Incredible 60's sound. You can play any style on this guitar.
Rock, jazz, blues, country, you name it. I grew up with George Harrison as my idol, this guitar brings back such great memories of him and The Beatles (Help!, Beatles '65) The sounds that this guitar can produce with all the settings and controls is truly amazing.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This guitar was set up perfect from the factory. They do a terrfic job in Japan building these Gretschs. It was all tuned and ready to go. I didn't have to do anything, but, plug it in. The finish is beautiful.
I must admit, looking at the neck, where it attachs to the body, took a little getting used to. Neck kind of "floats" above the body. The fretboard action is excellent, so it doesn't matter. It is the way all Gretschs are made.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar is built like a tank. Very strong/solid. Sharp-looking chrome hardware, it sparkles. I believe this guitar will last forever. I'm not a professional, just play for fun. So I'm not luggy it from gig to gig. But, if you do, never fear, this Gretsch will hold up just fine.

Customer Support : 10
I have never had any problems with Fender(I also own some Strats and a Tele). I have always gotten prompt response to any questions, or concerns that I've posed to them, in the past, either, on line or by phone. I haven't had any problems with this guitar, so I have not needed to contact them. Like Fender, Gretsch is a top notch outfit, with an incredible history. A first class company.

Overall Rating : 10
As I've said, I just play for fun. Started in 1965 when I was 14 and have been playing on and off since then. I use a Fender Champion 25 amp for all my guitars. Like my other guitars if this one got lost, I would replace it. I have always wanted a Gretsch Tennessee G6119 1962-HT like George Harrison. It is such a 60's icon instrument, so many great bands had one, Byrds, Gerry and the Pacemakers spring to mind. It is definitely worth the money. You'll get a great sounding, well built, flawless guitar, that you won't want to put down. Enjoy!!

Unreal. Awesome!!! Bell like tones with great definition and tone.Vry articulate and can give you George Harrison's Beatles For Sale tone exactly. I didn't think it was going to be this spot on. Very much the"Great Gretsch Sound"! Shimmering highs and deep crackin lows with tones of room for adjustment.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Set up like a dream when it arrived. No issues with cosmetics or hardware. All great. Strings were terrible. Could not intonate or keep them in tune well. Changed with 11s Daddario roundwounds. Takes a little time to set up the bridge to intonate. Once it was done its been perfect!!Some guys lobe the flatwounds. They would be great but I like the rounds. Versatile yet still gives you Beatles For Sale realy well. Frets -good, neck beautiful, pick ups adjusted great. No adjustments needed. Nut cut well.I won't detract because of the strings. Tha's nothing really. I think they were on for some time anyway.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Guitar is sturdy, strong and will be a blast to play. I'd play without backup. Seems very versatile and is quite a looker too!

Customer Support : 10
Fender has done superb with these Gretsch guitars. I was hesitant to order this from Musician's Friend but you know what, its the second peice of gear and everything so far has been great.

Overall Rating : 10
Playing for 28 years 8 other guitars currently including Rics, Gretschs and Hofners. Had 74 Les Paul and Fenders etc. This is the best I have had. I mean that . Its great and has the 60s vibe. I would never lose it but if it was stolen it would be replaced immediatly!

everythings been covered, finish etc.The tone swithing and stand-by is what really makes this thing easy to navigate and keep settings

Sound : 10
Previously heard of noisy electronics,This one has none.Smooth and consistant. The sound out of this thing is "forget the vintage sound* that has been pounded to death. The 60's are over for about 40 years even though I still play alot of it,this beast can sound beyond any conventional sound with a beautiful spacious bright ringing tone that cannot be duplicated by any other manufacturer. From a beautiful bright with individual tone to tastefully driven

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
There was none.Your on your own with out of the box with instructs.I took it in and was set up on the mark. The shop said I got a "good one".Apparently gretsch has been known for problems in past and present with some of their products. This one is unmistakeable. No flaws aside from set up deal. It's 5 and could have been ten with a little effort by Gretsch or Musicians Fr.Mabe they leave it to your individual preference but this was way off with the high fret buzzing

