I wanted a competent smaller, less expensive guitar for traveling and other circumstances where a full-size guitar and hardshell case are just too bulky and heavy to cart around, not to mention the risks of theft or accidental damage. It has served that role very well. What I didn't expect was the typically Taylor playability and quality/value level. I like the plain look, and I agree with other reviewers that a flashy looking guitar for less than $500 has to have seriously compromised something else. I installed an active LR Baggs I-Beam pickup and play it through a Baggs ParaDI on stage. I put it on stage every week at our local open mic for others to borrow as the "house guitar". People pick it up and think it must be a toy, so light and plain. Then they play it and smile; big smiles.

I've been playing guitar and writing songs (acoustic-electric country folk-rock is as close as I get to a style label) for 40 years. I have had a 1970s Gurian Jumbo Rosewood since 1975, and the Big Baby can't match its resonance, but the sound is far beyond what you get in most budget guitars. I perceive it as especially punchy, a strong midrange projection that suits my somewhat percussive flatpicking style well. I agree with the others that it won't ring out a resonant bass like a full-size solid-wood instrument, but it's far from inadequate across the range from high to low. With the Baggs ParaDI, it's easy to fatten up the bottom end a bit. I also have a Taylor 355 12-string, a jumbo that will blow the Big Baby out of the room, but they both have that legendary and consistent Taylor feel. You won't find better sound at the price, period. A traveling singer-songwriter came into Open Mic a few weeks ago with a borrowed Martin dreadnaught. She was so small that it looked like she had a cello under her arm. When we invited her up to play again at the end of the evening, I offered her the "house guitar". She looked much more comfortable with the smaller box, and she raved about its playability and sound. She liked it better than the old Martin, which says a ton about tone.
Action, Fit, & Finish

I haven't fooled with the action yet because it plays just fine. The action varies pretty dramatically with string gauge. A friend gave me a couple of sets of extra-light Washburn bronze strings; waaaay too light for my imperfect fingering style. The first and sixth strings would sometimes roll right off the edge of the fingerboard, something that never happens with my Gurian. Back to light D'Addario Phosphor Bronze (my standard for more than 30 years), and it plays real nice; the Elixirs work as advertised also. I mainly play broken chords with a lot of hammering and dropoffs, a rhythmic strum with a lot of picking of individual strings. This thing works for me, but I'm off to buy some Grover 18:1 tuners. The G string tuner seems to have a dead spot in its linearity, and the cheap tuners don't hold very well for me. I do like the plain, unadorned look; it's real easy to overdo fancy purfling and binding. This thing has an almost homemade, organic look of admirable simplicity.
Reliability/Durability
:

It's been on the stage at Open Mic for several months now without visible damage, even in the hands of some pretty crappy guitarists. Just because it's light doesn't mean it's flimsy. The tuners are inexpensive, rudimentary, and inconsistent; a no-brainer upgrade to Grovers. I have nearly worn a Willie Nelson hole into the top of my Gurian from aggressive pick contact for more than 30 years, but the Big Baby hasn't shown more than very faint superficial scratches. It still looks virtually brand-new. I have played it live many times and would certainly rely on it without a backup if I didn't feel a need to play my very best instruments in a given situation. For a featherweight, this thing plays straight, sounds better than you would guess to look at it, and holds its playability and (albeit plain) appearance over time. I can and do depend on it.

Forty years as a solo singer-songwriter. I've had Fender and Martin 12-strings, and an early Takamine "Martin" after starting with some forgettable and forgotten beginner's boxes. I play a 1974 Gurian Jumbo Rosewood and a Taylor 355 12-string, and now the Big Baby. All three have Baggs active I-Beam pickups. I play through a Baggs ParaDI and a Korg acoustic effects processor. The possibility of theft or loss is a big reason why I wanted a replaceable, inexpensive guitar; the Gurian is virtually irreplaceable and worth five or six times the price of a Big Baby. It is an awesome second/third/etc. guitar and an adequate only guitar. Its size and weight make it a superb travel guitar. It is markedly superior to shinier instruments in its price range and easily the equal of low-end Martins. I have no complaints at all about the Taylor Big Baby, and I've been around the block a time or two with good and bad guitars. The best value in the guitar universe!

The features are great sound and good high fret access because of the flat heel. Really skinny neck like an electric. Other than that it is just a neatly finished acoustic guitar. What else does it need?

I played this up against a whole bunch of acoustic guitars in the shop and I just fell in love with the tone and playability. I played it head to head with a very expensive jazz archtop and was amazed how it had a similar clarity of tone, with great separation of tone between the strings. Yes it does have a lower bass response than bigger bodied guitars, but I like that, perhaps that's what adds to the clarity.

The action was excellent - electric guitar low. The nut is still sticky on the G string. (...missus) but it keeps in tune really well - I don't think the tuners are bad. On mine, the scratchplate is lifting.

