2008 Gibson les Paul Standard,Mahogany body(they claim that it's a "Chambered" body)with a AAA Flame Maple Top,Rosewood Fingerboard(i really hope that it comes with Ebony Fingerboard),Passive Electronics,Locking Tuners.....Tune-o-Matic Bridge etc
Sound
:9
Rich and Full sound,
The "Chambered body" doesn't make it sounds thin, actually you can have a even more Toneful sound from this
Unlike the Les Paul Classic which have a brighter sound, this 2008 standard sounds even more aggressive and..."Dark",tons of sustain, smooth, and hot!
Every notes are defined and clear
The only thing i dislike about this guitar is,on the clean channel, when you play chord on the neck pickup,it will be a little bit "Distored" since the pickup is too hot;a Compressor could help with this
Action, Fit, & Finish
:9
The factory set-up are okay, but i've got problem when i first get the guitar from store:the strings always goes out to tune, maybe it's the problem of the nut,but it's solved now after few monthes of playing.
Anyway, the frets are perfectly polished,no flaws on every parts of the guitar,
One thing i need to mention is the flame maple top, mine come with a honey burst finish and the maple top are SO BEAUTIFUL,Gibson Claim that it's a AAA top but i think it should be rated more than that!
Reliability/Durability

Looks like it will last forever, anyway,it's a Gibson!
I don't need any Backup even i have to use it on a gig.

And here is my own opinion,no matter what, nothing can even come close to a Gibson Les Paul,no matter the sound,or the outlook

I play Rock, Blues, Country. This guitar fits the Blues - Rock genre best, but for those old, pretty, country tunes...does a good job. I play it thru a Mesa Boogie Lonstar Special with a Mesa 4X10 extension cab. Very quiet, with a rich full sound. Add some gain and it growls like a bad dog.
Action, Fit, & Finish

The guitar came out of the box setup pretty good. I lowered the action a bit, and after a few day's of it getting used to the climate in Kansasl, I had to loosen the neck a bit. I thought the bridge pickup was a little to close to the strings. The finish is perfect. The workmanship is perfect. The flame maple top is classified as a AA, but come real close to AAA. It's pretty well bookmatched. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 7. This guitar is set up by a computer plex machine. I don't know about that. It has some tuning and intonation issues. Most new guitar do. It takes a break in period after you've done the fine tunning on it. I'll be taking it to a great shop I know to have it set up. So, plan on spending another $50 to $75 bucks on one if you buy one. No big deal in my books. Should be covered under warranty, but I want to take it to a particular shop to have this done.

This guitar will last forever. I'll never need to buy another Les Paul Standard. It will be gigged a lot. All of the hardware is solid. I always take a Strat along also. Can't do everything with a Les Paul, and can't do it all with a Strat either.

It's a limited lifetime warranty, which basically means...it's got no warranty unless something goes haywire with the actuall construction. I can say this for Gibson, I had a 90's Les Paul Standard that had a rubber neck. Sent it to them, within a week and a half, they sent me a brand new Guitar.

This marks my 40th year of playing and teaching guitar. If this axe was stolen, I would immediatly buy another. I love it. My favoirite feature is the chambered body. Does my bad back a lot of good. I can't play my "74" Les Paul Custom any longer. It kills my back. This guitar reminds me of the old Kalamazoo day's. It's a great Axe.

Firstly i want to make it clear - nothing is wrong with the stock pickups - they are brilliant. I just stuck the Aldrich's in because they have a slightly higher output and a warmer tone on the neck pickup.
Any sound in the world possible just by playing with the controls a bit. i play 80's hard rock and metal also some blues every now and then but some of my friends have played it with different styles and it works brilliantly. very rich sound - bought out by the chambering of the body - very loud acoustically. i love every aspect of this guitar

