Early 70's, Made in Sweden. Wine color. Has 22 frets. 2 humbuckers each with a volume and tone control and a selector switch. There is also a cool on-off swith that I wish other guitar makers would use.
I only rated features an 8 because earlier Hag's have so many switches available and this is more traditional.

I have replaced the pick-ups and all the wiring, tuners, bridge and nut.

Sound : 10
The original pick-ups which sounded good were a bit microphonic and the pots were scratchy. I put in some EMG's and now it sounds like a dream and gets from the smoothest cleanest sound to a very heavy hard rockin sound. I play everything from jazz and blues to heavy metal on it. When I was gigging regularly with it I got a lot of very good comments on it, not on the guitar, but on the sound. It cuits through without over-powering.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Best action of all my guitars. Action is very low, neck is fast, and straight. Frets are thin. The finish is now beat-up with dings everywhere, but it still shines. I love the way this guitar fits me. I am a bit small and this fits my hands perfectly. Buy the way, this baby is very light.

Reliability/Durability : 5
I only rated this a 5 based on how it was originally set-up. The way I have it now, I would rate it a 7. The original tuners were just o.k., the whammy bar is good for your ending solo only. Use it once and you are out of tune. The original bridge does not have adjustments for intonation.

Even though I love this guitar, I have pretty much retired it. It's getting fragile and has developed cracks were the neck meets the body. This guitar has seen LOTS of action and was my main guitar for 15 years

I have retired this one, but am always looking for a deal on other Hag's. I can't help but to be hooked with them. I own a few other guitars suach as a PRS and a Strat (my main axe now), but still love this one above all the others.

Ca 1971, wine red transparent, mahogany neck & body, with Tremar vibrato tailpiece.

Sound : 2
Very muddy, no highs, no lows, hardly any mids either - and there was nothing wrong with the pickups. Absolutely no sustain whatsoever, thankt to the idiotic Tremar tailpiece. Worst I ever had!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 3
The neck is VERY soft, just look at it and it will bend out of tune! The first time you use the vibrato bar, you will break string windings or go way out of tune - the bridge does not work with a vibrato, but they obviously didn't care. OK paint, not pretty but nicely applied. The tuners are no better than friction pegs, plenty of backlash and no precision.

Reliability/Durability : 3
It will not stay in tune for ten seconds, no matter what. And if it did, you wouldn't want to hear it.

Played since 1972, have owned 4 Telecasters, 1 Strat, 1 Stratclone, 2 Les Paul clones, and numerous other guitars. All of them sooo much better than that HIIN. This was my first electric, and I could not believe the difference when I traded up for a new Telecaster four years later (a Telecaster from the darkest days of sloppy Fender quality, mind you!).

My HIIN is a sunburst model from the early 70's. The features are as follows:

Maple Neck (relativly thin), Rosewood Fretboard with small frets, dual humbuckers, adjustable bridge w/ tremolo unit, 2-tone knobs, 2-volume knobs, 1-kill switch, 3-way pick-up selector switch.
The features themselves seem to be of a greater number than what a Gibson SG, clearly the target of the designers of this guitat, offers while being no more obtrusive, so I'll rate them a 9.

