I play in a cover band doing classic rock, but i am a blues player and this guitar suites anything you want lots of tones in it. I play with a soldano hot rod 50 through a 2x12 cabinet and use a boss distortion and a crybaby wha. guitar is pretty quite..I gigged with it the first night i had it and it was buzzing a little at the club but that was due to their bad ground i suppose..i havent played it at home yet havent had the time to. very rich full sound..total gibson sound...awsome..I love the guitar i will never need another one..ever..might just buy some more classics though. or regular standard les pauls

I got the guitar around 3 oclock on a friday..I had 2 gigs that weekend one friday and one saturday so i just took it out of the box and took it up there..It was set up with 9's, i use 10's but did'nt have time to change them..I played the guitar anyways both nights all night long...the set up was awsome..did'n have to do anything to it,,.it performed wonderfully right out of the box...the top is a gorgeous honeyburst..The best color in my opinion. I looked the guitar over prety well and i couldn't see any flaws...as far as playing goes there were no flaws at all. gibson is doing a great job these days. The neck on the classics cannot be beat..The slim taper is really comfortable to play.

I played it right out of the box and had no problems ..it's very solid will last forever..Hardware will last forever too i suppose. The finish looks thick enough that i don't think it will wear throug..I'm sure it will on the top after years of putting my arm there..Replaced the strap buttons with locking strap buttons...dropped too many guitars on stage??The guitar is very dependable..I usually gig with a back up but it wouldn't bother me being without one. I used it right out of the box for 2 nights straight and never grabbed my back up one time. It's a dream to play I would definenlty gig without a back up with this guitar and not worry at all.

I love the guitar period..You just can't beat a les paul....I bought it from the music zoo in N.Y. I live in colorado and they were awsome they sent it out express and things just went great>They are a huge dealer and i would definently buy from them again..The guy down there chris was just awsome..He would reply to my e-mails in like 5 minutes and did alot of extra stuff for me..I have never been there but they are a bitchin store..best service i have ever had from a music store..

1960 re-issue Goldtop with slim taper neck and 490R/500T pickups.
It's basically your run-of-the-mill Les Paul but the slim taper neck makes it much easier for my small hands to play.
It's also much lighter than the Les Paul Standard that I traded in for this Goldtop, maybe as much as 1 1/2pounds lighter. This one is much more comfortible to wear for extended playing sessions.
Sound
:8
The 490R/500T pickups are very hot, nice bright sound.

Nice clean model, no blemishes in the finish. Neck and frets feel great. My only complaint is that corners on the individual saddles on the bridge are very sharp. Makes it uncomfortible to rest your palm on the bridge when muting. I'm going to get them buffed to remove the sharp corners.

It's a big chuck of wood. I've never had any problems with Les Pauls in the past and I don't expect to have any problems with this one. I made sure to replace the useless strap buttons with strap locks.

I've always lusted after a Goldtop and I traded a very nice Honeyburst Les Paul Standard for this one. I much prefer the neck on the Classic over the Standard and that was the deciding factor in the trade. If I lost this one I would definitely purchase another one.

Made in 1999, 22 frets, mahogany body, maple top, 2volume, 2 tone, H/H pickup configuration (500T at the bridge, and 496(i think) at the neck), Honey Burst (very sweet), Tune-O-Matic bridge & tailpiece, single cutaway, gibson "old-style" tuners, and a slim-taper neck (also very sweet)...came with the ugliest hardshell case imaginable...

This fits my music style very well...I play mostly rock, blues, and metal. The treble position is great for crisp leads (think Jimmy Page), and the rythm pickup has a nice warm/rounded tone. I play through a Carvin Legacy 100 watt 1/2 stack with a fulltone deja vibe and a boss metal zone/ibanez tube screamer (depending on my mood).

I expected this guitar to have some problems due to gibsons lack of QC (mailordered from AMS)...I was wrong.
The guitar is flawless...gorgeous finish, great action (maybe a little too low...but easy to fix), and just enough relief in the neck.

The guitar is built like a rock. I expect the finish to take a couple hits and dings, but thats because of my playing style. The strap buttons are a little small though...I think Ill switch to schaller strap locks. I'd go without a backup, but thats only because I can't afford another one...

