Gold flake finish Les Paul copy. Original pickups, tuners, bridge, tailpiece all looked like original Gibson Les Paul (no wonder they were sued). 22-frets. Hard shell case. Made in Japan. I have replaced most of the hardware. Now has Gotoh tuners, DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups, new bridge, tailpiece, and electronics from StewMac. Action better than a lot of Gibson Les Pauls. My first solid-body electric, bought used in 1981 for $109.

I play this through three rigs: a Sunn S100 head with an Ampeg 2x12 speaker, a Roland Cube 20 c. 1981, and direct into a mixer through an Electro-Harmonix Double Muff distortion pedal. Sounds fantastic each way, though nothing else can match the S100. I also use a digital delay pedal on all three rigs. Whether heavily distorted or with just a bit of crunch, the guitar sounds great. It sounds great clean as long as it goes through either a compressor or a delay pedal.

I bought the guitar used, so I cannot say how it was set up at the factory. I have never had a complaint about the set-up, nor has any other guitarist who has played this instrument. The action is low and fast, the sustain is good, and the tone fantastic. No flaws except those caused by wear and tear. My brother in law had a Gibson Les Paul Custom that he just sold for $2300. The action on my Ventura was better by far, which is one of the reasons he was not happy with the Gibson.

I am an ametuer and do not play live very often, but every time I have it has been on this guitar with no backup. As rebuilt, I believe this is a guitar that will stand the test of time. The original hardware was OK but not great: the metal was a bit soft and the tuner ratio was a bit coarse. The finish looks the same as it did when I bought it 25 years ago. It has held up very well.

I have been playing guitar since 1978. Currently my other guitars are a Takamine Jumbo 6-string, a Fender Resonator, an Ibanez acoustic bass guitar, a Spanish Classical Guitar, and a lap steel guitar I designed and built myself. I would gladly match up my Ventura against any Epiphone or Gibson Les Paul. If I were to lose my Ventura, I would spend $600 to $800 to replace it with either a Parker, Fender Strat, or Gibson SG.

The guitar is painted black with a Rosewood fingerboard. It has a very thin LP style shape, that is thinner and wider than a LP. Looks like a steamrolled LP maybe. The tuners are chrome, look like the gibsons, except for where they connect to the guitar. They have held up and were reworked recently and work good. This guitar has no serial number, and simply is stamped on the bolt-on neck "Made in Japan". It has 24 frets, but they are stealthy, as there is no inlay at the 24th fret. I have had people argue that it was 22 fret, and I had to make them count them. This guitars features were identical to the Gibson l6-s, except its neck is bolt-on. For a thin guitar it is heavy. (Gibsons were made of maple, I think this one is too!) It came with passive pup's but now has active (EMG)

This guitar can suit most types of music. I plug it into a ADA mp-2 (awesome) to a mesa 50/50 to a Marshall 1960A with Vintage 30's. Its not to noisy the way I have it set up. Mine is all stock except the electronics which have been replaced with a EMG's (81 bridge, 85 neck). I probably should have left the electronic alone, as there never was a problem, I just thought it would be better with EMG's. The originals were capable of many tones witht the 6 way selector. It has a bright tone that is punchy with tight bass and searing highs. It can really scream
Action, Fit, & Finish

The action on this guitar is low. The small frets and low action, coupled with the maple neck and rosewood fingerboard make this guitar easy to shred on. Access to all frets is great with the deep cut-away. The fit and finish seems great, and I have had this guitar since 1983, and it stills plays great. I do not remember the original adjustments as this guitar was adjust many times over the years, but getting the action low did not cause any excessive buzzing

It broke at the neck joint with the head after numberous falls. After sitting in my closet for 10 years, I took it to be fixed and set up. They fixed the break, leveled and shaped the frets, adjusted the truss rod and its playing awesome again after all these years.

I give it 8-9 overall. But I really love this guitar, as it was my first and only electric from 83-95, and served me well. I was always amazed at how this guitar could compete with high dollar guitars. After extensive research, I am more excited about this guitar than ever.
I am thinking of buying a real Gibson l6-s to see if they are as great or better than the Ventura copy. I have never seen any other Ventura l6-s copy (you don't see many real gibsons either, and even less copys of this guitar), and judging by the headstock (looks just like the Gibby to me) this is a pre-lawsuit era guitar. I am thinking the value far exceeds any prices that I could buy one for, if any other l6-s Ventura copies exist. There is very little information about this guitar out there

I don't know what year this was made. I'm guessing late 70's/early 80's from the condition (which is worn, but not bad.)
I picked this up in a pawnshop with no strings or bridge so I got a good deal on it - $40. I put a Duncan p/u in the bridge position, replaced the tuners, switch, input jack, and - eventually - the pots. I bought it because my dad used to have a Ventura strat copy that you could breathe on and it would fret.
It looks nearly identical to a Les Paul (which is why they were sued and have stopped making them). I don't know what kind of wood it is. It's black and faded. The stock pickups and tuners are complete crap and MUST be replaced.

