May, 2005 S type Nash built to an early 61 Strat spec. Lollar pickups, green guard, sonic blue, one-piece lightweight ash body, custom profile USACG neck, roseboard,12" radius, Kluson vintage style, locking tuners. trem bridge and tusq nut.Light aging. The aesthetic features are consistent with the early 61 Strat and the functional features retain the proper aesthetic while improving the function (locking tuners, tusq nut,5-way switch, etc.).

Non-musicians ask me about this guitar and remark about how great it sounds...It's pretty unusual when non-gear heads can distinguish a different sound..This Strat rings without being plugged in. Just a good combination of neck, body and build. Thin, old-school nitro finish does not inhibit the resonance. It's not just the pickups, as I have Lollars on other guitars that I own and have built. It's the summation of all the component parts and build quality.

Action was set up fast and low. I reset the action, pickup heights etc. to my preferences. Strats are setup sensitive, so I take my time and get it just right. see my previous review from 06....The overall build quality was great. Nash knows his stuff. He builds in small batches, probably similar to how Fender started their initial production in the 50's. If you want perfect, factory shining, poly coated instrments, there are many fine options. However, Nash builds a great players guitar and captures an old school vibe just right. This guitar continues to generate questions every time I take it out...People really believe it to be an old Fender Strat..

I took delivery of this in May 2005 and Bill Nash handled my questions and few concerns promptly and with the highest level of service...Far, far exceeded my expectations. I was nervous going into this buy. THe first time I ordered a custom built guitar...like ordering an original painting from an artist...how do you describe all of the subtle touches and nuances...I ordered the guitar and waited for it to be built. It is hard for any builder to provide what subtle nuance may be in a customers mind. Bill got it as humanly close as possible and was very patient...could not have been better...

been playing for over 40 years (it is hard to type that!) After almost 4 years, this is still my No. 1 Strat. I have many excellent guitars...the usual list of historic Gibson, Fender, Martin, Taylor, etc.I also build and repair guitars and know good build..I play this Strat because it is a players guitar: plays and sounds great and looks killer. It is great in the studio and live as it has a very, very distinctive sound. Many of the reviews on HC are based on a few hours of ownership. However, this review is based on years of ownership for those seriously considering a Nash. I hope this helps you in your decision and best of luck.

It's a vintage Strat replica so a 10 because you know exactly what you're getting. Alder, maple and rosewood. Pickups are Lollars. In addition, you get slightly more modern feeling frets, and THAT finish job, which I include in features as it's one of the things you look for in a Nash. Mine's a lefty sunburst late '65 with a medium relic job. Bought 10 months ago in the UK through Trans Am (ordered 6 months before that!), so no honeymoon review here.

Unplugged, more resonant than average, quite Stratty even without an amp which is a good sign. Plugged in - fantastic! Bridge is bright without being harsh, neck is totally delicious, middle nicely balances, pos 2 and 4 have all the Strat quack you need, but more musical than I've come across for ages. Details of your tone spring out, it feeds back in tune effortlessly with gain, roars if you want it to, and cries like a baby - fantastic.

Neck joint airtight - a big factor in the resonance I feel. Intonation great, tuners and trem positive and working perfectly, despite relicing. Sunburst relic finish convincing - slightly more matt than I've seen on other relics and the real thing, but this is down to the ultra thin 100% nitro finish and is addressed on Bill's website. Relicing generally very good - slightly over zealous in places but I'm probably just being picky. Trem intonation screws a bit too well aged - two were stuck fast and the head slots mashed when I tried to adjust them.
Set-up not so good - neck was bowed, nut was a total disaster (string spacings very clearly unevenly spaced - had to get a new nut made for ??30 - not acceptable on a guitar in this price bracket). Rosewood fretboard was quite light and dry as a bone - I'm still oiling it now. It was the only bit of the guitar that looked new as oldies seemed to have darker rosewood boards - it'll probably darken with play and oiling. Back of the neck delicious though - finish rubbed back - quick and really positive-feeling. Aging of finish on neck spot-on - not too orange as I've seen on some relics. Fret job perfect.

It's a Strat so I wouldn't gig without a backup because of tuning after a string bust. That said, I'd send it into battle. It's nails. No worries here.

Helpful and friendly guy at Trans Am - knows his stuff. That said, the guitar came with the wrong headstock shape! I ordered an early 60s Strat, but got a transition '65/'66. I felt sick after waiting 6 months only to get the wrong thing out of it's case. He dealt with the problem effectively by offering me a replacement entirely at his expense. I didn't want to wait even longer, however, so I passed and I've now grown to love my oversized beauty - looks the business and is a bit different - wouldn't trade it for anything now.

