standard features . 2 humbuckers with a 5 way toggle . the 5 way taps the coils so I can get the full humbucker sound or the single coil strat sound . The pickups are aldrich and they are the most articulate pickups I've ever owned . I can hear every note when I strum even when playing with a dirty sound .
floyd rose , sperzal locking tuners . alder body ,indian rosewood fingerboard . 1/4 sawn maple neck ,clear red finish.

Sound : 10
as I said above the aldrich pickups are very articulate and versital as well . I play hard rock as well as contempory christian and this guitar does both really well . I play thru a splawn quickrod and a fender hot rod deville . the fender is for playing at church .This guitar goes from one end of the spectrum to the other .

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I had to raise the floyd just a hair to stop the string buz on the high e but other than that it was good to go right out of the case . action is low and fast . the finish is beautiful .

Reliability/Durability : 9
don't for see any problems

Customer Support : 10
best ever . this guitar is a replacement for a pro series suhr that I had some trouble with . John upgraded me to a standard buuilt to my specs at no extra charge . It doesn't get any better than that

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I'v been playing for 34 years . I've owned aprox 30 guitars all of which were high end . Suhr is among the best . I rate it equal to or better than my custom shop les pauls and my wayne rock legend as well .If It were stolen I would definately replace it.

This is a New Suhr Standard, Bangle quilt maple finish top, maple neck with African rosewood 22 frets, Black face with Abalone logo. Alder back, contoured neck block. Sperzel tuners, Suhr DSV & DSV+ humbuckers, Vintage single coil in the middle. Modern-vintage bridge.
G&G form fitting case, "One beautiful guitar".

Sound : 10
My style covers Classical Jazz Rock, Progressive Fusion Pop. I needed a guitar that would cover diverse styles with conviction.
The tone is just beautiful! along with the looks. My Main amp that I play through is a Bogner Shiva with the Bogner 2x12(OS) Cabinet, Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. I run the head through a T.C. Electronics processor for reverb, I have a pedal board for additional effects, Fulltone FDII (Mosfet), Analogman chorus, Teese RMC3 wha, and a couple of MXR's & Boss pedals. I can go from a medium rock to full out shred with some of the best string articulation of any guitar that I have played and I have had many!
The guitar has a slight thinner finish than most guitars so that the wood tone can come through more, which does give a "Organic" feel.
It has a killer bridge tone along with a wonderful neck humbucking, great for jazz and rock arpeggios. With a change of pickup locations you can get a very convincing "Vintage Fender" tone for the blues, to R&B, country and funk. The guitar covers many styles if your capable. One of the best all around guitars that I've ever own.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The action is low but not to the point where the frets are rattling against the fretboard! I like it most where there's just enough resistance so if I play aggressive, the guitar sounds "Clean".
The top is just "Stunning!" the quilt is very 3-D like, perfectly matched, there is not one thing that was out of place. The only thing that I did was to change the strap locks to Schallers, I've been using them for so long that there the best in my opinion. The guitar is perfect (I know nothing is perfect), again an awesome instrument.

Reliability/Durability : 10
A guitar is a guitar! how you treat it will be the outcome! Many pro's have use them for touring, there expensive but it's reasonable for what they do! I can say enough about them.

Customer Support : 10
I have spoken to Ed, and he is a great person to talk to! They have worked with me on my customizing, and have never let me down! A truly great company.

Overall Rating : 10
John Suhr was a Master builder for Fender for many years. He worked in New York as a builder (Pensa-Suhr) and built guitars for professional musicians. They are without a doubt one of the best guitars out there. They listen to the customer, and work with you!

I have 2 Suhrs -

No 1 - Chambered Standard - Mahogany body, Koa cap, mahogany neck with Pau ferro board, 1055 trem, 2 x JST Noiseless, 1 X DSH

No 2 - Standard - Basswood body, quilt cap, single piece maple neck, 1055 trem, 1 x DSV+ (neck), 1 x DSH+

Both have the locking Sperzels with the Buzz Feiten system.

