I LOVE this guitar. As soon as I picked it up I knew I was getting it. The sound is probably the best I have heard and I own a lot of guitars. Ed Roman Rockingbird w/Duncan blackback pickups, Washburn Idol with Duncan's, B.C. Rich Mockingbird's with EMGs etc. etc. This guitar sounds better than any of mine. Something about the combination of wood/pickup is truely unique.. Tons of tight bite and nice sustain.. Rich and full of power. I'm using this guitar with my new EVH 5150III head and cab.. That probably has something to do with why it sounds so great. Ed probably used one of his Woflies when he worked on the new head.

The one I got is black with cream edge, has the liscened Floyd Rose, Bird's Eye Maple neck, made in 96' american. I have one of the original humbuckers, a single coil, as well as a Sustainer in it so i have like 3 knobs and 3 selector switches. Really, this one i have, has been modified, but its got a ton, including the tremelo, one of the most decked out guitars I've seen.

This guitar does not suit my stlye, well just not all the time, it isn't too versitale, and it seems to bee made to emulate a more metal song, and the clean channel isn't too great but it can perfectly imitate EVH's sound, and being his signature model i guess thats fine, but you;ll have to put it through a few pedals to get that sound you really want.

I bought this used, it was unbelievable when i got it, but then the Tremelo Bridge went out of place, and its never been the same, and now i need to adjust to torision rod and get the guitar set up. The pick-ups are awesome though, i love the Sustainer, especially with the tremelo, you can get some pretty annoying sounds out of it. The guitars finish is great, and it won't dent or chip too easily but its constantly needing maitanance, ,mostly with the bridge and Floyd rose system.

I have made the mistake of relying on this guitar, way too many times, too fancy for myself, to me, my Fender American Telecaster destroys this guitar, it just gets way more and better sound out of it, and more of YOUR sound, not a famous guitar player, and is more reliable. I would not use this alone anymore, but the finish is very good as are the strap buttons, but really, that doesn't acount for much, haven't your guitar scratched and bumped up ain't gonna change your tone

I've been playing for almost 7 years, and have owned this guitar for a year, a painful year, i hate this guitar so much but i love it too,but im finnaly gonna get rid of it. When it works its pretty beautiful, its an extremely nice guitar to look at and when i first got it, it was heavenly, it has everything, but thats the problem, I really wish it had no Floyd Rose, damn thing. Like I said , I have a Fender American Telecaster (2003) and I choose that over this one now, and run it through a Traynor custom valve 40 (i must say is an amazing amp), but overall, if you like hard rock and metal, this is a great guitar, mine just isn't so anymore, but it lacks vesitality and if you like any mellower rock, like myself, your best of staying away from this one.

This is a great guitar for rock, everything from The Who and Floyd, to Rush and Metallica. The pups push serious tone and amplitude for lead work, both neck and bridge. Sustain is LP-esque. On the neck pup with careful tweaking of vol and tone knobs, it will even do a nice clean blues/jazz tone. I'm playing it through a Laney ARO Pro-Tube Lead 100W head and 1960A 4x12, as well as a Peavey VT Classic 212. Effects include Crybay Classic, Boss Compressor, SD-1, DS-1, Chorus, and DD-3, and sometimes a Digitech RP-1. The Wolfie sounds great through everything. Consider this a 10 rating, with one point held back to leave room for someone to make the perfect guitar that does everything perfectly! ;)

I bought this used, and I'm not sure whether the pervious owner adjusted the action at all, but for me is was perfect, as was the intonation. It remains perfect. Not an off note up or down the nect. Pickups may be the best I have ever heard. Workmanship is excellent throughout, not a single flaw. I took a look inside at the wiring and electronics and all is top notch.

Peavey provides excellent one-on-one customer support. They also make great gear. They get a bad rap because they also have made some cheap (aka, entry-level, but good value) gear over the years, but you get what you pay for, and Peavey is good stuff that gets the job done.

I've been playing since 1987, and I have owned and/or played various Gibsons, Guilds, Ibanez, Epiphones, Fenders, PRS, etc., and I have settled on three: The Wolfie (my hot lead machine), a Gibson Nighthawk (my Strat stand-in that does lovely warm to bright clean tones), and a Guild S-100 (blues rock to defined crunch... somewhere between an SG and LP). The Peavey is simply excellent at what it does.

Mine (was) a 2001 dark cherry-burst wolfie. Most everyone has listed the features. I'm going to keep it simple.
Sound
:

This guitar had a grood tone, especially with the bridge p/u. I always thought the neck p/u lacked a little clarity for soloing, kind of muddy and bland. It sounded good when in the middle position for those bluesy riffs though. I previously owned a Wolfgang special stop-tail before this one (see reviews). It quite honestly had better all around sound that this one.

These guitars always played great off the rack, mine was no exception. The finish on this guitar was beautiful no concerns there. My main concern with these guitars though is...
that the necks seem to be too narrow (for me anyway). They dont leave enough space for the E strings. If I vibrato the top or bottom E strings even a little the string rolls off the side of the neck. I'm not going to knock it that much because part of it may be my playing style, but in the end it was what convinced me to sell it.

Like I said I've owned 2 (to date). The first one has soldering issues on the p/u selector switch. This one had to have the vol. pot replaced and I fought with the input jack on occasion.

I've been playing for over 20 years. Ive owned various Fenders, Gibsons, Peaveys, Epi's, etc... I really like Wolfie's I think they play really smooth and fast. I will probably own one again, but I will probably stick with a plain ol' Special-stoptail model. For the money (in my opinion) the difference in playability and tone is none, between the high end and special models.

Gosh, the first thing that i want to talk about is the neck, oh my gosh. It blows every guitar neck out of the water. Not many features, just tone and volume, but i do have a floyd rose and the D-tuna that comes with it. THe D-tuna is something that i thought could never work, but i have had no problems with it and i have owned the guitar for about 2 years now. The floyd rose is pretty good, it can still knock it out of tune quick, but over all is the best lock system i have ever used.

Everyones covered the features, highlights include d-tuna, peavey floyd rose, and pearloid key schaller tuners. Awesome thick flame maple arched top that is about 5//8" thick.
Sound
:

Pure EVH sound. You know what you get here. With the thick maple top the sound is very clear and articulate, chords ring out each individual notes very well. Harmonics are clean and nice. Even clean you can almost sound like a telecaster. Think finish what you started type tone. The best matching pickup set I have ever heard. Lots of pickups sound good, but very very few sound this good together. I would give it a ten, but I know some people would like to have a coild split, though if you want a strat sound why would you be playing a wolfie anyway?
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
Action is amazing, plays easier and better than anything I have ever had my hands on. The trem is recessed down in the body just a bit and makes for the perfect angle for the strings top sit on the fretboard. The setup is perfect, I would not even touch the pickup height, perfect. Frets are immaculate, the neck is unbelievable, it fits better than tom anderson could dream of. Swithchcraft jack, nice electronics, EVH wouldn't have put anything in here that is not top notch. The sculpted neck cutaway makes for superior access to the upper frets.
Reliability/Durability
:

I believe it is a very reliable instrument. In fact I would almost take it to a gig without a tuner if I had to. Once you get it in tune, if you got the strings stretched out enough, you won't go out of tune, and with the d-tuna you don't even have to tune down for drop d. Poly finish should be durable as you will find.

2003 Model, made in Meridian ( I think Leaksburg had already shut down?). Standard Archtop model, you already know the specs from previous posts, so I won't get into all that. One thing different about mine is the fretboard...it's Rosewood. Body is Gloss Black, which means it's all Basswood. Mine is the trem model. I give it a 9 here due to the fact that this guitar is extremely well built. No gaps in neck pocket, excellent electronics, and overall construction. Very nice.
Sound
:

It's a pretty versitle box as it comes. I'm going to have a coil split done on the neck pup, to coax a bit more of the the strat-type tones, but that's just something I want to have done on this one. I play mostly clean, country type music, some light rock, and a bit of blues, etc. I know this is a guitar built by a rocker for rockers, but I am very pleased with the clean tones. The basswood body and Rosewood board give it a bit more "punch" in the mids, and really opens it up for a wide variety of tones. Also, this guitar has a "working" tone pot....very linear in it's abilty to affect the tone with small adjustments. I give it a 9 here as well.

This is where I will lay out a 10...it came from the dealer (mail order) ready to play out of the box. Intonation, action was dead on. If it weren't just my way, I could have played the thing for a week with the original strings as well...but I always change 'em right off. Binding, paint, all cosmetics are absolutely perfect I can't see a flaw anywhere. VERY NICE JOB

Yep, it's a Peavey. Whether or not you're a fan of Peavey gear, I have to say I've never owned a Peavey product that wasn't tough and durable. I don't gig, so don't have to worry about a backup, but if I did, I'd never go without one...I'd just have to have another Wolfie!

Peavey's customer support is excellent. There is a forum on the website, and you can get pretty much ANY question answered. There are Peavey empoyees that monitor it, and you can even post your serial#, and they'll reply with the build date, etc. I've never had to use the warranty service, but from what I've read by other users, it's top shelf.

I've been playing for a bit over 30 years, and have had my share of pretty much the gamut of guitars and gear. I've owned 2 Les Pauls, a tone of copies, some Strats, Teles, Carvins, Godin, etc. I purchased a T-60 in '79, and kept that one for about 6 years and traded it in...(wish I hadn't now). This is my 2nd Wolfgang (I lost the other one after loaning it out to a "friend"). The first time I played one in a store, I knew it was "my" guitar. The scale, shape and size of the neck and the overal comfort factor in playing this guitar made me throw rocks at the others. I DO NOT mean to imply that no one else makes as good a guitar, they do....just not for me. If this one gets lost or stolen I'll do what I did the last time....get another. I'm also wanting to get my hands on a Firenza w/P 90's. Overall, for me, this is as good as it gets. It's a much better guitar than I am a player, and that's fine by me. I enjoy playing it, and can't see me without one.

My Wolfgang has a green flame maple arch top laminated on a basswood body, highly figured birdseye maple neck, 2 humbucking pick-ups in Les Paul style tandem, Schaller tuners, Floyd Rose tremolo with a drop 'D' device on the low 'E' string and a case. I am most disappointed that the guitar doesn't have more tone options like a single coil pick-up or a coil split on the neck pick-up....then again, it is an Eddie Van Halen guitar and he doesn't use those things so...
Sound
:
7
In getting a Van Halen type sound this guitar is excellent....any other sound, just about, sucks...the difference in sound between the two humbuckers is huge, the bridge pick-up is too bright and cuts like a knife while the neck pick-up has too much low-end in comparison. When trying to compensate by adjusting your EQ on the amp or distortion/overdrive devices one or the other suffers (by the way my amps and pedals are all top o' the line boutique gear: Keeley, Analogman, Fender Custom Shop etc...)so pick-up balance sucks. The frets on the neck are thin and tall making for a difficult job of playing if your style incorporates a lot of sliding your fingers up and down the neck on strings like my style of playing does. Otherwise the frets are a bonus for tapping out harmonics and righthand hammer-ons ala Eddie (duh, figures...)a lot easier than my Custom Shop Strat. The guitar is quiet and seems well wired as far as electronics go. The pick-up selector switch feels kinda cheap with a lot of play between the settings, yet functions well.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
The guitar was bought from ebay brand new. Set-up may not have been factory, because I'm not sure if the guy selling it fumbled with it or not...set-up was terrible, the action was a mile high, tremolo tension was way too heavy, so, I had to do much fine tuning to get the thing playable. After the adjustments the guitar was fine. The fit and finish of the guitar is flawless, stunning job really...the woods are all exotic looking and the guitar is put together well. Peavey did a great job here (I own or have owned them all: PRS, Gibsons, Fenders, Jacksons, Andersons, Custom ESPs etc...). After setting up the guitar it looks and plays excellent. It wants to be played fast so watch out (I liken it to a 'race car' guitar).
Reliability/Durability
:

This guitar is built sturdy, like a tank...think 'Matchless' when it comes to being reliable....even though the bridge is not 'floating' always have a back-up though, the tone limitations alone will nece ssitate having another guitar along anyway...

My over-all rating is high because the guitar is built for the Eddie Van Halen thing and it does this superb indeed! it is not a '10' because of the disparity between the pick-ups, even Eddie Van Halen will have difficulty messing with the tone knob while playing this thing...

This EVH wolfgang is a 1997 model, in the U.S., solid basswood body, and birdseye maple neck. It has a thin neck that is unfifnished and oiled, very good for fast styles. It has a vintage gold finish that is pretty durable and beutiful. 22 frets I think. There is only one knob on this axe, a volume knob. It has a Floyd Rose bridge with a factory installed D-tuna (very nifty!).

This is a 1999 model which was made in the United States. It has 22 frets. Im pretty sure its an arch top model but Im not sure (Im not very good with details). The controls it has are 1 Volume knob, 1 Tone knob, and a 3 way pickup selector. It has 2 Humbucker pickups and the bridge pickup is a custom EMG-81. It was like this when I bought it and I'm thinking of replacing the neck pickup with an EMG-60. It's a bit too harsh sounding on some models of my PODXT. The 60 should calm this down. The EMG-81 pickup is active but lasts for 3,000 hours. I've had the guitar for almost 20 months and haven't replaced the battery. There's a 9V battery in my case just in case it dies, though. The neck is made out of Birdseye Maple with TONS of birdseye in it. It's color is Vintage Gold and its really nice. It came with a scratch on the front and I dropped a screwdriver on it and made another. The version I have has a Licensed Floyd Rose in the bridge. It was nothing but trouble for a few months. Don't plan on using the D-Tuna and your guitar staying in tune. I finally ended up blocking the bridge and this fixed it. Tuners are locking, the brand is Schaller. The accessories it came with when I purcahsed it were: Hard case, 7 allen wrenchs, Whammy Bar, and the original pickup. Couldn't ask for anything more...
Sound
:
9
This guitar perfectly fits my music styles. I play mainly hard rock (think Metallica). I also play the acoustic songs like Nothing Else Matters, Mama Said, Fight Fire with Fire...etc. I play it through a PODXT going into a Marshall AVT20. You have to mess with the amp controls to equalize the POD. It can get pretty noisy on the hi-gain models. You have to turn down the volume to make it stop clipping and to get less gain. I think the guitar is capable of pretty much any sound, you just have to really search to find the tone...Well, for me at least.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

When I got the guitar, I bet the action was perfect. I just messed with it so much that I really screwed it up. I've adjusted the intonation about 3 times. I dont know how you adjust pickups, so I cant comment on that. There weren't any flaws when I bought it.

This guitar is well built. The hardware seems like it'll last forever. The finish isn't very good, the paint chipped about an inch out of the side and I had to tape it to make it stop. The strap buttons can sometimes get loose, but not too bad.

I've dealt with customer support on their forums and they were extremely helpful and friendly. I took it to Mammoth music to get the bridge blocked, but they did a horrible job. Right after I changed the strings it was back to normal. It didnt have a warranty when I bought it.

I've been playing for a long time and own a few guitars. A Marshall AVT20, and a PODXT. Before I bought this, I wish I would have asked how to block the bridge. Thats been the biggest problem. I never compared it to other guitars because I dont need to. Its a fine guitar.

After reading all the reviews, my Wolf seems to be somewhat different than most others. It was born in 1999, highly flamed green arch top(put my green PRS 10 top to shame). The tuners are gold Sperzals w/oval pearl tuner knobs. The volume and tone knobs, bridge(hard tail)and 3-way is also gold. The neck is maple w/highly figured birdseye. Simply beautiful. The body edges are purfled out in a pearl trim also. Maybe someone got a little crazy at Peavy and thought they would slip this in, absolute Custom Shop quality. The twin humbuckers are mounted directly in wood. Sustain's like my L.P. Custom. Doesn't need nor has many features, just looks great and rocks like a mother.

With the coil tap, it suits my purposes perfectly. I play in a rock cover band that stretches from heavy Rage stuff to Dave Matthews Band and Van Morrison. The coil tap has made the guitar more than just a 'hard-rock/metal' guitar, which it otherwise would be. I run it through an old Marshall 9000 series tube power amp with JMP1 preamp and Boss GX-700 effects coupled with a 1960A 4 X 12 cab. I could probably play an entire gig with just this guitar although I usually play most of the clean stuff with a US standard strat - the Wolfgang is not quite there in terms of what I like for a clean sound (although the middle position with the coil tap does get pretty close to a tele/stratty sort of sound).
Pickups are very hot and I have a bit of trouble balancing the volume with my other guitars (US Strat and Ibanez RG 550 with Dimarzio pickups) but a bit of tweaking with the master volume on the JMP1 is all that is required.

I bought mine in the US and had it carted back to Australia. It played perfectly straight out of the case. I have since had a bit of work done on the neck and general set up but only due to inevitable wear the guitar is receiving (I gig at least once a week - sometimes twice and rehearse once a week). Action was originally very low, a bit too low in fact for me, but it is now playing superbly.

The Wolf has been my main gig guitar for the last 3 years - no serious problems. The harware is good, although the plastic tuning pegs and tone and volume knobs are a bit cheap (I replaced mine with chrome knobs - look much better in my view). Also, the push pull coil tap on the dimarzio is much smoother than the original pot (I put it on the tone - will probably replace the volume with a dimarzio pot in the near future as well).
I replaced the strap buttons to use strap locks and haven't had a problem - much safer and more reliable after a couple of close calls with the guitar falling from the strap.
I would never gig without a backup guitar (string breakage) but other than the occasional broken string the guitar has never let me down.

