I play this into a blackheart Little Giant Combo with a variety of effects pedals. With the stock pickups it sounds pretty good. The pickups are an imitation of a Duncan JB style pickup and offer very nice cleans and desent overdriven sounds. If the gain gets too high, the pickups do get very muddy. This is something that I have noticed using a variety of amps. Overall, out of the box the guitar will easily produce a good rock, hard rock, and blues tone and will passibly pull off early metal tones. I swapped out the pickups with two SD 59s and since then I've been very happy with the result
The volume nobs are functional and work to clean up the sound without having to mess with your amp settings. The tone nob, however, doesn't do much. There is no noticeable effect on the tone until you roll the nob down to about 2, at which point almost all the treble is cut out. I might swap the tone pot and see if that helps. Oh, I dont really use the coil taps much, but its nice to know that its there.

I bought this second hand, so I can't speak to its origional condition. The neck, along with the rest of the guitar, has almost and identical feel to my epi '57 reissue. The only difference is down at the neck joint the Shecter is much clunkier and, despite the quasi double cutaway, makes reaching the higher frets a bit cumbersom. Could just be my guitar, but lowering the profile at the neck joint would make this vastly more playable. However, despite the fact taht the necks have similar profiles, I find that my shechter plays a little faster than my epi. Might be that I've just done a better job keeping the shecter oiled and clean...who knows. But any way, the neck joint and the tone pot are really my only gripes with the guitar, hence the 8 rating.
The finish is pretty impressive. Even for getting it second hand, i couldn't find any major flaws in the finish. Even the guts of it are well taken care of. Its a beautiful guitar with the added benifit of being something other than an lp or sg. Its also a very comfortable guitar to play. The neck is a tad heavy, but genearlly I'd say its easier to play both sitting and standing thatn an LP.
Reliability/Durability
:10
No issues...the tuners are fantastic; i've never had an issue with it going out of tune. Also, the output jack has stayed securely fastened and I dont see any potential for the tone/volume pots to break any time soon. Its a very solid guitar and has been gigged heavily with no issues.

Overall, I've been very please with this guitar. For the price, you will get a solid, toneful and reliable axe that deosn't look like what everyone else is playing. Its increadibly versitile and at the price you can probably afford to give it some upgrades. It does have some room for improvement, most of which you can do yourself.
I won't go so far as to say that I've played even many of the guitars in this price range, but the ones I have played don't can't keep up with this. I'd strongly recommend it for anyone needing a good gutiar to gig with or looking to move up from the entry level guitar.

this is good for hard rock and heavy metal. i was running this through a peavey valveking 112, and it was just beautiful. metallica, sepultura, riffs are just SCREAMING to get out of this guitar. the cleans sounded alright to me, but i guess they could've been a little better. might've been the amp's problem, not the guitar's.
this thing is dripping with tone. you can use the coil pot to get or lose some gain.

the guitar at the guitar shop was perfect. i fiddled around with it for a solid hour and a half and it was just great. the action was nice, the finish was flawless, the body was immaculate, and it stayed in tune pretty well with a really high turn ratio.

This is a mahogany body with a maple top. Mine is finished in vintage White with chrome hardware. For all the rest of the details you can go to Schecter's website, or read some of the other reviews( Which I suggest).

I play in a Progressive metal/ melodic Metalcore band and this thing rips. I love the sound I get from this guitar. The HB102's aren't bad, but Im an EMG fan so an 81/85 set is in the works. I have gigged this guitar many times and always get complements on its tone, and I play through a crappy Line6 Spider 2 HD 150 Head, the saving grace is the Fender FM4x12 cab. It rocks. All in all I have played numerous guitars in the 500 to 1000 dollar price range, and few instruments even come close.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:10
The action was a little high for me, as I like to really fly across the neck. One little adjustment and this thing became My favorite axe. It is really put together well. When you pick it up it feels solid, not like some other guitars that feel like a stiff breeze would blow them apart.

This guitar is a rock. I have gigged with this guitar many many times, It has been straight from a gig to the studio with no problems at all. I would gig this without a backup without even thinking about it, as unless I broke a string, Im confident that nothing else would give me any trouble. The finish is real strong, I have bumped into things, including my bandmates while getting crazy at shows and their is neither a ding nor scratch to be found.

