I bought this second hand (>15 years ago) and the original owner had fitted Seymour Duncan PAF's so I can't comment on the orginal Hondo pickups. The Seymour Duncan PAF's sound great and really suit the guitar. Excellent for Blues, Very good for Rock but not really a Metal guitar.
Although it has never been my number 1 guitar...I've still kept it after 15 years as I just couldn't bear to part with it.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
It has a glued-in neck and set up and quality of workmanship has been astounding. I've had it for more than 15 years and despite some rough treatment it has lasted extremely well. The action is fantastic, the neck has never gone out of true and the tuning is very stable.
As mentioned before - The previous owner had swapped the original pickups for Seymour Duncan PAFs and these work well in this guitar.

Reliability/Durability : 10
The gold plated hardware looks a bit dull after (at least) my 15 years of ownership. There is some visual wear but the tuners and saddles are still 100% serviceable and this guitar holds its tuning very well.
However the body finish (2 tone varnish, not laquer) has not lasted so well and has scraped off in several places..The finish on the body of this guitar gets that worn look much quicker than most (possibly all) others that I have owned. Despite that I have to give it full marks as it's been amazing over a very hard life. The strap buttons are good - the hardware has lasted 15 years and still works extremely well and it's a bloody reliable guitar, and it was damn cheap as well.
By comparison - I have a Ibanez S2170FW (top of the range Ibanez) and the hardware on that has tarnished much quicker than this Hondo.

Customer Support : No Opinion
No idea - I had no reason to contact them.

Overall Rating : 10
It has never been my favourite guitar but it's has always been a close second. I'd be gutted to lose it. I have definitely been happy with this purchase and it has been rock solid from day 1.
For the price it was incredible and still sounds hot today.

I bought this guitar from a friend back in 1982. Paid $150 for it. He'd never played it. Said he paid $350 for it with the case. I wouldn't say it's loaded with tons of features. But I gave it a ten because what it has still works. It's now 2006 and I'm recording with it. It's clean and powerful.

I've got a 1961 Gibson SG-1. I'd put the Hondo up against it any day of the week. Only thing is it could really use a good tune up. (New strings, neck adjustment, etc.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Everything seems to be about as good as it gets with this rig. Maybe the guy I bought it from had it super tuned before he took delivery. The action is super good and everything is aligned just like it was the day I bought it.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've played guitar since 1959. I bought this guitar in 1982. It still looks as good and plays as good as the day I bought it. What can I say?

Customer Support : No Opinion
Has never needed repair from day one. Still looks and plays as good as the day I bought it.

Overall Rating : 10
Like I said earlier. I'd put this little axe up against my SG-1 any day of the week. It totally cooks whenever I play it. What more could a guy ask for.

BTW It can really feed back like crazy. Must be due to that thick, heavy wood they used.

I bought it at 99dollarguitars.com. I bought this guitar in white I have played guitar for over 15 years and I had a friend when I was growing up that had a guitar like this. In the 1980's we use to buy these cheap guitars and spend the extra money to change the hardware and pickups to make these desent playing guitars.

Sound : 10
The sound is excellent I replaced the existing pickups with Seymore Duncan vintage staggered pickups. As for amps I am using a Fender princeton. It goes from a clean bell like tone to full blown distortion.

It is great growing up in the 1980's and Idolizing Eddie Van Hallen I pulled his stunt constantly. Eddie did not get a contract from Kramer for playing a Kramer guitar. The neck was Kramer but the body was not. Eddie went on record saying that he bought the neck and the body seperate. Go to the local pawnshop and find a real crappy guitar with a name brand neck. Put the neck on your cheap guitar. With this and changing pickups you should have a great guitar.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Yes I do not gig anymore but I when I use to the other guitarist in our band done this to a hondo. He giged with it for eight years with a Peavey neck on it. He used Dimarzio pickups. My self I giged with a harmony I used a B.C.Rich neck because at that time B.C.Rich actually made a few strats. We would buy these cheap guitars in white and put all black hardware on them even changeing the strap jacks.

This company is extremly helpful when I first started playing music I along with other guitarist were ashamed of the names of our guitars. By useing a better neck and pickups these changes your sound dramically.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for over 15 years. I own this guitar, a B.C. strat, Alverez acoustic,Washburn acoustic, and Oscar Schmidt banjo.A fender princeton, and a crate Mx65,and several dod pedals. I like equipement that reminds me of when I was younger and the glory days.I wish it had something I have not seen in years a coil tap.
