I have the Optek Fretlight FG-200. I have read somewhere that they only made 3000 of these.

Sound : 10
I play my Fretlight through a Yahama G50-410 and a distortion pedal

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
It was set up well from the factory. The pickups were adjusted well. Nicely made with no flaws.

Reliability/Durability : 7
I have done a few gigs with the guitar and it proved me well. I can depend on it.

I have a black strat version with three single coil pickups
like a regular strat.

I am an advanced player and gig regularly. This guitar does not sound good enough for stage use in my opinion, but is an incredible learning / instruction tool. By rotating the knobs you can see the relationships between scales, modes etc and thusly can leverage whatever knowledge you have to a higher plateau of capability in short fashion.

If you are serious about becoming a good player, this instrument will get you there fast with minimal effort.

you still have to do the work, but it will magnify the benefit of time spent trying to improve.

Made 1992-1997
Strat style body...
Black in color.
LED's in the neck show Chords, Scales, modes etc...
Incredibly useful as a learning aid.
As a guitar I Found the Neck a little on the chunky side. More than likely to accomidate the LED's.
The model I have has only the single humbucker near the bridge. I think this model is kind of Rare, most have the single coils or a combination of.
Fit and Finish are of high quality.

Sound : 7
Guitar is easy to play.
Kind of heavy but comfortable.
I play it through my MESA Boogie Mark IV.
The stock pickup has a decent sound.
The guitar will acheive a decent amount of different sounds.
If your looking for the Heavey metal crunch you will want to drop a Seymour Duncan in it.
The power cable for the LED's is not the original "Dual" cable that Optek offered. It is almost impossible to find the original cable. You can however make your own rather easy.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
I bought the guitar in NEW/Used condtiton. It was hardly used at all. Still had the factory set-up. The overall fit and finish (simple, not to busy)is really good.
THe only gripe I can find is the jack for the Power cord.
It seems to, not hold the cord very tightly.
This should be an easy fix.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This guitar should withstand a lot of live gigs.
The finish seems to be thick and durable.
I would use this guitar live for show (LED's) mainly.
I say this because I have 10 other guitars that have a thinner neck and I am more accustomed to them. However if this was the only guitar I had I would not hesitate to use it.

Well, the company is out of business.
"Restructuring".
Great product, but the new price is way out of most new guitarist price range ($1,000.00 +). Probablly why they went under.
Still a quality product. I have had No problems with the one I own.
I gave the rating of 2 beacuse I did email the company and the head guru did respond.
SO they know we are out here.
Support I found from other owners.....You know who you are so keep in touch with each other !!
IF you need the manual, or video, tape, cd, I can help....

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing for a long....time.....
I love the conveince of having all the scales chords etc. right there with me all the time.
Turn the LED's On and the information is Literally at your finger tips.
I wish I had the original "dual" power cord.
I think if you want one you will need to be willing to pay at least $500+ for one. They are not that common, and those who have them either do not want to part with them or will want "New Prices" for them.
The new prices ($1,000.00 +) are very hard to justify, unless it is mint.
I have the manual, video, cd, tape, if you need it.
They made an Accoustic version as well. Incredibly RARE right Don?

Would like to urge the establishment of an "Optek Fretlight" USER'S
Group devoted to discussions about this incredible instrument that
is no longer manufactured! Have 2-FG-200 "Fretlight" Stratocasters, one
black the other a cherryburst! These guitars came off the same mfg.
line as Washburn, Epiphone, Ibanez....alot of quality in these guitars. Plays & sounds like a "Strat" but this computerized guitar's
LED's embedded in the fretboard light up the way to all the chords/
scales/notes. Optek made these from 1992 thru 1997! Selling the black
unit in Harmony Central classifieds. Would like to hear from other
Optek "Fretlight" owners, no matter the model they own.

Great Action

Don't ask Optek for help, because they are useless since they are out
of business. My cherryburst had on board computer problems. They
could not supply me with tech support, not even a schematic!!! Thank
goodness, I know a retired, electronics engineer who quickly repaired
the problem.

USELESS!!!

These are so rare these days, no one wishes to part with there Optek!
I've seen these going as much as $1500.00 on ebay and other classified
media. Want to hear from other Optek owners!!!!