I have had this guitar about 6 months now, and If it were stolen I would hunt down the person who did it and slaughter them and their entire bloodline. I love this guitar. The other guitarist in my band has a Kramer Vanguard Fr404s, with a set of EMG 81/85's in it and this guitar is neck and neck with it as it comes from the factory. This is a solid machine from the get go. Don't let the reviews deter you if you play anything other than punk or emo crap. I have DR hi voltage 52-10 gauge strings on mine and our band plays in c standard tuning and this thing kills. It is perfect for heavy ass metal. All in all A great Rig and I am glad every time I open that case and see it in all its glory.

Mines black with gold hardware, duncan designed pickups and grover tuners. this guitar has an original look. i do not know one other person who has this guitar. i dont use the coil tap on it, but it sounds exactly like single coils. i also plan on switching the humbuckers. they aren't bad, i just want this thing to sound AMAZING since its my only guitar. this guitar has a nice neck, and really cool fretboard inlays. the only downside is that since its black, there is fingerprints all over the thing in ever picture of me onstage!
Sound
:10
this thing sounds great! it is in no way thin sounding, nor muffled. i play with a good amount of distortion on original songs, but if im jamming at home, i play anything from third eye blind to escape the fate on this thing. versatile!!
Action, Fit, & Finish
:8
the actions okay, i've never messed with it. i adjusted the pickups to my own liking. someone else said something about tuning to drop d and having that string pop out. they are right! it even happens in standard tuning. you've gotta do something about that, it's happened at every show i've played. its not good when you have to stop playing and snap your string back into place on the bridge. not that big of a deal to fix, though.

this guitar has been my only for well over a year now. i traded an esp ec 50 for it, and i have never regretted it for a second. i changed the strap buttons for the dimarzio straplock system. you can NEVER go wrong with that. the only thing you might want to do when you first get this guitar is take of the nut where you plug the cable in and put some thread lock on it, because otherwise its going to come loose all the time. thats a probelem with alot of guitars though. i would definetly gig this thing with no backup, i have never had ANY problems, except for the string popping off of the bridge. keep your hardware clean because mine got really dirty and the nasty stuff wont come off!

This guitar is one of my favorites. I have played many different guitars from les pauls to fender strats and this thing is just as good as any especially for its price. Pretty standard rock machine, two humbuckers, 3 way switch, but this has minus one tone knob, and a coil tap. Although I have no use for it with the style i play, it was a pretty cool feature that I have seen very little of since the Gibson Nighthawk was around. (i'm sure PRS has them, but honestly, who can afford that!)
Sound
:9
A lot of people spit on these pick-ups. They are Duncan Design, which is the under brand of Seymour Duncan. Think Squier to Fender. But for the genre I play, hardcore/indie/ very Refused rock, it works wonderfully. I ran mine through an Orange AD30htc head and an Orange 2x12 cab, and it was AWESOME! It is not a CRISP sound, and a little muddy, but not so bad that I instantly wanted to change the pickups. In fact, unless i had something better laying around I wouldn't change them.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:5
Action: pretty decent, but you will need to file the saddles down if you play in drop D, that D string won't stay put to save your life! Last gig it popped out 4 times. Unless you play like a statue, this is a problem.
Fit: great, or crap, depending on how hard you move, this guitar gives you guitar burn like NO OTHER! In fact that is why I'm getting rid of it, because I tear up my arm when I want to move around on stage.
Finsh: two words... bullet proof. This finish is solid, and doesn't seem to scratch easily (i.e. your guitar pic )

Overall it is a pretty decent guitar for the money, but I think you can do better if you find something used in that price range. Great sounds, solid body. But it will hurt you, and it will drop tune. And the saddle issue.
The saddles really piss me off, because that would have been very easy to fix on the production level. But hey, what are you going to do?

My setup goes tempest to planet wave pedal tuner to tremonti wha to maxon od 9 to a single rec with a boss eq in the loop. The tone on this guitar is nice, very thick les paulish territory, I'm not big on the coil tapped tone, but I never really use that anyway so whatever. I have an extra jb bridge and breed neck pickup laying around and to be honest when I bought this I had full intentions of swapping the pups out right away. However I took it to a band practice(metal and hardrock, from GNR to Godsmack to Megadeth) and it sounded fantastic, thick but not muddy, my lead tone is amazing to me, just what I have in my head. And the cleans are crystal. It might be that I'm just playing through pretty good gear but the the pickups are staying in for now. Everyone in the band complemented it's tone.

