I bought this guitar in 1977. It's a basic acoustic with a solid spruce top and rosewood back and sides. The neck looks like it's mahogany with a rosewood fretboard. It has basic white binding on the body and headstock. Very basic stripe inlay around soundhole. Inside is a stamp saying that it is made for CF Martin Company. It was built in Japan. The internal bracing looks well-constructed. I have a Fishman Rare Earth humbucking installed, so I can't see the serial number.

This guitar has sounded good for me for 28 years now. In the meantime I've gone through a variety of other guitars. I had a Breedlove that I liked, but it was too bright. The Sigma has a nice warm balanced tone. I recently purchased a Larivee OM-9 that, IMO, has a better sound. I bought the Larivee because the nut is slightly wider and I've been wanting to learn some fingerstyle. The Larivee has helped a lot, and I have been able to then go back to the Sigma and play fingerstyle. The Sigma still has a nice sweet sound.

The guitar used to have a nice finish but it's pretty well scratched up now. I have always liked the action, which has been very stable. It needed an adjustment when I moved to Denver, and then again when I moved back to California. I couldn't find any flaws in the guitar at all.

Over the years I've had the guitar refretted. A few years ago the headstock split across the neck behind the nut and I had a luthier repair it; I told him to not worry about cosmetics, and he didn't. There are now two very visible splices in the back of the headstock (invisible from the front). Also the back of the guitar came unglued for a section several inches in length near the neck. I had this professional repaired also. Overall I think this guitar has been reasonably reliable, especially considered the amount of play, travel, and abuse it's had in 28 years.

I own a bunch of gear, lots of electric guitars, amps, effects, etc. I've bought and sold at least 50 guitars over the years. This is the only one that has stayed with me in all that time. That says a lot for it. It's an old friend now... I keep it in DADGAD tuning most of the time and if I'm camping or playing outside somewhere this is the one that goes with me.
