Laminated pine (I think). One volume, one tone knob.

Okay, this isn't an Explorer or a Jazz. I have a crappy little practice amp, so I can't seriously fault the sound response. Plus, I don't have enough experience with basses to pass judgement on this.

A few chips in the laminate.
I also had the same experience in that the 1/4 inch jack plug was loose and I had to re-solder the wires to the plug.
For such an old, beat up guitar, it came out of the resale shop with a straight neck and good fretwires.
I did test drive a lot of basses before I picked this one, and there was no fret rattle, and great action. Just the right tension on the strings. Not too jello-ish, not too stiff. This played better than any of the $200 Ibanez's that I played.

This bass had lived a long and full life before I picked it up (for next to nothing). I don't know this for a fact, but from the laminate chips it looks like soft pine constructions. But the hell with that, the neck is still straight as an arrow.

it has atiquately withstood playing, the hardware will last, after 2 years now the open E string rattles, i can depend on it, i would use it in a gig without a backup.