This is where this guitar really shines. I just got a gig in a local popular metal cover band that pays pretty well. I also have my own original project going(more rock oriented but still heavy). I was going into the store with the idea of buying one really nice high end guitar that could be my number one stage axe. I already have a few charvels, and explorer and a esp, that all play "nice" but aren't really perfect. I tried out some high end prs's les pauls and the such and while some were really gorgeous none really stuck out to me. I saw this tempest on the wall, it was the same build in woods that I wanted, mahogany maple body, mahogany rosewood neck, 24 3/4 inch scale, same control lay out as my explorer, so I figured I'd mess with it for a couple of minutes. I was floored with how well it played! It seriously smoked every other guitar there. I don't know if I got a good one or what but this guitar has the lowest action I've ever played on with out it fretting out or buzzing. Plays waaayyyyy to good for it's price, or any price for that matter. I did put on strap locks but every guitarist that gigs should have them, when are some builders just going to have them stock...
Reliability/Durability
:9
Seems just as sturdy as any other high end guitar I've played, pots aren't scratchy hardware seems reliable. I've only had it for about 4 weeks now, but I don't think it'll let me down. I gig with 4-5 guitars all the time so I can't comment about not having a back up.

I've been playing 11 years. Have played well over 50-60 shows, some in big clubs and some have been opening for national bands. I have a lot of other nice guitars as stated above, and had other higher end gibsons in the past that ended up getting sold. Bottom line this thing is a keeper. It plays better then any guitar I've ever owend and sounds great. I might still switch the pickups to see if it can even get better, but I'm gonna stick with aint broke dont fix it policy for now. I'm past the honeymoon period with this and am not a schecter fanboy (I was actually kind of biased against them prior to this one) but this is not a great guitar for the money, it's simply just a great guitar.

Mahogany body, maple top, two humbuckers, two volume control, one tone control, three way switch, coil tap, set neck.

This guitar fits my playing style very well. I play an instrumental post-rock band, along the lines of Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Pelican, Floor, etc. On my own time I like playing anything from BB King to 80's Metallica, John Frusciante, Mastodon, and all points in between.
I'm playing this guitar through an Ernie Ball VP Jr. and Ibanez Tube screamer into a Carvin Legacy half-stack, with a Boss Chorus, Voodoo Lab Tremolo, and Digitech X series digidelay in the effects loop.
The guitar is only noisy on the split coil settings, but that's to be expected from single coils. This guitar is definitely capable of getting the rich, warm tones of a Les Paul, but it suffers a bit due to the stock Duncan Designed HB-102 pickups.
The pickups aren't all that bad, but they definitely aren't all that great either. They sound very muddy and lifeless to me, as I also have a Schecter C-1 with real Duncans, a JB/'59 set which sound much better. I'm sure this guitar will give me just what I'm looking for tonally after I replace the stock pickups.
As for the variety of tones, the neck is warm, deep, and fat, the bridge is warm and full with a good midrange bite. This will only improve with real Duncans. The split coil settings are OK, but nothing amazing.
I was looking for a Les Paul like guitar, and this is the best I could find in my price range. Once the pickups are replaced, I'll be set. Even with the stock pickups, this guitar walks all over an Epiphone Les Paul.
Just for the lame pickups, I'm only giving this guitars sound a 7 for now. If this had come with real Seymour Duncans, I would rate it higher.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:7
The guitar was set up well from the factory, although this is a hard thing to judge since everyone like their guitar set up a little differently. The intonation was spot-on, no fret buzz, straight neck, but the action was a little high for my taste. Not a big deal as I can adjust all of this to my liking.
There are a few minor flaws, all cosmetic. There are a few sloppy spots on the binding, but you have to really look it over to see them. The truss rod cover doesn't fit properly either, it just misses the nut by enough so that it moves around a bit and looks sloppy.
The finish, however, is excellent.
These are pretty small things that I can live with though, chances are no one other than me will ever notice them. It's a mass produced, mid-priced Korean made guitar, so you really can't expect absolute perfection.
Reliability/Durability
:9
It seems pretty solid and reliable, the tone-pros bridge and grover tuners are good hardware and should last a long time. Strap buttons are pretty solid, but I immediately replaced them with Schaller strap locks. I like all of my guitars to have strap locks just in case. I've had bad experiences without them.
I haven't had the guitar long enough to judge its reliability, but Schecters are reliable and well made so I'm not worried. I would use it without a backup if I had to, but it's good to have a backup weather you're playing a $200 Squier or a $4,000 Gibson just because you never know.