I've been playing abot 15 years - own a Mesa DC3, Martin 12 string, Yairi WY1BK, Taylor 314ce L2, 1989 US Strat and 1990 Ibanez RG 550.
I knew what I was getting into when I bought the guitar - wanted a sound that was a cross between a Les Paul and a Strat and this is pretty close in my view without going the PRS route. The coil tap has made the guitar more versatile and useable for more than heavy rock.
The d-tuna is fantastic and the best feature - essential for playing Rage and other drop D rock numbers like Place Your Hands and eliminates the need for me to lug around an extra guitar tuned to drop D. Doesn't hold the intonation perfectly though, but this doesn't phase me on stage.
If I lost it I would buy another in a second - although getting them out here in Australia is not the easiest thing (very expensive too).
I compared to PRS before I bought but this was a better 'rock' guitar in my view and a lot less expensive. I actually bought mine sight unseen over the phone and was happy with the service and the result.
Anyone who is concerned about ending up with a 'one trick pony' in buying one of these should explore getting the coil tap - it unlocks a huge range of clean and crunchy tones that would otherwise be unobtainable and makes the guitar very versatile.

This is the export( cheaper) version of the EVH Wolfgang, but it has some of the same features as its older brother. The EVH Export is made in Korea! Yeah I know what you're thinking, but we'll get to that later. The EVH Export has the same EVH designed pick-ups as the Wolfgang. The Floyd Rose bridge seems to be made from casted metal, rather than a machined bridge like on its older brother. The D-Tuna, Floyd Rose locking nut, Grover tuning machines, without the pearl key heads and quilted maple top and Faux(?)binding are all standard. I bought the Amber Quilted Maple Top Model. You can also get the Export in Tobbaco Sunburst, Transparent Blue, or Transparent Crimson Red. The Export only comes with a 25 1/2" maple neck, but its not Graphite re-enforced, and no figured neck options. Just straight maple, with some nice figure, but definitely not Birdseye. The frets are tall, and come to a point, kinda. The feel of the neck is very much like a well worn, often played neck. It is very comfortable, even for big hands like mine. Bending strings are a joy on this baby! The pick-up selector is a Les Paul type, but reversed. Up position is Bridge Pick-up, Down position is Neck Pick-up, Middle Position is Both Pick-ups. One volume control is all that is given. The Export also came with a hardshell case. I've had this guitar for over a year, so the "Honeymoon is Over" as some of you guys say.
Sound
:

Well, here is where it all matters! The tone is everything, and this little baby has it in spades! The pick-ups weren't set up to my liking, so I adjusted the pole pieces, as well as the height. Yes, the height of the pick-ups can be adjusted on either of these(EVH Export, or EVH Wolfgang USA) guitars, contrary to what you may have read in other reviews here. The screws are drilled into the body, but there are still springs between the body and the pick-up mounting bracket! So adjusting them was no problem. The tone of this guitar comes through no matter what I'm playing. Blues, Rock, Metal, yeah its in there. The pick-ups themselves have a very warm sound, and playing the guitar un-plugged it has a almost an acoustic volume. You can actually hear the tone of this guitar, even when your playing it un-plugged! The volume control on this guitar does alot more than control that. Back the volume off , with the neck pick-up on, instant SRV. Leave it wide open, instant Clapton(Cream). I'm still amazed by the way the volume control works in conjunction with the pick-ups. I play through a Tech-21 Trademark 60 with a 4x12 celestion cab, Boss V-wah, BBE Sonic Maximizer, and a Rocktron Tsunami Chorus. I also have a Mesa Boggie Studio Pre-amp going through a Mesa boogie 50/50 power amp. In both set-ups the tone is nothing short of fantastic. The sustain of the guitar is wonderful, the guitar almost seems alive when I'm playing it. The pick-ups are quiet, and the only time that I expierenced any hum was when I was playing near my TV, while it was on. Once I turned it off, the hum was gone. No problems with the sound, if you take the time to PLAY the guitar, you'll find that any tone is possible.

Well the Factory set-up wasn't to my liking. That's normal, though. I've never bought any guitar that had been set-up for me, right out of the box. The pick-ups had to be properly adjusted for my liking(see above)and the action was a little on the high side. The routing for the Floyd is very clean, as is the pick-up routing/installation. All of the electronic work is very well done, and very neat/clean. The fret work is first rate. All of the frets were highly polished and the sides were smooth and even. None of them come over the edge of the fret board. The Quilted maple top is finished beautifully and even. The oil finished neck is a wonder, and feels like it was designed for my hand! The D-tuna, well thats another story. This is where I had problems. Unfortunately, the EVH Export didn't come with any instructions for properly setting the D-tuna up(incidentally, the EVH Export didn't come with any instructions at all). This was very frustrating, especially when I changed to a heavier guage string. The D-Tuna needs to be adjusted for different string guages, and I finally found(just last week) the D-Tuna Site to do this correctly. Before this, the D-Tuna was basically useless. This is my biggest complaint, and I have called and spoke to the people at Peavey about this oversite. Still, although this was a problem, I'm not going to let it affect the rating too much.

Everything about this guitar reeks of quality, the fact that its made in Korea not withstanding. The EVH Export is a great, solidly built guitar, that will last forever, if properly taken care of. After over a year of playing gigs, and rehersals, the finish does show some wear, in the area between the pick-ups just below the high E string. There were light scratch marks from my pick, or hands constantly rubbing that area. This is after more than 150 gigs, 3-5 sets a night! Not to mention rehersals 2-3 times a week! So I'll say that the finish is very durable. I went out and bought some rubbing compound and Presto! The scratches are gone, and the guitar looks brand new! I've been using this guitar as my primary, with no back-up. The risk of taking out my Cherry Sunburst or Ebony Les Paul Custom, or my Custom Shop Strat, is to high. These are still my favorite guitars, but the EVH Export can run with all 3 of them, and it has some advantages(Floyd Rose, D-Tuna) that they don't. The strap buttons are very solid, and I've not had a problem with them as of yet.

The EVH Export has a 1 year warranty. I never had to use it, and I haven't had any problems with the EVH Export. When I called about the D-Tuna/instructions for the EVH Export, they sent me a set for the EVH Wolfgang USA. I didn't need them, as I had already found out how to set-up the D-tuna, but its nice to know that the people at Peavey do listen. The Guy that I talked to was very friendly.

I've been playing for over 20 years. I teach guitar instruction for a living, and perform product testing for local music stores. I was asked to test this guitar for a local music store and give my honest opinion. I fell in love with it after 2 weeks of testing, and bought it. I believe that Export sounds as good as, if not better than my Les Paul Customs, and my Custom Shop Strat. Its almost like the best of the Strat and Les Pauls combined into one guitar. If this guitar was stolen or lost, I'd go out and buy another without hesitation. The tone and the neck, the comfort of the body and the Floyd and the D-Tuna... whats not to like? If I had to pick one thing that I love the most about the Export, it would be the tone. My favorite feature is the neck shape. Its just soooo comfortable. I really can't say that I'd change anything about this Guitar, there is nothing to hate.

This guitar is much more versital than most people tend to believe. I play in both a cover band and an original band. The cover band covers everything from Metallica to Mana and everything in between. This guitar sounds great on all of them. The original band is a agrresive alternative metal kind of thing and I always cut through the mix with this guitar. I run the guitar through a couple of effects or just straight through my Mesa Triple Rectifier into a 4 X 12 Mesa cab. The sound is huge! Properly EQed this guitar does clean up nicely contrary to many postings here. Even with a high gain amp this guitar is extremely quiet.

The fit and finish on this guitar are pretty impressive. Lets face it we all frowned when we found out EVH had gone to peavey, but if you are serious about playing guitar you owe it to yourself to check a USA wolfgang out. It will not dissapoint you. It is pretty much perfect in every way I couldn't find anything wrong with it, and trust me I was looking for peavey's flaws.

I have been playing guitar for 15 years, ten of those years proffesionally. I am not an overprivilaged child who bought this as my first guitar and am just learning how to play. I gigged my butt off to be able to afford this guitar. I do spend all of my money on gear though. This guitar is very different from the major guitar brands, mainly because of the neck. The neck on this guitar is unreal, it has to be played to be believed! This guitar did take some getting used to, at first I felt like I couldn't play it, something was different about the way your forearm rests on the body, but once I grew accustomed to it there was no going back! This guitar gets compared to all of the big names for one reason, because it can hang with all of the other overpriced brands. I have the luxury of currently owning a PRS standard 24 a Custom shop Les Paul and an Ibanez JS 1000. I love all of these guitars each one is special in its own right, But I now know that a guitar doesn't have to be super expensive to be good, I also learned that some guitars are just priced high because of their name. The Wolfgang can take these on any day. I play all of my guitars but keep going for the Wolfgang just because it sounds great and is a pleasure to play. IN the end it is all going to be up to personal preferance so just play an instrument that inspires you and makes you want to play! The wolfgang is that istrument for me.

Peavey EVH wolfgang, i mean, EVH, if it is good for Eddie (the greatest guitarist) it is good for me. Just bought it a few months ago, so its still a new experience for me. Before buying this guitar, I'd tried ibanez JS1000, Gibson Les pauls, Fender Strat, but I have to say that after 1 year of looking around I could decide that this is the perfect guitar for me. Great variety of tones (own the tone knob one, Floyd Rose). This guitar plays Jazz, Blues, Rock and Metal. Floyd Rose lying on the body and not floating really couldn't understand, but now I know the great sound and sustain this means (also a lot easier to change strings). Maple neck, very good looking, but very easy to get dirty too. Other features are just perfect, perfectly good frets, excellent mics. Excellent in appearence, i have a transparent amber flametop, and it looks so good I want to buy all the different colours just to see them...Also you can ajust the neck, angle it the way you like it, and last but not least, the D tuner, very useful for quick change of tuning of the 6th string...overall...Excellent features.

I love playing Van Halen, GN'R (n? 1 Slash fan), love 80s metal, and it suits too, I play a lot of AC/DC, Led Zepp, Purple and stuff, and it amazingly suits all types of music. I use mi wolfie through a crate and a fender deluxe 90, I'm now on the search for a marshall jubilee. This guitar is made for jamming at high volumes and distorted, some people say this guitar doesn't have good clean sound, but I've maxed my brother's Fender and it doesn't distort at all. I love the great variety of tones you can get. Switching the tone knob to 1 and the tone switch to deep and then the tone knob to 10 and switch to treble, is going from one extreme to the other. You have millions of tone choices in between...really great aspect of guitar. What i love the most about the sound is the high output and powerfull bass sounds it has...for me its a 10

I have this guitar since a few months, but i can't get my fingers off the fretboard. I just can't stop playing it, actually I'm even playing right now while I write the review. I own a Les paul imitation, it is not good, but I have played with a lot of other guitars that I don't own. If you want a screaming guitar this is a perfect choice, but if you like floating floyd rose this doesn't have one, though you CAN make it float, but I'm not taking the risk. This is the perfect mixture between a vintage Gibson Les Paul and a cutting edge Ibanez Jem. I love the Sweet sound and the screeming harmonics. I love the awesome playability, it swifts. I love the floyd rose. All other guitars can't get to half what this can play, it plays hard, loud, sweet, its excelent. I now have the "good guitar sindrome" since i can't stand playing a worse guitar than this one, and if i have to buy another guitar I would buy a Gibson Les Paul , and a Ibanez Jem so I can have all the sounds I can have. But this one just sums them all up. If you are thinking of buying a wolfgang , i can't understand why you are even thinking, JUST BUY IT, it woun't let you down....remember buy a arched, tone knob and floyd rose, just like mine...it is 10 points guitar.

I play classic rock, blues and some country. I use two tube marshalls with a chorus and delay. Ahhh the sound. So rich and full with fat and warm tones that are soothing to any ear. You don't need to crank the distortion on the amp with these pick ups. Just a mild distortion setting and they really sing with remarkable sustain. The clarity is amazing, it just feels like quality. The bridge p/u is outstanding, no thin sounding tin can on this one. The neck is clear and bluesy with no mud and reminds me of a Gibson SG neck sound but more clarity. I could not be more satisfied. The guitar is very versatile and you could create your own signature sound easily. The VH sound is legendary to me but the guitar does that and then some.

2002 Purple flametop w/Floyd Rose and ROSEWOOD fretboard. Mine is the first Wolfgang I have seen with the rosewood fretboard, and I ordered mine that way for two reasons. 1) I think rosewood sounds a little warmer than the maple and 2) Anyone who's played a maple neck knows that they show dirt in a short amount of time. Impressive to me was the inclusion of custom case, beautiful owners manual, all hardware, and a signed certificate with the initials of everyone who had setup and quality checked the guitar. Fabulous!! I give my "9" rating, because the pickups are non-adjustable, and bolted directly to the body.

I mainly play hard rock, this thing seems well suited for my style. I play mine through my PODxt, and it sounds great. One thing I noticed, is that is has tons of punchy mids. I had to re-EQ my previous settings on all of my patches to make it go away. The bridge pickup seems pretty hot, and I found myself using the volume knob on the guitar to clean it up a little. I'm a confirmed gain freak, but on 10 it seems like overkill to me. If I roll the volume to about 7 it's just right. This guitar has the best sustain and harmonics of any axe I've ever owned.

I must confess, I wasn't a big fan of the body style at first. When shopping at my local music store I decided to pull one off the rack to try it out. This is, without a doubt, the best playing guitar I've ever touched! The action was perfect for me, which is really low, but not so low that you can't dig into the string just a little bit. The guitar was IN TUNE out of the box. For some reason, the guitar seems to have less tension than any other guitar I've played, which is strange because it has a standard 25.5" scale. There were no buzzing frets at all. The bridge was setup well, and a surprising feature I find myself using more and more is the D-tuna. I had owned another axe with one, but when dropping down to D, it was always out of tune. Not so with the Wolfgang! The finish was flawless, including the thick binding around the body. The neck feels like it was custom made for my hand. It's nice and narrow, and thick. Very, very impressed with the quality of my Wolfgang! My only minor complaint is the inability to adjust the pickups. Don't get me wrong, mine was perfect for me from the factory, but had I wanted to raise or lower them a little, I'd be out of luck. You CAN raise the pickups a little with shims, but it's a lot of work. I understand that the direct pickup mounting was actually designed that way on purpose to deliver a purer tone, but I'm a little picky and like to tweak. One last note, I have noticed that my pickups were not exactly centered. The high E string was about 1/8" of an inch away from the pole piece of the bridge pickup. What's odd, is that the other strings are relatively centered under the poles for the rest of the strings? I've looked at it for hours and can't figure out how it's possible. Anyway, overall it was well setup from the factory.

Built like a tank! I was really contemplating a Music Man Axis, but I like the idea of the graphite reinforced joint the Wolfgang has. Since the Floyd Rose is not floating, I have much more confidence in my tremelo than ever before. The finish is a polyester auto style clear coat, so it's much more durable than the nitrocellulose the Les Pauls have, and won't wear off from playing. Very sturdy feel.

I've been playing for 18 years now. I really wish I had given the Wolfgang a chance sooner. I have to say, I really could care less if Eddie's name is on my axe. It had nothing to do with my purchase. In fact, I've never ever been a Peavey fan before now. Most recently, I've been bored and uninspired with playing. I bought a Jackson Soloist SL-1 (My dream guitar) less than a month ago, and was thoroughlly disappointed. It was a nightmare to play, and the quality was really poor. I took it back to the store, and decided to re-group and take my time with my next purchase. Up until recently, I had my heart set on a Gibson Les Paul, but I hated the finished neck, and really had a hard time justifying the outrageously high price for a piece of lumber. All of the Les Pauls the store had were riddled with poor workmanship. In fact, they had a $3000 custom that had binding that looked like it was installed by a monkey. The tops on most of them were barely figured, and the finishes were very inconsistent when looking at models with the same color. The Wolfgang, for me, was a great choice. It had the archtop I wanted, but was different enough for me to feel like I'm not following the crowd. First and foremost, it's unquestionably the best playing guitar for me, and that's the most important thing of all. My only minor quibbles I have with this guitar, is the non-adjustable pickups, and the reversal of the pickup selector. It seems unnatural to move it up for the bridge, however I spent less than 10 minutes and rotated it around, so life is good. Personal taste in an axe is totally unique, but if anyone's interested in a great playing, and high quality guitar, give the Wolfgang a try.

I have the arch top standard made in USA blue flametop guitar with Floyd Rose and D-tuna. Basswood back, maple top. The neck and overall feel of the guitar is great. Very comfortable.

This guitar is made for rocking. Great overdriven sound. Great sustain. I play into a Boogie Calibre .50, and have played the guitar through other amps (Marshall JMP-1, Line 6 Spider, Boogie MK IV), it sounds great through any of them. The guitar is super quiet, no hum. (My other guitar is a Tele and the hum is annoying, especially when hard disk recording). If you are going to be playing a lot of clean guitar you are better off with something else, but if you are going to play down and dirty, classic rock, hard rock, etc, this is your baby!
The pickups have a real high output. I find that when playing 5 and six note chords, the heavier guage strings tend to cut through more than the thinner strings. I probably need to adjust the pickups a bit.

I bought the guitar used, but in mint condition. The look and feel of the guitar is awesome. The guy had a very thin guage of strings on it (probably .008's), and the trem was just about floating. When I put .009's on it, the trem was full on floating, making the D-tuna useless. So I adjusted the springs in back and fine tuned the d-tuna per the instruction manual and it works great. There are no visible flaws to this guitar. At least not to my eye.

Durability will not be a problem. I wouldn't gig without a backup because string changing with the Floyd Rose takes too long. A little nit picky thing I noticed is that the headstock is so small that when changing strings, after threading the string through the locking nut it is sometimes hard to get my hand in there to grab the little end of the string. I wouldn't want to be trying a string change under the gun...it can take a while.