action is perfect for me - i live in the UK so it needed to be set up after it came from the US but only a slight truss adjustment and a quick fiddle with the bridge. 2yrs playing. also own Fender strat, epi LP and a guitar i built myself; out of the 4 this is number 1! i chose this guitar because it feels awesome - the neck profile alone makes it worth the money!
If this got stolen, after beating the thief to an unrecognisable pulp, i would buy another. as a matter of fact i want 2 more anyway, one with stock pickups the other with a pair of Gibson original HB-L and HB-R pickups in.
If you have the money to buy this guitar, and then buy something else you will have made a big mistake - any negative reviews will have come from the Les Paul 'faithful' who have NOT tried this guitar but hate it because its not identical to a '58. '58's are good but this is in a class of its own. change is good as long as they don't take away those essential features of the LP - like the new Raw Power series or the Axcess.

This is where I had a problem. The nut was not cut correctly, and the guitar would not play in tune. Also, there are obvious gouges into the fret board and binding behind each fret. A guitar this expensive ought to have better QC.

As I said, I tried several Les Pauls, including a few of these new Standards. I always admired LPs, but the neck shape, whether 50s or 60s, always made my hand cramp after a few minutes. This new asymmetrical neck design is SO comfortable! I can play all day. That and the sound are the main reasons I got it. I would get another, but I'd really scrutinuze the nut and neck. I hate having to get a new guitar immediately serviced before it's playable. One other thing that has kept me from LPs is the 2 volume control thing. I'm leaning toward re-wiring it so there is a master volume, and the other pot being a blend between the pickups. This makes much more sense to me.

You should know these by now...but in addition to the usual appointments you get:
1. Asymmetric neck profile
2. Plek setup
3. New pickups
4. Chambered body
5. Locking tuners
6. New caps
7. Tone pros bridge hardware
8. Neutrik locking jack
9. Dunlop straplocks
10. Semi-transparent electronics covers
These are all excellent additions to an already iconic guitar. I love the Plek setup, the locking tuners, tone pros hardware, straplocks and Neutrik locking jack - I'm going to have these installed on my other guitars.
My Les Paul is in Iced Tea and has a killer top. It is lightweight for a Les Paul and I am absolutely smitten by it.

I play progressive metal, metal, instrumental rock (eg Dream Theater, Vai, Sabbath, Metallica - but not on this guitar...), heavy rock (Zeppelin, GNR, Queen, Van Halen), U2/Radiohead, and Rockabilly (mainly Brian Setzer/Stray Cats). I use a combined rack pre-amp (Tech 21 Sansamp PSA1.1) and Waves GTR software on an imac. I also have a few analogue effects, Voodoo Labs Microvibe, Fulltone Tape Echo, and Catalinbread Tremolo. A Lehle dual switches between inputs.
For the classic metal, heavy rock and U2 repertoire, the guitar is perfect. The PUPS have a very classic late 50s early 60s vibe, they're not too hot, and very musical. The neck PUP is gorgeous. The neck PUP can be a little quiet but this is easily rectified by altering its height and thus distance from the strings.
Sustain is excellent (listen! you can hear it now...) and is possibly enhanced by the new hardware. The bridge PUP rocks! It is the most musical Les Paul I have owned (and I've owned a 2005 standard, a 59 historic reissue, a 60 historic reissue). This one is the best sounding.
It responds superbly to volume/tone control alterations. If you like the Les Paul sound, you won't be disappointed!
Action, Fit, & Finish

I'm never really sure about this category, as the first thing I do with a new guitar is re-string with Ernie Balls and set it up for me.
I will say that if you just want to pick it up and play, the set-up is great.
The Plek setup is one of the main benefits of the 2008 model and I have been able to get the action so low, without any buzzing or choking bends.
The finish and detailing is great. There were no flaws of note. The fret ends are smooth and the quality of the workmanship is the best I have seen for a nonCustom Shop Gibson.
Reliability/Durability

It's a Les Paul...but....
1. It's light
2. It has straplocks
3. It has a locking jack
4. It has locking tuners
All of which mean it is likely to cope with live playing and frequent use. Obviously, the nitro finish can be less durable but it is also easier to repair.