I've been playing for about 14 and a half years. I've tried out countles guitars. Gibson, Fender, Prs, Ibanez, ESP, etc. This is really a great guitar, and a great value. For a guitar between $500-$1,000, Schecter is hard to beat. I love the feel of the neck on this guitar, the 24.75" scale, set neck, mahogany neck and body, maple top, cool inlays, bla blah blah. The only thing I really don't care for are the Duncan Designed pickups, but upgrading to real Seymour Duncans really isn't all that expensive or difficult, so it's not that big of a problem. Overall, I'm giving this guitar an 8.

Brand new 2006 Tempest Custom, Black Cherry Red. Typical features: 22 jumbo frets, dual humbuckers (Duncan Designed HB-102), and a nice TonePros stopbar bridge. Great Grover tuners. Two volume knobs and one tone knob; the tone knob can be pulled up for split coil action. Set neck into a mahogany body with a beautiful maple top, and cream binding all around. Looks like a what a Les Paul would if it grew a Strat-style cutaway on the top side.
Sound
:9
I'm mostly into hardcore/metal so I wanted something that was built solid and could ROCK OUT, but also could clean up well for other purposes. I am running it through a number of effects into a Fender Deluxe 85 1x12 combo, but I can't wait to hear it on the new Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier head I ordered!
The sound overall is pretty smooth and even from the Duncan Designed HB-102 pickups, which are supposed to emulate a JB in the bridge and a '59 in the neck. (People rip on the stock pickups, but they aren't THAT bad...) I wanted something hotter in the bridge, so I soldered in an SH-6 Duncan Distortion, and it freaking screams. Great harmonics out of the whole setup. I'll replace the neck pickup with a real '59 sometime soon.
The split coil option is rather unusual for a guitar of this body style and in this price range, but it's a thoughtful touch. Plenty of tonal options available. The electronics are nice and quiet, unless you decide you want to trainwreck it with feedback, which I'm assuming every guitarist has been tempted to do live at least ONCE in his musical career.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:10
This guitar feels so natural! Everything feels the way it should--you know that feeling I'm talking about when you're playing that special axe. The cream binding on the neck is a sheer delight. Cosmetically perfect. I thrash a little bit when I play, so I unscrewed the knob off of the pickup selector, and have had no problems accidentally knocking it out of position.
I put on heavier gauged strings, Ernie Ball Power Slinky's (11-48), so I needed to raise the action a little bit on the low E side and readjust the intonation, but everything is where it should be. I thought I would have problems with the nut being able to fit the [slightly] heavier gauged strings, but no worries. The Grover tuners are the best and most solid I've ever had on a guitar.
The body style, and especially the maple top, is just gorgeous. I'm not gonna lie--when I'm not playing it, I'm most often staring at it. Baby's got curves.
Reliability/Durability
:10
Some of my inspiration for purchasing this model came from seeing Jeremy Talley of The Bled rock the guts out of it live. Like I mentioned before, I'm definitely an aggressive player, and I like to get physical. This guitar is rock solid and can withstand the thrashing. I replaced the strap buttons with Dunlop Strap Locks because I've had good experiences with them--and bad experiences without.
For those of you who so far have said that this feels like a Les Paul, yes, it's true, and no, it's not... The body shape essentially feels like an LP, but the weight is LIGHTER. If you can heft an LP, you can throw a Tempest. Still a rock machine, though. I was pleasantly surprised.
I would never want to gig without a backup, but I do. This guitar is built very well and I expect to have no [natural] problems with the wood or the finish.