I was looking for a good rock guitar with two quiet humbucker pickups to compliment my Strat and Tele. I play rack and blues. I'll stick with the other two guitars for the blues...and clean stuff. Distorted guitar and leads? Wolfie all the way. I've been playing for 20 years.
Amazingly I had to search hard for a guitar that I liked in my price range (about $1000, and I live in the SF Bay area, with lots of music stores. I could have found a great axe for 2000-3000 bucks, but there was little on the shelves in my price range besides Ibanez & Jackson shred type guitars. Very cool guitars, but not what I wanted. I ended up finding this one on Ebay from a local seller. I tried it out and it felt better and looked better than the other 3 wolfgangs I played in music shops (two of them specials).
The coolest feature is the neck. It feels wonderful to me. As far as the toggle switch being in the way like others have mentioned, I have not found it to be a problem. I think you need to have alligator arms to accidentally flip the switch while double tapping.

The sound out of this thing makes my shitty little Gorilla practice amp rock!! I tried this guitar out at the store- they happened to have both the Fender Hotrod DeVille and the Marshall JCM 900 I have- lets just say that I walked into the store without wanting to buy this guitar, despite the fact that I have wanted one now for the last 2 years. I tried it out and WOW?thick full tone, nice balanced pickups!! I NEVER use the neck pickup for anything, but I do now! Both amps sounded great- both clean and dirty. Nice job on the design of the pickups!

The neck plays better than any neck I have played- even when I would ?test drive? similar models of this guitar, the neck felt good, but not enough for me to slap down the cash. For some reason this guitar was majical for me. It fit right, played right, sounded right. The finish and the action are PERFECT- even for a used guitar! The D-Tuna is a little on the tight side however?no biggie, but that is the only thing that is off on this guitar (an it is a very minor thing for me).

Peavey built this thing SOLID. I would have no problem gigging with this guitar with no backup. Stays in tune NO PROBLEM!

Ok, Peavey is my new favorite company. The guitar came with the case and THAT?S IT. I had contacted Peavey about getting aneck for a Wolfgang Special body I had aquired; they don?t sell any of the parts unless you are registered with Peavey, BUT they were going to make an exception in my case. Long story short, the neck was going to be the price of a Special (used). I declined and they sent me neck bolts at no charge (as I was going to buy a neck from Warmoth). A few days later (after I had put the guitar on layaway) I dropped them a line with a question about registering the guitar with them; although they could not register me as a Peavey Wolfgang owner (Have to buy new for that), they would instead send me everything else AT NO CHARGE (strap included). Despite not being registered with them as an owner, they did go the extra mile in my eyes?most guitar makers wouldn?t and in fact would be real dicks about it (FENDER?GRETSCH!!). Great company, VERY customer focused! I am even going to purchase a Wolfgang Special at the end of the year because of their customer focus!!

If I could rate this guitar high than 10 I would!! I have had SEVERAL guitars over the last 5 years I have been playing- Fenders, Gibson, DeArmond, Warmoth?non come close to the playabilty and quality as this guitar does. EVH?s involvment with this product aside, it is a solid machine, built RIGHT, designed RIGHT, plays RIGH, and sold by a company that does seem to care about its customers. I am VERY happy with my purchase and intend on purchasing another Wolfgang soon. This guitar is not a mere one trick pony either; I play not only rock, but a little rockabilly/psychobilly and punk as well. I can get a vairied array of tones, clean and dirty. Hands down the best guitar I have ever owned.

1999 Wolfgang Standard...oil finished birdseye maple neck, basswood body, 2 EVH humbucking pickups, 22 frets, arched top and neck, 3 way pickup selector, volume and tone controls, Floyd Rose licensed tremolo with drop-d tuner. It doesn't have a ton of features and gimmicks, but it does have pretty much everything I need. The D-tuner is a brilliant invention, and the guitar stays in tune with no problems when using it.

I play mostly cover songs, spanning a variety of rock styles. AC/DC, The Clash, Alice In Chains, The Marvelous 3, Lit, Motley Crue...stuff like that, and this guitar can do it all with no problem. The Wolfgang pickups are some of the best I've ever heard, much better than the stock pickups you find on most guitars. Some people complain that the pickups don't clean up very well, so I will offer two suggestions to correct this. Either roll off of the guitar volume a bit, or have the pickups coil tapped. I had both pickups on mine tapped, and it plays nice and clean in single coil mode.

:

Since I bought mine used, I have no idea as to how well it was set up when it left the factory, although I've heard that the factory setups from Peavey are pretty good. The action, fit, and finish are excellent. The neck is what sold me on this guitar. I love the feeling of the oil finished neck, it practically plays itself. My only complaint about this guitar, and it's minor one, is that the bridge pickup seems to be set a little bit too low at the factory. I raised mine a little bit, and now it sounds much better.

I don't see any reason why this guitar would have reliability or durability problems. Gigging without a backup is never a good idea, no matter what guitar you use, but if I had to, I'd want to be playing my Wolfgang.

Peavey's customer support is some of the best I've ever experienced from any company. The forums on the Peavey web site are excellent, and they have customer service reps who answer questions posted on the forum. And it's not one of those deals where a rep glances at the forum every couple weeks, Peavey's reps post answers to questions on a daily basis. When I first got my Wolfgang, I called about ordering the set of tools that came with it. They knew exactly what I needed, and they shipped it out right away. When I wanted to coil tap the pickups, I called and left a message for a Peavey guitar tech, even though I doubted that I'd ever get a call back. 15 minutes later, Steve from Peavey customer service called back, and was very helpful in answering my questions.

hI looked at Les Paul's, Strats, and a PRS McCarty before buying this, and I'm glad I chose the Wolfgang. I almost went with a PRS, but in the end, I liked both guitars equally, and so I couldn't justify paying three times as much for a PRS, when I wasn't getting three times as much guitar. I've been playing for a year, and I feel that the reason I've made such good progress in learning to play guitar is because I had a quality guitar to learn with. It just felt so comfortable from the moment I first picked it up. If anyone is looking into buying a Wolfgang, feel free to email me, I'd be happy to tell you anything else you'd like to know about it.

My model features a tiger-striped arched maple top, finished in Amber, with a birdseye maple neck. The body is Basswood. In keeping the the idea that this is Eddie's idea of a marriage between a Les Paul body and a Strat shape, then maybe the body should be made of mahogany. I know of no basswood Strats or Les Pauls.
The much touted custom Van Halen pickups are not to my liking. Alledgedly Eddie did not like the sound he got when using off-the-shelf pickups in a bridge/neck configuration. I think the neck pickup in the Wolfgang absolutely sucks. Instead of the neck pickup being warm and sweet (i.e. a Paul Reed Smith or Les Paul) it sounds muffled. Van Halen describes it as "like butter". I say it's Almost like you want to turn the tone knob up some more, but it's cranked. The bridge pickup isn't much better. Someone commented that these are NOT clean pickups, and that is definetly true. Not the sparkling traditional humbucking clean you'd expect. Kinda like the first 5150 was not designed clean tones in mind so they gave us the 5150 II.
I do like the compound radius neck, and the 6105 fret size. As someone also mentioned, the threaded tremolo arm is a poor design. We are in 2002 and you'd think they'd engineer this better. The Floyd Rose is still the best in this category. It allows you to adjust the angle of the arm in a fixed position as opposed to letting the bar either be to tight or too loose. Eddie has even commented that when people played his guitars, they thought the arm was broken because it was so loose. He keeps his spring tension incredibly stiff as well. Loose bar, stiff springs...go figure!
Sound
:
No Opinion
I've played it through my Marshall 100 watt TSL head, as well as my Crate Blue Voodoo 120 watt head. It works better with the Blue Voodoo which shouldn't suprise anybody. The Blue Voodoo is essentially a rip-off of a Soldano, which is same platform that the 5150 sprang from. It sounds okay, but nothing to write home about. Again, I think the combination of muffled pickups and the basswood body are the main culprits.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
No Opinion
If you like Eddie's setup for instance, strings installed with the ball-end on the tuning keys, blocked tremolo, very stiff spring tension, loose whammy bar arm, non adjustable pickup height, etc., then this setup is for you.
The finish and workmanship were beautiful, but at $2000.00 it's what you'd expect. The only strange thing is that the heel of the neck overlaps where it joins the body.

As far as reliability, I was really impressed with the electronics. I always can tell the quality of a guitar by how smooth the volume and tone controls roll the sound up and down. I want very fine granularity, and not a sudden change. Like a light switch dimmer. Very few guitars come with top notch switches and controls anymore, and this one does.

The damn guitar just sounds friggin great. I have a Special and a standard, and the standard just rings when you play it. The arch top definately makes a difference to my ears. If you try to get a clean sound with it, it does not do that very well. However, it was not designed for a clean sound so I can't in good conscience fault the instrument for that. As far a rock sounds go, these pickups have got some serious BALLS for passive pickups. You won't be disappointed when you crank up the gain.

Wolfgang Standard deluxe 97 - 2001 Quilt top to Flame Tops. I have them all. You know the story on this guitar. I prefer the stop tail model for several reasons. It seems to have a little better sustain, is much easier to change the strings on and personally I think it looks better. Oh and I have little user for the Floyd Royse since I have never mastered the Whammy bar. This guitar has every feature I want and need.

I can't say enough about this guitar. I started playing a Les Paul out of high school 25 years ago. That was my guitar for many years. I still have it but I never play it because I just always go back to the Wolfgangs. I love the way they sound and I love the way they feel. It just feels so comfortable. I have hot rod Fender Strat that I use to play as well. I hardly ever pull that out either. I would be embarrassed to tell you how many Wolfgang's I have!
I have a 5150 combo but I don't use it much because to be honest I just can't get use to it. I had been playing through a Marshall JCM 2000 Triple Super Lead and really liked it but I just had to get the 5150 with so many Wolfgangs. I find my self sticking with the Marshall. I use various effects pedals and combo units. Some of it I need to spend more time figuring out how to get what I really want out of it.

To me these guitars are art. That is why I own so many of them. I display them. They just hit me right. I have already placed some orders!

Overall they are very good, but I have had a few problems. Of course I wouldn't expect them all to be perfect. The biggest problem has been with the input connection getting loose. I have also noticed that based on the climate that I am in that some of the fret edges get a little sharper than I would like them to. There is quite a bit of difference in the feel of the necks from one Wolfgang to the next. It also has a lot to do with how they are oiled, if they are.

I have been playing for 25 years with a long dry spell in there. I own a Les Paul Custom and Fender Texas special Fat Strat along with a whole bunch of Wolfgang's. I have 6 Quilt Tops plus a bunch of flame tops. These guitars are art to me along with being the most comfortable guitar I have ever played. I keep them all displayed and I find it hard to walk by them without picking one up to play. I will say that I am not the ulimate guitar player. If I had the natural talent I wouldn't have a real job. However, this guitar inspires me to play and I have a lot of fun and get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I really like a lot of the new music (Offspring, Fuel, Godsmack, Staind, Creed, Tool, etc.) along with VH and the rock and metal bands of the 70's and 80's. The guitar is perfect for my taste. It is very versitile. I am still hoping to increase my skill level to the point at which I can do the guitar justice!

THIS IS A EVH ARCHTOP IN A TOBACCO SUNBURST FLAME TOP W/ FLOYD ROSE TREM. IT WAS MADE IN 98' SER.#91000675 OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THE NECK HAS ALOT OF BIRDSEYE AND LOOKS GREAT. IT COMES W/6105 DUNLOP FRET WIRE, VOLUME AND TONE KNOBS, 2 EVH HUMBUCKERS, 22 FRETS, CASE ETC.

THIS IS NOT A STRICTLY ROCKERS GUITAR. IT PLAYS FAST W/ THE SMALL NECK AND THE PICK-UPS GIVE YOU A WIDE RANGE OF TONES DEPENDING ON WHAT AMP YOU PLAY OUT, MUSIC STYLE ETC. I RUN IT THRU A SLO-100, EVENTIDE HARMONIZER H-3000 DSE, CARVIN POWER AMP, THD-HOT PLATE, A WET-DRY-WET SET-UP W/ 3 CABS BASICALLY AND I CAN GET ANY SOUND I WANT. THE FLOYD ROSE ON THIS GUITAR IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE GOTOH TREM ON THE MUSIC MAN. IT IS LIGHTER WEIGHT AND DOES NOT "FEEL" AS GOOD. ITS A VIBE I GUESS BUT THE QUALITY IS NOT AS GOOD ON THE FLOYD UNIT.

BOTTOM LINE IS IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THIS GUITAR THE WAY YOUR SUPPOSED TO, IT WILL LAST FOREVER. KEEP THE NECK CLEAN, CHANGE STRINGS, BASICALLY READ THE MAUNUAL!!! THE TRUSS ROD IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND IT PLAYS FAST W/THE MAPLE NECK. THE FLAME MAPLE TOP IS NICE AND THE FINISH IS GOOD AND DURABLE TO NICKS AND BUMPS. THE NECK IS WIDER AT THE NUT AND IT IS A LITTLE HARD TO HIT THE HIGHER FRETS FOR SOLOING BUT HAS A NICE FEEL WHEN PLAYING CHORDS.

Other reviewers have pretty much covered the features...scroll on down!
My particular model is a black EVH wolf with D-tuner and figured top; I've had it for 3 years now (the honeymoon is long over).
I guess I'd give it a high rating in the features department...mainly because of the D-tuner. I don't use it that often, but it is probably the coolest feature to appear on guitars in the past 15 years.
Other than that, it doesn't have tons of options with the pickups (coil splits, phase switches, etc...), but I don't really need all that. The tone knob is kinda useless though, and I'm thinking of bypassing it, and wiring the tone control up as a volume for the neck pickup (to be able to do the ol Les Paul style bridge to neck mute switch trick).
The peavey/Floyd rose licensed bridge is among the best I've played in terms of staying in tune (I've tried genuine floyds, jacksons, Kahlers, etc...). The arm itself is a thread in type, and is either too tight (gets in the way) or too loose (whirls around and makes noise). Generally, I play without the arm installed, and just grab the back of the bridge and pull forward when I need trem...works for me, and no stupid arm getting in the way.

I play alterna-pop radiohead, U2 style...through a Mesa MkIII (not for much longer), POD, and Fender Vibrolux. FX are: korg A3, TC2290, Vox wah
Honestly, I bought the guitar based on fit and feel of the neck alone...I barely tried it plugged it, figuring that I could always swap the pickups out. Well, when I did plug in, I was pleasantly surprised. This guitar seems to have the right balance between lows and highs on the bridge pickup, and the neck pickup has a nice silky sound. I haven't felt the need to change out the pickups at all.
This guitar is great for solid rock sounds. In the studio I also like to use a tele (for single coil brightness), and Gretsch (for arch top body and ring). Hey, no one guitar does it all....
Oh, the pickups seem to be rather high output; something thats quite noticeable when playing using the POD. Sometimes you get a nasty digital clip on the hard struck notes. Of course this is the POD's problem, not the Wolfgang's.

This is the best part of the guitar...I don't know how exactly, but it just feels like 'home'. When I bought my wolfgang I tried just about every guitar in the store, and I couldn't believe how natural the wolfgang felt in my hands. The neck is incredible!
Now, to pick nits...there are two visible creases in the body where it has been glued together. The top routing of the trem looks good, but on the backside it's quite rough (as it is on most guitars).
Setup was great even just off the wall...though I tore the strings off as soon as I got home. .09's are just too light. I've get .10's on it now, and it seems to be begging for .11's; it's that easy to play!
Reliability/Durability
:
7
The guitar itself is tough as hell...the neck body joint is good and solid. I really like the short headstock as it doesn't seem to bash into as many things as a long headstock does (you know, like door frames, FX racks, mixing consoles, etc...).
Mine's been dropped a few times, and seems no worse for wear. The body finish has received a couple of dents in it around the top horn(probably from the tip of the pick when slapping harmonics). Otherwise, the finish seems really resistant to scratching.
The pickup selector switch will likely soon need replacing, as it no longer feels smooth. When I put a new one in there I'll wire it up backwards (or rather normal les paul style), as it just seems wrong the way it's currently set up.
The nut for the jack continuously comes undone, and should have a lockwasher installed. Also, the strapbuttons keep popping out (despite the toothpicks and glue that I've shoved in there)...I guess that's part of the curse of having a light wood for the body.
Use it at a gig without a backup...yup, but its nice to have another guitar handy in case you break a string. The upside of a locking trem is that you don't break as many strings, but it takes forever to change them if you do.

But, here I am, and I really love this guitar. If it got stolen or lost (how exactly do you lose a guitar), I'd buy one again, but I'd probably go used or check out the Wolf special...my fingers seem to really connect with the neck.

I hate when people say this, but... everything about the guitar's features ahve been posted in earlier reviews. It has a beautiful purple flame on it, not one of the most beautiful that I've seen but it's gorgeous nonethe less. It came standard with the D-tuna. It's a little bit different than how it pushes and pulls compared to my EB MM Axis, but it does the job just as well.
It also has the tone knob that I believe Peavey wanted to put on the guitar to appeal to a wider audience. I could do without it as I do without it on my Axis. As Eddie says, roll your volume knob back to change your tone.

I play mosly rock(80's, modern, blues) and this guitar does the job pretty well. I am using it as a back up to my EB MM Axis with my Carvin Legacy combo and TC Electronic M-One processor and it sounds great. I have a setting on the M-One with a touch of chorus and a touch of delay. Can we say totally EVH tone!!!!!!!! Sounds just like my Axis

The guitar has great action and I can not find any flaws on it except that the neck is a tad rounder than the Axis near the body. In this case, I like the Axis more, but that's just my preference. Plus, the toggle switch is on top of the guitar instead of near the volume knob(like the Axis). I was playing a lead passage and I had to change positions, but nothing was there to flip. I guess I just have to get used to it.
The neck is small like my Axis and I love that. The neck has no finish on it so I can fly up and down on this with nothing to get in my way. Great job on the neck Peavey.
It has a great finish!!!!!!