Reliability/Durability : 7
I would depend on it since anyone that has a Gretsch(Rock Stars included) seem to take special care and precautions with them.No dropping them or slamming them into amps.Watch when these guys are playing a Gretsch. It's too beautiful to trash

Playing on and off about 35 years,Went through Gibson,Fender, old Baldwin and a load of generics, previously had a Tennessean and now a Rick 12 ,But for a grand you won't find a similar beauty like this.In sound ,function and outright cool factor my Rick doesn't come that close.Forget the past and hook up to chorus and a few effects and this thing will bury the competetion.light, great action, great unduplicated sound.Only a Rick will sound like a Rick and only a Gretsch will sound like a Gretch.Great value, and would definetely replace it despite what my guitar geek set-up guy says about Gretsch(I heard that 30 yrs ago)

For my style of music it does what I need it to do and much more.
VoxVT100 You get any sound you want with this TR. I must say for being made in Japan they do one hell of a job on this Gretsch I check it over when I receive it and it is MINT 110%. There is nothing to dislike about this Gretsch if someone that would dislike this guitar then they know nothing about guitars.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The gretsch was set-up great Gary at North Coast Music knows how a guitar needs to be set-up the action is just what I wanted in a guitar. When you buy any guitar or amp at NCM you will receive the PERFECT guitar or amp without any FLAWS. The finish is out of this world you hate to touch the Tenn. Rose cause it's so nice looking.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Yhis guitar will stand up to any live playing why would anyone buy a guitar if it would not last one gig. Hardware will out last me and the finish will last if you take care of it. When you pay ove $500.00 on a guitar and you don't think it will last during a night out on the town then I think your not doing your hoomework when buying a guitar. (NO I WOULD NOT BRING A BACK UP)

Customer Support : 9
Have not delt with Gretsch company yet.

I been playing over 40 yrs. I have (2) Rics 360 & 620 and re-issue 1954 Febder Strat. I love how this gutar plays, the action the sound you don't want to put is down. I have played many of good guitars but this is one of the best if not the best playing guitar out there.

Made in Japan in 2002, says "Tennessean" on the pickguard, laminated maple body with dark-stained rosewood fretboard, Bigsby tailpiece. More than enough features for the average guitarist.

Sound : 10
Scroll down and read the first review of this guitar. That was me, three years ago. I sold the guitar for one with Filtertrons and always regretted it, so I bought another one last month on Ebay. Don't get me wrong, Filtertrons are still my favorite Gretsch pickups, but I really missed the sound of these Hilotrons. True, their output is a great deal lower, but they have clarity and a "ring" to them that even the Filtertrons don't have.

I also owned a great Dynasonic-equipped (older-style single coil) Gretsch, which sounded like this one, but with more output. One thing I've noticed with these single-coil Gretsches is that the neck pickup seems to have twice the output of the bridge pickup. The bridge pickup on this guitar is bright and twangy, but doesn't have much output. In fact, if I want to use it for a solo, I have to crank the master volume considerably. This was the case with the Dynasonics, also.

The neck pickup is, on its own, very bassy and powerful. Chords are rich and full, single notes are warm and clear. It can be a little bit too bass-heavy for some rhythm parts, though. Again, similar to the Dynasonics.

The best setting is with both pickups on. Wow, just beautiful. This is the classic tone you'll hear on "Beatles For Sale" and "Help". Of all the Gretsch guitar tones George gave us, this is my favorite. Rich and full, but every single note in the chord rings out.

You either like Hilotrons, or you don't, it's that simple. Filtertrons are the most versatile and are considered by many to be THE Gretsch sound, Dynasonics are higher-output and probably better suited for rockabilly, but I think these Hilotrons are VERY underrated. True, they're not high-output, but you can always crank your amp, if you need to. Through a Vox AC-30? Forget it...you'll never play another guitar again.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Absolutely gorgeous. As with most pre-Fender Gretsches, the switches are a little bit scratchy when you move them. It hasn't affected playability, but I'll deduct one point just for honesty's sake.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Other than the switches, I don't see any other problems. Be careful though, it IS a hollowbody.