Sound : 7
Since buying the HIIN, I've used it with various effects and amps. The amps were a 1990 Fender Dual Showman SR (last year for the "red-knob" version), a small solid-state Peavey 158 Blazer combo(I know, I know; but there are plenty of crappier starter amps), a Reverend Hellhound (now discontinued, but really a nice little tube combo), and a 1960's Ampeg Reverberocket II (an amp I adore). As far as peadls, I've used a Line 6 Delay, a Danelectro DanEcho, Danelectro Cool Cat, 2 Big Muffs (russian and USA), Reverend Drivetrain II, a Small Stone Phaser, Fulltone Ultimate Octave, and various Dunlop Wahs (all of which have broken--buyer beware!)
The sound of this guitar, at least mine anyway, can be summed-up in one phrase, "Low-fi". Everything about this guitar screams garage-rock. The other reviews of it that I've read describe it as beatiful, but my perception of it has always been that the sound is sort of raw and bright, especially compared to other similar dual-humbucker equipped guitars I've played. Through all of my amps, the guitar seems to have a bit less complexity and shimmer than my other guitars (a Gulid BluesBird and an American Strat). However, it does have it's own uniquly gruff voice, which sound particularly good for old-school rock chording. I've found it sounds partiularly cool on the front pick-up, which with some distortion or a good fuzz and yeilds perfect, furry stoner-rock tones. I've been able to get some pretty nice, round sounds from the neck pick-up with cleaner settings. As for its other sonic attributes, it offers suprisingly good sustain and very well-voiced tone controls that never seems to get muddy. In fact, this could be the only guitar with tone controls that I don't simply leave cranked.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
When I first got this guitar, it was in disrepair. I have since had it rewired to original specifications.
While I can speak of the condition of the guitar from the factory, I can say that the materials and workmanship evident from the unchanged parts of the guitar seem top-notch. The woods, the finish, the neck and frets, the hardware, etc., all seem to be very tightly seat and well finished.
If I have any complaints about the guitar, they are design complaints only. The scale is about 24 inches, like a Fender Jaguar, which means that the frets higher-up on the neck get a little close-together even for me, and I don't exactly have enormous hands.
The second thing is the vibrato tail peice. It has it good points; it looks really cool, it doesn't get in the way, and it sits far enough back on the guitar that you can pluck all kinds of weird, harp-like noises from the part of the strings streched between the bridge and the tail-peice. However, if you want the guitar to stay in tune for more than one or two light uses, forget it. The only thing you can't use the vibrato for is, well, vibrato. Thankfully, I have little use for a Vibrato bar.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This thing, while light and, in the case of mine, very old, seems more than tough enough to play-out live. It's was very well built. Also, it seems fairly easy to fix if anything did go wrong.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Hagstom has long been defunct, so I imagine that there simply isn't any support from the manufacturer.

Overall Rating : 8
There are numerous ways to rate a guitar. One might be to determine its value in light of one's one needs and desires, while another might be to rate it against a set of more objective criteria.
In light of the first method, I have to say that this guitar just didn't fit me the way I hoped it would. While it is about the coolest looking guitar around, and it does have unique features and sounds, it just lacked the things that I really want in a guitar. I like very clear, detailed tones and a design that fits comfortably with my body and playing. Unfortunatly, this guitar just couldn't offer those for me. I've been playing for about six years now, and my tastes have a couple of times, from jazzy-funk to classical to punk to indie-rock. Who Knows? Maybe it one of these days I'll change again, this time in favor of the Hagstrom.
In light of the second method, however, this guitar is a winner. It is rock-soild, dirt-cheap, offers plenty of features, and, above all, has a uniqueness in both sound and style that few other electrics of this type, particularly new ones, can match. For those who are comfortable with a light-weight, smaller scale electric guitar, this guitar might just do the trick.

This model according to the Hagstrom gallery website at www.albinhagstrom.com is a 1971 Wine red H2N model. It is made in Sweden. 21 frets, solid top, a 3-way selector, with an on/off switch. Dual humbuckers, passive electronics, Rosewood fingerboard. Its body style is a mixture of an SG and a strat. Tune-0-matic bridge, tremolo. Neck is slightly thinner compared to PRS or Fender. Bolt-on neck.

Sound : 10
This guitar is the best sounding electric guitar i've played. I own a 70's Fender Strat, a 70's Gibson Les Paul Custom, and a 90's PRS Custom. This baby can actually sing, twang, and growl! You can even get it to sound like a strat or Les Paul. With a Boss Turbo Overdrive and a Fender Twin, you can get a rich/full overdriven sound ala Whitesnake's "Still of the Night". It's also got twang for that Ventures sound and mid for a thick bright Chet Atkins sound. No noise!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This guitar was built with love! The action is great! You can play fast with the smooth frets. The pickups are well adjusted and the intonation is perfect. I also love the wine red finish! A work of art!

Reliability/Durability : 9
The hardware looks tough. It hasn't rusted or anything. The machine heads are still tight. This is a guitar for gigging!

Customer Support : 2
No more support for this guitar i believe... Maybe through the www.albinhagstrom.com site for the specs and dating..

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing guitar for 12 years now. I just got this Hagstrom a couple of days ago and am fascinated with it! I own a Fender strat, Gibson Les Paul Custom, PRS Custom 22, a '39 Gibson Super 400. If it were stolen or lost, I would surely miss it and maybe get another one. For me the greatest asset of this guitar is its sound. I can't find another guitar with this kind of sound. Imagine, you can get it to sound like a strat of les paul!
