This "67" reissue has cherry finish, sculpted mahogany body, tapered mahogany 1 piece neck, ebony fretboard, tuneomatic bridge with stop tailpiece, large black pickgard,3 pickups, gold hardware, large flat frets, MOP block inlays, bound head and neck, Les Paul Custom truss rod cover, and grover tuners. This limited edition guitar was produced 1 year only (1992), and was produced in "premium plus"

Sound : 10
I have a variety of amps, but on gigs with the classic rock band (gorillajonesrocks.com) I usually use my 100 watt marshall/metroamp 12000 series plexi head, or my Dean Markley signiture series 120 head. This guitar is somewhat brighter sounding than a LP custom and a bit nasal sounding at times on its own, but put with the band that texture is not noticeable. The bridge emulates in higher gain modes the classic ac/dc lead tone of angus young, with searing treble and articulation. Note seperation is especially noticeable on this guitar with all pickups. The middle pickup switch selection combines the br+middle pickup giving a statlike tone, but without as much quack. The neck pickup is unusually bright for a neck pickup and is very useable for that woman tone, and some rhythem sounds. All in all the three selections are very usable for all genres of music

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I do all my set-ups and had no trouble getting the guitar to play like butter. The Long flat neck was a breeze to set up and play with low action and no buzzing (noticable out of AMP). The fret finishing was meticulous along with the binding, inlays, and nut. Dont forget the factory advertised this guitar as a "Preminu Plus" designation, and the details were well taken care of. There is some tarnishing evident on the gold hardware, but that is common on 14+ year old guitars.

Reliability/Durability : 7
SG's are notoriously fragile, and suspect to break at the neck/headstock tenon. So...you need to be careful. I gave this a 7 rating because of this problem. If you ever buy a SG, be sure to check the area where the neck jouns the headstock for breaks or repairs. Although i have seen some repairs that are so good that it is impossible to detect that the neck was broken and repaired ( RE: Gary Shin...Lays Guitar, Akron Ohio )

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have not had a need to deal personally with gibson Co.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
Been playing 30+ years, and have owned a lot of gear including a now defunct vintage guitar and amp store (Karma Music, Youngstown, Ohio). I enjoy playing this guitar, although it is not a Les Paul, the light weight, access to the upper frets, and tonal options make it a winner in my book. Although the guitar is a little unbalanced (neck heavy) and tends to droop down at times, you get used to it and it doesnt seem to be such a big issue. Some players take the straplock out of the back and reposition it on the top bout, giving a little more balance, but i wouldnt recommend doing that to a vintage piece.

The 1967 SG Custom was a limited run guitar made in late 1991. It has a large 4 point white pick guard; wine red ( see through cherry ); white control cover plate; 3 gold humbucking pick-ups; toggle switch; large gold Grover tuning pegs; gold hardware; ebony fretboard; mahogany neck and body; pearl block inlays and a 5 piece split diamond peghead inlay.

Sound : 10
The pick-ups can be set as bridge; bridge and middle and neck. The bridge pick-up is a little thin sounding but is articulate and toneful. It's doesn't have the same massive bite as a Les Paul Standard bridge pick-up but has a similar sound of the AC/DC Angus Young growling tone. The bridge and middle pick-up ( toggle switch in middle position ) have a thick treble tone. It's very different from the standard Gibson sound and almost gives the impression of an out of phase sound. The neck pick-up is just flat out great. Very thick and musical sounding and very much in the vein of Claptons "Strange Brew" tone. I own a lot of amps but the 1967 SG Custom sounds best through my Marshall 1987XW half stack ( great woman tone) ; Boogie 45 watt Nomad with 2 30 watt Vintage Celestion 12's ( clear, articulate and punchy ) and surprising good through my Sovtek Mig 100H and Marshall 1922 cabinet ( balls to the wall Angus Young ).

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Gibson is very inconsistent with set ups and quality control. They got it right with this beauty. The action is very close and doesn't buzz. The large flat frets and ebony fretboard are excellent. The full access neck is a pleasure to play. NO FRET OVER HANG!!! That's something of a problem with Gibson.

Reliability/Durability : 8
I bought this guitar used and it was played but not abused. The neck adjusts properly and everything does what it was designed to do. SG's are delicate instruments. There's not much neck support where the neck meets the body. If you like to abuse and toss around your guitars, then pass on any SG's.

I've called Gibson with questions on many guitars. One customer service rep told me that my Maestro Blueshawk was a forgery because Gibson never made a tremelo equipped Blueshawk. Well...... maybe I spoke to the janitor at Gibson. I also called Gibson Montana with questions on my L20 Koa ( very rare acoustic ) and the rep was acting as though she was protecting our nations security. Walter Carter was the only individual at Gibson who had the passion and the time of day to answer all of my questions. Walter has left Gibson. Gibson lost their best historic and informative mind. With Walter, Gibson support was a 10. Without Walter, Gibson support is as accurate as a weather advisory.

Overall Rating : 10
Works for me. I bought this used about 4 years ago and got a great deal. An effortless guitar to play. The neck is the best. It's almost Les Paul like in sound just half the weight. Looks spiffy.
