It's a set neck guitar. Ebony fingerboard. Mahogany body and neck. Features a Tremar and King's Neck. Thin frets, thin neck (plays like butter). Non locking Van Ghent tuners. The body style is kind of Strat-ish with shades of Gretsch Corvette. It's got two single coils (neck and bridge), three pick up selector switches (including off), two volume controls, and a bunch of tone controls.

This is by far one of the best sounding guitars I've owned. I like that old vinto single coil sort of shimmer/twang and my '68 Impala delivers. I play everything from country to epic universe swallowing sub-sonic dirges with it. Hagstrom single coils have THEE TONE. That combined with the pushbutton tone controls gives you a wide variety of sounds.
I play it through my 1962 Hagstrom 39 tube amp using a Big Muff and at times, an Electro Harmonix Octivider. With just the Big Muff you get that glorious AC/DC tear circa "Powerage" or "Highway to Hell."
The Impala is remarkably quiet considering it's age. Overdriven it gets noisey but that's to be expected.

The fit and finish on the Impala is amazing. The neck is thin (like a jazz guitar) and plays like butter. The joint at the set neck is barely noticeable. Mine is a later model with the neck binding and a gorgeous trans cherry wine finish (not burst).
The pushbutton controls all work and are not scratchy. The hardware is, as with most Hagstroms, nickel plated brass (I believe).
These are quality guitars as fine as any Gibson/Guild/Gretsch/Fender. The workmanship on them is incredible.

What can I say, this thing is from 1968 and plays like new.

I've been playing Hagstroms since 1987. I've also owned Guilds, Gretsch and some other crud. I currently own my '67 HIII, my '68 Impala and a '04 F200 reissue. Add to that my '62 Hagstrom 39 amp. In the past I have owned a '72 HIIN, '64 HIII Futurama and an H12 electric.
If my Impala was stolen I would hunt down the jerk and gut 'em like a pig. I have loved all my Hags but the Impala is at the top of the heap for sound, fit and finish and styling.

Action is fastest I've ever found. No rattles either even after 35+ years. Had to fine tune the pickups when I bought it, but the overall setup by the factory and the fine tuning by the dealer were excellent.

It is still going after 35+ years of use. The finish has stood up and it has taken a beating over the years. Tuning pegs are starting to slip.

Looking for Karl Hagstrom's e-mail or address. Cira 66-67 Impala, Serial 664397, would like to locate tuning pegs, electronics...after 35 years of use somethings just wear.

Been playing 35+ years. Since they are no longer manufactured I would be at a loss if this axe was lost. Even after 35 years the neck is straight and the action is fantastic.

Ive been playing since the 60's and own lots of gear. Fender gibson martin takamine favilla digitech yamaha etc. But mostly I love Hagstroms and have started to collect, modify and restore them. there is no better basic guitar value out there than an old hagstroms. Replace the 60's pickups and electronics and you have a modern guitar as good... no better... than any production model out there. Oh save the old parts because they are valuable!!!