Customer Support : No Opinion
The old Gretsch company's service was notoriously bad, but many say Fender's isn't much better. Never dealt with them myself, so I don't know.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for 20 years, now. Like I said before, I had this guitar once, then let it go. That will not happen this time! I've learned my lesson. Never sell a Gretsch! My other one is a 6122-62 with TV Jones Classic "Filtertrons". I like the filtertrons better, but this guitar is just a sweetheart! There are no other ones like it. I don't see how it would be necessary to switch to TV Jones Hilotrons, but they are slightly higher in output, so that may be one benefit. The stock pickups really do sound like the old ones, though. Ok, enough rambling....just get one, already!!

Jap Re-Issue of Chet's Tennessean; Used by His Majesty, George Harrison after the Country Gent was destroyed - we all know the story. Features and the other stuff have been eloquently described below. I won't waste your time on repeating others' wordage.

Sound : 10
The tone is truly amazing. I acquired this 2002 reissued from my good pal and band mate Jon, The Tone Junkie. He has been chasing the Beatles tone for years and informed me that this axe, equipped properly with a good set of flat wounds, will in fact do the "Beatles For Sale" era tone (listen to George on Honey Don't and I Don't Want to Spoil the Party). Well guys, my bro Jon The Tone Junkie is correct. This is exactly the tone. We've played this guitar through lots of amps, AC15, AC30's, Fenders, etc. It is truly excellent. I haven't had the pleasure to experience an original 6119, but who cares. I play the Beatles CD, then I play this axe.... same sound exactly. Can't wait to use it more in live performances, but need to get a bit more comfortable with the axe first. I do have a bit of a problem with the output of the HiLoTrons being much lower output than the pickups on the other guitars I gig with (early 70's Les Paul with Mini's and Ric 660-12), so I will - as other have - likely opt eventually for Mr. Jone's version of the pups - not for the tone change, but simply to equalize things so that the sound guy doesn't freak out in the middle of a set due to having to chase my levels (which is exactly what happened the one time I pulled it out during a set recently). But, overall the sound is superb and I give it the highest ranks. Congrats Gretsch, you got it just right.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Electronics are just a tad bit noisy on pup changes, and the tone 3 way switch is sticky, but not enough to merit replacing. I am going to pull a couple of points off here. I do think Gretsch could have done better on this. Action was great. Given that I mostly play an older Les Paul in live situations and I have gotten use to resting my hand on the bridge (I know... not good), I found that my right hand tended to move the bridge around a bit. I am too old and set in my playing style to change that now, so, I took the axe to my local luthier and had it secured with some 2 sided sticky tape. The product he used will easily come off in the event that I decided to sell the guitar someday and the next buyer wants it gone. The finish is very nice, no aesthetic QC issues are noted.

Reliability/Durability : 9
I have only played this guitar live on one song of one set and dealt with the rath of our sound guy due to the levels being so different than my 30 year old Paul. So.... I can't really give you guys a "reliability" rating. But, I can say that the axe is very well constructed and I "believe" it will stand up to gigging. Looking above at the question here that asks: "Would you use it on a gig without a backup?" My answer is "Whoever writes these questions, hasn't ever played for money." No, absolultely never would I play any gig without a backup - doesn't matter how solid the guitar is. But, again, I do believe that the 6119-62HT is as well-constructed as you can expect a guitar to be and I do believe that it will provide reliable service.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing for 35 years, played in lots of bands and the like. Currently I am playing in a band at our 5,000 member church that plays for the youth (truly the most rewarding thing I have ever done with music), I play in a Christian Band that is fairly active and also in a 60's cover band that does lots of Beatles, Hollies, etc. covers. I have lots of guitars (Anderson, Tele, Strats, Martins, a 67 Epi FT-79 Texan, a couple of Pauls), but my gigging setup is simply my 70's LP Goldtop, my Ric 660-12 (with a newer LP Double Cutaway as a backup). I will probably move this guitar into more regular service after the TV Jones pup mod. I am rating the 6119-62HT a 9. It's really stong in the tone department, the low output makes it a challenge (unless it's the only guitar you're working) if you want to change axes quickly during a set. I think the switches could have been slicker - otherwise I'd give it it a 10.

