Super easy machine. Two oscillators, a filter, some simple modulation, and there you have it.

It's pretty limited. I wouldn't mind more waveforms, maybe an arpeggiator. It's monophonic.

Great Moog bass. The Square wave is especially fat. For the fattest bass, I recommend dual sawtooth in unison that are slightly tuned apart. FAT. Contour syncing provides amazing expressiveness.

It gets out of tune, it's old, lot's of crackling.

This is a very basic synth concept. Not hard at all in theese vst days, all functions is accessible from the front.

Mono, no effects and only cv/gate but thats what makes this baby so cool and creative, youre forced to experiment and tweak the knobs to your satisfaction...

I do psytrance and ambient and the sound of the rogue is perfect for both. When i make psy i sample it for basses and weird synth effects (it can even do bass drums) and when doing ambient i play it live, tweaking it very softly.... great great clean and wonderful sounds only a real analogue can produce...
I have a virus which i love but this just have so much more character and soul...

I have had it for 13 years and i picked it up very cheap from a hustler that didnt know what he was selling... at all... He said it didnt work at all but after changing one of the powersupplies (7809 i think)it came to live... The autotrig switch was broken but still in function and the vca section didnt respond at all and it was totally out of tune.
I actually lived with the defects and still loved it until just the other day when i finally decided to trace the error(s) and fix them. After poking around with my multimeter i manged to analyse that the 3046 ic in the oscillator was defect and replaced it. The vca was suffering from a defect 4007 ic and after replacing that and the defect autotrig switch i tuned it according to the service manual and it works perfect now :D
If you have to replace the 3046 be sure to grease the resistors in the bottom and on top of it with heat compound as theese resistors stabilises the vco's from room temperature ;)

If it were lost it would be hard to live without but i would proabably not be able to find a new one. Maybe i could build one as it is very simple and basic and building it would be cheaper than buing a used one.

very simple design. not a whole lot you can do with it. fat bass, or crunchy leads... that's about it. it can't do much, but what it does do it does well.
nice and small, everything you need, nothing you don't. i give it a 9 only because it doesn't have patch memory, so a lot of time is spent between songs getting all the knobs and sliders set.
Features
:
3
it's mono... but who cares when you're playing bass lines? i use mine with an opus-3 and they're the perfect match. again, not a whole lot of features... you can pick between 3 octaves, two oscillators either sync'd or not. that's about it.

i get complements at every show on how fat my bass tones are. i'm constantly asked what i use to get such rich warm deep tones, and they're always surprised when i point to my little rogue. in the band that i'm in now that's all i use it for. it can do crunchy growls and soft round swells. for bass their's no other synth i would choose (other than another moog). my juno-60 doesn't even come close in the bass department.
Reliability

okay, this is it's downfall. the 2nd oscillator on mine is pretty damn unstable. if i leave it in the practice space long enough (a few weeks) it eventually settles down. but when i take out for shows it's near impossible to keep it in tune. the 1st oscillator doesn't give me any problems. but it's always a gamble when i try to sync the two up... unfortunately that's when the rogue sounds it's best.
i've callibrated them via the back panel, but it makes no difference... cause i can tune it, but it waves in and out almost immediately after. again, if i were to just use it for studio it would be a great little bass synth. but i want to tour with it... so i'm currently looking to replace it with a more stable prodigy.
i should also add, i know nothing about electronics... so it's possible it could be fixed, i just don't know how to do it.

none. i live in seattle, and i have the hardest time getting anyone to fix it. i've called every vintage keyboard repair guy in the city and no one wants to even look at it. i know there are moog repair people in the country, but it's not worth the price of shipping it, waiting for it to be fixed, taking the risk of it being damaged during shipping, not to mention theirs no guarantee it can be fixed.

if it were lost or stolen, i'd be bummed, but sort of relieved cause it meant i'd be forced to go buy a more stable synth. i bought it on ebay and i've owned it for about a year now. i use it every week in my electro-pop band and it sounds amazing. but as good as it sounds, it's not always worth the embarrassment of having it go out of tune, or not to being able to tune it at all!
i also own two opus-3's, and a juno-60. i owned a minimoog at one point but sold it since it was even more unstable than the rogue. i rate it a five cause it sounds great, but it's a huge head ache, and as soon as i find a more stable synth for bass i'll be selling it.

Found this synth at a goodwill. No power supply and molten foam on the inside. Another problem was that the power in connector was broken from the circuit board..... anyhow i fixed it up and I found a power supply that works at the local radio shack. The power supply is 24 volt AC. The radio shack part is Catalog #: 273-1690. you might need an adapter to extend the plug to fit in the back of the synth.

This little analog synth is fairly well thought out given its mission of affordability. With any non-modular there is a compromise between predetermined modulation/signal routing and cost, size and complexity. The Rogue is an interesting study in this. Fairly clever design. I picked this up as an expansion unit for an MS-20 and a sequencer. However, who can resist just plugging it in and futzing with it. Sheer simplicity really (Granted, I have considerable experience with analogs). I would expect a newbie to probably have it figured out in a couple of days and nights. Having said that, there is enough complexity to make it fun for a while (versus total presets). By fun I mean forgetting a particular patch and trying to get back a sound from last week.
Features
:

Keyboard action is typical "computer keyboard", zero feedback (anyone surprised?).
Built in effects I suppose would mean things like noise-source and Sample-and Hold. Yes to both.
The expansion capabilities are why I got it (easy MIDI fans, I'm talking 1/4" plugs and jacks here). CV and S-trigger capabilities make it basically an expansion module with a keyboard.