I play in a couple of bands - mainly pop, rock and blues. I use a Lonestar Special and this Strat sounds great through it. I think an 8 here. I might buy another if it was stolen - the sound is certainly excellent. However the long wait, plus the wrong headstock, plus the vile nut, dry fingerboard and dodgy setup might put me off, although to be fair, all these were fixable problems, albeit at further expense. It's just that you don't expect all that on such an expensive instrument. Nash may say that it's all about the sound, and maybe he's right, but people buy his instruments for the looks, reliability and finishing just as much, because they can't afford to buy their real dream instruments (or take out their investment grade ones!) and they still want people to drool at gigs. I'll hold my hands up to that without hesitation! Like others have said, maybe Nash's quality control and attention to detail is slipping as the orders pile in which is a big shame. I'd probably buy one if I saw one, but I don't think I'd order another to be honest.

Your basic partsocaster. This is the S-57 Timewarp with maple neck. 9.5 radius board. Ash body with Louisiana Roadhouse relic. 2-tone sunburst. S/S/S with Lollar Hybrid pickups. All other parts are standard strat fare. Came with a gig bag(cheap).

This sounds like a classic 50's strat but it could be so much more. The only saving grace of this guitar is the Lollar pickups and the good quality pots/wiring(you could get that on any guitar and save some big cash). Here is the problem: I believed the hype and bought it unplayed believing the Nash only chose the best quality bodies/wood. This one is a dead piece of lumbar and has no ring or resonance. Really quite pathetic. You can put $200 pickups on a turd and it will sound about as good.

Here we go again. More disappointment. The grain on the see through nitro body was pretty, and the nitro seemed fine, but the relic job just looked like somebody threw a screwdriver at it. Neck pocket was air-tight which is a must but it didn't add to the resonance....this thing is a dead log. Fretwork was nice with no sharp edges. Nut poorly cut. Low E to close to the top edge of the neck and falls of with vibrato. Unacceptable for an expensive parts guitar.

I've been playing 15 years(rock/blues/country/folk) and I certainly know a nice instrument when I get my hands on one. My treasures are a Gibson 57 Historic LP, a 1994 PRS McCarty, and a Reverend Avenger Bugeye. I have owned about 60 guitars and I sell them off if they don't have that mojo. I blame myself for believing the hype on these instead of getting my hands on one first. If the body wood is dead the guitar is dead. Simple as that. You can't polish a turd by putting expensive pickups on it. I have Mexican Jimmie Vaughan strats that blow this away. Maybe there are nice ones out there but this one wasn't one of them. Making this "luthier(this is a joke)" no more trustworthy than Fender or Gibson. The sad thing really is that Reverend has an Asian line of guitars for 1/3 of the price that go head to head with this sad sack. Also, for the money, you can get an excellent condition used Melancon, Anderson, Grosh, Suhr. The more I think about it I really am a moron. Oh well, lesson learned. EBAY here it comes. Standard strat style - apparently a copy of a 1957 strat - Ash body, maple V shape neck, Lollar pickups, 100% nitro finish, medium relic, jumbo frets. The neck has been sanded down (see almost any picture of a Nash guitar). I thought this would feel rough but it doesnt - its smooth, almost as if its been lacquered. Added bonus is that one tone controls the neck, the other controls both the middle and bridge pickup.
Dont see how you can rate down a strat just because its a basic strat...so, because of the pickup wiring and the nitro finish and the bigger frets, ill rate it 10!Better that your average strat.

Great. Has a slight woody sound but its pure strat all the way. Not too harsh, not muddy either. Ive owned a few strats, including a Suhr and some Fenders and this is as much a strat as the Suhr (dont even talk to me about Fender!).
As good as it gets. Lollars are fab too.

When the guitar came from the dealer (Alpha Audio works) I was surprised how low the action was. There was NO fret rattle or buzz, but it was even lower than some of my other Andersons or Suhr. To be honest, a little too low for my liking but i cant fault it as theres no fret buzz. I had read that Bill sets them up low. String broke when i was tuning up for the 1st time!
Plays great and the gear works no prob despite the ageing, so no probs there. The nirto finish marks easily....but i dont care - its a relic so it doesnt matter!!! Take it to a gig, it gets a bash, a chip...it doesnt matter.
I'm no expert on relics but i'd say this is one area where the guitar does look to have been 'rushed'. Even i can tell it doesnt look 100% genuine and this is one area, possibly the only area, where a Fender relic looks better. In every other way this is better than any Fender custom shop ive played.
Because the relic factor is a big deal with this, i have to rate it down a little. However, balance that with the great set up Bill Nash is known for.

