The MTPAV has 4 knobs: "select" "cursor" "window" and "value". I could never figure out how to use this (after 2 years of trying!) and had to consult the manual often. All of these knobs mean the same thing to me. Isn't a cursor used to select what you want on the screen? Isn't select used to select what you want on the screen? If you hit window good luck. That takes you down the never-ending path of hidden menus. These 4 knobs pull out for use. The trouble is, when you apply pressure to turn them you can't help but push them in making them unsuasable if you have your unit rack mounted and have big fingers like me! Editing patches is a joke. The manual must have been translated 3 or 4 times before the English version came out.

Features galore if you can find them in the hidden windows. Any attempt to change settings is guaranteed to eliminate any previous creativity you may have had. I sit down to record, not try to figure out some obscene learning curve. If I ever needed to actually change a setting on this thing my creativity turned into frustration and the moment was ruined.

I could rely on this unit to consistantly frustrate me. I give it a 10 for this reliability.

It took some time but MOTU was actually friendly. I had a driver problem as this ubnit was really designed for thew MAC platform, not windows. They helped get me through that painful and lengthy process. Another hit record idea down the drain!

If lost or stloen I would celibrate. I have been playing for 30 years. I have 3 large racks of gear and this was by far the most difficult item I ever tried to use.

it's not that easy to use, you'll have to study the user manual and spend a good weekend away from everybody to master this piece

Customer service are not professionals, not helpful, and careless, some of them have attitude, especially if you have and accent , don't bother to call them .. my order for the upgrade chips still in process for more than a month .. got the package missing the USB chip (which is the one i need) never knew why and technical support was rude about it, each time i call (with my accent) i get an answer like i'm going to ship it right away, the last one was i'm going to ship it right now it's in my hands .. it's still didn't come to my address untill this day, called a supervisor and right away he was giving me and attitude, even though they were wrong ..
i hated dealing with customer service, and i decidedto sell this unit and get rid of it.. anybody want to buy , drop me and email.

i'll never buy any MOTU product again for the simple reason (worthless cutomer service) especially if you are a second hand customer or have an accent... i regret buying it and i'll never ever buy it again..

This is a piece of hardware that is very easy to use, thanks to the pc-software. It is able to do anything you could possibly want to do with midi-routing. IMHO it is the definite midi-interface. Routing and filtering is versatile and simple.

The MOTU Timepeace AV has 8 midi-in and 8 midi-out ports that are freely routable. Timecode (MTC) can be taken from any input and the machine is able to sync to smpte code and video blackburst (genlock). It is the essential link between professional video gear and sound production.

A useful peace of gear. But only needed for very complex midi setups and professional video-postproduction setups. The only thing i hate about this machine is the fact that there is only one midi in/out port available at the front panel. This means that it is hard to use in a dynamic midi-setup.

There are units out there that has lasted for more then 6 years without a problem !!!
Metal casing and great quality.
Finally in year 2003 this unit gets a updated driver and software that works great !

The current new MIDI patchbays have gotten so cheap compared to this master piece.
I am glad I have this monster patch bay.
But for $595 list price it should be a monster patch bay.
Anyone with multiple MIDI gear or wants to perform live with multiple MIDI gear should consider the MTP AV for performances.
MOTU is definitely a pro gear.
I am gonna probably get rid of the two other MIDI patch bays I have.
