woweeee i've got right here in my hands a Gibson Les Paul 1960 Re-issue Classic in Honeyburst. It was made in the good year of 2000. Standard Les Paul features (2 vol, 2 tone, 3-way switch) except that these have open coil hums (496R ceramic mag, and a 500T ceramic mag). It's got a mahogany back with a mahogany set in neck. Maple carved top, rosewood fingerboard. 1960 slim-taper neck....cam with a hardshell case

this thing can sound pretty full!!! of course...it's a les paul. depending on what kind of amp you're using it can sound anywhere from very thin and twangy to super fat. i like this all around but i like my DC Standard better

from the factory, this guitar was set-up so so. i had to set it up by myself to get it to my taste. i do that ith all guitars though, just like everyone should. the bridge was routed pretty well for a mass produced guitar and all around it was pretty nice.

Carved maple honeyburst top with mahogany back. 496R and 500T Humbucker Pickups, 3 way switch, two volume and two tone controls, tune-o-matic bridge, Mahogany 1960 slim taper neck with rosewood fingerboard, trapezoid inlays. Made in U.S in June 2000.

This guitar really suits my needs. The pickups are loud and the guitar
does good in hard rock. Using with a fender 8 watt practice amp, but
I have to keep the volume down on the guitar or it overloads/over distorts the amp. I have a 50 watt Marshall on the way.(needed a better amp for this guitar.) I play this Les Paul through a Dan Electro Cool Cat Chorus and it sounds great. Also use a flanger, and can duplicate sounds of early Rush songs. I like the warm sound with the switch in the rhythm position and also the bright sounds with the switch in the treble position. I had a hard time (almost impossible)
getting harmonics on the 5th fret, but discovered if I pick close to the bridge pickup, the harmonics at the 5th fret come out loud and clear.

I was dissapointed with the way the guitar was set-up from the factory and I had to adjust the truss rod and action to get it to where I like it, but then again it may just be a matter of individual preference. I changed the stings from Les Paul Signature 9s to Regular Les Paul 10s, and was happy with the sound of the new strings.
No flaws noted in the finish and is outstanding.

This Les Paul is built very durable and hardware is perfect. It is
a heavy guitar and I would recommend strap guards with it.
I can depend on this guitar and I would use it at a gig without a backup. Finish is tough and seems like it will last.

I have been playing about 2 years. If it were stolen, I would buy it again, although I am curious about PRS guitars. I also own a Fender Strat. I like both guitars, but I play the Les Paul more. I like the humbucker pickups compared to the single coils on the strat, which are at times too noisy. I how the neck on this guitar allows easy playing and movement over the fingerboard. One thing I dont like is the location of the input for the guitar which seems to put pressure on the cord jack when you set it down. I havent broken a connection on a cord yet, but I think that day is coming. Also, it is a heavy guitar and I wish it was a little lighter. When shopping for a new guitar, I compared it to the PRS guitars and decided on the Gibson Les Paul because of its history and the price was reasonable.
I would have gone with a PRS but they are just so darn expensive.
Also, the availability of PRS are up to 8 months, and I wanted a guitar-now! I wish that the Les Paul had a tremola bar, so that I could use it on some leads, but I have to rely on other techniques to get a vibrato type sound. Overall Im very happy with this guitar and I think it was an outstanding buy and would recommend this guitar!

2000 model, purchased in early February of 2000. Mine was the 1960 Re-Issue with slim-taper neck, 22 frets on rosewood fingerboard, mahogany body with maple front, aged trapezoid inlays, open 496R and 500T humbucking pickups, Cherryburst finish. Tune-O-Matic bridge with stop tailpiece, you know the drill on this model...

Classic Les Paul sound. Rock and Roll forever out of this. Loud pickups, not as much variety as some of my other guitars, but what it does it does well.

The guitar was perfect for me out of the box. I eventually raised the neck pickup about 1/16 of an inch to match the volume better between the two PUs, but other than that I have not had to make any adjustments other than typical adjustments tat you do when changeing strings. Finish is excellent, just what you would expect on an instrument of this price range.

