1987 Westone Spectrum DX

Sound : 10
Diverse tone variations unlike any other stock guitar, push/pull pots allow pick up phasing and coupled with various tone controls creates the best tone palette I've owned in a guitar

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
HAs the pearl finish and everything is near perfect as can be stock, also seldom needs harmonic adjustment, just a super stable instrument

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've played this guitar over 20 years and love it more than my wife. Everything has held up to years of Bar room playing and that says TONS

Customer Support : 8
Never had to deal with them before they went out of business, quality was/is THAT GOOD

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I have played now since 1974 and this guitar stack up against the Big Names fantastically. If it were lost I'd be on Ebay in a minute trying to find it's brother or cousin.

I beleive made in 1984 , and definitly in Japan, 22 frets, solid body - neck through, 1 vol 2 tones, h/s/h pickup figs, pickups are westone custom, and personally i beleive to be the greatest ever made, got a gold-ish finish with a black stripe, its got a tuno-o-matic, floyd rose.

Sound : 10
I play modern rock / radio friendly, and it fits my style perfectly, jammin 6 years and never played a better guitar, im really atatched, never noisy, has a very rich full, creamy sound, like it all. i run it throu a DOD grunge pedal, makes amazing together

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
pickups are perfect, everything in line, its a problem to get parts, so i have a machinist make any replacements i may need.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This is my main guitar for live and studio play, very sturdy, and dependable, 20 years old and the finish is holding strong, i could definitly gig without a backup, but u never know, like strings and whatnot, so always have a backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion
there is no customer support, wetone went belly up like 13 years ago, so if u break it, u fix it!

Overall Rating : 10
ive played 7 years now, im very skilled, i own all sorts of studio and stage equipment, i dont know what i'd do without this guitar, i'd go mad, cause i prolly couldn't find another one, i love everything about it, i have no dislikes.

I bought this guitar from new back in the 80s for about #300. It was top of the range before Westone went bust. I've got details on it from an early Guitrist review but Don't recall all of them offhand. It has 22 frets, is solid maple with the neck going straight through the body so it has pretty impressive sustain, with a rosewood fretboard. Two humbuckers plus a single in the middle. The electronics are pretty versatile which is what first attracted me to it: a selector switch for bridge or neck humbucker, or both; one volume control, one tone control for the humbuckers, and one tone control for the single pickup. The tone for the single is also a pull pot for selecting the single pickup, and the tone for the humbuckers is also a pull pot for the phase reversal. The volume control is a pull pot for coil tap. It weighs in at around 8lbs.

Sound : 8
I play rock mostly and this guitar gives a huge range of sounds to suit that style and most others. If you get silly with the selections, you can end up with some pretty dull and muddy tones, but basically it will go from muddy through to very bright and tinny, but with your strat and les paul type sounds in between. I particularly like the phase reversed bridge pickup and the coil tapped neck pickup, and through a Marshall it very rich. It's excellent for a mid-price guitar but the variety of tones means its character is not distinctive so it suits a guitarist searching for his own sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Action and Finish are great. I keep the action fairly low and use 9s, but there are no extraneous noises and it has definitely been put together well. I find the tremolo a bit disappointing as it never seems to sit quite in the right place and I've subsequently adjusted it to let it hang low and out of my way. Some people also complain about the lack of push/pull pots as the pull only pots can be awkward. My feeling is that unless you're jumping between extreme tones from one bar to the next, then this isn't an issue. I've always found it tricky to tune though, as the tuning change a lot when you lock down the strings at the headstock, but when tuned, it stays in tune for weeks with minor tweeks at the bridge tuners.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Well I've had this guitar for 15-20 years and the only thing wrong is a crackly input socket and some roughening of the finish on the bridge saddle and tuners. I could definitely rely on it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
None. The company is long gone.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing on and off for 20 years and there is nothing else I own except my Marshall amp and an old acoustic but I'm starting to play again so I'll may buy a Les Paul Custom soon, and maybe upgrade my Marshall. I don't use pedals as they cover too many mistakes and I get enough distortion from the amp, but I might get some later. I didn't comapre this guitar much when I bought it but I don't regret that as it is so versatile. However, before I buy again, I want to try a few guitars to make sure I don;t miss any of the sounds that I've become accustomed to.

