Not horrible, but not good. Very flat, and lifeless clean tone. with distortion, it sounded 100% better. Better than some, not as good as others. Pots sucked. P/u switch was loose and scratchy.

High action out of the box. Cheap shit strings. Intonation was weak. Fretboard was soft, no sustain. Tuners were sticky. Nut worked loose after a few months.

Beat the hell out of it and it came back for more. I still have the neck.

This was the very first guitar I'd ever owned (back in 1998). My buddy had taught me power chords on his Gibson LP Studio, so I decided to get in on the action. Bought this beast with a non-padded gig bag, cable, picks, strap, etc for $100 smackers. I wound up using it for my band through a Crate G600 1/2-stack and DOD Grunge Pedal. I even used it to record a demo with a DOD distortion and Yamaha 50w 2x12 combo, and it sounded damn decent. It's a fair beginner guitar, but next time I'd save a few more bucks and buy something better. The market is flooded with awesome beginner deals and packages now, it's not like it was 6 years ago.

my excel was made in china, it said so on a little sticker. the guitar was very cheap, and i didn't expect much of it. the first thing i noticed, though, is that the instrument is VERY light. secondly i noticed the nice action. it has very low action, and is still able to play without fretbuzzez. also the center pickup-poles are raised on all 3 pickups. these singlecoils are not very agressive, but they're not dull either.
the downside to this cheap 'toy' is that it has no tone! i have owned fenders and even a gibson. the excel guitar plays just as well as guitars 15x its price, but the sound, the sound! it has poor sustain, and kind of a flat sound. i can't really get to twang well, but it works with distortion, as do all electric guitars (work well with distortion).
the instrument is cheap, light, works well, but sounds like something cheap.
my very first electric guitar was ugly cherry red, had a flat, narrow fretboard and sounded murky and dark. and it weighed a ton! the excel guitar sounds brighter, has a real fretboard, AND: the g-string doesn't ring. the g-string on my first guitar did, and it really pissed me off.
but the guitar was set up poorly when i took it out of the box. the saddles needed adjustment, and the instrument was totally out of tune. i instantly changed the strings, because the instrument sounded so cheap, but it only helped some...but overall i'm pretty happy...

I don't know what year this guitar was made but it seems to have been made in '99 or 2000. The guitar has a "MADE IN CHINA" sticker on it. This Strat style guitar has 21 frets. It has the standard Strat set up of two tone controls, one volume control, and a five way selector switch. The pickup configuration is composed of 3 single coil pickups. Excel makes the pickups. The guitar body and neck are made from maple(this thing is heavy!). The finish is a very high gloss solid black. The body is a nice copy of the Strat. It has a Tune-O-matic bridge. Non-locking tuners made by Synsonics (pretty nice). The neck is a bolt on with a rosewood fingerboard and a steel truss rod. The neck is very thin. I got this guitar off Ebay from panheadread@mindspring.com. It came with a non-padded gig bag, a cable, Ernie Ball strap, picks, guitar method book, and a Kustom 10 watt practice amp (sounds nice for how small it is) all for $200. For the price this is an awesome package. Finish had some dents on it when I recieved it, but overall this was one great deal.

I'm a beginning guitarist and I'm trying to learn every style of playing. This guitar is very versatile. I can get some fat tones and some high stuff that'll heart your teeth out of this one. This guitar sounds great when it's being played, but it buzzes like a mother at the lowest pickup (my favorite). I use it clean and with overdrive going through my amp into my computer back through my speakers(they're incredibly loud). It rattles quite a bit when you first get it but this can be corrected by raising the action a little bit. Sounds great when playing power chords, yet plays solos very nicely. When playing this guitar clean it sounds awesome (for the price). It is definitely a happy guitar, puting out sound that is bright. Also you can get heavy with this thing. I can get the fattest tones and some raunchy stuff to pour out of it. The only thing I dislike about the sound is that it is quite noisy at certain pickups. For the money it's good and awesome to learn on.

The guitar was pretty much in tune when I recieved it. I didn't know anything about guitars then so I put up with the crazy fret rattle. I since then learned about how to adjust the action. I had to higher the action a little bit to get rid of the fret rattle since I like to play chords. It's just high enough to avoid the rattle yet it's still easy to play solos. Pickups were fine as far I could tell. Set up on the bridge was nice. There were some small finish flaws that didn't bug me and I'm a perfectionist so nothing too bad. This guitar seems to be built with percission.

This thing is built like a space shuttle (not Challenger). I've dropped it and it came out solid. The hardware is nicely finished with chrome and seems like it will last a lifetime. The finish is excellent not considering the small flaws. It has a really thick and very high gloss finish that's definetly going to last. The strap buttons are there to stay because they are rock solid. I can definetly depend on this guitar and have jammed on it pretty hard with no damage to it. I don't gig but if I did I don't think I would need a backup for this guitar. I've had it since Christmas and have not had any problems with it (knock on wood).

The company I dealt with was fast to ship and nice to deal with. No warranty on this guitar, but I don't think I'll be needing it. The only thing that bugged me is the crappy pictures they supplied. I was kinda taking a risk when I bid on it.

I've been playing since Christmas (roughly three months), but I'm flying along according to people who have been playing over five years. If this guitar was stolen or lost I would definetly get another one just because of the neck. The neck is as slippery as ice, smooth as butter, like greased lightning, and so on. I love the neck on this guitar. I've played on a PRS-1 standard (very expensive) and my cheap guitar blew it out of the water for speed. I've yet to see a neck that's as fast as my guitar. I think the neck alone is worth more than the guitar body and electronics! My Cousin who is brutaly honest and a great guitarist, said it's fast and it sounds good. On my next guitar up, I'm going to try and swap necks. Overall for the price this is an awesome guitar. Reminder: I got mine with the package deal, a brend new one on ebay starts at $116 with no reserve. Brand new from www.guitarsgalore.com it's $149.99. If you're a begginner this is the guitar for you. Easy push down on the strings and smooth. Pssshh, for $116 buy it for the neck. I've played on the real deal Fender Stratocaster and this is better.
