I have one of the first T60s made, I believe. It has an ash body and maple neck, and the two double bar pickups that phase from humbucking to single coil. Still have the original hard case.

I have played every kind of music known to man with this guitar. I keep trying other guitars, thinking after 35 years I should play something different, but nothing else feels and sounds as good! For many years I played through a Peavey 212 Classic. Then I landed a Fender Twin and wouldn't play anything else. I guess I'm a creature of habit, but the T60 through a Twin just can't be beat.

Action: fabulous Finish: durable and sexy Flaws: the guitar has been hard to keep in tune at times. I find that it needs a visit to a good luthier every five years or so. I'm told the neck wants to "twist" a little because of the truss rod construction.

A true classic. Over the years I have tried every Gibson, Fender, and other brands, thinking I deserve a new guitar - I really thought I wanted a Les Paul. But when it comes right down to it, I know I will want my T60 for gigs.

My personal T-60 was made in 1979, although I am unclear as to which month it was made in. It is an all Patent Applied For USA-built guitar. It has 22 frets and is a solid top. The controls consist of two volume, two tone, a three-way selector, and the mystical 'Phase switch'. The pickup configuration is H/H, and I assume that they're Peavey PAF humbuckers as most of the parts featured in this guitar were patent applied for at the time of manufacture. The electronics are passive. The body is made of an extremely hard and heavy Ash, and the body finish is semi-satin polyurethane. The neck is Eastern Rock Maple and has a glossy polyurethane finish. The body style is of a Strat, the bridge is string-through-body, the tuners have "US" on the back of them and are non-locking. The neck is comparatively thin, and the scale is standard 25??". I bought it used with the factory hardshell case (rectangular version). This guitar comes equipped with many features which at the time were very ambitious and experimental in nature. The best thing about this is that none of these features cause the ultimate product to suffer as a result and all have their own importance instead of being a guitar full of useless features that either break, rob the guitar of it's tone, or rarely see regular usage.

This guitar was obviously made with Classic Rock, Blues and Country playing styles in mind. It nails all three of those styles with ease, however, the T-60 has a bit of a nasty side in that this guitar is just as perfect if not even better suited for vintage Hard Rock/Heavy Metal and Punk styles. I have used it with several amps, both solid state and tube, and haven't gotten a bad sound out of it as of yet, with the proper routine guitar setup (intonation, neck adjustments, etcetera). I use an MXR M-104, a Boss CH-1, and a Boss DD-3. The guitar has great sound with all three pedals, but especially the chorus and delay pedals. I cannot stress enough how good this guitar sounds with a chorus, even more so with the phase switch engaged and controls tweaked. This guitar can handle strong natural amp distortion and artificial distortion really well. My guitar isn't super noisy, there's an occasional click in the toggles that finds it's way into the signal, and the occasional pot crackle, but the guitar is 30 years old and honestly, the electronics are far less noisy than most current models that I've played, so these have aged rather well along with the rest of the guitar. As for it having either a 'full' sound or a 'bright' sound, the answer is both. This is where the circuitry itself comes into play: the T-60's humbuckers can function as humbuckers or as single coils, and as a result, this guitar is very versatile.

I have no idea how good the factory setup was. I was born in 1984, the guitar was made in 1979.
I will say that the two-piece top was not bookmatched, but this has not affected the tone or general aesthetic of the guitar as far as I can tell.
Other than that, I have no idea how much different the guitar I own today is as it was original from factory besides the fact that all the parts are bone stock and functional.

This guitar will not only withstand live playing, it was made for any rigor or stress that may and usually does occur on the road. The thing could literally double as a weapon and in the case of my personal guitar, may actually have, as there appears to be ages-old tiny brownish blood stains (?!) splattered on the top of the guitar that were there when I bought it. With a T-60, this theory is entirely feasible. The hardware does seem like it would last, as it has for 30 years, although I have read numerous places that the toggles seem to break often, although mine haven't and I have done some rather abusive things to them. The strap buttons are solid, but it probably wouldn't hurt to put a set of strap locks on the guitar unless you're trying to keep it bone stock. This guitar is very dependable and I would tour a lifetime and hand this down to someone for them to tour a lifetime with it without a backup.

I have never contacted Peavey about this guitar, though I have talked to Chip Todd, the guitar's designer, on the T-60's 'unofficial' website and he is a very cool guy and freely shares his own personal knowledge about the T-60 and experiences with anyone willing to take the information in. Chip Todd even goes so far as to explicitly explain a great deal of the manufacturing processes and techniques he used during the production of the T-60 and also his current models.
Peavey is usually pretty good about customer support, or have been in my personal experience in the past.

I have been playing for the better part of my life, and I also own a 1997 Korean Epiphone Les Paul Custom I bought from a friend who was cleaning out gear he owned for better gear, and the LP honestly does not hold a candle in terms of quality and tone to the T-60. If it were stolen, I'd probably freak completely out since it's my favorite guitar and was also given to me as a personal gift. I would probably replace it eventually but would try everything in my power legally and physically to get the one I have now back in my possession. I love almost everything except for the clunky neck heel (which Chip Todd has remedied in a 'custom' set-neck version of the T-60 that he built outside of Peavey) and a constantly loose jack. My favorite feature is definitely the Phase switch. I sometimes wish that the un-railed 'toaster' pickups were just a little hotter, but the pickups definitely aren't a weak point about the guitar regardless.

I play easy listening finger picking moody music mostly, and sometimes a bit of rock.
I have a Peavey Delta Blues amp.
It is not noisy, even in the single coil mode - much quieter than the T-15/patriot's delicious "SUPER FERRITE" single coils, but with different character ... not a criticism.
The guitar has a huge range of sounds ... the neck pickup with volume and tone on full is lovely for clean stuff, and you just go from there.
Can be very bright to very dark - full range with the single/hum circuitry and 2V and 2T pots, and phase switch.
No dislikes - this is the best guitar I have ever owned.

:

Used, so I can't speak to the factory setup ... but it is VERY adjustable.
The glue holding the 5 or so pieces of wood in the body together seems to be a little more visible than I would have expected, and the original tone pots scratch slightly when going from hum to single coil (at about 7 or 8). That's it for issues ... and those aren't issues.
The neck is amazing!
The guitar is over 25 years old and - in this case at least - this guitar is in almost new condition.

I've been playing 3 years.
I have a Peavey Delta Blues tube amp with the 15" speaker (coincidentally a pretty great acoustic amp too!)
I love the versatility and durability of the T-60, and even the look of it.
It leaves me wanting nothing more as far as the guitar is concerned, but I wish the ABS case had more storage compartments like the T-15 ABS cases do ... but it has as much storage space as any other similar case.
I would DEFINITELY buy another T-60. If you get a chance to buy one, buy it. Expect to pay $300 - $500, depending on it's condition.
You may want to ask some of these questions if you are buying it on eBay or something and can't see the guitar first:
1) Is the neck straight? Any buzzing, dead spots, or ???fretting out????
2) Do the frets show any signs of wear?
3) Are there any dings, dents, or scratches anywhere on the guitar? If so, where?
4) Do all the electronics, pots, and switches work OK?
5) Is there anything non functional on the guitar at all?
6) Have any modifications been made to the instrument?
7) Is the hardware chrome rusted, pitted, or bubbling?
8) Are the pickup rings, pickguard, or other plastic parts cracked?
9) Are there any cracks on the neck, body, fretboard, or neck joint?
10) Does the tremelo work OK (if applicable)
And thank them for taking the time to answer your questions!
Good luck

1978 Model t-60 I bought it in 1980 from a Music store. It was used as a trade in on a new guitar. I have owned and played it for 29 years. I did add a Seymour Duncan D+ as a 3rd Bridge Humbucker. It really was not necessary but I was young and had to mess with it. The originals are very good pick-ups. I paid at that time $ 210 which was a lot to me then. However over time I have been through plenty of different brands including Gibson Les Pauls, Strats, Deans, etc...and the only one I never got feed up with is the T-60. It is a little heavy but a feather weight compared to a LP! It really is comfortable to play for hours on end. I have been at gigs where it become the novelty and all the guitar players wanted to play with it. I have had numerous offers but I am very glad I never let it go.

This is a great sounding guitar. It has more versatility then anything I have ever played. Crank it and it will rock. You can adjust the tone and get it as smooth as glass. Sustain is fantastic. The tones you can get purely from playing with your own fingers instead of external boxes is excellent.

The feel and action of the neck is probably the primary reason I would never part with it. It is hands down the best neck around. It is very similar in size and feel to a Stratocaster but a little less round. I have had Strats and Les Pauls and this one fits somewhere in between but closer to the Strat. The tuners are exceptional and rarely need readjusting.

Excellent - 30+ years of wear and tear and the thing is indestructable.
Knock a LP off a stand and its $$ at the shop to re-set. You can practically drop the T-60 off the stage, pick it up and keep jamming away.

I bought used from a local music store including original hardshell case. Some gal owned it, took some lessons then stuck it in a closet.Almost new condition... slapped on new strings did neck, bridge & pick up adjustment & it plays like a dream. No string rattle & action is low like I want. Haven't decided but I might upgrade tuners. Stays in tune pretty well but I'm a stickler on tuning. If I do upgrade I will store stock ones for sure.

Built like a tank, 27 years old & not a bit if noise from any of the pots. If you can't depend on this guitar you can't depend on any of them. Tele twang to Les Paul... you can get all of the needed sounds if you know how to use your equipment.

My T-60 was made in 1980-81, based on the serial number and info from an online T-60 fan site. Natural ash. two blade pickups with the cool tone controls that allow the p'ups to run as single coils or humbuckers when the tone is below 6. THere's also a switch that puts the pickups out of phase. Very cool. No vibrato.

I play in a band that covers rock and roll and some alt country from six decades. I took this guitar to an outdoor gig and it rocked all day long. Easy to play, good tones, played well with a blues driver pedal and my fender amp. Looks cool too. It will suit just about any style except possibly jazz - for which a hollow body still rules.

For a 27 year old instrument that appears to have been used by a real player, mine's in good shape. A little fingerboard wear, a little belt scuffing. I like the worn in vibe. I sprayed some cleaner to get rid of crackling in the pots, which worked. Haven't taken off the pickguard to look under the hood. That involves unscrewing close to a dozen screws -- not ideal.

The T-60 is a solid chunk of wood that needs no babying. It was meant to be played hard. Peavey's philosophy, based on what I viewed and read online, is that working musicians need quality instruments at a fair price, and this guitar is that. I would have spent as much of more for a made in China product without the heft or features. THis guitar has cured my Strat jones pretty much entirely. No I wouldn't use it without a backup, but so far it's been no trouble.

I've been playing guitar for years, in a band for about 8 - a late bloomer. I have a dozen guitars of various kinds and costs, though I specialize in $300-500 second hand stuff. This is, hands down, the coolest guitar for the money in my collection -- though my 3 pickup Harmony Rocket is very close. The Peavey is solid, sounds great, and has innovative features you can't get on most stock Fenders and Gibsons unless you want to spend more by a factor of 5 or more. I looked down on Peavey guitars, but before you buy a Mexican Strat, you should find one of these in good shape and if you can snag it for $300-400 do it. You'll get a Made in the USA guitar with more character than Fender is offering at 3 times the price. Plus, you acquire the product of Hartley Peavey, a guy who -- as near as I can tell -- is an authentic innovator in the Leo Fender mold.

I bought this guitar used 8 months ago and my excitement has not slipped a bit. Mine is a Black 78 slab body with a patent applied for on the headstock. I love the neck. This is one of my main gig guitars now and Ive yet to break a string. Some guitars are prone for string breakage and some are not. This is not. Mine came with a wonderful hardshell case that still functions perfectly. One point deducted because of the massive weight.

I Love the sounds I can get out of this guitar. It took me two months to really figure all the sounds it can conjure. Twangy country runs, Searing blues, clean chord phrases. This is one guitar that can do it all. I am amazed at the price I paid for the quality and tonal variety this guitar has. The phase switch in middle position in phase is thick and full, very acoustic sounding. Out of phase mimics a depressed wah sound. The phase switch seems more pronounced when one of the pickups is set to humbucking and the other to single coil.
I play through a variety of amps. Peavey Blues Classic, '81 Peavey Bandit, '64 Gibson Falcon and a microcube for rehersal and fun.
This guitar really deserves a 10 here

This guitar is just so so good. Features are fantastic. It stays in tune and sounds great for soloing or rhythm guitar. It does the strat thing as well as my Bill Nash guitar. It also does the les paul thing if you want to cover Zeppelin or GNRoses. The electronics and design of the T-60 were way ahead of their time. Big thick, fat maple/ash tone with sustain. A blessing of a guitar at an unbelievable price.

I have a custom Heritage 535 w/bigsby (made by the old gibson workers in the original gibson factory). The Heritage cost me 3000 dollars and is an unbelievable guitar. The Peavey T-60 sounds just about as good and has more features and cost me only 300 dollars. Incredible. I am in awe of this thing at such a value. Mine is white and about 25 years old. I love this guitar as much as my Bill Nash strat and my Heritage 535. Those two guitars cost me almost 5 thousand dollars. The T-60 equals them both. I cannot believe this guitar doesn't cost more. Perhaps all other guitars need to cost less because this sounds as good as much much more expensive guitars.

1981 Peavey T-60. Made in the U.S.A. by my recent online acquaintance Chip Todd. This is probably one of the most "actually usable" versatile solid-body electrics of the past 30 years.
This was made by Peavey Corp. in Meridian, MS in 1981. It has a Bi-laminated bolt on maple neck/board w/adjustable truss rod & micro-tilt adjustment, medium-jumbo nickel-silver frets, 6 per-side tuners, 25.5" scale, double-cut away, string-thru poplar body w/ "fire-engine" red finish, 2 special designed "rail" humbuckers, 2 volume/2 tone configuration with 3-way switch as well as mini-toggles for "phase" and for "coil-splitting" and a special "molded" Peavey hard-shell case... Again, all made in the USA.

This instrument suits any music style really. When I look at the guitar and play, it really lends itself to funk of all things as well as blues/rock. I currently use it with an all-tube Peavey Delta Blues 2x10" amplifier. I also occasionally use a solid-state Fender Twin 2x12". I use Visual Sound pedals only! The guitar is wonderful... even in single-coil mode the guitar is very quiet. Throw some massive distortion to it or crystal clear clean... it performs wonderfully. The sounds are very versatile...they are all over the place really. The "in-phase/out of phase" options are great as well. I can make this guitar mimic that of a hollow body. The instruction manual even claims this feat as well!!! i really have no qualms with the guitar. It sounds and plays wonderfully. I love the "coil-tapping" circuitry! The pickups are actually tap-able via your volume knobs. Anything above 7 puts you in single coil mode and anything below 7 is full humbucking. It is like a TBX tone control in many ways... just about 10 years earlier in terms of innovation.

I had to do some semblance of a setup upon receiving. The action as well as the neck-tilt needed some tweaking and the pickups needed to be brought down considerably. The action is to the 1978 Peavey factory specs. 5/64" on the bass side at the 12th fret and 4/64" on the treble side at the 12th fret. The relief is set at .012" and it is setup with .009's. It feels pretty slinky but, certainly not lacking in tone or in girth. It can thin out at the "flick of a switch" and "beef up" just the same. It all looks great and is made with the utmost precision... this guitar at the time was a groundbreaking feat... being made almost entirely on a CNC router. According to Guitar Player magazine, this guitar defined one of the top 100 greatest moments in guitar history...in terms of production/construction.

