So, earlier this year I tried a Florence Tele belonging to Richard from the band Spacehog. It was a relic type with a massive neck and weighed next to nothing (around 6lbs). Unplugged it sounded almost like an acoustic, I wanted one. It really made my USA 90s tele seem very ordinary and bland. Unfortunately a Florance costs 2 grand or so, i decided to find something similar for less. After trawling through the web I found Nash guitars and asked Bill to make one to these specs:
* As light as possible ash body, white with tortie scratchplate
* Tinted v shaped (boatneck according to Warmoth, where Bill orders them form) neck, 7 1/4 inch radius rosewood fretboard with thin vintage frets.
* All finished in nitro-cellulose lacquer. This was important to me.
* Rio Grande tallboy pickups
* All vintage style hardware: 3 piece compensated brass saddles, kluson repro tuners etc.
* Black "Gator" case which is flimsy and poorly put together. I saw one other which reinforced this opinion.
The point is that Bill can make a Fen*er type guitar to any specs you can think up, probably limited only by what wood and hardware he can buy. He makes a mean Relic too, mine is not Reliced, it seems like cheating somehow...

I love telecasters and this is a good one. Fundamentally it sounds like a tele - not surprisingly, though there is a an easily appreciable difference between this and the standard Fender offering. The nash sounds bouncier, more alive, warmer and deeper, with slightly higher output and greater difference between pickup selections. You could easily play jazz through ten neck unit. Sustains very well. The bridge pickup does the usual sprangy stuff. Sounds great.
Action, Fit, & Finish

The action when received was very low for a vintage profile fretboard, I think weather conditions and general settling in accounted for the buzzing which stared to occur around the 10th fret on the top 4 strings. I upped the bridge saddles a little and problem solved, the action is still pretty low.
The top E is maybe a little close to the treble side of the board, other than that it feels very slick.
Being picky the neck has some tiny spots of paint under the lacquer. I see this as unimportant though I know some people don't. The body also has tiny yellow stain near the neck pocket. Generally it's well finished and looks beautiful in my lovingly gazing eyes. Perhaps the yellow stain is from me drooling?
The nut has some tooling marks. It's well cut.
The only thing that bothers me is the weight - 7 1/2 lbs. It's certainly not heavy but I was dissapointed as the 3 other Nashes I've encountered weighed a fair bit less. The lesson to learned here is to be very definite when specifying what you want.

Well, this section is a bit redundant as we all know what telecasters are like don't we? The only part I don't trust entirely is the jack socket which has a tendency to try to work itself loose, as on all teles.

Small companies such as this one need to give great support as they drum up business through word of mouth, Bill seems to be no exception. He's a friendly guy and fine to deal with, happy to talk on the phone etc. He answers emails at like 5 in the morning!

I've been playing for 19 years and use a little cornell rambler (basically a half power Matchless SC30 made by Dennis Cornell in England www.dc-developments.com )amp. I've got rid of most of my gear that was lying around unused, my old tele paid for half of this guitar. I'm happy I sold that one and bought this one.
Comparing to a Fender Custom shop guitar, this one is totally nitro finished, you get the exact neck shape, colour, pickups, woods etc that you want, you get personalised customer service and it costs less. Maybe it loses out on resale value, I don't know, though why would you want to sell a guitar that has been made for you?
To justify this acquisition I thought "You only live once" so why not get one really nice guitar. It should last a lifetime, afterall.