This is where I have a beef with Schecter. I ordered it in the middle of February from a small music shop near my house. The guitar was on back order from their factory in Korea and I was told that it would be in my hands in the middle of March. So I wait... It doesn't come. I called Schecter directly and asked them what's up. The gentleman on the phone explained that their factory had been going by slowly and the guitar should arrive in another two to three weeks. So I wait, only more impatiently this time around. Three weeks goes by, it hasn't come in, so I call Schecter back. They have made the Tempest models in black and white, but the black cherry red was going to take longer, so another two weeks... AAAAARRRGGH! I finally got it, two months after I was originally supposed to. I don't know what happened. I'm guessing they got flooded with orders for their recent line of "30th Anniversary" models or something. Oh well. I had to deal with my impatience, and now I have the guitar in my possession.
At any rate, every time I called them I had to leave a message, but received quick correspondence from their Customer Support rep. Other than the factory-backup issue, I found everything else about them to be very impressive.

I've been playing for six years. My previous guitar before this one is an Epiphone G-400 that I've played to death. Before that, it was a Squier Affinity Strat. I'm working my way up in my practice regimen and with the gear I'm purchasing--I'll be getting a Mesa Dual Rec soon. This may sound odd, but I was looking for a more midpriced guitar like this one instead of something like a $1200+ Gibson, so I could be a little more at ease with wearing it out from use. Plus, I think that with a good set of pickups, it can sound just as good as anything else. A top class instrument for a working class price.
Schecter make great guitars and their necks are truly incredible. The Tempest Custom model is particularly eye-catching and I've been receiving some great compliments on it. Get one! They're rad!

rock music--> hardcore, emo, alternative, some blues even
pickups--> duncan designed sound great, nice and crunchy, big sound. Little to no feedback from teh pickups. dont really sound muddy. suit the types of music i play perfectly.
compared--> i own a gibson sg standard, and a gibson les paul as well. i bought this to get something that sounded different, plus i wanted something that can have a single coil in the neck, which you can get with the coil tap. I like it better than the les paul by far, but it cant be compared to the sg... totally different guitars.

plays beautifuly set up great right out of the box from the factory. Gibson and fender forgot what it's like to make a quality guitar at a good price so I turned to schecter. The pickups are superior to any other in the price range. I should know I got a loaner ephi les paul for a month while i was waiting for my guitar. The ephiphone felt like it was 50 different pieces glued together. the pickups on that thing were a joke it was like listening to a static on a radio. Can't believe they want 550 for an ephi les paul. The schecter is a far better guitar and is in a different league. My cousin has a 1974 sg and the schecter pickups are better. More definative and crunchy. Now my brother has a nice gibson les paul with a 5A flame top that he payed top dollar for with burst buckers. yeah the pickups are better but i'm not impressed with those either. The schecter is balanced better for playing standing up and is easier to grab below the 12th. I'm going swap out the pickups for lindy fralins. I play out of an all tube 80watt 2x12 combo made by traynor ycv80. I've played it out of a bunch of fender tube amps and a mesa. It's real thin out of a fender. the pickups are more single than double because of there low power out put. but overall i'd give them a 6. check out traynor amps if you get a chance..

the fit and finish is nice. looks nice and wet out of the box and hopefully the white ages nicely. love the tuners stays in tune. tone pro bridge rules. frets and neck are finished nicely. Awesome for korea. guitar chord jack came loose like ever fender i've ever owned so can say it's perfect.

playing for 11 years. I know my gear. Worth checking this guitar out. I'm not a metal head though which seems to be what schecter markets there guitars toward. I'm a radiohead, wilco, frusciante, Neil Young type guy. So if your like me don't let schecter's metal head rep turn you away from a good low cost alternative to fender/gibson. Plan on replacing the pickups if your a serious player. I would have been very happy with them 5 or 6 years ago or if i had a solid state amp. Over all they get me by, I just always want to sound better, ya know?

It kicks for the most part. If you're serious about your tone, you'll replace the Duncan Designed pickups with something else. What depends on your style of music. For rock, a Duncan JB in the bridge and '59 in the neck are a good choice. Metal users should install the EMG Zakk Wylde set.
This is actually my second Tempest. My first one had the Duncan Designed P-90's. I replaced those with Dimarzio Super Distortions. Serious tone with those.
The guitar is very similar in tone to a Les Paul but a bit more comfortable I feel.
My only complaint is that I wish this guitar had a zero heel like the Schecter C1's and some of there other guitars. It can be a bit tough (but no tougher than a Les Paul or PRS) to access the upper frets.