I have dragged this guitar around a bit (I do not play professionally, I do get together with friends occasionally and have used this at company parties on stage). I am not afraid to bring this anywhere, and do not expect any problems. I have never brought a backup when expecting to use this one except if I needed another sound that this one would not make.

I've been playing since 1965, but took an almost 10 year break while the kids were small. I bought this when I wanted to start playing again but did not want to spend the even higher price tag for a standard LP. I like the sound and looks of the guitar even though it has a plain (not figured) front. I might be tempted to replace it with a fancier face if it were no longer here. But I also wish it had more lightness, I might be tempted to replace it with an Epiphone LP ES to take some of the strain off my sholder and back. (I was in an auto accident a couple of years ago and my ribs get sore after some time lugging a 9+ pound guitar around.)

Mine was the 1960 Re-Issue with slim-taper neck, 22 frets on rosewood fingerboard/mahogany body, aged trapezoid inlays, open 496R and 500T humbucking pickups, Cherryburst - probably 1998 manufacture. Sold it when I ran out of patience that it would magically become a decent guitar.
Feature are straightforward, basic, but for a guitar that lists for $4000 or so I'd expect a good deal more. I guess re-issue means you pay an additional $1500 for some gold lettering on the pickguard.

I found the sound of these particluar humbucking pks to be the worst of any quality guitar I've played. They seem to be wound for screaming past full stacks and to my ear a harsh and one-dimensional. I think I play a range of styles and was only comfortable with these pick-ups when thrashing. IMHO, they don't push effects well because they're monochromatic - no character. What is hear is more effect than guitar sound. Tried it through three different amps, under performed in all of them.

The Gibson set-up was embarassing - If you think the company actually cares. I would say they have unskilled labor on the tailend of their assembly line. I completely redid everything, including the strings. The intonation and neck set was way off. However, the finish was really great, very few flaws - but I would expect this from one of their top of the line guitars, so big congratulations.
I hated the neck, far too skinny to the point of being limiting. The frets weren't crowned at all - machined stamped flat. Finally, it's heavy and the shape is uncomfortable.

Built like a tank, never had a doubt it would outlive many other guitars. Don't know why you'd need a back-up unless you wanted to bring a good sounding and comfortable guitar along just for the heck of it.

Don't make the same mistake I made, play the guts out of this guitar before you buy it. I was lucky I sold it at a slight gain, but only because it was like new and this guitar still has a certain cache. I think it's flat out obsolete, and the hot pickups are like putting a ruanchy teddy on your grandma.
Compared to Gibson ES-335/345, P-90s, P-100s, Strats, Ricks and EB Axis, even an Epi acoustic, the last guitar of the bunch I'd like to be stuck on an island with is an LP Classic. I think there are $300 foreign made solid bodies that can outperform and outsound this $4000 monster in every way - but perhaps longevity. My apologies to all Les Paul lovers out there - live long and prosper.

2000 Model, made in U.S.A., 22 Frets, Carved maple top on mahogany, 2 volume 2 Tone controls( Neck & Bridge Pickups ),3-Way toggle switch:Treble(Bridge),Rhythm(Neck)all wired for standard humbucking operation. Twin humbucker configuration: Gibson 496-R Neck and 500-T Bridge. Both passive pickups equipped with ceramic magnets. One piece Mahogany neck set to a mahogany body, bound les paul single cut-away style body. Classic nickel tune-o-matic/stop bar bridge and tailpiece. Vintage style gibson deluxe tuners found on old les pauls and some standard models. 1960 slim taper LP neck ( The fastest les paul neck ever made ),scale lenght 24 34", nut width 1.6875", bound rosewood fingerboard with "aged" trapezoid inlays. It came with a nice Gibson USA les paul case with silk internal cover. It also included a truss rod tool. The guitar is strung with a set of Gibson Les Paul signature series pure nickel wrap strings .09-.46 custom gauge which is the string gauge i use with all my electrics. Straight out of the box, my paul was setup perfect for my preference. It was tuned half a step lower from standard when i got it and that's exactly how i tune all my guitars. I have tuned to Eb since i started playing 15 Yrs. ago.