The sound is un explainable, IT DOES EVERYTHING! I love every aspect of the sound, BUT, I do wish that they coil tapped the pickups. That would have been a cool addition.

One word *WOW* this guitar is beautiful, I think Peavey should get this custom shop thing on the road so I can see a BlueBurst or something like that, Their website does not do these guitars their justice, Check em out in a store! The factory setup was FLAWLESS! Pickups were adjusted, neck was straight, string height was awesome, No complaints with the setup at all. Okay, Now with finish, PERFECT except for one thing on the tuners, I don't know why but when I got it the chrome was flaking off, not a big deal, it played so good I didn't really get pissed, and I waited 6 months for the damn thing...Not a big deal though. OH YEAH, I especially love the unfinished neck. This guitar is So BAD ASS!

I've played this thing live many times, NO PROBLEMS. This guitar is very consistent, not one problem. The hardware, is fine its very precise "nice shit". Same with the finish! It's dent resistant (I think it is because I whacked some walls with it and: No dents) and it shines up REAL NICE. The guitar is the one and only, no back-up for this bad boy, I trust him to do his job. If he doesn't I'll bust him to bits. Just shittin' with ya ;o)

I'm 16 and I've been playing since 1998, so you do the math. I worked my ass off all summer of 2000 and used ALL MY EARNINGS ON THIS GUITAR, and some really cool picks, It was about $1,400 which isn't outrageous at all, If you want to know the picks were about 89 cents each. (Just kidding about the picks man, damn) I love the thing, If I was dumb enough to loose (how exactly do you LOOSE A FU!@#$ GUITAR?) it I'd buy another one. I did compare the Wolfgang to the EBMM, they both rocked but the Wolfgang was cheaper and it fit me better, it was new, and Eddie played one( ;O) ). So I put one on order. Seriously you should get one if you are at all considering a new guitar the ROCKS HARD. Hope this helps your choice, Have a good one! If you want more specific things Email me: VanHalenMan@aol.com

EVH Wolfgang Standard (2001). Anything but standard. Arch top "cherry sunburst" tiger maple flamed top. Drop-D Tuna.
From Peavey.com "Single cutaway, arched-top body is made from basswood with a select figured maple top for crisp attack and warm sustain. The stunning, single-piece birdseye maple neck features a 22 fret birdseye fingerboard cut from the same piece of wood as the neck to keep the color and grain patterns consistent."
It get an 8.5 as it's a pretty straight ahead rock geetar. No over the top inlays or foo foo wuss artsy add ons. Would give it a 10 if they gave it an original Floyd Rose.
Two Peavey humbucking pickups, custom-wound to Eddie's specifications, supply plenty of output with low-noise operation. A master volume, master tone and 3-way selector provide a wide variety of tonal possibilities.
Sound
:

9. Although it is a rocker geetar at heart it can give a decent variety of sounds. I play a little jazz/bossa nova and delta blues and it can do a good job at getting those sounds provided to have a versitile amp. Pretty good spectrum of sounds.

The neck the neck the neck. I was skeptical of Peavey's ability to really make a good playing guitar. But everywhere I went on business I would find a local shop and compare the Wolfies to the Music Man models. I won't get into the debate as to which on is better as they play so close its very difficult to tell. As playability was a dead heat I went for the one that looked best. My wolfie cherry sunburst won out. Any way, everywhere I went, Toronto, LA, Austin,Houston, Denver and London, all wolfies played great right off the rack! Peavey has done a great job with the action and the fit and finish. My guitar's action is the best for a mass produced guitar, only my custom 48th Street strat can compare. I have owned tons of high end electrics and played even more and the Wolfie can hang with the very very best. Not to mention it is very reasonably priced compared to current PRS or original San Dimas and ealier Jacksons.
Bottom line - the action fit and finish was as good as or better than any guitar I have pick up off a rack. But the volume knobs as cheap crap.

As i said above everywhere I traveled these kick butt so I want the cherry sunburst as it looked amazing. Everywhere I called here in Texas had a 3 to 6 month wait to I called ole reliable Manny's in New York City and they had one. I had it shipped down to me based on my experience trying the wolfies all over and the sales person's take on the action. I have NEVER bought a guitar through the mail so to speak as we all know they can be very different. Regardless, I was blown away beyond compare when the wolfie got to Texas and I picked it up. It was just incredible. I think Peavey has done a great job. Go try one and you'll see.
If it were stolen I would buy another one asap. Just wish it had an original floyd rose as I like the drop D tuner and better looking/made vol/tone knobs.

Purchased new in 1998. Made in U.S.A.. Very well applied trans red finish. Floyd licensed trem, volume and tone; and the nifty d-tuna. Another volume and no tone control would have been my preference.
Sound
:

Big, fat, bright. The sound continues to give me goosebumps. I play rock/metal and the wolfgang fits my style perfectly. The pickups are dead quiet at full volume - no hiss or weird squeals. However, they are extremely high output. When switching from my Jackson with Duncans it is necessary to re-adjust my amps settings as the wolfgang is much louder. I play around with the volume knob all the time and find its taper to be excellent - distorted sounds clean up nicely when backed off. I play through a monster cable -> morley wha -> boogie Mark IV.

The factory set-up was just what I wanted with nice , low action and a buzz free neck. I was particularly impressed with how well the nut was placed in the neck...the string height was ideal. The finish was well applied without flaws.

I've waited three years to write this review, specifically for this category. I clean the guitar after every practice, jam, or gig and have it set-up to factory specs twice a year - and the result is a guitar that will last a lifetime. With proper care and maintenance my guitar looks like it did at day one and sounds better than ever. The neck continues to get more comfortable and the sound more refined. The Wolfgang is very reliable, but I gig with a backup. Lead singers can wreak havoc with those mic stands.

I also own an EB/MM Steve Morse and Axis, a Jackson PC-1 and a Les Paul Studio and my hands always land on the Wolfgang first and stay there the longest. Extended playing times do not fatigue my hands or shoulders and the sound is intoxicating. I would buy another without hesitation. I only wish it had two volume controls and Ed would lose the tone knob. The Jackson plays second followed by the Axis, Morse and Les Paul. This Peavey is the real deal.

Made on May 1st, 2001. I know this because the little sheet inside says so, complete with all the checks that the techs do. Nothing else has changed from what has been said before, it has the same 22fret, birdseye maple neck (with an asymetrical back shape. It's slightly thicker below the low E than it is under the high E), custom humbuckers, one tone control, one volume control (apparently eddie didn't even want the tone control, and the Hartley Peavey told him he couldn't sell a guitar with no tone knob. Rumor has it Ed plays a Wolfgang Special instead of the real deal), blocked Floyd Rose trem (only lowers pitch), and an absolutly BEAUTIFUL dark cherry sunburst with no flaws. I think thats all the major items
The knobs bother me, they're simple plastic jobbies. Certainly Peavey could have gotten some nicer ones. I also wish it came with straplocks, but I already have some so its not that big a deal. But still...
It has almost all the tools I need for what I want. It deserves a 9
Sound
:

Does this suit my music style? Yes it does. The humbuckers are very nicely designed, meaning you can hear every single string in a chord. In a word, I'd call it 'articulate'. They sound great, not harsh or tinny, but just right. It has plenty of sustain, not quite like a LP, but, again, 'just right'.
I'll give this a 10, because it just sounds great
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
Action: Perfectly set up, no fret buzz, intonated better than I have EVER done, and the D-tuner stays in pitch. Even after some serious dive-bombing, the guitar stays in perfect tune.
Fit: This guitar is perfect in every way. The fretboard is a wider than my LP, so there's more room to play around with. The neck radius is also much higher (lower radius = more curve, higher = more flat), which I found to be *much* easier to play. Resting my palm on the trem is comfortable, and it doesn't tire my wrist out as much. There's plenty of room for upper-fret access, more so than the LP. I LOVE THE LIGHT WEIGHT! My LP was my first guitar, and playing something so light and comfortable is just awesome! I can finally manhandle this with ease.
Finish: Absolutly stunning cherry sunburst. Top notch.
It deserves a ten, and shall be scored as such by me. :)

I've been playing 5 years, and I own one other guitar, a Gibson LP. I'm currently playing through a homebrew amp (www.ax84.com), but have a Soldano HR 100+ in reserve at home. I also own a delay and wah, and thats about it.
I compared this guitar to a new Ibanez and the Ernie Ball Axis. The Ibanez had a great unfinished maple neck, but not the pickups I wanted, and the Axis doesn't have the arched top that this one does, which was one of my criteria in purchasing.
I love the looks and great playability of this guitar. I've never had a guitar nor spent much time on a guitar that has a trem. I'm looking forward to playing with this. The plastic knobs still bother me though...
If it were stolen, I'd certainly buy another. This guitar is so easy to play.

The sound is great. The pick-ups are hot and punchy. Unless I'm standing right next to my amp with it cranked, I can't say that I get any unwanted feedback. I play all kinds of music from Van Halen to STP, from Classic to Modern Rock. Yeah, so it's wired to get the VAN HALEN sound, but ya know what...it's all preference anyway right? Besides the guitar is just a small part of that Van Halen sound anyways. I use it with a Peavey Bandit 112 and a Special 212 with a 212 cab thru a Zoom GFX-8 pedal board and it sounds awesome. My bandmate has 2 Ibanez's and they really don't sound as good as the wolfgang does and he's comented on that himself. The sound is solid and it works for me. Just remember...it's all in what you like.

I'm very conscious about what it gets sat next too, who touches it and all that..I mean it's a beautiful guitar...I don't want it ruined. I still have the original strap buttons on it...no probs yet...the locking ones looked too big and gaudy to put on the wolfie.

Like I said I've been playing for about 8 years. I own another wolfie special that was painted like Ed's red and white striped axe. It doesn't have the original pickups in it, but I wanted a cheap 2nd the guitar. Like I said...the pickups aren't THAT special...throw in what you like...but they are great pickups. I wanted a 2nd guitar that would be reliable and had the same unfinished neck---that is by far the best feature of the guitar...that and the drop D and the trem system. I do dive bombs all day and never have to retune...my friends try to do that and they never get to play, cause all they're doing is re-tuning. I use it most often with the Zoom GFX(much better than the BOSS GT3) The only thing that bugs me is I have to clean it all the time from finger prints...hey it's my baby and I want it to look good...and if that's the price you pay for having a nice guitar...well that's pretty cheap. I use to have a Fender Squire II and a Lotus. The Fenders necks are to wide and after playing the Wolfgang...I'll never go back to a finished neck. Pick one up just for kicks...even a novice will say he can play faster on the Wolfgang..it just feels better. A little pricey..but hey you only live once.

Action on it is good, I like it a little lower and have yet to lower it. Fit was a like a glove, It is light, but the sound is awesome. My Les Paul & Jackson are heavier and I can tell when I have gigged with those, this is no sweat. I will give it an 8 as I bought it used and had some minor dings in it.

Well let's put it this way, if it can survive tours with Eddie, it can certainly survive my gigging, that is for sure. Hardware wise, this model is a 1997 and the hardware still looks brand new. I have beens playing since 1975 and have had a number of guitars. I have a 1975 Les Paul, Jackson PS-4 (modified) and this baby. If there is one problem (perhaps it is not), but the Drop D tuner takes the guitar out of tune. I have read, but not tested via the manual that I need to tighten down the bridge so it is not floating and that will fix the DropD problem we will see. I would replace this baby in a heart beat, if I could get another one for the price I paid for this one, these are not cheap.... I still give it a 10, even for the one minor Drop D issue, for what I paid value wise is a 10.

The first thing you need to do is pull the pickups and throw them in the trash. Ed had these patterned after his old, broken Gibson pickup and that's just exactly what they sound like.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

Factory setup was OK. The frets were sticking out of the side of the neck. I don't like that you can't adjust the pickup height. The maple top was just OK. I'm sure that the finish is exceptional by Peavey standards but if you put this right next to a Parker or a PRS, there's no comparison. The finish had sunk into the peaks and valleys of the implied quilt, it was cloudy, and covered in micro fine scratches. Peavey needs to upgrade the grit in their wet-sanding process. The trem looks like it's Korean or Taiwanese. Pot-metal construction and cheesy chrome plating.

I play new and classic rock.I own at this time a Marshall JCM 900 and 4x12 Marshall cabinet. The guitar is very quiet. The pickups sound great but I mostly use the bridge pickup generally, sometimes will flick to the front pickup ,it sounds good but I find the front pickup a little on the bassy side at times. I have thought about changing the pickups but why mess with a good thing-generally though I am happy with them. The pickups and the guitar are very warm sounding. The pickups are high output but not tons of distortion like other pickups.I really don't care for the tone knob Peavey should have left it off.It was a good idea to dip the pickups in wax to cut the noise etc..

The guitar was setup well when I bought it. The action and finish were also great. The d tuna works well once set up properly but I recently had to send it back to Peavey about one month ago ,I haven't heard anything yet. Also anyone who owns one of these guitars and uses the d tuna should invest in a hipshot trem setter to stabilize the tremolo. I noticed the guitar would shift tuning when the d tuna was out.I contacted Peavey rep and he said it will shift a little amount esp. if you use a tuner (really !) The trem setter fix this problem nicely. Great neck it took me a little while to get used to it but once I did I really love it, if you have small hands it seems to support your hand well.

My d tuna crapped out-sent it in to Peavey a month ago still do not have it back. That's my biggest bitch at this time. The guitar is solid though and I have played a ton a guitars selling for 3 times as much and they played like crap-that includes Fenders, Gibsons, etc.. I am always trying new guitars to see if I can find something better than my Wolf and I haven't found one yet. I do have another guitar I use when gigging and the one concern I have is with the floyd rose ,when you break a string you could make it through the tune but it is a major hassle to change a string with the wrenches etc.. If I had a tech like eddie it wouldn't be a problem-seriously -because of that fact I always bring another guitar-although I only broke 1 string on this guitar in over 2 years but If you play hard it may be a problem

Hello, sorry it has taken so long for me to write this review, but I have been busy hanging out with the guys from Racer X. The features on the Wolfgang have already been noted, so I'm just gonna get right to the yappin. It is important to note that I purchased my Wolfgang over six monthes ago, so the honeymoon is definetly over. Too many people jump in the honeymoon stage and rate this axe 10's all over the place. This guitar (like most)deserves a barrage of 10's like Elvis deserved his blackbelt. Oh yeah, my Wolfgang is purple...

I play rock, metal, and I play them quite crappy. However, the Wolfgang makes me sound decent. Bridge pickup has great tone, and I like the fact that I can't adjust the height. (I would just mess it up anyway.) Neck pickup has an excellent jentsa and allows me to scream out sweeping arpeggios. In my opinion, this guitar doesn't make you sound like a VH album, which is good. I happen to like Brian Wilson and this guitar gives me my pet sounds guite well. It is more versatile that I imagined. One complaint though. What is the deal with the pickup selection switch being wired backwards? I know Eddie was trying to make a guitar a little different but hey, don't jack with the direction of the classic 3-way toggle. I immediated re-wired it the way it should be. (down for bridge, up for neck.) I know this may sound a little picky but when you play fumble fingers the way I do, I don't need to also fumble with my switch. For the stupidity of the Artsy-Fartsy switching mechanism, the sound category recieves an eight. (This switching thing really put a bug in my keester, can't ya tell?)

Ok, I sat and looked at my Wolfgang for a few hours and noticed how nice it looked. Then I got straight to work. First thing I did was take the D-Tuna off. I also made my tremolo float. (Hey what was I supposed to do, sit there and do dive-bombs all day? C'mon, I needed my trem to be more versatile.) However, by the looks of it, I don't believe the quality of the Peavey Tremelo is very sturdy. I will prob. wreck this wammy in about a month. The action, fit, and finish came virtually flawless from the factory. I was really impressed. Oh, and of course, You HAVE to remove the back spring cover and trash it. For any amatuers out there, any time you buy a new or used guitar, just rip that back cover off and trash it. You playing a guitar with a back cover on is like wearing black dress socks with sandals. (In fact, I don't even wear sandals PERIOD. Got my butt kicked at a bar named the Fortune Club for wearing sandals... Never again.) As far as the rating in this category, I give the Wolfgang a seven for putting too much unnecessary crap on, such as the D-Tuna, Back Spring Cover, and having the Tremelo set up non-floating.

Peavey... Hmmmm. Peavey... If you think about it, (and let's not white-wash this either), we ALL have had a Peavey something or another at some point in our zit-riddled-early-career. Now, Remember what you did with that Peavey gear? You trashed it, and treated it bad. Then what happened? It still worked! Peavey is like a brick my friends, hey, I wouldn't lie to you. It will last... However, I would highly recommend getting the new strap locks, re-wiring the switch mechanism, removing the D-Tuna, and floating the bridge. Oh yeah, don't forget that back cover. I can almost garantee that you will be a rock star if that cover is gone. It has done wonders for me. now I'm 38 years old with a mullet cut, changing brake pads for $9 bucks an hour. But like I said, I can scream out those sweeping arpeggios like a cheeta on Meth. Solid Reliable guitar...

My Wolfagang has a carved maple top with a translucent amber finish which accentuates the moderate amount of flame nicely. I own a 1991 Fender Strat Ultra which has some flame, but not as much as the EVH. It has the standard features, two humbuckers, volume, tone, Floyd Rose with D-Tuna. I have been using drop D tuning since I first heard Unchained and this is one of those ideas that is so simple and ingenious that we should all be envious that we didn't think of it! I want to give this category a 10 based on the D-Tuna but it goes to a 9 based on the toggle switch selection configuration, which is the opposite of a Les Paul. Leave to Eddie to be different!.

