Late 60's Teisco Vox Phantom copy, made in Japan. With your standard 3 pickups, on/off and lead/rythm switches, and wacky, oversized vibrato arm. Its sort of electric blue with a matching head stock and a fake wood pickguard. It's pretty bad ass looking, and the trem and everything works pretty well. The plywood neck makes me really nervous though, i feel like i could wrench the thing clean off the guitar (although that probably wont actually happen.)

Sound : 10
Okay, this is what makes this guitar stand out. 3 single coils, you'll recognize them if you see them, the kind with screws instead of pole pieces. At first i was kind of sketched out about them, cause ive had some bad experiences with these kind of pickups, but the ones on this teisco are loud and proud. i even tried yelling into them to make sure they werent those crap microphone ones a lot of old japanese guitars have, and i guess i lucked out. teh rythm setting took to my vox tone bender very well, creating a nice, buzz saw trashy garagepunk kind of noise. clean they have a nice full 60s tone with a lot of highs. but what really got me was the lead setting, which seems to sound like crap on a lot of these japanese things. it was lower in volume than the rythm, and was almost too trebley for even me, but not quite. its a kind of evil, hyper twangy surfy tone that sounded great clean and with the tone bender through my 63 epiphone constellation. this guitar can make some rad 60's trash, which is great for me. plenty of balls. i havent fucked around with the pickup on/off switches much cause they're a little touchy and can get knocked to off pretty easily, and then its a lot of work to get them back. typical teisco quality for you there. i would recommend not playing this through one of them new fangled digital amps or those wierd super fx digital pedals. i am sure it will sound awful, but i imagine if you buy this thing you have a tube amp anyway.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
well, this is the kind of junky part. the acton is okay, the neck is actually pretty smooth and good except for the piece of shit plywood aspect. the bridge is pretty nice too and the trem doesn't fuck the tuning up too bad. now the bad part. yep, you guessed it, the tuners are absolutely horrible. they are the shitty open back kind, and man do they suck! about half the time turning the key does nothing, and the rest of the time its jerky, inconsistent, and hyper sensitive. they are terrible. i will definitely be replacing these.

Reliability/Durability : 7
gee, i dont know if you would want to play this without a back up. i sure as hell wouldnt, at least untill i get some new tuners put on it. but hey, its a 40 year old budget guitar, what do you expect? the body the finish have held up well, but that plywood neck freaks me out. ither than that though it seems pretty tough. just dont throw it around or anything.

Customer Support : No Opinion
ha! good one.

Overall Rating : 8
well, i pretty much bought this because of its looks, and was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't a total piece. i have a '93 MIJ 62 strat re issue, which is pretty much a rock, so im going to have to get used to the slight chintzy-ness of this thing. but it looks and sounds rad, so i can just go from there and deal with anything else.