All those who think this guitar is a delicate flower think again! I have RUN OVER this baby, and thrown it across a room. It has picked up a few scars, but still plays beautifully.
I was storing the guitar, in it's gig bag, under my car in hot weather, to 'protect it. Not thinking, I jumped in the car and drove across the field, stopping when the guitar had become firmly stuck between the bottom of the car and the grass. Several friends held up one side of the car and I pulled the guitar out, a sick feeling in my stomach. But when I unzipped the gig bag the big baby was totally unharmed. Rock on!
On the other hand, I have a habit of banging my plectrum on the wood, to mark time, but this also marks the soft top.

I've been playing for 10 years. My budget for this purchase was #600-1000 UK, but when I found this guitar I kept the rest of the cash in my pocket. The top fret access is really good, the neck it a dream to play. Whenever I give it to another player they remark how easily it plays. It has improved my playing no end!

This is a very basic instrument, but what is there is very nicely done...It came with a gig bag, so that's something...It's pretty in a plain way...The nut and bridge are Tusque...a synthetic material like bone, which is a very nice feature on such a basic guitar...A very basic matte finish which enhances the overall economy of means aesthetic...The sides and back are laminate (very nice laminate), but the top is solid sitka with a nice tight grain...Unbelievable quality...Nice mahogany neck with an ebony fingerboard...Very nice fretwork....

I got this guitar because I needed something to play fingerstyle country and blues on...Most of my other guitars are electric solidbodies...This thing sounds great for country stuff...Rich, very full, with a kind of bright twang with a pronounced upper mid emphasis...In a way, the sound belies it's 15/16th size and sounds fuller than many of its full size bretheren...I love the way this guitar sounds!

I've been playing 40 years or so...I've got like 15 guitars or so...Mostly electric...A bunch of G&Ls...A Heritage les paul...The odd Gibson and Gretsch...One thing I have a definite affinity for is the basic guitar which is what this is...
When I decided to get an accoustic, I went to the local mega emporium and played alot of them...The rock bottom Martins were nice, but they don't play as well as this one does...And did I mention the price? A STEAL!
It's heartening to me that you can buy one of these things for this price...American made...Good quality...No disappointments...
The real beauty of it is that if it was stolen, I could just pony up another 3 or 4 hundred and get another one (I understand that the consistancy level of these things is really high)...My big dog jumped up on the bed this morning right on top of me while I was playing...Right on the guitar...Yeah, I was a bit pissed, but as soon as I realised he didn't put his paw through the top, all was forgiven...Try that with a D 28....

The features are very good for a $425 (with gig bag) guitar - note that I paid $290 used. Solid top, ebony fret board, ebony bridge, Tusq nut and saddle (very close to bone in tone and a simple factory manufacturing decision that makes a huge differance in tone), quality laminated back and sides.
All in all, the guitar has a great top, fret board, nut, saddle and bridge. The gig bag is of very high quality for a freebe.
Sound
:

The Tusq nut and saddle really help the chiming tone. I have had bone work done (nut and saddle) on a Martin D-15 and a Martin OM 16 GT (my main guitars). The chiming tone from the Tusq is very nice. The 15/16 scale leaves the bass a bit quiter than a full dread or even an OM (000) but the tone is very full and pleasant. I have a Larrivee parlor as well and this guitar has far more bottom than my parlor. Considering the smaller scale and portability, the tone is very pleasing.

The action is slightly high but I had it set up that way. I can play fingerstyle very cleanly at higher speeds. I'm very happy with the playability. The neck fit is very good. The frets are well dressed. You really have to club it to get the low E and a strings to rattle. Nice comfy guitar.

The laminated back and sides are bulletproof, I would let my son the 7 year old practice on this guitar without worry. I would take this guitar into the cold on a trip without fear. Sturdy little guitar.

I have played for 31 years, own Martin OM 16 GT, Martin D-15, Martin DX-1, Larrivee Parlor, Epi PR 350 12 string. Big Baby Taylor, Gibson Les Paul, Fender Strat, 2 Fender Tele's, Epi Les Paul Jr. Fender P-Bass and Sigma Mandolin.
This is a great travel guitar for an experianced guitar player, the 15/16 scale and the quality fitted bag are very easy to fit in a packed car or airplane, the guitar is very sturdy. This guitar would be great for a teenage student, college dorm guitar, or a guitar for a petite woman like my wife - my wife loves the scale of this guitar.
I was going to buy a Martin LXM for travel, I couldn't do it. They are too small. The Baby Taylor and the LXM just seem like gimmicks to me. I was shopping Art & Lutherie Ami's (a laminated Parlor) and then I found the used Big Baby Taylor. The Big Baby Taylor is a great value and solid players guitar at $400.