I used to own an Ibanez RG560 but sold it because I thought that it sounded thin compared to my Les Paul. I wasn't going to buy another "Hot Rodded" guitar because I thought that it might have been the Floyd Rose making it sound thin. Then my friend was selling this Wolfgang and when I heard it I just had to buy it. I play a wide variety of music and after I played the EVH through my Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier I was sold. I never had a decent guitar with a maple neck and now I realize how important this is to the EVH sound. I love the way that the neck and bridge pickup sound is balanced for use with the three way toggle (A complaint that I have about my Les Paul). By the way this guitar, like the Les Paul, does have its own sound. My personal favorite is the way the bridge pickup cleans up when the volume knob is backed off for a song like Bottoms Up. Exactly like the album. I am giving this category a 9 just because I thought the brodge pickup would be over the top sounding but it is just very good.

My Wolfgang's neck feels perfect. The action was great and to the best of my knowledge came from the factory that way. I hear some people calling this neck a "Louisville Slugger". They must be used to those Ibanez necks like I had on the RG560. I think that the satin finish is excellent. The frets and intonation are perfect. This neck is really screwing up my playing on my Les PAul and Strat. If I could give this category a number higher than 10, I would.

Does anybody else out there have a problem with the nut around the input jack always coming loose, or is it just me? This is driving me insane. I see this guitar lasting a long time. I've read other reviews from people complaining about the steel in the Floyd Rose. I might have to agree with them on this one. I think that this wear around the posts are typical of a Floyd Rose. I think that this guitar will last as long as any other comparable guitar. This catetgory gets a 9 based on the input jack.

If this was the only guitar I owned I would complain about the lack of versatility (no single coil pickup). This guitar has a very specific application - hot guitar. The typical variety of double coil sounds can easily be coaxed from this guitar.
When this guitar is used for Van Halen music it is absolutely perfect. When I play this guitar through my MXR Phase 90 and my Dual Rectifer I get a tone that is very similar to Eddie's. I also use it for other shredder-type music such as Steve Vai and Blues Saraceno.
Based on this I give it a 10.

This guitar was made sometime in 1999 or 2000. It is USA made, and that's the only thing I would play now. Its features contain a 22-fret, birdseye maple neck, laminated body, 1 volume knob, 1 tone knob, and a 3-way selector switch. The pickups are passive, custom wound with a very warm tone. So they sound much like DiMarzios. The body is a red flammed maple top with a basswood back. The body style somewhat resembles an offset strat/prs look. The Bridge is a locking (non-floating) tremolo system with a drop-D tuner.

Well, to be honest. I kinda stumbled on to this guitar by accident. I've seen them before but didn't know what they were all about until I owned one myself. What really surprised me about this guitar is that it had a really fat sustaining tone, which was what I'm looking for. My rig consists of a Line 6 POD direct signal processor/preamp, a Marshall 4x12 Slant Cab, and a Marshall JCM 2000 100-watt head. These combinations, I think, go together hand-in-hand and I've been complimented on my sound everytime I do a gig. For both, clean and distorted, the wolfgang's got you covered. Sometimes the output is too overwhelming and had to backdrop a little on my gain settings. You can't adjust the pickup height. It's "as is" and didn't know it until I bought it. No big deal, but the big deal is that the arch-top body and birdseye maple neck compensate for a crisp, clean-cutting tonality that's unmatched for the price of this guitar.

This guitar, from what I heard, is set up by the factory according to Eddie's specs. In fact a friend of mine that worked at the music store where I bought the guitar from told me that if Eddie happens to drop in and play one of the wolfgangs in stock, finds that it's setup wrong, he will immediately call Hartley Peavey and tear him a new one. I'm not a big fan of the so called "louisville slugger" necks, but the action seems to work well with my playing style which is hard/alternative/classic rock. The action feels the same up and down the neck with no flaws. It's a very rugged neck with the graphite rods built in. Needless to say, like any guitars, the action seems to go out of wack when you're playing outside in hot, dry, muggy weather. But the graphite rods puts the neck back in place after a while. Sort of like the rubber band effect. With others, you have to readjust the truss rod frustratingly. On the Wolfgang, you don't.

I usually play this guitar without a back up. It depends on how small the stage or gig area is. Sometimes, I'll bring a Gibson Les Paul as a backup, just in case or if i'm far from home and don't have spare strings or time to string up. The Wolfgang seems to hold well without having to retune between sets. But when I use the drop-D tuner, I would have to retune by ear quick and it's hard to drop to D on-the-fly. Sometimes it will stick. I have to make sure it's pinched back all the way and in tune before I start the next song.

I've been playing guitar for over 18 years. I own 2 Gibson Les Paul 1960 Classic Models and a USA-made Ibanez USRG30 Custom. I prefer guitars with a flat fretboard radius and not rounded like a fender strat. My hands aren't very big so I have to play with a slimmer neck. I also much prefer the fatter, more open, full-bodied sound. I mainly bought the wolfgang for "tone". This is definitely a "tone built" guitar. Well-balanced, and rugged. I'm not too crazy about the hardware because it looks like "cheap" metal, the shaller tuners have a little play in them, but that's no big deal as long as they don't fall off. For as long as I owned this guitar, I only broke a string once within a year being that I didn't have time to change the strings before the gig. Other than all that, this guitar has never given me any problems. I would definitely recommend this guitar to anyone who can't afford a Gibson or a PRS. The Wolfgang's very Comparable. It's bulletproof!!!

My Wolfgang is a Vintage Sunburst model, made in 1997. I am not the original owner of the instrument, although it is in excellent condition. If you are already reading this you are aware of the features of the guitar, so I'm not going to re-list all of them. The finish isn't especially "flamed", but it does have a very nice wood grain and the coloration is very attractive. The neck is the wonderful, although the Ernie Ball Axis feels a bit better to me (but not by much). The neck is substantial. It is not some wafer-thin crappy thing that seems to be on more and more guitars. While I'm on the subject of new guitars; I've only heard two guitarists who could actually PLAY a 7-string guitar, and they are Steve Vai and John Petrucci. The rest just blast away on the low strings so why don't they just play a 2 or 3 string guitar? The top 4 or 5 probably never need to be changed! Anyway, the neck is very stable and solid. The lack of a finish makes the neck feel really fast, and the jumbo frets also add to the speed as well as the ability to make subtle adjustments in your vibrato. The Wolfgang was designed to ROCK, and is therefore not the most versitile guitar on the market. However, it does what it was designed to do extremely well. I've found no substantially better rock n' roll guitar out there, although I could argue that the Ernie Ball Axis is slightly better in some areas . . . It would be nice to have volume and tone controls for each pickup similar to a Les Paul.
A word about the D-tuner. This device is fantastic for dropping to a dropped-D tuning in an instant. It stays in tune perfectly too! This is one of the best inventions for the guitar in a long, long time.

I'm playing through a Marshall JCM 900 100 watt Dual Reverb head, a Marshall PB100 Powerbrake, and a Marshall 1936 speaker cabinet. I have all controls on 10 except the reverb of course. As an aside, you can really get some great sounds out of the JCM 900 head if you use the Powerbrake; it really kicks some ass! The pickups on the guitar are very quiet, with little notable hissing. Out of the bridge pickup the sound is very crunchy, with a heavy mid-range emphasis. The overall tone is very full and warm and it sustains forever. Out of the neck pickup, the sound is again quite crunchy for a neck pickup, and it again sustains for days. The neck tone is more "woody" sounding and is pretty smooth. Both pickups produce heavy, thick, harmonics, and both pick and tap harmonics are very easy to generate. In fact, pick harmonics are almost too easy as I seem to get them even when I'm not really trying to. I generally play 70's and 80's rock (a few 90's groups too) and as long as you are playing rock the guitar is perfect. This guitar is the closest thing to the perfect rock and roll guitar I have found. I'd hate to hear someone try twangy country music on it though; both because I don't like twangy country and because I'll bet it would sound even worse on this guitar.

I have no idea how it was set up when it was delivered. However, all fit and finish issues appear very acceptable. I've noticed no problems with poor frets or fretjob, and everything looks well done in terms of the routing of the pickups and tremelo. The finish is very attractive, and has no blemishes. I would like to see Peavey produce guitars at the same level as Ernie Ball. I believe that while the Wolfgang represents a big step forward for Peavey, they still have a way to go to catch Ernie Ball. I'm using Ernie Ball for comparison due to the striking similarities between the Wolfgang and the Axis (due to the person instrumental in their design). I would like to see better quality wood used in the body, and a neck-through design, or at least a set-neck design to further reduce the size of the heel where the neck joins the body. Otherwise, I have no complaints with any manufacturing/quality issues.

I don't play live, as I don't have the time. I believe that the Floyd Rose is not the top of the line 15 year model, but the step below. Another example of cost-cutting by big manufacturers. The finish has held up very well and the neck is just fantastic. Overall it appears very durable and reliable.

I've played for nearly 18 years. I also own a Les Paul, and have owned several other guitars including Ibanez and Hamers. Overall, I like the neck and feel of the Ernie Ball Axis slightly better. However, the fact that the Wolfgang has a tone control, and features a carved top similar to my Les Paul led me to choose the Wolfgang over the Axis. I found the lack of a tone control on the Axis to be a problem that I couldn't really get around. Also, the carved top on the Wolfgang means that it feels more like my Les Paul than the flat-top Axis did. Although I've pointed out some areas where I believe the Axis is better, I should also point out that in my opinion the Axis and the Wolfgang are the two best rock guitars out there, and both are exceptional guitars. I like both, but I bought the Wolfgang because of the tone control and carved top. I'd like to see seperate tone and volume for each pickup, but other than that there is nothing else I'd like to see added.

This is the standard archtop version with Floyd Rose tremolo w/ D-Tuna and custom wound pickups. 1 volume/1 tone/1 three way toggle switch. Included Peavey hardshell case-which is very cheap. The Floyd is the licensed version with the fine tuners angled away to the back. I never expected to own this version, but I do like it. So what if it's not case hardened steel-replace it in ten years as opposed to 15.

I run this guitar through a Marshall JCM 800 lead series 50 watt head into a 4/12 25 watt celestion cabinet. The only effect used is a Zoom

I've been playing for 18 years and own strats, L.P. I give this guitar a solid 7+. My only real complaint is the harmonic capabilities using the bridge pickup. I prefer the bridge pickup used in the Ernie Ball version. The guitar is somewhat uncomfortable to play in any way other than standing. It seems to be thrusting to the right. The neck is by far my favorite part of the guitar. I bought an Ernie Ball in 1992 and if I had to choose between the two I would take the Wolfgang on the neck alone.

My Wolfgang was made on March 30, 1997 in Leaksville, MS. By now, everyone should know the features, but I will say mine has a fully quilted purple top, which they do not make anymore. It's the Floyd w/ D-tuna model. In case you don't know, the Wolfgang is Eddie Van Halen's most recent incarnation of a signature guitar. It has two humbucking pickups, custom wound to his specs. The body is basswood with a maple top, and the neck's a bolt on birdseye maple w/ 22 frets.

I have had this guitar since April of 1997, so that's almost 3 years of experience with it. I see a lot of guys are still on their "honeymoon" with their gear and sling out 10's all over the place. I also laugh at these guys who have to compare the Ernie Ball to it...Geez. Who cares? Anyway, the Wolfgang sounds like nothing else. Of course, I too play rock and dab in Jazz and Country. It is a bright sounding guitar, and the pickups are not muddy. The bridge pickup has good bass and midrange w/out the shrilly high end. The neck pickup has almost NO mids at all, but it's my favorite of the two. It's a great sound thru the right amp. I run it thru a Mesa Boogie Mark IV head and a Boogie 2x12 Caliber cab. I can get all sorts of tones just by turning the guitar volume down. We're talking dark jazz clean, blues, ALMOST that "strat" sound when you set it right, and my favorite, the liquid smooth lead sound with great sustain. I wish Eddie would've let Peavey put a coil tap in there, because I am not a big fan of the middle position "both pickups on" sound. I like more of a scooped clean, but a lot of that comes from the amp anyway. Overall, I wouldn't change out the pickups because nothing else gets that neck lead tone and I've not found a bridge pickup I like better. I'll give the sound an 8 because of the middle position on the 3-way selector. I just don't like it. Bridge and Neck separated are bitchin'.

This is touchy...because I am a big fan of Peavey (see below). My guitar, when delivered, was perfect in every way. But a few weeks into it, I couldn't get it out of my head that the High E string was higher than the B string. The bends felt weird, not like other Wolfs. So I decided to dismantle the tremolo system and learned a HUGE piece of info. The Floyd Rose bridge saddles are numbered on the bottom--in sequence from Low E to Hi E: 1a 2a 3a 3b 2a 1b. Well, my saddles were mixed, the hi e was 2a and the B was 1b. So I switched them and that was the problem. Other than that problem, my guitar was/is a 10. So with that deduction, I'll give it a 7, they should've caught that at the factory.
Reliability/Durability
:

I have played live with this guitar. Greatest thing about the tremolo is that it is BLOCKED, so if you break a string, all the others will stay IN TUNE, not like floating bridges, where they will go sharp. Also, you can keep the same string on even if you break it, in emergency situations, provided it breaks at the bridge. I have had no problems at all with the finish or mechanics of this guitar other than me being clumsy and dropping pliars on it while changing strings. The neck has 2 graphite rods going parallel to the truss rod, so that neck doesn't move. This guitar is a tank like most of Peavey's stuff.

I sent it back to the factory for a fresh setup with ".10s" after I took the tremolo apart. Peavey, and Steve Smith the Guitar tech, have exceptional service. They say in the manual if you want to send it back for repair, they will make you pay shipping both ways. Well, I had a gig coming and 2-dayed it UPS to them. They paid the freight 2-day back, so I got my guitar back in less than a week. Peavey has always been helpful over the phone and stand behind their products.

Been playing 6 years. Own a Steinberger GM and a Koa Les Paul Custom Double Cutaway w/ Tom Anderson P/ups. I did a lot of research on the Wolfgang and besides the fact Eddie uses them, I like the blocked trem and the pickups. If it were stolen, it couldn't be replaced. It's a collector's item b/c of the quilt top. Plus I've broken it in for 3 years. I'd find the guy and give him a beatin'. Ernie Ball makes a fine guitar, and so does Peavey. If you want to rail on someone, rail on Gibson, they have gone straight down the toilet. But Peavey deserves some "props" because they build the Wolfgangs right and consistent. If I could change it in anyway, I'd have that middle selector position split the coils to get a cleaner "in-between" sound. Other than that, after almost 3 years, this is my main guitar. It gets played almost every day and sounds better than the day I bought it.

This guitar has all of the attention to fine detail that is found on even more expensive instruments. Some idiot in an earlier review stated that because it was a peavey and was massed produced it couldn't be taken seriously. One of the reasons Mr. Van Halen went to peavey is because they were a large enough company to be able to afford to make an instrument that only a few other company's could match in quality by charging $2500 or more. This guitar is every bit a Paul Reed Smith, "but less expensive", and probably a little better made than the other "mass produced" Gibson's and Fender's. The main reason I chose it is because the neck felt so much better than the fender strat's. The floyd rose stays in tune and doesn't compromise sutain. The birdseye maple neck with oil finish is not only beautiful to look at, but extreemly, and I meam "extreemly" easy to play. Two differntly wound humbucker pickups provide high output and low noise operation.

Has probably the best factory humbuckers I have ever heard! Very warm and rich with sustain. The maple top on the solid basswood body also gives it a crisp attack. It's been said a hundred times how this guitar sounds like the combination of a Les Paul and a Stat and their is a lot of truth to that. Warm and thick but still crisp and snappy. For me thats a winning combination. I play it through both a 5150 combo and a classic 50 4x10 combo, and I've found the guitar to be extreemly versital, but having two different amps doesn't hurt much either.

It came set up from the factory amazingly well. After a few weeks of playing however, I had to slightly adjust the neck. This guitar excels at what it was designed for - heavy rock. I have been using it with a Rivera R55 combo (no effects) and on the lead channel with the gain up - it screams. Power chords are well defined and crisp, quick leads sound very focused on the bridge pickup and extra liquidy on the neck pickup. Combining the two pickups creates a sound similar to that of a Telecaster (so you could get away with doing a Stones tune) but make no mistake - this is a heavy rock guitar. While you can dial in some bluesy-type tones with this guitar, they really don't measure up to tones I've heard from (good) Strat, Tele or Les Paul type guitars. It does produce some usable tones for jazz and country, but cleaner settings tend to sound somewhat steril (It's not the amp - other guitars sound incredible through it and I tried the Wolfgang through a couple of Fenders). To be honest, the Wolfgang clean sound reminds me of an Ibanez. If a really bluesy tone is your thing, look elsewhere - but if you love to play heavy music through a distorted Marshall, Mesa or Peavey type amplifier, this guitar is definately worth checking out. I didn't want to say it, but I have to agree with some of the other reviewers, this guitar really is a one-trick-pony. Maybe one-and-a-half-trick.

Factory set-up was poor. If they all come out of the factory set-up to Edward Van Halen's specs, then he must like a shitty set-up. Bad intonation, plus the action was so low, bends were out of the question and there was tons of fret-buzz. The finish was stunning though, perfectly bookmatched maple top, clean routings and it generally felt solid. My rating would be higher if the set-up wasn't so bad.

I have been playing for 15 years and also own a nice Fender Strat. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't bought this guitar. I was trying to find a beefed-up Telecaster and thought this would fit the bill. After playing it for a couple of months, I realized I should've just bought a Tele. I think the fact that this thing was so pretty and made by a guy who's (old) tone I love, clouded my judgement. I really like the neck and the way it's balanced and as I said, the distortion tones are very good (perhaps some of the best), but the sterile clean tones are really a turn-off for me. I'm trading it for a nice Tele instead. You're first instinct is usually right.