1996 Les Paul Classic. Pretty much standard Les Paul, 2 humbuckers, separate volume and tone for each (which I prefer). Its neck is thinner than a normal les pauls. The natural burst finish looks good on the standard maple top.
Sound
:9
I like the sound, it's rich and has got alot of bass to it. I've only been playing for about a year, so I guess I don't know that much yet. I play it through a dw labs distortion, then through a big muff (love that pedal), then through a 40 watt peavey amp (yeah, i know, solid state sucks, blah blah blah, I cant afford a tube amp, sorry). I'm giving it a 9 since I have played very many different guitars. It has an ok variety of sounds that it makes, what with two humbuckers and all. Im pretty sure its not noisy, but my amp is, so its hard to tell. It works perfect for what I play, which is basically anything from Led Zeppelin to Rage Against The Machine, except 80's hair metal (ughh).
Action, Fit, & Finish
:10
I got it used from this guy my Dad knows, and it was set up pretty good, except the intonation was off on the high-e string. Other than that it was fine. The top isn't bookmatched exactly, but its just a normal maple top so you can hardly tell. Action was perfect, not too high, not to low, and the natural burst finish looks good, I dont prefer it but im not gonna complain, since it really doesn't matter anyway. It has one tiny scratch near the bottom, but other than that its like new.

I'm sure this guitar could stand live playing, its built like a tank, and weighs about as much. The only reason i would have a backup at a gig is because strings tend to break. I put straplocks on it since the original strap buttons were tiny.

I've only been playing for about a year, so I don't have much. My other guitar is a kramer, which is ok, but doesn't even compare to this. If I were stolen, and I had enough money to get it again, im not sure whether i would or not, since I would probably want to try something different. It is a tad bit expensive, but other than that its a great guitar.

I play all styles of music from slow blues to metal, this guitar can ALMOST get any tone i want. I prefer a strat for blues. I play thru an unmodified Peavey 5150 120w tube head with gain on rhythym at about 5.5 and lead gain on 10. I use a peavey 4 X 12 as well. Thru my shure UHF wireless and dunlop rack crybaby (DCR-1SR) this guitar blows away anyother guitar by far.

My band plays every weekend (Fri. and Sat.) I use it at almost every show, i haven't dropped it and don't want to i try to keep it in perfect condition as long as i can. The hardware and finish will last. I use schaller straplocks to insure that my guitar won't fall. I always take a backup whether i'm using my Les Paul, modified Fender strat, Jackson soloist, or my '68 Fender Mustang. To me, backups are essential just incase a broken string occurs.

I'm 16 years old, I've been playing since I was 10. I have several guitars which i listed earlier. This guitar's tone is so rich and thick if I had to sell all the others I would keep this. If lost or stolen, I don't know how I would save up money again for it but if I could by another I most definately would. I found this a steal next to the Les Paul Standard, I even liked the neck better on the Classic.

She's an absolute work of art. People see it, and then swoon. THEN, I crank 'er up. I play 70s style rock and blues, some metal. I run through a modified Peavey VTM-60 all-tube head with a 412 Celestion cabinet. The ultimate tone. I put nickel covers on both pickups, and tapped the 496R (making it single coil). It has gobs of tone in the bridge, and backing it off in the neck makes it pop like a strat on steroids. Very nice........

I ordered this from my local music store after examining a used one there. Waited 3 weeks to the day. Took it home, played it, nearly died of happiness. It was absolutely perfect. No changes were neccesary. The only flaws that I found were two missing screws on the tuning keys. Easy remedy. Everything else is flawless.

An early retirement from the music business makes it easy for this guitar. But, I'm quite sure that it can take live playing. The nitrocell laquer is doing fine (after 18 months). I replaced it with Straplocks the day I bought it. If my style dictated it, I could easily go back on the road with this baby. But, I just gotta have my Strat there, too.

Here's the good part: Got two REALLY nice letters from Gibson. They really have the PR thing down. I emailed them, asking about pickup covers, where I could buy them, etc. After 2 replies, and a week, I received them, for FREE ! Just for asking ! That rules. I don't feel that I'll ever have to use the lifetime warranty (she gets the Royal Treatment, my girlfriend's jealous), but, having it just reinforces my faith in Gibson.

I've been playing for 21 years, own an American Standard Strat, an Epiphone Les Paul Deluxe (both with Rio Grande Pickups), and an '89 Peavey Tracer Custom, one that they made for lil' ol' me (That one's a TRUE workhorse, BTW). I did my homework, in a big way, before getting this one. I got my home alarm system installed primarily for protecting this guitar, so, I can only say that I would be totaly heartbroken if it were stolen. If I had a line on who it was, I would carve a path of destruction that would make Sherman's March to the Sea look like bicycle tracks. I would suggest that anyone who buys this guitar split that neck pickup. It sounds super nice on clean.