Other reviewers have listed the features... It is a very simple guitar. Not much to it. No electronics, just straight acoustic. Taylor lists it as a 15/16 size guitar, so just shy of being a full size dreadnought.
Sound
:

I really like the sound of this guitar. It doesn't have quite the bass response that you can find in full-body dreadnoughts, but it does admirably well for its size - thanks to its satin finish and lack of back bracing. It actually produces better bass than another full-body acoustic I own that has a high gloss finish. I have used it for some recordings (definitely not professional), and it sounds good. I personally think it sounds best with Elixir strings, and it's my only guitar that I have consistently bought Elixirs for (seeing how I can buy other strings for $3/pack instead of $13).
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
I purchased the guitar used off of Ebay, and it was in good shape. I've found nothing wrong with the craftsmanship of the guitar. The action was awesome. It has the lowest action of any acoustic I have ever played, and it makes it so easy to get my fingers moving. I suppose the previous owner could have lowered the action, but I don't know. The B string does buzz on occasion though, and I'm considering moving the action up a bit to remedy that. But it's hardly noticeable, and my fingers really do love that low action.
Reliability/Durability
:

It seems fairly durable. It is a very, very lightweight guitar though, and that always seems to give me the impression of fragility. I haven't had the guitar fall apart in my hands yet though.
When I bought my big baby, it had some wear below the sound hole from being rubbed on by a hand or pick, and the worn spot keeps getting bigger the more I use it. The satin finish, whereas it helps out the sound of the guitar, doesn't make for an extremely durable finish.

I've been playing guitar for I guess 6 years now. I don't own any particularly impressive guitars, but I have had my hands on quite a few. I would rate this guitar below other Taylors I have played, but not far below - and for the price, this is a great guitar. It's a perfect guitar to keep in your bedroom so you can just pick it up anytime and jam. It's also a great travel guitar. Just sling it over your shoulder, and you could carry it for miles it's so light. And it fits into the overhead compartment of every plane I have flown with it in.
I personally like the ability to plug in, so I plan to install an under-the-bridge pickup very soon. That will be fun.
If this guitar were stolen, I would definitely get another one just like it. It's so much fun to play, and it fits my mobile lifestyle well.

This is a minimalist guitar. Solid top which has the usual bracing, but the laminated saple sides and curved back have none. It has the general shape of a dreadnought but almost the same dimensions as the taylor grand concert 12 series. The ebony fret board is 1 11/16 at the nut rather than the 1 3/4 as in the standard taylor lineup.
Sound
:

I like elixer strings and the sound is very balanced and amazingly full for such a small guitar. This must be due to the bowl shaped back and the lack of bracing. I play solely for my own pleasure, mostly fingerstyle country blues, some pop, and even a little classical. It is perfect for what I do.

I had to tweak the action some to get it right but it was easy to do. A lot of people compare the action to an electric. All I can say is that I can do things on this guitar I could never do on any other acoustic I've played. It is the easiest guitar to play I have ever tried.

This is a lightweight but the saple laminate seems resiliant and with the curved back the combination seems very strong. The finish is matte, the hardware durable but inexpensive. I leave it out and my two boys and their friends play it all the time. They have torn every thing else up but not this guitar. It must be durable. I know I don't worry about it.

I've tried martins, taylors, tacomas, guilds and larrivees. I don't have to worry about it. I can leave it out and pick it up any time, for 10 minutes or 2 hours. It really is hard to put down.

I am sure you are aware of it's features by now... One thing I must say about it, though. this guitar is SPARTAN looking, very little ornamentation, NO gloss, NO frills, Nothing extra. But in my opinion that is the coolest thing about it! It looks so pure. No fluff, only what is nessecary to bring out the sweetest tone you will find for under $700.00.
While some may complain about the satin finish, exposed screws in the neck, and lack of rosette, I say this guitar is 100% HONEST. Doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't, and makes beautiful sound it's top priority. They don't sacrifice sound quality for looks, so it is the perfect guitar for your typical anti-establishment, Sell-out hating, Musician types.
On a technical note, I do appreciate the way Taylor redesigned the Heel of the neck so that you have plenty of room to get your fingers on the highest frets. Again, they saved money by not attempting the cutaway, but found a way to give you great access anyway. PURE GENIOUS. But as much as I get why certain features had to be sacrificed to give you this sound at this price, I honestly cant give it a high rating for "features"... Because there just arent many features! I think I will replace the rather generic, (allthough so far trouble free) tuning knobs with something a little nicer, but that's about all I can thing of to add. These elixer strings are so bright and clear, too... But time will tell how the sound is effected with age.
Sound
:

The sound and tone on the Big Baby is unbelievable... on my particular example, there is no buzzing or other typical problems associated with cheap guitars. Seems to have been set up expertly. Another reason to applaud Taylor is for their amazing consistency in manufactoring. Whereas with many makers, it is basically a Crap shoot, every one I have talked to says they felt the same way when they played the BB. Not just mine, but many at different stores all over town. This is a guitar I would feel safe ordering On-line, because they all seem to be very similar. I have seen some makes, for instance, where you pick one off the wall at the store and strum it, and it sounds like a chorus of angels... then you grab the next one and it has a world of problems. Not so with Taylors... All of the BB's I have played sound pretty much the same with no major variations. The bass is a little weak, but we knew it would have to be when we bought a downsized, thin bodied guitar, didn't we? To get the bass this mellow and yet clear, with reasonable volume in a smaller guitar is really amazing, so I won't fault them for it. The mids and highs are positively singing. The sound is the one thing that makes all my guitarist friends so envious when they try it. So I have to give it high marks here.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
Action is a little high, in my humble, not overly experienced opinion. Seeing that others have also said that in their reviews verifies what I thought I had noticed myself... Apparently that can be rather simply adjusted though, so I won't complain about that. That neck, By the way, is very easy to adjust which is a testament to Taylor's new technology in this area, also. The build quality is impeccable, another thing every single person I have showed it off to says... and again, while the finish isn't flashy... What they do give you is done absolutely perfectly! IT's A TAYLOR!!! DUH!!
Reliability/Durability
:
9
Haven't had it long enough to give a believable opinion of durability. Can say, though that it is well made, and feels solid, allthough very light. Would I use it in a gig without backup? Absolutely... (but I would bring one anyway, because nothing is perfect...) But I would be just as confident in this guitar as any other I can think of.

Of course I've picked up my share of martins and gibsons, but not enough to compare them head to head with the big baby... Here we go: Sitka Spruce solid top with laminated Sapele back and sides (Calabo sandwiched between a ply of Sapele on either side, a normal budget trick, although not altogether bad). Neck is mahogany with a decent Ebony fretboard. The choice of woods was superb, no blemishes in the wood, obviously Taylor takes pride in even the low end of things. Finish is a nice satin, however cleaning it is another story. I intend to call Taylor on how to clean this finish, becuase normal gloss polish would just shine a matte finish (not a good thing). Body style is a 15/16 size non-cutaway dreadnaught. Tuners are a cheap chrome things, hold okay but I will definatly be replacing it with gold Grovers or Schallers. Gig Bag is heavy duty and is excellent quality, even came with a truss rod adjustment tool. This is great craftmanship for a budget guitar. However, my main complaint is the the butt-end strap button does not come with the pre-drilled strapjack hole. Now I have to bore one, which is disapointing since Taylor bores these standard on every guitar they make (save the 3/4 size Babys).
Sound
:

Ah yes, sound. Tough factor, now I'm going to judge according to my experience. The Sitka top resonates like a dream, excellent wood. However, the Calabo/Sapele back and sides choke the sound quite a bit. Now thats not to say the sound is bad, actually I was quite impressed. After trying out Takamines and Ovations, this was astounding. It has that Taylor Tone, thats to say that its bright, but not edgy. Its slighty warmer on the bottom end than other guitars (due to the calabo) but lacks deepness often found on rosewood guitars. The one major complaint I have is that the A string doesn't blend with the rest, it often ends up droning. It does have a b string compensated saddle which helps intonation, but it still is a little dead. Elixer Nanos light gauge sound very nice.

This is where Taylor shines. One look at this guitar compared to others and you see how Taylor puts pride into their instruments. Neck (with its bolt-on appearence) was nice and tight, nicely polished, and the set up was nice. However, the action was a little high but with a little adjustment it was fine. The copyright symbol by the Taylor logo never ceases to piss me off, but I guess its necessary. The grain on the wood was superb, and the bride pins were decent but not great. Black plastic can never take the place of ebony to me.

VERY light guitar, due to laminate and lack of bracing on the back. Seems sturdy, but you need to be careful not to swing it around. Strap buttons were nice and tight, large too. Again, the lack of a strapjack is quite annoying. I would gig with a backup becuase I always do, nothing to do with the guitar quality.

THis is by far my favorite company. Extremely friendly staff takes much pride in their job, and this company is probably the most caring and compassionate of any. They care as much for Baby buyers as they do for 914ce buyers. I get Wood&Steel every 3 months and I got a registration e-mail thanking me for my purchase. Their resourse web page is very useful, and this company never ceases to impress me. Kudos to Taylor, they will always get my first choice in acoustics (which they will be reciving my payment for a 514ce any day now, be on the look for a happy review).

My Big Baby 306gb was made in 2000. With all the standard features-mine has a pick guard. She's not an exotic beauty that calls you from afar with her looks. She's plain and simple. How do I like the sound? Well let me put it this way-I've be playing fingerstyle guitar since 1975. I have been taught by some pretty impressive teachers including Will Schmid (Author), and have taken seminars from John Fahey and Leo Kottke. I know tone when I hear it--This guitar has it-It's well defined, crisp, mellow-everything that you could ask for. If you can't make this guitar sing-it's you-not the guitar. For many years I thought if I only had this expensive guitar or that beautiful one I'd sound better-not true. It's a trap you can easily fall in. I read Van Halen's main guitar for a number of tours was one he made himself for a couple hundred bucks and that he loves cheap effects. Think about it.