I play rock, blues, and metal. It suits rock and blues well. The neck is not polished so it's not that fast. It's quiet. It has good sustain.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

For a cheap guitar, the action is really low - surprisingly low. Better than some Epiphone Les Paul's costing three times as much. The stock pickups are set too high, the tuners and pickups are crap. What you really get is an excellent body/neck that you have to replace the electronics and tuners and you'll have a pretty sweet guitar for very little $$. I give it an 8 simply for the low action.

It sounds more like a telecaster than a Les Paul, but it's great for playing bottleneck. I run it straight through a 50w Juggs amp with no effects and it sounds a bit 'incomplete', though to be honest, I think a thicker string gauge might help.

I've been playing for about 2 years. Other guitars include a strat (proper one), an Eko 6 and Eko 12 (both older than I am) and a Gibson bass which I can't play, but just got to add to my collection. If it were stolen/lost, no, I wouldn't replace it, it's okay, but not great by any means. I adore the look of it but it's heavy and doesn't sound quite right, though I compared it with an Epiphone LP copy, and the Ventura came through with flying colours for sound, finish and overall feel in comparison.

1971 Ventura Les Paul Copy
Purchased new 1972 for 129.95 with HSC in Fairfield, CA.
Made in Japan
Laminated three piece Mahogany Body/Bolt on Neck
Two tone and two volume controls
Black finish, similar to LP Custom, Japanese copy of a tune-o-matic bridge, cheapo stock tuners replaced with Schallers in 1975 with hardshell case.

I owned this instrument for over ten years and never had a complaint...during the same period I owned two Gibson LP Customs, a 73 and a 78 and was not very happy with the sound of those instruments. The Ventura pickups gave a better variety of tones than either of my Gibsons...it also out performed my 78 Gibson RD Custom. I didn't replace this instrument on stage until I bought my Gibson V2 in 1981.

Been playing 40 years, currently own a Fender Reissue 72 Tele Custom, 60 Gretsch 6125 Single Anniversary, 93 Chandler Strat, 96 Guild Starfire IV, 73 Ibanez SG style double neck.
The Ventura was my first 'quality' electric guitar, and I would give my left nut to find this instrument again.
It was everything I expected in an electric guitar. I did screw it up later on by putting a Bigsby tremolo on it, had a hard time keeping it in tune after the installation.

This is an old guitar. it has some clear coat cracks. made in japan serial number 767648, if anyone knows how to date them, please contact me. it's a beautiful sunburst finish, not sure what kind of wood, but it is a bolt on neck, all original hardware, faded gold, it's actually almost silver now with gibson style tuners. nick stock pickups, they're pretty hot. 2 tone and 2 volume knobs, almost an exact copy of a les paul custom, body binding, neck binding and headstock binding. awesome guitar overall. even block inlays. the only thing it's missing is a coil split, which is easily fixed. hardshell case included.

i play punk/hardcore/ska/emo/screamo. it plays perfectly for what i use it for, i'll give it a 10. it can play anything from metal to blues, jazz, and country. it's kind of shrill on the neck pickup. new strings sound awesome on this. i own 6 guitars, and the only one that i like better is my dean icon. i run it through an ampeg v-4. a randall rg75, and an old old haynes road king half stack. no effects other than a proco rat distortion, and that's only sometimes.

I don't know a whole lot about this guitar. I had never heard of a Ventura before. I found it in a music store sitting by a couple used Epiphones and it was only $160 with a hard case. It looks just like a real Les Paul - the headstock is almost the same but it has Ventura inlaid in mother of pearl looking stuff. The neck is glued in and I actually like the neck joint better on this than on a Gibson - it is smooth rather than a big block. All hardware seems to be original. Pickups are 2 passive humbuckers with the traditional Les Paul 2 volume 2 tone setup. Finish is good. It has a nice binding. I have looked all over the internet for info on this thing but haven't found much at all. I would guess this was made in the late 70s??

