I bought my x-70 from a shop about 3 months ago - it has a natural wood finish, 3 piece laminated body, maple neck and fretboard, single coil neck (awesome pickup!) + humbucker in the bridge, hardtail. I modified this guitar so that I can tap the HB and put the pups in or out of phase. The pups are stock for Westone/Mats guitars with the HB an "unbalanced" type. No MMK markings on them though. Passive electronics, string through body, original tuners that feel/look like vintage grovers.

The neck is fast and a pleasure to play.

Sound : 10
Bright sound, very much like a Tele sound. Works great with skinny/heavy strings. I play this through a Peavey Classic 50 410 or my Marshall hybrid 65 watt. Both sound great, especially on clean or slightly "pedalled" settings.

You can get just about anything out of it through the Marshall and a Zoom G2.1 multipedal.

Been playing for 35 years, and this is one of the best sounding guitars in my herd. Great for amped up blues - nice JIMI tones.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Low action, beautifully set up after a trip to the luthier. No flaws. The finish has dulled after 23 years, that needs some redoing.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Very tough guitar. Stays in tune, and its built to last. I would gid this without a thought, but of course with a backup.

This is a non-issue, as they are gone... However, I will say that the Matsumoku factory was one of the best in the world at the time of its demise (1987). They produced awesome axes for less than the US built stuff cost, at a point in history where the latters' quality was at a nadir.

Overall Rating : 9
Amazing guitar for $200 CDN. The value/cost ratio goes through the roof. If you see one in a pawn shop in good nick, I recommend that you buy it, you won't be disappointed. I have other Westones which also get the nod, but this one is unique and special. Stolen? - I would grab another if I could, and amazingly they (eg, Westones) are fairly common items for sale in Canada. Cheap, excellent quality, and because of those, fun.

I have about a dozen guitars (Gibson LP std, Yamaha SG, Vantage, and others...) - this is one of my favorites.

The best thing about this guitar is the stock neck pickup - beautiful sounds can be had!!

A pretty standard guitar, volume, tone, string thru body, S/H. A push pull pot for coil tap. 3 way toggle. 22 frets. Grover tuners (I think they've been changed).

Sound : 9
This guitar is great for all musical styles. The pickups are great.I use it mostly for light stuff, but it also sounds awesome for metal or punk or whatever. The neck pickup is a bit muddy if you play really hard.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
It was perfectly set up when I got it. although it's probably 4th or 5th hand. I have no idea how it was at the factory. The neck is straight. It has lower action than any other guitar I've played, and there is absolutely NO fret buzz. The pickups were the right height.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar will pretty much stand whatever you put it through, I've played live with it a few times, with out a backup. the strap buttons I think are changed but I'm going to change them with locking ones just because. I've dropped it from 5 feet in the air by accident and it was barely even out of tune. It's solid as a rock.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I don't even think they exist any more.

Overall Rating : 10
ridiculously easy to play, awesome guitar. I would buy another one if I could find one. but this is the only one I've seen anywhere. The only thing missing is tremelo but I think I may change that soon.
If anyone can find this guitar anywhere I would reccomend you to buy it. I'm only 14 and been playing 3 years, but I know a good guitar from a crap one, this is way better than any of those crappy starter packages people get for way less.

I'm guessing it was made in the late 70's like other Westones i have read about. It's lasted well, and says 'Made in Japan'. it's six-string with single/double coil pick-up, and coil tap. It has a natural wood finish, and volume and tone controls. They are the original pick-ups (believe it or not!) It also has slots in the machine heads so no bleeding when changing strings! Yay! It's made of solid Ash on the body with a Maple neck. It is double-cut and has a body style i have never seen before that looks like an SG crossed with a Strat. I have 2 acoustics and 3 electrics, and this has better interchange than any of them, including a classic Gibson.

Sound : 10
I'm using it with a Marshall MG15r, a Zoom 505II and Horizon leads. It's very clear sounding and versatile, and great to play. I think it sounds best for Indie/Light rock, but can do other styles too. Whilst it has a very clear sound for clean, (and i think this is where it specialises) It sounds good for palm-muting when using distortion. It's great for an all-rounder.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
While the action and interchange are amazing, age may have taken it's toll. It's still better than most guitars I've played today, but it may have been even better in it's day. It didn't look like the previous owner took too much care of it either since the fretboard looked like it hadn't been cleaned since he bought it, and he sold it at a boot-sale for #33! It's so hard to say how well it was set up at the factory due to it's age , so this is difficult to rate but it's clearly quite durable given how well it plays after it's 30 years old.

Reliability/Durability : 9
It's certainly the most durable guitar i have and it's definitely survived a lot of bad treatment. I don't know how many other guitars would cope with 30 years of neglect! I may not choose to risk it given how rare it is, but i reckon it could cope with live playing. The strap buttons are the only part that i even suspect to have been changed. and it is reliable enough to do a gig without a backup, I've had no problems with it so far.

Ha! This is the only one i'm gonna have to give a bad rating to. I've never even found a phone number for the company, they may have disbanded. After numerate internet searches the closest i found was a Westone bass. If it did have a warranty, it must've run out in about '75! there can't be too many of these things around. To be fair though, i'm gonna give the company something for making such a good quality guitar so they must've had some credibility. It's hard for me to judge, but i'm not going to be too vindictive.

Overall Rating : 10
I started Acoustic playing about five years ago and electric about two. Among my inventory are a Yamaha acoustic, A Squier Tele, a Dean Baby Ml, a classic Gibson and now, the Westone. I must admit i took a bit of a risk buying it from a boot sale, I'm glad i did, the way it turned out! If it were stolen or lost, i couldn't get another because it's too rare but i'd definitely want one as oppose to something new. I like the way it plays best. They just don't make guitars like this anymore. I'd be happy to hear from anyone who knows anything or has anything remotely like mine! Thanx!