You know the features. Very very plain Jane looks. Almost boring, however that Taylor ebony/mahog fretboard and neck are the absolute best. The tuners are cheap and need to be replaced immediately. Did I say I love the neck? Thin and perfect. Hey, they had to do something to keep the cost down. The quality is Number 1. This guitar is built very well for it's price range. Gold Grover tuners will dress it up a little. BB reminds me of a Volvo, plain but great car. Having Taylor on the headstalk is HUGE! Great Gig Bag! I was planning to buy a 300-400 series Taylor but the sound of the Big Baby stopped me. For $300 I just could not justify purchasing a more expensive Taylor. So sharp and precise. Well balanced tone. I love the sound this guitar produces. It does rival many $1,000 guitars. Played it next to a new Martin DX1 R and everyone was amazed. Martin sounded like it had a blanket over it. This guitar is very light and the satin finish will ding easily. Guitar seems fragile like I could compress it without much pressure. Probably why it sounds so good! You must humidify!!!!! I let the humidity drop to around 33% for a month in my guitar room and the frets became exposed! Bought a room humidifier and it is much better.
I think the guitar is reliable but not durable. Change those cheep tuners, they wont hold a tune!

I've now owned my bib baby for about 2 years. It came with a nifty truss rod wrench and a nice padded gig bag. It's a solid sitka spruced topped 20 fret 15/16 size body. The big baby has a very nice satin top and nice rosette as well. But there are some problems folks., The tuners are TERRIBLE. I bought the big baby expecting all Taylors to come equipped w/ Grovers, but they're no name crappy tuners. If you're a strummer, have fun re-tuning every minute. The action also is way too high. No bracing on the back whatsoever-probably how they kept the price so low, and maybe why the guitar doesn't sing that well.
Sound
:
3
The baby sounds very rich.....with new strings on it, that is. The elixirs that come with it dont show what sound they actually make with normal strings (cause most of us cant afford 13 bucks a pop for elixirs). When you string on a fresh set, they'll sound great for a few days and then get very dull. The high's are great, but don't expect any bottom end. The bass is very unsatisfying, but what do you expect from such a small guitar with no bracing?
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
6
This guitar is great to look at. Very simple. The sitka spruce top dents easily, but is nice. The set up is not great at all. The action when i got it was way to high. I thought a simple truss rod turn would do the trick, but then the strings buzzed. There's no happy medium with a fast action without string buzz. The top bracing inside was not sanded cleanly. Strap buttons are very nice and strong. Not many obvious flaws out of the box. The back wood is sapele, which is pretty sweet looking.
Reliability/Durability
:
9
The area where the baby shines-durability. I wouldn't have a problem taking it to the beach or throwing it in the back of a car for a gig. Its cool to have the Taylor logo on your headstock. The strap buttons are very solid. Finish is a little chippy, but looks nice.

I've been playing for 14 years. I own a Les Paul Custom, a Clapton Fender Strat, a taylor 714ce cedar top, and an Ibanez Artwood 500. I dont regret buying this guitar b/c its fun to dink around on sometimes, but for the cash, I would have rather gotten an Artwood-that is one INCREDIBLE line of acoustics. If you dont mind retuning a lot, and dont mind an insanely high action, then this guitar is not a bad buy. Just play it carefully before buying.

Nice sound for the price and especially when you consider the size of this guitar. It is loud and bright but overall the sound could be balanced a bit better. It also lacks the sustain of a full size.

Here's where I had the problem. I had this guitar for almost a year and the action became so terrible I could literally wedge my thumb between the fretboard and the strings. I took it to a local shop to have the action lowered and the tech told me that the neck was warped. So i sent the guitar in to Taylor and they did a neck replacement on it, now it plays fine. So for the initial setup I give it a zero and for the way it plays now a 10, which averages out to a 5.

I got this guitar as a beginner and have been pleased with it ever since. It was made in the USA and came with a gig bag. I paid about $300 for it with the gig bag. I have owned it for about a year now and have been pleased with the overall performance.
Sound

The sound is very good for a cheaper priced guitar. I have not played very many guitars but friends who own other more expensive guitars comment on the sound it produces. The basses are very mellow and the highs are great.
Action, Fit, & Finish

When I first purchased this guitar the action was too high. I got sore fingers everytime I played it. I also found that it was causing me to grip the neck too hard and it wasn't allowing me to have smooth motions when changing frets. I later had a shop lower the action and they shimmed the neck since it is a screw on neck which was great. It plays very good now and the neck has a truss rod which is also a plus.

Made in the USA. I got mine with a chrome stand, a money gig bag two sets of elixir strings, strap, a bag of picks... but all that is just chump change compared to the moniness of my new Bebe. I love the size, it fits so comfortably under my armpit... yo ! ebony !
so simple, yet divine. i guess "simply divine" would perfectly describe it for me.