The T-60 is an institution really. These guitars are like polyester and cockroaches. When the end of the world comes I do believe all the cockroaches will get all decked out in their polyester suits and grab their T-60's and rock us all out of extinction. The T-60 is a testament to what the american worker is capable of and what the USA used to be oh so re-knowned for. It is 1970's innovation at it's peak that has more than stood the test of time.

You can always contact Chip Todd on the T60 forum. He is an extremely nice man and very very helpful. He is the designer of this guitar and still very proud of this accomplishment. He still plays T-60's to this day. In all honesty, if a product is built right the first time... there is no need for a warranty. This is just that. In terms of in-destructability, the Peavey T-60 runs a good race against the Steinberger GL-series guitars of yesteryear. The resources are out there and the folks on the forum are wonderful people and very passionate about this instrument. There is really no need for the Peavey company to get involved... although they are quite good themselves in terms of tracing serial numbers and production dates, ect. They are just an e-mail away.

Fantastic value! Hands down. I don't know where else you can pickup a solidly built, versatile, easy playing, great sounding, USA made solid-body w/case for under 4 bills. If you know where I can find anything better feel free to let me know... but, you will be searching along time. Even if can fulfill this criteria it will most likely be a one-time fluke.
My only wish is that it had a tremelo. If it had a wonderful 80's era tremelo it will eradicate the Stratocaster.

Look, first thing: it's American-made, by people who really knew how to build guitars in Meridian, Mississippi! Mine was built in the early 80's, pure vintage USA quality! This isn't one of the latest off-the-assembly-line, crappy woods and parts, made by slave laborers in sweat shops JUNK guitars coming out of a lot of places in Asia most commonly found today at a price most can afford. That says a lot right there.
Mine is a 25 year old guitar that looks like it could be five years old owned by a home hobbyist who never learned to play. The feel is SOLID. I love the thin maple neck because I have small hands. The neck is fast, the action is low. I was thinking about knocking one point down because it lacks locking tuners, but these stock Peavey tuners hardly ever go out of tune. Obviously, the stock tuners are of high quality. So the point value will remain at 10.
This guitar has two very nice humbucker pickups, both of which can be split to single-coil with a simple turn of the tone knobs. Plus, the pickup configuration can be changed with the phase switch. This offers a wide range of tonal options that would require multiple guitars of other brands without these features. I like the look of the single blade pickups too. They are solidly installed and don't rattle around.
The finish on the black body is very good. Most dudes prefer black guitars. This one has not faded nor chipped over the years. I like the Fender Strat style head with all the tuners on top. It's just more convenient and less awkward to tune. The Peavey bridge is very solid and has no rust, plus it's easy to adjust. The solid volume and tone controls are quiet and smooth with good pots and wiring. The cord jack is recessed into the body, shielded and quiet. The bolt-on neck is light, completely unwarped, well-fitted and firm. The frets are nearly perfect. I can't see nor feel any fret wear. The body is somewhat oversized and solidly heavy, but I like that; especially combined with the feather light neck. It adds to the wonderful sustain of this guitar.

Okay, so it has tons of cool features not found even on most of today's guitars. But what's all that worth if it sounds like crap? Well, the tones on this guitar sound as good as the guitar sounds in print. I think people here have done a very good job of describing the tones and versatility of this baby. The cleans, either pick, set to single coils, absolutely sparkle. I can chicken pick jangly country or clang new wave and punk classics by bands like The Clash and the Police. The neck pickup set on humbucker is warm and punchy. Perfect for jazz or driving rock rhythms. The bridge pickup set to humbucker is brighter and more trebly and does very well with 80's heavy metal. I don't know how it would do with new thrash metal, so I won't give it a full 10 for sound. But a 9 speaks to this guitar's versatility and genuinely professional range of beautiful tones.
I agree that the Peavey T-60 is a hybrid of a Fender Strat and a Gibson Les Paul. I love that, two guitars in one. Actually, I'd say it's 3-in-1 because I can get mine to sound like a Fender Telecaster in the bridge position on single coil. The ability to play sparkly clean is very handy when playing through amp modellers so commonly found on today's amps and software recording systems. And yet, the humbuckers have all of the attitude and punchy, raw bravado required by most of today's brutal rockers.
The phase switch really broadens the tonal range -- I've even made it sound like I'm playing through an AM radio, which will come in handy on some recording sessions.

As said, I love the action, quality and setup. My action is low -- just enough where it generates the slightest fret buzz, but not enough buzz to be picked up when amplified. Pickup placement is perfect and doesn't get in the way of picking and palm muting. The bridge isn't ideal for palm muting but it works.

As said, this beeotch is over 25 years old but could pass for less than a couple years old! All the parts are stock -- and they all function flawlessly. This is a working man's guitar because it's reliable, playable and versatile. I would confidently do a small gig with it without a backup and still be able to do a variety of popular covers on a good amp without fear of malfunction. The solid feel of the Peavey T-60, the perfectly machined steel parts, and the elegant and soft, smooth, comfortable neck all give me a rock-hard boner.

I haven't dealt with them but their reputation is stellar. I've emailed a lot of amp and guitar companies. Most just ignore emails, others take at least several days to reply. That pisses me off. So I dig hearing that other people have received excellent service from Peavey. Plus, they're an American company based in the USA so we can just drive (or fly) right on over and give 'em a piece of our minds if they give us any hassle! ;)

I can't believe the deal I made on this AMERICAN MADE, HIGH QUALITY, HIGHLY VERSATILE, VINTAGE electric guitar. I've never owned a high end guitar, I've searched for tone with low-end guitars for a long time. Even at the price I paid, I feel like I finally own a high-end electric guitar. I've played new and vintage Pauls and Strats that didn't sound as good, nor play as comforably, as my T-60. I can't believe what these are currently selling for. That must be because so many were sold when they were manufactured in the mid-70s to mid-80s and because they've withstood so well through time. And, it's just because the word isn't out. I agree with others here -- this may be the most under-valued, overlooked electric guitar out there. I paid less than most of the new junk that's on store shelves today made in Third World sweatshops with not even a fraction of the high-end features on this guitar made in the good ole' USA. I highly recommend picking one up if you can, I think word is going to get out and the value is going to skyrocket. I feel fortunate that I landed a deal on mine before it does. I'm sure as hell keeping this sexy girl no matter what.

Solid body/2 cut aways. 2 humbucking pick ups that can be taped too single coil using the 2 tone controls(from 10 to 7=single coil.from 7 down=humbucking) 2 vol. 1-pickup selector switch and a phase reversal switch. Very this but sturdy neck. Super chromed hardware. Mine is a 1978 and the hardware still looks new.

This is a universal sounding guitar. It has a solid sound regarless of the electronic set up. It sounds expensive compared too most electric out there today. It goes fron chicken picken ice pick too almost a Kenny Burrell smoothness. I can't think of any guitar that does what it does so completely. Even in single coil mode, its very quiet. I like this guitar a lot and I play it frequintly on stage. With the right amp,it will compete with any guitar regardless of price. The sound is that good.

With its thin neck and its placements of the pickups and low action, it cant be beat. I bought this guitar used and have been using it now for almost 10 years. It had 10s when I got it and I put 9s on it so I had too do just minor ajustments. I can't beleive this guitar has stood up so well over the years and I find when I start too play my other guitars, I always go back too the t-60-wonderful!No flaws and stays in tune better then any guitar I own. Even the frets don't seem too ware out.

If it were stolen or lost, I would buy another as quikly as possible. Its strong. It sounds wonderful. It plays like a dream and its fast. Yes it is a little heavy but I have a certain Gibson-- -- custom thats about the same weight. And My t-60 is far better in my personl opinion.

This is a follow up review on what is starting to become a legendary guitar in my collection. A natural 1978 Peavey T 60. Since there have been so many prior reviews on its design, setup and details, will skip that. I got this in a pawn shop about ten years ago. I fixed the broken phase switch tip with a replacement. Along with its rectangular heavy duty molded plastic case, it has been on countless gigs since then. Because of its unique circuitry allowing the two pickups to change from humbuckers to single coil and the possible blended every thing in between, its sonic capabilities are truly endless. It is built heavy duty with no cheap parts. It's metal nut adds to its unique tone. The T60 is not a one trick pony guitar. Rather, its design, build, toughness and low cost combine to make this a sought after instrument. IMHO, after buying/searching/selling many guitars over the last fifteen years, I can't think of a better bargain.
Sound
:

AAAhh the sound! Because of the materials, there combination, various switches, unique circuitry changing the pickup sound from thin single coil to thick humbucker tones, with countless variations in between, this guitar wins hands down with its multi voice. I have other quality guitars to compare with the T 60. I would categorize the quiet tone as bright, long sustain, can get sparkly, rich, growly in full humbucker mode, makes my solid state amp sound more like a tube amp.
It is strung with .10's so it allows string bends easily. It is a heavy guitar, but I can hack it.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
My first year issue is natural wood, the neck is glossy on all sides. The frets are low and wide, thin neck. All hardware is first class and heavily made. Nothing dainty here. Despite its 25 years, this guitar shows little wear. The large rectangular plastic case cushions the guitar well and it also has a couple of large pockets. I would say that the looks/design is not elegant like a PRS, for instance, but I can't see any second rate materials or workmanship.
Reliability/Durability
:

I have played this outside and inside, smoky, high humidity, subjected to very hot and freezing temps while stored in the van, etc. It is built to withstand the rigors of gigging. Natural finish is very durable. I rotate five guitars for my jobs. I take two guitars, subject to my mood, type of situation. The T 60 is able to handle any type of venue, and music choice. Replaced strap buttons with strap locks for added peace of mind. Never have gone to a paying gig without a backup guitar. About once every four or so gigs, I break a string. With a backup guitar, I switch, without a backup, you would have to stop and replace the string. The audience becomes impatient.

Learned to play in 1963. I have had a variety of amps, guitars. I now regularly rotate a Heritage Prospect semi hollow, Gibson Les Paul Jr Lite, Robin Artisan, Fender 52 reissue Telecaster, and the Peavey T60. Amps are a Roland JC 120 and Carvin SX 300. Sometimes interject a Line Six Pod 2.0 between the guitar and amp. I really like the sonic tones, unique pickup circuitry, heavy duty construction, low price and American inginuity/construction. This guitar is fun fun fun to play with quick action to boot. I play classic rock and the blues, which are no problem for the T 60.

Wow! Quite possibly one of the most underrated guitars of all time. It is the cross pollonization of a Stratocaster and a Les Paul. It weighs a ton- has a heavy, balanced Les Paul feel with a Stratocaster type neck. Equipped with special Lawrence Humbuckers, three way toggle, two way phase switch, 21 fret, passive electronics, bolt on neck, jumbo frets.. all the specs have been covered in previous posts. It is a splendid guitar! Mine is tobacco burst with a black pickguard and maple neck. A 1982, I believe- complete with adoring "chainsaw" case. I think the body is ash? Made in the USA!

I think Peavey gets an unfair rap because of the basic affordability of their products. The consensus of Peavey is generally that they are a second rate company. Not true. While the majority of my collection is Fender/Gibson, I have huge respect and admiration for the artistry and quality of Peavey. This guitar is the sum of first rate craftsmanship and ingenuity. If you were to juxtapose this instrument to what Fender and Gibson were producing in the late 70s-early 80s, this guitar is superior in many ways. Not the mass produced, consumed guitar, but rather a diamond in the rough. Please read the previous reviews here. They are what influenced me to buy this guitar.

Mine has a nice black finish, a black pickguard, and black and silver blade pickups (apparently this was a bit rarer than the non bladed ones).
The pickups are two humbuckers that can be coiltapped and you can get a tone of tones out of them. They were designed for peavey by Bill Lawrence who is a famed pickup maker who made pickups for many famous artists such as Dean Dimebag.
It has a lot of cool little features. First off the nut is some kind of metal which I've noticed adds a lot of sustain and bite. It's also a string thru body and has a really heavy thick bridge which adds sustain as well.
The neck is bolt on which adds a bit of a bite to the tone. You could say the sustain is compromised but it is easily compensated by the thick bridge and the string thru body. It sustains as much as my 78 paul! I kid you not.
Mine has a 22 fret maple neck with black clay dot inlays with medium-jumbo frets. The neck is overally quite fast. It feels very similar to a strat so if you like fenders this guitar will feel great to you!
Overall it has a lot of nice touches and an overall good feel. If the neck had been set or neck thru I would have given it a ten though.

Fantastic
Distorted Untapped-A nice bluesy wail. It is chunky yet bluesy at the same time. Listen to the Dr. Feelgood riff by Motely Crue to sort of get what I'm saying. Heavy yet with a lot of soul. (From what I hear though the non blade pickups are quieter so they might not be as chunky as mine) It's not quite heavy enough for metallica but can do most metal fine. Also the neck has a nice sweet child o mine tone. If you never heard that by god look it up.
Distorted Tapped-Very nice. Quieter but has a bit of a bite to it that humbuckers don't have. It sounds like a cross between a tele and a strat. Not as thick as a strat not as thin as a tele. The bridge has a Man on the Silver Mountain by Rainbow tone to it. Neck has a purple haze by Hendrix sound to it.
Clean Untapped-Surprisingly good for a humbucker. It has a lot of clarity for a double coil. Almost sounds like a single coil except without the quack. Think the Knockin On Heaven's Door cover by Guns N' Roses.
Clean Tapped-Wonderful. Very stratlike. Melodic and glassy. A little thinner than a strat though but you couldn't call it "thin" it's just right.
Overall for a 250$ guitar to get tones like this is fantastic. Definetly a 10.

Overall best value I have gotten out of ANY guitar. Sounds just as good as my 78 Les Paul if not better and it's more durable and lighter. Not only that it was 250$ compared to the nearly 2000$ I spent on the 78 paul.

My T-60 is a 1979 model, according to Bobby, the guitar-playing sales guy at Bibb Music (Macon,Georgia)who I bought it from, on consignment ($250,with the original case).Natural satin (?)finish ash body, maple neck. The two tone knobs, two volume knobs, the 3-way tone switch and the phase switch are industrial grade and will apparently last forever. The maple "C" neck is fast, smooth and the action is almost identical to my 1999 Fender Stratocaster. The heavily-chromed bridge reminds me of the interior finish on a 1966 Plymouth Fury 2 I owned years ago.It was a tank, too.I have to give it a 10 on the features because they are solid, dependable and,to my experience, rather unique.

I guess that you can describe my style and 36 years of playing experience as rock, country, jazz and blues. The T-60 sounds astounding, for just about any musical style. The only problem with the sound is the fact that I can't seem to stop monkeying around with the phase switch; endless tone possibilities.I amp through a Peavey Transtube 110 EFX and a Fender Blues Junior. The T-60 produces great tone through the "clean" toned Fender amp,and it has already cozied up with my Peavey amp.

The rather skilled guitarist/salesman who I bought it from at Bibb Music (I still can't believe that he sold it,even if he did have 15 guitars)has owned it for about 15 years. He set it up himself, when he bought it.I find the set-up to be perfect, for my playing. Except for a couple of very shallow, short dents on the back of the neck,I can't find and finish flaws, and this guitar is 27-28 years old.

