Mine is a GR model and I use the Roland GR-300 synth with the guitar. Serial number 6034 which is pre Gibson I think. Don't know production year. All graphite composite construction, SA/SA/85 three pickup EMG configuration. Each pickup individually selectable. Trans Trem system. Active pickups, passive EQ. Indestructable finish. Really small boat oar body. Soft Steinberger gig bag.

Sound : 5
I have a love/hate relationship with the Steinberger sound. If I compare it to traditional Les Paul/Strat tone or any other premium wooden electric guitar, the tone is absolutely horrible. It's in no way "woody and warm". However if I compare it to all other ultra modern designs, the sound is outstanding. Extreme presence and very Hi-Fi in-your-face attitude. The attack is immediate and hard-as-glass. Will drive the front end of any amp like no tommorrow. Makes my 1962 JMI Vox AC30TB scream. Totally unusable through my old Marshalls cause it makes them squeal. This instrument loves effects, especially modulated stuff like chorus/flange/phase. Works well through a big stereo rack system with lots of stuff going on. The flexibility of the pickup switching is great but there are basically only two sounds: Driving bridge humbucker and out of phase Strat sound. I am researching the possibility of putting an EMG 85 in the neck position to change the overall configuration to 85/SA/85 and get one or two more useful tones in addition to getting more low mids out of the instrument. The big problem here is getting the appropriate face plate to fit. If your looking for vintage tones & vibe, run away from this guitar! On the other hand, if you love experimentation and really modern sound, this piece is worth a look. Makes effects really shine as well. I would love to give this guitar a great score on tone but it just doesn't cut the mustard in the vintage department.

Bought this used so had a set up performed. No buzzes or any funny stuff. Have trouble with the Roland pickup on an open "D" as it won't accurately track the fundamental. Still getting used to the Trans Trem. With hard dive bombs I can get it out of tune, but not a big deal cause those don't fit my musical style. Overall really decent action. Radius is a bit flatter than my taste but I'm adapting.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Indestructable unless run over by an Abrams M-1A tank. This guitar will still be played by someone 3000 years from now! Probably would work underwater as well.

Steinberger is gone (to the best of my knowledge).

Playing 30 years. Have a bunch of other stuff cause I'm a multi-instrumentalist. Guitar amplification is anchored by a couple of old Rivera high powered TBR rack amps which are incredible and a perfect Steinberger complement. Use vintage Marshalls & Voxes into Juice Extractors. Lots of pedals mounted in rack drawers. Everything controlled by sophisticated switching system and run stereo. The GR4-GT was pretty much everything I expected. If it were stolen I would hunt for another but they are pretty tough to find, especially in mint condition like mine. It's way different than my other guitars which are high end Gibsons. My favorite thing about it is the fact that it's an original Steinberger with all it's character, and the synth features. Great for experimental music, King Crimson / Adrian Belew, new age, metal. Awful for roots rock, blues.

Made about 1990 Newburgh NY, 24 frets, one-piece solid no wood in it at all, white color, transtrem bridge. One volume, one tone, 3 buttons for pickup selector. S/S/H pickups EMG SA/SA/85. The pickups are active but the tone control is passive. Neck rounded like a Gibson but the overall circumference is fairly low. 25.5" scale like a Fender. I wish the humbucker had a splitter. I wish the controls were a little more towards the tail because my playing moves them.

Sound : 10
Wonderful clarity and complexity at the same time. Suits all standards of playing. I have used it with many amps and it sounds great with everything. I have lots of other guitars, Carvin, Washburn Idol, Brian Moore, Goya electric, nothing matches this guitar for overall beauty of sound. Excellent sustain.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This guitar is the ultimate. The neck was set up perfectly and it's never needed adjustment in the 11 years I've had it. There's no way to adjust it, but so what. There's no wood to destroy the finish on. In terms of playability, all I have to do is think it and I can play it. I can easily bend entire barre chords with my left hand. The tiny body takes a lot of getting-used-to, and I wish it were a bit larger. I like the size of the STeinberger GR-4 but it is too heavy, and the weight of this L-series steinberger is superb.

The wonderful vibrato mechanism stays in tune, is very easy to use, and does not get in the way of my picking hand as those Floyd Rose units do. The rapid string change with the double-ball strings is wonderful. It is easy to tune.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This is the indestructo iron man of the guitar world. It always feels and looks new. You can't ding it--there's no wood. The frets seem highly resistant to wear.

When I first got the guitar there was a small problem. Steinberger and company treated me like a king, and improved the guitar in several ways I didn't expect or ask for. Since then they were bought by Gibson. I haven't need them to do anything.

Overall Rating : 10
I own lots of other guitars. This one is the King. I have another Steinberger, a GR4, and it is 95% as good. My top-of-the-line Carvin DC 200 doesn't sound nearly as good, and its Floyd Rose is a nightmare. If it were stolen I would have to replace it.
