My Maton M225 was built in May 2007. 'A' Grade Spruce top, Queensland Maple back and sides, Rosewood fingerboard and bridge - natural finish. While this is the bottom of the Maton line, it is still an outstanding guitar. Fabulous Maton quality and unbeatable sound!

Sound : 10
Brilliant sound. I've played for 30 years with many guitars - this tops them all! Harmonics are great and overall sound is full and clear.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
As other reviewers have noted - the guitar plays perfectly right out of the box. Excellent build quality, easy low action and great neck.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
I will be keeping this guitar in a hard case when not in use. Very lightweight.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Part of the reason I chose Maton was after hearing reports about great customer service from other players. As an Aussie I know Maton has always had a strong reputation for quality and commitment to musicians.

Overall Rating : 10
Fantastic guitar. Best I have played since a mid-80's Ibanez Artwood Series solid top. This guitar is brighter with excellent tonal quality. I was considering a Yamaha 750S, but for a little more cash the Maton is really worth every cent!

Natural finish,Australian made,no pickup or cutaway,spruce top,very well made.

Sound : No Opinion
The sound is brilliant,I have played it with a flatpick, fingerstyle and pick and fingers and this guitar sounds great,a very good balance of treble and bass when strumming or picking.

Action, Fit, & Finish : No Opinion
I cannot fault this guitar, the build quality is excellent,it played well straight from the box with no adjustments needed, absolutely flawless.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
In my opinion, even though this instrument is very light in weight, maton has been proven at tour level. The finish may wear after a while, but that never worries me,look at the hiding Tommy Emanuel dishes out to his.Im keeping this for the long haul and suspect the tone will only improve with age.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with them but cant see any problems as Maton acoustics are used by so many aussie top line acts.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I have played since I was 15 and Im now 46,struth 31 years go by quickly!.I own a old strat, gretsch,a beat up telly,66 bassman, vox and some pedals like most players, this is the only acoustic I need and play.I love the percussive sound and great tone I get from this instrument, all class. If it was stolen Id track down the theif.

Features : 9
Finish: Thin satin. So thin that after 4 months playing it's wearing away in a beautiful manner.
Bridge/nut: Ebony. wow. lush!
Date of manufacture: 08/06
Woods. Sitka spruce top, back and sides. not sure about neck. some australian timber.

Sound : 10
Sometimes when I'm sat playing this guitar I stop and let one chord or note ring out just to hear the harmonics and the lush overtones. This guitar sings. When I went guitar shopping I only tried one guitar. Didn't seem to be any point playing another.

What incredible sustain! Not long after purchase I was jamming with my friend who has a PRS. We did a side by side comparison with his amp turned down to match the acoustic volume. 12th fret harmonic on the A-string. The Maton sustained about twice as long. yum.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Action and intonation were setup perfectly. The bridge is carved to correct the length of the B string. The bookmatching is also flawless. The back of my guitar has a knot in the wood which makes it look like it has nipples.

Reliability/Durability : 7
The only fault I could pick with this guitar is it's APPARENT fragility.. it is very lightweight.. almost half the weight of normal. I worry about leaving it in a room with other people when I'm not there in case someone knocks it over. Also the finish is very thin as noted above. It has a few dings from contact that would not have left a mark on a guitar with a thicker finish. But i kind of like that about it.

Overall Rating : 10
This is my only guitar but I am hoping to buy a Maton electric in the near future. Playing it is a joy. If it was stolen I would hunt down the thief and slowly remove his fingernails with a pair of pliers.

I love the sound. I hate the nerves I get when other people play it. Unless they are really good players when I just sit in front of them and listen to that tone.

I have owned numerous guitars but this is the first one I bought new. If anybody is looking for a decently priced acoustic with a tone far superior to similarly priced guitars then I'd reccomend maton in a second. They range from the 800 to about 6000 NZ$.