It would have been nice to get some case candy hence the 9 rating.. you pretty much only get the spec sheet and a couple of allen wrenches, this is a minor niggle though..

Sound : 9
Mahogany/Koa Suhr
This makes a great rhythm guitar with strong, defined mid tones - think classic rock/metal. It actually reminds me of a lighter/brighter Les Paul type tone. The pickups sound great clean and under high gain also although the split tones could be better as they do tend to loose some definition under distortion. The Suhr V60LPs may be a better option if you're looking for mid-gain tones. I love using this guitar for blues (ie SRV / Gary Moore) and for jamming along to old Megadeth.. yes it really is that versatile.

Basswood/Maple Suhr
This to me has one of the best lead tones I've heard. Really consistent across all frequencies with strong, defined bass notes and crisp highs - it sounds so different to my other basswood guitars (Ibanez/Musicman) - the tone highlights the quality of wood selection at the Suhr factory. My only critism is that the DSV+ in the neck is too high powered but then I only have myself to blame as I ordered it to be that way! I use this guitar for all of my high gain stuff - like Dream Theater/Satch/Vai/Shadow Gallery etc..

The sounds are so good I can assure you that even your non-playing partners/wives/mates will appreciate the Suhr tones over your other guitars!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I rarely give a ten but for Suhr there really is no other option. Everything is flawless - and I mean flawless -

A non-locking trem that stays perfectly in tune
Truss rod and action set to perfection - maybe too much so, I actually raised the action a little
Fantastic looking tops
Perfect tension on the volume/tone controls etc.

You can't ask for more - certainly as good as Anderson in terms of build with better quality tops at the moment plus the Plek setups make a real difference to the action - you can get extremely low with minimal fret buzz, try it and you will want all you guitars 'Plekked'

Reliability/Durability : 10
Played both guitars extensively for over 6 months now - they are lasting well.

I ended up blocking the trems as I preferred the feel and extra tuning stability but other than this I've had to make no adjustments to the action or truss rod. Amazing - no other guitar I've had has held up as well through the seasons.

I could gig with either of my Suhrs without a backup.

Customer Support : 10
Suhr have a great forum where Suhr and his team post - any question you raise is answered fairly promtly.

When I ordered my second Suhr I was able to pick the type of quilt figuring in the top - how many other makers would let you do this ?(other than the custom, individual makers - for a much higher price I bet..)

Overall Rating : 10
I have gone through so many guitars over the past 15 yrs or so - guitars I've gone through -

PRS Custom 22 / 24 / Modern Eagle
Tom Anderson Cobra S
Gibson Les Paul Standard / Class 5 Custom Shop
Fender Lonestar Strat / Custom Classic
Ibanez S540 / JS90th / RGT3120 / RG1520GK / R540

The Suhrs really are exceptional - the combination of fantasic build, super playability, and great tones are not easily matched by other manufacturers. My Anderson was the only guitar that came close to the Suhr and I ended up selling it to get my second!

I really can't praise them enough but you need to go and try them yourself. As will all guitars you will find some your like, some you don't but try a selection and I'm sure you'll find at least one you will fall in love with.. and then spend the next week trying to figure out how to finance it.

Or like I do... try and figure out how I fund my next Suhr order!

Lots of nice features. Basswood body, quilted maple top, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Humbucker in the bridge, two single coils above. Beautiful instrument.

Sound : 5
This is what disappointed me. I bought an Anderson Drop Top and I love it. I saw these and bought one to compare. It just sounds unlively compared to my Anderson. It seems somewhat dull. The distorted sounds are ok, but the cleans are abysmal.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Very nice playing, but still, it doesn't compare to the Anderson.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This is a very sturdy instrument.

This is a nice guitar, but needs different pickups or something to help the sound.