Lesse'... it's made in the USA, has 22 frets, basswood body with a flame maple cap (she's purple). She has one tone and one volume knob, two humbuckers of EVH's design (passive). The body style is pseudo-Strat-like. I'm sure you've seen this guitar. Mine has a Floyd Rose-licensed bridge, however I do like the models with stop tailpieces. She has non-locking tuners, but I'm not sure of the band. Included were a hardshell case and Wolfgang t-shirt.

This guitar suites one aspect of my style perfectly. It sounds very nice and clear when driven and has a better clean tone than either of my Strats (American Standard with stock pickups and Strat Plus Deluxe with red, silver and blue Lace Sensors). It has a mid of midrange bite that is missing in other guitars I have played and I love it. The sound is full and smooth, but crisp. I haven't had a lot of time to really experiment with it, but my equipment alone gives me lots of different tones (I play through an ADA MP1, a Hush 2CX, Alesis Quadraverb Plus and Peavey Classic 50/50 into a Marshall 2x12 cabinet). I don't have any dislikes at this time. Summing up it all, it has a clear, crisp sound with a bit of midrange bite.

The guitar wasn't set up terribly well. I won't blame Peavey, but I use 10's. That's not their fault. Even with the original strings, however, my intonation was only dead-on with one string. I have a picky ear and this bothers me. Nothing is worse to me than having a guitar in tune, yet have one note in a choird not chime quite properly. This was nothing setting the intonation couldn't cure. I did that once I put 10's on it, but left the action the same. The action is at 3, which suits me fine. It's low, but there's no buzz through the amp. There's actually very little buzz unplugged. There was also no relief in the neck, from the factory, but this was easily fixed.
One comment on the neck, though. This does *not* feel like a brand-new guitar. It feels very comfortable. The fretwork is very well done, much better than my Strats, which often knick my fingers they can be so bad.

I have been playing almost 14 years and also have the two above-mentioned Strats in my electric guitar collection. My fourth electric guitar never gets played. It is a *old* Ibanez Roadstar in which I have EMG's. The thing has been refretted twice and had a new bridge and some bodywork. She has been retired... she served well and got me through High School and those bands.
I'm buying another Wolfgang, anyway. I already have another on layaway which is configured exactly the same, but with a Cherry Sunburst finish. It's stunning. My favorite feature is the pickups. It's a shame EVH won't sell them... I'd put them in everything. This is just a great instrument and even has a greater tonal palette than my Strats so far. Feel free to email me with questions, since I am still getting into this guitar.

The features have been talked about by everyone else, so I'll just give some specifics regarding my model. I bought it used, the original purchase was made about the summer of 98. It is an amber Wolf with a beautiful flame top. Most of the flames that I see with this model seem to be fairly flat looking, but this has a really cool 3-D look going. Floyd, two humbuckers, and one bad-ass neck round out this guitar. The D-tuner is great!

I play hard rock/metal, but I also occasionally play with a classic rock band, and this guitar suits my needs perfectly. Not a huge variety of tones, but they are all usable. The front pickup is amazing. The bridge pickup just sings when playing leads. The only complaint that I have regarding the tone is the tone knob. I would rather have two volume pots (if I had to have the second knob), than a tone pot. This guitar is as beautiful to listen to as it is to look at.

This was a used guitar, but there was exactly one flaw, a little nick in the scoop. There were no other scratches, not even hairline ones that come from normal wear. Like I stated earlier, the guitar is beautiful. I could spend hours looking at it if it wasn't so much fun to play.

I have used it several times live and it is solid. The only flaw I can see is the whammy bar. The little plastic washer that is between the bar and the bridge is wearing out and giving me too much wiggle. I changed the strap buttons out with some strap locks, the last thing I want to do is drop this thing.

I have been playing for about thirteen years, usually playing crappy guitars. I wanted a nice instrument, something of high quality and this more than fit the bill. It looks great and plays effortlessly. Don't get caught up in the "Peavey" problem. This is NOT a T-60. This is easily the equal to the EBMM EVH, which a friend of mine owns and used to let me play. I find the Wolf to be at least on par with that machine and any others. I have had this guitar for a couple of months and wouldn't give it up for anything. If it were lost or stolen, after dispensing justice, I would get another one in a heartbeat. If you can find a nice one used (as I did, getting incredibly lucky), you can't beat the value.

I don't need to describe the feature but this has everything you could want for a rock guitar, my favorite is the blocked tremelo, you can break a string and not worry about going out of tune in the middle of the song. The neck is great too! It feels a little wider than the musicman axis and I like that. Love the feel of the unfinished neck.
Sound

For me the sound is perfect. It's not too bright and it has lots of punch at whatever volume you have it set at. The tone knob is nice on clean sounds. I think it is the nicest sounding guitar distorted that I have ever played. Real rich and warm sounding. Lots of overtones.

Two flaws on mine, I have the plain basswood model and you can see a crease down it where they glued the wood. and I bumped the back of it against my amp and it chipped the paint off down to the wood. Both are no biggies. everything else was perfect.
Reliability/Durability
:

I give it an eight because of the paint chip, I've hit guitars against things hard enough to dent them and never had the paint come off, and the strap button screws strip easily. Tuners and trem adjusters are very precise and the wiring job on the inside is very good also. I don't break strings as often on this guitar as I do on my other ones either, that tells me that the bridge is good quality.

If I had a Whammy bar on mine I would be doing dive bomb noises all night long, so I chose the one with the stop tail piece. Amber Basswood body, Birds eye maple neck, etc...I also wanted to maintain serious sustain which was another reason for the stop tail piece but I read in a Guitar Player review that they all sound the same. Two humbuckers etc...

I basically play Blues but with Rock and Jazz influences. When I first plugged it in at home it sounded a bit too rock (duh!). I have a 5150 too but I use a Marshall TSL 122 on stage. But with some tone and volume control manipulation you can get some nice liquidy Blues and Jazz tones. With the pickup in the middle I can get some faux tele sounds too. This comes in handy. The review in Guitar Player magazine hit it right on the money. It's got the creamy-ness of a Les Paul or a PRS and the snap and bite of a Strat. But...it doesn't sound like either one all the way. It doesn't get too dark or muddy like a Paul can get and doesn't get too trebly like a Strat can. After playing Strats for a while I had to get use to it's thick tone. I missed that single coil vibe but I'll get over it though. For what I paid I'll get over it quick. I found that it does other things that are quite nice that Strats can't do. The neck pickup is peachy and warm and heats up quite nicely when you want it to and cleans up well. The bridge pickup cuts through the band without being annoying and piercing. Very yummy!

Everything is top notch. When you get it from the store, it's set up for guitar wankers and speed shred freaks. The action was real close so you're lead to believe that this is the miracle guitar and you wonder why this guitar is so easy to play? I raised the action so I could dig in deep like a blues man should. The only other thing is that when I raised the action it created this sharp angle between the stop tail piece and the bridge that causes me to break high E's more than usual. I'll have to take it in to my guitar tech to check this out. It's a great guitar and the last thing you want to happen is to have to put it aside because of a broken string in the middle of a set. Everything else was fine. Oh...the neck is bitchin'! Fat, thick, and a flat fret board. It's made to play on in a serious way. It's a performance vehicle for expression. Nothing gets in the way of you wanting to say what you gotta say on this axe. Eddie knows his necks!

If feels good. Real good! It's ergonomic! Fits your body better than a Strat. Shorter scale so you don't have to reach so far up. It's all right there. Simple to use, no out of phase stuff. I think my Wolfgang is a 1997 model (5000's serial number). Features listed in all the other reviews applies here. Mine happens to be an amber-flamed top, and it is VERY nice. Peavey really knew what they were doing with this one. I bought it used at a great price from Elderly Instruments on the web, but I was ready to pay full price for one. Mine was a few years old, but I've played a new one right out of the box and these guitars are definitely consistent. My used one played identical to the new one. This guitar plays like a warm knife through butter, if you know what I mean.

Great hard rock sound. This guitar is not very versatile, but I'd compare it to a Les Paul with more features. I took mine to the local music shop to let their resident Wolfgang expert take a look at it, and put it through a 5150 head with a cheap Peavey cab and cranked everything up as loud as it would go. The guitar sang loud and clear, even under the fluorescent lighting in the store. Like I said, Peavey put this one together right.

Mine was purchased used, so I can't say if it was set up good from the factory. Elderly Instruments may have done some work on it, but the one I played straight out of the box new was nice. The guitar needs no adjustments, and even after mine sat out in the garage for two hours in 90+ degree heat (the stupid UPS guy left it out there without me knowing it) it did nothing to the set up. Mine has a few scratches on the back, but it was used. This guitar plays like a dream, and sounds good unplugged. It's when you really crank the amp that this guitar shows its true colors, and it's a beautiful thing when you do!

I've only had it a week, and since I'm a basement warrior right now and not in a band, I won't know how it gigs for some time. It seems to me that if Peavey and EVH put a guitar together, they probably intended for it to take some abuse. The guitar is rock-solid with high gloss on the top. Since Floyd Rose tremelos can be unpredictable sometimes, I would gig with a backup, but it probably wouldn't leave the stand.

I haven't had to call them yet, but I may give them a ring to get a manual for my 5150 head. The guy I took it to at the music store said one of his purple Wolfgangs had a flaw in the top, so he called them and they told him to send it back to them. He received four pictures a few days later from Peavey, and they let him hand pick from those pictures the new Wolfgang he wanted. He was floored by their understanding, and I hope I get the same treatment if I need them.

I bought this guitar after playing a Wolfgang Special a few months ago and deciding I had to have one. I've owned some stinkers in my 14+ years of playing the beautiful instrument known as the guitar, and I have recently started to build a good collection. I had a Les Paul and didn't care much for it, and recently sold it. I also have an American Strat, a Jackson Fusion, a Kramer Baretta, several Ovations, and a Takamine EF341-C, but the Wolfgang is the cream of this crop. Everything about the guitar is beautiful, and I'm thrilled to be the proud owner of one. I had played a 5150 half-stack in a band (it was the other guitarist's) and knew I would have one of those someday, but I never imagined I would fall in love with the Wolfgang.
I recently found a used 5150 head (I'm still searching for a cab for it) and the Wolfgang is obviously a great match for the amp. It sounds crappy through the Carvin cab I'm using, but I know how this guitar sounds with a 5150 head and cab. When the settings are right for the "brown sound", anyone could sound like EVH. This is not all this combination of equipment is good for, but it's what it does best.
I also have a Digitech RP-3, which I like to plug the Wolfgang into and try new patches. The guitar has great versatility with this unit, and I find myself losing track of time when I put the two together.
I never thought I would ever own any products from Peavey (I've always favored Crate amps and Jackson guitars), but if you take the time to try a Wolfgang I think you may be converted. This is a great guitar, and I may someday add another to my collection.

the wolfgang is a functions based guitar ,it is shaped kinda like a strat but has a slight angle to its neck offering a more lespaul feel while playing, although it is full scale it would appear to be shorter than most guitars because of the position of the trem and its small head stock. it was designed by edward vanhalen, its made in meridian mississippi..u.s.a.and has hard shell case and all its paperwork its mfg retail price is 1699.00 this one is black with white binding maple neck(birdseye)this one is about 4 years old.

I am using it with a Peavey ultra tube 112 and I love the sound. You can get different with the pickup selector and they all sound great. I have played it near a TV and a computer and it didn't seem to interfear at all which surprised me a lot. Very easy to dial in the EVH sound, which is why I bought it. If you like that sound, this guitar is for you. Although you can get different sounds, they are all along the same tone. Perfectly fine with me.

I can't find anything wrong with it. This guitar just seems to fit me. Real easy for me to play. I was comparing it to the axis and the neck on the wolfgang is what threw it over the top. If you are thinking of getting a special to save money, the standard is IMO a better guitar and worth the money. Now that they are more readily availible, at least in my area, You can probably find a good deal on one.

Front pickup was surprisingly cleaner than first anticipated, especially for clean settings. Can be a little too muddy when in distorted mode so a volume reduction may be used. Middle setting of both pickups can actually sound single coil-like, could be a plus or minus depending on one's needs. Rear pickup is the main one; very fat, full and sustaining yet remaining articulate even when on high gain setting. The guitar is used for a variety of music styles but is best suited for rock/metal .

Action was great, no adjustment needed. The other two Wolfgangs that were available at time of purchase also had great action. All three guitars also had no real discernable difference in tone. Very simple design ... Very straightforward pickup placement which is non-adjustable ... Actually I like this feature ... It doesn't give me the opportunity to screw it up without completely bastardizing the guitar ... I suppose if someone had a real burning desire to change the vertical position of the pickups, one could put stack washers under the screws holding the pickups in position ... This is an Amber Flame, Stop Tail Piece ... Great idea to sink the tail piece and the Tune-o-Matic bridge into the body of the guitar ... Very non-obtrusive and more comfortable on the heel of the hand ... The Flame is not brilliant, nor is it matched perfectly, but you can tell the builders took their time in assembly ... Tuners are Schalers ... Pickups are Peavey-wound to EVH's specifications.

I like to play many different styles of music and was a little concerned for a while before deciding to purchase this instrument, since I was hearing people call it a "one trick pony" ... This is very wrong, as I have come to figure out how to make it do other "tricks" ... It's most appropriate for many different tones, one just needs to experiement with vol/tone controls ... I'm playing stereo through a very old Peavey Classic 50-watt with 2-12's and an even older Vox Pathfinder 35-watt running to 2-10's ... So far, I'd have to say I'm very pleased with the overall tone ... Very rich, very full and very beefy, but with a little adjustment, can be very "strat-like", as well ... One thing I have noticed is the way the pickups seem to anticipate a pick strike ... This phenomenon has added a lot of dimension to my playing style ... I'm able to play with much more edge and attack (If and when I need it) ... This is an extremely quit instrument ... The pickups are double-dipped in parafin and the fact that they are secured directly to the body of the guitar reduces any noise even further ... You can take a pick and tap on the plastic part of the pickup tops and no noise, I mean nothing, comes out of the amp ... I couldn't be more pleased with the sound.

Some may disregard what others are saying about the Wolfgangs coming ready to play right out of the box, but this was very true in my case ... It came strung with the Wolfgang .009's, which may be a masterful marketing ploy on Peavey's part, but they seem to be a good match ... I'm used to using .010's, but was told by Peavey that I would probably have to make a truss rod adjustment, which I really have no desire to do myself and don't want the guitar to spend anytime anywhere I don't know exactly what's being done to it ... As I've described above, I thought the pickup placement and locked positions is a great idea ... From a craftsmanship perspective, I'd put this up against and Les Paul I've every owned or played ... The only thing I noticed was two very small rough edges on the top of the headstock ... It's not noticable at all, unless you actually touch it ... The neck is Oiled Birdseye Maple (very attractive) and there may be some issues with keeping it clean, but it will be worth the effort.
Reliability/Durability

Haven't had the opportunity to play out with the guitar yet, but based on the paces I've put it through at home, I'd guess it will be very road-worthy ... Quality hardware throughout will ensure long life ... The strap buttons it comes with are fairly small and I would recommend a strap-lok system of some sort ... I bought the Schaler standard loks and they seem to be working fine ... Just make sure you have them screwed in real good ... I didn't really want to force them in too much when I installed them, for fear that the original screws would then be too small to reinstall if I ever needed to do that ... But, after a slight tightening, it should be secure ... I look forward to many years of service from this guitar and would play a gig without a backup (If I had to).

I've been playing for just over 30 years ... I know, an old fart ... But let me tell you I'm 40 and listening to Nine Inch Nails while I'm submitting this, so I guess what I'm saying here is "YOU"RE NEVER TOO OLD TO ROCK" ... I'd buy this guitar again ... When you first pick up this guitar, you can feel the quality in the components and craftsmanship, but it's not until you plug it in and crank it up that you really appreciate this as a possible guitar for the ages ... The only thing I'm really disappointed in has nothing at all to do with the guitar, it's the case that comes with it ... Peavey must have really trying to keep costs down on this piece, because the case is crap ... I'm really thinking of having one custom-built ... There's very little storage space in the case and the top half has some rough edges that can be felt under the fur that could come in contact with the guitar around the pickups ... It can probably wait, but eventually I'm going to have to do something about it ... One last thing ... For those of you who think all of us nuts who bought this guitar because its got EVH's name all over it couldn't be more wrong (well at least in my case) ... I put off buying one of these for two years, just to give the guitar a chance to prove itself and Peavey to work any production problems out ... I'm glad I did and if you're looking for a piece in this price range, buy this guitar.

