This is most likely from the mid 1970's and is the acoustic/electric version of the H162. It has a dreadnought body style and looks as though it is made from mahoghany wood, including the solid top. Like an Ovation acoustic/electric I had from this period, it only has volume and tone knobs. Surprisingly, they seem to give a good range of adjustment for the amplified sound. No 9V battery in this model.

Sound : 8
Used mostly for folk music and oldies. It has a full, bright sound. Definitely better than the inexpensive new guitars with the laminated tops. This guitar has a lot of character.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I bought this used, and the action is low and easy to play. The action is lower than most acoustics I have seen. The finish is very decent, still shiny and not cracking after all these years. The frets are even and don't have rough edges. The body has full binding around the front and back. The fretboard is apparently made of something other than rosewood or ebony, as there is lighter wood grain under the dark stain. This is not a $1200 guitar, but for what it cost, I have to give it a high rating here.

Reliability/Durability : 9
It stays in tune well, but if this were my main guitar, I would be tempted to update the tuners to a different ratio. As I mentioned earlier, the finish still looks like new. The cord jack is in the end strap button, and it seems high quality. I think if this instrument were to have a problem, it would've happened by now.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Too late for any warranty as this was made so long ago. I've owned a few older Harmony products over the years and haven't had any problems. Apparently, they did their homework up front so the products would last.

Overall Rating : 8
Also own a Dean acoustic/electric, G&L asat and a Les Paul. This guitar was originally bought for my son and he has since purchased a more expensive acoustic and a Gibson SG. This is a good basic guitar, and with the great action, it is much better than any inexpensive guitar I've seen in the stores. I don't think you can buy any better guitar for the price.

This is a pretty good guitar for the price. I only paid $150 so I can't complain too much. I have never tried this guitar with an amp so I'm not sure if the pickup even works.

The Mahogany finish looks really good, even after 15 years of hard playing (sometimes outdoors). The action of the neck is pretty good on mine with a good height between the neck and strings.

Sound : 9
I like the sound of this guitar. It has a slight tinny sound to it, but definately better than you would expect with a $150 guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The action is very good, compared to other reviews I have read here. I did not notice any flaws on mine.

Reliability/Durability : 8
After 15 years there are a few scratches and dings, buit the finish has held up VERY well. The strap buttons are fine. I'm not sure about the pickup since I've never used it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have never tried contacting them, so I don't know.

Overall Rating : 8
I have been very happy with this guitar. It looks nice and plays nice so I can't complain. IN fact, I have absolutely no complaints at all about it. It has been a good guitar.

My H162E is a Korean built model purchaced new in 1990. It's a full size dreadnaught with pickup built into the last fret of the neck. I believe this is supposed to be a solid mahogany guitar .... I know it's sure pretty !!! The features have been fairly well described in earlier posts.

Sound : 9
I think my cheap old Harmony sounds great !!! Perfect for 'round the campfire' stuff. It sounds warm and full ... I like to play a little blues and I can even get the chomp sound I like. For my needs (country, blues and folk)this guitar is a 10 in my book.

I rarely use it through an amp. The few times I have it sounded pretty good but really not too much experience with this one. It is my acoustic guitar and that's what I use it for.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The guitar out of the box was just beautifull. The monotone mahogany finish appeals to me more than the light top darks sides and back look. The finish is smooth and even and glossy to this day. And even after 15 years it still looks great. Only two little dinks and some scratching from picks on the front. I've taken care of it.

Only real flaw is ... the action was a little high when bought. It's starting to get too high. Will have to take it for repairs soon. The neck is starting to bend. For this I'm gonna score the guitar a little lower but geez .... a $100 guitar after 15 years should be junk ... mine's not !

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar is a real workhorse. I've played her a lot over the years and am only now thinking about a trip to the luthier for some neck adjustment and maybe a new nut.

This is my backyard and camping guitar ... after all it's been through it should be junk ... it's in great shape !!!!!!!!

The finish is outstanding. Almost as good after 15 years as it was when new.

Electrics still function "as new".

I've taught my kids with this guitar, it's spent many a night in it's chipboard case in a tent or a cabin or camper. It has never let me down.