I've owned a few Les Pauls but this is, hands down, the best Les Paul out there. In terms of value for money it can't be beaten.
If you want historical accuracy, you are looking at the wrong review. But if you want a great playing, great sounding, exceptionally well put together modern Les Paul, with additional security offered by Straplocks, modern appointments such as locking tuners, and a comfortable neck, this is the one you want.

Well, folks, this purchase surprised me as much as it might surprise some of the old-school purists out there. The story begins like this. In anticipation of our 10-year wedding anniversary, my wife (the best!,) basically allowed me to go and pick whatever guitar I wanted - and yes, being married to a guitarist she knew good and well what that meant as she had seen me lust over various Gibson custom shop models. In my mind, this was going to be easy - it was going to be a Les Paul R9 or R8. I already have a classic and was looking for the next step for some time. So, I settled in at my local GC "premier room" with a beautiful 58, 59, 59 Murphy aged, and for the hell of it, 57 3-pickup black beauty. I plugged into a Mesa rectifier and put all of the axes through the full tester cycle: clean, crunch, and high gain. i spent - no kidding - about an hour and a half running each of them through, taking mental notes, pros and cons, etc. After about an hour the sales guy said, "hey, I know this may not be what you're after, but have you tried the new 08 Standard?" Nope - sure didn't, and yup - probably not what I want. Well he bought me one anyway and told me to take a spin, just for comparison's sake.
Well, as you might have guessed, surprise, surprise, surprise. It was nothing short of fantastic. I actually didn't want to believe it.
In clean mode, the tone was a little unusual for a LP in that it was a little more woody (almost 335-ish, believe it or not), but for clean, that's great! Clearly the chambering. But when put to the crunch or gain, it had THE classic LP tone and sang with sustain better than the rest. Again, part of me didn't want to believe it.
In fact, when my wife came back to get me and close the deal, she couldn't believe it either! Folks, we all know that tone is ALWAYS in the ear of the beholder and a lot of people will cringe at the thought of picking a new Standard over any custom shop model, but to me, it was a clear choice. Playing in a part-time cover band with some chums from work, I need guitar that cover a lot of ground, and shocckingly this one does wonders at that. To all you purists, give it a shot, you, too, might also be taken by it. Now, did I make the best investment? Probably not, as we all know the reissues are adored. But for my needs, this is probably the best LP I ever played.
Action, Fit, & Finish

Ok - let's start right off: I DON'T CARE how high-tech the Plek system is, there is no way I would purchase a new guitar and play it without a professional setup. Period. The Plek on mine was really just average. Since, in my view, Plek is a little bit of marketing hype, I am not even considering it in the rating here. I have seen some guitars with decent Plek jobs, but I have also seen some REALLY bad ones, as in where you see the machine went a little awry and nicked the binding on every fret when leveling! Yikes!
Anyhow, mine was perfect from a finish standpoint. Desertburst with the most beautiful figured top I have seen in a while. Everything looked great. Hardware all good.

I think this one was made for performance. Not a big fan of locking jaacks, but I will give it a shot and see how it is during the next gig. Seems to me it will only slow guitar changes. But hey, Gibson is probably thinking..."why would you ever change?"

The new 2008 standard lives up to the hype - unlike the 'robot' nonsense. It is lighter than earlier LPs but is, even unplugged, richly resonant. The Plek'd fret dressing works wonders without a hint of choking or fret buzz. The pickups are very characterful and the volume and tone pots, if used properly, can dial in some wonderful sounds. One of the most significant features, though, is the use of locking tuners - superb tuning stability! The new neck shape is immediately comfortable, too.