apparently its a 1984 Westone Spectrum Fx made in england. It has 22 frets with a laminated top its got 2 tone controls and one volume i know nothing about the pickups at all its maple body and neck with a black satin finish with a matt finish throught the neck. Its got a strat style with a tun-o-matic bridge which is extremely handy! It has lock nuts just above the top nut i think the tuners are standard, and it has thin frets, i have all the original paper work for the guitar ive only had the guitar for about 2 months and know nothing about it at all accessories wise hmmm..... i can raise the tone and volume controls to get different sounds the tuners on the bridge r very useful and the locking nuts.

Sound : 10
It suits my sound very well, i play a blend of Melodic hardcore punk with hints of a metal unfluence. its good for playing fast palm muted hardcore to fast lead. Im using a Marshall G80R Cd i had a mesa boogie triple rectifier but i missed 2 payments an had it taken away :| but i still get the sounds i like to hear it makes absolutely no noise at all its been well maintained over the years and hardly used. it has so many differnt sounds to play with which opens up a new world for a guitarist theres nothing i dislike about it except when i first tried to restring it and didnt quite know how to work the lock nuts but i got it now! and it hasnt failed to perform or sound bad.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
i didnt get the guitar from a factory i got it from my girlfriends father who kindly donated it to me(because im so charming an cause he spent alot of money on a fender) so i know nothing about it when it was purchased many moons ago! but everything is in really good condition nothing is loose or seems cheap and nasty!

Reliability/Durability : 10
The guitar seems to do ok i play it hard and fast and im very active onstage and it takes it well but i dont abuse it, everything on the guitar is solid just a little dust here and there thats it, i have used it at a gig with no backup i have no choice i had my other guitars stolen :|

er.......u got the wrong fella

Overall Rating : 10

Well as listed above its got 1 volume and 2 tone controlls 2 humbuckers and a single . I dont really know too much about the body parts of guitars. But i have been assured that its got quite a few good features off my freinds and it is better that way from my previous guitars and others i have played as nearly all my freinds have at least one guitar including one greedy **$%^# which has 12.

Sound : 10
The sound is great way surpassed my other guitars it has a buitifull rich sound with plenty of sustain . It suits my neads perfectly ,i play mainly metal on it but have also played alot of slow tunes on it even some classical it can fit them all.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I think this guitar has been well made. The pickups are just about in the right place they dont get in the way even when finger picking although not as good as a telecaster for doing that sort of thing but still able . Nothing on the guitar is loose or fading or nothing and i belive i am the third owner!!!

Reliability/Durability : 10
This is the best part becouse its vertually indistructable ,before me a rather nasty grunge band had it for a while and gave it some stick and ive dropped it loads of times and still no damage its like its possesed or somthing lol!!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never needed.

Overall Rating : 10
Ive been playing for a few years now and everyone seriusly loves it .If you see this guitar enywhere pick it up and play it unless its on stage of course . If it was lost or stolen i would cry i really would couse i love it.

It was made in 1988 I believe. It has 22 frets. A three way selector switch, two tones and a volume. This guitars is awesome!! It has a HSH pick-up configuration with the option to go singlecoil/series in the buckers buy lifting the tone and volume controls! It has a ergonomic design with great sustain. I locked the trem back into the body with 5 Fender springs and the sustain is unbeatable. The neck through design is rare and sweet and awesome. I sanded the paint off of the neck and some paint off of the body, so it can breath more. The frets are jumbo and just cool.