These guitars are made at a relatively new Peavey facility here in the United States dedicated exclusively to the manufacture of electric guitars. I've never really seen Peavey as a marquee of quality equipment and I was really skeptical when I heard that Edward Van Halen was leaving Ernie Ball for them. I don't know if it's because they use CNC equipment to shape the components or if Edward's involvement with the design and final approval of the finished product is at the root of the quality of these guitars, but mine is a very high-quality guitar. The neck is birdseye maple with a tilted headstock and 22 frets. It has graphite reinforcement and I think the graphite may have a lot to do with the excellent sound of the instrument as well as the stability of the neck. The neck comes with an oiled finish. I actually applied Birchwood-Casey gun stock wax to mine shortly after I bought it. That's what Ernie Ball used to seal the necks on the EBMM EVH models and I wanted to seal mine as well as possible. Edward can swap necks off whenever he wants, but I live in a really humid climate and wanted to do as much as I could to keep mine from warping. I'm also a little anal about cleaning filth out of the grain on the fretboard. Edward told me that he likes to see it build up because it means he left a part of him on the guitar, but to me it's like wearing dirty underwear. I used a 50/50 mixture of Murphy Oil Soap and water to clean my fretboard. That's from the EBMM cleaning instructions and Murphy's really cleans deep into the grain. The tuners are mini Schallers. Mine came with pearl buttons, but I replaced them with ebony ones because the pearl looked like they belonged on a cowboy shirt to me. The jack and toggle are OEM Switchcraft parts. The guitar has a three-way toggle switch and a single tone and volume control. Two Peavey-made humbuckers round out the electronics and they are screwed right into the wood. This seems to make a great difference in the tone of the instrument. I could never go back to a guitar with ring-mounted pickups. The bridge is a Floyd Rose-style trem with Edward's patented D-tuner. It's set up so that it can do dives, but you can't pull up on it. By resting flush on the body there is a solid contact you don't get with a floating bridge and both the tone and intonation benefit. The arch-top body on my Wolfgang has a bookmatched carved maple top on a 3-piece basswood body. The body has binding where the maple meets the basswood and the basswood back in painted black. It came in a molded case.

This is the finest guitar I've ever owned. I have a Budda Twinmaster 2x12" combo and it is very revealing. It won't cover up a crappy signal coming from the guitar like a lot of amps, but when you have a really great guitar plugged into it there's magic. Since I bought my Wolfgang last summer I haven't been able to stand playing anything else. I used to go into music stores and anxiously try out all the new arrivals, but my Wolfie has spoiled me. You can pay five times as much for a new guitar and not equal the sound of these instruments. The neck pickup has won me over. It gets amazing, rich, warm tones. When I have my Budda cranked up it distorts perfectly into these big, warm, buttery tones that make Leslie West and Billy Gibbons sound thin and brittle. Both pickups never lose their ability to articulate, though. Notes jump out at me and it makes me wonder sometimes if it's partially because of the effect of the graphite on the resonant frequency of the neck. The bridge pickup started out as my favorite and still lives up to the guitar nicely. It has a warm P.A.F.-ish tone that remains sparkly without ever being harsh. Both pickups are medium output and drive the front end of my amp nicely, but not so hard that I can't get great clean sounds.

The setup of these guitars from the factory is half the reason to buy one. When the Wolfgang was first released there were a number of instruments distributed around the country and someone from the music press tried one and wrote something nasty about how it was set up. Edward Van Halen had Peavey recall all the unsold instruments and had them shipped to his home where he modified his workshop at 5150 to handle setting up several guitars at once. He developed procedures for assuring that each and every Wolfgang arrives set up exactly like his personal guitars and to this day all Wolfgangs are set up to these exacting specs. I've personally played guitars that Edward uses on stage just hours before or after a performance and mine feels pretty much exactly like them right down to the pure nickel strings. In fact, I've been so impressed by the setup that I've been changing the strings off for Peavey Wolfgang strings so that nothing much will fluctuate each time I restring my guitar. I know this all sounds like an ad for Peavey. I've waited a few months to write about it so I could be sure my feelings wouldn't change over time. I still think it's the best guitar I've ever played. Mine came with a flame top. If I was going to fault Peavey for anything it would be the wood they use. I wish the basswood was a single piece instead of three pieces glued together and I wish the birdseye maple in the neck was more figured. I also wish the top was a little better. When the Wolfgang was introduced the maple-topped versions all had quilt tops, but Peavey said they were having a hard time getting nice wood and went to flame tops. I'd pay the extra money for one of these with a beautiful top and a one-piece body, but that's all visual and shouldn't be why you buy an instrument.

Edward Van Halen beats the shit out of his Wolfgangs when he plays them and they deliver night after night. The only differences in his Wolfgangs are the big eyelets he screws into the body to hook his strap on and his XLR-jack thingee that he screws into the body to keep from jerking his cord out when he slides across the stage on his knees. Normal human beings should do just fine. Heh...

I've been playing electric guitar since I took a rifle my father bought me to a pawn show and traded it for my first electric in about '77. I've owned several pretty nice guitars, but this is the most satisfying guitar I've ever owned. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. Edward owns versions of the Wolfgang Special with different pickup configurations. He has one with two P-90 pickups as well as one with three single-coil pickups. I imagine (though I never asked) that they're test guitars so he can decide on the perfect example of P-90 pickups and single-coil pickups for this body. If he ever decides he's got it right I'll jump at the chance to own one of each. Edward Van Halen has great judgement when it comes to building guitars. A really fine guitar with a beautiful tone will sound great playing clean fingerpicked country licks into a Bassman or through an ultra-high-gain amp doing dive-bombs and kicking out artificial harmonics and my Wolfgang lives up to that and more. This instrument is an outstanding success. I feel lucky to have benefitted from Edward's wisdom.

Features have been covered in depth by others, but I'll just give a quick review. Basswood body, flamed maple top (also available in curly maple), 22 fret birdseye maple neck, figured top, volume and tone control (unlike previous Musicman model), Floyd style tremolo with D-tuner on low E string and two humbuckers. The pickup selector has been moved to the top of the guitar (similar to a Les Paul) from the previous MM version and I find this a much more comfortable position. I previously owned an EVH Musicman and found myself sometimes accidently hitting the pickup selector when picking. I find this guitar to be pretty versatile and am able to get a wide variety of sounds using my rack setup. I do wish the pickups could be coil tapped to provide some single coil sounds, hence the reason for the 9.

The guitar sounds fantastic. I am giving it a 10 on what it was designed to be. It was not designed to be all things to all people and I've seen others downgrade the rating due to a lack of flexibility. I have been able to use this guitar for a wide variety of sounds and it responds great. It is not going to sound like a strat due to the humbuckers, but will cover most other styles well. I run it through a rack setup consisting of a Marshall JMP1 preamp, digitech effects unit and Mesa 2:90 power amp to 2 4x12s and it smokes. The d-tuner has also been a welcome change from having to switch guitars to play drop d songs. The neck pickup is one of the sweetest sounding neck pickups I have heard and is great to solo with. As a previous owner of an EVH Musicman it's hard for me to say which sounds better as I've gotten new equipment since owning the MM so it's not an apples to apples comparison. I will say that the Wolfgang has been everything that I hoped it would be and it sounds GREAT.

My new Wolfgang is a sunburst flame top and it emits a sense of class. It is just stunningly beautiful. My former EVH MM had a purple curly maple top and was a sight to behold. My new sunburst Wolf is a bit more understated than my previous MM, but no less beautiful. I like the shape of the body more than the MM version and I think the figured top also adds to a better looking guitar (my opinion, I certainly wouldn't fault you if you preferred the MM). The finish is absolutely perfect, not a single flaw and the guitar was set up perfectly at the factory. This guitar plays VERY similar to my former MM, but my Wolf plays slightly better than my MM. I've seen others say the opposite and I believe alot has to do with the individual guitars. This guitar plays as well as any I have ever played.

This guitar has been a treat to play live. Being that the bridge sits flat on the body (tremolo only goes down), it is a very sturdy live axe that stays in tune amazingly well. It's is also a treat to play a floyd equiped guitar that doesn't go out of tune if you break a string. So far, no problems.

I can't say enough good things about this guitar. I also own 2 Carvins (each with a curly maple top) and 2 Ibanez's, but since getting the Wolfgang, it has been getting the lion's share of my playing time. I give it 10 based on what it was built to do (don't buy it if you're looking for strat/tele sounds, go buy a Fender). This sounds great for all different types of music (I currently play in a cover band that plays everything from 70s funk to classic rock to modern rock with some hard rock thrown in also). It is built as well as any other axe I've ever played. If you get a chance, check one out.

This guitar has the most beautiful flamed maple top with a tobacco sunburst. The guitar has a basswood body with a carved, bookmatched maple top which adds a little brightness and promotes more sustain. It comes equipped with 2 Humbuckers custom wound to ed's specs and bolted into the body. They are controlled via a reverse-wired (which I like) 3-way toggle switch. Master tone and master volume knobs. The tremolo on this baby is AWESOME! Floyd-rose locking trem flush mounted to body (dive-bomb only) with patented D-tuna on the e-string, which rocks by the way. Sperzel tuners. The body is a tele-inspired monster with an arched top and offset cutaway. It's very balanced. The neck and fingerboard are made from the same piece of wood to keep consistency in the grain. Constructed from the most beautiful birdseye maple I've ever seen. It's oil-finished only with no lacquer which prevents drag on the neck. It's a standard 25 1/2 inch scale and is slightly arched back for a more comfortable feel. It is also the fattest damn neck i've ever had the priviledge to play. The guitar comes a shitload of tools and even a damn user's manual.

I play a wide variety of musical styles and this guitar fits most rather well, although it is still built to rock. I play it through a Line6 Axsys212 combo and the two are almost a perfect match. The guitar is a little bright due to the maple but that is no problem at all. It has unique sound qualities that I just can't explain. I like everything about the way it sounds.

I had someone at the shop take a look at the setup on the guitar. He told that it was the closest he's seen on a production model to being exactly to EVH's specs. The action is REALLY low which I'm not used to but it just fits this guitar well and I like the feel of it. The pickups aren't going anywhere because they're screwed right into the body which allow for maximum sustain and are great. The maple top is almost perfectly bookmatched, it's just beautiful.

I've been playing for five years and have owned several guitars. I currently own a Black Hamer Custom Shop Chapparal, Cherry Epiphone G-1275 double-neck, Line 6 Axsys212 combo. If this guitar were ever stolen I would first track down whoever stole it and beat the living shit out of them and then I would go and buy another wolfgang.
My favorite feature on this guitar is the D-tuner. I play a lot of songs in drop d tuning and I have floyd rose trems on all my guitars. Now I don't need them because I can use this guitar for both tunings.
One thing I need to share. The day I went to buy mine a friend of the owner's just got his wolfgang that very day. It turned out that he waited over two years to get his. I just went down to get a price check on it, but after that guy let me play his for a while I fell in love and I ordered one that day. The day I went to pick it up, the owner's friend was there just to see me and my new guitar. I ended up only waiting two months for mine so I guess he was a little envious.

Great feel and action...I concur with others that this feels like a cross breed of a Les Paul and a Strat...Nice finish, but the flame did not stand out as well as I hoped...Tape around front humbucker was loose....not cool for a guitar this expensive...was not really impressed with the "birdseye" either...somewhat sparse. But this guitar gets good marks here for feel and action for sure...great factory setup on that part.

I won't repeat what the other reviews already say about what features the Wolfgang has. Mine is with a stop tailpiece bridge instead of a floyd rose. Unless you're a wizard on floyd rose bridges, I think they're more of a hassle than anything else. I like the position of the volume knob making it convienent for volume swells. The pickup selector is in the same location that Les Pauls place them. The neck is unfinished birdseye maple. This is simply the best neck I've ever seen, period. It has a feel, and a look, that is unmatched. Mine has a transparent amber flame top for the body color.

Obviously this guitar is going to have incredible dirty sounds. But that's not my speciality. What I was surprised and impressed with was this guitars clean sound. I like a fat, jazzy clean tone. And I can easily get that with the neck pickup. I play it through a Carvin VT50 in case you wanted to know. Along with occasional effects like Boss compressor and Ibanex tube screamer. I'm not noticing any unwanted noises either. And when I want to add some dirt to my sound, it can be easily done and controlled.

Although the price is high, this is a top of the line guitar. I recommend the fixed bridge version unless you use a floyd rose a lot. One might think they're paying the high price because of Eddie's name. That's not necessarily the case. Without it, it'd still be very close to the same. It is 1 of my 2 dream guitars..the other being the Paul Reed Smith hollow body McCarty model.

My style is like that of Van Halen/Def Leppard/Metalica with a little Vineyard/Jars of Clay thrown in ( I play Sunday morning and evening Church services; fast songs I use my 12-string Yamaha acoustic, and for the slower stuff I use the Wolfgang. My main amp is a Rivera R-30 tube amp, loaded w/ e34sl's (which are a little hotter than EL34's); currently a BOSS ME8 w/ expression pedal, but have ordered a Peavey Tube Fex (tube preamp/processor) w/ PFC10 foot controller and a BOSS EV5 expression pedal. The W has such amazing versatility and tone that just sings everytime I pick it up. I traded my US Stat Plus for it, and I never looked back. Heavy playing, or acoustic sounding, or gut wrenching blues, the Wolfgang does it all. Think of a Strat and a Les Paul having a baby. The Wolfgang starts where the others take off !

This guitar was/is as is from the factory; NO ADJUSTMENTS WERE MADE, except for the d-tuner. No flaws whatsoever. The finish seems to withstand scratching very well, especially on the back. Peavey is really trying to compete with a market that has been traditionally Fender/Les Paul. But to be honest, the rest of their guitar productline is no different than Ibanez or Kramer. The Wolfgang and Wolfgang Special are serious guitars for picky guitarists who demand purity and workmanship.

I have been playing guitar for 13-14 years. I also own a 12-string Yamaha (FG-412) with a piazo pu, and a Ibanez EX360 which is dismantled and drilled to the wall of my sound room. When I bought the Wolfgang, I had never played it before I drove 5 hours to trade off my Strat. I brought my amp and fx w/me and tried out Wolfie for 10 minutes and bought it on the spot (it was a store demo, but never played much, the dealer was very protective). As said earlier, I plan to buy a cream Wolfgang Special w/trem only because of the US $ and the availability of the Wolfgang Standard. If I do run into so $'s I would like to get a red maple one like mine.
If you were holding off getting this guitar, don't. Get it now. You will not be disappointed, you will not second guess.
Also, please be patient w/ Peavey, is it takes a while to get your order processed. They are making sure you get the BEST guitar possible with NO compremises.

I just "found" a used Gloss Back Wolfgang. I've had my eye on one for a while but really thought they were a bit steep in price for the casual player like myself. The used on I bought was mint! Not a scratch. I've been very pleased with this guitar! The 2 main things I like are 1) drop-d tuner 2) unfinished, oiled neck. The guitar stays in tune. Period. The neck really is the most comfortable/playable thing I've ever played, much less owned. Workmanship is outstanding! Paint is like a mirror. I'm really happy with it. So much so, I traded a Les Paul Studio which I dearly loved for it and have no regrets about it. 100% satisfied.

I'm a rocker and the guitar didn't clean up enough for me as just about ALL guitars don't. I use a array of FX thru a Marshall JCM-2000 ( DSL-100 ). Most are in the FX loop, but I do run a compressor, crybaby and phase before the input of the Matshall. As with ALL my guitars ( except single coils ) I do the .001 uF disk cap across the volume pot. The Wolfgang is no exception. It just doesn't clean up enough thru a high gain tube amp for my taste without this mod. Doing this lets me roll the volume off to 2 or 3 into the DSL100 Ultragain channel ( lead 1 ) and get a nice "rocker" clean sound. Just a twinge of distortion but twangy clean.

My EVH is a a22 fret, basswood , black topped model with the floyd rose liscensed peavey locking tremolo and the ultra nifty D-tuner. It has two humbucking pickups that were custom wound to Eddie's ears (screwed right into the body - nice and tight. The neck is unfinished birdseye maple and feels nice and smooth. The guitar is well built and has almost no noise especially compared to my Am. Std. Strat. I have been playing a strat for seven years and had a les paul as a second guitar. I found that the EVH had a humbucker sound that got closer to where the strat left off. I play it through a Fender Blues deluxe (outfitted with Boogie tubes) and a bunch of stomp boxes including a tube screamer. After looking at a number of replacements for my les paul I picked the EVH because it sounded better than a les paul, it was very well made, but most importantly it plays absolutely beautifully.

I've only had it since July 1988, have played about 5 gigs with the guitar and have broken two times. I have changed to Blue steel strings and haven't had a problem since (but then again I haven't played that much). A strap locking sytem would be good. I've already converted my strap buttons over. I would not gig without a backup. With the exception of the strings breaking, this guitar is solid and dependable.

Basswood body, carved basswood top, two Peavey humbuckers, volume and tone controls, oil-finished birdseye maple neck, high-profile medium frets.
I ordered this guitar special with a stop tail piece and tune-o-matic type bridge. No wammy.
Pretty basic list of features, but they all seem to compliment each other very well. Doesn't feel like a "parts" guitar like some others in this category.
Sound

Some owners feel this guitar is limited to a hard rock sound, by design. With a bit of tweaking, it's proving to be quite versitile for me.
I use it as a counterpart to a Tele Thinline for mostly R&B and blues. I play both through a RI Marshall JTM45 head and 2x12 cab. I use a FullDrive II for extra helpings of grind and an old Boss DM-3 to compensate for the lack of reverb in the Marshall.
The stock pickups are VERY hot. From what I understand, the routing in the guitar body is too shallow to allow common aftermarket pickups to fit. That's troubling, but not unworkable. I'm going to try a different set of power tubes in the amp to get a bit more clean headroom. It's tough to coax a clean sound out of a non-master, single channel Marshall. Even one running 6L6s like a JTM45. Rolling off the volume and the tone a bit helps out a lot. I can't imagine this guitar without a tone knob. It adds a great deal to the variety of sounds hiding in this guitar.
The neck, as you probably know, is great. Better than just about anything else I've sampled. Being unfinished, it does get dirty quickly. A person may or may not like this "lived in" look. I use Guardsman Furniture Pollish on the neck when changing strings. It's a no-wax, no-silicon cleaner that brings the neck back to as-new condition without any residue. The neck is kind of a large, round radius, so the high-profile frets are the perfect compliment to make it very easy to play.
The overall sound of the guitar is big. It does have its own character, though. I find it to be very much unlike a Les Paul or a similar double humbucker carved top. I guess it's nearest competitor would be the Music Man EVH/Axis. I tried several of those, but didn't find the appeal that I found in the Wolfgang. Didn't like the flat top. Didn't like the neck shape as well. The pickups were too trebbly for me and couldn't be adjusted with no tone knob.
Overall, my only gripe is the dancing around you have to do it you don't intend to always use the pickups at full-tilt. I left the rating higher because that impression is from a single-channel amp perspective. I'm sure a multi-channel amp user would have different results.

