I love the Akai sound. And i also love the EMU ultra sound too.

With a floppy disk in the drive I start it up with 2.0 instead of 1.3 that is the hardware version of my S3000XL.
It sound solid and clear.
The manual is ok

with 32 voices of polyphoni its ok for the most situations.
32 Mb (that is max) is maby to small, but it works ok too.
A good thing with S3000XL is that its a sequensplayer (SMF-files). GREAT!!! Wonderful!
But its harder to mount an internal harddisk

Its a great sampler, no doubt. But I prefere the Software samplers, at least for recording, for its so easy with native instruments (I dont meen NI)
The built in sequenserplayer (SMF) is GREAT! I miss that on other synths/racksynths.

Once you get the multi-program-sample relationship down, it's easy. I used to use an S2000 and this is a lot easier to use. It's virtually identical to the S3000XL so you may get the picture.

This has the standard S3000XL features and expandability but it's major gain is an internal SCSI CD-rom drive. Unlike the CD3000(i) it has stereo audio inputs, so the CD-rom is a luxury, not a replacement for your own sounds. You can sample from audio CDs eith it, and it pauses the CD when you stop sampling. How cool is that?

It's the Akai sound and it's good enough for me! The effects are good and the envelope and synth capabilities are excellent.

I had to replace the screen, so I suppose it's a good idea to keep turning it off! The Mesa software crashes all the time, but unlike the S2000, you don't really need it.

I've never dealt with Akai cos I always get samplers second hand.

This is agreat sampler as you may have guessed. If you max it out, you'll only need a new sampler if you need more polyphony. Unless you make music alone, you NEED a hardware sampler, and you need one as good as this. For their secondhand price they're amazing value.