I play country, classic rock, funk, some jazz, blah-blah. After seeing the high scores on the sound of the T-60, I had to buy one off of E-bay to see what the excitement was all about. This is the baby of a Teleacaster, Les Paul marriage, to say the least, plus much more. I've owned both, and could have saved myself a lot of money buying this instead. Sweet when played clean, has bell like tone. Love the sound thru my chorus pedal. Distorted, well that sounds good, too. I don't particularly like the bridge pickup sound, too thin, so I usually play the neck pickup. I keep the tone around midway, blending h/b with s/c. After decades of playing bars I only play in church now. In one church I use a Peavey Classic VT tube amp and at the other church I play thru a Crate 212, solid state. Sounds good thru either.

Mine is a white 1980 model with black pickguard and maple neck (the best looking of all T-60's in my opinion). I bought it on EBay in March. Two volume and two tone knobs, phase switch, and 3-way p/u selector switch. The two p/u's are basicallly humbuckers that transform to single coils by using the tone knobs. Came w/ original case. Made in the US of A.

I have been playing mostly blues and alt country for 30 years and this guitar performs both beautifully. I have never played a guitar that gets more quality tonal options. The way the phase switch, p/u's and tone knobs work together to get all sorts of voices and textures is unbelievable. On most guitars, tone knobs are tone suckers, but on a T-60 they are tone enhancers. I have many other guitars including a tele, strat, les paul, etc., thus I comparitively speak to quality contestants. Played through my tube and solid state amps this guitar is nothing short of amazing sounding. It's robbery, and I took advantage of it! Blues great Johnn Copeland played a T-60 just like mine and captured great tone on many studio and live albums. The T-60 can be used for any kind of music, clean, twang, clean blues, chunky, crunchy, searing blues, rock, you name it. The only down side is that the wide variety of sounds is so damn expansive, it's sometimes a distraction to me since I can't keep my fingers off the tone knobs and selector switches! It's too much fun ! Way too much.

The Ebay seller misrepresented its playability and action, but thanks to a superb setup job at Smith Music (Chris) in Quincy,IL, this baby plays like a charm. It's got a small neck that fits my hand perfectly and a comfortable body shape. Other reviewers have complained that the T-60 is too heavy, but I don't find this true as it's lighter than most of my electrics, basically average. The body has only minor scratches and has held up very well for 26 years. 10 gauge strings work well on it.

For a rather complex guitar in terms of wiring and exterior hardware, I am impressed with its durability. Pots are clean sounding and controls move smoothly. The pick guard it kinda waivy, as it dips where all the screws were too tight over the years (I also have a '79 T-40 and the pickguard is perfectly flat likely due to better care and looser screws).

Never talked to them. The best place to learn more about the T-60 is the T-60 website sponsored by a fan. You can date your guitar here too. You can download a T-60 owners manual from Peavey's website.

I want to buy another T-60 someday, and I recommend you do the same before the price of these goes up. Definitely worthy of a re-issue from Peavey. C'mon guys! I will never understand why players insist on spending $1,000 to $2,000 or more on a guitar (probably for the name on the headstock), when great axes like this can be had for $300 or less! Don't bother wasting your $$$ on cheap & crappy Fender imports while trying to half-ass emulate the look and sound of your hero's. Instead be inspired by the innovative vibe of a T-60, and create your own thang. I am a believer !

Mine is a 1979 Peavey T60 made in the good old US of A. I bought it brand spankin new and it still is one of my favorite guitars. It has all the original electronics and everything still works just fine. I have the natural Ash satin finish with a Maple neck.

I love the versatility of the guitar, having set it up the last fifteen years as my slide guitar. I usually tune it to open 'A' for the southern rock style I play with my band but it has a great gutsy delta blues sound in open 'D' tuning. I played it mostly through a '84 Peavey Chorus VTX series amp which matched up perfectly but I recently purchased a Fender CyberDeluxe and the guitar sounds even more incredible. The phase shifter which puts the dual humbuckers out of phase to give you that single coil sound couldn't be better throught the Fender amp. But it's still not a Fender. That's ok for me because I really just dig the raw dirty humbuckers for slide.

Right out of the box it played fine and I never had a problem with the action. Since it was a new product from Peavey at the time, they seemed to pay attention to all the details. Par for the course for Peavey, in my opinion. Like everyone else has mentioned, the weight and sheer size of the body took a little getting used to since I was playing a Gibson SG at the time.

This is where the guitar shined, I've been playing it professionally since I bought it in '79 with only general cleaning and string changes. In fact the other guys in my band call it the 'Peavasaurus' because no matter how many other guitars I try, My T60 is at every show and ready to work. One thing that impresses me to this day is the minimal amount of tuning it reguires. I realize the quality of strings has a lot to do with it but the guitar is rock solid as far as durability is concerned. For the longest time it was my only guitar before I decided to play slide on it in open tuning, I could depend on it that much. The finish is showing some wear, mostly on top of the body where my right arm rubs it but we're talking literally thousands of hours of playing time. The neck is still in great shape having just a fret dressing ten years ago.

I've never had a lot of need for their help so I don't have much to offer in this section. And I've used and abused a lot of Peavey equipment over the decades, from guitar amps to PA amps. Road worthy with a capital 'R'.

I think I answered most of these questions in the previous sections but I will say that I'd buy another in a heartbeat if it was ever lost or stolen. My show workhorse now is an early Strat Squire but I still play my T60 for a dozen or so songs that require slide and I'm always messing with new tunes on it. I love the sound I get now that I'm going through the Fender CyberDluxe, it's very distinct. If not for the weight, it would be the perfect starter guitar for a serious young student since it needs little attention to play. As a side note, I passed up buying a very pretty white laquered 3 pickup Gibson SG for the T60 and I don't regret it for a minute.

I'll spare everyone the same feature set that that's been listed on here a dozen times over already. Mine is a 79 model (thanks Peavey for the info)in Sunburst color. I've had it for going on 8 years now. It's the standard 2 Humbucker configuration. I'm still not convinced I like having the coil tap on the tone knobs (I dislike it on my t-40 bass).
Also unlike the T-40, the out of phase switch on the guitar is actually useful. When you've got it on and use a phaser effect pedal, you REALLY get a sweet, swirling tone. Not like the standard "jet engine" phaser tone, but a different multi-layered howl. Nice. The phase switch also adds a nice hollow sound to chords and even fingerstyle with a clean tone.

This thing is perfect for what we needed it for, which is melodic hardcore (clean verses, heavily distorted choruses with a heavy bottom sound, and a blues-based solo thrown into most songs).
When I switched from guitar to bass, my brother confiscated this guitar and used it onstage. Impressive considering he chose it over his custom Jackson SL-1 (with a Duncan Distortion Humbucker in the bridge and Duncan Hot Rails in the neck and mid positions) He used his Jackson in the studio for soloing because the Hot Rails absolutely scream on solos and the Jackson has a Floyd on it. But for the Rhythm work it was all Peavey, and this was also the guitar he trusted more onstage (Floyd trems snap strings like it's going out of style).
Don't expect it to quack like a Strat or have the same Distortion sound as a Les Paul (in my opinion, Les Pauls are the most overrated sounding guitars ever, anyway). It also does not "squeal" like an EMG-equipped ESP or Jackson, but it will nearly match an EMG61 in bottom end.
It has a distinct sound that fits well in any style of music and is perfect for heavier styles.
I play a lot of classical fingerstyle and since I've sold all my acoustic guitars, I'll play this clean through my bass amp and the tone is nearly tear-inducing. Not exactly "glassy," not exactly "pristine" but an outstanding, sweet and smooth ring that I absolutely love.

I bought it at a a Pawn Shop, and it was set up perfectly. It really speaks to the quality of the build that only minor setup was needed to get it to hold its tune and sound great after so many years.
Only complaint is the gloss neck. I'm picky about that, though, and sand the finish off all my necks and tung oil them. Adding a satin feel to any Peavey guitar is just wrong. STRAIGHT BUTTA.

ABSOLUTELY NOBODY TOUCHES PEAVEY IN THIS REGARD. Period.
It's now 27 years old. The volume pots are scratchy (common with this era Peavey), we have worn the finish off parts of the fretboard and some of the screws had to be replaced because they were rusting out, but it still plays and sounds excellent without a single fret buzz or deadspot anywhere on the neck.
The super thick finish takes TONS of abuse. When you look real close at the finish on mine, you can see all the nicks and abuse it has taken, but this thing was meant to take abuse.

I bought this guitar years ago based on aesthetics alone. It really looks cool with the big rounded shape, and I'm glad I bought it now. If it were ever stolen I don't know if I would buy it again or get a Peavey Predator or Carvin Bolt, as I don't play guitar full time and those have faster necks. I do know my brother borrows it all the time and is considering selling his $1100 Jackson and just permanently "borrowing" this from me.
When we stopped playing out, I took this back from my brother and it sits in the corner of my son's bedroom, right next to my T-40 bass. When I'm noodling on the bass and want to figure out a guitar part, I can pull it out of the case and KNOW that it will be in tune, play well, and sound good even through my practice amp. I would take it back up on stage without hesitation.
I've been playing off and on for about ten years now, mainly bass, and I am a diehard Peavey fan because of equipment like this. It's great when the garage sale/pawn shop finds that we use as starter instruments compete with and eventually overshadow the "better" equipment we eventually upgrade to.
This guitar is great for hard rock/metal/punk and even country, pop, and blues, as it gets excellent distortion that's thick in the ass end and clean tones that ring like a brass bell. It would be adequate at Jazz as well, though in that particular regard there are much better tonal options out there.
It doesn't sustain as long as some guitars, but it stays in tune and its unique looks are part of the overall appeal.
There really is no better value in terms of tough, good sounding gear for the money than older Peavey stuff.

I play rock and blues. Pink Floyd to Stevie Ray Vaughn, this guitar covers the spectrum with ease. My setup, in my mind, is fairly basic. A blackface Fender Twin Reverb, Yamaha FX-900 effects processor and a Charlie Stringer Blues Bawl wah pedal. The T-60 is an exceptionally well thought out musical instrument. The versatility of this guitar is endless. There is no noise from this guitar in any of the pick-up configurations. The sound capabilities range from Fender to Gibson. I would like to have seen this made with an optional whammy bar but I have other guitars that fill the bill quite nicely. I don't believe one guitar will satisfy all of your requirments so hence I have 15.

I purchased this guitar off eBay. It was ready to go right out of the box and no modifications were necessary. Pick it up and play. This is where I was impressed. 25 year old guitar that virtually looks to be 2 years old at the most! Peavey built this guitar to last and spared no expense to do so. Action, fit & finish is perfect for me. Stays in tune, fast as lightning and looks like new. If one has the opportunity to acquire a T-60, don't hesitate to snatch up a good one. There is no way you will ever be disappointed.

On a high dollar ($300 retail) digital scale legal for trade are the following:
Takamine GZ-300; 8lbs 8oz
Fender Strat; 8lbs 14.5oz
Dillion LP600GT; 8lbs 15oz
Peavey T-60; 8lbs 6oz
I hope this puts to rest the weight of this guitar. It is very comfortable to play for a long time. Never mind what the girlie men have to say. These numbers are accurate

I play everything in the rock region through a fairly bad amplifier(it's so bad i won't even name it, but i don't have the money to upgrade as of yet)and even though the amp is crap the guitar still manages to sound good.
It does what it does with a rather bassy sound but I like that. The best treble sound comes out with the bridge pup selected and tone at about 7, but is still bottom heavy. I say don't buy this guitar if you don't like your bottom end because your trebly options are limited.
If you like heavy metal, this guitar will make you happy, the thump it produces is earth shaking.
Maybe try playing it through a amp with no bottom end, who knows what that might sound like.
The infamous phase reverse switch is in my humble opinion not all that useful, yes it gives you a strange twangy tone but I think it sounds a bit too thin to really have any useful purpose. Unless you stick it infront of a metal master, then it cuts through, but i still find myself not using it.
I give it a 9 becuase I like my low end(i started out as a bass player), most strat players will probably find it too bassy but hey, they're humbuckers, you can't expect Eric Johnson clarity from them.

The first thing you'll notice when you pick this guitar up is how heavy it is. Get a really comfortable strap because it will dig into your shoulder. Long sets will be troublesome with the weight(but you'll be buff after lugging it around, and we all know the ladies love that :-))
The action is very low with only a bit of fret buzz on the bottom E string, but it does not happen unless you do a full arm swing when you play (which you shouldn't do anyways, it looks foolish unless you're Johnny Cash).

All i can say is: This thing is a tank. If you tried to stage smash it, you'd do more damage to the stage than to the guitar. It's built to last. Mine is 26 years old and there isn't even a chip in the finish.

I picked up my T-60 yesterday at a pawn shop. It needs some cleaning and a little Armor All on the case, but all in all it looks great. I found a flyer for a New Year's Eve gig in the case dated 1993! All knobs are original, I don't hear any noise from them, and after a little tuning, it sounds great. The electronics seem to be in good shape. The strings are a bit used, but I'll remedy that in a few days. I sat and played it a while last night and am completely satisfied. I think it makes a nice partner for my T-15. I looked up the serial number on www.vintagetclub.nl and it comes up as a 1981 model. I'd like a '70s model someday too.

This is an update on the review I posted on 6-21-04.
Let's talk about the finish. I bought a new Fender Tele last year and sprung for the American with the Natural Ash body upgrade. It's the nicest looking grain I've seen on one, and I've looked at plenty.
So the Tele is sitting on the rack near my super nice natural T-60 when it hits me. If the T-60 had a gloss on it, the Tele would not even come close cosmetically. So, off to Precision Guitar in Phoenix so Thad and Tim can shoot it. A month and some $$$ later, it's put back together and it is STUNNING! If you have one of these with a really slick body, think about shooting a clear over the satin urethane.

Okay, to top it all off, I thought it would be kinda cute to have a T-40 bass to match the T-60. If I ever found one as slick with the natural finish, heck, I might just grab it for the right price. Well I found one. A CLEAN 1979 T-40 Bass with a killer body figured almost as nice as the T-60 popped up in a shop in Tucson, AZ. Paid a little over $300 with the hard case and it will probably get the same gloss treatment. I still believe Peavey could go into the vintage reissue business and sell a modest number of these for $2,000 apiece. If they built them as well as the originals I have, Gibson or Fender couldn't beat 'em for twice the price. Like I said, I have some really nice guitars to choose from and I still love these things.

Yes,Yes,Yes. I live in N. Utah and I visit pawn shops weekly to check out inventory. I have been eyeballing a T-60 in case with natural finish.(T-60's with finish other than natural command higher premium)I tell you this thing was on a shelf for 2 years priced at $300. It is in 95% excellent condition with all original stuff. I think it was the T-40 that had the same case with a little built-in practice amp.Well there was a sale after new years and the marked it down price was $200.Now it is home. I had no idea it was so old, and the electrics were so unusual. Try to buy ANY guitar made in U.S.A. for that price! It sounds great! The only scratch is on the pickguard as if the previous owner was in a punk band. Heavy! but I wouldn't suggest cutting the body as much thought was put into design more so than a garage warrior like myself.I have a maple neck but I heard they came in rosewood.

