for hard rock and metal this guitar nails it. stock pickups DO NOT need to be changed. on e of the guitars came with emg passive style pickups, the other came with seymore duncan style pickups. there is a video on you tube of a guy playing one stock that he picked uo for 89.00!!!!
he even played a little jazz and the guiatr ripped!
the sounds can be very versatile but this guitar us meant to ROCK OUT!

being an over 20 yuear old guitar i do all my own setups etc. this guitar has those kahler style roller cam bridges. a real piece of work to setup if you plan on using the tremolo. i blocked the trem on one of the guitars and then spent the good part of an hour setting up the second to use the trem.

Pretty much what everyone else has already said. Mine looks like it started out white and is now a cream color with black pickguard, knobs, etc. Has everything I need to noodle around the house with friends. Came with pleather gig bag shaped like the guitar.
Sound
:

I play through a blues junior with boss distortion/overdrive and it sounds great. Clean sounds just as good with a slight hum. The guy where I bought it played it through an old Marshall and it sounded better. Can go from clean to heavy distortion pretty much on it's own. I pay at Neil Young, Van Morrison, and other classic rock.

The guitar is about 20 years old so it has its share of dings and chips. No problem for me. The triangular shaped piece that goes on the headstock and the tremelo are missing and the tone knob is missing and frozen in place. Other than that it is in fair shape and for $140 it plays and sounds better than many guitars I've played costing a lot more. The frets are in good shape as are the neck, bridge and pickups. It looks like someone painted the back of the neck a sick light purple and that finish is wearing off. If it doesn't wear off soon I am going to scrape it off. Action is a little high but that can be adjusted.

I believe everything that is missing or broken is already missing or broken. As I don't gig, reliability really doesn't matter. If it breaks down, I'll just play one of my other guitars and see about getting it fixed.

Wouldn't consider calling the company about the guitar even if it exploded.

Been playing about 6 years. Played in the early '70's in the army but quit to raise kids. Also own an American Strat, Epi 335 (with Gibson classic LP pickups), and a Martin. If it were lost or stolen I wouldn't look for another one. From what I've read they are pretty rare.

I've heard these were made in Japan in the late 80's. they are 21 fret solid neck-thru body Rhodes style v H/H one vol,one tone and 3-way switch. I have three of these one has the original p/u's and the other 2 have mighty-mite mother buckers and are set-up as near to identical as I can get them. The one I am keeping original still has the crappy weak spring khaler knock off locking trem. system the other 2 have khaler 2300's all 3 came with a gig-bag but I upgraded to h/s cases for all. I have 2 that came with rose wood f/b and 1 w/ ebony f/b.

All three sound great either through a 25watt practice amp or blowin their hair back outa the 4x12's!!!! The stock one rocks just as hard and crunchy as the upgraded ones!!!

The factory set up is very good and wasnt to hard at all to up-grade all 3 are perfect in spec with each other. The only flaw out of the box is they had that crappy bridge!(easy fix if you got the$$$$$ to spend on real khalers...)

These things ROCK!!!! This is my main ride and both of my back- ups!!!! The finish is very durable but I love them so much I try not to scratch em up!

The first one I bought new in 1988 it was under warranty. I sent the bridge off for an over-haul right before the 2yrs were up they were very fast, but I honestly beleive they sent me a new bridge instead of re-spinging and tightening the old one. I ain't bitch'n bout dat!!!

One of A Kind. Actually Burnsides were made in Rhode Island USA. Bought it brand new in late '86- early '87. 21 fret rosewood fingerboard, stock Burnside humbuckers, volume, tone, 3-way toggle. Mahogany Rhodes style body, really cool deep purple finish. I agree the original Bridge was a nightmare...some kind of Kahler type. I ordered 2 replacements from Burnside before much work was done.
Only came with gig bag.... but a cool one, kinda looked like a dinosaur when standing up :)

This is hands down the best guitar I have ever owned, and I have had many. I play original rock...used to play Metal, Goth you name it. The Lance has played many shows until major refinishing work was started. I hope to find 1 or 2 more used... as I'm afraid to be without it!
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The guitar's action was very nice right off the shelf, but I agree that some of the hardware was not top notch. (this was a budget guitar of course).
By far the best neck I have ever played on...the guild quality comes through in the neck and body construction.