- Satin finish
- Solid spruce top
- Queensland Maple back, sides, neck, headstock
- Rosewood fingerboard
- Chrome machine heads.

For the money a great guitar.

Sound : 10
I play a lot of fingerstyle guitar and the sound of this guitar is perfect. I bought it in 2005 from a dealer in the UK and tried several other more expensive guitars including Martin, Taylor, Seagull, Simon & Patrick. None of them came near to the sound of this guitar. I couldn't put it down once I had played a few notes on it. The sound is full and even, and the sustain on the notes is truly inspiring. I have a few mates who have other guitars, but they always ask to play my Maton over their guitars.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The set up on this guitar was just perfect. I have had to adjust the truss rod once, but that is understandable as woods move and change, especially when travelling. I have to say that these guitars really do feel amazing, you can't put them down. The woods look fantastic on it, and you can tell from the inside and outside that these guitars are carefully made. There was no problem at all with the finish.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've played with this guitar all over the UK and it is still in great shape. I was a bit dubious at first of the satin finish and whether it would withstand knocks, but it remains almost perfect after many knocks. The whole guitar feels solid and I don't think there'll ever be a problem with it at all.

Customer Support : 10
Maton are an extremely helpful company and will reply with any enquiries you have. I emailled them several times to ask about customising it and they were very helpful. The shop where I bought it (Broadway Music) are also very helpful and were able to help me adjust the truss rod when needed.

Overall Rating : 10
Over the year this guitar has improved vastly, which is surprising when I think how good it was to start with.

Australian made Maton M225 acoustic, 21 frets, solid Spruce top, Queensland Maple back, sides and neck. Satin finish, dreadnought style body (no cutaway). The neck is the perfect size, very easy to play. Very smooth tuners, perfect. Not many features, but who cares, its a Maton!

Sound : 10
Beautiful sound. Suits my styles just fine, I mostly play classic rock, blues, as well as some new stuff like Ben Harper, Michael Franti, etc, miscellaneous other stuff.
Great tone, awesome guitar for fingerpicking styles. Due to the Spruce top, it sounds pretty damn bright, but that doesn't seem to be a bad thing. If you're looking for a warmer sound, go for the Cedar top M225. Overall an awesome sound, best tone for the money, in my experience.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Straight from the box, the setup was good. The action is not too high, not too low. The Spruce top is perfectly book-matched, all joins are absolutely spot on. Since I've owned it, and since the wood has 'settled in', the action has raised, as all new guitars do. It needs to be taken back to the store for adjustment (which is free for one year after pruchase).

Reliability/Durability : 9
With the fairly thin satin finish, the M225 feels very delicate, very light compared to other acoustic guitars.
I've owned mine for about 10 months now, and since then, if I look at it in the right light, I have worn the finish slightly with my right hand. But, what can one do about that.
But fortunately I'm yet to mark or dent it. (I hope I never do, I love my Maton!)
The light satin finish seems to add to the tone, I think its a good thing, despite its fragility.
The strap buttons are rock steady, I dont think I need a straplock.
Though I don't gig, I think the guitar would withstand live playing, and I do think it will last.

Customer Support : 9
I haven't dealt with Maton, as I (thankfully) haven't had a problem with my M225. Though, being in the same country as the manufacturer would probably help, if a problem did arise. The website (www.maton.com.au) has a wealth of information for customers, concerning guitar care, cleaning, etc. In fact I learned that with a Spruce top, I should NOT use lemon oil on it, as the oil may penetrate the timber and deaden the tone.
DON'T USE LEMON OIL ON SPRUCE!!!
We want to preserve that delicious Maton tone!