Features : 10
My 1st Suhr's specs, 2006, are: chambered, standard mahogany body with quilted maple top, slim even c shaped, mahogany neck with pau ferro fretboard and satin finish; two S-90s (Suhr P-90s); gold hardware; sperzel locking tuners; 9"-12" compound radius; tobacco burst; 22 jumbo frets; non-locking, string through bridge. State of the art features as far as I'm concerned with the Plek job and sperzel locking tuners.

Sound : 10
I wanted a total tone, blues machine and got one! Best, smoothest neck I've ever played. Best, most resonant body I've ever heard. Notes snap with plenty of bite and natural sustain. Tonal range covers high-mids and mids very well. My Les Pauls are more lower-mids and mids based. I think the Pau Ferro board really help the notes pop and sing. I could have gone with the next bigger neck size. The Even C-Slim is very comfortable, but after playing my Les Pauls for so long I'm used to more meat on the neck to grab on to. I'm getting used to this slim figure though. Only took a couple days worth of playing transition. There is nothing about this guitar that I dislike.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Action, fit and finish from the factory were Excellent! Not one flaw was found. Nothing for me to simply look past or get over, like one has to do with main stream guitars. Intonation was spot on all over the neck. Best I've ever played. Workmanship: Outstanding throughout. I did however, lower the action a bit, and raised the pole pieces of the S-90s closer to the strings and to match the curve of the neck radius. No big deal. Its not like I was there to tell them to do these things for my preference.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar seems to be very solid and stable. No broken strings, yet with some hard playing. Hardware seems to be solid as well. Easy to clean light poly coat on the body. Much easier to clean and harder to scratch than my Nitro finished Gibbys.

Customer Support : 10
Ed Yoon was very easy to work with and very responsive to each phone call and email. I've got no problems here either.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing 21 years. I've developed personal expectations and preferences for all of my music equipment. A Suhr guitar is a truly professional quality instrument available to weekend warriors or reguarly gigging musicians. I really doubt there is any difference in quality or attention to detail in what Suhr's endorsers play and what you buy from Suhr.

2004 Standard in Chili Pepper Red. Basswood Body w/ Maple Top. HH, Floyd. C slim neck with maple fretboard and abalone inlays. Signed headstock with abalone.

Sound : 10
Very versatile guitar, especially once I change the strings from 9's to 10's. Using a Vetta II combo. This is the best sounding solidbody guitar I have played. Jazz to metal to country, it's all here.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Awesome feel, slightly broken in. No flaws at all. The C neck takes some getting used to though. Definitely fatter than my Petrucci MM. Frets are medium and I would have preferred heavy but I wasnt about to order one and wait 4 months. Tuning stability is awesome...has locking tuners and locking nut!! Crazy? Excessive? Not to me. I can Brad Gillis this damn thing and stay in tune.

Reliability/Durability : 10
No plans to use it live anytime soon but I would take a backup...I mean things happen, people. The strap button seems solid. I have never had a problem with that. I use the planet waves locking strap so I feel pretty secure. Hopefully the hardware will last. This is my first original Floyd and hoping for superior durability.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Havent contacted John yet. Robert at Synergy Guitars however was very patient and helpful on phone giving me all the features and sending me extra pics.

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing for 15 years and owned about 10 different guitars. This one is certainly the classiest and most versatile sounding. I need more experience with this thing to qualify just how good it is. It easily beats all the others in craftsmanship. The sound is awesome but it will take a while to see if it is for me. I briefly had an Anderson Hollow Drop Top and took it back because as creamy as the tone was, it didnt suit my playing style which can get pretty heavy. I would definitely buy another if it were stolen...this was the product of months of research and playing other guitars. The price is hefty though but if it can do all that I need, I really dont need a lot of guitars. Yes, some addicts on here buy five, but searching out that one is much more satisfying.

