In the late sixties, I had a guitar that I most foolishly traded off to buy a Les Paul gold top deluxe. It was a Ventures Model Mosrite, that I now know was made in late '63 or very early '64. It was serial #0175. It had most of the '63 (first model) characteristics - the body binding, Vibramute, spun knobs, large Ventures logo, non-logo pickups, sunburst body, neck and headstock, etc.etc. It did have a top jack, and a bolt on neck. In other words, it was one of a very few "transition" models between the first set neck etc. model and the later ones, when they had to economize on features and time, in order to meet the demand after the Ventures distribution deal made them suddenly extremely popular. I have kicked myself repeatedly since 1969 when I traded it, and have regretted what has been one of my most foolish decisions. ( If anyone knows of the existance/whereabouts of #0175, PLEASE tell me!!!!!)
About 3 years ago, I found an ad for a Japanese made Mosrite reproduction, and found the "Super Custom '64" model. It was exactly like my long lost original, in every detail, as far as features go. I was hesitant to buy one sight unseen, but eventually took the plunge. It is an outstanding guitar. I cannot find anything to critisize, other than price. I have played guitar both professionally and as an amateur for 45 years or more. The guitar is probably the best guitar I have owned, maybe even including #0175. The fit and finish is flawless, other than a couple small dings that I am totally and regretfully responsible for. The action is superb, though I realize that what contitutes perfect action for me will seem lousy to someone else. I love the sound, and again I believe it's as close to the original as one could get, though I haven't heard the original since '69, so... My buddy has an original, #2199, and they compare very favorably side by side. However, tone, like everything else is a subjective matter. Despite the Vibramute trem, it is possibly the most stable tuning guitar I have ever had. As you can tell, I like the guitar, very much. I wish I had the financial resources to buy the '63 side jack replica too.
Would I recommend them? The only one I've seen close up is the one I own, but nothing about it suggests to me that the others in the lineup wouldn't be as good. Other reviewers give them good marks.
