This is a first serie guitar , hardtail, no tremolo, 2 emg humbuckers. I e-mailed Ned Steinberger and he told me it was made in the 1983 period. It has a snap-on leg rest , not the foldable one. Bought it used in Toronto. I needed a small guitar to travel in airplanes. This fits in the overhead compartment. After Sept 11, I am no sure they would let me carry it aboard since it looks like a rifle in the gig bag! All graphite square paddle model. Very neat looking

Sound : 10
The sound is linear and of course not the same as a wood guitar. Very good for Gibson type songs. I play through a Fender Deluxe hot-rod and it souds full, not harsh. Very good results with effects (GFX4 zoom). Pickups are powerfull and not shrill as somme people said. You have to use a tube amp with it .

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
One word; perfect. Beatiful piece of engeeniring. Intonation is as close to perfection ad a guitar can be. No buzzes and changing strings is a breeze (double-balls).

Reliability/Durability : 9
Very reliable. The toggel switch for switching pickups is a little fragile though.

Customer Support : 10
I could still communicate with Ned Steinberger and he answered me personaly. Great person and a beautiful mind.

Overall Rating : 10
I started at 12 (now 49) and I am a schooled musician with diplomas and so on. I do not rely on music for a living and own a Strat Gr ready, Jazz Rainsong, Gibson J-45. The Steinberger is a good all around instrument with a great advantage; graphite is not affected by dryness or cold and swing in weather. You can leave it in the trunk and it will reamin in tune forever. Try this with a 335. Of course , it has a sound of its own that is more on the Gibson side. Very fast neck . All in all, an excellent instrument, with limitations and advantages of composite material. Hey (as we say in Canada), this is the 21st century

Graphite body and neck....... what do u want???? 24 fert.... expend your guiter range..... small body... good for travell..... my model is strandard trem.... not a transtrem..... but no big deal..... bridge always in tune......and becareful with the zero fert... it worn out fast..... i strongly recommend to use the strings adaptors.. (i buy it in japan)..... so u dun have to buy the expensive double ball ends...sure as hell ned steinberger had a lot of research on the bridge.... i am totally in love with that... roller daddle won't rattle.... bridge lock is a 100 point invention..... forget about the flloyd rose and strat trems..... once u have steinberger.... those were nightmares....

Sound : 4
i heard a lot about pp saying the sound driven by that axe..... most of the pp i met would say it is "Plastic"... yes Plastic.... if u want a wood sound... sure this baby is not u want...... but if u want a unique sound from guiter... yes... try out steinberger...... u will found it is 1 of a kind..... basically.... i dun like the sound come out from emg 85/85.... i have a pickup collection of 81 and 89 too!!!!.. but.... i will try to change into other brands..... wait for me.... hehehehe.... and ture enough.... i add another roland syn pickup in the bridge section.... most of the time i use it as a guiter syn only.....

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
without truss rod..... means that u cannot fine tune this guiter.... the factory is a little too high... i use D'Addario 009 set strings..... simply feel nothing uder my fingers.... (i am a jazz guiter player).... i am looking forward to see if steinberger can intall a truss rod in the neck..... fert work is ok.... a little too easy to wron out..... becareful..... saddle work good to me.... still u must spent some time to mantain that..... and i have try to break every component of this guiter apart to clean it out.... (yes every part).... make a reading of the measurment of the saddle setting will be a good way to mantain its status..... compare with strat..... neck width is a little thin..... good for small hand players too.... ture enough.... not a good guiter to fit with a syn pickup simply because of the narrow neck and strings spacing..... once i have broke my trem stopper embedded under the bridge the trem pop all the way up..... as i want to change to heavy strings for experiment.... then.... no parts from steinbeger... i have to custom made a stopper on hard metal like steel from my dad's workshop...... hope the R&D guys in steinberger can upgeade that......

Reliability/Durability : 8
more to the breaking of the stropper.... the body cover with 1 of the mounting bracket cracked because guitar dropped on the floor.....i fix it myself with super glue and epoxy.... it works fine..... switch the situation to other guitars..... a total lost happened.....the finsh i think is a kind of gel coat same to the marine use...... v hard and resistant to horrible envorinment.....

Customer Support : No Opinion
close down..... i heard news that they will reopen in 2001.... hope so....

Overall Rating : 7
i have thsi guiter for more than 9 yrs.... yes it has scratchings and crackings..... but still stay in tune..... i am looking forward to sent it back for a fingerbaord replacement..... above to that..... this guiter is a v reliable one....