Customer Support : No Opinion
??????????? I don't even really know which one of the ten thousand oriental guitar makers even made this one. I don't have the paper work anymore.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing since 1967.

I don't own anything expensive at the moment ... just this Harmony, a Oscar Schmidt OE30, Silvertone Rockit, Fender Squire Strat, 1968 Harmony "Stella" electric, Harmony Strat copy.

If it where stolen or lost I would prorably replace with a Epiphone or Washburn cheapy. But I'd be crushed.

This guitar was a birthday gift from my wife. It's special to me. My family has had some good times around it. I love it. Nothing to "hate" about it. I really like the all mahogany finish, the overall sound quality and it's durability. I'll never get rid of it. If it becomes unplayable in the future it will become a cherished decoration on my office wall.

Paid $165 in 1995, Beautiful red mahogany finish, built in pickup, bridge is plastic and has worn down slightly. I would agree that the strings could be a little closer to the neck, if you want to play some lead part, but it is easy with chords. If I can learn to play on this guitar well, I can play anything because my finger and chord changes will have good exercise. Sounds great for the price.

Sound : 9
Great harmonic rich/full sound for only $165. I recently went to Mars music store to try every acoustic guitar to see if I wanted to upgrade and I came home happy that I have this Harmony H162E. To find another guitar that sounds full body and not tinny, I would have to buy an $800 Martin or $800 Yamaha.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
good quality, nothing unusual except a little wear on plastic bridge

Reliability/Durability : 8
I have been rough with guitar because of the price, so it has held up well.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing 5 years, and it is my only guitar, I would buy another one.

this is an add on to my existing review. We grow hopefully that is and we change. Since buying the Harmony I have had the opportunity to play and own much better guitars so I am re-reviewing the guitar.

Sound : 5
The guitar sounds stuffed up. The sound is sorta muted not open as other guitars.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
The action was high so I sanded down the saddle and that seemed to help but then I noticed that the bridge is wanting to pull away from the guitar. The back was seperating from the sides so I glued it. binding is cheap electronics are pretty good. This is probably a 100 dollar guitar max.

Reliability/Durability : 4
The guitar is starting to exhibit problems so it either was stored poorly and or it is just not a well made guitar. I suspect both. This is an inexpensive beginner guitar.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 4
I'm selling the guitar since I have outgrown it and I really only played it a short time. It is a better guitar than the all mahogony washburn I had but it isn't of the quality I need now.

Harmony H162E manufactured 1970's. It is a all mahagony guitar made in Korea. I do not know if the top is solid or laminate since it has this strange wood grain pattern that I have never seen in any other mahagony top guitar. It is a rather beautiful top with patterns in the wood as opposed to stripes. It has one volume and one tone control. These are mounted close to the neck and are like dials instead of sliders. The pickup is located under the neck. It is a dreadnought.

Sound : 10
I was looking for a warm sounding acoustic. I had heard a Martin mahagony guitar and wanted that sound but not the price. I bought a washburn all mahagony guitar but it sounded tinny. The harmony sounds warm like the Martin.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The guitar is old close to 30 years old so the wood has aged. The acoustic sound is very good. Plugged in the guitar is fantastic. The action is higher than I'd like even after sanding the saddle down. I will probably take it in and have a tech lower the action. There is a seperation occuring in the back of the guitar near the strap button which is also the plug in. The seperation is mimimal.

Reliability/Durability : 9
The guitar is already 30 years old. It is still alive though I had to scrub off the nicotine stains, finger grease and years of dirt caked on the fretboard. There are no scratches in the finish. It was rarely played and must have sat in a heavy smokers house.

Customer Support : No Opinion
There is a resurgence of this company but who ever made the guitar does not exist.

Overall Rating : 10
I wanted a warm sounding acoustic guitar. With lower action this will be a gem. I played alot when I was in high school quit and now later in life have started back up again. I have a yamaha AES1500, CN-525E, Samick HJ650, Takamine EF381C, Hamer stellar 1, 1985 Ibanez roadstar, Fernandez strat(japan), Fender Tele thinline pro tone and a Yamato acoustic. I use a Yamaha TC100 tube amp. I also have a Peavey classic 50 4x10.