I love this guitar. What other reason could there be for buying a second one. The shape is a bit different and I've found that most folks either love it or hate it. It's a bit more comfortable to handle than a Les Paul when sitting down. The balance and shape seem to put it in a better position. The contoured top is gorgeous. The coil split is a nice feature (my first didn't have that). Personally, if you're looking at an Epiphone Les Paul copy, I think you'd be better off getting this guitar. The quality is so much better, the sound (even stock) is much better and plus you won't have to worry about having the same guitar as every other Tom, Dick and Harry.

2004 korean made solidbody, Mahogany body with Maple top, Set Mahogany neck, two duncan design pickups, tonepros tune o matic bridge and tailpiece, Grover machineheads, 3 way selector, two volumes and one push pull tone pot for coil taps. All in all not too complex to be unreliable but enough to make it fairly flexible...

I mainly play punk and metal and this guitar suits both perfectly, pickups sound great distorted or clean with a good balance between the bass, midrange and treble, this guitar has even more bass than an epiphone les paul but its much more controlled and never woolly like a paul can be, the neck pickup has a great sound for lead work and even with the coil tap activated you can get a great distortion sound, this would be a great guitar for anyone wanting to play rock/punk/metal. If you're thinking of buying a Schecter C1 or 006 buy this instead as the open coil pickups give a lot more clarity and punch compared to either of them.Jerry Horton of Papa Roach has been using this model recently so its credentials as a metal guitar are fairly well backed.
Action, Fit, & Finish

Action and intonation were great off the shelf, i know for a fact that the shop didn't set it up so this is down to good work on schecters part. There are no visible flaws in the gloss black finish but the gold hardware is begginig to get dull. I also had a problem with a very scratchy bridge volume pot but as the guitar was under warranty it got fixed for free, the tech told me schecter had been fitting sub standard tone pots to some guitars so make sure to check this if you plan to buy any schecter. Also The nut hasn't been cut very well on the G string so it goes out of tune after heavy playing or string bending.

I have not played this guitar live but expect no problems as it feels rock solid, the finish is thick and will last well, strap buttons are fairly solid and i would be very happy to gig it without a backup as long as i had a fairly fresh set of strings on it...

This is an excellent guitar that will not let you down, I always play guitars before buying as I like to know what i'm buying but i would be happy to tell anyone to buy this guitar on mail order as i am confident they would not be dissapointed.

I just recently recieved my 2004 Tempest Custom. 22 frets, 24 3/4 scale mahogany neck. The standard electronics are Duncan Desigened HB 103 pickups wired to 2 volume controls and 1 push/pull tone control. I swapped the pickups for an EMG Zakk Wylde set and will be reviewing the guitar with the upfated electronics. The body Les Paul type with a tonepros locking tune-o-matic bridge. Grover tuners are standard and I added a hipshot guitar extender. Overall the features that come standard on this guitar are pretty flexible and those who can only get one guitar but still want some decent tonal options, then this is a good chioce.

I play in an electronic rock/goth/industrial band and I needed a guitar with EMGs. For the past 2 months I've been using the bass players epiphone Les Paul and just needed to get my own instrument. The sound of my Tempest is similar to a les paul, but definitely has it's own character. With the EMGs, the sound is full with excellent definition. I'm running this trough an HD147 head direct to club PA's and the sound is not as muddy as with the epiphone. I use both pickups and leave my volume and tone controls at the max. There isn't too much variety with the sounds I can get, but I don't need very much variety. I depend on the amp to get the variety I need and tthe guitar is just the catalyst. Overall, I'm loving this more than the epiphone.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:9
I waited a month for this guitar on special order and couldn't be happier. The action was set up perfectly for the 10's that came with the guitar, so a fe minor tweaks were needed when I put on my preferred set of 9's. The pickups were set up well with a good balance in tone and there were no flaws in the electronics or wiring. The biniding goes all the way around the body, neck, and headstock and where the binding on the neck meets the headstock there is a tiny, tiny gap...about the size of a high E string. Not absoluteley perfect, but I wold only expect perfection on a cutom made guitar.

The epiphone I used before seemed pretty tough, but the finish is coming off where I rest my right arm while strumming. The finish on my Tempest is prety thick and I don't forsee any major problems. I did all the wiring myself and while I"m not the best electronics guy, the guitar did stand up to my manhandling. I splattered a bit of solder on the back of the guitar and sprayed contact cleaner all over it while i was putting on the finishing touches. After cleaning up my messes there was absolutely no damage to the finish of the guitar. I replaced the strap buttons withe straplocks, so there will never be a problem with it falling on a gig. After all of my mods, there really isn't any reason for me to have another guitar for live playing, so i would gig without a backup if I had to.