Surprisingly good for as simple as it is. I used to have a MicroMoog and the Rogue out performs it (sound wise) just by virtue of the second VCO (tune to 5th etc.). The waveforms are limited (ramp, square, pulse on one VCO). Therefore the sounds are somewhat limited. However, the ol 24 db filter makes up for quite alot. It sounds like one would expect an analog synth to sound like. It just doesn't go much above and beyond that (my Mini would). This synth is good for making sounds that are not trying to imitate natural instruments (or other synths). One can get some very nice sounds given a bit of experimentation.
Reliability
:

Kinda like a single engine airplane. Less stuff to wrong but, Gawd help you if it does. Fairly reliable. The VCO's need tweeking (back panel access) now and then (welcome to the Dark Side). Take it on the road and leave the good stuff at home.

Simple eneough to have a technician buddy at it or try yourself if your brave. Otherwise, I don't think the Moog folks work on these.

Overall its a nice little synth. The next things comparible to it are probably something like an Arp Odyssey MKII or MultiMoog (CV, Trig, etc., many Prodigy's don't have expansion capabilities), however the Arp is superior by a quite a margin. You will have to get your money gun out for the Arp and start shoot'n though. At this point I would try to replace it. When friends come over I let them play with the Rogue. The big grin is worth it. The MS-20 is way too much machine for that (patchcords can do that). For gigs its a good little hammer. If it walks or someone pukes on it you don't go non-linear.

You can't get a easier thing to play with.
Being a basic oscillation device the deliver is as good as it gets. Fat, punchy...analog heaven. Manual matches simplicity.

Monophonic but you can add some detuning harmony to it.
Now this is an analog piece and as such is megaflexible.

This is an excellent addition to your production studio. If you are into fat bass sounds uh man this is THE real thing.
for leads and trebly tones, well it is a Moog and a Moog sound is usually what you get but if you put some work and real time dynamics to it you can get just awesome stuf from it, add a little post production and there is no limit.

Very easy to use, about the simplest configuration possible. Like the Yamaha CS-01 and some other mini synths, there's no separation between the filter and amp envelopes, both are controlled by the same sliders-this is the main compromise here, but it still sounds great.

Basic, very easy to use standard analog config. Conveniently, CV and Gate jacks already there, so very easy to midi..

Irregardless of the rhetoric, it's comparable to a Prodigy or Source in providing hi-quality, classic Moog sounds at a cheap price and in a small package. Thus, a bargain, if you want superlative bass and leads..I say this having A-B'd it against all of my other Moogs, it's excellent..Only drawback is that the filter and amp envelopes are controlled simultaneously from the same slides, a little limiting. However, bottom line is that it's very easy to get superior sounds that blow away the newer equipment. Same raw, ballsy Moog sound..

Like any synth, there is a learning curve for this machine. However, the learning curve for this particular machine is quite a bit quicker and simpler than many analog synths. This is my first synth, and it took me two weeks of infrequent use to really start to find killer sounds.
Features
:

While this synth isn't as versatile as many others (minimoog, etc.), it is capable of producing a variety of sounds, from great bass sounds to very nice leads. On the other hand, it isn't as if you are getting the variety of sounds that you would with a digital synth or a more advanced analoge one

The sounds that you can create with some work are amazing! What really sells this is the bass. It is amazing for several styles, but primarily for experimental type rock a la radiohead and sigur ros. And it fits this genre perfectly. In fact, Jonny Greenwood owns a rogue, and you can see him putting it to use in the film "meeting people is easy".

Ahh The Rogue.... Talk about easy. This is as simple as it gets.. Twist, slide, press and instantly sweet sweet bleep bloop love. However, unless you have a pen and paper, or a photographic memory sometimes it's hard to get the same exact sound twice.

This baby is totally monophonic, and it defaults to the lower key pressed when you play two keys at the same time. 2 VCO'c 1 LFO Moog's legendary filter.... pitch wheel Mod wheel.. Assignable ASR for either filter or VCO... pretty basic. No midi, but retrofits are available online for around $100. Otherwise it's Voltage Control only... Rmember thats 1 volt = 1 octave

The rogue is pretty dang flexible... Loud LO Freq Bass or Screaming high leads.. Good sci-fi sounds and fx... True you won't sound like Kieth Emerson with this alone, but it sounds pretty freakin rad anyway. My pots sliders and all are clean... if you clean em once every so often they stay pretty crackle free.. If you don't take care of your moog it won't take care of you ;)

My Rogue has never let me down... When I bought the power regulator was fried inside... it took with it the output circuit (on the same pcb). once that was fixed I found the oscillators badly out of callibration. Since the trouble when I bought it from a dishonest Ebay-er It has served me well on the road and in the studio.