No buzzing whatsoever. I am an effects kind of guy. In comparison to my other guitars in my collection, the T60 requires the least amount of effects to get what I need. All I have is a J-Station and a Boss 532 which I only use to SLIGHTLY adjust EQ's. Whether the phase is on or off, or I use the neck or body pickups, I get exactly what I want to hear with minimal adjustments. My styles range from blues to rock to funk. The T60 has not once let me down. I am fully aware of the guitars that are out there, and I can get ALL of those sounds out of this one guitar... So why the hell buy 6 more guitars??? Not this guy...

And I kid you not, the T-60 is a steal at prices they're at right now. Again, they're heavy, but IMO, the heavier the better. Translation, panzy bad backs need not apply. In addition, it is my true belief that they are the most underrated electric guitar ever made. This fiddle is much more than I expected. If it were stolen, and I couldn't find the thief and kick his teeth in, damn right I would go out and by another one. on the spot. In a heart beat. The range of tone is unbeatable. Good ol' made in the USA quality! Dual Humbuckers that are splittable to single coil via the tone control. Sealed peavey tuners, phase switch, 22 frets on a maple fretboard. Swamp Ash body (very heavey, but very solid). Fixed bridge that stays in tune remarkably well for a guitar priced so inexpensively. Came in a case that looks like it'll survive the next nuclear holocaust.

This guitar covers a whole range of sounds from almost les paulish to almost stratish. When I did the split switch mod (found at www.peaveyt60.com) it got a little noisier. But I think that's my fault as I just need to ground the switch. If you use this guitar on stage you NEED to do this mod. Attempting to use the tone control to split the coils is futile on stage when you have to do it quickly. You won't get authentic Strat tones, or Les Paul tones, but you will get close to both. this guitar covers the middle ground betwen those very, very well. The tones I can get from this axe running both humbuckers simultaneously out of phase are to die for!!

The best site for T-60 enthusiasts on the Internet is www.peaveyt60.com. It has loads of wiring diagrams to hot rod your T-60, some interesting articles, other T-60 links, as well as a T-60 forum. The Designer of the Peavey T-60 (Chip Todd) frequents this forum, and answers questions quite often.
Peavey still supports this guitar after all these years. Parts are becoming rare though.

A gem of an axe at an unbeatable price. Perfect as a backup guitar. Better than any other piece of crap you'll pickup for $200 on ebay. An excellent choice for beginners as the sound is excellent, and you can make the action real low. Just a very playable guitar, and one of the best deals you can find in a quality used instrument.

Made in US in 1980, serial number 005... Since I got this guitar as a hand-me-down, I didn't have a manual and didn't know how all the electronics worked for many years. Dual humbucker pickups with independent volume and tone control, three-way selector, phase switch. The tone knobs are strangely wired tap the coil from dual- to single-coil, but with a little practice the tones are extremely versatile. Sturdy fixed bridge with through-body strings. Comfortable slim neck with easy action.

I have played all kinds of styles, and this guitar has never failed me. It is punchy enough for rock and metal, crisp enough for surf and rockabilly, twangy enough for country, sweet enough for R&B and jazz. I typically use solid-state amps with minimal effects. Common effects include Big Muff distortion, Boss stereo chorus, Cry Baby wah. I record with a GT-5 processor, and combined with this guitar practically any tone can be achieved. The only downfall is a difficulty achieving a warm, sweet clean tone without effects.

Action, intonation, etc. are all perfect. After many years of use and neglect, some of the pots are dirty and make some noise, and the pickups have mild buzz if tone is not carefully adjusted.

This guitar is a rock. I have never had any problems with it; it is like the honda civic with 300000 miles that is still driving across the country. Whatever mild problems it has (noisy pots, etc) are entirely due to lack of care and maintenance of owners (two, both teenagers). I would confidently gig without a backup.

Manuafacture date of my T-60 is circa 1982, in Meridian Miss. I has a solid Ash body, rock maple (that's funny--I always thought maple was a type of wood!) neck, rosewood fretboard, all-metal knobs ("military grade" is correct!), heavy duty fixed bridge, and thick frets.
The body is an attractive double cutaway in a gorgeous deep amber sunburst finish. Came with it's original hard plastic Peavey case.

My music styles range from Funk, Classic Rock, Blues, Country, Rockabilly, Soul and assorted Jazz. I play through a Peavey Delta Blues 210 amp using few effects.
When I unleashed this guitar from it's confines the pickups were adjusted too high, making the bass strings way too loud, the intonation was out, etc.....I immediately took it to a shop to have it "set up," and when i got it back it played like a dream!
I strapped this big mamma on with an extra wide strap so I didn't come away looking like Quasi Moto, and this guitar felt wonderful against my large frame! Better than any other electric I've ever had!
The tones are many and various, and consistent with the descriptions listed below. The pickups are of the more recent "blade" variety, not the older "toaster pickups. They are virtually noiseless....no gripes in that area whatsoever. What I'm constantly amazed with is how LOUD this guitar sounds! It is suitable for any style of music I'm playing. I like the fact that it doesn't sound like a Fender or Gibson or whatever.

I don't know how they had it set up 20-odd years ago. When I found it, it was partially strung with acoustic metal strings, the pickups were way too high. I was pleasantly surprised by the attractiveness of this guitar! The only scratches I could find were near the neck pickup, where someone had worn away a good deal of the pickup frame! The neck and body are virtually flawless! The wood is gorgeous hard Ash.....the finish a nice amber, deep sunburst colors. Everything about this thing is SOLID and clean.

This T-60 would endure any amount of live playing, and without a backup. The selector switch is a tad crackly, and will probably need maintenance sooner than any other thing. I love this guitar so much that I will probably get another like it. I have owned Peavey guitars in the past, but had no idea about the T-60 until very recently. I trust this manufacturer, especially their USA-made guitars and amps

If it were stolen or lost, I would definitely seek out another. I've owned Gibsons LPs and Fender Teles in the past and eventually parted with them, without regret. I like the fact that these Peaveys are not embraced on a huge scale, and that they have their own character. I think they're a kind of eccentric, like myself.

I purchased it new in about 1978 or 1979 and it is serial number 00345807. My T-60 is typical with the natural ash clear finish. I am the first and only owner. It is all original and has had no repairs or modifications. The other reviewers have described it well and i have little to add.
This instrument was built for sustain --- every design consideration seems to be aimed at this, and the result is a guitar with the longest clean note sustain you will find. Sustain is achieved thru mass and rigidity -- and these characteristics are repeated in practically every feature and aspect and detail of the instrument.
Sound
:
10
I generally agree with the other reviewers and I have only a few things to add. I feel that the tone quality of the T-60 is unique. the T-60 never became as popular as the strat or les paul, and hence its unique voice never became a classic, but I feel it does nonetheless have a character all its own. I describe the basic tone as extremely clear, round, and bell-like, with outstanding clean sustain. I used it in a soul band and I often would step into the horn line and play a trumpet part on the T-60 and it would blend remarkably well with the other horns -- it would disappear into the horn mix and become another trumpet. I think the reason is this bell-like tone. I also used to play it thru a rotary speaker on some songs and it could imitate an organ sound pretty well. I played slide on it a great deal and i agree with the reviewer who felt it was good in this role. I generally play the T-60 thru a vintage Fender Princeton Reverb, or thru a very early hand-built Mesa Boogie.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

My T-60 has excellent intonation. I have measured the tuning at all frets with a strobotuner and it is as near to perfect as a guitar can get. It came from the factory this way and I have never adjusted it. The action is extremely fast and sure. There are no buzzes anywhere on the neck, even when strings are bent to extremes. The neck is perfect -- it doesn't get any better than this.
Reliability/Durability
:

I agree with what other reviewers said. My T-60 has taken lots of hits but the natural wood finish does not show the damage. It still looks remarkably good. It is in very good shape overall, considering what I have put it thru. I should be ashamed of myself for how I have treated it. I have worn the finish off the bottom edge of the neck at 3 spots. I also wore a small hole through the silver plating on the edge of the treble pickup. Basically, it is built like a tank and I think it will last 300 years. It is 100% reliable -- it has always operated flawlessly. I might add also that the hard shell plastic case began to fall apart at the corners about 10 years ago and the case is now utterly pulverized -- the guitar is vastly more durable than the case was!!!!

For 25 years I was a bit sheepish and apologetic about my T-60. My friends wondered why I sold the other guitars, why I didn't have strat or a Les Paul. I would shrug and say, "Well, I know it's just a Peavey T-60, but I kinda like it anyway." I kept my real feelings inside. I did not know there were others who loved T-60s. When i found this review site I realized that I am not crazy and I am not alone. I don't have to apologize any more for my T-60. I dont have to feel like a weirdo (at least not for this reason). About 20 years ago, when I needed a bass, I searched for and found a T-40 --- I wanted to have the companion instrument.
The T-60 is a great and unique guitar and it is an undiscovered classic. It is one of the great guitars of all time, and finally now I can come out and say it out loud and be out in the open about how I feel about the instrument.

Not sure when this guitar was made, but I bought it brand new from Chuck Levin's about 22 years ago. It was my first electric guitar. Ash body with a maple neck (I think...not sure as I am not an expert on this). 2 pickups, 3-way selector, 2 tone and 2 volume knobs...all are nice except the 3-way selector switch which my kids managed to break; no biggie as I was able to get a replacement. The frets are laminated - it's the only guitar I've ever seen with gloss lamination on the frets. This guitar is a tad heavy and it is one of the reasons why I moved on to a Gibson SG, but I still love this guitar and refuse to give it up (in spite of my oldest son's pleas for me to give it to him). While a little heavy, this guitar is lighter than my brother's Les Paul. Comes with a terrific hardshell case that allows me to take it anywhere.

This guitar is very dynamic and can make an assortment of different, credible sounds. I put new GHS Boomer strings on it and was able to get some crunchy heavy metal sounds as well as Duane Eddy twang. A lot of surprising and satisfying tonal capabilities here and I'm always surprised by it's sonic range...very nice!!! Overall, gives a nice crisp, bright sound with a nice low end.

The other thing I love about this guitar is the neck action - thin neck that allow low and fast playing. Never had a problem with buzzing strings either. The glossy laminated finish on the frets is unique and almost weird, but I have no problem with it...probably allows better vibrato since it's so slippery...LOL. The neck is solid and never required adjustment even after all these years.

I haven't used this guitar for live gigs, but I have taken it out a few times. It travels well with the excellent hardshell case and never had a problem. The finish has held up extraordinarily well and nary a chink to be found in it's armor. This guitar is built to last.

Pound for pound, this guitar has given me the best bang for the buck! I have since purchased a Gibson SG which has now become my current axe of choice, but I love my T-60 and I will never give it up until they pry it from my cold dead fingers.

Mine's from the late 70's. Ash body, maple neck and fretboard, "rail" pickups (which i've heard are better than the other kind they switched to in the eighties, but i can't say from experience). 2 pickups, 3-way selector, 2 tone and 2 volume knobs, phase switch. Possibly the coolest thing about this very cool guitar is the capability of switching from single-coil to humbucking mode by rolling back the tone knobs. Also, it's got a phase switch, so when the pickup selector is in the middle position, you can get that great funky nasal sound. The ash body is very heavy, but that along with the string-through-body bridge, is part of what gives it such great tone and sustain.
Sound
:

This is possibly my favorite-sounding solidbody i've ever played. Great tone, amazing versatility. In single-coil mode, it's bright and punchy, but not quite as thin-sounding as a strat. As you roll the tone knobs back, the pickups switch into humbucking mode, so you can get a super-thick sound that works best with lots of distortion. With the pickup selector in the middle position, the phase switch allows you to put the pickups out of phase with each other, which creates a nasal tone. Try this with one of the pickups at full bright tone and the other with the tone knob rolled back. You can get so many cool, unique sounds out of this guitar.
I play it through a early eighties fender concert amp, no effects. It was probably made with blues and country in mind, but in addition to playing blues with it, i also like to play along with sonic youth cd's, and it sounds right at home.

My only dislike about this guitar is that the neck is very thin. My favorite neck are 60's strat and SG necks; the t-60 neck is significantly thinner than these. But it's really just a matter of taste... Apparently some folks like a super-thin neck.
Other than that, I haven't had any trouble with any of the hardware.

If i could only keep one, it would definitely be the peavey; i'd buy this guitar again in a second (in fact i've been kind of thinking about trying to get one in sunburst finish). I don't think there's another solidbody that i'd rather have, and when you consider the price i paid -- the bang for you buck on this american-made guitar is just phenomenal.

Mine might be one of the earlier ones, it sure looks it. Beat up and the wood on the necks looks like the worms have had at it. It is 21 frets, and the previous writer is wrong about a couple of things, a) I've never heard of a tele or strat or anything else 25 3/4, it is standard 25 1/2. b) The nut is not 1 5/16, more like 1 5/8+. It is all solid, with an otherwise unheard of pickup/switching/wiring arrangement that switches between HB and SC mode with the tone control. The neck pup is DiMarzio and the bridge pup is unidentified. Both are tapped for switching through the tone circuit, and gives an amazing variety of sounds passively. Mine was white, I'm not sure if it's originally white or a re-paint. I'm painting it gloss white with old automotive nitro-cellulose lacquer. The body style is "big" double cut style, it looks a little bit country. Fixed string through fender style saddles and cast metal bridge plate. It has Gotoh type tuners which must be very rugged as they still seem good. Maple 21 fret tele type neck 25 1/2" scale, medium frets. I am in the process of completely restoring it right off the bat as it was in rough shape. New pickguard, pots, switches, wiring, paint, refret already done and a new 22 fret neck ordered I may use as well. It should be interesting when it's done....

Purchased in 1981 for $300. Forget the guy who writes below that he thinks he paid $600 for his. Either he forgot about the amplifier he also bought the same day or else he was trying to inflate the value because he was getting ready to put the guitar it up on ebay. ;-)
Very few "features" to describe.
Maple neck and fretboard, ash body. Case came with it.
Scale is 25-3/4" (like a Strat/Tele)
Neck width at nut is 1-5/15"
The fretboard is fairly flat - maybe about the same as my '68 Les Paul (which may not be stock - I'm not sure)
The wiring of the pickups is cool (goes from a humbucker to a single coil)
Most notable feature about the guitar is its sheer BULK. In fact, there's SO MUCH bulk, I should probably give it a "10" for features. Maybe a 12.
Sound
:
10
Sounds are very good. Lots of range and lots of useful tones by fiddling with the controls. I really like that. In single coil mode, it's noticeably quieter than my Strats and Tele. If I were to describe the tone I'd say in single coil mode it's very similar to a Tele, but still its own sound. And in humbuck mode it resembles my old Les Paul, a bit more midrangey. The sustain is very good, if you like that compressed sound.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

It's a shame Harmony-Central lumps together "Action" with "Fit and Finish"
<//>
The action is very good. This is a slim neck, I personally like the slightly fatter neck on my Am Standard Strat, but this is playable. The strings feel somewhat close together to me, but it isn't too bad.
<//>
I've always found the guitar hard to play, not because of the neck/frets/action, but because its shape seems to always get in my way, regardless of whether I'm standing or sitting. Sitting is the worst for me, however. It's very hard to move around on the neck when sitting because the way the guitar sits in my lap, like a boat anchor (for a large ship) and the guitar's waist is just in the wrong place. Now, this is an individual thing: every body is shaped differently.
<//>
Even though there are plenty of frets (21?), playing in the higher register is very difficult for me. The huge block of wood on the body where the neck bolts on makes it nearly impossible for me to really wail or even play barre chords up there. I can play it, but it isn't fun at all.
<//>
The controls feel "right." You know what I mean? Sometimes, I'll play a guitar and when I turn the knobs the sound just doesn't seem to agree with the movement of the knobs. This guitar feels very natural when being adjusted. Maybe the best guitar for that I've ever played.
Reliability/Durability

After all these years this guitar still looks shiny new. I admit that this guitar hasn't been played as much as my other guitars (never took it on a gig), but even so the frets don't show as much wear as I believe they should after all this time. From the standpoint of longevity, I think Peavey did an OUTSTANDING job selecting the materials and assembling this baby.