Its already a relic so its not like you can really damage it much. It doesnt matter that the nitro is easily marked because its a relic!

I've seen some people give that crap scores because its not a Fender and because its a parts guitar. Theyve said anyone can buy the parts and bilud it in their basement or garage. SO WHY DIDNT THEY??! Why spend big $$ on a Nash and then slag it off? Because even with the parts, most people couldnt build it the way Nash does and thats why we all buy someone elses guitar.
Ive read that Nash used to sell guitar for around $1000 and that would be a bargain. I paid around $1600 which is still great value for a guitar that miles better than a Fender (and much cheaper).
However, at this price, its similar to a used Suhr or Tom Anderson...and thats where i would spend my money next time! Great guitar tho.

Amazing, I swear this guitar sounds like a strat even before you plug it in. I've been hearing a sound in my head for a few years and it has finally arrived in this faded red beauty. Rich, full, sustaining with added bite. It's really the sound of countless old records through a Fender amp. This might sound obvious, but it just sounds like a really good strat.

Great fret job, great finish, guitar plays like a dream. I've set it up with 11's and it fights back beautifully. It was a good set up from the dealer but surely everyone needs to set up their own guitar. Try the Haynes Stratocaster Manual if you live in the uk.

I've gigged it a few times and it has done a good job. I always have more than one guitar at gigs but only change the Nash for slide at the moment. Thing is, if it does get dinged I think I would be the only person to notice. It already looks very used.

I got this guitar from Transam Guitars here in the UK. I think they are great. Primarily because my guitar took a long time to arrive from the US and I was becoming quite grumpy about the whole thing, but Transam kept me informed and gave me a discount for the long wait. I would recommend this dealer whole heartedly and why I'm giving top marks.

I've been playing for 17 years and gigging regularly for the past four years. I don't own many guitars or amps but what I do own is quality stuff. I own a Fender Strat and a Gibson Les Paul and I love them both and think these companies do a great job. However, there is something special about my Nash and it feels like I've owned it for years. I want another one.

We play blues, Swing and Jump, it suits the style fine and I venture to say the Lollar pick-ups are the biggest contributer to the good sound, then the Callaham hardware followed by the set-up, after that the guitar goes down hill.
The Nash Guitar I received was not the best accoustically sounding guitar and the pickups are the saving grace.
The realization I came to is this: this a PARTS GUITAR, not a licensed product and the Nash guitar's production is going up every year from what I understand. Inconsistencies can slip throught the cracks in an effort to meet production demands and quality will also suffer when turning out bigger numbers, This is a fact well documented in any business production study. This can be an explanation of why my MIM Fender was on Par with Nash's guitar in terms of sound.

My Nash relic guitar was O.K. not the worst or not the best. When Nash first started turning out guitars, his price point was under 900, and less. This was a good deal, his price point has reached an equivalent of Fender Custom Shop guitars, read: not so good a deal. A Ford Escort for five grand back in the day was a good deal, A Ford Escort for ten grand is not. I like the relic look and when you have seem=n a lot of relics they can begin to look as though they are ahdering to a formula for doing this. The Nash guitar is going in this direction.
It was set up fine, and how can you detect flaws ina relic? hmm...it plyed well but again is not superior to my Robert Cray MIM Strat. THis is a great deal of a guitar and despite what you may think oif Fender, they are chugging along nicely turning out a great product.

Yes this guitar can hold up to gigs, Hardware is great, it is Callaham, Finish is fine I do not gig without a back up anyway. I want to make it clear, I have played a lot of guitars, and the Nash is simply average, I do not understand what all the hype is about.
The wood is outsourced and as such is subject to the inconsistencies that go with buying from a supplier of parts. What he gets, you can too! He does not specially select wood, cut it and match it as a luthier does. THere is nothing magic about it.

In the early days, Nash was easy to get a hold of, his dealer network is suffering. I found Phil's Guitars very unhelpful, bordering on arrogant. E-mails went unanswered, questions ignored and responses ambiguous.
My rating for this is low considering the price I paid for this guitar and the supposed quality.

I would not buy another guitar from Bill Nash. I am happy for him, his success, and positive outcome from his Fender legal woes. In the begining, Nash's guitars were a good value for the money and luckily I turned mine for a break-even result.
I predict when the next 'big thing' comes on the market Nash's guitars will fade into the obscure background. He is riding a wave of popularity that has begun to crest and is now beginning to break. These guitars will not hold any real reasale value.
I wish Bill Nash stuck to his original vision of making Parts guitars affordable, that is what they are, PARTS GUITARS. Bill Nash is NOT a Luthier. He knows how to finish, set-up and assemble PARTS. Sometimes good sometimes not.