I've been playing seriously for about 3 years and have been gigging for about 8 months only. I have an epiphone LP Special that will be getting the duncans I took out of my Tempest, an old Fender-copy epiphone and a Schecter 006 elite. Live I use my HD147 and have a marshall 2x12 for when i'm jamming with other bands. I wish I had a chance to try this guitar beffore I ordered it because I like to know what I'm buying, but after playing every other schecter i could get my hands on I felt comfortable ordering this without any prior experience. If this was stolen I wouldn't hunt down the guy who stole it because my mom would beat me to it. I'm looking at the Tempest Blackjack right now because I absolutely love my tempest. The body style is unique, it had the most name-brand parts for a guitar in it's price range and is so relatively obscure that I most likely won't find another guitar player in miami who has one. The neck is a bit thick for my taste, but I think that just adds to its durability.

This is where Schecter lacks. I purchased my Tempest Custom new from American Musical Supply, after about 6 months my bridge volume pot started to go bad, the sound was cutting in and out and making a cracking noise. The guitar was still under warranty so I thought no problem. I took my Tempest over to the guy that does all my guitar work Doug (at the Guitar ER, if you are ever in Chicago and need guitar work done, look him up); Doug tried to contact Schecter to find out about doing warranty repair work. After about a week and a half of calling Schecter and leaving messages he finally gets to talk to some on the phone. Apparently the only way you to get warranty repair work done on you Schecter is to ship that guitar to Schecter in California with me paying all the shipping costs, and have them do it. I live in Chicago. So something that would cost me like $15 for my guy to do is now going to cost me like $50 for shipping, so buyer beware. The guitars are great, I also have a C1 E/A. But unless you live near Schecter you are going to have ship you guitar to them for any warranty repair work.

First thing I did was swap out the Semour Designed Pickups. There a joke. I put in the Semour Custom 5 (SH-14) and the Jazz in the neck. I'm using a Mesa dual rect. with the 4 x 12 cabinet. No effects processor just pedals.
First of all the guitar is very solid. Craftsmanship even though made in Japan is perfect. Sound quality through my amp is crushing. It's a very heavy guitar so it feels like a Les Paul. all the frets are accessible with ease. Volume and toggle switch never get in the way. When clean is very smooth. This guitar is overall nice for any kind of music in sound and style. I liked it because the shape is timeless like the Les Paul.

This is a 2002, built in Korea (like all diamond series) and was set up in the schecter USA shop. 22 "jumbo" frets, solid mahogany body w/maple arch top. Set mahogany neck w/rosewood fretboard. Has 2 duncan design humbuckers with two volume and one tone. The tone knob is a push/pull coil tap, so you can turn the humbuckers into single coils - this is really a great feature. Tune-o-matic bridge, grover tuners. Mine is gloss black finish, gold hardware, 5-ply creme/black binding on body/neck/headstock and split crown inlays. This guitar is absolutely beautiful! looks like nothing else.
Sound

The sound of this guitar has a huge range. Anything from massive beefy humbucker distortion to the twangiest single coil sound. Distortion with the bridge pickup is very smooth punchy. the neck pickup can get great rich jazzy tones. i play mostly rock/metal/emo but now and then get into a little jazz/blues and this guitar works greatly for all of them, especially because you can get twice the amount of different sounds than most guitars because of the coil tap.

All schecters are set up at their US factory. I have not adjusted anything since i've had it. the action is perfect, very even and low, no fret buzzing. The tuners work very well.. i don't remember the last time i tuned it and i play it everyday. Everything seems to fit perfectly. Wonderful finish, there are a few dents, mostly on the binding but i bought this "new" over ebay, and it was apparently the floor model so i don't think this was to blame on schecter. the only problem, is sometimes the top strap peg starts to come a bit loose.
Reliability/Durability

This guitar would definatly hold up live, i'm not much of a guitar abuser but when i do get jumping arround the guitar seems to enjoy the ride. The frets are starting to get marked up a bit, but doesn't seem to be anything to be concerned with. Finish is great, the gold hardware seems to be wearing a bit (i think this is common for the gold color). Very solid strap buttons, i've never had the strap come undone. As mentioned above, the one peg has come loose a few times but it's fine now after tightening it up. I have no fears of this breaking in anyway, and would definatly use it without a backup, although i have another schecter (mike tempesta model) because it's nice to have two set for different tunings.