I've had some sort of fretted instrument in my hands since before there were Beatles (mostly 6 string electric guitar). If you can only have one guitar for recording, this might be a good choice. Very versatile sound-wise. NOT for metal though - just not quite right.
For playing comfort, this is not the one. I'm sure there are many folks out there who prefer this thin, flat neck and the large, heavy feel of the body. Not me. I've threatened for years to have my guitar tech cut down the body, maybe drill some holes in the side to lighten it up, too. But then I look down at the poor, bloated thing and I repent, it would sorta be like defiling a piece of American history I guess.

I got mine new in 1978 and I think I paid around $600 for it. I think I got the first one to hit Coughman Music in Lancaster, Ohio. It is a USA-made, first year, "patents pending" model with the natural ashe body and maple neck. I am very pleased with the features of this T-60 as it is able cover any genre I can perform (that's probably not saying much). As far as technical features, creative electronics aside, its pretty basic (no locking tuners or bridge or tremolo) which means not alot to break. Mines still all stock - I guess that says enough.
Sound
:
10
I am obviously well pleased with the sound - I've had the thing 26 years. I'm pretty much a rocker, favoring 70's and 80's metal. I really like it that I can cover alot of sounds with this guitar's versatility that other reviewers have described better than I can. It sustains forever and also stays in tune very well.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
The action on my T-60 is probably one of the best I've ever tried. I suppose that I am biased due to the familiarity 26 years creates, but it is low and fast, spoiling me so much I have little interest in anything else. I deliberately kept this out of my son's hands until he got a couple years "toughening" with my old accoustic so he wasn't spoiled too.

I'd say any 26 year old guitar that continues to impress everyone who plays it could be rightfully called durable. I'd dare any other guitar maker out there to compare their best in this catagory. I did once break the phase switch (I think it was 1980) and it was absolutely my fault. I'll spare everyone my version of a clever description of this thing's invincibility and just state that it is reliable and durable.

Plus my 14 year old son always has mine. I have a 1979 T-60. I think they'r all USA made.
21 Frets
It has a VERY VERY solid, heavy body, with a 3-ply Black pickguard, on top of a tobacco sunburst finish...
The tone combination options are almost unlimited, with 2 tone/ 2 volume knobs, selector switch and phase switch..
IT has dual humbuckers, that almost resemble the Dimarzio Fast Tracks.. really hot distortion sounds, and very sustain-ful clean tones...these pickups really grab low sound, and punch out the highs nicely.
I believe all the body is Oak, with a maple neck.
It has a LARGE, string-thru body bridge,
and this guitar also has very sensitive tuners. (peavey)
most of them came with a peavey molded hard case that cannot be broken... you could runb this thing over with a train and still be jamming in memphis later in the evening...
i am very happy with the aound i get from this guitar...

Suits my style well(classic rock, blues). it plays nice clean tones and with lots of bass, but in my opinion the distortion tones are even better. I would call it more les paulish than stratish, but with all the tonal variations you can get close to both. the tone knobs are very responsive and turn the pickups from humbucker to single-coil when you turn them past 7,which is pretty cool. the phase switch also gives more variation but only when the pickup switch is in 2nd position since you have to have both humbuckers on to notice a difference. I just love the neck pickup, its deep and booming.

The man that emailed me back gave me an elaborate history and asked for my address so he could send me a few free skynyrd posters. I'm sure you've read the other reviews, there's alot to be had with this instrument. Dual humbuckers with coil-tap, phase switch, two tone and two volume knobs. Enough to give a wide variety of tonal options, but not so much that the tone itself is weighed down...if you know what I mean. The neck on this guitar is a replacment. I don't know what happened to the original neck, but hey, the Tele neck is great for me. (See "Action, Fit and Finish") Nice and thick, and it adds some brightness. Hardtail, three-ply pickguard, durable hardware, tough as a tank. Very resonant. MADE IN THE USA!!!

This guitar suits my bedroom style...I'm a metalhead at heart, but I've lately been delving deep into blues, and I tend to reach for this guitar when I'm in that mood. At home, I run this through either a 30 watt Marshall combo or a little Dano 15 watt.. nothing too spectacular, I know, but they work fine for my woodshedding.
Depending on the settings, you can get thick, thin, dark, bright, anything really. In my opinion this is a remarkably versatile guitar, especially with the coil taps. Quiet. Nice and full, unless you specifically dial that out. Good sustain. If you play anything under the vast umbrella of "rock", you simply cannot go wrong with this guitar.

First of all, I got this guitar as a gift, and second hand. From what I could gather at the Peavey Guitar Forum, it's a late '70s or early '80s guitar, but most likely a '78. The gift-giver had not played the guitar in five years, so naturally it was not in tune, but the action is nice and low, and everything is in great condition, especially considering the age. There are a few dings, nothing that penetrates the finish, which is a nice muted sunburst. Very little corrosion for a twenty year old instrument.
There is one flaw with this particular instrument, that being the bridge pickup will not work when it is selected alone. It works when both pickups are on, but when used by itself, there is only a very thin, very shallow tone. This is most likely a wiring problem, I jsut have to bring it in and get it checked out. IMPORTANT - this is not a shortcoming in the design or the construction or the guitar, just natural wear and tear.
One more thing, the neck is a replacement Warmoth Telecaster neck, which I love; again, I recieved this as a gift and this is how it came.

This guitar would most definitely withstand a show. Hardware- no problemo. The finish alone is stronger than your average axe, and the wood...holy hell is this guitar heavy. Resonant as can be, but HEAVY. I have no idea what it is made out of, but you'd break the stage if you tomahawked this thing, and you'd probably stay in tune. The strab buttons are solid, but if you play live you're probably equipping strap locks, which I'd always recommend. Playing a show without a backup seems to be tempting fate, but you could depend on this.

I've been playing close to five years, and I own an '03 ESP Explorer, a 1981 Ibanez Destroyer II, a Danelectro Innuendo, an Ibanez five-string bass, and a few other odds and sods. As I got this for free, I couldn't ask for anything more. This is a rock-solid guitar with great versatility and good looks.
Now listen up, you can get one for very little money...browse the prices paid for these. 1970's guitars for what, $200-$300? And these are top quality instruments. Look at the overall ratings here, and then pop in the Les Paul section and compare...and then compare the prices. Sooner or later, people are going to wake up and start really charging for these. If you find one, buy it. You will not be dissapointed.

Wish I knew more about it's history.
If it was stolen, I'd hunt the thief and beat them up using it, without fear of damaging it.
I also play a deArmond with the Bigsby tremolo, so I have my dream paring for gigs.
This guitar is definitely top of the food chain, played a pricy new Telecaster recently, it was like a tin can with some elastic bands stretched over it by comparison to the Peavey.
To get this gem for the price I paid, on our expensive market here is excellent.

Serial Number 00474175 which dates it to around 1979. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that because I just picked it up a few days ago and am starting my research. All the bels and whistles mentioned in the other reviews are there because she's still completely stock. I have the natural finish, with the maple neck. There is very little wear on the guitar and the frets are a showing very little wear as well. It came with the original rectangular case which is beat up pretty bad but I guess it did it's job!

Made November '80 in Mississippi.
21 frets, SOLID body, control scheme is similar to Les Paul. Notable differences are tone pots that make the humbuckers go single coil when dialed above 7, and a phase switch that reverses the bridge humbucker when using both pickups resulting in the mids being scooped out. Northern Ash 3 piece body and 2 piece Maple neck. Clear satin finish really shows off the wood while all finish scratches and scuffs are invisible unless you hold it up to the light. Bridge is sorta like a cast tele ashtray, strings thru the body. Original hard case is pretty substantial except for the cam lock latches. Okay but they don't have much closing force. A minor gripe is on the inside. It is well padded except for the hard plastic cover over the storage area under the neck. It has rubbed the only discernable wear the guitar has onto the back of the neck. I keep a cloth under it now that it's mine.

I'm a classic / hard rock and blooze guy, can't play for squat but I can amuse myself for hours. I've managed to collect some nice guitars to cover about any sound and have always been intrigued by the T-60. I just got this off ebay from guitarsandeffects.com (Thanks Nat!!!) and I haven't begun to figure out all the sounds this thing is capable of. The tone control that also goes from humbucker to single coil in addition to it's normal duty is cool. BOTH pickups are very versatile, I hardly ever used neck pickups before. It will spank like a loud tele, blend like a strat in the bridge/middle position, or get fat like a hot humbucker. Wild. I play thru a Hot Rod DeVille 2x12 and usually sound choices are made by guitar selection. Strat, Tele, Les Paul, 335, SG Junior, Guild Blues 90 are all versatile but this thing kills them all in that department. Maybe not a better guitar, but the T-60 is no slouch compared to guitars costing 10 times as much. If nothing else it would be the perfect backup since it can do so many tones. At least a 9.

As far as customer support, I called Peavey with the serial number the day I got it and they were very helpful and I got alot of technical advise to help me learn more about it. I don't think they track production as close as the other guys, at least not on the old stuff. For example, the serial number is only that, there is no date code or anything hidden in it. I'm a believer, the big guys could learn a thing or two here. Hartley Peavey did something right.

Started picking in '77, started playing in High School in '82. My life story is on the review of my Les Paul Classic Plus (Sorry!) I also have a fantastic '93 American Standard Strat, an '01 335 Dot Reissue (buttah!), a '01 Guild Blues 90 (Rocks!), a beat up p-90 SG Junior, and a '99 Guild DCE-3 acoustic made in Rhode Island with Flame Maple sides and arched back, built like a tank! If any of them were lost or stolen, my first stop would be my gun safe. Which way did they go? This guitar was cheap but the value is way beyond that. I don't think there is another one out there this clean for any price. The tech guy I spoke with told me that Hartley has resisted the reissue nostalgia craze and thinks it is a rip off. With what Fender and Gibson are getting for their "Historic" stuff, he's right. I beg to differ on this one point. They couldn't sell this guitar new for less than 2 grand at Fender, 4 grand at Gibson. If it was priced under $2,ooo to compete with the lower end Pauls and ANY Fender, I'm convinced Peavey could sell enough to make it worth their while. If you've never played one of these, go find one!!! When I took it to my luthier, he got all misty eyed and said he put a Kahler trem on one he sold years ago. Such regret!

Great quality sound (no hum or buzz) and LOTS of variety of sounds. Having said that, I never could get the Strat sound I wanted out of the T-60, so I bought a Strat (two of them). I kept the T-60, though: this is a GOOD sounding guitar - definitely not a throw-away. I can get lots of sounds out of it that I can't get with my Strats.

It's been a while (I bought the guitar in 1978) since the T-60 left the factory, but I remember the guitar being very playable out of the box. It remains that way today and I live in a city (Winnipeg) with extreme temperature and humidity changes). The fit and finish far exceeds my MIJ Strat. It almost rivals the fit and finish of my American Deluxe Strat.

:

I've used the T-60 for teaching and gigs for years. It's 100% reliable. A MUCH better-built guitar than my MIJ Strat. I replaced 8 small pickup mounting screws in the late 70's (the originals stripped) and had to re-tighten the 1/4" patch cable jack around that time. Otherwise, the T-60 has needed NO work. Two years ago, I sent it for set-up to one of the local (Winnipeg) guitar gurus, and there wasn't much he needed to do: just some fine tuning for a heavier gauge of strings. This fit and finish on this guitar has aged extremely well: no cracking, chipping, oxidation, etc. The (included) hardshell case hasn't held up quite as well: the handle screws always come loose (they have since day 1) and the pocket covers have come unglued - no big deal.

I've never dealt with Peavey directly, but have had excellent rapport with Peavey dealers. I've owned several Peavey amps over the years - rock solid (like the guitars). A lot of Winnipeg musicians turn up their noses at Peavey products, but it's hard to beat Peavey on quality of sound and construction. Excellent product for a very reasonable price.
This guitar hasn't needed any repairs, so I can't comment on how easy/hard it is to get repairs done!

I've been playing guitar for 30 years. I also own a 84-87 MIJ Strat (very decent guitar), a 2004 American Deluxe (amazing guitar), an Ovation electric-acoustic, a Takamine 12-string (lawsuit headstock), amongst others. My latest amp is a Peavey Delta Blues (tube amp). I play a wide range of music, from classic rock to jazz to country. The T-60 (and the Strats) can handle them all. The T-60 was my first electric; it doesn't produce all the sounds I want, but the sounds it does produce are Grade A. Congratulations to Mr. Todd for a great design. I will NOT be selling this guitar.
This guitar has a lot of sentimental value; if it were stolen, I doubt another T-60 could replace it. However, it's worth replacing: I don't think there's anything else out there that gives you the same amount of guitar for as little money.

I'm not a professional, don't play gigs, and am not an expert on sound. But as others have commented, the T-60 seems exceptionally versatile in tone. Good sustain when required. Was a clean-looking, if somewhat plain guitar in '78. The body now looks dated (I still like the headstock). The T-60 allows for neck and individual string adjustments. No obvious manufacturing flaws on this T-60.

The T-60 isn't a piece of art, but it was made to last. This guitar was hyped as a good value back in 1978- and it's easily the best 200 bucks I ever spent. It was apparently cheaper to manufacture since the body was robot-machined. Nearly everything is solid wood or heavy metal on this baby -only the plastic pickgaurd is showing some cracking near the screw holes. The only design flaw on this 78 model was the choice of flat tapered pickup/ phase switches. These broke off very easily- I had them replaced with a different style selector.
The nickel frets began showing some wear after about 10 years of almost daily use. I still haven't replaced them -not experiencing any fret buzz.