This guitar suits me very well. I play hard rock and blues. I play this guitar through a Sovtek Mig 50 with a Marshall cabinet and an overdrive pedal. This guitar is not noisy at all. I cranked up my amp the other day just to test to see how much noise I got when I put the guitar in front of the TV. It wasn't bad at all. I would really like to try some high dollar pickups in this guitar. It sounds really good as is. Has a lot of sustain and nice tone.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
8
After the action was adjusted at the store, it plays great. There are a couple slight buzzes in spots. I guess that could be fixed if I raised the action or had the frets crowned but it's not that bad.

I think this guitar would be fine live. It does hold a tune really well. When I first played it, I tried to wreck the tuning by doing all sorts of crazy bends and pretty much violent playing, but it held a tune fine. Hardware does the job it's supposed to. Finish is good. Strap buttons are solid. I would use this guitar at a gig without a backup if necessary.

If this guitar was lost or stolen, I probably couldn't find a replacement for the same price. I would have to buy an Epiphone to compare to it. I did compare this guitar to the Epiphones when I bought it. I really couldn't tell a difference, except the neck on this is a little bit thinner. I got a hell of a deal for $160. I think $300 would still be a good deal ->if you see one like it, try it out. Ignore the name and see how you like it.

What year was it made? Probably late 70s.
Finish? Top is decorated with gold sparkle (and a nice binding).
Make and model of pickups? Replaced original pickups with a Seymore Duncan (neck) and a Dimarzio (bridge).
Body and neck woods? I'd guess mahogany body and neck (looks very nice) with a rosewood fingerboard.
Bridge style? Tune-O-Matic -- gold colored plating is looking rather ragged.
Tuners? Seem cheap, but work OK.
Sound
:
7
How does it suit your music style (and what is that style)? It's pretty well suited to my playing style (rock, blues, and country), but I generally prefer the strat sound.
What amps and effects are you using it with? Carvin 2-12 all tube amp, Marshall Series 9000 tube preamp, Alesis Quadraverb GT, MXR Distortion + (for gain boost).
Is it noisy? On what settings? It's very quiet, even when I'm recording it near a computer monitor.
Rich/Full sound? Bright sound? With the Duncan and Dimarzio pickups, it sounds about as good as any Gibson LP I've heard or played.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
7
How well was the guitar set-up at the factory? (How was the action?) I setup my guitars -- I was able to get the action fairly low without fret buzz. I would have preferred slightly larger frets. Access to the upper frets is slightly restricted by the body.
Did the guitar contain any flaws? Headstock had a minor cosmetic blemish (from previous owner).
Reliability/Durability
:
8
Will this guitar withstand live playing? Yes. I've owned this guitar for about 23 years with no reliability issues.
Does the hardware seem like it will last? Functionally, yes, but astetically some of the hardware is looking rather ragged.
Is the finish good enough to last, or does it seem thin and easy to wear off with lots of playing? Finish is still fine.
Would you use it on a gig without a backup? I did for a few years with no problems. I switched to strat style guitars for live performances in the late 80s and use the Ventura LP as a a recording instrument now.
Customer Support
:
No Opinion
I purchased this guitar used and never had any major problems with it.
Overall Rating
:
7
How long have you been playing? 25 years
What other gear do you own? Fender Stratocaster, Jackson Fusion Pro, Hamer Chapparel, home-made Tele.
If it were stolen or lost, would you buy it again or get something else? If I could get it for $125, I would buy it again.
Anything else you'd like to share? For the price I paid for my Ventura LP, it's a great value. If my ratings seem low, it's probably because I'm comparing it to my other (generally much more expensive) guitars.

1975 Ventura Les Paul copy made in japan (probably Matsomuko)standard
22 fret fingerboard with a twist! its hardrock maple! Its has a flame
maple cap with natural blond finish, cap is not solid carved though,
more like thin veneer glued and bound to main body, but done right!
this lightens it up a bit (a welcome relief compared to its counterpart) and does not seem to lack for sustain, even with a bolt
on neck! neck is an 11 on a scale from 1\10! never seen another cheap
guitar that could compare for feel, action, fret buzz or anything else
for that matter! if this guitar has any delinquincys, the neck makes
up for them! really!! I prefer this guitar to anything I've had yet
or have now for that matter as far as playability goes, and that includes my '80 gold top Deluxe! think I've lost it? JUST PLAY ONE!!
as far as stock hardware, well, you can't have everything! the stock
humbuckers are trash, the machine heads came from the same place!
the gold plated hardware didn't hold up long at all, but the stock
pots and virtually all of the original wiring are still perfect!