i've been playing bass for about 5 years and guitar for 2-3. I've got an epiphone LP special and a fender acoustic, along with a schecter bass and now two of their guitars. I must say, these are by far my favorite guitars i've ever played on. they always sound great, and come at a fraction of the price that they could be selling them for. i love everything about this guitar and dislike nothing. Wonderful playability and tons of tone. If this guitar were stolen, i would be extremely upset because they are kind of hard to come by in this area (iowa) and i would definatly search to find another one, not even considering gettingsomething else.

2002 Korean-built; essentially this is Schecter's answer to a Les Paul Custom. Kind of a funny shape; looks like someone left a Les Paul custom out in the sun too long and it melted. Very attractive guitar, though. Mahogany body, carved maple top, maple 22-fret set neck with rosewood fretboard, 3+3 headstock, 2 volume, 1 tone control, H/H Duncan Designed black and cream pickups w/3-way switch. Black paint with 5-ply cream&black binding on the top, neck, and headstock. Gold hardware includes tune-o-matic, stoptail, and Grover tuners. Graphite nut. "Split" crown mother-of-pearlish inlays. The only functional difference between this and a LP Custom is that it has one less tone control.
Sound
:8
Big surprise here, it sounds like a Les Paul. The Duncan-Designed pickups aren't bad; they actually seem punchier and more articulate than other D-D pickups I've had in other guitars. In my experience, these pickups tend to sound best in mahogany guitars anyway, and the fact that these aren't covered may help them somewhat. In any case, it sounds better than I'd expected, and I may keep these pickups for a while. Most of my other guitars have real Duncans or Gibson pickups, but this one seems to hold its own fairly well. I'd purchased this guitar primarily for mildly distorted blues and blues rock music, played through a Yamaha DG-Stomp into the power amp of a Peavey Transtube 3/4 stack (open back 2x12 coupled with a closed back 4x12). It sounds very good for this application, but I was also pleasantly surprised at how full and "open" it sounds under heavier, mid-driven hard rock settings as well (think "brown sound"). I typically prefer bolt-neck basswood guitars for hard rock, but this does quite well. As I mentioned before, the pickups are pretty good, but still not quite at the level as a good set of Duncans or Gibsons.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:10
Mine is a fairly early production model; I bought it before they were widely available over the internet. Build quality on this guitar is excellent. The paint, hardware, binding, etc is outstanding. The fretwork is better than I've seen on most production Schecters (most of them seem to have generally good fretwork but poorly "crowned" frets). Factory setup was OK, but I'm pretty picky and set up my own guitars anyway. This one didn't require much tweaking to bring it in.
My rating is for the actual construction, fit, & finish quality.
Reliability/Durability
:9
Great, solid guitar. Like any decent LP derivative, it's pretty much a tank. I don't beat my guitars up, so I don't anticipate any problems whatsoever. Typical to most imported (and many domestic) guitars, the gold plating on the hardware is pretty thin and is beginning to wear off (particularly on the tuners). This doesn't really bother me, but I would've been just as happy with chrome hardware. Strap buttons are pretty big, and look like they should hold up. Early Korean Schecters were noted for having some flaky pickup selector switches, but this one's been trouble-free so far.
Customer Support
:7
This is a crap shoot. I've had great luck in the past with Schecter, and have also had periods where they've been somewhat unresponsive. Your best bet is to try phone contact; the people I've spoken to there have told me that they receive so much email correspondence that it's pretty much impossible to keep up with it.
Overall Rating

I've been playing for about 18 years now, and have owned dozens of guitars. Right now, I have about 11 guitars, including 4 Korean Schecters. I was looking for a Les Paul-ish guitar, but didn't really want to buy a typical clone. I was really intrigued by the unique shape of the Tempest Custom, and based on my experience with my other Schecters this seemed to be a real bargain. I haven't been disappointed yet; this guitar is far beyond most Epiphone-level guitars with respect to quality, at about the same price. If you're a real tone-freak (as I am), invest in some aftermarket pickups and you'll have yourself a world-class guitar at 1/4 the price of the U.S. made stuff.