There is a reason why everyone is pyscho for Bill Nash's gear. If you like vintage looking/sounding, though modern playing Strats and Teles this guy is has a God given gift to make an unbelievably amazing guitar.
I have 2 of the Strats and have played about 6 in total. This review if for my 2006 Bill Nash Strat. In brief: This is not a PRE-CBS Vintage Strat clone. Its better.
Clinically: Assembled in Olympia, Washington. It is based upon a '63 Strat but the color, Teal Green, and the # of frets, 22, and the electronics suggest otherwise. It is a medium weight (guessing 4 or 4.5 lb) 2 piece Alder Body. Bigger C shape maple neck with thick cut rosewood slab. The back of the neck has some slight flame and dark chocolate colored fretboard has 22 Medium jumbo frets (again 22 not 21... vintage purists can hit the back button now).
Aesthetically, the color, custom color teal green, came out in '65 maybe late '64 but not '63. The 5 way switch is not pre-cbs too. The finish is all nitro and the body relicing/aging is a little more agressive than I think most players see...except for the SRV and Rory Gallagher models.... but I honestly feel the hardware is over-reliced. .. for this reason alone I can't give it a 10.
The feel: The guitar is super resonant and it vibrates against my body in an almost erotic way. Everything works perfectly, but there are tradeoffs on the finish. The neck is deeply ambered and feels perfect. The frets are expertly done. It plays in tune all the way up the neck (I have NEVER played a vintage strat that wasn't modified and had intonation all the way up the fretboard.) The neck is so slippery smooth and worn in I can't believe how easy it is to play odd chords and single note runs. Aged Green guard and back plate.

The Lollar pickups have vintage and modern tones all wrapped up in their juicy goodness (Jason Lollar is another Washington state genius... must be the water.) It sounds like what a strat sounds like on countless recordings.... this means some single coil noise and hum... I think it is the nature of the beast. It is very well matched to my Fender amps, a Prosonic combo and a Deluxe Reverb reissue. It is just the classic Fender sound and I like to play everything from Surf and Country to Beatle-esque pop to Metal to Jazz. It is so articulate it makes me want to be a better player. The tone knobs actually make a difference and backing off the volume on the guitar further tweaks tone that comes from the amp. Simply amazing. It doesn't do the Jackson into Mesa saturated humbucker thing... nor would I expect it too... But with the dual gain channels on the prosonic I can almost fake a metal-thing... think Scorpions. Scores a perfect 10 here.

Bill Nash set this guitar up so well I am sure he'd could have made a ton of dough doing this for celebrity clients in LA or Nashville or New York. His setup work is on par with the legendary guys like Mike Lull in Seattle and Gary Brawer in San Francisco. The quality control on his finish work is staggering. Plus he has a couple of tricks on his website for keeping strats in tune. I've been playing a long time and I wished I had known of them a long time ago. Overall, the guitar is a thing of reliced beauty.

This guitar is purpose built for live playing... lots of hard playing and idiot behavior... in short ideal for anyone who plays music with their friends or in bars.
All the hardware is first class (gotoh) and though aged heavily it is functionally perfect.
The finish is already worn and dinged so no issues about that.
Regarding reliability: This thing is idiot proof.... Leo Fender was a genuis. Always bring extra strings and learn to do a version of the tuning song (i.e., cleverly chat up the aucience while quickly installing/stretching/tuning your guitar string.)

He has a good rep. Historically, he answered his email quickly and, in a recent email exchange, he was the guy you have heard about, genuine and deep.
regardin warranty work: Now that you need to go through his retailer network... it hasn't been made real clear to me how this changes his 2 year warranty. Given how success can and does change people, I do fear that as he grows in stature and reputation direct contact will be lost with the builder. I'm sure this was a similar hurdle that Anderson, Collings, and PRS all faced too... For now he rates a 10. Time will tell otherwise.