It's basically a copy of a 1960 Standard, with "hot" ceramic magnet pus instead of PAFs or '57s or modern alnicos. I figure the big selling point is the semi-historic angle and the thin '60 neck. It's all well summarized below.
Sound

It sounds great. You can really get a variety, I think, with different amps (Marshall vs. Fender vs. Vox), with plenty of crunch if you want it, and plenty of chime if you want that. A definite variety across the three pickup selections, esp. if you take the time to roll off in the middle position. And totally quite....the humm is bucked.

Here was the really nice surprise. I've had two other Gibsons, a The Paul which was ok but sort of lacking in personality (whatever I mean by that?!), and a Jr. Lite which, aside from the P100s (which were great), basically bit, and which was set up godawfully bad. This one was done very well......wrong for me (9s, and WAY too low), but I put on 10s and tweaked, and now it's fine for me. I'm sure it would have been great for a real lead player, but I'm not and like a bit higher action and a bit heavier string. And the nut was actually finished and done reasonably well (just some minor light filing for the slightly heaver strings needed), the intonation was perfect and only needed tweaking with the new strings, string and pu height and truss rod only needed minor adjustment with the 10s. And I've only found one minor finish flaw, and I may have done it. It's a Heritage Cherry Sunburst, and it's beautiful. Some file marks on the fretboard...that's probably the only significant fault I can find. The frets themselves are well finished and even. Given what I got with the Jr. Lite, I was VERY happy with this one.

There was no warranty registration card in the case. I emailed Gibson and had a response in 24 hrs. That's the good news. I also called them today to ask what gauge strings are the John Lennon Revolution Casinos are shipped with. The guy, who obviously was trying and seemed to mean well, told me to put on 12 or 13s, phosphore bronze. I think he thought I meant a JE160E....which probably shouldn't have phosphores either......oh well. I guess that's batting .500? Like the set ups on new Gibsons?

I've been playing a long time, to little avail, and own too many guitars, and probably didn't need, but wanted, an LP. I've tried twice before with the The Paul and the Jr. Lite. So far it looks like 3rd time's the charm. I play enough blues/blues-rock and Oasis to get some use out of it, it's well made and beautiful too look at, to listen to, and to play. I think, given the price, the Classic is the one to buy....Gold Top or a burst if you can still get them (and I did, obviously), you end up with a real LP with some historic vibe at a reasonable price. Even if you don't want the ceramic buckers, to mod it wouldn't take you much into the Standard price range, and you get that nice slim-taper neck (odd.....I ususally like fatter necks, but this one's great).

This is a new 1999 Les Paul Classic, Honeyburst w/ jumbo frets and a slimmer neck than the LP Standards. I bought this guitar because I loved the way it sounded, played and looked. I liked the feel of the neck much better than the LP Standards, of which I have owned three over the last 10 years. this guitar also has the "aged look" which I also find very cool. I give the features an 8 since it basically has everything I'd expect from a Gibson. Any more than this on a Les Paul and it's no longer a Les Paul.

My style is 70's and 80's rock, blues and jazz. I use a Peavey classic 50 2-12" and a marshall JCM 800 dual channel head and 4-12"cab. The only EFX I like are reverb and some delay. I really loved the sound of this guitar from the first plug in. Someone had it right when they said "... just think Guns N Roses", - very articulate bridge and neck, but very loud and punchy and a little nasty, yet it's still smooth. Generally, a solid sound.

