The Reference Classic S is basically a strat-style guitar made in Germany. The body-wood is polar, 22 frets, 1-piece maple neck with thick rosewood fingerboard, locking Schaller Tuners, roller nut, Schaller 2000 Tremolo, 2 single coils (neck, middle) 1 humbucker with split mode in bridge position.
the humbucker is in single coil mode when the tone-pot is open, turning it downs connects the humbucker in humbucking mode.

The guitar plays extremely good. The neck has a asymetrical shape that makes it very comfortable. Because of the locking tuners and roller nut it stays in tune quite good. The instrument is light.
The sound is vintage style with good sustain and very resonant.
The humbucker is not too powerful and sounds very good in single-coil mode and also in humbucker mode.

I called Hofner several times because I wanted to get some technical information. They were extremely nice and helpful.

I am playing for about 20 years. I have (too) many guitars (Fender Strat and Tele, Gibson Les Pauls, ES-335, ES-135, PRS CE Maple Top, Gordon Smith GS II). I play the guitars through a Fender Concert II Amp and a Mesa Boogie Studio 22.EQ.
The Hoefner was the newest addition and i really love it. I hardly use any other guitar since I got it.
If it were stolen I'ld try to find another one or order a new one from Hoefner. The Refernce models aren't made anymore.