I got a 2003 post Fender made Gretsch 6119-62HT Tennessee Rose. Unfortunately, the name on the pickguard is Tennessee Rose, not Tennessean, due to some dispute with Chet Atkins. I think everyone knows the specs.

Sound : 10
Sounded great at the shop through a Vox AC30 at the store and sounds great at home as well. I have to play through a POD XT and Johnson J-Station in the apartment, but still very nice! Everyone talks of the switch to TV Jones pickups, but for the moment I don't see a need. Then again, I haven't played a vintage Gretsch... The sounds coming out of this guitar can go from anywhere to bell ringing type clean to overdriven gritty. Although it has a single coil, the sounds are fatter and fuller than my tele, probably because it is a hollow body. Nice ring!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
When I got it it was a little buzzy, strings too low. FIxed that and now it is fine. Can't really ask for super low action on a semi-hollow guitar like this one, so I am not complaining. The finish is beautiful. Even my grandmother(who knows nothing about guitars) said "what a beautiful instrument." Every time I take it out of the case, I grin and think "oooooohhh yessss."

I have been playing 10 years. I have a Les Paul Custom and a Telecaster. I desperately needed some change of tone, something that would inspire me to play more. This one has done it. The sounds are fat and warm. Play jazz, country, rockabilly with it. I was debating whether to get a new or vintage. Didn't want to deal with uncertainties with vintages. Couldn't find one I liked either. It doesn't matter because I am VERY satisfied with this baby!! Maybe I will consider TV Jones pups, but not yet.

This was made in September of 2002. I played one in 1966/67 so I have a frame of reference to the "original". As far as the hardware this is as close to the 60's as you can get without the bad hair. So for features it has everything you loved about it back in the day! And if you did not like it - you got that too!!

Sound : 10
I know the Gretsch marketing buzz is about " that great Gretsch sound" well with this baby they have overachieved the target. The sound is MAGNIFICANT. That is from my Fender Princeton Chorus. I shudder to think how it will sound out of a tube amp. Will probably be worth the cost of a divorce!!

The HiLoTron's are really fine. They were the reason for my interest in this guitar from the begining. I hoped they would give the sound I always liked so much about this instrument fom long ago. Gretsch nailed it!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Perfection. Gary ,at North Coast Music, is quick to say they come in great from Gretsch. I don't doubt him but I think he does a bit of magic before we mortals see them.

NOTHING wrong with this guitar. Came home and started on "Tiket to Ride" and lots of Chet stuff out of the box. I have (too) many guitars and it takes time to adjust to them - this one took about 13 seconds. Like a hand in an old glove. It just fits!!

Forget the finish - it's perfect.

Started playing when Kennedy was president. I own a few very good Martin's, Fenders, hand made classical and another wonderful Gretsch. This guitar has the SOUND of a GREAT Tennessean. I love the way my bad Chet playing sounds on this axe. I can hear Chet - not in my style but in the tone!!

These HiLoTron's are great. Even, pure and clean. Thanks for doing this - I can do anything I want on this guitar. Fun.

I purchased this guitar from NorthCoast Music for about 1600.00 It was manufactured in 2002 in Japan. It has 22 Frets with a laminated top using simulated F holes. It is Dark burgundy but the wood, rock maple, is different in grain from the original back in 62. It has Asian electronics and i am going to switch them for TV Jones American Hand Made pickups and wiring harness which will make this guitar a must keep forever keeper! The Hilotron pickups are copies of TV Jones but while they sound great dont have much out put but if you turn your amp up it really sings. Im using a VOX AC15. The Neck is Rosewood stained ebony just like the original..remember this was an economy model in 62. It has open Grovers just like the original. The Neck has a zero fret and neoclassic inlays just like the oroginal..infact the only difference is no Cht Akins signature on the pick guard...this is about the only Gretsch made that is what I would call a real reissue!