Sound : No Opinion
It has a rich, warm sustained sound. I've played it so much it sounds beautiful. Its broken in. When the series is clicked on you do get a little buzz, but the crisp jazz tone is worth it. It also breaks down the overdrive for more control ala Jimmy Page. I use a '69 JMP 50 through 4X12 greenbacks and I bust a nut everytime I play my rig. As far as variety of tones I haven't played a guiatat that has a bigger range. I have no dislikes.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I had to do lots of adjusting. It came with a Bendmaster II Floyd Rose type bridge and I hated that thing. Now I can use the levers on the trem for effect, but I don't get any play. The quality of wood is pretty high for an electric.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I have dropped this guitar many times and it looks a little weathered, but it is bomb proof.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never a need

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for 14 years and I have played many guitars: Clapton Strats, PRS, '54 Les Paul Gold Top, Gretsch White Falcon, my buddy's sweet Blackie like strat, etc and I haven't played a guiatar that even came close in intuitive design, extras, warm, rich tone, sustain, action, pick-up adjustment options(allen rench pole) The guitar just ROCKS!!! And every other Westone I have played SUCKED! Spectrum FX all the way!!!!!!!!
If this guitar was stolen I would find it. I wouldn't dick around. I would find it.
This is the luckiest find I could imagine, and my mom bought it for me for my 15th birthday for 50% off because it didn't look like a trendy Charvel! And she knows nothing of guitars. It just called to her like Christine.

I bought this guitar from a pawn shop, so I have absolutely no idea about..well...pretty much all the specifics. What I -can- say is that it's got two humbuckers and a single coil, and they sound absolutely lovely. I've been playing guitar for 3 years, so I haven't really owned many others, but from playing a few of my friends', this guitar has an awesome sound. It's really round and warm without getting muddy while playing clean, and sounds great while distorted, too. I suppose you could say it's got a strat-style body, but it's pretty odd. The horns curve in, and remind me of Gibson SG's, but they're staggered like on a strat, if that makes any sense - they also look much cooler ;) It's got a through-the-body neck with a rosewood fingerboard. It has a floating tremolo, but I have had no problems with keeping the guitar in tune. (then again, I don't use the tremolo much.) Since I bought it from a pawn shop, it came with nothing. It has two tone knobs and a volume knob, and a 3 way pickup selector switch. It's got mean looking black hardware. Also, it has a painted neck and headstock, which some people think looks cheap or plasticy, but on this guitar, it really looks dark and gritty - a nice guitar for metal. It also has a tune locking system by the nut, not sure of the technical name for one of those.

Sound : 10
It suits me fine, and I play grunge/alternative/classic rock (sometimes)/blues/folkish-acoustic.. It seems to be an all-around guitar. I use a DOD Grunge IT amp, which I know isn't the best.. I've plugged into Peaveys and Fenders though, and it doesn't change the overall tone much. It's got an excellent sound, which I described before.. I like everything about this guitar, but I am fairly new to the guitar world, and haven't had much experience with other equipment. Other players have told me that it's got a really fun fretboard/neck, and I'd have to agree with them. It's a very veristile guitar, but as far as looks go, it's metal...

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I got it from a pawn shop, and the action was a bit low..but I was able to fix that without any problems at all. Other than that, the guitar was setup fine. I don't know if the previous owners had done anything to it, though.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Everything on the guitar seems to have lasted pretty well.. There's a missmatched tone knob, and the top of the pickup switch is gone (but doesn't make it hard to switch pickups), but I've had it for six months, gigged with it, and had no problems.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven't dealt with the company..

Overall Rating : 10
I've played for 3 years, and I've got a Harmony Strat that I'm rebuilding, and a really awful acoustic. If it were stolen, I'd get HIGHLY emotional, but if I couldn't get it back, I'd probably end up buying something else mostly because I got the guitar because of its price, its features, and I'd want to try out some other brands just for the heck of it.. And, I heard the company stopped making them in '87, and Westones are fairly rare from what I gather. I was considering selling it a while ago, but thought better of it.. However, if the price were right, I may be willing to give it up to experiment with other brands.