Very durable. Mine was sadly cracked almost in half in '88. I shipped to Rhode Island for repair, and soon was as good as new.
the shape can be a problem as expected with the finish....sharp points and paint!! but aside from the usual nicks and scratches it has a very good finish job.
I have played many shows at times never picking up another guitar.

I dealt with Burnside several times in the late '80's. They were very knowledgeble and friendly. repair work was very reasonable (I think a complete refinish cost me about $250)I believe Burnside changed it's name in the early 90's. the later named guitars were not as nice, as a lived close to an exclusive dealer. It's a shame Burnside is no more.

If you see one of these used....buy it!!I own Ibanez, ESP, Gibson, Schecter,Fender and have owned or played countless others, nothing compares to my Burnside. I would certainly replace it...although it would be a lot of work to make a duplicate. I recommend changin the pickups and hardware. I was never a fan of trems...so I filled the body and gave it a string-through bridge, and some Seymour-Duncans and new wiring...The sound comes through even more now! It is stil a very reliable guitar with all factory parts.

Sound

mine is all original.it can do whatever you want.it's not noisy at all--rich full sound would be an understatement.i don't know what burnside did to make this guitar sound so good and play so easily--but they got it right.i can't think of a thing that i would change about this guitar...i always change the p/ups with any guitar i have ever owned--not his one.the p/ups scream.the guitar stays in tune when diving with the bar[you beat the hell out of it]stays in tune.

i bought it used[made in 1986 or 87].setup was great.this guitar has all the nicks and bangs that a pointed guitar would receive with normal playing.everything on this guitar was as it was supposed to be.every once in awhile you find a guitar that just fits right--plays great--sounds great.i bought this used off ebay,it just looked right.i had never heard of burnside..bought it anyway.what a deal i got.....................

Made in the 80's, Japanese. It has 2 double humbuckers. Set neck and fake floyd rose tremolo.
Sound
:

I like the chunkiness of the humbuckers. It works great for metal and punk, and I like the fullness of a clean sound great for jazz and blues too. Mine's rewired to a volume volume with a 3 way selector so i use it as a kill switch and do wierd stuff.

Once I adjusted it, it played like a dream. Pickups are a little weak. It has a half red half white horizontal paintjob with black hardware. It is chipped on both ends of the v and the tip of headstock.

Offset Flying V (Randy Rhoads style)... made in Japan. Don't know what year but it's 80s all the way. Thin, fast neck ideal for metal, punk and I suppose some of that nu-metal stufff. H/H setup. 3 way, volume and tone knobs. Floyd Rose copy tremolo. 22 frets with boomerang inlays. Pickups are alright but not the greatest. Other than that, it's all real good.
Sound
:

I play metal and play with an Ibanez and an ESP. Nothing touches my Ibanez but this sounds better than the ESP. Sound is thick (unlike most shredder guitars) and the sustain seems forever. Will probably replace the pickups when I feel ambitious. Damn pickups!

All guitars need to be set up. That said, after some adjusting, this guitar has a good feel. The guitar was used and with all flying V's, it's always going to be dinged on the ends. This guitar is probably 20 years old so what're you gonna do?

I bought this used so I wouldn't feel bad about scratching it up a bit when I play live. Once that first scratch is on, you can play with no worries. This guitar is by Guild so it's built to last. Dependable. The strap buttons are alright but I'm gonna replace those with Dimarzio clip-straps...

I've been playing for about 15 years and grew up playing bad metal. If this were stolen, I'd have to sit on my computer and buy it on eBay again cos these guitars are kind of hard-to-find. I wish the gig bag wasn't so g*y but other than that, it's all good.

I got the guitar as a graduation present and instantly fell in love with it. It has a neck thru body and a ebony fingerboard and a wacked out bridge (which is the only thing I don't like about it).
Sound
:
10
The sound is great. Has a great lead tone, put it on the Neck PU, roll back the tone and put it on the clean channel--it has an awesome clean sound.
Action, Fit, & Finish

The reason I gave it an 8 was when I got the guitar, I didn't know anything about the bridge, so I didn't know how to set the action right, with it being a floating tremelo. But, now I know how to work the bridge--it's great.

I threw it in a creek once, sprayed the knobs down with WD-40, and it sounded great. It stood up to the punishment. I jumped into a swimming pool once with it, and it cracked the paint on the neck, but not into the wood, sprayed it down again with WD-40, and it was ready to go...