First impression: The T-60 has a very non-typical and extremely versatile tone spectrum. It does not operate like conventional guitar tone curcuits, and so it continuously captures my imagination. I have had the instrument 5 months, and still haven't exhausted it's tone capabilities on my amps (NORMALLY, I figure out tone capabilities in 2-3 days!). That is versatility!
The rather heavy northern ash body yields a sound indicative of it's dense grain - very rich, full, and somewhat compressed. As others have said, it is very Les Paulish sounding in the neck pickup - AMAZING, considering it is also a maple neck guitar!
The bridge pickup is not like a Strat, Tele, Gibson, but perhaps a hybrid of all three; not the twang of a Fender or the depth of a Gibson humb, but still a strong, crisp singing voice.
The in/out phase switch is a real trip! Clean, in phase, it gives you a "honk" in your pick attack, kind of like having a built-in Wah pedal. Distorted, you hear all of that plus the upper mid harmonics are livlier; almost as if there is a slight detuning effect on. That can put "searing" into your lead and it cuts thru with an uncommonly different sound that draws attention.
The cavity is shielded, and is quiet except in high-gain single coil operation, as one could expect.
It is very strong in sound for metal lead especialy, but mellow and rich enough for great jazz chording, twangy enough for country hybrid picking (not as much as a Fender; a little fatter). Vintage rock, rockabilly, and overdriven amps come into full color with the T-60. I'll try to say it again: the versatility is incredible.
I will add this quote from exclusive T-60 artist Brian Henneman (Bottle Rockets), on how the T-60 differs in capability from all coil-tapped guitars: "The T-60 has the only acceptable humbucker AND single coil sound."
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
The body is slab-style (no arm or belly contouring), and heavy due to the denser northern ash and hardrock maple, and can be discomforting to some.
The wide lower bout of the body disallows you being able to fit the T-60 into a Strat-contoured fitted case (the dealer threw in an unused Rickenbacker case for me!). Not to worry, the T-60 is a good choice to fit in a gig bag, since the knobs and hardware are so durable - no plastic!
The neck shape is unusual (Gibsonish) for the style of guitar (Fenderish), but I have adjusted to in within a couple minutes of playing. I prefer more rounded freboard edges with flatter radiused fretboards, but the T-60 is workable.
I prefer med-jumbo frets on maple fretboards, too (can't stand thin frets), so that was a good move for Peavey.
I would have liked a tremolo option on the T-60, especially since it sings metal leads so well... but the designers chose not to dig trem cavities into the ash body for the sake of tone; something I am sure they researched.
Reliability/Durability
:
10
I got the guitar after it was 25 years old, but it appeared like it only had a year or two of wear. The natural urethane finish hides scratches better than anything that is painted, and I have no plated metal on the guitar that is tarnished - not even a screw!
The whole guitar has a solid feel, no place where you feel that you've got to be careful not to break something.
USA-made, dense woods, excellently plated metals, and NO PLASTIC! Will last for centuries, wait and see.

Peavey has excelled like no other USA company in making low-cost sound equipment. They've always been affordable, and DURABLE.

Like I say, the tone capabilities and durability of the T-60 are in an altogether different category than any conventional guitar. They are dirt cheap versatile instruments that will outlast their contemporaries. Why collectors are not stocking them up is a complete mystery. T-60's are today a sleeping gold mine. If, in a 100 years, my family has 6 of them, they could buy a country.
I have the honor of being a Peavey Forum member, and have come to find out that Peavey owners are some of the most practical and polite folks to be found anywhere. They are dedicated to provide accurate help and support to anyone that posts a question - a true reflection of the company that has served them. It is truly a treasure to see people give back simply because they're thankful.
The original designer of the Peavey T-series guitars, Chip Todd (see his review posted here), is a regular contributor to the forum, and has enriched the knowledge of us all in the areas of guitar manufacturing, development, modification, setup - for free, on his own time, simply because of the gratitude he has had working with Peavey these many years.
I want to be associated with folks like that, and the instruments they play.

I got this guitar from a pawnshop. And... for the first time I got the best of them. Not sure what year (70's). Solid guitar looks like Oak. Natural wood finish very nice black pickguard, heavy duty knobs and string through back configuration. Two Humbucker pickups with four knobs like Gibson, plus it has two switches to split coils and phase out. This guitar is made in the U.S.A and is built solid! The bridge is heavy duty and doesn't look cheap. The tuners seem pretty stable. My #1 "E" keeps going out of tune, but I think that being from a pawnshop, that the e was replaced and it's just stretching. Usually all the guitars at pawnshops have no e at all. I hate pawnshops. but thanks to Peavey's under rated reputation... I did the fucking this time!!!!! I give this category a 10+!! This guitar has many disguises of other sounding guitars.

Very interesting. For some odd reason, it feels like I am playing a big body jazz guitar with a Fender strat neck with a Les Paul growl! At the pawnshop I played through a little Kustom and cranked the distortion and it was love at first crunch! When I brought it home I plugged it into my Peavy Renown with 4 tens and blasted off to space. I slipped into a time warp and ended up somewhere in the 60's! This baby sounded as great as my 59 Supro with the humbuckers cranked up. Than I split some coils, switched channels and was on a surfing safari with the Beach Boys. I'm not fully aware what other things this guitar can do yet, as I only have played through a few amps and effects but I will find out. It will get a jazzy sound though!

They were like the misfit toys. About three years ago you could pick em up for around 150.00 all day long. I brought mine to a party and people who didn't have a clue about guitars or how to play looked at this guitar with admiration. The topic was how heavy the son of a bitch was. We were watching a scary movie and I figured I could woop the ugly beast with my T-60 with ease! The looks of this baby is champagne!! It gets alot of attention. I love it in my collection. I still love my Alvarez Dana the best, but my new Peavey opens new doors for my writing.

Will this guitar withstand live playing? That's funny. If I were to get drafted I would bring this guitar as weapon and shield of my choice. Also would work great to wack them pesty "can you play metallica again" for the eighth time bugs. This beast is so much heavier than my Fernandes Ravelle, which I thought was a tank. Thank god these guitars are not priced by the pound. So that would be a YES, this guitar will withstand anything!!

I have been playing and recording for some time now. I am a player and collector and own alot of gear. I'm glad I finally found one of these. They are not as abundant as 3 years ago. I would love to get a white or black one, but that will be a fun mission. Even the pawn shops are getting privy to these baby's now. But if you cant find a T-60 try some other Peavey models before they get gotten up! I have the Predator Ax and it's nice too. If this guitar were stolen I would be pissed. I had a hard time finding it locally. I won't lose it for sure. It takes two roadies to pack it up!

My first ax, a used 1979 t-60, still like new in 2003! Everything was honey oak color in the early 1980's, even the food. This guitar still looks and plays like it's new because it was made to last, with solid oak body and ash and maple neck and fretboard, trimmed in black and chrome controls. It arived in it's double-walled injection molded ABS plastic and velour-lined case, complete with the key and original user's guide. A few scratches, but oak doesn't show! This is a favorite with pros because it is a true professional instrument, not some spray-painted pine and plastic kindling! Sorry, if that's what you play now, but this thing is the Hummer of guitars, complete with HUMbucker/single coils!

Plays anything, any style. No pot-noise, no rattle, nothing. I use it with a Zoom-15 modeling amp (awesome in itself) and a digitech RP200 pedal. I have small hands and this is the only guitar I have ever felt like it fits me, not me trying too become gumby to fit the guitar.

Arrived used and played perfect right out of the case. Stays tuned, sustain is unreal and the thing is made to be around until 3003. I'm not. Forget the rest, and if weight is a big deal, then screw it to a music stand...then everyone will want to play it. This guitar makes you want to play guitar! I am giving up my regular job as an imaging technologist, growing what hair I have left at 46 and will be wearing skin-tight pants to become a world-famous t-60 rocker...maybe next week.

The guitar is solid White Ash, the HEAVIEST wood used for guitars (only solid granite rock would be heavier). 21 fret, blade pickups, solid black, string through body. It has dual volume and tone controls for both pickups,3 way selector switch, and another toggle switch that comes out when both pickups are selected and volume maxed out. The neck is ULTRA- thin.

I play everything (metallica/nirvana/old country/noisey crap/classical) and it does pretty well. Select the neck PU and turn the tone down to around 4 or so, and you get some infinite sustain, also thanks in part to the dense White Ash. My favorite sound is from the neck pickup with the tone on 10. You can get anything from the most muffled bass to the thinnest of the thin minues the super briteness.

Well, the action is adjustable and stuff, but no matter what, when i fretted the 6th string on the 3rd fret (G) it was always a tad sharp, even after setting intonation. That bugged the heck outta me. The is practically no string-bend on the high E, or you risk breaking them. i had to play metallica solos and b/c 21 frets, i had to use a n.harmonic on the 5th high E to create a high E.....don't like like jive. once again, no string no string bend on that string.

The wonderful feature of this guitar is the huge variety of sounds that can be acquired from it.It sounds great with a straight amp or loaded up with stomp box effects. The pickups are very balanced. None of the strings have any harsh or unpleasant sounds. On single coil settings, it does not quite have the bell like tone or the crisp twang that a Stratocaster has and it definitely is not as brite as a telecaster. In humbucker mode it comes real close to a LesPaul, but not quite.

This ranks with some of the finest guitars manufactured in its time.
This has the ability to set very low action. The trick is first to adjust the truss rod so the entire length of the neck is straight with just enough relief to fit a pick under the strings at the 8th fret.Next set the saddles at mid height. Then adjust the neck tilt to get action height. If the strings get too close to the pickups, the saddles may need raising and the tilt adjusted again. Fine adjustments and intonation can then be made at the saddles.
This adjustment system was ahead of its time.

This is one tough durable guitar. Mine is one of the later models, but it has been well used and is still in pristine contition. Everything is still original. The only thing I don't like about this, is the body styling tends to place your picking directly over the neck pickup.I have seen several T60's with scuffed up neck pickups. I guess I'm not the only one experiencing this.

Over the past 30 years, I have accumulated several electric guitars. Mostly Stratocasters and Telecasters. This T60 ranks high with them and it would truely be difficult to pick a favorite. This T60 is the heaviest guitar I own. It could tip the scale on any two of my other guitars. It sure is pretty to look at.I always wondered why Peavey didn't continue a model of this. I can only guess that its weight, the larger body size, no tremolo and the popularity of Fender and Gibson, made Peavey abandon it for other designs.New Fender deluxe Stratocasters have adapted most of the T60's features in to them.Yes this is a fine Vintage instrument with technology and craftmanship ahead of its time. These are worth several thousand dollars. I can't believe they are selling for only a couple hundred dollars

Neck Like a Strat, Body Like the Bastard child of a Les Paul and an ES-335, I found my late-70s vintage t-60 just in time for it to be my own little Christmas present to myself one year. Neck is Maple and comfy, body is Ash, pickups are replaced (mediocre aftermarket stuff..who's Goto? not *Gotoh*, but *goto*)-oh, and did I mention it's heavy? DAMN! My shoulder aches just thinking about it...
Other than that, 4 controls for a standard 2 humbucker arrangement. The famed Phase-reverse switch is present on my guitar, but not hooked up to anything. All in all, pretty standard stuff.
Sound
:

It sounds good, but it doesn't seem to have a niche that it fills on its own. I suppose that this could be remedied by reconnecting the phase switch, but at present it sounds like the somewhat unremarkable middle child in a family full of Honors students.
It doesn't have the midrange-heavy sustain of the Les Paul, nor the snappy bite of a Strat, but falls somewhere in between. It's got a good raucous overdrive sound with a decent and usable clean tone. And the pickups blend well, better than my Les Paul, in fact.
For some reason, it doesn't like my Tweed Princeton, but on most other amps I have it seems to work fine. I wish I could have heard this guitar when it had the original p/u's in it, as this thing needs something somewhere...Maybe if I put some humbucker-sized p-90s in it...
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

Set up fine, action good, Neck is AWESOME! Intonation needed to be fixed, but that's standard for a used guitar.
Knobs on control pots are kinda torn up, but again, it's 20 years old and it looks like it's lived a hard life.
One little niggling concern: The neck plate has raised lettering instead of stamped lettering-it catches on my shirt when I'm playing standing up. I know it's small, but it makes a difference when deciding what to take to the gig.

If it sounds like I've been hard on the t-60 in this review, I suppose it's because I'm still in thrall over the wonderfully mellifluous tones generated by my newly acquired Les Paul. It's Really not a bad guitar. In fact, I liked it so much that I bought this particular guitar twice (Sold it to a friend then bought it back), so that's gotta count for SOMETHING. And for the money, it's tip-top.
The only real concerns at present are the tremendous weight and the lack of a trademark sound. But honestly, I don't think I would have noticed if I hadn't gotten a Les Paul.

If you've read any reviews or seen the guitar, you already know the features (22 frets, 2 humbuckers with a volume and a tone control for each, plus a phase switch, called by my local guitar adjustor "the mystery switch"). Unlike most T-60s--including the one I bought in 1983--the one I have now is *not* heavy as a tank: the upper part of the body has been slimmed somewhat, making the guitar thinner and lighter than usual. Let me stress that this is how the guitar was manufactured, not a private job. I had heard that late-model T-60s were lighter than earlier, but I had never seen one until recently.
The neck feels good (rather thin, just right for smallish-handed guys like me), and the maple neck and fingerboard let you simply *fly.* The construction all the way around is solid, and the neck-tilt adjustment option (through the neck plate) is a godsend.
My only two complaints: 24 frets would be nice, and the torsion rod in the neck takes an actual socket-type wrench rather than the standard allen wrench, which makes adjusting the neck bend mildly inconvenient.
Sound
:
10
Sounds fantastic, whether you want a Les Paul-type sound or a Strat-like sound. After foolishly parting ways with my original T-60 fourteen years ago, I searched high and low for another guitar with such versatility of sound, and I never found one until recently, when I bought another T-60. When the tone is cranked all the way up, the pickups sound like single-coils; when you back the tone down to about 7, they become humbuckers. And the "mystery switch," when you use both pickups together, creates a singularly cool sound.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

It's doesn't--and can't--have the lowest action I've ever seen, but it works pretty well. Combine the neck-tilt, the torsion rod, and the adjustable bridge, and you've got multiple ways to adjust the action to the Nth degree, but for some reason I've never been able to get super-low action without some fret buzz.

As reported by so many others, it's a tank. In the event of nuclear war, cockroaches and T-60s will inherit the earth. I got my current T-60 through a pawnshop, and the bridge pickup didn't work and the phase switch was broken. Took it to the local guitar shop, where they popped in a new DPDT-type switch for the phase ($3.99 at Radio Shack), and the whole machine works and sounds like a brand-new instrument.

This was my first electric guitar, purchased new in 1983. It's gloss black with a black pickguard. I've plastered it with geeky stickers because it was so, well, black. Other reviewers have described it below, but to summarize the most relevant features:
* Pregnant stratocaster body style
* Weighs more than you do
* 2 Peavey toaster-styled "blade" humbuckers
* Tone controls that gradually tap one pickup
coil when turned from 7 to 10, yielding a bright
single-coil sound at 10.
* Phase reversal switch for the bridge pickup
* 2 piece bolt-on maple neck
* 25.5 inch scale with 21 medium frets
* Big tele-styled, string-thru bridge
* Included a custom-molded hard plastic case

The T-60 has a very neutral sound. While this means the guitar lacks a distinctive individual tone, it also allows for superb versatility. It sounds good either clean or distorted. In full humbucking mode, it does a good Les Paul impression, albeit somewhat brighter. With the coils tapped (tone on 10), it provides acceptable tones for country (recall that before EVH gave the company rock credentials, Peavey mainly catered to the C & W crowd), and it can do the Fender thing minus the extreme twang. Putting the pickups out of phase produces mondo quack -- which can be tempered by rolling back the volume on either pickup. The pickups' output isn't that hot by modern standards. The noise floor is quite low, even with the coils tapped.

I have no recollection of the quality of the original factory set-up. I have tweaked the truss rod, saddles, pickups, and neck joint so many times in the last 20 years that any deficiencies in its playability are probably my fault. That being said, there is a bit of fret buzz when adjusted to a medium-low action (4/64th on the high-E). Bends are easy, and artificial harmonics ring out nicely. The neck profile is on the thinner side, but not extreme. The bridge feels good against my palm.