This is the part where I'm really friggin' pissed off: Though for the most part the guitar fairs well in other areas, I find that Gibson's quality standards are so lacking that I always dread the decision to buy any of their guitars. I am speaking specifically of the neck, nut, fingerboard and fret jobs that come out of their factory. This Les Paul was no exception. The first few frets on the high E string buzzed at the store. I told the sales guy and he adjusted the truss rod a bit. Most of the buzzing went away, so I figured when I get it home I'll do a complete setup the way I like it. (and MY actions are always very high). Well after I bought it I realized that the fret buzz would not completely go away and that the frets were too high in the lower area. After having this guitar for two days, it had to be sent out for the repairs which means for me, almost a two week wait. This kind of crap is unacceptable for a bran- new $1400. guitar! Should I have known better? Well you might say so, but what about that magazine ad that says "Only a Gibson is good enough"? In about 12 yrs. I have seen gibson's with mostly bad fretjobs, unlevel fingerboards, truss rods that either won't loosen up enough or won't tighten enough, tuners not installed straight, cheap strap pins, microphonic pickups, and more. Now I would expect this from a $500. guitar, but not ones in the $1400.-$2000. price ranges! Lastly, I mentioned to my dealer how I've got a $270. Ibanez electric, a $250. Alvarez acoustic, and a Yamaha acoustic, all w/ perfect fretjobs out of the box, and he tells me that it's because those companies use machines to fit and level the frets, where Gibson does them by hand. Well if that's true, then why the hell are we paying Gibson alot more for crappier work? Let's have it done by a machine if it's better and cheaper!!! 3- and that's generous for these "big-Leaguers".
Reliability/Durability

As with basically most Gibson solidbodies, you can beat down a barn with one of these axes, rebuild it in a day, and still tune up in time for the evening ho-down. Anyone who says these gutars are flimsy oughta get a checkup. Other than crappy fretwork on this guitar, It'll last 'till the barn caves in and longer. Hardware's nickel so soon it should look like the rest of the guitar- worn-in. Strap buttons gotta git replaced. Tuners look cheap, but remember- these babies are 1960 models, and back then this is what they had.

I've been playing for 21 years now. When I was a kid I DREAMED of one day owning a Gibson Les Paul that was everything it seemed to be in the rockstar posters: Jimmy Page, Peter Frampton, Ace Frehley, Thin Lizzy, Jeff Beck, Clapton, etc. But by now I've had five and seen many more and have yet to find one that measures up. I think that these guitars look and sound so incredible, but for me, I get better value in Fender who seems to have about a 90% quality standard... either that or just put up with Gibson and deal with it. This Guitar still gets a high rating because everything else on the guitar is fine to me. I'd probably still buy another, but still be prepaired to send it out for some work right away. I wouldn't say you need a backup with Les Pauls, They don't even break in for five years! Which reminds me- Gibson's limited lifetime warrantee is somewhat redeeming, if that's any consolation.

What we have here is your basic Les Paul Classic, made in 1999. It's got the Maple top with the Mahogany back. Single-ply binding around the body top and fingerboard. A Rosewood, 22 fret fingerboard on top of a Mahogany, 1960 "slim taper" neck (very sweet) with the "aged" trapezoid inlays that look like somebody took a major piss on them. It's got the ABR/Stop bar bridge/tailpiece config. All metal hardware is nickle finish. The two volume, two tone pots are the older "tophat" style, instead of the speed knobs found on the LP Standard, and they are very cool- looking. The pickups are the hottest Gibson makes, a 496R at the neck and a 500T at the bridge. My guitar has the Honeyburst finish that is drop-dead beautiful...no flame or anything, just "plain grain" with a few birds-eyes here and there.

Sound? SOUND!! What the hell, it's a Les Paul for God's sake! It sounds like a Les Paul should , only hotter with the kick-ass pickups. I play Rock and Metal...this guitar has big balls. From the factory, the action is very sweet...I hope to make it even tastier when it gets set up. It's strung with 9's from the factory, so 10's and some minor pickup and neck and bridge adjustments are in order. The only two flaws so far (I've had it for 2 and a half months) are that: 1) One of the pots had been "forced". When you turned it down all of the way, just very slight turn pressure beyond zero would open the pickup volume all of the way again. This was fixed by the dealer at no cost in an afternoon. 2) The tuners on the 5th and 6th string are not holding tune to my liking. I would replace them with other style Gibson or other brand tuners if I could find some that don't require any modifications (drilling) to the headstock. In all fairness to Gibson, however, I do tend to play rather hard.

The Les Paul is not so much a guitar as it is a freakin' weapon, both phisically and tonally. It is rock hard solid, and you can bash brains out by either cranking it or by swinging it! This is not a guitar for the meek or mellow. Why, oh why doesn't Gibson ship these with strap-locks as standard issue? I would gig without a back-up because I sold my back-up to help finance my purchase of this guitar. Fortunately, The Les Paul is solid enough to stand alone. Take care of the finish (wipe down after each gig or rehearsal) and polish often). It should look great

I got the deal of the century. I was looking for a gold top, but when I saw this beauty, I had to have it. I have wanted a Les Paul forever, and when I went looking for one, I wanted the Les Paul Classic for two main reasons: the hotter pickups and the slim-taper neck. I have not been dissapointed. I play through a Mesa Dual Rec and a Peavy PA with a Line 6 POD. They both sound great. I was ready to walk into a local music store and pay $1300 for a new Les Paul Classic, so I would definately buy this guitar again, at full price! This Guitar is THE guitar for seroius rock!!!