When I received the guitar it was still boxed up from the factory. It was ready to go right out of the case. Even still in tune after all the traveling it did.
I've heard some bad stories about the fit and finish, so I looked in the spots I heard were the most troublesome. Some owners have said that with the solid colored tops that you can see the seams between the pieces. Not so with mine. I've also heard the finishing on the frets were not so good, but mine were perfect.
The guitar came with EVH .09 guage strings. I thought the strings were crap and replaced them with Dean Markley Blue Steels. I've kept .09 on for the last couple string changes. I run .10s on my Tele, but the lighter strings seem to be a better match for the Wolfgang. Don't ask me why. It's not like this guitar needs any more presence or girth, so I may wait to introduce .10s to it.
I've been over the whole guitar a couple times with a careful eye and can't find anything to indicate any less than high quality US made instrument.

This guitar seems built for live playing. Very comfortable and very solid. I don't feel I have to baby this guitar at all.
Originally, I didn't want a black guitar. I was worried the finish wouldn't stand up to what it would go though playing live and going to and from gigs. So far, so good, but it will (hopefully) take years to tell if it will be up to it.
All other hardware appears to up to the task of years of service.
I've played rehearsals without a backup, but not a gig. That's only because of sound requirements. Sometimes you just need single coils to get the job done. The Wolfgang is not showing a tendance to break strings, and stays in tune very well even with lighter strings.

I haven't dealt directly with Peavey. I have dealt directly with their dealship and mail order policies, though. I wanted this guitar without a trem, and none were available locally. As a matter of fact, there was only one Wolfgang in the whole city! That left finding one somewhere that it would have to be shipped from. Peavey does not do mail order. It also restricts its dealers to selling within their immediate area. After finally finding a stop-tail Wolf out of state, I had to find a "middle man" to ship it to so it would be considered a local sale. That friend of mine then shipped it to me. A royal pain. Plus I got hooked for sales tax, being a local sale.
Washington Music Center in MD were very helpful. They guided me through all aspects of the purchase, and were more than fair about the price considering it's pretty low availability.
No repairs needed in 6 mo. of use.
Peavey has a nice web site and a posting area for questions within the site. I can only assume customer service is pretty responsive.

I've been playing for about 9 years and have owned a variety of guitars including a Jackon, Strat Plus, Ibanez Roadstar, Tele Thinline and now the Wolfgang. I wanted a double humbucker with some character when I bought the Wolfgang. I tried the US Hamers, Music Man EVH and Axis and a variety of PRS models. Other than the higher-dollar PRS stuff, nothing but the Wolfgang felt like all the pieces were designed to work together as a unit.
I hope the thing doesn't get stolen. I'm not sure I could find another and I'm equally unsure if I would go through the same hurdles to get it.
Again, the pickups may limit what you want to accomplish with it so I advise giving it a good test run before parting with your cash. Nothing else about the guitar's features is limiting, though.
Availability may also be an issue. If the trend continues it may be hard to make as good of a financial deal as you might on a Hamer or Music Man.

Features....well, it rocks, is that a feature. Really though, it only does one thing well and that's heavy rock. You wouldn't want this guitar for the blues (I'm in a blues band) and it isn't any good at clean tones. The unplugged sound of it is sort of dark and buried. I wish I'd waited to get a maple topped one (mine's Ebody), but I HAD to have it (I'm a big VH fan). I only bought it because it's fun to play and is fun to bring to jam's. Everything about it is meant for Van Halen-esque music, so in terms of features, i'd give it a 4.
Sound
:
5
It sounds only good (maybe even great) when pushing a tube amp hard and loud. Through an AX2 it kills on the Van Halen and Marshall settings. Loads of fun to play this way. I installed a coil split and the single coil sound of the pickups is poop, but then, that's to be expected, it's a hard rock guitar. Clean tones are pretty useless as far as I'm concerned. For the heavey stuff i'd give it a 9, for the overall I have to give it a lower mark.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The action, setup, fit and finish are all good (the setup was near perfect), but the finish on the fretboard (or lack thereof) is a big headache. The fingerboard get filthy quickly and doesn't clean up all that easily. I've taken to just letting it get dirty and not worrying about it.

The neck pickup was broken when I got the guitar and it would cut out intermittatly. I took it to a Peavey authorized repair dude and had it replaced. Since then I've had no problems with it. I wouldn't bring it to a gig without a backup because it couldn't possibly serve all my needs....but it's a fine instrument.

It took me two trips to the authorized repair person before he accepted that the pickup was the culprit and not the switch like I told him. I'm not sure if Peavey should be held responsible for his screw up, but they did send out the replacement switch and pickup fairly quickly. All the work was covered under the Warrantee.

I've owned it about a year and I paid way too much for it back when they were sort of rare. I'd buy it again because I enjoy playing it, but that has a lot to do with me being a fan of Van Halen. I own a high quality strat, tele, Les Paul, and Paul Reed Smith. I'd have to place the Wolf at the bottom of the list in terms of being an all around guitar....BUT this guitar was built to Eddie's preferences so I can't give it a low mark for features and sounds it lacks, because it's really his preference even if it isn't mine. It does what it's supposed to, so overall I'll give it a good rating. P.S. I feel that people give 10's out too easily on this database and I've scaled all my scores down, reserving a 10 for when I find the ultimate guitar.

The guitar is a 1998 that was made in Missisippi USA. The neck is birdseye maple with a matched birdseye maple fingerboard (22 frets, 15" radius). It has a volume and a tone control and a 3-way toggle pickup switch. The guitar has 2 humbucking pickups that are custom made for EVH and are passive. The body is basswood with a figured flamed maple top (transparent purple). The bridge is a Floyd Rose with patented D-tuner (allow you to goto drop D tuning with unlocking the nut). The tuners are Schaller which are of course excellent.

For a balls out, fat sound, there is no better guitar. I am using a Peavey 5150 212 combo amp with a BOSS GT-5 effects processor. The amp is a little noisy (to no fault of the guitar though) because it is a very high gain amp (5 pre-amp tubes!!!). Very fat, full distortion sound. My only dislike is the guitar is a little muddy when using the clean channel, but with a minor volume knob tweak, it does the job. I am giving a rating of 9 because its not a jack-of-all-trades guitar. It simply does what it was designed to do...rock!

This is a standard EVH Wolfgang with the maple top, floyd rose trem, and a vintage gold top finish. It was bought yesterday at a large music shop in Ft. Lauderdale. The pantended d dropper is an amazing device and works amazingly well. The guitar features 2 H.B. pickups, 1 master volume and 1 tone pot. It also came with premium shaller tuning pegs. In this configuration, I wish that there were 1 volume pot per pickup for dynamic pickup changes ala Les Paul and forego the tone control. I will change this in the near furture and this will result in a 9.
Sound

The sound is quite different than a les paul, especially the neck pickup. On a Les Paul, the neck pickup sounds warmer, but sometimes muddy. The articulation of the neck pickup is similiar to that of the bridge except fuller. Neck pickup sounds much brighter than that of the Les Paul guitar. Out put is high for both pickups and this guitar really overdrives the tubes. I played this guitar through my Plexi 100 watt Marshalls and it was spot on. The output is near that of the 500t gibson pickups with a little less midrange. Power chords roar from the guitar and lead lines sustain into controllable feedback.

Here Peavey suprised me once again. This guitar is the best playing guitar that I've EVER owned out of the box. The action was set perfect. The neck was in tune all over the neck. Speaking of the neck, the fret work was even, smooth and well done throughout. The guitar sports a wide flat neck that allows easy access the the high register. The vintage gold paint even had that greenish look of the best Gibsons. A can't find a flaw.

WOW, the versatility of the Les Paul combined with a floyd rose trem, fast neck, awesome action, worn in feeling, and drop D tuner. What a concept and what a package. I will trade the tone pot in for another volume and then I will have the PERFECT guitar. Imagine this guitar with push/pull pots for single coil operation ala Jimmy Page L.P.? You would never strap on another guitar again. Outstanding VALUE.

Number one is that this is a beautiful guitar, in many more ways than one. It looks beautiful and it plays beautiful. I have a 98 Flamed Amber Model. The pickups are Eddies lil invention, and they sound great. You almost get a "quack" out of the guitar with each note you hit. The basswood is not too heavy but not too lite..It measures out to be a perfectly balanced guitar if you ask me. I was very impressed by the neck most of all. It is a beautiful Birds Eye Maple, that has a natural finish, and it has a very flat radius. You can bend notes so easily! And of course, The Drop D tuner is a very cool feature for anyone that wants a locking nut and still be able to Drop without taking off the allen screws.

The sound is great. Like I said before..You almosy can hear a quack with each note kinda like you can when you listen to Eddie. The variety in sound is unbelievable. The bridge pickup is bright and twangy like a Styrat, while the neck is fat and full like a Tele or a Les Paul.

Built in 1998, just got my Wolfie. I have the vintage sunburst model and it is real beauty!!! It has the Floyd Rose with the D-tuner and boys, it does work. I was kinda leary at first, but after a few times of using it, I can now testify. You will always get a true E, or a true D. The neck is fast and very comfortable to play. Great neck....PERIOD.

Wolfie produces a one of a kind sound. Very warm, very strong, and very responsive. I play mine through a Marshall 4100 stack with a Zoom 4040. Pickups are pretty much top of the line in my book. Quiet but ready to roar when needed. Just remember, the toggle is backwards from other guitars.

My wolfie is a a22 fret, basswood , black topped model with the floyd rose liscensed peavey locking tremolo and the ultra nifty D-tuner. It has two humbucking pickups that were custom wound to Eddie's ears. The neck is unfinished maple and feels nice and smooth. The body is a tele- les paul combo similar to the music man Van Halen model. My sales guy threw in a strap and cable which was cool. It came with a nice skb peavey case.

I got this wolfie to play mostly hard and classic rock in my cover band and It really kicks ass in most song situations. I play through a 5150 combo going through a 5150 4x12 cab with a rocktron intellifex up top and an mxr phase 90 and flanger on the floor along with a cry-baby wah and an old boss analog delay...Let me tell you something, Ive been playing for 14 years and have owned or played thru everything and Ive never been happier with my sound. The wolfie can be thick and rich or fat and sassy. The neck pickup is great to solo on and the bridge pickup will cut thru anything.I use the volume knob in place of a footswitch to change between lead and rythym tones and it sounds great. My band plays everything from "franklin's tower" to "rock and roll all nite" to scenes from an Italian restaurant" to "crazy train" and I play the whole set with Wolfie ......I think that about says it all.

The guitar came set up very well and I hpoed it would since Eddie insisted on each one being identical in set up to his own. The black finish is very nice and pretty much flawless. No nicks or blemishes. I removed the cover on the back so I could have access to the tremolo and noticed a small glimse of natural wood color amidst the black, but hey they only missed a tiny spot, and it WAS covered.

I have been gigging 3- 4 times a month for the past year and Im talking about some loud, crowded, rowdy , slam dancing places, and all Ive done is change strings before each show. Ive never had it fall off the strap. The finish is a little worn on the back from my belt buckle but that would happen regardless of the guitar. I almost never bring a backup guitar, just spare strings and a guitool. Speaking of strings, Ive used this guitar for at least 40 gigs and ive never broken one! Id say that this axe defines the term "workhorse".

The guitar has a very unique body style, similar to that of the Ernie Ball/MusicMan. It has a basswood body with a carved basswood top. It has 22 frets on a beautiful birdseye maple neck----Before buying this guitar, I asked a relative of mine who is a wood expert about the birdseye neck, and he said that birdseye is very rare, maybe 1 in every 100 maple trees will be birdseye. It has a Floyd Rose Trem bridge with a D-tuner (which kicks ass by the way!!). The neck is a 15 radius, but it feels smaller for some reason. It has a lightening fast neck---I've only been playing for 3 years and I can see a 100% increase in my speed and accuracy. It has two humbucking pickups, controlled by a three way (Les Paul style) switch--in fact the only difference is that the lead is up and the rythm is down. It has Schaller tuners on the headstock which are really easy to work with. The only minor flaw I see with tuning this guitar is that the tuners on the Floyd have a very small range. I say this because I like to tune down a half-step sometimes just to get a little "darker" tone. This makes it hard because You have to unlock the nut before tuning down a half-step. This is no biggie though. The case that came with it could have just a little more room for accessories. I got one of those EVH Wolfgang straps thrown in with mine as an extra. I got a pretty good deal on mine---the guitar, case, EVH strap, strings, and some picks for $1325 US. Not bad at all for a signature guitar from one of the Gods!!
Sound
:

The sound of this beast is wonderful if you play blues/hard rock/classic rock. I have found the tone to be very versatile if you use an EQ. I play mine through a Marshall Valvestate 40 watt combo, with a Zoom 3030 effects pedal. With a little tweaking, I have gotten tones very similar to that of both a Les Paul and a Strat, and everything in between. I passed a Les Paul up for this guitar and really wouldn't take two of them in trade for my Wolfie. The pickups are very quiet---Its kind of weird because I can tap them with my pick and barely hear it through my amp. But they sound great and are really hot when using distortion. Playing the guitar clean, I get a bell like tone similar to that of a Telecaster. I love how the harmonics just jump off of the neck---This is the only guitar that I can perform a dive-bomb with (that may not be saying much though considering my level of playing!!). The guitar really screams when gain settings are high using the "metal" distortion on my processor. I wouldn't give this guitar a ten because there are no perfect sounding guitars in my opinion, I like em all!! But given the versatility, it gets a 9.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
I see no flaws in the finish on mine. The pickups are not adjustable, but I don't care---It sounds killer out of the box. I have never played on a guitar that plays easier than this one does, while at the same time having a clear tone (no buzz). When you play mine without amplification, you hear a slight buzz due to the low action, but it doesn't come through the amp. With this setup out of the box, how could you go wrong? Unless of course you like doing things the hard way!!
Reliability/Durability
:

I would use this guitar in the toughest of gigs. It is built like a Patton tank. The strap buttons are solid, but I am considering a strap lock system just in case ($1325 is a pretty big load out of this poor boy's pocket, so I'd like to keep it mint!!). Basswood has a tendency to dent easily. The demo model I played on months before I bought mine had a "vintage" looking neck----You know, the kind that you'd expect to find on a 65 Strat' or other vintage guitar----In between the frets were dark looking. Personally, I think it adds beauty to the guitar as a whole---it looks more broken in. I would go to war with this axe!!

If it were stolen or lost, I would be in mourning for years. I love this guitar almost as much as my wife. My favorite features are the playability and pickups. Like I said before, I compared it with a Gibson Les Paul, and I wouldn't take two of them in trade for my Wolfie. Also, the fact that Eddie Van Halen endorses this guitar is enough that if the slightest chance occurs (and I mean slight) that I would want to sell it, I'd get at least 3/4 of what I paid for it. And when he dies (God forbid), I'd say the value would go up. Overall, this is a really killer guitar which is good for all levels of players--beginners and professionals alike. Let me warn you though--If you happen to go to your nearest Peavey dealer and try one out, don't say that I didn't warn you when you fall in love!!
If there is anyone out there who would like to trade either effects/amp setups or Zoom patches, or would like more info please contact me at my email.

The pickups are custom designed by Peavey and Edward Van Halen The body is basswood with a carved basswood top (gloss black finish) Body style is unique (check www.peavey.com) The neck is figured Birdseye maple (including fretboard) The bridge is a Floyd Rose with a D-tuner It has Schaller tuners. The Neck is a 15" radius. It came with a hardshell case and tools.

Obviously it has a very Van Halenish sound. Though with the neck pickup and the tone rolled off, it can do Eric Claptions "Woman Tone" quite well.
I am using it with a Peavey 5150 amp and a BOSS GT-5 effects processor.
It has a very big/fat sound. Harmonics (natural, artificial, and pinch) jump right out of the guitar.
It cost too much because I bought the guitar *very* early on when they just weren't available (gotta love supply and demand). They can be had much cheaper now (as low as $1100)

98 solid color, trem model, 22 frets, alder body with maple top. 2 Special design humbuckers with tone/volume passive controls. Unfinished maple neck with tall, narrow frets. Floyd Rose trem set for down only, non-locking Sperzels. The neck is a peculiar medium width, rounder back-not a metal neck at all, but very playable just the same. The finish is flawless. Two problems: the neck finish gets worn looking very quickly since it's a VERY thin oil finish, you can see the joints between the 3 pieces of maple that make up the top thru the paint (unfortunately tru of all solid color guitars)-why not some crack filler, Hartley? The d-tuner works as advertised, just flick it on or off, no tuning problems! Gives another dimension, although I'm just learning to use it.

I picked this up, and it played with no problems. The setup was perfect, no buzzes, low enough to move quickly. I've tried it with a 68 Bandmaster, a Boogie Mk III, a Crate VC30. I've used it effects and dry. It's very quiet with a slightly scooped mid. The rhythm pickup is full with lots of bass, the lead is sharp. The tone control works well for woman tone, I really like the sound. It sounds clear and rich clean, and doesn't muddy up when you crank it.

Hey, Eddie says he just pulls 'em off the line and plays 'em, I believe it-this guitar had the best setup and action out of the box I've ever played (and I've tried everything common, and a lot of wierd stuff). I can't find any flaws, mechanically except the above lines. I play with 9s, that's the way they come, so it's cool. I don't know how tough setting it up for 10s would be.