I'm not sure when it was made but it looks to be fairly old and most of the reviews say late 70's to late 80's so that is when i assume it was made. It is a 21 fret guitar with a black pickguard. has three way pickup select for the 2 humbuckers. One for each and one for the middle of it. There is also another switch but i haven't figured out what it does for certain yet. It has two volume adn two tone knobs for the humbuckers. I play mainly more along the lines of heavy metal and this guitar isn't suited in my opinion for it but don't get me wrong this is a pretty nice guitar. I am a beginner i have only been playing about a year but I am playing on a Fender(dont know the specs right off) and a Crate GX-15R. On the Fender it produces A LOT of Feedback when you turn it up over halfway on the lead channel, but other than that that is the only problem i have with it as far as sound goes. One las problem with it is the weight. This guitar weighs like 15 pounds or something. The guitar produces a wide variety of tones and sound that i am satisfied with.

This guitar can withstand a lot. It has taken quite a bit of punishment from me. It has fell over( I don't have a guitar stand) a few times and the only damage is a chip above the third fret. I am playing my first jig saturday and i am not going with a backup. THe finish is still pretty good for it being so old and everything hardware wise is still in very good condition. I bought my Peavey T-60 from a friend about two years ago and it has been a great guitar. This baby has two humbuckers with a phase switch. (I guess that is to turn them into singles) As for features this guitar is no too fancy. It is very heavy and resonates very well. It has 22 frets which have worn well for me.
It has good tuners on it and it will stay in tune through a hurricane. It has a fixed bridge which I like very well. I replaced the string saddles a few months ago because the old ones were breaking strings like mad. I put graphite ones on there and that made it a new guitar.
As for the body and neck, the neck I thing is mapel and I'm pretty sure the body is wood. I do know it is very heavy.
This guitar was my first one and I still have not got another one even though I play in some pretty hot bands now. If your starting out like when I got it or am playing with a team now it is a very good banjo. I give it a ten because I like the guitar, even though it is pretty basic.

I can play everything from metal to smooth jazz on this babe. The pickups are set so I can get a hot single coil sound or a smooth rhythm sound. Very good setup.
This one, I don't know about others, blares a bit when you get up on the higher frets with your bottom strings. (E A and D) I don't know what this is from but don't mind it too much.
I use it in church and for all the different sounds I need it works very well. A ten for sure.

This guitar was made in 1978. It is the first guitar ever made by Peavey. I cant figure out what kind of body it has. The online manual just says hardwood. The neck in maple and so is the fretboard. It has 2 humbuckers, 2 volume and 2 tone, a 3-way toggle switch for the pickups, and an interesting switch that puts the guitar "in phase". I never figured out what that means, but it only works when both pickups are selected. The neck is very easily to play and it has a fixed bridge, no Floyd Rose crap!

If you like to play classic rock, this guitar is for you. It has sort of an AC/DC type of tone. I haven't noticed any noise from the pickups since i've had this guitar. My step-dad bought it in 1978 when it came out. I play hardcore metal, so I don't use it very much. The thing that makes this guitar great is the phase switch. When both pickups are selected, the switch gives the guitar sort of a hollow sound which I think sounds unique. The guitar has lots of low end, and is also very bright when you use the bridge pickup. I'm currently running it through a Line 6 POD Pro and into a Mesa 20/20 power amp and out to a Marshall 4x12 cab.

Like I said, this guitar was bought in 1978 when the model first came on the line, so I don't know how it was when it was first bought. When I started playing guitar about 6 years ago, I had to get the pickup switch repaired. But the finish is still great, and i've never had to adjust the trus rod.

Since it is so old, it would problably need to have the hardware serviced about every ten years or so. The finish seems like it would never come off. I problably bring a backup with me just in case, but I doubt that it would give out during a perfromance.

I've been playing for 6 years now. I also own a Carvin bolt guitar, and Ibanez 7 string, a Fender P-Bass, and an Ibanez 5-string bass. If it was stolen, I would be heartbroken because of how nice it is. It is practically a piece of guitar history. Again, it is really designed for classic rock, not modern hardcore metal. It also works well with punk rock. Overall, it is a great ax!

Made in the USA, by all accounts. 21 Frets, 2 volumes, 2 tone, single/double coil switch, 3-way pickup selector. All original equipment (with the Peavey logos everywhere, no less). The adjustable bridge is nice, and the pick-guard covering the electricals makes working on it easy. The body is one solid mutha - a big hunk of wood that resonates well, except the neck is total crap. Stays in tune well. I pulled it out of the case after two years of sitting in the closet and it was barely a half-step out of tune. I have a T-40 hardshell bass case that I keep it in and it fits just fine.
Sound
:

Not exactly Seymour Duncan, but the blade pickups do have a classic sort of tone. I had to adjust them close to the strings to get a decent output. With .13 gauge strings it has better sustain than with the .11s or whatever I had left on it when it was in storage. In single-coil mode the tone is pretty crunchy with the axe tuned to open-G and the 6th string tuned another whole step down.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
5
The action reeks because the neck reeks. I had to adjust the bridge and truss rod quite a bit to get rid of string buzz - and that's AFTER putting .13's on it. Some may like the glossed maple neck, but to me it feels like playing on snakeskin. I keep waiting for it to coil around my neck and trying to choke me. Still, if I can replace the neck, I may not be embarassed to play it in front of people.
The finish is trashed because 10 years ago a friend of mine sanded it down and put a horrifically graphic paint job on it, painting it white and splashing red paint over it, so when you're playing it you look like you've been disemboweled. The laquer has yellowed over they years, making it look positively gruesome. I may sand the entire thing down and put a clear coat on the bare wood if I ever get to it.
Reliability/Durability
:
8
The frets are pretty worn, but other than being a bit on the dirty side (which polish fixed), the axe has survived mostly being locked up in a the closet over the years and innumerable temp/humidity changes. If you need a sturdy axe for your kid who is learning, want something unsual to tinker with when you don't feel like retuning your main axe, or if you just need a spare manhole cover, this axe will stand up to twenty-plus years of off-and-on use.

I have a Peavey VTM 120 head and 5150 412 cabinet that I am very hapy with. That being said, Peavey tube amps are is a different class from Peavey guitars. I bought this off a friend who picked it up in a pawn shop, which is where it belonged at the time (back around 1988 or so). It's a cool, oddball old guitar that I keep because it was my first axe. Now, I have some nice axes, and this isn't one of them. But it's decent enough to hang on to, like an old AMC Gremlin you just can't let go of. If I ever get bored, I may rip it apart, put a decent neck on it, put some PAFs or something else unusual in it, and pretend it's not a Peavey. But like that old Gremlin, no amount of tinkering or nostalgia will free it of that dubious pedigree.

1979 USA Peavey T-60. 3 piece swamp ash body. 21 frets on a 25.5" maple neck with a maple fretboard. 2 volume, 2 tone(With concentric coil tap) and a phase switch. 2 Peavey "Toaster" blade-style humbucking pickups. Natural finish. Hard tail. Non locking tuners. The body shape is what I like to think is what would happen if a strat and a Les Paul has a baby. Lots of great features.

I play in a punk rock band, and the tones I get are perfectly suited for the style I play. You can get any type of sound you want to out of this beast. The pickups were a bit noisy, but after taking them out and cleaning them the hum decreased drastically. They still hum, but not too much. Very warm, buttery tone with the humbuckers on and a good tele-style snap with the coil tapped.

This guitar was made in 1979, so wear is expected. The three piece body is in great condition considering that it's probably been dragged around on stage for years. The first 3 frets are very worn, and I need to get them recrowned. The saddle height adjusting screws are rusted, but other than that it's great.

It's been said before: This thing is a tank. It's heavier than a les paul, and has twice the tuning stability of a Tele. 1982 USA made dual humbuckers, with 2 volume and 2 tone controls that act as a single/humbucking coil split. Turn the tone knobs to 10 and and you have a single coil pickup, the dual coil kicks in at 7. Dual cutaway, tobacco sunburst. Hardtail bridge, standard tuners, maple neck, and 21 frets. Hardshell case that would withstand a nuclear blast. Very heavey guitar, made out of Ash.

Don't know anything about factory setup, bought it used, and the setup was excellent.

Theese are very different guitars, I'm very happy with them and don't need and don't want any other.
If one of them were lost or stolen, i would choose the same guitar

Made in 1979. My black beauty has been in my hands since new. The maple neck feels like butter in my hands. Everything on this guitar is stock as purchased, except for the Schecter strap locks, which I highly recommend. I set this one up my self using a jazz guage of strings. This thing came with a custom fit case that might withstand a nuclear blast. I've played it through a least 10 different amps and am still amazed at the versatility of sounds I can get from it.

Right now, I am musical director for my church. We play just about any style of music. To be honest, I haven't use it much because I play bass or synth guitar most of the time and I miss playing it. I been playing for over 35 years. I have played country, country rock, southern rock, motown, oldies, jazz, R&B and metal. If I can't find a good sound on my strat (which has the roland setup, I usually go back to this guitar. I'm seriously considering outfitting it with a midi pickup.

Well the factory setup was over 23 years ago. Through the years, I've changed the string guages and only had to tweak it. I've never touched the neck rod adjustment. Never needed to. The paint has held up to spending 12 years on stage at least twice a week. One of the reasons Les Pauls have been so popular is because they don't seem to age. If it wasn't for the body style of this guitar, you'd probably think it was less than 5 years old. I'd compare the action to vintage Fender guitars (my first real electric was a Mustang)

I've been dealing with Peavey for over 22 years. I do sound system consulting on the side. Their factory repair shop is second to none. The parts department is very responsive and I've never been charged excessively high prices for parts. You can call the service department in Mississippi and get solid advice on all their products. I even repaired a bass amp one time. I called for new Pots (volume/tone controls). The service manager told me they were no longer made. He sent substitute parts with a wiring diagram. It worked fine. Most companies would tell you the amp is obsolete and do nothing else.

I own 5 guitars. My Roland ready Strat, a 1983 Ovation Deluxe Ballader, a Yamaha 12 string, and my T-60..... oh and number five I just purchased.... another T-60 (this one is white). I also have a Peavey fretless Foundation 4 string bass, an Ibanez SD885 5 string bass and a newly purchased Ken Smith BSRB custom 5 string bass. I'm not sure why you can still get the T-60 for such a low price, but I have a feeling that's going to change. If any of these guitars were stolen or lost. I'd just find a way to replace them. Things happen for a reason. I have a friend who has a 1965 Gibson 355, a strat and two ovations. Each of my guitars have their own special sounds and features and so does his. We all are unique and so are these guitars. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I bought this guitar in the early 80's, because I liked the look of it, in many of the country vidios that I seen it in. Then when I got hold of one,I then knew why they where all playing them! Everything about my playing improved, way faster action then the 2x8 I had been playing. Fell in love with the range of different sounds that I could get out of it. My t-60 was the all natural wood finish and has held up very well, one nick in the neck where it fell over on stage on a break, that person now knows not to go near a stage!!!!!

I also recorded and album with it and had NO trouble with it in the studio with noise I replaced the strap buttons with a product called strap locks just for the conveiance. The hardware is showing a little ware where my right hand rested but other than that no problemo. Even the flight case that came with it survived all those years. With the durability comes a bit of a price, it is a little heavy on the sholders after a few hours, but the pleasure is well worth that discomfort and a wider strap solved the lion share of that problem.

Mine has the natural finish (looks very '70s)
Sting through body - hard tail
Came with sturdy plastic case
I bought the guitar new about 1980 - the serial number is 00642727. I have the Peavey Monitor magazine that has an extensive review of the T series guitars (Summer 1983). In the review, it states that the T-60 and T-40 bass were developed in 1976 (BTW the T stands for Technology Series)
I noticed that one reviewer suspected that the T-60 has a short scale neck, this is not the case. The T-60 has a 25 1/2 inch scale neck (most have a 24 3/4 inch scale).

Everything is covered with this guitar. I bought the guitar after hearing it being demonstrated. The guitarist produced a range of sounds from tele and strat sounds to ballsy Les Paul sound. I don't know why others have not duplicated the single to double coil circuitry in their pickups. Just by using the tone controls you can move from what you would swear is a strat to a raunchy humbucker sound. The phase switch is also very useful when getting into country sounds and very convincing Mark Knopfler sounds.
I only need one guitar to suit the range of music I play from Aussie pub rock and pop of the '70 & 80s to blues and modern rock. I must admit though that I have just bought an American Deluxe Strat but it is really only to spoil myself with a fancy new guitar.

I remember the guitar played well out of the box but I was able to improve the action considerably using the setup instructions that came with it. This guitar has individual string height adjustment at the bridge, the neck relief has maintained stablity and there is a neck tilt adjustment (not bad for a guitar that is over 22 years old). The guitar's electronics are shielded as standard. This guitar fits like a glove. I have no thumb on my left hand and my little finger is about half the length it should be - try chording up the neck with a hand like that! This guitar enabled me to do it. This is a very special guitar.

At first sight the 1981 Gloss White T60 looks like a mesh between a Gibson and a Strat, it's body posseses characteristics of both and is suprisingly thin and well contoured. The neck is a thin hard rock maple and features Peaveys dual expanding torsion rods which help keep the neck in perfect alignment and pitch. Sealed die-cast peavey tuners, keep the near 20 year old guitar in perfect tune, string through body/hard tail bridge enhanced sustain and guitar harmonics, wide low frets made chording a breeze and harmonics just lift off the frets. 2 volume/ 2 tone configuration featuring a VCCS(voice contour control system) wiring, which allows the humbicking pickups to spilt into single coil mode(7-10) or go full humbucker(1-7). And an Aluminum/Metal, nut that helps make notes sing and chime.

I mainly play 80's rock-Skid Row/Van Halen, Jazz, BLues, and Satriani. Although the majority of the bands I have named use Floyd Rose pitch bends, nose dive whammy etc..., don't let the guitars some what simple features-hardtail bridge, fool you. The guitar literally shreds and smokes, or can sweetly sing and soar. I use it with a visual sound H20, Ibanez ts9, Phase 90, and line it straight through to a Peavey Ultra 212. The guitar has probably one of the most versitle sounds, it doesn't sound like a Gibson, it doesn't sound like a Fender, instead it sounds like a T60.

This is the one category I thought I could add something to that hasn't been covered by other reviewers. I use this guitar exclusively for slide work, and it really is one of the best electrics around for this. The single/hum blade pickups are perfect for slide work, and the out of phase switch can give you an unbelievable, raw, old AM radio sound. With the clever switching you can put a little muddy humbucker on the bridge and have a clear soaring lead tone on the neck. Incredible what you can do with the sounds here with just a turn of the knob. It's a huge slab of guitar and it gives you a huge sound. Put on the heaviest strings you can find and a slap on a heavy brass slide and you'll be able to peel the paint off walls.

This thing was built to be a slide guitar. The neck has a great feature with an easy to use tilt screw to adjust the tilt of the neck. It has a relatively flat fretboard and the bridge is a great fully adjustable big chunk of metal. Two allen wrenches and 10 minutes and you will have the perfect set up for slide. Give it a 10 for the tilt screw if nothing else.