This guitar is perfect for ROCK !!! which is mainly my style. This guitar really ROCKS ! I just love it. The fastest les paul neck i've ever played. Very smooth fingerboard, not dry at all( straight out of the box.)I have over 25 pedals new and vintage but i like playing it with the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive set for boost: Level up, drive down and the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver set at normal overdrive use: Level at 10 O'clock,Tone at 9 O'clock and Gain at 2 O'clock. I add a little bit of delay from my Boss DD-5 set for reverb-like delays and the sound i get is like RUSH's "working man" song. I nailed it!!! I play thru a Marshall JCM2000 DSL100 head ( set on clean channel if i'm using Overdrive effects pedals ) and a Marshall JCM900 4100 both with Marshall 1960A 4x12 cabinets with celestion 30's switching via whirlwind a/b box. I also use a VOX AC30 Top Boost reissue for clean sounds but when i got the Marshall JCM2000,i can't believe how the clean channel sounds like! It's so clean that you won't believe it's a Marshall. On high gain settings, let me just give you this warning as Carl Bell of FUEL said it:"Know what the roar of a les paul through a marshall can do to your gonadtropic zone--That's your balls, buddy. It can pump you up and make you sterile at the same time. And all the while making you smile". I also play blues and classic rock and a little jazz and this guitar is just perfect. In my entire musical experience, the gibson les paul is the best sounding humbucker equipped guitar i have ever played. And the PRS? It's not what it's all cracked up to be( I own 2 PRS, Custom 22 & McArthy ) Tonal versatility? Yes, but the warmth, roundness, fatness and the creamy super sustain of a les paul is still unmatched by any other humbucker equipped guitar up to this day!!! The tone is just beautiful. It's the ultimate ROCK GUITAR and it's the standard by which all humbucker guitars are judged! Period!!!

Straight out of the box,i picked it up,opened the nice case tuned it a little bit (the G & B strings are slightly flat ),started playing some scales, some licks. Sounds great and i haven't even plugged it in yet! Setups are perfect for my taste out of the box!Awesome. The guitar is just perfect. I mean PERFECT. Beautiful Honey Burst. The top has a bit more arched than a standard. I own 2 LP standards '81 and a mid-seventies. Cherry sunburst and a tobacco burst. The pickups are HOT! Specially the 500T in the bridge. This is so far the loudest, hottest pickups from gibson. Well, of course they have the Tony Iommi model now which is off the scale!!! My Gibson SG Standard is equipped the Tony Iommi Signature Pickups.

The guitar is pretty solid! It's built for HEAVY ROCKING!! Although i wouldn't use it on a gig without replacing the strap buttons with a locking type. It's just too tiny.Unless you get the gibson safety strap which is spacially made for these strap buttons. Watch out!you could lose a very expensive chunk of wood. I would definitely use it without a backup. The only reason why guitar players bring a bunch of guitars for backup, is string breaks. No one would bring a guitar that will fall apart in the middle of a song.

Year 2000 Tobacco burst finish, very nice looking indeed. Nicely aged tuners that I find work quite well and the aged trapezoid inlays are also very nice to look at. The wood on this guitar is simply gorgeous as the finish is right on and the back of the neck shows the gradations in the would from a speckled goldish color to a deep, deep brown. the neck is perfect for me as I don't possess very large hands and looked specifically for a 1960 Classic as its neck is a bit smaller and plays fast. The guitar is a perfect fit for me and I have all but stopped playing my only other guitar, a 1987 Schecter that I bought new and have played since 1987 and love too. But this Gibson 1960 Classic guitar plays very, very nicely and allows for smoother chord work and excellent lead with picks and finger picking styles too. Everytime I play it the tuning holds better, and i get further away from using the Schecter. My son is using that guitar now as it is infinitely more playable than his danelectro. I put pickup covers on mine to both improve the cosmetics (my opinion) and to protect the pickups which are the 500T and 496R. The neck position plays very bluesy, not as warm as i though it might be at first, however what Ive learned is to dial back the treble just a hair and it does exactly what i want and more. Very versatile pickup there. If i need more attack, i open the treble on the neck pickup all the way. very touch sensitive. Oh, I should mention that I play through my brand new Dr. Z Maz Jr. 18 and a finer amp you will not aquire as it affords a wide variety of tone rich with harmonics and all volumes, and if you want to hear what powerchords are supposed to sound like, combine the treble pickup with the maz cranked and you will hear the sound you have always been looking for. Pete Townshend indeed. I waited 4 months or more for this amp. different amps with there own good tone, maybe, but better sounding, better craftsmanship? doubtful. but thats another review. Comes with plush Gibson Hard Shell Case.

