once you get up and running, its pretty straight forward. Although Ive never gotten used to step muting. You have to go into single step mode (which only plays the current step, over and over agiain) and hit start/stop to toggle on/off. The data knob allows you to choose which step you want to mute. This is pretty annoying to me.
Manuel isnt to bad, although he keeps stealing from me.

sometimes less is more. 3 tracks of 16 steps, enough for me!
midi + cv is great. Although having some kind of clock out would be killer. Im going to try to modify mine to provide this.
having each track have its own tempo would be cool. Tempo dividers are not enough!!!!!!!!!!1oneoneone

Although the menu structure seems a bit complicated, it gets easier with use. The manual is purely functional with out any hints or examples, so some knowledge of what your trying to do helps.

Three banks of 16 knobs that can send either midi notes or CC's. Each bank can drive a different midi channel (or the same one, so bank 1 could be note, 2 filter cutoff, 3 decay time). Very nice. Sequences also can run forward, back or random and sequence length is anything from 1 note to 16. You can also transpose sequences from a midi keyboard or another bank, great stuff.
There are some features that it's missing, gate time adjustment would be nice.

No sounds but it suits many different music types.

I've used my MAQ 16/3's live with no problems. Well built for their price point as well.
The rotary encoder on my black faced unit is not as smooth as the new model but still fine.

I get all my support from the UK distributor, EMIS, who are excellent. they even provide an upgrade for the old version to a new version which consists of 60% new ciruit boards. Doepfer also provide good responses through the user group.

I liked my old black faced unit so much I bourght a second one. If you are into sequencer music it is a great, hands on piece of kit. A lot of fun and the newer models support midi and CV so works fine with new and old gear.

to the previous reviewer.. is there any chance that your emails to doepfer contained a virus? i think so! be more alert w what you are sending and you shouldn't have these problems again. contrary to your statement about doepfers customer service being crap, most users, including my self, find doepfer to have an excellent, pro-active relationship w its user base.

Version 2.0. I have tried contacting Deopfer to upgrade to the lastest version but they dont email me back. Version 2.0 has a number of real problems. First is the rotary knob. Just a pot and this makes it diffuclt to select patches. Imagine you have a scratchy pot on your amp. Well here the scratchy pot makes patch selection impossible. Very bad design!

At first glace looks good but its such a bitch to program. Much better using fruity loops for sequencing. Will never buy another doepfer project again.

Its a hardware analogue sequencer. So sounds are not applicable. But just to say even though with all its hands on controls software sequencers can do so much more without the midi limitations.