You could use this guitar to drive fence posts, put a strap back on and you probably wouldn't even need to tune it. I defy anyone to find a guitar that was built more solidly than this. If a guitar was ever needed for some industrial use, this would be the one. The T-60 I have has a deep dent in the back, like it was hit with a hatchet, but it didn't even scratch the finish, just put a big dent in it. 50 years from now you'll still be able to find these monsters in almost perfect shape.

Great variety of sound. With the tone knobs set at 10, you are in single coil mode. At 7, the second coil kicks in to give you a humbucker sound. Below 7, the tone control acts as a conventional tone control. There is also a phase switch which gives you a more hollow sound. This is a quiet guitar - very little noise even in single coil mode. Very full, rich sound with the humuckers. Not super high gain pickups, but that's not my style anyway.

Some problems here, but nothing unusual for a twenty year old guitar. The knobs and switches are a little noisy. The bridge pickup by itself is very low volume with the phase switch off, but normal volume with the phase switch on. This shouldn't happen - the phase switch should only make a difference with both pickups active. A little contact cleaner should fix this. Outside of that, there are only a few dings - this is in great shape for an old guitar. Very nice looking wood (natural is one of my favorite finishes), with lots of grain showing. No real attempt at bookmatching the pieces.

I started playing in 1965, but took a long time off (playing primarily keyboard). I've been playing guitar seriously the last few years. My other main guitars are Fenders (Strat plus Deluxe, Am. Std. Strat, Deluxe Nashville Tele, Tex Mex Tele Special, Deluxe Super Strat), Route 101 (Solimar, Rincon), Parker (NiteFly, P-38), and Gibson, Taylor, Fernandes, etc. I like the sound of this guitar a lot - my only issue is the weight.
First, let me say that I hate vintage guitars. You are typically paying thousands of dollars for a guitar that cost a few hundred new and has accumulated years of problems. However, I made an exception in the case of the Peavey T-60. Even new, how do you find a US-built guitar with very flexible controls, innovative electronics, and great customer support for under $200? You would typically get a cheap plywood guitar of dubious construction. These guitars deserve the great reviews they've gotten. If you can find one at anywhere near this price, run out and grab it.

1982 T-60. Wonderful piece! Rock maple neck. Sunburst body. Stunning! What sound do you wanna hear? Low is regular- up to 7 is humbucker- all the way up is single coil!! No one should ever replace these! (1 quality built to last forever , 2 you can achieve so many sounds) 2 pickups. The case is plastic, but very sturdy!! Ash bodys on these babys (the sustain goes on and on and on...)2 volume-2 tone-a switch (up is neck pickup-middle is both-down is bridge pickup). Other switch is out of phase (haven't found a good use for it, but it's there if you like that).

I use a studio chorus 70 (Peavey amp....bought the amp first). Effects are built in. THIS IS THE BEST GUITAR IN VALUE THAT THERE IS. No big names promote it (It's not made anymore, so you pay $0.00 advertizing to anyone). My friend has a VERY valuable Strat, and he likes my Peavey. My other friend is an engineer, He just loves my T-60. Quality parts. Sounds any way you want! Just play with the variables built into it! Strat to a Les Paul to its own unique sound, you adjust it (ex. I like the bridge pickup by itself with the humbucker sound..........with just a tich of single coil thrown in.......they recommend the neck pickup for rhythm.......and the bridge pickup for lead............I like it just the opposite of that!! I play in a house band at a jam nite and get great compliments for the sound!)

I got it for $40 in a pawn shop Uptown New Orleans around 1988/89. It's still missing a knob. But it all works pretty well. I use it straight prosessing only via onboard FX on a Roland VS-1680. The first great guitar I had was a Peavey T-15 fifteen years ago.
Always wanted another, but we don't get too many over here in the UK.
Was playing a Hofner Verifin in my garage band (great for permanent feedback!), but it just wasn't strong enough to gig regularly.
Wanted a guitar that looked equally as cool that I could gig with.
Bought guitar.
Band split up.

I'm the original owner of my T-60, bought it new in 1979 or 1980, I can't remember the exact year. It is a US made guitar and previous people have given the basic specs. Mine is natural finish with a maple neck, seemingly the most common edition, although they did come in other colors and with rosewood fingerboards. I still have the original case, it has held up well. My guitar still has the original electronics. I did have a middle strat pickup installed for a while, but I bought a replacement pickguard and had it returned to original recently. The strat pickup was an older Bill Lawrence L-250 hum cancelling model, and it did not have the output to blend with the Peavey humbuckers. They have a fair amount of output. Unlike an earlier reviewer, I know my guitar is made of ash. It is fairly heavy, but not as heavy as most Les Pauls I have owned/played.

Let's face it, most musicians are brand snobs. We think we have to have brand name stuff, and until the Van Halen Wolfgangs and Steve Cropper models, not many pros played Peavey guitars. That said, this is a fine instrument. Roy Nichols, Merle Haggards former lead guitarist used one on the road in the 80's, and I have emailed him and he said he liked the T-60. The guitar can get a wide variety of sounds, and it is very quiet, even in the single coil mode. The ability to roll the coils off gradually gives greater tonal potential than just an switch. One feature that one reviewer touched on is the phase switch. Yes, you can use it with both pickups as most people are accustomed to, although to maximize the dual pickup out of phase sound, you have to tweak the volume controls. Both controls set equally cuts out too much low end, and really doesn't even come close to approximating a Strat's out of phase sound. But, use the bridge pickup only, and throw the phase switch and you get a gentle, but very usable out of phase sound, that has slightly less high end, but does have tons of character. The maple fingerboard and low wide frets are a little harder to bend strings on than my rosewood fingerboard Strat with jumbo frets, so I use a 9-46 set of strings and that works out nicely. The capacitor that rolls off low end when you decrease volume is also very useable, and even with the pickups in humbucking mode, they stay very well defined when the volume is reduced. I play this guitar through a Peavey Heritage amp (see my review for that too), an original black face 65 Fender Twin and an original black face Fender Vibrolux and it sounds great. I use mainly Boss effects, with a TS-9 Tubescreamer. This guitar sounds fine. It rivals my main axe, a 1982 Fender Strat with EMGs and the David Gilmour electronics.

The guitar was set up well at the factory, and my repairman keeps it in great shape. I did install a smaller hardtail bridge some years ago to accomodate a Hipshot string bender, but the original bridge was fine. I've just kept the replacement bridge on there cause it's more compact and in case I ever want to put the Hipshot back on there. The pots have gotten scratchy, but they clean up nicely.

This guitar is an iron horse. It will be here when many others are gone. The finish is excellent. It does have a tacky, funky vibe, but it looks like a working man's guitar. I would and have play this guitar without a backup..sure it's always wise to have one, but I trust this guitar.

Its ash, I have know idea where that one reviewer came up with oak. the grain has been accented and its not swamp ash (which is why its heavey). I have owned three of these. one was a tobacco sunburst with a rosewood fretboard and the blade style pickups with the contoured body and the oval case, beuatiful guitar, id eighties (still had the metal nut and the small switches, the later ones had bone nuts and heavey duty toggles). I also owned a 78-79 PAF in the rectangular case, I remember stripping it with electrical tape to look like Van Halen's Kramer (i was young okay) I bought that new in 79. Aftre I had sold both of these I figured out I was an idiot and started lookig for another . I fond a new in the case 79 PAF a guy had got for his birthdayand promptly stored in his closet for 10 years, it still had the the little manila envelope with the allen stocks in it. dead mint. but I fired from my job and sold it to one of my guitar students for $225, 7 years later he called my up and as a poor college student sold it to me for $100, he swithed to bass and never played it. so now i have a dead mint PAF natural finish t-60 in the rectangular case. I'm going to be buried with it.

As everybody says it is very versatile. It is not a metal guitar. the output of the pickups is not hot but then neiher is the output of a Les Paul with PAF pickups. the strongpoint of this guitar is its clean sound. Chorus was made for the sounds in this guitar. the single coil/ out of phase position is eeriely thin but that can be very cool clean , distorted no, but hey thats why the guitar has other pickup options. here's an little known trick, go to single coil bridge pickup and switch on he phase switch, it acts as a slight coil tap (it can only be heard in a clean setting)

this was a very ugly guitar when it came out kinda looks like what the Russians would have made out of a strat, kinda guitar by commitee, you know like a camel is a horse made by commitee. well the early natural finish block cut one's look like a camel version of a strat. other the years though it has taken on a retro kinda look and the natural finish is very rustic. the bass version the t-40 (which is a better bass than the t-60 is a guitar) looks exactly the same but some how in a bass format looks cool in a punk bass sorta way, they are killer basses.

Just wanted to say that the user review just below this one states that the guitar body is made of Oak. In the owner's manual it clearly says the body is made of "thick select ash with grain filled to accentuate grain characteristics". I'm not saying the user review is incorrect, just that it may be that the early T-60's are made of Ash where the later T-60's are Oak. Mine was made before 5-21-79. It is the natural wood grain body, not the painted version. Serial number 00345705.The case is like a Samsonite suit case, but is a little tougher. The neck is made of Hard Rock Maple with a shiny clear finish. The wood grains really stand out and look great!

I would however, buy another one. There is nothing about this guitar that I don't like. Anyone would fall in love with it from the first time you played one. It stays in tune. I've heard that many other more expensive guitars do not. I seldom need to tune it and I play it at least three times a week. I feel this guitar is way under priced. I can't believe people are finding them for $275 and less on the web.

I bought three in excellent condition. First at $147, second at $168, third at $235. They are identical, except the first one had its original HSC included. Reviewers say the guitar is made of ash, which is not correct. Everyone I've bought is made of very cheap oak. The differences are simple. Oak breaks your back, ash doesn't; oak dissipates sound and turns it muddy, ash doesn't; oak is cheap and plentiful (I burn 3 cord of it per year), ash is not. So if you want a VERY HEAVY guitar, with a big body and a somewhat muddy Les Paul sound, here ya go! My rating is based on value for the price, but tempered a bit because the setup is too complex to change quickly from one sound to the next.

Great variety of sound, but again, don't expect the clear ringing sound of a $3,000 LP for under three hundred bucks. This guitar certainly is the one to own over any Fender Standard strat or tele. And the little devil is going rapidly up in price, while those things are heading south.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

Finish is poor on the body, but great on the neck. Fit at the neck to body joint is pretty bad, but fretting and overall alignment of all else doesn't suffer at all. And, unlike many off-the-shelf models, this guitar can be set up for action from very high to extremely low (set it high to beat the hell out of it, no buzz at all).

Somewhat unique construction; kind of like an SG, but with a nice
thin neck that has medium frets. Every other neck I touch feels like
a bowling pin. Quite heavy solid ash, you can really feel it resonate
when you play it. Strings through body hardtail bridge (who needs
a tremelo anyways?). Wiring is very cool; turning the tone knobs past
7 engages a coil split in the corresponding pickup. I never got to play it with the stock pickups. Mine has a Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck in the bridge and some sort of Gibson in the neck. It came with a nice tough plastic (think rubbermade) hard shell case.
Sound

This guitar can makes some sounds which I've never heard any other make. I use it with a Real Tube overdrive pedal and a Small Clone chorus sometimes into a Crate G60 solid state amp. It can go from screeching highs (probably more to do with my bridge pickup) to really punchy bright (its good at this) to really forceful stomping distortion. For me, it barks more than it growls, which I suspect has a lot to do with my pickups. It can do very pretty clean acoustic sounding stuff too. It really has a wonderful range of sounds.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The action is very nice. I've only felt better on well set up Les Pauls. The hardware is all very high quality. The finish is a fairly good sunburst. It seems much more durable than your average finish.

When I got mine it was somewhat (ab)used. Finish was beginning to crack a little around the neck, which was surprising to me since it looked like you would have to leave it out in the rain and sun for days to get it to do that. Also, the pots are a bit sticky if I leave it sitting around for too long (which is a crime anyways) and the pickguard is kind of warped. But, for a fairly aged guitar (has to be at least 20 years old I guess) which looks to have been somewhat abused, it is still good looking and a joy to play. I plan on refurbishing it a bit...it deserves it after 20 years.

The best. Peavey excells in this area, much better than any other company I have dealt with. They even have a message board that is monitored and updated by their support staff (Way to go A.J.!!) It can be found at http://support.peavey.com/~guitars/
I would rate this an 11, but the ratings only go up to 10.

I found this guitar in a pawn shop and it had been BADLY mistreated by it's previous owner. He/she?? had covered it with white oil based house paint, and then attached the parts before the paint had time to cure (yuck!) the pickup did not work and the phase switch was broken.
I have so far, refinished it . . . It's unique because it was originally a painted model and I refinished it clear. so you can see the "cutting board" pattern if you look closely. I fixed the electronics and replaced the phase switch. I was able to get a schematic from one of the posters at the Peavey support message board (thanks, Chevy!) The previous owner had even "shielded" the control cavity with TIN FOIL!! Unreal!
Anyway, suffice it to say that the guitar resurrected wonderfully. It is a jammin axe with butter smooth action. I purchased a GK 250ML recently and the T-60 sounds phenomonal through it.
I would definitely replace it if stolen and I plan to buy at least 2 or 3 more. I'm even going to get my 5 year old a T-15 to learn on.
I have been playing for 25 years, all styles of music and currently play Christian Rock/Jazz. This guitar is more than you would need for just about any gig.
This is IMHO the best value in a guitar available on the market today. they go for between $100-$300 on eBay all of the time.

I bought my Peavey T-60 about 10 yrs ago in a pawn shop. I was'nt really looking for a guitar at the time...but i saw it and thought I'd take a chance. Its one of the best investments I've ever made. I have a Les Paul Studio which is very nice, and and old Guild Starfire IV in great condition...but when I get together with the guys to jam...probably 8 out of 10 times, I pick up the T-60. It plays and sounds great!! It takes awhile to get the sound you want (so many knobs and switches) but once you get a handle on it...WOW.

You can get almost any sound you want out of this guitar. I play through a Peavey Heritage 130w amp at home (too big to carry around) and a Fender Sidekick 25 when I go out. Sounds great. Neck is maple, with 21 frets...perfect for getting around on fast. The only thing Im not too hot on, is the weight...hurts the shoulder after awhile...but its nothing compared to the weight of the Les Paul.

The T-60's action is very good. It stays in tune better than any guitar I've ever owned. If you buy one....you won't be sorry.

I called Peavey and gave them the serial # of my T-60 to find out when it was made. They said their records back then werent too great, and the best they could tell me was it was made in the early 80s.

Solid tuners, (original, and they hold a tune for something like 10ish hrs. of play) Sweet looking finish. (Natural Ash) Great flexibility. Between the 3-way switch and the tone pot feature that switches between single coils and humbuckers you can get just about any sound - esp. when you throw in a phase switch.
Some will complain about the lack of a whammy/vibrato. STOP BEING LAZY AND USE YOUR LEFT HAND TO GET VIBRATO!! If you're trying to do a "metal dive" then you don't deserve to play guitar anyway. Has two humbuckers, but can independently be switched to single coils. (as already noted) The neck on this sucker is my biggest gripe. I have big hands, and the neck is really stinking thin. My wrist is taking it HARD! If I was motivated enough to do something crazy like install a different neck, (although I'll miss the sweet WIDE frets and tuners, as well as sweet early peavey-logo headstock) I would never shop for another guitar - except another T-60.
I almost forgot. The guy that said this thing looks like a strat's "fat hillbilly cousin" nail |