I'm a song writer, I also like to woo women with my music. I gave my old guitar away and all my friends got like 3000 dollar taylors and whatnot... but lemme tell you... I just took one strum on this 240 dollar guitar and I could not get it out of my heart. It literally struck a chord w/me... people say it's missing low end, but if you tune it right, it sounds soooo great... my friend who has this Taylor 25th anniversary brazilian wood blah blah blah guitar simply couldn't get over the sound. it's great... really. i would give a higher score, but there is not an option for scores above ten. rich. full. bright. you can play soft, pick it up and down, harmonics, strum like a mother, and it responds like an obedient child. get it. promise it's good.

The first time i played this guitar-it sounded sweet..hummed like a 310. I picked it up because it was super cheap..only 290 on sale with a bag. I've had it for about a year now and I wish i would have invested in a full size dreadnaught. It just doesn't sound as full as a dreadnaught-the sound is very rich (especailly w/ new elixirs) but it doesnt compare to the sustain of a full size.

Everyone knows the BB's features by now - 15/16 size dreadnought, solid spruce top, laminated back/sides, ebony fretboard, Elixer strings, etc. This is a unique product that attempts to create the maximum in playability and sound for the minimum of bucks. Thus, what is sacrificed is cosmetics. What you get is exactly what you need if you are looking for a great playing and sounding guitar for couch, travel, etc.
Sound
:
10
Excellent, well-balanced, well-articulated sound that does tend toward the bright side which does not mean a lack of bass. While admittedly not a bluegrass "percussion guitar" with big bass like a full-sized Martin (I have a truly wonderful HD-28 for that purpose), it's balanced sound is very pleasing in all registers which really is a Taylor hallmark (I also have a Taylor 414ce which excels in this regard also). The BB's sound, like pretty much all Taylors, is like listening to reference-quality speakers that are true to the sound vs. artificially colored speakers like Bose, etc.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
For a $300 guitar, the fit and set-up from the factory are excellent. The finish is quite simple and unassuming (they could improve a bit on the evenness of the burn on the laser-carved "rosette"). The action is simply so good that it is one of the key reasons for buying this guitar (it puts a much more expensive Gibson acoustic to shame). This quitar is very easy to play for long periods of time.
Reliability/Durability
:
8
Possibly the only real question I see. Only time will tell how well it will hold up given the lack of back bracing, the arched back, etc. On the converse side, it is very light and comfortable to play. My rating is based more on uncertainty than experience.

I just went on a tour of their factory in El Cajon, CA - highly recommended. They have a true passion for guitars and their manufacture. Overall, a really great value - probably the best out there for what this guitar aims to be. I've got too many guitars now as it is, but I just could not resist adding it to my collection given the price. I've played on and off for 30 years and now just play for my own enjoyment and relaxation. The BB just felt so right in my hands that it cried out to become the new "couch guitar" of choice. For $300, how could I resist?

Made in the US of A, Solid Sitka Spruce top, laminated Sapele sides solid Mahogany neck, Satin finish, ebony neck and bridge, die-cast silver tuners, 15/16 size body are the basic featues of this guitar.
Rosette has "engraved" design and there are no braces on the back of this guitar. Overall looks kind of cheap but, I would worry a little if this guitar looked richer (with inlays and good tuners etc.) at this price range. It would mean they sacrificed something important, probably craftmanship.
Arched back, and extremely thin body, kind of neat, because it reminds me of when I could be so close to the sound board (before my belly came out ;))
Came with nice looking gig bag, not too protective but looks classy, after all it is a Taylor.
Sound
:

This is difficult. Many of my students seem to think that the louder a guitar can play the better the sound and I think this a well mistaken concept. The Big Baby has a loud clear sound and the sound is good but not excellent. Please don't be offended because sound is preference and I am just stating what I think. The Big Baby is well balanced and brings out the maximum posibility from the body shape and price. Therefore, for $300, the sound is at it's best. I think Taylor is good at this, and that's why Taylor is one of my favorites.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
8
Action was almost perfect. I wanted the action to come down just a tiny tiny bit so I adjusted this with the truss rod though this is not the best way to do it. Though the parts (tuners, saddle, bridge pins, etc) are cheaper, Taylor sets this guitar up like it was one of their higher ends. The people (or person who set my guitar up) must love guitars.
The Finish? Well....
But again I'd rather have them cut costs on finish than the essential parts that effect sound.

My ratings are overall low (8) but I rated the Taylor 414K as a 9 so actually an 8 is excellent.
I am very spoiled in a sense that I have played for over 20 years and now practice with a Breedlove and Taylor 414K.
The buyer needs to be able to specify his needs before buying this guitar. Just to carry around, the Big Baby is full size, more fragile and in a gig bag. No benifits. For a main guitar it's not beautiful and is cosmetically cheap though the sound exceeds that of lower end Martins and Takamines.
So who would buy this guitar?
For me, since I had to do a lot of begging to my wife before I bought my Taylor 414K and Breedlove, I am reluctant to taking it on trips. I would rather leave it home, and if stolen, pick up my insurance check and get replacements. I am what you would call a guitar addict and play at least four hours a day (usually more) so there is no way I can go on a trip without a guitar. (I guess it's beter than smoking huh?)
I think you can see why the Big Baby was a logical choice for me.
It's a good guitar, I would choose it over the Martin DM, Larrivee's parlor and even Takamines Santa Fe series.

