Die Preset-Sounds sind gut bis sehr gut. Herausragend sind die Saxophone, einzelne Orgeln sowie auch die E-Pianos. Weniger gut sind Klarinette, Oboe, E-Orgeln.
Die Sounds sind sehr leicht zu modifizieren, jedoch nur mit Vibrato, Release, Cutoff, Resonance.
Das Original-Manual ist unvollstandig und kompliziert. Es gibt jedoch von Roland ein spater erschienenes User-Manual, da? alle wichtigen Features sehr gut beschreibt.

31-fache Polyphonie, etwas zu leichte Tastengewichtung, leider kein Aftertouch!!! Die Standard GM-Effekte Hall, Chorus und Delay sind vorhanden, leicht zu nutzen, der Chorus konnte besser sein, der Hall ist sehr gut fur die damalige Zeit.
Erweiterungen im Hinblick auf den Sound sind nicht moglich. Es gibt jedoch die Moglichkeit, alle Daten, Userprogramme, MIDI-Files auf Diskette abzuspeichern.
Die On-Board Sequenzer arbeiten nur 2 spurig und in Echtzeit. Es gibt jedoch die Moglichkeit, Styles umfassend selbst zu programmieren. Diese Programmierung ist aber sehr aufwendig.
Bis auf den fehlenden Aftertouch und eine fehlendes Modulationsrad ist eine umfassende MIDI-Ausstauung vorhanden. Hervorragend ist auch der kombinierte Pitch-Modulationshebel fur die realistische Spielweise vieler Blas- und Streichinstrumente einsetzbar.

Sehr gut sind Saxophone, Flote, Violine, Piano, E-Piano, Organ3, PipeOrgan, Akustische Gitarren.
Hervorragend sind die Sounds fur Rock/Pop einsetzbar. Fur Techno/Dance und klassische Musik eher weniger.
Die onboard Effekte sind gut.
Die Effekte sind nicht dynamisch steuerbar, bzw. nur uber MIDI.
Die Sounds reagieren teils hervorragend auf die Velocity dank Switch-Samples, z. B. bei den Saxophonen und Gitarren. Aftertouch existiert leider nicht.

Das Diskettenlaufwerk hat haufiger Probleme, MIDI-Files zu lesen, die mit dem Computer aufgespielt wurden, dies ware im LIVE-Einsatz eine Katastrophe! Sonst sind fast nie Absturze aufgetreten.

Ich wurde mir den Nachfolger den VA 76 holen, da in diesem immer noch die Sounds des E 86 vorhanden sind.
Ich spiele ihn bereits seit seinem Ersterscheinen und bin immer noch ziemlich zufrieden. Ich liebe die Saxophone sowie die Beat-Styles, die einfach universell und gut einsetzbar sind.
Im Vergleich zu den vergleichbaren Keyboards von Yamaha, Kawai und Technics klingt der Roland mit Abstand am realistischsten, insbesondere die Gitarren und Blaser sind bis heute unerreicht. Er war seiner Zeit weit voraus, auch im Hinblick auf Live-Spiel. Ich vermisste immer die Aftertouch-Funktion sowie Drehregler statt +-Tasten zum Steuern der Cutoff und Resonance. Zusatzlich hatte ich mir eine Erweiterbarkeit der Sounds gewunscht sowie eine integrierte Zugriegelorgel.
Das Diskettenlaufwerk argerte mich jedoch sehr haufig.

Now in 2003 price is 800-600 german marks.

If you love to programing synth you can create lovely analog sounds.

Ideal for ROCK and POP.It has a TR-808 DRUMS,AND other drum sets.
Portamento effect is good to.Editing patces is easy because you can
edit only filter cut of and envelopes.Wuritzer and other el.pianos are
superior.Accoustic guitar is mega warmth.Some hammonds are hot .
Synth strings is cool.Brass,harmonica(Yamaha dx)and sax are ultra good.

No arpeggiator and you cant edit things when you record on sequencer.
NO loads songs like on korgs .Roland have direct disk play.

Manual is horrible,
Editing can be a bit hard, no logic,

But it's pretty good as is, so there is no big need to piddle around much.

Don't like the keys.
Effects are quite easy to edit and sound wonderful.

Most sounds are great, some are not (clarinet- sounds way better on my DX7) Drums are a bit thin.

Roland can be a bit tough to deal with.

I would probably go for something else -it's not outstanding.

Some parts, like creating user styles are a little complicated, but many others are, in my opinion, very easy to use

This is practically a synth for the rest of us. Do not get if you have a problem with numerous buttons.! Action is very nice, for a non-weighted keyboard. Core Instruments are basically the same as a Sound Canvas, but several sounds in other banks are exceptional. Examples: A42[4]Steel-StrGt2 -- A very nice "Unplugged" acoustic guitar sound. A81[1]Trumpet2 -- A nice overall Trumpet. From Fanfares to Marches to Jazz, this one is good. A37[1]Harmonica2 -- A DX sounding harmonica, perfect for a bluesy piece

VERY reliable! Disk drive has trouble reading some MIDI files, but that's about it.

Roland is a VERY good company. High quality instruments with Excellent Sounds, and VERY reliable! If you can find one used, GET IT!
