Hofner 4579

Mine has got a vibrato tailpiece. This is an option for this guitar but quite unusual but well built.

It's really a sweet sound you get with those pickups

For a guitar from 1971 it's amazing to notice that the potentiometers are still working very fine! In comparison to my Cort MGM that is only about 4 years old...

I did chache the screws because of the rust and had to replace the old strings but otherwise still in a fabulous condition

I call this guitar a war horse because its heavy and very well built.
It just doesn't wear off - there's nothing more to say here

I think that I'm gonna use this guitar forever! I use it with a VOX AC30 and a Ibanez TS9 and it just sounds grrrreat!

It is a 4579 Hi Fi, Set neck, fully binded Les Paul style semi-hollow body, beautiful light flame top of 3 tone burst, 2 wooden Hofner Hi-Fi pickups, a zero fret and a roller bridge with adjustable strings width mechanism, 2 volume and 2 tone controls, the 3 way switch is in the same area of the controls. A piece of ugly 2 ply pickup rings and pick guard all-in-one black plastic covered almost 1/3 of the beautiful wood top. It was very old already when I bought it in 1982, the laquer finish has developed lots of cracks. And because of the last owner's abuse, it came with a bad crack on the lower bout of the back. The original pickups sound weak and low in volume so I put a Bill Lawrence L500 to the bridge and a Fender single coil to the neck. I did not fix the crack properly because I had to gig with it as a back up to my Tokai Love Rock right away.

The sound is bright and full with the Lawrence L500. It sustains endlessly with big fat rock distortions. The single coil pickup
produces sweet jazz tones of a semi-hallow body. Blending the 2 it sounds like a nice solid body. It is a lighter guitar giving good
sounds from both worlds. Recently, I've installed a pair of Ibanez 70s humbuckers(Les Paul copy)to it. In order to get the most out
of the tones, I replaced all the electronics and 4 x one meg pots. with 2x 0.047 cap. Now it can scream like a high power rock guitar
and sings like a sweet Jazz Gibson when I turn it down to a mellow level. It does not sound exactly like a Les Paul. To my opion, it is
more versitile than a Les Paul with wider tonal range.

The neck is thin and wide. Action is low and fast with a very straight dark rose wood fret board. After so many years of playing it needs to be refreted and proper repair of the crack though it does not affect a bit of the sound. The finish still looks good with the checks to enhance the look of a vintage work horse. I don't know what kind of wood it is but the light flame top looks really as good
as those vintage Les Pauls plus it has a light weight body almost 2/3 of a les Paul.
The original holes for the Hi Fi pickups are too big for the replacement pickups. I have to fix the gaps exposed to keep the mounting rings in place. The old 2 in one pick guard is useless and the thing looks 100% better without it while showing off the complete face of the beautiful flame top.

I've been using it for 20+ years. Since I did all the set ups and repairs of my gears, this Hofner plays well and stays in tune with the not so good looking tuning keys. It's reliable and I think I can pass it on to my sons in the future for a lot more years of fun.

The 4579 is the best design ever of the LP style guitars. I do not agree that it is a copy of the LP because the Gibson company only
have their acoustic LP made in the late 90s.It's like a Rolls to me.

I got this guitar with 2 emg replacement humbuckers.

The sound is really fat. sustain without ending, a real good sound equal if you play dirty rock or blues.
seems to me better than an original les paul from gibson

it's not so heavy and the space between the fretboard and the strings is set to minimal which allows really fast playing without snaring.
the fretboard is slightly bent which is really comfortable. color and binding are still ok. the inlays at the headstock are brilliant. much more beautiful than a gibson.

you can't kill this guitar and you won't do. it's a beauty and a working horse in one. with the original tuners ( I don't know who manufactured them)you don't have problems with getting out of tune.
you wouldn't get tired of wearing it and it really makes fun to play it.
the only minus is when you wear the guitar really low and hold the scale high it could be that you switch the toogle. but that also happened with the original les paul.

there aren't any original parts to get but otherwise the service is friendly and patiently

if you see the age (1971) and in my case the perfect condition you'll never be so dumb and buy an original les paul custom. firstly u save money, secondly it's more than rare and thirdly you'll never get the idea to play another guitar in fact it fits like a tailor-made suit.
If you've got the possibility to get one, buy it. it's really worth.
