This Univox Badazz is from 1971 most likely made in Japan. Has 22 frets, double cut away Mahogany body that resembles a Hagstrom II and thin U bolt on neck similar to fast necks such as Hagstrom and Ibanez, two 12-pole Humbuckers, Hagstrom like vibrato, Red finish (which looks awesome due to slight fading around the humbuckers, so it's got a bit of a burst look), very good no name tuners, rosewood fretboard, white (nicely faded tv yellow now) neck binding, and block inlays.

Sound : 9
This guitar seems as if it could handle any type of music, even Death Metal, Grindcore,Metalcore, etc; although I play more along the lines of Mastodon, BlackTusk, Queens of the Stone Age, The Melvins, Blitzkid, The Misfits, Black Flag, Mister Monster , and The Sword depending on what band I'm playing in at the time. I use a Crate Blue Voodoo, Univox 1226B, and for practice a Peavey Rage. The Pedals I run are a Zoom Ultra Fuzz, Danelectro French Toast (Foxx Tone Machine clone), EHX Graphic Fuzz (I use this sometimes as a slight OD and EQ), and a Jimi Hendrix JH-1B Wah. It's got a slight hum just depending on your volume and it seems to go away sometimes. The sound is pretty warm and fat even when slightly scooped, but is very tweakable. My general guitar sound would be The Sword, Mastodon, The Melvins, and a bit of QOTSA all sort of rolled into one. Low and low-mid oriented with a decent high end and fuzzy. An added bonus is that you can scream into the pickups which I found pretty bitchin'.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
This guitar is 36 years old or so and the Hardware is still largely immaculant, very shiney chrome. The inlays and binding have yellowed slightly, I actually like this and it's hard to avoid with older guitars but does look nice. The bridge pickup is factory set slightly higher than the neck. The action is very low, buzzes slightly when unplugged, but nothing noticeable when played amplified.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar has a few dings and two smaller but noticeable chunks out on the sides, but no severe blemishes on the top. Hardware is good and still in new condition. The finish is still nice aside from the battle scars which come with years of playing, the strap buttons are ace. The guitar is great and is going to get a lot of playing time.

Univox has been defunct since the late 70's. I think whatever company owned them or controlled them has morphed into Korg.

Overall Rating : 10
This guitar is great, a steal, a real diamond in the rough. Most people find Japanese copys like Univox to be cheap when honestly they were at the very least equal to their American counterparts. I love the action on this guitar, the sound is shaping up to be great, and the shape is cool as hell. All in all it was money well spent, I'm considering picking up up another.

1971 Univox Badazz. Made in JAPAN. 22 frets on Rosewood. Cherry Red Finish. Has the vintage look due to age. Stock pups originally H/H 12-poles, switched them out. SG and S-100 body style. Tune-O-Matic bridge. Replaced tuners to Takamine's, stays in tune great. It was a hand-me-down guitar from my uncle who got a 1970's Gibson SG along the way. The guitar is in excellent condition with a few nicks here and there for 20+ years in a Colorado basement.

Sound : 9
Umm rock and roll? Anyone who owns this guitar or a SG has to really love rock. I play it through my Traynor YCV80Q 4x10" Tube Amp. The guitar used to be noisy because my uncle switched the bridge to a single-coil that eventually got really old. My uncle also wired it with a 5-way rotary switch. It was very bright.

I put new pups in. A Kent Armstrong Vintage N in the bridge. There is this weird Bartolini Hi-A pup in the neck that I kept, but I will switch it out in the near future. I'm a tele style player, so bridge position is where I usually play at. I replaced the rotary switch with a classic Gibson 3-way switch, 2 volume, 2 tone. There's nothing else you really need. I give it a 9 just b/c my neck pup is too muffled. Bridge pup is excellent. Very balanced pickup with tone at 6 or 7. Cut through the mix maxed out. Middle position gives it a deeper sound. It's really the amp that makes it sound good (Traynor YCV80Q).