How does it sound? out of the box you have a good project guitar!
I know this because I got it brand new, un-touched in '75 for a christmas present. for the elementary years, I didn't know what a
great guitar sounded or played like, It was some years later before I
came to this. After installing a mighty-mite distortion PU in the
bridge, and a Dimarzio PAF in the neck, changing the bridge and tailpiece with with a schaller up-fit for metric applications, a gibson toggle switch, and a set of grover roto-matics w\pearl buttons,
well...simply put, SHE SCREAMS!!! if you like harmonics! this is
harmonic heaven! full rich sustain that would make tom scholz proud!
I've had her for 28 years and... I think I'll keep her!!
Action, Fit, & Finish

Fit and finish from the factory was..good..not great. the neck was
perfect though! I had to remove the "closehanger gauge" strings, and
dial in the string height a bit, pickups didn't matter as I mentioned
earlier, they are no longer with us! cosmetically though, no problems.
It features the "open book" headstock complete with Gibson diamond and
twin stripe pinstriping around the border, right down to the "CUSTOM"
truss rod cover, trapazoid block inlays (black) adorn the maple fingerboard, bookmatched flame maple veneer (beautiful tight pattern)
and black\white 5-layer binding around the top side. This guitar is
loved by everyone who see's and plays it!

Yes! I have played the club scene with this guitar for several years
mainly as a backup though, (I was ashamed of the name in my youth)
I played a '78 pro-deluxe up front that didn't play as well! but I
was more concerned about image at that point in time! go figure?
It has a bullet-proof finish! still looks new on the front and right
up the neck except for slight discoloration from string bending. Not
bad at all for a cheap "knock-off" approaching 30! I want say it is
better for the long haul than the original it portrays, but, that also
depends on the owner\player, I pamper all of my guitars!

Overall, It is my first real guitar, I got it when I was 15, I'm 43
now and I currently own 17 guitars (mostly jap models) I do have an
80 model Gibson "gold top" that I also favor! along with a couple of
strats and one tele (mexican model) throughout my club days, I have owned and sold about 30 or so guitars, nothing on the extravagant
end though! mainly middle of the road models (I'm pretty conservative)
I not so much a collector, just an average joe player (eddie still rules) If I lost this guitar, I would be sick! this is a very unique
guitar that is far better than was intended for the price.

Japanese made sometime in the early 70's I guess. Flame maple top which appears to be plywood/veneer, maple neck, laminated, 3-piece with maple fretboard and black inserts. All-blond finish. Gold hardware and standard 2 humbuckers with 2 tone and 2 volume controls and lead/rhythm switch. Pretty guitar, basically well made, original hardware was kind of cheap. The body appears to be laminated from maple and some sort of wood with a grain like mahogany but that is light-colored. All cavity covers, pickup rings and headstock, as well as inlays on the fretboard are black.

:

When I originally bought it, the stock pickups were like nothing I'd ever seen, humbuckers yes, but with brass covers which were cut way to expose the pole pieces and the bobbins. One set of pole pieces were adjustable the other coil's were square studs. I cannot even remember how they sounded, I immediately replaced the bridge pick-up with a Mighty-Mite super distortion. With this, it sounded great, at least in the lead position. It served me well through my high-school band years. See additional comments in overall rating.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
7
The action was always fantastic on this guitar, that is what attracted me to it (plus it looked cool). The action is very low and does not buzz and with the maple fretboard even I can fly on it. As mentioned elsewhere the hardware was pretty cheap. The only complaint I have is that the bolt-on neck is easy to move, by that I mean it is fairly tightly bolted, but you can change the pitch of the strings by changing the pressure exerted on the neck. The neck is thin though and a little narrower than standard, so this could be a factor. The fit between the neck and body are not the greatest. I may try to replace the screws and neck plate at some point, but it plays so nicely that for the moment I will not bother. The frets are getting a little beat, but it still plays great.
Reliability/Durability

The only "gigging" that I ever did with it was in high school with my band. It did see some abuse, for sure. I also had a buddy of mine borrow it for some gigs, he liked it very much, so much that I had to go by and personally pick it up. I think he was hoping I would forget about it. Then I did something horrible with it, or I should say my parents did. When I moved out of the house, I had other guitars so I left it there. At some point they put it in the attic where it was treated to several (many? perhaps as many as 10!) years of alternate summer and winter temperatures. When I finally did retrieve it, it was still perfect as far as the finish and neck straightness, etc. WOW! I'll have to give it a 10 for that.