Mine is a honeyburst Les Paul Classic (not the Classic Plus, which has fancier maple). It is a beautiful single cutaway mahogany body with maple cap and a mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard. It is a standard Les Paul configuration (3-way pickup toggle switch and 2 volume, 2 tone controls that you can't blend). Pickups are 2 ceramic magnet humbuckers made by Gibson (500T? 496R?). It has a vintage ABR bridge (not tune-o-matic). Standard Gibson 24-3/4 scale neck. The neck is thinner than a regular Les Paul per 1960 specs and is amazingly comfortable for both lead and chord playing. The guitar cam with a plush case and neck tension rod wrench. Gibson sent me a letter indicating you have a lifetime warranty. Don't know the brand of tuners used but they are a vintage-style plastic, not metal. Aged greenish trapezoid inlays in the neck. My maple top is not figured but is very attractive up close. Standard Carved Les Paul top. Like a prior reviewer I found this guitar less bright than the Les Paul Standard, but since I own single coil guitars I wanted something with more mid-range and warmth and this guitar does that tone well.
Sound
:
9
The tone (at least at reasonable volumes) is classic Les Paul (think Allman Brothers), but perhaps a tad darker and warmer - much warmer than a Les Paul Standard, but still with some bright high ends depending on your picking style. This is not a guitar that "sparkles" on the high end, but it has enough to satisfy me - even playing through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe which is an amp with more bass/midrange voicing and less high-end than most Fender amps. If I had only one guitar, I might go with the Les Paul Standard or a Guild Bluesbird for a wider range of tone, but I was looking for a jazzier, darker tone and this guitar does that extremely well. A great blues guitar that you can play some quite jazz on as well.
The pickups were a little hot for my liking so I adjusted them downward a bit from the strings to avoid a distortion - other players might like that however. I was looking for more of a blues/jazz tone. This minor adjustment seemed to do the trick.

It was set up well, but with light gauge strings (0.09s) I haven't found any flaws, but I'm not a perfectionist. The pickup selector is a little loose - don't know why. See note above regarding adjustment of the pickups.

I've been playing for over 30 yeras. I would probably buy this guitar again if it were lost or stolen.
I love the warm tone and the neck - very playable - and one of the best guitar necks I've seen.
It is a darker and warmer - toned guitar than a Les Paul Standard or a Guild Bluesbird. However you could easily change this with a swap of pickups as this is essential a Les Paul Standard with different pickups and a slightly thinner neck.

My Les Paul was made in '99. It has a beautiful honeyburst finish with a mahogony neck and aged trapezoid inlays. It has two humbucking Gibson pickups and a three-way toggle switch. When I bought the guitar I was actually going to get a Les Paul Standard but I played te Classic and the neck was thinner and the guitar was more playable. It also had a lot more chunk and was a little less expensive than the Standard.

This guitar sounds great. I play modern dirt rock with a mix of good ol' blues rock and it suits the style perfectly. I play it through a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 100 head and 1960 4x12 cab. For effects I use and Alesis Q20. I have never had a problem with feedback, in fact it is the quietest guitar that I have ever played. The guitar doesn't have a great variety of souds. Its either crunchy treble or a rich warm tone. My only complaint is that it is difficult to get a bright, clean, springy tone.

Everything on the guitar is adequite as far as action and fit go. The pickups are adjusted exactly how I want them. However, one of the frets needs a little filing. The finish is beautiful.