This one is a 2001 model with the standard Sapele laminated back and sides, solid Sitka spruce top with laser-etched rosette, tortoise shell pickguard, ebony fingerboard (with pearloid dots)and ebony bridge (outstanding for an entry level guitar!), mahogany neck, macarta nut and tusq saddle, chrome tuners, and satin finsh. It is the dreadnought body style, but 15/16 scale of a regular dreadnought. It came with a cool Taylor gig bag and an adjustment tool. The neck is bolted on with screws that are exposed at the 16th fret. It came with strap buttons already installed, so that was really nice. I would have given it a higher score, but let's be real....this guitar is not meant to be displayed.....it is meant to be PLAYED!!! If you prefer CHASING supermodels rather than DATING(cute) co-eds, then this guitar is not for you. Visually, this is a no-frills guitar......but the sound is anything but that!!!

I play everything from country to soft rock to folk and pop. This guitar is extremely versatile. Fingerpicking is easy and produces clear notes all the way up the neck. It can also handle some hard strumming, with just the slightest buzzing. The volume is proportional to its size. Their is not much bass to this guitar (I've only had it for about 3 months and it does seem to be opening up a little more every day), but I didn't expect it to sound like a D-35. I recently played a $600 Larrivee D-03 with solid mahogany back and sides, and this Big Baby with its laminated sapele (similar to mahogany in tone) back and sides sounded just as clear in the mids and highs, but warmer in the lows. Overall, the Big Baby was a better sounding guitar for half the price. This guitar is not one that you would want to record with, but the sound is definitely richer than many guitars costing twice as much.

If you are looking for a guitar that you can leave lying around next to the couch to play while you are watching TV, this is the one for you. If you are looking for a guitar to take on camping trips (to accompany your singing.... not to use for kindling), this is the one for you. If you need something to learn on, and you want it to take you beyond that point, this is the guitar for you. If you want a guitar with great sound and action at a price that won't make you cry (like a Big Baby! Ha! Ha!) if you put a scratch on it, then this is the guitar for you. If you treat your gear like crap and you are into smashing things, then this guitar (or any guitar for that matter) is NOT for you......seek counseling.

I have four acoustics and think I know a bad one from a good one. To be honest, if i'd paid #1000 for this guitar i'd be pleased as punch. Seeing as I paid a quarter of that price i'm bowled over. If has a bright, balanced tone and projects superbly considering the size. The top resonates beautifully and will only get better with time. The high notes are thin-ish and the bass notes very rich.

:

Excellent set up, fine-tuned by the technician at the dealers. The action is very low, which is a nice change from my other guitars. I can get much more 'speed' from this guitar as the effort required to play it is minimal. This is my first experience with Elixir strings too, which have a light polymer coating to reduce friction on the bass strings. Sounds weird, but damn me it works.
One criticism is that playing such a low action in conjunction with a capo produces a lot of string buzz.
The guitar is well finished with a couple of quibbles, the scratchplate is lifting slightly which is a fault with all Big Babies, and the screws on the neck are exposed. Pick one up and play it, and you won't notice either of these things.
Comes with a high quality tan Taylor-embossed gig bag which is very very nice, plus alan key and padded strap.

If this guitar was stolen, i'd buy a shotgun and track down and kill the thief (and his family) or offer him my dog in exchange for the guitar.
I compared it to other Taylors, some Tacoma's in the states, and a few Takamines. They are all nice, but trying any of them in comparison with the Big Baby and then trying to justify the price hike is a waste of time.

for the store i bought it from, they gave me the gig bag. other places like guitar center charges the same price and an extra $30 for the bag.

21 frets, neck a bit on the thin side. no pickups. 15/16 size dreadnought
has a shell-pattern pickguard
VERY NO FRILLS. as minimalist as they come.
soundhole has a laser-burned diamond pattern. oh, it comes with ELIXER poly-web strings, very nice quality!

you can tell from looking at it that very little time was spent on the appearance b/c ALL of their attention was put into to make the tone and playability. the materials
were of high quality.

I own several electric guitars and wanted an accoustic. I was aiming to get a good value and great tone, I think I found it. I wanted a good brand without a lower line name (i.e. epiphone or sigma), and i wanted a guitar made in the USA. The tone is very rich, very bright. When strummed hard, some guitars will buzz, but the big baby actually stays clear, loud, and crisp, but livelier. My music style is a mix of blues, classic rock, alternative, grunge, and radio pop. basically anything that's full with energy, emotion, or sounds good. I wanted something rhythmic, like a guitar i can play while i sing. This is that type of guitar. If you want to play pure soloing or finger-picking, perhaps this isn't for you. For great rhythm and setting a rich background, this is the best bang for buck. The only thing i don't like is that string bending is a bit hard b/c i'm more accustomed to soloing and playing blues licks. As long as you use a pick, single note sounds good.

