approx 2 years). This is a solid, well built, lightweight, versatile guitar that I would never intentionally part with. The only thing I wish it had would be individual volume controls for each pickup. But I can live with it as it is. Thanks G&L., well done.

Purchased in 1999. Made in USA, Semihollow Tele style mahogany body, G&L pups, dressed up to look like an old single cutaway Les Paul Jr. I do like the concept and overall attempted look.

Sound : 7
My preferences are Jazz and Blues. I play through a Fender Deluxe Reverb and a Johnson JM60 with J112 extension speaker (this allows the full 120W). After reading all of the early reviews about how fantastic this guitar sounded, I was very let down. I was able to emulate most of the Jr's tones on my Z3 (an extremely sterile sounding guitar) by adjusting the tone setting. This wasn't a bad guitar, it just sounded rather average to me.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
The set-up was good, although I believe the vendor I purchased it from, Indoor Storm, had performed a set-up prior to shipping the guitar. The top was actually a little crappy looking with several large black grain streaks in it which looked like someone had splashed gear oil onto the wood. Compared to the Z3 I had, which had a perfect bookmatched top (looked like a one piece body) the Jr was not even in the same category. The fit and finish seemed alright, but they could have chosen a nicer piece of wood for the top. The controls all seemed to work fine but I have no confidence that the jack would last more than a month or two with light use (my Z3 and ASAT semihollow both had jacks crap out in less than two months). The guitar has a 12 inch (?) radius fretboard that I could not get used to, my hand would ache after just a short time playing. Also for some reason, the guitar felt very stiff to play (with 10s on it).

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
I would assume this guitar would handle live gigs just fine. I presume the finish was some form of Poly, so I would guess it should last fairly well. I ended up returning this guitar, so I can't report on how well it has been holding up but based upon my two other G&Ls (other than two jacks going bad, some badly bent pup screws and a pickguard warping) they have held up fairly well.

Customer Support : 4
I had to deal with G&L for two issues.

ONE, the jack on my Z3 went bad within a few weeks and I needed a replacement. After about a dozen calls, cut-offs and transfers, I finally spoke to someone who promptly sent me a complete jack assembly (incl. wires and felt washer). He did disuade me from shipping them the guitar for repair, since he felt I could save the shipping costs and this would be an easy fix (this was not necessarily true - a reverse reamer or easy out tool is required).

TWO, my semihollow had very badly bent pup screws. These were bent so bad, that attempting to adjust the pup height would jam the pups into the cutout in the pickguard. After going through the phone gauntlet again, they agreed to ship me the screws. It cost about $12.00 shipping and handling (they would not even consider just slipping them into an envelope and mailing them). However, they did provide about a dozen "free" screws. I never bothered to contact them regarding the warped Z3 pickguard or the bad jack on my semihollow.

Overall Rating : 6
I also own a Les Paul Studio, Guild X-170, Fender 52 RI Tele, California Tele, G&L (Tele-style) ASAT semihollow (to me WAY better than the Jr), McInturff Royal, Classic 50s Strat, DeArmond X-135 (Great Value!), Martin D-15 and a Taylor Baby. I wish I had actually been able to play one of these prior to ordering one, since I probably would not have bought it. However, Indoor Storm provided exceptional customer service when I returned it within the 48 hour inspection period. Lost or stolen would not make a difference since I returned it. I really disliked the neck radius on the guitar and (to me) bar chords were painful to play (this wasn't just a matter of set-up either, since the set-up was actually rather good). I bought this guitar sight unseen based on early reviews. I ended up replacing it with a McInturf Royal (IMHO twice the guitar for half again as much money). I did keep my ASAT semihollow which (again IMHO) blew away the example of the ASAT Jr I had in terms of tone and playability.

Brand new 2000 Fullerton Ca., USA made. A holy matrimony of a a Tele and a Les Paul Jr. Beautiful translucent looking cherry finish over a very nice grained mahogany wood body and neck, with a very dark ebony board. Two large ASAT pickups(which are NOT P-90's), volume, tone, and pickup selector and that's it. The TONE STARTS HERE, buddy.

Sound : 10
I have owned a least 2 to 3 electrics at the same time, but with this
beauty, they are all gone. The ASAT Jr. is up to anything that you can throw at it. I play rock, r&b, funk, light jazz, and even country.
I only want one guitar to get to know one on one and to get MY tone. This
guitar is the choice for me.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Absolutely stunning look and perfect setup right from the case. G&L's have been my favorites the last few years, and most of the time the
quality control is first rate!

Reliability/Durability : 10
It better stand it's own, as it's my only guitar by choice. It's solid as the Rock of Gibraltar.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have never dealt with G&L directly, even though they are about an hours drive from me. I always go through my dealer, but I haven't had any warranty problems with any of the G&L's that I've owned anyway.

Overall Rating : 10
It's the ASAT JR. and my '69 Deluxe Reverb. A great combination!!!

This a Feb 2000 ASAT Jr. The Jr is sort-of a combination of a tele and a Les Paul jr. It has a mahogany tele/asat shaped body (semi-hollow w/o f-holes) and a mahogany neck with an ebony fretboard. It has a tunamatic bridge and a stop tailpeice. The guitar has a clear gibson-like cherry finish. This finish combinied with the black ASAT special pickups gives the jr a very kalamazoolike look. It has one volume and tone control. It is a very stunning looking guitar.

Sound : 10
This guitar works perfectly with any rock/blues/rnb style. I play the jr through a fulldrive 2 into 67 twin reverb. Lord, what a sound!! The neck pickup is so clean and full with the volume turned down, crank it up and it dirties up perfecty. Slap the 3-way switch to the bridge pickup and you are in wail heaven! The volume and tone controls are very dynamic. This guitar does it all and then some, very warm and woody. You really feel like you are playing a vintage guitar. I have owned many very nice guitars and this thing beats them all.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Again, this is a very lovely guitar. The frets are finished beautifully. No flaws can be found anywhere. The top appears to be book matched mahogany, very swirly and almost three dimensional.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Well, its a G&L so you know its built to last. Everything feels very solid. The poly finish seems to be quite formidable. The pickups are mounted directly into the body very solidly. The only drawback is the guitar is looks so fine that I'm afraid that the first scratch is going to make me cry!

Customer Support : 10
Never dealt directly with G&L but I hear they are great. I'll give them a 10 just to be consistent

Overall Rating : 10
This is the guitar I'll be playing when I'm 90.