Been playing over 20 years. I own some top gear right now. Over the years I have played/owned/enjoyed the holy grail instruments. Here are my rambling thoughts on Bill Nash and his fine guitars:
Ever wished you were one of those guys who bought PRS' back in 86 or 87 when you first saw them. Sure they were big money, but you passed because your $2000 would buy a "real" vintage instrument. Les Pauls were $600 and Early 70's Strats were $450 to 500... and no one had vintage Strats... even the ones that circulated seemed lifeless. I remember hearing about 2 different guys in the Bay area that made Strat and Tele clones that were spot-on and there was a guy in LA who made '59 Les Pauls... well, as the story goes Slash made that guy famous. The Las Vegas Guitar Gnome, Ed Roman, has at least got one story straight... so many vintage strats are counterfit that you'd be an idiot plunking down your dough for one. Ding it and it'll cost you too. Talk about being scared to play something that devalues junior's college fund. These guitars are now $3500 plus.
Guitar Center sells new American strats for $1,000 and they are really quite good. For $400 more you get a custom made instrument that was hand assembled and painted by a gifted artist who happens to be an ex-session guitarist from LA.
I have come to think of relic guitars were form of visual viagra. and Nash's Strats & teles are like a perpetual weekend of a viagrathon in Las Vegas.
Here's the bottom line on Nash's guitars: Have you checked the price on a "pseudo-real" custom color vintage strat? Can you say $35k plus... are you kidding me? This is a no-brainer. His guitars have gone up by $500 in three years and the demand is staggering. Even on Ebay the depreciation is negliable and in some cases profits are already being reaped.
As for me: I just want to buy a nice jazz bass, a rosewood 63 tele, a maple 52 tele and a 58 strat in Lake placid blue before the rest of you guys decide its time to pull the trigger too and get one.

I ordered this with Lollar pickups on the recommendation of the UK dealer and I am not disappointed. These are the best sounding pups I have heard in any Strat. I play mainly heavy style rock sort of like Free meets Clutch meets Neil Young!! I use a Fender Deluxe USA built copy with no pedals - just me , my Nash and my amp. Tone & Sustain are my thing and the Nash gives me everything I need & more. I have now sold my Fender Custom Shop Strats as they just do not come close to the Nash.

My guitar arrived set up very nicely and ready to go from the box, a medium low action & D'Addario 10's as specified. The pickups were set just right and sound unbelievable. The frets are medium gauge and suit my style as I like to use sustain & feedback a lot using string bends & pull on the trem arm. Trem set just as requested also with a little lift for that Neil Yound feedback effect. Everything else seems so sweet & well made that I have no complaints at all.

I have only dealt with Trans Am Guitars who supplied my guitar & they have been great. I have bought many many guitars over the years (28!) & I can say that this purchase has been my most enjoyable. I have heard good things about Nash in the USA, the way he deals with his customers and so on and I guess he has picked dealers that he believes will keep up with his standards. Trans Am have been a great help throughout the process & I can recommend them as well as the guitar!

I love the feel, the back of the neck is just so good, I love the pickups and the overall look the medium relicing is perfect with all rusted parts playing like new - weird!

With the Lollers and the great action, the guitar sounds awesome and is an easy player.
I play all Blues music from Muddy to Hendrix and SRV and the Nash is a perfect fit.
My current rig consists of a Fender Twin and a Dr. Z Maz18. I split amps through a Switchbone after the Vox wah. I usually run no affects on the Z and let it break up on its own but keep a TS808 in front of it. On the Twin side, it heads from the Switchbone to a Fulltone FD2, OCD and Mini-Deja Vibe to the reverb channel set to bright.

I had been hearing absurd, blasphemous things about how good Nash guitars were, and now I can honestly say that it's all true. At the time I bought it, I was able to compare it to an orginial '57 Strat, and the Nash slaughtered it. That particular '57 wasn't a stellar piece, but get this: I then brought it home and A/B'd it with the love of my life, my original '65 Strat--a killer guitar that I've owned and played for years--and the Nash is in every way it's equal. I know that sounds like crack induced heresy, but it's true. Astounding.

Too damn cool. I don't know how he does it. Most relics out there look like new guitars that the Samsonite gorilla to bashed around a bit. Bill Nash is an artist in the same way Tom Murphy is--the wear is realistic and appropriate. The neck is also flawless, with a great worn finish on the back that plays very fast and feels right. The neck itself is an interesting shape for a Strat. It's fairly wide, and feels a lot like my '63 SG, which I love, but the fretwork on the Nash is better, great for bends. Most Strat lovers are not fans of Gibson necks, but this one is perfect for me.

I've only owned it for a month or so, but in that time it's been fairly well abused on stage (rock'n roll baby) and has never faltered.

I probably wouldn't bother Bill unless there was a serious failing, but I've heard he's a good guy.

I have more guitars than Carter has liver pills--including lots of vintage stuff. My first guitar was a '65 Strat. Since it became too valuable to bring out to gigs, I've been searching for something to take its place. Up until I played the Nash, I pretty much thought I'd have to settle for a lesser guitar. Not anymore. This is a world class instrument in every way, at a price that makes me want to send Bill more money just to clear my conscience.