Spending time tweaking volume and tone settings really pays off with a wide palette of sounds. I play blues, rock and rock fusion and also compose professionally, about the only thing I avoid is bloody Jazz - no offence jazzers; just seems that with all your knowledge and experience you could actually play real music rather than all that widdly-diddly crap.
This guitar's sound is very soulful and responsive and even at high gain (use a pair of Mesa Road King Heads). Clean, the guitar sounds, to me, clearer and, well, more 'detailed' than my old Les Paul Custom - especially with both pickups on and the tone rolled down on the bridge p/u.
The bridge p/u at 'full chat' still has character but is very sharp and with distortion takes on the Gary Moore 'singing' quality of Dunluce.

The guitar is superb - the new features really have paid off and have resulted in a guitar that's hard to put down.
I must take issue with the review of David Hall; 'Cheap gig bag'??? This guitar comes with a Gibson hard case. I'm just wondering what it is you're reviewing? A 'Vintage' guitar perhaps? You did mention the Vintage brand. I mean, those things are cheap for a reason. Do you work for Fender???
I would advise other readers to ignore that review.
This guitar was one of 2 possible 'winners' the other was a PRS 513 - a brilliant concept and a fine instrument - just got the impression it was trying to be too many things at once.
I would most certainly replace this guitar if it were stolen or lost.
Only a '9' because of Gibson's appalling support record.

I don't do many reviews. But I'm going to do one here today on the 2008 LP Standard. Gibson needs to know how we ("out here in the field") feel about things when Gibson - a company built keeping tradition alive - pushes the edge and takes a risk (although I am still trying to ignore the Robot Guitar, what were they thinking... they should have partnered with Line6 and sold it as a Variax - maybe then someone would have accepted it).
OK... Features have been identified by other reviewers, so rather than doing the bullet items again, let me say that I really do believe that Gibson thought long and hard about exactly what features to put on the new Standard and what to leave off, with the idea of creating good physical and sonic synergy between the components. There are a host of features on this Paul never before found on a Paul. But... It is still very much a Les Paul - even with the new features.
Sound
:10
More articulate than previous Pauls. Combo of the Bourn pots and Burstbucker Pros produces a more modern sound (slightly hotter and brighter - more presence) than previous Pauls, but (important), still very much the Les Paul sound. Still fat with plenty of mids - and if you don't like the tone produced by this axe, the Bourn system makes it easy to do swaps on your pot values. I play professionally and have three other Les Pauls, a 59 Reissue, a 75 Deluxe with Mini-buckers and an early 80's Standard. Each Paul sounds different - but each sounds like a Paul (the variation is slight). It's kind of like driving 4 different 911 Porsche's of different years. They're all different, and they all have a personality - but the DNA in each is unmistakable. Same here.
Mainly I run through an AC30 with Alnico Blue Dogs, Keeley compressor, BBE Sonic Maximizer and a Line6 DL4. Fulltone Full Drive is in there sometimes, along with a couple other things now and then. But, each effect I use is set with a small amount of saturation, so essentially what you hear from my rig is the amp and guitar.
For me, I completely dig what the updates have done in the tone department.
Action, Fit, & Finish

I ordered mine online through MusiciansFriend, so mine were the first hands (outside of Gibson) to touch it - at least it seems so. I can say that the build quality is superb. I've owned Andersons, lots of Fenders, Rickenbackers, Gretsch???s and have played numerous PRS models, along with pretty much everything else out there. You won???t find better build quality. The setup had the strings much higher than I liked from the factory, but with the locking Nashbille Tune-O-Matic, a couple of turns on the bridge elevation knobs and it was perfect. What amazed me was how low you can set the action without fretting-out or buzzing. Way lower than any of my other Les Pauls. I love my action low and fast, but this is capable of going much lower than even I wanted. I ended up raising it back up a turn or so after it was near the bottom. Factory intonation was perfect and I didn't have to tweak it at all. I watched a video about the Plek system on Gibson.com and was pretty impressed, but even more impressed after I played the Plek'd neck. Accurate would be the best word I can think of, but you really need to just check it out for yourself. The asymmetrical neck design is fatter than even my 59, but it doesn???t feel that way after a few minutes. The design is extremely comfortable ??? especially at a long show. I normally rotate between 2 Les Pauls at a show, but I found myself playing this one and not rotating this past weekend, simply because of the comfort factor after a couple of hours - remember we're talking about the action here (the fact that this is also a physically lighter Paul is also a bonus) - although the chambered body is a bit fatter than my other Pauls.