Sound : 10
It has that Great gretscgh sound...and I hear it is even better with the TV Jones pick ups!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
This guitar is built better than a gibson custom shop guitar...I have a Les Paul 40th anniversary and its finish leaves much to be desired..I also have an SG special which the customshop sent with the wrong dials and pickup switch..but this Gretsch..blew me away when I opened the case. It is a much better built guitar than the original. it came with 14s strings and they played like butter..I had it reset for 13s. The Switches are a little noisy but the more I play it the less noisy they become

Reliability/Durability : 9
So Far So Good Id play it all night on a gig without worry. But my SG would be there for a few heavy songs. The Strap buttons unscrew you put on the strap and screw it back on and Viola..it on there

2002 Japanese....All features are covered above..mine is no different.
I did, however switch the pickups for TV Jones HiLoTrons. The originals were OK..In fact I was suprised..But for that "Great Gretsch Sound" Tom has nailed it. I also have TV Jones Filtertrons on my 62 reissue Country Gent.

Sound : 9
I use it mainly for good old Rock and Roll..it fits the bill 100% Sounds really great on Carl Perkins tunes..Has a nice full sound.. as well as a clear high setting..the "mud" setting is useless. I heard that TV Jones makes wiring harnesses for them that will do away with the muddy end of it. Well worth looking into..I play it through a Vox Valvetronix 120 as well as a Fender Blues DeVille. To me, Gretsch's sound their best when full and clear.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
It is put together realy well, the Factory set action was OK. I had it set up to suit me..It did not take alot of adjusting. I put in Switchcraft switches, as the Japanese ones tend to be a bit noisy andnot as good as they should be on a guitar with this pricetag.

Reliability/Durability : 9
I play it in a live setting quite a bit, but only for 4-5 songs in the entire set. I have seen them get "sweat" stained if not wiped down after playing. The strap buttons are not all that good...typical Gretsch. But again, for me, not a problem..Very dependable..But I would never play without a back-up..But I can't see it being a problem..I would put on strap locks if it was my only one.

I have a brand new 2002 Grestch 6119-62HT with HiLoTron pickups! I just got it today so sorry about the extra excitement. It was made in Japan. Included a nice hardshell case with a key, a cool little tool (I have yet to find out what to use it for), and some other fancy paperwork that tells ya all about it. The neck is ebony stained rosewood and is very nice (not too thin, not too thick, not too wide, and not too narrow). I have no complaints with the bar style bridge. The tuners aren't great but they do the job.

Sound : 10
I play lots of stuff, mostly classics like the Beatles, Dylan, Eric Clapton kind of stuff. Ocasionally I hang out with my metal head friends we play some Slipknot, Nirvana, Metallica, but I don't really care for that stuff (it gives me a headache). So, let's stick with the classics. All I can say really is that it's perfect for it! On one pickup it's got that strat twang on the low notes, but when you get up high it sounds even twangier! Only thing it lacks is the sustain of a les paul or a strat. When you use the neck pickup it has a nice mellow sound. Can you say, "'Til There Was You"? I know that was the Country Gent but this is why I love the guitar to death. It sounds like the Gent, it sounds like a strat, it sounds like anything you can imagine except for maybe a les paul or ES 335. It just doesn't have that beef. It's not only good for oldies though, I've played a few of my own songs, a few Phish, OAR, etc. songs on it and it sounds wonderful.
The sound out of these HiLo trons is just amazing! I adivse you to go a store and try one of these out, I don't think you'll be dissapointed unless you wanna play metal. (oh yeah, it sounds pretty good distorted too, just don't crank the distortion too much or you'll get a little weird ring in the notes).