The guitar was set up well. I picked it right off the wall and it's ready to play. parts are connected very well. the only thing is that the neck color is black, but the color's a bit fading (the blond color wood shows through the black). there's black philips screws on the 16th frets where they connect to the guitar. maybe it's a more solid design for the price, i don't know. but there are no flaws that take away from the tone. The wood, construction, and fretwork is flawless. saddle fit correctly, etc. all the stuff is made here in the USA, in El Cajon, that goes a long way in my book. there was no major shipping across from the other coast, so probably no mishandling or changing of temperature or moisture (no warping, etc.) it's probably less than a 30 min drive from taylor's office to guitar trader.

I think this guitar will probably withstand live playing. It's a satin finish though, so it might scratch easier. but it's got the pickguard. I probably wouldn't be thrashing something really hardcore w/ this one (that's what an electric's for!), but I can really see myself performing with this.
Strap buttons are solid.
I think I can depend on it, and probably wouldn't use a backup.

never had to deal with them, that's a good thing. building a good product is the best costumer support, meaning I never have to call them about problems because there aren't any.
the warranty is for the life of the guitar.

I've been playing off and on for 5 years. practice a lot from books and the net, taken some lessons, played in a garage band, probably look into the open-mic scene and local colleges just for shits and giggles. hopefully start puttin' stuff on the net. if by some odd chance I get lucky I might get into it full-on, but for now I'll be a weekend warrior. i'm an amateur/intermediate player.
I own a parker fly deluxe, kramer pacer, marquise(chinese strat knockoff), and a takamine g-126 (classical guitar). for amps i own a pignose portable and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (12"). Also gots some stomp boxes but that's another story altogether.
I shopped around online and around locally for alternatives and asked a lot of questions. it finally boiled down b/t the martin d-15, the ovation celebrity, the fender tele/stratacoustic, or the taylor big baby. the martin is more a lead-type guitar and pricier (near $600), and the ovation's are more than $100+ more than the big baby and they're made in korea. the statacoustics are very tinny and sustain is crap; they're made to play hooked up to an amp. i might get the others when I have more money.
If it were lost or stolen, I'd feel like crap b/c it is a good buy and a good product. I would get another guitar tho, or upgrade to a higher priced taylor (later!).
I don't quite like the lack of features, but for now I value tone over appearance and features. this guitar serves its role extremely well. It's the best in its category.
I love the TONE, it can compete with the best. for that I give it a 10.

Sound

Very "clean and crisp" sound which is perfect for playing all types of music, as long as you play with a pick. If you like to finger-pick, the sound is very soft, and you can hardly hear if there's any back ground noise.

After having the guitar for a little over a month, the bridge began to pull away from the body of the guitar. When I called by dealer to report the problem, I did not have any problem getting the guitar sent off for repair. Being promised the guitar would be back in 3 weeks, sadly it took 5. When I got the guitar back, I was very shocked that Taylor sent me a brand new Baby instead of just fixing the brige. Not sure what was up with that, so I called Taylor, but I did not receive a straight answer as to why I got a whole new guitar out of the deal. My first Big Baby had a much prettier design in the wood and for some reason seemed to be lighter than my second. "Go figure!" Taylor did however change the warranty from a one year to a life time for their entire line of Baby's. (Even if you purchased your Baby prior to the conversion.) I've not had any problems as of yet with my second Big Baby, however a local guitar shop told me that they have had several complaints about the bridges pulling up from a Taylor guitar and said that this could be because Taylor doesn't "season their wood". Taylor definitely is not your traditional guitar manufacturer such as Gibson or Martin, and I recommend anyone buying a Taylor to check out their history on their web site.

I don't play on stage myself, but this guitar would be great for any gig. Even though my Big Baby had a flaw from the start, it seems though that it is a very durable guitar. I've even banged it lightly a couple times and it didn't even get a dint! The strap buttons seem solid, but I would recommend a locking strap with for any guitar. Overall seems to be very dependable.

Taylor's customer support didn't tell me exactly what happend to my guitar when it was sent off for repair, but they were very persistant to return my phone calls and email. Taylor even changed the warranty from a one year to a life time, so I can't complain.

I've only been playing about 6 months, but in comparison to my Santa Rosa and Hondo parlor guitar the quality is FAR better. If the guitar was stolen or lost, I would have to say that I would go for a cheap Martin, or Sigma. I also find my finger tips swollen and blistered from playing, even though my fingers are very well broken in. I love the guitars finish and look. If you are into "finger pickin'", I wouldn't recommend this guitar because the sound doesn't carry and is too soft. Throw in a pick and the sound is incredibly loud. I prefer my cheap 'ole Hondo parlor guitar when playing without a pick. My friend has a Fender acoustic and the Big Baby's look and sound puts his to shame. Anyone who sees the guitar and plays it says it is the best guitar they've played. You definitely get your money out of this one!