It's a Les Paul Standard. Pure Gibson. It's built for professional play, night after night, year after year. I have every reason to believe that it will be just as reliable as my other Pauls. Bottom line: bullet proof, reliable and roadworthy.

Gibson has been great to me over the years. They have worked with me on so many things, brainstorming, troubleshooting my rig - even when the guitar was not necessarily the issue, you name it. I've never had to send a Gibson axe back for anything mechanical. But, I know the attitude of the Gibson company is to make things work for musicians who work (or who just love to play). I was on the phone with the support department about 5 minutes before I started writing this to talk about the Bourn system and what's coming down the pike in that area.

Gibson has done a remarkable job here friends. Props to them. It was not an easy job to update a legend. But, bottom line, it had to be done. Gibson has retained the previous model too and now refers to it as the Vintage (I think). See previous reviews. So, if you want a new Les Paul with the old set up, it's still out there. Probably always will be, my guess. One thought I would like to share is that I am not sure this would be my choice of Les Pauls if it were to be my ONLY Les Paul (ask me again after about 50 shows). I think most of us have an idea of what we're after sonically when we acquire a Les Paul - warm, big mids, fast fast fast neck... there is that certain unmistakable signature sound that only a Paul will do. That being said, this update to the legend is cool and provides that same detectable DNA, with some very useful new features and updated sonic output. A guitar to a working musician is a tool. Every musician has a signature sound and playing theme and uses his/her selected set of tools to achieve that theme. If the Les Paul is YOUR tool of choice, the 2008 Standard Les Paul is definitely something you don't want to miss checking out - especially if you are looking to add a LP to an existing working group of Pauls. Good luck and thanks Gibsonfor a job well done here.

My wife bought me a 57 junior vos and I love it. I play it every chance I get. I have always wanted a more standard les paul for some added versatility. I tried two 58 standard vos and a goldtop 57 vos. I personally did not like them at all. They sounded dead compared to this new standard. The new one had more balls, more clarity, and just sounded all around better to me. I have read most of the old farts comments on les paul forum reguarding this guitar and change is tough for the old guys. This is a modern les paul. They still make historics if you want that stale old sound. I do not wish to sound like anyone but me. Play one for yourself and if you dont like it dont buy it. I however bought a goldtop and love it.

Ok, now here's where a ton of people are going to get very vicious and claim that this guitar does not sound like a "real" les paul. Big thumbs up to Gibson for taking this direction with the standard. For the rest of you who want a heavy guitar, they wisely produced the traditional. I bought this guitar 4 weeks ago. It is the best sounding les paul I have ever played. I was never a big fan of the "big-mids" of the older standards. This guitar has warm mids with alot of depth. it jumps out on solo's. Bottom is clear and the highs are not painful. Very, very musical. There will be alot of great music recorded with these over the next few years.

Fantastic, plays amazing. the neck is like a 50's neck with a turbo charger. Nice and fast and still real solid. I love the frets. I am having a hard time going back to my medium frets. Plek is no gimmick. Play great the first time I picked it up. I do my own setup and play around alot. The action can go way down but i found I like it up a little higher than my other guitars, probably the bigger frets. The finish is a work of art. Mine is a honeyburst with a beautiful flame.

I've been playing for 36 years. If this guitar were stolen I would cry like a baby. I sat down in the store for a couple of hours with this and a traditional ( and a bunch of other les pauls) and really fell in love with the tone. Its alive. I play this through my 2555 silver jubillee and 1960a. Definitely the most soulful tone I have ever had.