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The guitar was set up pretty well. The action was great minus a little buzz, bur it plays so well I wouldn't give a rats ass if it buzzed like a bumble bee (well I guess that's overdoing it). It was intonated perfectly, the finish was flawless, the pickups were great, the controls were great. The only bummer is the tone selector. It makes a lot of noise when you switch it. My solution in a gig would be to hit the standy switch then switch the tone then just turn off stanby.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Everything looks good to me so far. I'll give ya more on this when it's a few months old.

It's a great guitar! I don't know what else to say. I also own an Epiphone Union Jack Supernova and I play my guitar through a Vox AD120. I absolutely LOVE the Vox amp. The Supernova is great, but not as beautiful or as toneful (I think I just made that word up) as the gretsch. If it were stolen or lost I'd probably sit down and cry and cry and cry after I shit my pants. Then I'd make a lot of money and get another one. I love the finish. It is absolutely gorgeous!!! It's like burgondy but a bit translucent. Absolutely beautiful!!! If ur a Beatles fan or you like the sound of a guitar that can do a strat, a gent, or it's own beautiful unique sound TRY ONE!!!

Reissue of the 1962 Gretsch Tennessean with HiLo-trons. Made in Japan in 2002. Laminated maple body, solid maple neck with ebony (maybe rosewood, can't remember) fingerboard. Standby switch, pickup selector, tone switch, one volume control for each pickup, master volume. Bridge is the bar bridge like they put on in the late 50's/early 60's. Not sure what brand the tuners are, maybe Grovers. Oh yeah, I almost forgot...a big, beautiful chrome BIGSBY!!!

Sound : 10
I like the typical Gretsch Filtertron sound, but the extra twang of the Hilotron is something you just can't beat. Listen to the whole Beatles For Sale album (especially "Words of Love") and you'll get a good idea of what this guitar sounds like. I think these pickups reproduce the sound of the originals very well. TV Jones makes Hilotrons, but I don't know what they sound like. It's worth noting, though, that these pickups are, in fact, made with alnico magnets, instead of the ceramic ones used in the stock Filtertrons, these days. I played a regular Tennessee Rose with the stock ceramic Filtertrons, and these Hilotrons just blew it away. Actually, you can get some Setzer-like tones out of these Hilotrons if you really crank it. Hilotrons are simply single-coil versions of the Filtertron, so it kinda makes sense. Overall, an absolutely killer country-rock tone that no other guitar could ever match.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
This is one beautiful guitar. I wasn't prepared when I opened the case; I knew the finish was darker on this one, but man, what a beautiful guitar! If you want to get noticed, this (or any Gretsch, for that matter) is the guitar for you! Gary at North Coast Music set this guitar up for me, and it plays like a dream. Nice low action, fast neck, and stays in tune very well, provided you don't wail on the Bigsby too much. The only flaw I can see is the tone switch. It makes a not-so-subtle pop when you move it. The other two positions make the guitar sound like mud, so I don't used it much, anyway. Everything else seems rock-solid

Reliability/Durability : 9
I think this guitar will stand the test of time. It's a hollowbody, so you do have to be careful. As long as you don't bash it against something, or drop it, I think it'll be ok. I think this would be an awesome guitar to play live and you wouldn't need a backup. I would take one along in case a string broke, just because I've never changed a string on a guitar with a Bigsby.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've heard horror stories about Gretsch customer service, but haven't had to deal with them, myself. I say just give 'em a chance, if you have a problem with the guitar. I think the warranty is for 1 year, but I'm not sure. I'd have to go look at the certificate of authenticity that came with it.

Overall Rating : 10
I've always wanted a Gretsch and now I've got one. I could not be happier. Rickenbackers and Gretschs are my absolute favorite guitars, not only because I'm a huge fan of the Beatles, but because they are really quality guitars. I admit I was kind of leary about buying a Gretsch, because they're made in Japan, but they really out-did themselves with this one. Besides, who really cares where it was made, it's a Gretsch! If this one was stolen, I would be crestfallen. Death and sorrow would surround the unfortunate soul who dared steal this guitar from me. I can't think of anything I don't like about this guitar. If you like Gretsches, but aren't crazy about the way most of them sound with the ceramic Filtertrons, check this one out. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
