I have Os version 1.01. and use this machine for electro.
Preset sounds : "natural instruments" sounds and presets are good, Some electro sounds are good too. But i noticed that the kits are using too much of the same sounds and are not really well organizd.
The procussion is a synth : if your not into programming machines to get you're own sounds than you might not buy it.
Editing sounds : rather irritating with the small screen, but HERE IS THE TRICKS : go onto sounddiver page (sounddiver is a software you can use to edit your procussion or other synth sounds )"http://www.emagic.de/support/download/sounddiverW.php?lang=EN" then download sounddiver 2.1.2 cd installer. It might sound amazing but this si a fully working version of SD (they might have done a mistake and put it onto their website). Now you can edit your procussion sound onto your 17" computer screen instead ot the 2*16 letters screen!!

As i said, natural instruments are good but i'm not into it that much.
You can programm very good electro sounds if you take some times on it. To get decent sounds, you have to use the separated stereo out and, for ex, root bassdrums, snaredrums and hi hat to different canal of your mixer. if you do not do this, your sound will be shitty. After doing good routing and appropriate equalization, appropriate programming, you get very round bassdrum, amazing punchy snares (oh my good lord, these snares break everything!).
Of course, if you have a electronic battery, you can connect your procussion to it and come into another world....

This is a master piece of my studio for drum tracks. this is from 91 and it still sound so actual. it's also cheap, now. I repeat it : this is a synth : i never use twice the same sound on different tracks. You can so precisely shape each sound. one sound (they call it stack) can be made of 4 waveforms. each waveform can be manipulated (envelope, decay, tune, erverse...) and each stack can then be manipulated again. If, like me, you can't use sound from the others and need your own, these try to find one of these

It sucks!!!
After years of using, the IC of the machine seems to be suffered from aging. Since last year, I need to use many hours to "warm it up" before it can work and display correctly. Now the situation becomes worse since I couldn't "warm it up" overnight.
I think it is dying with just 10 years old.

This drum module definately does the trick for very little money. I think it is one of the finer used drum modules out there and very much under-rated in my opinion. Emu Drum sounds are some of the best!! I love all the ethnic/tribal type drums in there too. I would surely buy it again for the mere $200 I paid.

It's 32 voice poly and 16-part multi. This may sound exciting to you if you were like me hoping to have lots of kicks on channel 1, lotsa snares on channel 2 etc...all 16 MIDI channels filled up with access to about 768 sounds. But...

And, here comes the "but!" The sounds are absolutely terrible. The low end is mushy, the mid-range is over pronounced and the hi-end is sharp with aliasing artifacts heardable. I really dislike the sounds that this unit makes. If you wanna do mid-90's 'Prince' music, get this box, cause that's what he used. Get yourself a sampler and load it up with drum sounds instead.

If it were lost, I'd phone up my insurance company and told them it was stolen. If it was stolen I'd do the same thing.
I've owned a lot of drum modules...Procussion, Roland R8m, Yamaha RM50, Alesis D4 and Kawai XD-5. From all of them, I liked the XD-5 the best as it offered a great selection of sounds and versatile sound programming.

I have version 1.01 from 1991- I don't know if they went much past that. Has the famous EMU one line interface, I can get around on it well enough, but I use Sound Diver which makes it a moot point. Manual is decent enough, I don't refer to it too often.

32 voice polyphony, perfectly adequate for drums and percussion. While it has no built-in effects, many of the samples have a little ambience included, so it sounds very good dry. The acoustic drum sounds are very good, cuts well ina mix. Even better, with six separate outs, you can seperate kick, snare, cymbals, etc and EQ and effect them individually thru your mixer. being able to construct your own drum kits from the 500+ samples in ROM is very nice. Panning of the entire kit is sometimes skittish to MIDI control.

Acoustic sounds are very good- it would be great if the cymbals had more sustain, but you can use reverb outboard to help with that. I don't use the -909 etc. sample too ofetn, so i can't comment. Lots of different samples (50 snares, 50 kicks, etc.) so you can make a decently expressive drum kit.

No problems except for the occasional weird MIDI panning- no problem when I disabled panning in the unit and controlled it from my mixer instead.

It works, and it works well. You can pick one up for a nice bargain these days. The multiple outs are really great- allows you to really work on the drums in the mix and process things individually. I haven't heard the newer Alesis unit to compare, but back when I thought it was better than their DP4(?). If I wanted to get really crazy about the drum sounds, i would get a dedicated sampler and buy a drum CD, but the Procussion is very cost effective in comparison.

I'm running a Procussion with revision 1.01 Probably all came like that. Presets are okay to very good, depending on what you're after. If you want to edit the sounds on this box, an editor is a must, as the interface leaves much to be desired. The manual, while decently laid out, doesnt really help in figuring out certain functions.

Not quite sure about polyphony, probably 32, most of these era boxes did that. As far as I know, there are no expansion possibilites, there are 64 built in patterns and 64 user slots but apart from that any storage would need to be done through a MIDI dump. The Procussion has no effects as far as I can tell, but I think this was intentional. It has three sets of outputs so I imagine they intended you to use an external effects box. There is no real on board sequencer at all. It responds to program change, volume all that good stuff but for some reason acts funny sometimes with Pan.

I mess around with a vareity of project ranging from ethnic to heavy electronic stuff. I'd say the Procussion would work well in a rock to semi-ethnic setting, it has a nice vareity of rock-style drums. Some of the others are kinda cheesy and dated, like most of the electronic emulations, trying to sound like a 909 and stuff and it ends up just cheesy. Guess it would have been the box back in 1991 though. Like I said before, no effects as far as I can tell, if there are any they must really suck not for me to notice them.

I would gig with it, but I wouldnt put in in a situation where it was doing something vital. It's just been too fishy.

When I bought mine used, it didnt come with a manual, and Emu were of course nice enough to sell me a manual for $20. I havent had the best experiences with Emu's support, but they can be helpful occasionally.

I suppose I would get another if it broke or got stolen. I really only use it for snares and ethnic sounds, so it's kind of a niche piece for me. I thought about getting some Alesis products for a while, but I've heard bad things about their newer boxes like the DM5. The interface could be much better, but then again what do you expect for a 1U rackmount? Overall, I'd say it's useful as a secondary unit. I bought it as a supplement for my other drum machine, a quasimidi QM 309.

What can't you do with this thing ?? OK I'm sure someone could come up with a few things, but as far a Drum Module goes..this thing makes my D4 look unflexable..I love the fact that not only does it have an almost endless amount of sounds.... you can still tweak them into anything you want!

I haven't decided yet if it sounds quiite as realistic as the D4...I do after all I use that box daily...but Im totally impressed with this thing..it does a great 909 simulation and some of sounds I've never heard anywhere else !