Factory setup was okay, not great. I had some pro luthier work done by a friend. Cleaned the frets, oiled it up, intonated it, and now it plays wonderful. The pup heights are good. Higher frets are still a little high for my liking still, but I like to play with really low action. I'm okay with the little buzzes that I can hear, but the audience won't.

Reliability/Durability : 10
It used to be really loud live b/c I play it at church a lot. Once I replaced the pups it was a lot more "quiet-environment" friendly. I can definitely depend on it. I've been gigging w/o a backup for awhile. Maybe when I get a tele I'll have to decide between the two. I've been falling in love with this guitar lately. It's been 100% reliable since the new pups.

Univox went out of business for a long time. I've had it repaired by a really awesome hobbyist luthier. Took him a week to finish it. It plays great!

Overall Rating : 10
Well I've only been playing for 3 years now. Mostly rhythm. I also play a Fender Jazz Bass and Big Baby Taylor. As I mentioned before I play through a Traynor YCV80Q 4x10" Tube amp. I'm slowly acquiring gear. You can only do so much as a college student. I love that I got this guitar for free and it was in the family for so long. My favorite feature is probably the bridge pickup made by Kent Armstrong. I wish I could afford a neck pup right now but I'll save up.

It was introduced in 1971 in Japan. It has 23 frets on a rosewood fretboard with pearl block inlays. It is a solid body electric 6-string with Two tone/Two volume controls, and a three way pick up selector for the two pickups(Humbucker in the bridge,Humbucker in the neck position,)(both have 12 pole pieces.)H/H. I have one in natural color. The body style looks almost like a Gibson SG, and has a Gibson style headstock. It is also a copy of a Guild S-100. It has a tune-o-matic bridge with a tremolo. The tuners are original,non-locking. The neck is very comfortable to play and is fairly fast.(I would compare the necks playability to that of a Les Paul)

Sound : 10
I listen to a variety of rock music and this guitar can do every one perfectly.(Though I mainly play in the style of The melvins,Nirvana, and Black Flag.)the guitar player for Nirvana also plays a Univox, but a different model. I play through a '69 Fender Bassman 4x12 and a Crate 4x12, my distortion pedal is a Digitech hot rod distortion and a Pro Co Rat 2. I often use a compressor/sustainer, and rarely a chorus. The guitars sound is "chunky yet clear" In between bright and mellow, more on the bright side when using the bridge pickup, but when you use the neck pickup it is very beautiful when the amp is on clean. I can get nice controlled feed-back with this guitar. I have no complain at all about this guitar. This will probably be my main guitar for the rest of my life unless something happens.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I bought this guitar at a pawn shop, and the strings were set low with no fret buzz and the playability was unbelievable. I havent changed the pickups or did any work to them and the sound fantastic. The bridge was set low with no fret buzz but I set it even lower for my personal taste. The guitar was in perfect condition. I told my friend that it was made in the seventies and he thought that it was brand new. No flaws. Again no complaints.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar will definantly withstand live playing. It is my main playing guitar. The hardware is over 30 years old with no signs of rust. The finish is great especially on the back of the neck, which is very smooth and very comfortable. The strap buttons hold very well. they are not loose and are placed so that when using a strap it is very comfortable. Very Very dependable, I could use it with out a back-up at a gig.

The company has quit making the guitars, but there is a lot of information on this guitar on the internet. And a nice website to go to for pics of this guitar and info would be www.univox.org

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for five years and have had a few guitars and my friends have had guitars that i have played, but this is my favorite guitar ever. If this guitar was stolen or lost I would kill myself because I cant even find these guitars on the internet except at univox.org, but I would try to find the same guitar. I love the way the guitar looks, plays, sounds, basically everything. My favorite features would be the pickups because the are very versitle. I played my friends gibson SG and that was my dream guitar, but to many people had tose guitars and I like my guitar over any other guitar, that is why I bought it of course. In my opinion this guitar is a very versatile, very playable guitar. If you ever have the chance to buy one don't hesitate to do so.
