1979 DMZ 2000.

Natural maple body, solid chunk of pure maple, clear coat finish. Aluminum "tuning fork" neck, ebanol fretboard, dot inlays, matching maple inlays on back of aluminum to keep warm feel. Leo Quan Badass bridge/tailpiece, adjustable for intonation. Two original DiMarzio Super Distortion Humbuckers. Les Paul style volume/tone controls, with two coil taps. Schaller tuning heads.

Sound : 10
This guitar sounds amazing. I was worried it wouldn't hold tune, but it really holds tune well. I have changed its environment drastically, maybe if I played under hot lights or outdoors there might be tuning problems. But in my house, studio, etc., it holds tune really well.

Most importantly, this guitar is so articulate in its attack, it just sounds tremendous. Goes from ass kicking distortion to bell-like clarity. You can dial up an AC/DC crunch attack, or a chicken picken twang. It sounds so good, I'm thinking its my new favorite -- and I've got two Les Pauls, a G&L, and a Fender Robert Cray strat.

It sounds surprisingly good on finger-style acoustic types of open chords. And the wider fretboard makes those things easier to play.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Built by hand in a small shop in the 70's by craftsman who wanted to build a better guitar than Gibson or Fender. Plain and simple. A truly boutique guitar.

It is also amazingly strong -- truly you can't hurt this puppy.

Reliability/Durability : 10
It's a tank.

I love this axe. I'm shocked more people don't value them as highly as the Travis Beans of the same era.

aluminum pitchfork neck, wood body, solidly built, takes on any abuse you can give it and keeps on working like a charm...nice thick neck, took me a couple days to adjust to a wider neck...seperate tone and volume controls for the two dimarzio humbuckers, and two mini-pickup selectors...beautiful thick, natural finish that makes the guitar look brand new off the factory line...i was definitely impressed taking it out of the generic guitar case the seller sent me the guitar in...i couldn't believe it was 25 years old...tuning is a problem though, being that the neck is metal, it has a lot of trouble changing enviroments...as long as you keep it at a steady constant temperature it should be fine...do not play with a fan overhead, i learned this the hard way at a college gig, it definitely did not like the fan blowing on it because it was determined to fall completely out of tune in the middle of every song i used it on...but i learned my lesson

Sound : 10
the dimarzio pickups sound great, and the metal neck gives a wonderful bite to the tone...really packs a wallop...very punchy when clean, it's best to find a distortion that doesn't kill the guitar's natural sound, otherwise your basic budget distortion kind of dulls the impact of the aluminum neck sound a bit...perfect for a PiL, big black sort of aggressive dissonance type sound, but suits other styles just as well

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
action seems to be a little sketch, from what i hear it's a common problem...me, i'm not too picky about action, but some might find that to be a turn-off when considering getting a kramer aluminum neck...thick finish on it, no blemishes or scratches (after 25 years!)...people complain about the weight, but it doesn't bother me that much, just gets to be a little painful on your shoulder, but a well-padded strap would soften the burden on your shoulder, but again some might find it to be too heavy for them...before i got a padded strap, i had a constant red stripe down my shoulder, but now it's much more comfortable with some padding underneath it's weight...some mayb also dislike that it tends to dip down a bit because of the weight of the neck, but considering it's an aluminum neck, the weight is pretty evenly distributed between the neck and body (so the body is also quite heavy)...

Reliability/Durability : 9
this thing is solid...got it used about 2 years ago, has not one single paint chip or blemish on it...it's been going strong for 25 years, i am the third owner (based on the info the seller from ebay gave me)...it's definitely built like a tank...i wouldn't worry about using it as a stand alone, but we use a whole rack of guitars in different tunings so i've never had it as a sole stand alone...the tuning problem can be a pain though, so you should probably spring for a trustworthy tuner and have it available at all times

this is a great guitar for assimilating that mid-eighties post-punk sound, like PiL, Gang of Four, that sort of thing...with the right distortion and amp this guitar is an unstoppable battering ram that just echoes through your chest cavity and shakes your bowels clear...you'll definitely stand out with such an odd looking neck and a very distinctive tone and sound...i'll take this over some boring 1500 gibson any day