This is an outstanding guitar, never been more happy. A vintage reissue of a 1960 paul, it has some different features than the standard. A thin/ slim tapered neck. The 496r and 500t humbuckers are much hotter than the standard. They offer higher output and better highs and lows. The only other noticable difference then the standard is the aged trapazoid inlays which are mother of pearl. The classic shape and beauty are still there. My guitar is a cherry sunburst which I like the best. The neck is very fast and has a good feel. The bridge hight can be lowered to your personal specs as well as the humbuckers so you can get what you want from it. The same four knob control and 3 way selector switch still applies. All Les Pauls have these same controls except for the Jimmy Page sig. model(has coil tapping abilities),which is the ultimate Les Paul made in the past couple of decades. But those are very expensive and the extra features are nice, but not terribly usefull. To any les paul fan or any guitarist, I would suggest this guitar. There are only 2 reasons I gave it a 9. I dont like the machine heads and the plastic piece around the output jack gets hairline cracks easilly.
Sound
:10
My music style is very diverse and this guitar suits me very well. The style I use most is of Led Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix, The who and late 60s early 70s rock and blues. This is excellent for that, and is a very similar guitar to what Jimmy Page used ( except his was a real 59'Les Paul, the ultimate). It goes well with a Marshall valve amp to get those crunch sounds, and great sustain and rich distortion. Blues is another favorite style. Buddy Guy, BB King, etc. This gets very warm, brilliant tones. and still gets the great searing highs, growling lows and fantastic mids without huge distortion. The only thing wrong with it is that ( and this is the case with most all humbuckers) it cant get that SRV, Texas blues grit. Highs dont sound just like Stevies and that is my only complaint. If you need only that get a fender strat with single coils, for everything else though, this is great. Clean comes in great and is very versitile,(much more than a fender) with acoustic songs. I mentioned before that this is a high output very hot guitar, and it gets incredible, well defined metal tones. Not quite as heavy as a jackson or ibenez, but thats not what im looking for. It does scream and handles distortion very well. Randy Rhoads would often use a Les Paul, and thats as heavy as ill get. When you get it new, there might be a buzzing sound coming from the bridge. That has to do with the change of humidity in your home. Take it to a guitar store or a tech, and theyll fix it easilly. Over all this is a great guitar, very little noise, great rich sound, and suits a wide variety of music.

Gibson Les Pauls are known for there looks. This guitar I believe that they only make now in a gold top. If I had had to deal with this, then I would give this a lower rating but the cherry sunburst I got was great, and there was no problem with factory flaws. Gibson is very good about that. The pickups were adjusted well for me from the case, but I wanted to spec them to suit me better. I lowered the bridge hieght from the body and positioned the pickups to get the option of a single coil sound when the guitar is pushed. The wood I got was flawless, and very high in quality, the wood and shape have to do with the brightness and depth of sound so this was important to me and this guitar delivered. It looks great, a very nice sunburst and finish. The Gibson company gives handmade quality. The only reason for the 9/10 is that the buzzing is very annoying. It is easilly fixed and most stores will fix it free if you bought it from them.
Reliability/Durability

Its built solid and with amazing quality. I never need a backup. Its finish is very good, but it is made of wood and is obviously prone to scratch and dent if not taken care of, but so are all guitars. The one thing I do suggest is a strong strap because this is very heavy. Much heavier than that of a fender or Gibson Sg. With a cheap strap the part that latches to the strap button could slip off. But this guitar is perfectly durable.

I compared it to top of the line fenders ( SRV, Clapton, Jeff Beck strats and teles), Gibson SG's, Jacksons, Ibenez, and just about everything. It beats ever non vintage guitar, because of its diversity, warmth and amazing tones. For Rock, its best through a Marshall amp. For clean, a fender deville or delux. If It was ever lost, I would definitely replace it. Its been great to me. Try one out, and im sure it will make you a fan of Gibson Les Pauls.