I am certainly not a professional player, but I love to play and I am a tinkerer. As mentioned before, I had replaced the bridge pick-up with a mighty-mite and installed a coil tap switch early on. At some point I took a stock pickup (PAF-type) from a D'Agostino LP copy and replaced the original neck pickup with that. Until December 2002 that was they way it stayed. I got to looking at the guitar then and noting the peeling gold on the bridge and tail piece as well as the fact that my brother-in-law gave me a Seymour Duncan JB pickup, I decided to redo it. I ordered up a Gotoh bridge and tailpiece, a new jack plate and a on-on-on DPDT switch. I considered new tuners, but the old ones (while looking pretty bad) were still working quite fine. I lined the control cavity and switch cavities with brass for noise reduction, dropped in the JB pickup and DPDT wired for series-coil tap-parallel and moved the Mighty-Mite to the neck. Then I mounted up the new hardware and intonated it. The results? Amazing! I have never owned any Gibson guitars, certainly played a couple, but I never have played anything that suits me better than this one. That JB pickup wails, the guitar is silent even with your hand off the strings and it sustains forever. I think I might replace the nut as the G-string tends to bind up there and this makes keeping that string in tune a bit difficult. For a 30+ year old POS Les Paul copy that originally cost me 125 bucks, I could not be happier. If you see a Ventura hanging around somewhere, buy it! I certainly would. I will give it a 10 bearing in mind that it is a cheap copy.

I personaly like and play all styles of music (RAP is NOT music) and this ax has done it all. Good sound and plays well although the pick ups don't seem to respond as well some (age maybe?)

I have always done a full adjustment on any guitar I own for maximum performance.
Overall a quality instrument.
The gold finish has almost worn away but all hardware still works flawlessly

I hauled hay all summer to purchase this guitar 30 years ago and have been playing the hell out of it ever since and have never had the need or desire to tote a back up. I orriginally chose this guitar over a gibson les Paul because I liked the narrower neck. (I know, bad financial choice)out of all the guitars I,ve ever owned this is the one I never considered parting with and if I find another one I'll have a back up just for the hell of it!

I've been playing going on 40 years and have owned tons of other guitars and equipment. This truely is an old faithful friend.(and it doesn't crap in the floor!)I'm considering haveing all the hardware gold plated as the old finish has worn understandably. It may have been a little more fun with a whammey bar but that may have just been a ploblem.

i think this guitar was made in the late 60's or early 70's.i saw one exactly the same on ebay that was a 69.it has 22 frets, and the neck is pretty skinny.it has the basic humbucker/humbucker 2 tone,2 volume and 3 way switch configuration.tune o matic and stop bar tail.its a bolt on neck, rosewood colored.

it suits my music style perfectly.i play alot of punk, hardcore and really thrashy grindy stuff.i really beat the crap out of this guitar.i took out the stock pickups and replaced them with some other pickups that were much hotter, and it sounds amazing.i use ghs tnt boomer strings that are .52/.10 .i play it through a rogue tube rider head that pushes a crate gx 4x12" straight cab and a kustom leadIII straight cab.it sounds like any other les paul.i am switching the bridge pickup to a bill lawrence any day now.this thing is going to be a screamer

i am still using the original faded fold hardware (exception is the tuners, were upgraded to sealed ones).i set the intonation every time i change strings.the action is real low and real nice.no deads spots.plays like a dream.i love this guitar to death.i can wail on it for hours and it wont go out of tune, and boy do i wail

this guitar has taken a beating.i replaced the pickups, toggle switch, and tuners.the finish is real nice.i put some staplock deal things on it.i did have to relocate the back strap hole, but other than that everything is fine for a 30 year old guitar.

i have been playing off and on for about 6 years.i just started seriously again this past year.the only thing i wished i asked,is that i could have gotten it cheaper,im always out for a good deal.but i did get it for $100 out the door.the one thing i dont like is the switch placement in it,and any other les paul.i play pretty violently and i am always accidently switching pickups.i plan on moving it down by the volume/tone controls and cut the top to match the bottom horn.
if this was stolen,i would cry like a little emo boy, then go find whoever took it and beat them bloody.i have grown quite attached to this cheap little les paul.i liked it better than the 79 gibson marauder i bought just after it.