To make this easy to read I will do a list of high points on what I consider the finest production guitars available today. I will be reviewing the 3 that I have bought in the last 6 months.

1-#1502-Basswood, solidbody, quilt top, one piece birdseye maple neck, H-S-S, Standard Trem, Even C Slim, heavy frets, 2 Suhr Noiseless and a Rio BBQ Bucker. Color: Amber

2-#2004-Chambered Basswood, quilt top, maple neck w/pao ferro fingerboard, H-S-H, Standard Trem, Even C Slim, heavy frets, 2 JS humbuckers and a V60 single. Color: Cherry Burst

3-#3320-Chambered Alder, quilt top, maple neck w/Indian rosewood fingerbaord, H-S-S, Gotoh VG 300 Trem, Even C Slim, heavy frets, 2 Suhr Noisless and a Rio BBQ Bucker. Color: Trans Rootbeer

Sound : 10
I was mainly drawn to these guitars because I was dissatisfied with the other guitars I had over the years. I played Steinbergers for about 10 years, then Brian Moore MC1s for about 3, then Melancons for about 2, and I finally graduated to the Suhrs. Thats the history.

It is my opinion that these guitars are made from the finest woods available. Acousticly, that is not plugged into an amp, these guitars sound awesome. That is what sold me on John's guitars. They are seriously resonant and have a delightful ring to them. The acoustic tone is even and just bright enough. I tend to like a darker sound than most folks.

The 2 chambered guitars are even a little bit more resonant and the chordal clean tones are a bit deeper. All of the 3 guitars have their own twist on great sound and feel.

The solid basswood guitar, #1502, has an absolutly huge single note tone and has tons of sustain... just like Nigel's '59. Its a great rock guitar. The clean tones are equally nice. Its all in the wood. I am plugged into a Shiva amp too... that helps the overall equasion too.

Suhr guitars can be ordered with all kinds of options... so whatever you like is available.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
10, 10, 10.

Great fret work. The Buzz Feiten tuning for me is awesome. All my chordal work is in tune all over the neck. Closed and open voiced chords are just great to listen to with the Feiten nut. The Even C Slim neck profile is my favorite. The finsh is great too. Its consistent and hard as a rock. Sounds great, looks great. The body countours are awesome too. The tummy cut and the forearm bevel make playing even more enjoyable.

The guitars are beautiful... but they sound even better. The Brian Moore MC1s that I owned were equally beautiful but lacked the resonance and projection that wood has to offer. I sold the Moores because I was dissatisfied with the tone... ultimately I need a guitar to sound right... that is why I bought the Shurs. They look great too... best of both worlds.

The Suhr folks run a great shop. All the guitars I played at Boston Guitar Works had great action, fit and finish.

Reliability/Durability : 10
A small but significant note, the Suhr strap buttons rock. No need of those squeaky straploks or any of that stuff.

A note to anyone considering ordering a Suhr... check out which trem/bridge you like best before you order. Not all trems are interchangible and they all sound different.

Customer Support : 10
I have been in touch with the shop on occasion. I know these guys are busy building guitars so I email them instead of calling them. I get a response within a resonable amount of time. Customer support it great and I am happy to play guitars made by cool, friendly people.

These guys have a great thing going and I plan on getting a few more spectacular guitars in the next year or so. I have no idea why anyone would play a Fender when these guitars are available with tons of options for a reasonable price in a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks for making them!

Overall Rating : 10
I know in these HC reviews you are supposed to reveal some aspect of the guitar that you don't like... but, I have no complaints about my guitars. I will say this however, I personally do not like the stainless steel fretwire that is available as an option... I think its too bright sounding and a little bit chattery. That is a preference thing. You may love it. I was lucky enough to have Boston Guitar let me play all their Suhrs for an extended period of time so I could figure out which ones I liked best. They had about 10-12 Suhrs so I played them all over the course of a few visits. See, having all these options available is fantastic... you can order the guitar that is meant for YOU!