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for roughly 3-4 years, and as well as my beloved Maton, I own a Yamaha Pacifica electric (not a bad guitar either), and a Peavey Rage 158 amp. (I'm ready to hurl that amp out the window, the distortion sounds like s**t. Oh well, what can I expect for $189 AUD.)
If my Maton were stolen, I would buy a 12 guage shotgun and spend the rest of my days hunting down the sorry bastard that stole my guitar. If it were lost, I'd hit up my bank account for a new M225.
What do I love about it? Hmm... I might start with... Everything. I didn't really compare it with other guitars when I was looking at buying it. I had played Matons before, and I knew Maton had a great reputation (still does, mind you). Enough said. For $799 Australian dollars, why pay for an imported, more expensive, probably lower quality acoustic when I can pick up this masterpiece for a bargain.

I've played all guitars in my shop under ? 1.500,- and a lot of the martins and seagulls and ibanez and and and where looking very good, pickup-systems nice finish but....

The Maton is the best value for your money if you want a perfect instrument without any "noneed things". The Sound is perfectly balanced with a lot of harmonics. The neck is perfectly made and easily to play.

First I wanted to buy a special Martin offer, but then I played the Maton......

It is a TEN

Everything was perfect.

Not feature filled, but what you'd expect. Australian made, Australian Queensland silkwood back/sides, Queensland maple neck/headstock, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, plastic saddle and nut, chrome tuners, nitro-celulose finish, 21 frets. Neat finish, good looking, great feel out of the box, sweet smell. Nice tone, but typical Maton (slightly harsher than most acoustics, not to all tastes).

Sound : 10
From Travis to AC/DC, Cat Stevens to Offspring, for acoustic clarity and tone, this is an excellent guitar! You can play it right to each end of the fretboard and still maintain clarity. Very bright (typical Maton sound), very chimey on full chords. Can get a bit too bright if you use certain strings (I use Maton strings, and they're fine).

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
I bought it second hand, and I'm the third owner. One of the previous owners had it set-up slightly differently from the standard. No blemishes (save a water spot post-purchase), good action (not too high, but high enough for a little slide action if you like), minimal fret buzz if you dont hit it exactly. Finish probably a little light on for preventing dings and scratches...you really have to look after it. Buy a wall hanger for it, thats your best bet, as traditional stands could scratch it.

Reliability/Durability : 8
Great quality for the pricing, not electric, but would use it for live playing with no backup (save for a spare set of strings), rarely use it with a strap, but when I have I had no problems. Providing you care for it, it will serve you for a long time. The timber feels a little light (read: thin) for touring, etc, but on the whole, worth your while.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with Maton (factory or distributors).

Overall Rating : 10
This is my first acoustic. After playing a similarly priced Washburn, Fender, and a new Monterey, this won hands down when it came on the market. All my other gear is electric, so this was a first. If it was stolen, I'd cry first, then get another one (but probably the EM225, electric model). The lack of a cheap electrification option is my only bug about it. The 10 is for value...$450 buys you a seemingly $1000 guitar.

Made 02/2000 in Australia. 22 frets, solid sitka spruce soundboard,Queensland maple back, sides, neck + headstock rosewood fingerboard, nitro satin finish, chrome machine heads etc. Overall a clean looking acoustic with minimal decoration.

Sound : 10
Very easy to play with a nice bright sound wether you play finger style or use a pick (plectrum). I was assured by the dealer that the sound will get better as it ages, I can't wait!!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The action is very good and the build quality is exceptional, you wont find any scraps of dried glue or shavings floating round inside one of these babies.

Reliability/Durability : 8
My only nit-pick would be the nitro-cellulose finish. It does make for a light instrument and enhances that beautiful Maton sound. Unfortunately because it is also a satin finish it shows every scratch and ding as I have found out to my cost. Stay well clear of things like music stands etc. As I've said this is just a nit-pick and I have no doubt it will go the distance.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Not had to use it.

I also own a 20yr old Ibanez M340 Jumbo steel string acoustic and while it has a good tone the Maton would leave it for dead. The Ibanez is a great strumming guitar but for fingerpicking the Maton every time. Would I buy another Maton? You bet!
